“It is a crazy idea. There is not enough space on the footpaths as it is.”

“I’m 50/50 about it. I think it is a good idea as it won’t slow some people down. However, it may encourage people to walk and text or do it when driving, which is not a good idea.”

“No. Teenagers can already text and walk without banging into people. Who is paying for it?”

“It seems like a lot of an effort and I don’t think people would abide by it. They’ll just walk and text where they like.”

“It could be a good idea but it seems it may be more work than it is worth, and could encourage people to continue antisocial behaviour such as more texting.”

“It was a good April fool joke, but not really needed.”

QEII stand falling down Continued from page 1 “It has been falling down for months. They [the stands] are just falling down. They are all fenced off and we’re keeping people out, but some parts have fallen down. It’s quite dramatic.” When Mainland Press visited the QEII site last week, you could see where three rows of seats had fallen from the stand, with another row looking like it was close to breaking apart as well. Mr Filsell said the stadium had not started breaking as a result of the ongoing aftershocks, and he was concerned for workers’ safety in the area should more parts of the stadium randomly fall apart. “The effect of the February and June earthquakes has made the land and ground underneath the stadium very unstable. There’s so much movement in the ground that it’s causing the support pillars to move. “It’s not the ongoing quakes. The damage has been done. It’s stuffed. It will be demolished,” he said. More testing of the land at QEII using explosives to simulate a large earthquake would take place on April 16. “It [the testing] doesn’t affect the integrity of

Ruth

the stadium,” Mr Filsell said. “The land damage has been done. The stadium was falling down long before the tests started and the effects of the tests on the QEII buildings are negligible.”

New hub for displaced tech businesses THE government’s announcement last week to invest $1.8 million over the next three years to develop an information and communication technology hub in Christchurch will give a huge boost for the wider Christchurch community, the Canterbury Business Recovery Trust says. The trust is lending its support to the Enterprise Precinct and Innovation Campus (EPIC), which will be built on the corner of Tuam and Manchester streets and become home to 17 hi-tech businesses displaced after the Canterbury earthquakes. The Christchurch City Council has committed the site to EPIC businesses rentfree for five years. Canterbury Business Recovery Trust

executive director Louise Edwards said the trust was excited to be part of the project. “Along with providing a home for these businesses, the EPIC development will also firmly put Christchurch on the hi-tech map, which will provide huge economic benefits and opportunities. “EPIC will also provide a huge psychological boost for Christchurch business people and the wider Christchurch community. Seeing a project of this scale get off the ground, and seeing building get underway, is such a positive step forward in the rebuilding of our city,” she said. EPIC is expected to be up and running by August.

Student loan changes ‘sting’ ex-pats Tania Butterfield

CHANGES to the student loan repayment holiday scheme for Kiwis living overseas could have a significant impact on those wanting to stay overseas for more than a year, a Christchurch ex-pat says. The government announced last week that students going overseas will have to start repaying their student loan after one year abroad. In the past, students had up to three years leeway before they had to start repayments on their loans. Christchurch ex-pat Kim Shears, who has lived in London since 2008, said the changes introduced through the Student Loan Amendment Bill could influence Kiwis’ decision to do their OE after graduation. “The whole reason to do your OE is to travel, and if you have to start paying off your student loan halfway through, there may be little point for them to do [their OE],” she said. However, most Kiwis in the United Kingdom generally stayed about two years so starting repayments after a year might not be too much of a burden, Ms Shears said. Those who would really feel the pinch in the legislation change were people who intended

on staying overseas longer. “Those of us who are in it for the long haul will be stung pretty bad. It’s hard to find your feet in a different country and work your way up the ladder to get to a position that you may have been at home. It took me about three years. “Having a shorter period to start worrying about the debt at home will be pretty difficult for some,” Ms Shears said. The government’s decision to require a contact number for a New Zealand relative made sense. “I don’t know why they haven’t done it before now,” she said. The new provisions came into effect on April 1.

A TEAM of keen Christchurch cyclists, all aged over 70, are aiming to put younger riders to the test when they take part in the Tour of New Zealand from Bluff to Wellington, starting on Saturday. The team, comprised of Eric Hunter, John Brownie, Eddie Corrigan, Russell Ward, Charles Barltrop, Bryan Mullaly and Austin Prattley, will compete under the name ‘Shake, Rattle and Ride,’ a reference to the city’s shaky year. The tour, which is in its inaugural year, will see South Island teams starting from Bluff and North Island teams leaving from Cape Reinga on Saturday, with both groups cycling

around 1000km over eight days to meet up in Wellington. There, North and South Island teams will face off with a race around the Beehive. The group had originally hoped to ride against an over 70s team from the North Island but organisers were not able to assemble one. They will now face a celebrity team featuring mayor of Wellington Celia Wade-Brown and cabinet minister David Carter, with the rest yet to be confirmed. Mr Hunter said the men, who are members of local cycling group The Magpies, were strong riders and believed they could finish ahead of many younger competitors.

“Most of us have been competitive for a number of years and have won between us a large number of events,” he said. At 78, Mr Hunter will be the oldest in the team, while Mr Brownie is the youngest at 71. Race director Peter Yarral said he was in awe of the team. “It’s a real message to New Zealand that just because you’re 70, you don’t just have to sit in an older person’s home, you can get out there and enjoy life like you’re a 20-yearold.” It was likely that around 500 competitors would take part in the tour.

ECan targets companies for illegal dumping Tom Doudney

ENVIRONMENT Canterbury (ECan) has its sights set on at least two companies suspected of illegally dumping earthquake material and plans to come down hard on them. ECan regional manager of Resource Management Act monitoring and compliance Brett Aldridge said the authority wanted to send a message that illegal dumping was not acceptable. “We’ve got some more investigations on our books as we speak that we think are quite serious and when we catch someone and can prove they’ve been legally dumping we’re going to take quite a hard stand against them.” ECan was in the early stages of investigating two companies suspected of serious breaches. The issue of illegal dumping first surfaced in the middle of last year and Mr Aldridge said it was difficult to say whether the problem had gotten better or worse since then. “It’s an issue that will be ongoing while there are increased amounts of waste coming out of the city. I don’t know how long that will take but I’m anticipating we’re talking 12 months or more before we start to see a

drop back to normal volumes.” The dumping was taking place on the city’s boundary and out into the countryside. Potential consequences included the contamination of ground and surface water, as well as the creation of pockets of contaminated land, which would be restricted in the types of land use they could accommodate, and costly to remediate. “Once you start putting contaminated waste into the ground these are legacy issues. You could essentially see effects for years and years to come.” He appealed to the public for vigilance. “If anyone sees anything that just looks suspicious, just a truck going somewhere where they don’t think there are any disposal facilities, we’d really love to hear from them.” ECan was working closely with the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority on the issue, including through assistance in the auditing of waste management plans associated with demolitions. Anyone found guilty of illegal dumping could face up to two years in prison or a fine of up to $300,000 for an individual or $600,000 for a company.

