Volunteer fire brigade wins national title to the overall title, namely the immediate event, controlled event, trauma challenge, and best technical team categories. The Rolleston brigade assembled a team to compete in the UFBA Regional Road Crash Rescue Challenge in October 2009 and in a few short years has overtaken several more experienced teams on the road to the top spot. Mr Manning said other teams had inspired them and generously shared their learning. “That’s the awesome thing about the event – it’s not all about the winning, but about building camaraderie and sharing knowledge with other firefighters.” The win means the team will now be funded by UFBA to compete in the world competition in Hobart in April. UFBA chief executive officer George Verry said responding to road crashes had become a significant responsibility for many fire brigades. “Facing realistic road crash scenarios in the event makes teams better equipped to respond to the unpredictable range of road crash scenarios they see in real life.”
Mr Manning said that the whole team wished to thank their employers for giving them the time off to compete and the generous Independent Metal Traders in Rolleston for giving them old cars to practise on.

IF you’re ever unlucky enough to find yourself in a car accident near Rolleston, you can count at least one thing in your favour – you’ll have the best road crash rescue team in the country to help you. In Queenstown last weekend, the Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade’s road crash rescue team beat out 16 other fire brigades to win the United Fire Brigades’ Association (UFBA) National Road Crash Rescue Challenge. Rolleston station officer Glenn Manning attributed the win to the focus and dedication of the team and their dedication to learning. “The whole team just gelled together,” he said. “We just took the learning that came from each event leading up to this point and kept building on it.” The team comprised Mr Manning, John Trounson, Scott Garriock, Dean Shuttleworth, Shannon Austin, and Marty Tier, and was managed by former brigade chief Glenn Cockburn. The team has taken out four of the competition’s seven categories, in addition

Big field set for salmon event
Three Selwyn teenagers recognised for bravery Tom Doudney
THREE Selwyn teenagers, who saved themselves and the father of two of them after their boat capsized, have been acknowledged with certificates from the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand. The certificates were presented by Selwyn District Mayor Kelvin Coe at the Selwyn District Council meeting yesterday. West Melton father Gavin Gardener, 54, his children April, 17, and Nicholas, 15, along with family friend Georgia Kimber-Thornley, 17, of Darfield, were on a fishing trip at Waipapa Bay, north of Kaikoura, in December 2010 when the accident happened. A kilometre out from shore, their 12-foot dinghy overturned and Gavin soon started suffering from chest problems and became unconscious. The three teens took turns towing him back to shore and brought him to within 30 metres of land where they were met by rescue services. Gavin said he remained grateful to his children, as well as other rescuers and emergency services who attended the scene. “It’s a bit hard being a father, you’re meant to be the one protecting your kids. I struggled with it for quite a few days after.”

Young heroes: Georgia Kimber-Thornley, April Gardener, and Nicholas Gardener saved the Gardeners’ father during a disastrous fishing trip.
He said the three were “just normal kids” who had been embarrassed by the attention they had received since the incident. April said the three were proud of what they had done and the certificates just topped things off. “It’s brought us all a lot closer and Georgia sometimes calls dad ‘dad’ without a problem; it’s quite funny. It was just teamwork; we got through it.”

ANGLERS have spent the week hoping for rain, but not too much, ahead of the 29th annual Rakaia River Salmon Fishing Competition, which starts tomorrow. A total of 750 entrants, including men, women, and children, are expected to show up for the competition, which runs through until Sunday. The river had been running low and clear prior to Monday due to a lack of nor’west wind in the region and Rakaia River Fishing Promotions executive committee member Bruce Kelly said a small amount of rain during the week would help “get some colour in the river”, creating the right conditions for the salmon run. The competition was Mr Kelly’s brainchild and he is among a handful of entrants competing this year, who were at the original event. Salmon run numbers had been low in recent years, he said. Rakaia River Fishing Promotions president Ken Lee said it was hoped that this year’s competition would be a “real feel good event” after last year’s competition was cancelled due to the February 22 earthquake. “There is a lot of talk around it, which is really good. LINCOLN High School graduate Hadleigh Frost is not just top of the class, he’s amongst the top 10 secondary school students in the country. Hadleigh, 16, was named a New Zealand Scholarship Premier Award winner for 2011 by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. He gained ‘outstanding scholarship’ grades in mathematics with calculus, physics, statistics and modelling, and science as well as ‘scholarship’ in chemistry. He always aimed high, but said he was very excited when he saw his exam results online. “I might have done a bit of a run around the uni when I saw it,” he said. He is now at the University of Canterbury, studying a Bachelor of Science with a doublemajor in maths and physics, along with a Bachelor of Engineering. “It’s arranged in such a way that it won’t be unmanageable; it’s a lot tamer than it sounds,” he said of his impressive workload. He chose not to reveal what career path he might pursue. “There are so many opportunities for all the areas I’m studying to become a career, so with all those opportunities, I’m not keen to narrow down so far yet.” He said he owed a lot to the support of his family, friends, and teachers at Lincoln High and the University of Canterbury, who allowed
him the flexibility to move forward a year in his studies and take on a university paper while still at Lincoln. “I appreciate that they’ve taken my aspirations seriously and helped me in that regard, allowing me to skip forward and do papers I otherwise couldn’t do.” Love of learning: He said although Hadleigh Frost, 16, has he didn’t enjoy been named one of New lessons and lectures, Zealand’s top secondary school scholars. he loved to learn. “I really get a massive kick out of grasping ideas.” The award means he gets $10,000 each year for up to three years of tertiary study in New Zealand as long as he maintains at least a B grade average. Hadleigh has been invited to attend the 2011 New Zealand Scholarship Top Scholar Awards ceremony in April when the winner of the Prime Minister’s Award for Academic Excellence presented to the top scholar in the 2011 examinations will be announced.

Starting the school year with a splash
We are thrilled that today we are launching the Selwyn View! Until February 22 last year, we had published the Southern View in Selwyn and southern Christchurch for over three years, and the Southern View has not been published since due to these events. However, based on feedback from locals and local businesses we found that Selwyn needs a locally owned community paper, with a 100 percent local focus. So we are delighted that today we are launching a brand new paper focused specifically on the Selwyn district, with a real community focus. The Selwyn View, which will be published fortnightly and printed on hi-bright white paper throughout, will bring you sport, community notices, school notices, trades and services, local stories, council news and reader interest stories. Local businesses operating in the Selwyn district will benefit from our local business rate which is at a 46 percent discount to our rate card, and significantly less than the published rates of other newspapers in the area. As a fortnightly paper, your advertising will benefit from two weeks of exposure to customers. Mainland Press Ltd, publisher of the Selwyn View, is a family owned Canterbury business and we are committed to our region. We are proud to be supporting the recovery of Canterbury, our communities and you. Pier & Charlotte Smulders Publishers Mainland Press pier@mainlandpress.co.nz charlotte@mainlandpress.co.nz
Hitting the surf: Despite the grey conditions, pupils from Broadfield School, near Prebbleton, enjoyed their beach education lessons on February 9 and 10 at New Brighton beach. As well as learning about topics such as sun sense, knowing your limits, being prepared and dangers at the beach, the children got some first-hand experience in the waves.
High school rolls show no major change Tom Doudney
HIGH school roll numbers in the Selwyn district are holding steady after a turbulent 2011 year for New Zealand, punctuated by the February 22 earthquake and its impact on Christchurch. Lincoln High School principal Linda Tame said this year’s roll of around 1560 was 60 below last year, but more students had returned than was predicted by the Ministry of Education. Ms Tame said year 9 enrolments from within the school zone were higher than last year and the school had elected not to accept any year 9 or 10 students from the waiting list of students living outside the school zone. “We were unsure how many would be moving into the area and we didn’t want to negatively impact the network in town. The ministry of education has sort of informally said to people,

‘don’t fill your rolls up with out of zone students because we want to keep the network stable’.” Darfield High School principal James Morris said the school’s roll of 750 was about the same as last year. “I don’t think there is a lot of spare housing out this way, so although there are a lot of subdivisions ready to go, because there are no actual houses on them yet, you don’t see that total change,” he said. “Once a bit of certainty comes from people in Christchurch and they start building houses, we’ll probably see some growth then.” Ellesmere College principal Gavin Kidd said the school’s roll stood at 520. At this time last year it had been around 550.