Boult says airline’s departure unlikely to raise prices Tom Doudney THE withdrawal of Air Asia X from the Christchurch market shouldn’t cause a plane ticket price hike, according to Christchurch International Airport chief executive Jim Boult. The airline’s service will be suspended from the end of May as part of its recent move to cut back on longer-haul flights. Mr Boult said it was unlikely competitors would raise prices in response. “It remains a very competitive market,” he said. “There are plenty of ways to get everywhere in the world, so no, I don’t think it will have any effect on pricing.” However, Wellington-based aviation industry contractor and analyst Gordon Bevan was less confident. “I think what the airlines will be hoping is that there will be a period where they can stand back and say what happens now that the area direct (Air Asia X) has gone,” he said. “I think frankly you’ll see a period where they want to adjust the price upwards, but it’s a very fragile tactic because you don’t want to put the market off.” Mr Bevan said Air Asia X’s brief foray into Christchurch might have created benefits for other airlines by helping to lift awareness of the city as a destination.

“For them, there might be a dividend in terms of passenger volumes. Also, area directs have done a big job marketing Christchurch so there is a double benefit there.”

Reassurance: Christchurch International Airport chief executive Jim Boult says Air Asia X leaving town is unlikely to spur fare hikes.

Pregnant women may be offered vaccine for whooping cough TomDoudney

THE Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) may offer immunisation to pregnant women in order to contain a worsening whooping cough epidemic. CDHB medical officer of health Dr Ramon Pink said the country was in the grip of a national epidemic, which tended to come around every four to six years as a result of waning immunity. “West Coast, Nelson and Marlborough were hit really badly (by whooping cough) in the middle of last year and we have started to follow suit here in Canterbury. We’ve got high numbers and will continue to have high numbers for the next 12 to 18 months.” Dr Pink said younger children were most at risk from whooping cough and CDHB was considering offering immunisation to pregnant mothers in the last stage of pregnancy. “That not only gives mum protection against whooping cough but also by the antibodies that she generates from the immunisations, those can go across the placenta to baby and give baby protection before baby gets their first vaccine (at six weeks old).” The fact that some parts of the community were still experiencing a reduced quality of

living and working environments due to the earthquakes was also likely to increase prevalence of whooping cough. “There has been a lot of disruption to our lives, to our homes through damage. Our work places may be temporary and cramped, we’re Ramon Pink stressed and we’re all crammed into smaller homes and living conditions and all of those makes us more vulnerable to being unwell so it’s really important that we provide as much protection for the community as we can.” With the structural impact of the earthquakes on health facilities and the subsequent loss of bed space, it was particularly important to try and keep the community as well as possible so as not to overburden an already struggling health system, Dr Pink said.

Running the country for St John HIS mates think he’s mad but the real reason Spreydon resident Mathew Broad is running the length of New Zealand is for his late grandfather. Mr Broad is now 13 days into his 35-day run (including four rest days) from Cape Reinga to Bluff. The 23-year-old Stonewood Homes draftsman is taking part in the North 2 South challenge to try and raise at least $30,000 for St John. Mr Broad’s grandfather Russell Hodges, who passed away two years ago, had worked for St John in Winton, Southland. “My granddad always devoted his time to supporting his local community and helping others,” he said. “He was particularly passionate about St John and spent many years supporting them as both an officer and regional chairman. I’ve been thinking about doing this run for a few years now and in doing so carry on the good work my granddad started.” Mr Broad, who has run the Kepler Challenge Mountain Run several times over the last few years, is running around 75km a day. He had spent the last year training for North 2 South and had put in a great deal of time in planning it as well. “The old organising stuff has taken a lot

Muscles wanted for Sefton Tug of War

Tough competition: Team Buzz Bar give it their all at the Sefton Tug of War.

ORGANISERS of this year’s Sefton Tug of War competition are hoping it will attract competitors from all over the Canterbury region. The competition attracted about 400 competitors and 600 spectators to the inaugural event last year, and organiser Richard Lange said he hopes to double that this year. Hellers Meats NZ entered four teams last year and had “such a whale of a time” that they have committed funding to the event for the next three years, Mr Lange said. “We want this to be something to draw the community together,” he said. Monetary prizes are up for grabs and include Photo: Supplied

a $1500 first prize for the trophy pool where teams’ combined weight limit is 760kg; $1000 first prize for the mixed pool (no weight limit) and $500 prize for a speed trial where teams of four compete for the fastest time to pull a vehicle. Spot prizes will also be given out throughout the day and there will be prizes for the best-dressed team. Money raised on the day would go towards providing Sefton School with new computers and iPads in preparation for the roll out of ultra-fast broadband later this year, Mr Lange said. Teams can register on www.tugofwar.sefiton. org.nz up until April 20.

Sports stadium to reopen COWLES Stadium will reopen in early August after the Christchurch City Council approved funding to repair and strengthen the existing stadium last week. Work on the Pages Road stadium to strengthen the building to 100 percent of the new building standard is expected to begin next month at a cost of $480,000. The proposed work includes minor repairs to roof and wall bracing. A geotechnical report has shown that some of the land underneath the building has settled but that has not significantly affected the building. The council has decided not to remediate the land and the building’s foundations at this time. This work would cost an estimated $3million to $5m and would require an insurance settlement, which would take an estimated 18 months to finalise. Cowles Stadium is a large, multi-functional, indoor venue that has hosted many international and national sports competitions. It was also used as a welfare centre after the September 2010 and February and June 2011 earthquakes. General manager community services Michael Aitken said that by doing earthquake repairs and strengthening now, the stadium

can be operating much sooner than if the council decided to remediate the land and the building’s foundations. “This is a very cost-effective solution to fix the building and ensure it is available for use by our community for the next 20 years. There is a critical shortage of indoor courts across the city following the earthquakes, which will be alleviated by Cowles Stadium being able to reopen. This facility is also a focal point for one of our hardest-hit communities postearthquake and its reopening will be a morale boost for them,” Mr Aitken said. Mayor Bob Parker said it was great news that Cowles Stadium will be able to reopen this year. “This facility is important for many sporting groups in Christchurch, who I know will greatly welcome its return, especially over the winter months. It is also important to have an emergency centre on the eastern side of the city and Cowles Stadium has served this purpose well.” Cowles Stadium has been closed since last year after a detailed engineering evaluation (DEE) showed there was damage to the roof trusses. It also showed the building was 10 to 66 percent of the New Building Standard.

News in brief Arts Centre seeks new CEO THE Christchurch Arts Centre has begun the search for a chief executive to replace outgoing director Ken Franklin. The new appointee’s role will focus on the rebuild of the campus’ historic buildings and preparation for the return of arts and culture events and businesses to the inner-city precinct. Mr Franklin will remain in an acting role until a suitable candidate is found and will continue to manage the Arts Centre’s insurance position. Arts Centre Trust Board chairperson Cindy Robinson said

the new role reflected the need for the Arts Centre to concentrate on the restoration process. “The focus for the new chief executive will continue to be the rebuilding and revitalising of our historic buildings as well as sourcing additional funding for the project, which is key to us returning the Arts Centre to the city in its role as a major culture and heritage resource.” The search for the chief executive is being conducted by Sheffield Consulting Group. An appointment will be made for a five-year fixed term.

Christchurch City Council news, events and information 11 April 2012

Find out about Council facilities The public can now check what is happening with Christchurch City Council-owned facilities via a new tool launched on the Council website last week. The website tool has been developed as part of the Council’s Facilities Rebuild Plan project, which is looking at the future of the Council’s 1600 facilities, following the earthquakes.

An artist’s impression from the Central City Plan.

Work progresses in Central City Work on Central City projects by the Christchurch City Council during the last three months has focused on creating an environment that supports and promotes confidence in the Central City. Last week’s Council meeting received the first Central City Recovery Plan Quarterly Report which detailed the work undertaken since the start of the year on temporary projects. “This phase, while the Government

approves the draft Plan, has allowed the Council to set-up the systems and processes to support recovery and begin to put in place transitional or temporary elements to help make the Central City attractive to investors, tenants and retailers,” says Mayor Bob Parker.

“Staff have been working on temporary streetscape designs to support the reopening of the Central City core, making the area attractive for vehicles, pedestrians and other road users.”

Interpretation panels are completed and will soon be erected along Oxford Terrace, near Re:Start, to promote the future vision for Papawai Ōtakaro and work is underway creating a programme of art installations linking the Canterbury Museum and Botanic Gardens along the river to Re:Start.

Early in the development of the draft Central City Plan, the Council made a commitment to provide a temporary location for EPIC (Enterprise Precinct and Innovation Campus) to relocate 30 earthquakedisplaced IT businesses, says Mayor Bob Parker. “The Council agreed back in July 2011 to provide the former Para Rubber site, on the corner of Manchester and Tuam streets, for the development rent-free for up to

five years, and to work with EPIC to find a permanent home for an IT sector hub in the city.” Mr Parker says Council was able to provide a site for the campus from its land holdings which had been purchased to enable a comprehensive redevelopment of the Central City South area in line with its plans to revitalise the Central City. “EPIC will ultimately house more than 400 employees working for more than 30 small-to-mediumsized businesses, providing innovative technology solutions to a global market.

“These will start to appear as Council works with property owners and developers in coming months.” A snapshot of Council facilities.

Council supports innovative IT hub Christchurch City Council played an instrumental role in last week’s launch of EPIC, a new high-tech hub in the Central City.

It will allow the public to search for information on whether a building is open, closed or demolished. It will also be possible to see the level of engineering assessment a building has undergone and when it is expected to receive a Detailed Engineering Evaluation (DEE) assessment. The decision made about a building is also searchable via the website tool. Although decisions have not yet been made about most of the Council’s facilities, there are a number of possible scenarios for a building, including to repair, rebuild, or demolish and not replace.

Update on the Facilities Rebuild Plan

“These businesses will deliver highvalue employment opportunities in the Central City and provide a catalyst to attract both businesses and people back to the area. This is so critical in restoring confidence in the Central City.” Mr Parker says this is one of the projects detailed in the draft Central City Recovery Plan and it’s great to see the project get underway. In coming weeks, the Council will also undertake landscape improvements in the area to support the development.

@ChristchurchCC

One way streets – let’s get clear There will be no decision by Council on the future of one way streets in the Central City in the immediate future. The Council is awaiting feedback from the Minister of Earthquake Recovery, Gerry Brownlee, on the transport network provisions in the Draft Central City Recovery Plan, which includes the proposal to convert existing one way streets to two way. That would be followed by a comprehensive examination by Council of all future transport proposals approved in the plan, including timing, cost, and logistics of the changes.

Mayor Bob Parker says, “The Council will not consider such a significant change as the removal of the one way system without extensive research and public consultation. “The one way streets form a key part of the traffic network and any change would need to be carefully phased in. They would need to be integrated with changes elsewhere in the network first, including the upgrading of the four avenues and other key parts for the network. This cannot happen without indepth consultation with transport providers, road users, landowners, and the public.”

New book reveals rare library treasures A RARE German Bible, a 15th-century genealogical roll and papers from a World War II war crimes trial are among the unique and seldom-seen items showcased in Treasures of the University of Canterbury Library. Among the rare treasures in this latest book from Canterbury University Press is a 1494 Lübeck Bible, the only one in the Southern Hemisphere, an original printing of the 1611 King James Bible and papers from the April 1946 to November 1948 trials of Japanese war criminals. “There are some remarkable items in the collection. We have a 15th-century English genealogical roll, which is 16 feet (almost five metres) long. It’s an unusual and unique item, a family tree written by hand ostensibly from Noah down to the English King Edward IV,” senior lecturer in medieval history at the university, Dr Chris Jones said. Treasures of the University of Canterbury Library is edited by Dr Jones and Bronwyn Matthews with Dr Jennifer Clement. To accompany the book, the Canterbury Museum is mounting an exhibition, Canterbury Tales, which will feature a selection of rare books from the University of Canterbury and items from the Canterbury Museum collection to provide interesting, quirky and thought-provoking linkages. Treasures of the University of Canterbury Library and Canterbury Tales will be launched on May 17 at the Canterbury Museum.

Anzac messages for Kiwi forces abroad NEW ZEALANDERS can take hearing from their family and friends on significant days and holidays for granted, but for Defence Force members serving overseas, contact from home on Anzac Day is especially important. New Zealand currently has 831 Defence Force personnel deployed on 16 operations, United Nations missions and defence exercises across 12 countries.