Colourful day at Darfield High DARFIELD High School students Faith King, Alana Fowler, Georgia Ludemann, Jens Clarkson, and Vanessa Bragan displayed their colourful costumes for the school’s annual House Mufti Day earlier this month. The house system, wherein students at the school represent four different ‘houses’ in various activities and competitions throughout the year, has been in place for the past three years. At the start of each year, a Mufti Day is held where students dress up in clothes or costumes in the colour of the house they are associated with.

‘Carfit’ aims to help older drivers A NEW programme is to be launched, helping mature Selwyn drivers “fit” their vehicles better, starting from March. Selwyn District Council and Age Concern are starting a ‘Carfit’ programme to complement their free regular confident driving courses designed to help older drivers remain confident in their driving and encourage an increased awareness of the traffic environment and other road users. Conservation work by farmers cleans up black stream A STREAM, home to one of the region’s most threatened native fish species, received a clean-up last month, thanks to a conservation programme backed by farmers. Half a dozen volunteers spent three weeks in January working on the ecological restoration of the upstream headwaters of Black Stream, near the Torlesse Range. The area is home to the endangered Canterbury mudfish, as well as several rare plant species. The work was done as part of the Catchment Care programme, an initiative set up in 2009 by Fonterra in conjunction with Conservation Volunteers New Zealand, to enhance New Zealand’s waterways and wetlands. The volunteers killed off significant areas of willow, gorse, blackberry, and Himalayan honeysuckle, planted 3000 appropriate native stems, and built stock-proof fencing along stretches of the stream where flooding was a risk, to keep farm animals and effluent out. As the stream is part of the Lake Ellesmere catchment area, it was thought work would contribute to improving the lake’s health as well.

Crowds flock to family fun day AN estimated 5000 people turned out for the inaugural Family Funday & Football Fest, which featured an appearance by football great Wynton Rufer, at Oaklands School in Halswell recently. The appearance of Rufer, who was voted football’s Oceania Player of the Century, drew almost 200 children aged between six and 12. Rufer gave the children free football coaching. Other entertainment on the day included performances from three bands, a magic show by Jonny Magic, free rides, face painting, and llamas. Organiser Gideon Hoekendijk said it was
wonderful to see families enjoying the festive atmosphere. “It’s been a difficult time in our city and this has put a smile on many faces as the community came together to celebrate family life.” Funds had been raised on the day for Oaklands School to buy new sports equipment. The event was organised by Harmony Church in partnership with Halswell United Football Club, Oaklands School and the Christchurch City Council, which provided funding for this event alongside Fonterra. Mr Hoekendijk said it was hoped it would become Rare opportunity: Around 200 kids had the chance to be coached by Wynton Rufer at the Family an annual event. Funday and Football Fest. JD Homes make you feel part of the process When the September 2010 earthquake hit, it left Richard and Sandi Hutchby in a state of shock. Their Rolleston Park home was badly damaged, not economical to repair, and written off by the insurance company, so they turned to JD Homes.
“We had a meeting with him and looked at some designs and plans, visited his home, which is also a builder’s display home, and were delighted with what he could offer.”
After meeting JD Homes company director Jesse De Wys, and feeling confident he could help them design and build a new home, things started to look up for the couple.
With the insurance company giving them the option to choose their own builder to re-build on their property, Richard and Sandi didn’t hesitate to use JD Homes. Jesse, who works alongside local architect Ross Nevin, of Ross Nevin Design and Draughting, came on board the project too.
“Jesse came highly recommended by everyone we spoke to,” says Richard.
“We worked closely with them, which was what we wanted,” says Richard.
The new modern five-bedroom home features modern fair-faced brick, linear weatherboards, and textured plywood materials. “Jesse was fantastic, he listened to what we wanted and he and his wife Marcella had great ideas and were excellent to work with and made us feel part of the process,” says Richard. “He includes you in everything and nothing is a problem. He started off as a builder but now he is a friend and they both came to our wedding held at our new home last month. We couldn’t be happier, it’s a fantastic home.” For a free consultation, phone Jesse on 021 701 265 or visit www.jdhomes.co.nz for more information.