Commander Joint Forces Major General Dave Gawn said military people spend long periods of time away from their families and friends and Anzac Day was an especially significant day. “We have set up a message box on the New Zealand Defence Force website so the public can send an Anzac Day message to military personnel deployed overseas. We have done

this for the past four years and the messages are always well received.” The messages will be sent to each overseas mission on April 24, the day before Anzac Day, and can be either a general message or for an individual. “Anzac Day is a day to commemorate the past but is also a day when we reflect on the work of our defence personnel currently

serving our country both in New Zealand and overseas. The values they hold today are the same as those held by the ANZACs of the First World War,” Major General Gawn said. “We hope that New Zealanders show their support for our military personnel serving around the world on Anzac Day.” To post a message, visit http://forms.nzdf. mil.nz/nzdf/dpru-anzac-contactform.asp.

The cough and cold season seems to have started with a number of people coming into our store with cold symptoms.

What is a cold?

The common cold is a viral infection that mainly affects the nose and throat. It usually lasts for only two to three days and is a mild illness in healthy people. Colds are very infectious and are easily spread from person to person by droplets from coughing and sneezing. It can also be spread by close contact with an infected person for example by shaking hands.

What are the symptoms of a cold?

Usually with a cold you will have watery eyes and a runny nose. You may also have a cough, a sore throat or sneeze. Sometimes people get mild headaches. Sometimes people get confused about whether they have the flu or a cold. The symptoms of a cold are much less severe than those of the flu. With a cold you are very unlikely to have a high fever or to have muscle and joint aches and pains. Tiredness and weakness are much less severe with a cold. With the flu you often feel so unwell you are unable to work or to play sport.

Problems associated with colds?

Sometimes people may get bacterial infections following a cold. Most people will get over a cold in just a few days. However several things can be done to make you feel more comfortable when you have a cold. • Drink plenty of fluid • Resting helps your body fight off a cold • Decongestant products can be used to clear a runny or blocked nose. Decongestant nose sprays or drops, such as Otrivin should only be used for three to four days in order to prevent rebound congestion occurring. Decongestant tablets will also help clear up a runny nose, but can cause restlessness and insomnia in some people. They can interact with some other medications, so check with the pharmacist if they are suitable for you. • Products like Panadol or Pamol for children can be used for pain relief • Some people find steam inhalations useful in clearing congestion. A few drops of Eucalyptus oil or adding some Vicks VapoRub to a bowl of hot water and inhaling the vapour can help clear the nose • Lozenges like Difflam can provide relief for sore throats • Natural products containing Zinc and Vitamin C may shorten the time you have a cold and may make it less severe.

Thought-provoking: A man views prints on display during the recent Auckland exhibition. Photo: Greenpeace/Nigel Marple

A COLLECTION of original prints made using a little blue penguin and a diving petrel killed by the Rena oil spill are on display in the Re:start shopping mall. Greenpeace campaigner Steve Abel said the prints were a memorial to birds killed by the Rena’s oil as well as “a stark reminder of the dangers of opening up New Zealand waters to deep sea oil drilling”. The two birds were found dead and covered in oil on Matakana Island by Greenpeace volunteers when they were helping the local iwi, Nga Hapu o te Moutere o Matakana, clean oil off the beaches. An art collective made up of creative staff from

advertising agency Publicis Mojo and Greenpeace volunteers came up with the concept of making ‘oil prints’ with the birds, using some of the oil from the Rena, and donated their time to create the prints. Ten of the prints were made on canvas; another 20 were used as A3 posters. Christchurch is the second centre to have hosted the exhibition, after Auckland. According to Greenpeace, more than 138,000 people have signed its petition to stop any deep sea oil drilling - and the expansion of coal mining - in New Zealand, in favour of a clean energy future.

Stronger Christchurch

THURSDAY APRIL 12 2012

Project funded by

SCIRT: The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team is repairing the city’s earthquake damaged roads, fresh water, wastewater and stormwater pipes.

Infrastructure Rebuild Team

Getting along together on the streets While SCIRT work by its very nature can be highly disruptive in our neighbourhoods, SCIRT contractors are heartened at the kindness of many people. It has become quite common place for residents to show their appreciation to workers by baking them morning teas. “The contractors on the ground are often what makes or breaks a project,” says SCIRT General Manager Duncan Gibb. “It’s great to see so many people being accommodating in these challenging times.” Some special thanks was received from a resident recently concerning the contractors working on Woodham Road’s wastewater renewal project. Subcontracted to Downer, Worthington’s staff have been on the project since November last year. This project has been very complicated involving major traffic management, sometimes resulting in significant disruption to residents.

Keeping in touch The people of Christchurch are at the heart of SCIRT’s rebuild programme. We provide a range of different ways for you to stay informed - so keep an eye on these places: ONLINE: If you have access to a computer then our website is an excellent way to get up to date information about any works in your area: Log on to: www.strongerchristchurch.govt.nz Sign up to our regular e-newsletter Follow us on Twitter @SCIRT_info IN YOUR COMMUNITY: If you are visiting one of the Christchurch City Council libraries/service centres, look out for our distinctive SCIRT display boards. They contain fact sheets about the work SCIRT is doing. Translated fact sheets are currently being prepared. These will be available in Chinese, Korean and Samoan and will be distributed through the Rewi Alley Cultural and Education Centre, Aranui Community Trust and Christchurch Migrants Centre.

NEWSPAPERS: Watch out for our regular updates in Christchurch newspapers. LETTERBOX: Keep an eye on your letterbox for notification about upcoming works in your street.

Staff have gone above and beyond the usual courtesies for the residents of Woodham Road, making sure they keep them as well informed as possible. One resident emailed us this comment: “The reason I am sending this email is to commend your workers. I live right at the end (of the road) so they have been working right in front of my house. Sometimes I will ask them if they can move so I can exit the driveway and they are always polite. They have been a pleasure to see. I am also profoundly deaf and they have been very accommodating with trying to communicate with me and I am impressed with them. So thank you for having such a great team of blokes with a great attitude!” Politeness and understanding go a long way in these circumstances. It’s good to see that the efforts of the workers on the ground are not unnoticed. In return, many communities are learning more about their city’s usually invisible services and gaining some friendly new faces on the streets.

Woodham Road project workers enjoy a gift of baking as thanks from a resident for their everyday thoughtfulness.

More projects get off the ground each month SCIRT contractors are working on a huge range of projects in the city. The table below includes works that have recently started and updates on others. Location

By-election for Riccarton Wigram Samantha Early

RICCARTON Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora is hoping for a diverse selection of candidates to step forward to take the place of long-serving board member Ishwar Ganda. Mr Ganda passed away on March 24 in Christchurch Hospital after suffering a heart attack. A by-election will be held on Friday, June 22, for the vacant position. Mr Ganda, 67, had a 30-year history of involvement with local government, including serving on the Paparoa County Council, the Christchurch City Council and the community board. He was awarded a Queen’s Service Order and appointed as a Justice of the Peace and was also involved with a long list of community organisations. Mr Mora said it would be up to the community to nominate and the People’s

Choice (formerly Christchurch 2021) group, of which he and Mr Ganda were members, was looking for suitable candidates. “Ish will be a loss because of all that institutional knowledge he’s had. Ideally, we would like to see somebody that has a history of involvement in our ward and understands the issues that we’re going to be facing over the next few years.” He said as the city moved westwards following the earthquakes, big developments were taking place. “We’re trying to have to speed that process up as much as we can and really try and get the best results for the wider community out of the individual subdivisions so that they blend together coherently.” Mr Mora hoped they would have a higher voter turnout than the 35 percent in the recent Burwood-Pegasus by-election, which saw Peter Beck elected to the city council.

“This ward hasn’t been as badly affected as the Burwood-Pegasus ward so we would expect that the people will be more interested.” Seven people put their names forward as candidates for a by-election in the neighbouring Spreydon-Heathcote ward, which will be held on May 11 to replace Mike Thorley, who moved to Australia. Nominations for the Riccarton-Wigram community board member by-election are open until midday on Thursday, May 3, with forms available from the Upper Riccarton Library and the Civic Office on Hereford Street. The preliminary electoral roll is also open until Thursday, May 3, for people to check. Voting papers will be sent to enrolled residents from Wednesday, May 30, with voting closing on Friday, June 22, at midday.

New adventure for Thorrington principal

Easter message News in brief in art

Somerfield spell-a-thon

Samantha Early

LAST Thursday marked the end of seven and a half years at Thorrington School for its principal Paul Armitage. Mr Armitage has moved to be principal of Elmwood Normal School. “It’s an opportunity to go into a bigger school and also a school with a different focus,” he said. ‘Normal’ schools have a connection with universities, with trainee teachers going there for demonstration lessons. Mr Armitage said he had a good length of time at Thorrington School, which has about 434 pupils, and he managed to fulfil the vision he had. “It’s a good time to move on and let someone else come in and continue to build on what has

been established in the school.” The Thorrington school board has appointed Faye LeCren as the relieving principal for term two and a new principal will start in term three. Mr Armitage had a community farewell function last week and a staff goodbye and special school assembly on his last day. “What makes Thorrington special are the students, the parents and the teachers and the absolute commitment we all make to provide the very best education that we can for the kids.” He was looking forward to a new challenge to build on his 27 years of education experience. “I’ll leave with really fond memories of a great school.”

If you have an open fire or an expiring wood fire you CAN install a NEW fire

THE Somerfield School community has raised more than $12,000 in a ‘Spell-athon’, its best result yet. In the parent-teacher association fundraiser, the school children were sponsored to learn a list of spelling words during term one. The funds will to go towards upgrading the school’s information and communication technology equipment.

Easter message: Artist Peter Majendie, who was behind the February 22 white chairs memorial and Christmas Ark of Hope and Labyrinths, produced an art installation at Spreydon Baptist Church to mark Easter. He produced seven scenes in the church hall representing themes like loneliness and accusation. Mr Majendie said the black-andwhite themed installation was open over Easter weekend and transformed on Easter Sunday with thousands of bright flowers to symbolise the resurrection of Jesus. INTEGRATED Hydraulics Ltd (IHL) unveiled three new, state of the art machines at an innovation showcase held at the company’s Hornby plant last week. IHL employs 35 staff and exports many of the hydraulic manifolds it designs and manufactures for a variety of industries such as agriculture, mining and automation, to Australia and Asia. IHL general manager Nick Lawry, left, said the new machines would start lifting the company’s productivity over the next two months and over the next 18 months would boost output by around 40 per cent. “We’re very impressed with what they can do and it’s all about the productivity that it gives to our business and the ability to ramp production both up and down in difficult times.”

THERE’S a call for a major sports facility to be built in the Riccarton-Wigram ward instead of the central city. A ‘metro sports hub’ to replace the damaged QE11 and Centennial facilities is proposed under the Christchurch City Council’s draft central city plan. However, Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said that as the city moved south-west, there was the opportunity to have a sports hub in the ward including the QE11 pool, athletics track and cycling velodromes. “There are some opportunities here now before too much development takes place to look at the options of rebuilding those assets but on really good-quality land,” he said.

A feast for film buffs Gina McKenzie

CINEMA lovers will relish the classic and rare films screening during the Canterbury Film Society’s film season, which runs until September in Sumner. New Zealand Federation of Film Societies president Ryan Reynolds said the film season aims to expose cinema-goers to quality films that rarely make it to the big screen, along with a number of classic titles. “We want to give people an understanding of different types of films from around the world and New Zealand that are rarely found on screen. “There are some real gems this year that have never been seen on New Zealand screens before.” The Flight and The Third Kind, two Czech films set in the late 1960s just before the Soviet invasion, are included on Mr Ryan’s list of highlights. “They show an interesting time in Czech history when reforms were making the country more progressive before the crackdown by the Soviets.” Mr Ryan said martial arts enthusiasts should enjoy Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai’s Ashes of Time Redux. “He pioneered martial arts films before they

became popular in Hollywood and this is where the genre originated. This is one of the most famous Asian films of its type.” For a slice of Kiwiana, Mr Ryan recommends New feast: Zealand documentary Cinematic New Zealand Blerta Revisited, Federation of Film which takes viewers Societies president on a tour of 1970s’ Ryan Reynolds is New Zealand in a excited about the mix of classic and rare flower-powered bus. “It’s a really films selected for the Canterbury Film nostalgic look back Society’s 2012 cinema at what New Zealand season. life was like in that decade.” The films screen on Monday evenings at Hollywood 3 in Sumner. ‘A certainty of Chaos’

ANNIE Crummer will make her debut at the New Zealand International Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday in North Hagley Park. The festival will feature over 110 international, national and local musicians for five days and nights of jazz music. Crummer said she is delighted to be performing in Christchurch. “I’ll be bringing songs of my music history with a sprinkling of fresh ones from my upcoming CD, Project Annie.c.’’ Crummer will be performing alongside

an exhibition created by artist Nina Cook This body of work explores my mind-set over the past year. Through earthquakes and the result of architectural, domestic and personal upheavals, the realisation of the depth of my attachments to the physical world and the imagined solidity these attachments afforded me. I have come to realise I am little more than a curious infant in my comprehension of the world, its workings and my part in it. A pantheon of Gods, a culture of bacteria, a charm of hummingbirds, a superfluity of nuns, an implausibility of gnus, a plethora of ideas. And, if I have learned anything in the past year, a cluster of chaotic events is a certainty. In science, chaos theory is about finding the underlying order in apparently random data. In life, it is a lesson in control, or lack thereof. It is no surprise that chaos theory’s first practitioner was a meteorologist – Edward Lorenz. We in Christchurch expend a lot of energy predicting and analysing the spiralling

unpredictability’s of weather and this ethos has readily transferred to earthquakes – to no effect, but it makes us feel better. The fractal structures that IBM employee, Benoit Mandelbrot, found in cotton price fluctuations moved chaos theory into the real world. Everything – from blood vessels to plate tectonics- and probably even our DNA, follow the same apparently chaotic spiral paths that reflect the rhythm of life that drives all things. They (we) are self-similar - chaotic fractals. The black frames are an expression of desire for control – to capture and confine ideas. The ideas are sections of spiralling combinations of emotional (disordered?) and intellectual (ordered?) responses to specific situations and ideas. They are an attempt to gain understanding.