The bloom goes on
F
lower on! Over the past year, more so than ever, I have been magnetised by the power of plants and, in particular, flowers. Flowers provide me with so much joy and they always seem so willing to share their seemingly endless energy. Their ability to germinate, bloom, flourish, and fruit gives me so much pleasure, it’s almost ridiculous. I find it very reassuring to be able to grow and harvest my own food, show and help new gardeners produce their own crops, watch the birds enjoy the garden, visit the botanical gardens, feel the sun on my face - fairly normal activities. These things, sometimes in the past, may have felt a little pedestrian and I, too, took them for granted; but now, after living through such significant life altering events, they become more important and are even more rewarding than ever. Plants are helping the garden city re-build as well as ourselves. Let them shower your life with hope and reassurance through this next period. I lost a particularly special friend on February 22, 2011, Joe Pohio. He was an absolute dynamo, in more ways than one, but gardening wasn’t his thing, although he did try to grow coriander once. The emptiness I feel at times is overwhelming, I have to remind myself it’s not just me who lost him, but everyone. Sharing grief isn’t easy, I really struggle with it, but I know it’s a necessary process. I think of him often when I look at what I planted in his memory on my patio. I have two large barrels, each planted with the same thing. Rose Faithful Friend with Sweet Pea ‘Singing the Blues’ twinning around the rose stems.
More than a Garden Centre
Faithful friend has rarely been without a flower since it started blooming in November and the sweet peas are going nuts; I have picked bunches and bunches of them for inside and to give away. On the anniversary of his passing, both these flowers will be blooming, a living reminder of such a special person. If flowers can bloom Rachel Vogan again, then so can we. The Happy Gardener Take time to enjoy what’s flowering at the moment, whether it be in the botanical gardens, a park, your own garden, or via a trip to The Ellerslie Flower Show in a few weeks. Soak up the plants’ passion, enjoy the moment, and share the joy. www.thehappygardener.co.nz

Jazz greats to perform at festival
Exhibition depicts reaction to earthquakes
Award-winning: Wellknown German jazz musician Klaus Doldinger will be one of the highlights of the International Jazz and Blues Festival.
ONE of Germany’s best known jazz musicians is coming to Christchurch to perform at the New Zealand International Jazz and Blues Festival from April 11 to 15. Klaus Doldinger wrote the score for the movie Das Boot and has performed all over the world with his band. He will be performing in Christchurch for one night only, on April 12. “Klaus Doldinger is a very accomplished jazz musician and we’re thrilled he’s agreed to come and bring his seven-piece band to Christchurch for the festival,’’ festival organiser Jodi Wright said. Also taking part in the festival is Australian jazz trumpet great, James Morrison, who will perform a tribute to the legendary Duke
Ellington, accompanied by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. Some of the best known names in New Zealand jazz circles will also be appearing at the festival including Jennine Bayley, who will be performing a tribute to women in jazz along with Tessa Quayle. Harry Harrison has invited a few special guests along to perform on stage with him at his blues show, while Bob Heinz and Janice Gray will headline a Christchurch jazz icons show. Tickets for the New Zealand International Jazz and Blues Festival in Christchurch are available through Ticketek. For more information visit www.jazzfestivalnz.com.

LAND FORCE
LITTLE RIVER GALLERY w w w. l i t t l e r i v e r g a l l e r y. c o m
Quake expressions: Piece from the Land Force exhibition by Gill Hay.
THE Little River Gallery’s new exhibition Land Force by Gill Hay opens this Saturday and runs until March 14. The exhibition comprises three large works and a series of smaller pieces. The medium used in the art works were charcoal, acrylic, and oil and the work is on unstretched canvas. “The force of what happened last year and the power of the land affected us all. The repercussions pervades life and these paintings are my reaction to the hills that surround my Lyttelton home and the power
they have,” Ms Hay said. “I made a conscious decision to go back to basics and just draw this land using a monochromatic palette. Included is a part of a painting that was damaged and this became my departure point for this show. On a purely practical level, every time I started painting on stretched canvas at my easel, there was another shake and the painting would fall and rip. So I just took pieces of canvas pinning them straight on the walls where they couldn’t fall off and began.”
Wearable flowers return to show What next?: Internationally renowned costume and fabric artist Jenny Gillies has joined forces with Treetech to present A Wonderland of Wearable Flowers at next month’s Ellerslie International Flower Show. Ms Gillies, who wowed crowds at the 2009 show with her Wearable Weeds floral artwear collection, said she was excited about exhibiting in Christchurch for the first time in two years. “For the last three years I have spent a lot of time working on big shows for the Royal Adelaide Show – it will be fantastic to be back showing my works of art in my home town.” Ms Gillies said she hoped visitors would enjoy viewing her 50 garments, which would be displayed in a wonderland of trees. “It will be quite spectacular with the cos-
tumes exhibited in a landscape of trees and shrubs. Visitors will be able to experience the magic of these floral works of art up close.” Photo: Neil Macbeth