Christchurch funk outfit, Oval Office, who play an engaging mix of original funk and soul fused with jazz and blues influences. Their music delivers hard-hitting grooves, explosive horn lines and soulful vocals. The festival will cap off a busy few months for Crummer, who has also been performing with her father’s band, Will Crummer and the Rarotongans. Festival director Jodi Wright is thrilled Crummer has agreed to be part of the festival line-up. Tickets for Crummer’s concert are available now through Dash Ticketing. The concert will be held in the GeoDome at the North Hagley Events Village, starting at 8pm. Get a mole check today

A

t the Opawa Surgery, GP Dr John Dewsbury sub-specialises in melanoma detection. With the aid of a dermascope and a siascope (computer-aided digital camera), he checks moles for suspicious features. Full body examinations are carried out and the patient is reassured or otherwise of being melanoma-free. Advice is given with regards to other skin lesions, their personal risk, self-surveillance and preventative measures. For the most part, it is the “peace of mind of the industry”. However, if suspicious lesions are found, then other services are offered in terms of excisions or referrals and so on. New Zealanders do have a high prevalence of melanoma. By having formal mole checks, you will have peace of mind and may also help increase the survival rates for malignant melanoma, the most serious of all skin cancers. Mole checks at Opawa Surgery are by appointment only at 122 Opawa Road. Phone: 332 7366.

Presentation and patient reporting About half of all melanomas are first identified by the person themselves. The individual is often in a better position to observe changes and symptoms of skin lesions than their doctor. If a person expresses concern about a particular lesion, reassurance should be given only when there is no doubt about the nature of the lesion. If there is any doubt, repeat observation after 1 to 2 months is essential.

Health first: Don’t wait until it’s too late to get your moles checked by Opawa Surgery.

Early diagnosis is the aim Achievement of a high level of survival from melanoma largely depends on early diagnosis by the primary care clinician. Early diagnosis requires careful observation of the body skin surface, examination of suspicious lesions with good illumination, with dermoscopy if possible and awareness of the clinical

appearance and risk factors. Melanoma may be found opportunistically during clinical examinations for other indications. In the absence of any substantial evidence as to its effectiveness in reducing mortality from melanoma, population-based skin screening cannot be recommended.

How much preparation do you do for anything that is going to happen? How much detail do you think about when preparing? Do you spend quite some time thinking about all the possibilities and weighing up the consequences? Maybe you do this because you like to feel in total control of what is going to happen, so that you feel comfortable and safe. Maybe you also direct people around you so that you have control of the situation. And then the unexpected happens! It goes wrong! What then? How can that happen when you spent so much time planning? It’s impossible when your brain worked out everything so thoroughly. How do you feel then? It’s hard to accept and adapt when everything has been thought out so completely. However, life is so vast that anything unexpected can happen at any time. Understand what is happening for you, and that you prepare so thoroughly because you need to feel safe. annette@emotionaltherapy.co.nz

he Dispensary has found a new permanent home, diagonally opposite Bealey Avenue’s 24 Hour Surgery, offering a handy city location to fill that prescription or to purchase other pharmacy items. Located next to Christchurch Doctors in Colombo Street, The Dispensary offers a range of medicines, skincare and nutritional products. The Dispensary worked out of a small location on the corner of Bealey Avenue and Madras Street postearthquake until moving into their new premises at 914 Colombo Street. Passport photos are available at The Dispensary and they also stock Trilogy, New Zealand’s number one skincare range. Imedeen is also in-store - a very popular product with anti-ageing, skincare and sun care formulations that work from within to improve the quality and appearance of the skin, from top to toe. Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes

www.bnd.co.nz

Catherine has been enjoying the single life for long enough to know a good catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic, spontaneous - Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell. But there is a darker side to Lee. His erratic, controlling and sometimes frightening behaviour means that Catherine is increasingly isolated. Driven into the darkest corner of her world, and trusting no one, she plans a meticulous escape. Four years later, struggling to overcome her demons, Catherine dares to believe she might be safe from harm. Until one phone call changes everything. This is an edgy and powerful first novel, utterly convincing in its portrayal of obsession, and a tour de force of suspense.

The Lavender Keeper Country Manager Tim Dalzell, Country Manager B&D Doors and Gareth Bines, Mainland Press

B&D Doors New Zealand Country Manager Tim Dalzell today announced the company will donate a total of five garage door and opener packages to deserving Canterbury community groups. There will be no more drafty, leaky or jammed garage doors for these groups – Rolleston Playcentre, SkillWise at City East Church, Sumner Community Pool (2 doors), and North Beach Scout Group – all will receive free fully installed garage doors and openers. “We’d originally planned two, but it was simply too hard to decide. These groups are in real need, and a new garage door will make a big difference to the services they provide to their members and the wider community,” says Mr Dalzell. Groups had to write 250 words on why they would be most deserving of the products and submit it to Mainland Press with photos by March 19. The lucky winners won’t have to wait long for their prize. “The doors will be installed by our local Garador and Dominator dealerships. The wider B&D team from the Christchurch factory are delighted that they have been able to support the community in this way,” says Mr Dalzell.

by Fiona McIntosh ‘Are you German or are you French? Are you working against Germany or for it? Are you telling me the truth, or are you a very accomplished liar?’ Lavender farmer Luc Bonet is raised by a wealthy Jewish family in the foothills of the French Alps. When the Second World War breaks out he joins the French Resistance, leaving behind his family’s fortune, their home overrun by soldiers, their lavender fields in disarray. Lisette Forestier is on a mission of her own: to work her way into the heart of a senior German officer – and to bring down the Reich in any way she can. What Luc and Lisette hadn’t counted on was meeting each other. When they come together at the height of the Paris occupation, German traitors are plotting to change the course of history. But who, if anyone, can be trusted? As Luc and Lisette’s emotions threaten to betray them, their love may prove the greatest risk of all. From the fields of Provence to the streets of wartime Paris, The Lavender Keeper is an extraordinary, moving story of action and adventure, heartbreak and passion, devotion and treachery from an internationally bestselling author.

Food for the soul

I

am obsessed by food; it’s the first thing I think about when I wake up. My job is all about growing food and each night I enjoy cooking it or going out for it. It underpins my life; without it, we simply wouldn’t exist. I am partial to liquid refreshments too, but that’s a whole different story. Whether you grow or buy your own food, it’s important to know where and how your food gets from the paddock to your plate. More and more of us are drawn into the captivating and rewarding world of growing your own. Recently, garden centres have reported an increase of around 35 per cent in vegetable seedling sales. The interest in growing plants from seeds is strong, as is harvesting your own fruit and berries, and flowers are making a comeback. Fingers crossed that this signals the end of the Stone Age where grasses and flax gardens reigned supreme. Essential to successful crop growth is plant food or fertiliser. Soil fertility is underpinned by a blend of healthy, balanced ingredients and fresh produce. For the home gardeners, it’s important to understand that it is essential to feed your soil so it can feed you. Gardeners have successfully used nitrogen-based fertilisers for years such as Nitrophoska and Osmocote to grow plants. There are a few downsides to these fertilisers. Some didn’t release the nutrients when the soil temperatures were

too hot or cold, others were too quick to release their nutrients and dumped them all into the soil at once, causing the plants to bolt. In addition, sometimes the nutrient would leech out of the soil before the plant could take it up. Scientists and horticultural technicians need to be commended for persevering with the challenges of creating the perfect plant food and fertiliser. Globally, fertiliser runoff is a major issue. For years, manufacturers have been trying to find a solution. Recent research and trials have seen the launch of a revolutionary new generation fertiliser called NovaTec, which combats all the major issues. This stuff is what the gardening world has been waiting for; it’s like a superhero for plants in a bright purple bag. NovaTec is the only fertiliser that has this innovative nitrogen stabilising technology. This technology allows a sustained release of nutrients such as nitrogen into the soil. It stays in the soil around the root zone for when plants need it. The form of nitrogen in NovaTec is very easy for the plant to absorb, letting the plant concentrate on producing more fruit and flowers, giving

gardeners, orchardists and market gardeners exceptional results. I use it all round the garden, in the vege garden, in my pots and I have even used it along my newly planted hedge of grisilinea. It’s great stuff. Hunt some down, it’s well worthwhile asking for it by name. Happy gardening! www.thehappygardener.co.nz

For the cream cheese layer 200g cream cheese 1 egg 40g caster sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla extract *I used Squires’ Extra Red Gel.

Line a 12-hole cupcake tray with paper cases and preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius/325 degrees Farenheit/gas 3. First, make the cream cheese layer by beating the cream cheese with the egg, sugar and vanilla extract. Keep it standing by. Make the red velvet mix by melting the butter. Put into a bowl with the sugar and beat well. Next – in this exact order! Something to do with chemical jiggery-pokery that I can’t explain, but must be observed – add the vanilla extract, the cocoa powder, the salt, the food colouring and the vinegar, beating between each addition. In a separate bowl, beat your eggs, then add to the butter/cocoa mix. Sieve in the flour and fold through. Divide most of the mix among the paper cases, reserving perhaps a fifth. Then, dollop a lump of cream cheese mix into each paper case on top of the red velvet mix. Then, divide the remaining red velvet mix into the paper cases, on top of the cream cheese mix. Now, swirl. You can use a cocktail stick, but I used a bamboo skewer – something with a bit of length is nice because you can get right down into the red velvet mix and dredge up its murky depths – and twirl and swirl until the red and white mixes are beautifully striped. This is an extremely enjoyable exercise, so enjoyable that I never want to stop, but I must because if I don’t, the two mixes will become one and the whole thing will be pointless. Bake for 17 to 20 minutes. Cool fully on a wire rack.

According to my research, Red Velvets date from the olden days when cocoa powder was a much lighter colour than it is now. During the baking process, the acid in the cake mix (sometimes provided by buttermilk, sometimes, as in this recipe, by vinegar) chemically reacted to create the distinctive red colour. Nowadays, though, with cocoa powder being so dark, the red colour is provided by food colouring. Nevertheless, the yumminess remains the same. It seems to be a given that Red Velvets are served with cream cheese frosting, but I’ve gone a little experimental here and incorporated a cream cheese layer into the mix, so the frosting is ‘built in’, if you get me. It is ‘swirled through’ and actually baked into each little cake, which not only looks beautiful, but means you don’t have to do any decorating or icing at the end.

Revealing comedy at Court Theatre AN EVENING of comedy is on offer with The Court Theatre’s latest production Calendar Girls. The show by Tim Firth is inspired by the true story of a Yorkshire branch of the Women’s Institute, who used their annual calendar as a fundraising project to raise money for cancer by posing nude. The response – both to the calendar and the women themselves – was incredible: to date, the original “calendar girls” have raised over £2 million for leukaemia research. Their story was made into a hit film in 2003 and adapted for the stage in 2008, where it enjoyed international acclaim. Director Alison Quigan described the play as a beautiful story about women supporting each other. “At its heart is the friendship of women who are there to support each other and give each

other strength to cope with all the things life tightly-choreographed sequence using 391 strategically-placed props to ensure only the throws at them.” The cast consists of Annie Whittle, Janice actresses’ smiles will be in full view. Calendar Girls runs until April 28 in Bernard Gray, Jude Gibson, Avril Thresh, Michael Keir Morrissey, Ali Harper, Juliet Reynolds- Street, Addington with shows at 6.30pm on Midgley, along with newcomers Carl Dixon, Monday and Thursday and 7.30pm on Tuesday, Amanda Tollemache and Lyndee-Jane Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. There will Rutherford and recently appointed associate of be a 2pm matinee on Saturday. Tickets are $48 for adults, $41 for seniors, The Court, Geoffrey Heath. Classroom catastrophe to delight audiences THE fortunes of staff at the Gwendolen Kyte School for Girls will entertain audiences in Riccarton Players’ latest production After September, which opened yesterday. Directed by Christina Stachurski, the Jimmie Chinn comedy explores the odd assortment of social misfits and eccentric types that teach at the school. Ms Stachurski said the production would take many people back to stories they read during childhood.

“Rehearsing After September is like going back to the English school stories most of the actors used to read as children, but a grown-up version. “There’s the spooky gothic mansion, a murder mystery, Trixie the school spaniel, bats in the belfry and more than a whiff of Enid Blyton.” The play begins with the arrival of a government inspector who wants to close the school down. eading south out of town, just off the Sockburn roundabout, is Advantage Tyres at 179 Main South Road. It is one of the most modern tyre facilities in Christchurch. To find Advantage Tyres, veer left off the roundabout to head under the overbridge; it’s on the left just before the bridge. Once you drive onto the premises, it’s clear to see that the facility is top-notch. Two spacious halls inside the big, blue building draw your vehicle in. On the left side is a drive-through for commercial vehicles and on the right side is for smaller vehicles, with tyre-handling equipment. At Advantage Tyres, you will not be offered just a cheap set of tyres; you will receive all the benefits of the world’s best tyre brands. It’s well-equipped to match and fit the correct tyre to any vehicle, but new manager, Mike Watkins, is not averse to heading out onto the road to deal with the

problems of any client. And he says, with his team of seven, Advantage Tyres has more than 90 years’ experience in the tyre industry. The tyres offered by Advantage Tyres include world-class brands. While we may all be looking for the best deals, the team will provide expert advice to ensure value for money and quality tyres to give you the best performance and lasting ability. It is a case of matching the best tyres to the type of vehicle and providing you with the best possible service. Stocking proven tyre brands, Advantage Tyres says owners will save money, travel safely, get the lowest cost for every kilometre, improve driving mobility and make tyre choice easier. It carries new tyres for cars, trucks, buses, forklifts – you name it. Advantage Tyres, 179 Main South Road, Sockburn; phone (03) 341 7248, Fax: (03) 3417205.

Day of Thunder

From the sideline with Pete Smith

Warren should remember what happened to Ted and the Lions

Blast from past: Tim Gerard, of Rolleston, guns his 23-year-old Ducati round the Methven track at Saturday’s Mountain Thunder event.

Crowds flocked to Methven on Saturday for the Mountain Thunder motorcycle street races – where helping fellow competitors and having a sense of humour is more important to the racers than crossing the finishing line in first place. It is the third time the races have been held in the town, and the large crowd had wonderful weather to enjoy the exhilarating racing. Competing bikes ranged from a 1926 500cc AJS, ridden by Keith McLeod, of Christchurch, to the latest Suzuki and Yamaha superbikes. The Lions Club of Methven and members of Classic Action Motorcycle Sport and the Ulysses Club made the event happen. It is hoped Mountain Thunder will become a regular event on the motorcycle racing circuit.

Bus still the best option for getting to the game CANTERBURY rugby fans will once again have the chance to take a free bus to the new AMI Stadium, this time to watch the clash between the Crusaders and the Stormers on April 14. Environment Canterbury (ECan) passenger services manager David Stenhouse said the free bus system generally worked well for the first game and most rugby goers appreciated the chance to park and ride. “The majority of the feedback from the first game was that passengers, especially the large number of families who attended the game, enjoyed the hassle-free way they could avoid parking issues and get there with relative ease,” Mr Stenhouse said. Although there had been “a few teething problems”, things were expected to go more smoothly this time.

“We can assure the public there will be plenty of buses to get everyone to the game. We have a total of 39 chartered buses for the park and ride trips from the suburban hubs, as well as our normal network services, so everyone will be catered for. “However, as with the last game, we are encouraging rugby goers to leave themselves plenty of time to get to the game and to check timetables if they are travelling by our normal network service.’’ The plan to offer free buses for ticket holders is jointly funded by ECan, Christchurch City Council, VBase and the Stadium Trust. By showing their ticket to the game, passengers will have free access to any Metro bus service between 5pm and 11pm on the day. Timetables and all details are on www.metroinfo.co.nz or you can phone Metroinfo on 366-8855.

I was intrigued to note on the wires that New Zealander Warren Gatland is being touted as the possible British and Irish Lions rugby coach for the tour down under to Australia next year. Hello, the alarm bells are ringing in my head. Isn’t this a case of ‘here we go again’? When Sir Graham Henry was being lauded in the valleys of Wales as the great redeemer, he was offered the Lions’ head coaching position and he couldn’t resist the challenge, and we all remember what a disaster that trip to Australia turned out to be. History shows that one of the most difficult teams to coach is, in fact, the Lions. They are always dogged with in-fighting and divisions among the team and while they are normally a joy to watch, a lot of the players join the squad with hidden agendas. It has proven to be a job so far for coaches to bring this team together. Let’s face it. Bringing the Home Unions together where they have been brought up with bias and bigotry,

Life members announced at Mainland Football AGM

Conditions Apply* Selected makes and models only.

THREE Christchurch football stalwarts have had their contributions to the game recognised with life memberships presented by Mainland Football at its annual general meeting last week. Bill Cowen (Cashmere Technical), Craig Rhodes (FC Twenty 11) and Martin Stewart (Nomads and Canterbury United) each received their life memberships for outstanding service over and above that carried out for their respective clubs. Mid Canterbury district group management chairman David Brown praised Cowen’s passion and commitment in supporting the recent Cashmere Technical merger and in assisting to set up Team Canterbury (Canterbury United) as well as his drive and energy in lobbying parliament to support the reparation of earthquake -damaged football fields in the eastern suburbs. Mainland Football chief executive Mike Coggan said there hadn’t been a more driven and committed volunteer sports administrator in any sport in Canterbury. Westminster Sports chief executive Eddie Cropley, speaking of Rhodes’ nomination, echoed these sentiments. Rhodes had played a significant recent role as Canterbury United chairman and continued to sit on the Mainland Football Board. He was a key driver in the FC Twenty 11 merger and had been involved in club football for many years. Stewart had a 35-year involvement in Canterbury football, starting with national league football in the days of Christchurch United. Coggan commented that Stewart’s integrity, efficiency and mild manner had seen him manage Canterbury United through three sets of coaches dating back to the early 2000s. Five life memberships have been awarded in the past two years with Jack Killick and Ross Anderson, both Canterbury referee administrators, being awarded such recognition in 2011.

Fragile stands need to come down Tania Butterfield

THE Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) has told the Christchurch City Council the outdoor stands at Queen Elizabeth II Park (QE11) have to be demolished. A Cera spokeswoman confirmed a letter requesting the main stand, covered stand, and north and south ends of the stadium be demolished was issued on April 2 under section

38 of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act 2011. The council had until yesterday to decide what to do. Council recreation and sports manager John Filsell said Cera should have used its mandate to have the outdoor stands demolished months ago. “It’s in everybody’s best interests to get those stands down

now.” The stands were literally falling to pieces, he said. “We are becoming increasingly concerned at the fragility of the outdoor stands at QEII, particularly the north and south stands,” Mr Filsell said. Continued page 2 is O HALKE PE TT THisn TO THGROVE wEE E Pu KEn bLiC d!