Drafty, leaky or jammed? Does your community group need a new garage door? Local manufacturer donates $9,000 worth of garage doors to Canterbury groups in need. CHARITIES, community groups and sports clubs in the Canterbury region will have their storage or parking dilemmas solved if they win one of two fully installed garage doors being donated by local manufacturer B&D Doors. The promotion, a partnership between B&D Doors, Mainland Press, and its new title Selwyn View, gives charities, sports clubs and community groups the chance to win one of two garage door and automatic opener packages. Valued at up to $4500, the prizewinning packages will each be supplied and installed by B&D Doors’ dealerships, Garador and Dominator. Announcing the promotion, B&D Doors New Zealand country manager Tim Dalzell said the company was delighted to be able to give something back to Canterbury. “We know there are community groups still in need – either due to quake damage, or because the charity dollar has been harder to find this past year.”
Groups simply have to put in 250 words why they are most deserving, and submit their entry plus photos to Mainland Press by March 19. Entries will be judged by Mr Dalzell, Selwyn District mayor Kelvin Coe, and Mainland Press special projects manager Gareth Bines. “We’ve been a proud local manufacturer for many years, employing 70 people at our Bromley site,” Mr Dalzell said. “Our factory was hit hard in February 2011 but with everyone pulling together, and great support from suppliers, distributors and customers, we were back into full production within a week and have managed to retain all jobs on site. “It’s an achievement we’re proud of when so many businesses are forced to question their ability to stay in the region.” So, if your group or club is sick of that drafty, leaky or jammed garage door, put pen to paper and send your entry plus photos in to gareth@mainlandpress.co.nz by March 19 and be in to win.

New Alfa Romeo Giulietta sure to please
Fuel economy: The 2012 Alfa Romeo Giulietta’s fuel consumption has been cut, but the car still performs well.
Special package: The Handling Speciale package makes it more responsive to driver inputs.
THE 2012 Alfa Romeo Giulietta, with an advanced TCT twin clutch automatic gearbox and a new turbo diesel engine, has arrived in New Zealand. While maintaining the Giulietta’s spirited performance, its fuel consumption is cut to 4.5 litres/100 km on the combined fuel consumption test. “In a market dominated by self-shifting gearboxes, the fact that we can now offer one of the most advanced units in the market, which offers all the advantages of a self-shifting gearbox with none of the performance or fuel consumption drawbacks, is a very significant change to our market position. “For the growing diesel sector, we can now offer one of the most advanced diesel power units in the world. What remains unchanged, though, are the Alfa Romeo essentials such as the stylish good looks of the Giulietta and the accomplished chassis. And, with a 0 to 100 kmh time of 7.7 seconds for the petrol TCT and 7.9 seconds for the JDTM turbo diesel, both new Giuliettas maintain the performance edge expected of every Alfa Romeo.” Equipped with the next-generation Alfa Romeo TCT twin clutch automatic
transmission, with shift paddles behind the steering wheel, it offers a benchmark in its class in terms of performance, fuel consumption, and emissions. It is available with either the 2010 International Engine of the Year, the 1.4 TB MultiAir 125 kW or the 2.0 JTDM-2 125 kW turbo diesel engine. The 1.4 TB MultiAir 125 kW Giulietta, with the Alfa Romeo TCT transmission, results to a top speed of 218 kmh and 0 to 100 kmh time of 7.7 seconds. Even so, fuel consumption and emissions are extraordinarily low at 5.2 l/100 km over a combined cycle and 121 g/km of CO2. The performance figures recorded in combination with the 2.0 JTDM-2 125 kW diesel engine are also outstanding. Compared to manual, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h drops from 8.0 seconds to 7.9 seconds, combined cycle fuel consumption decreases from 4.7 l/100 km to 4.5 l/100 km, while CO2 emissions are 119 g/km compared to 124 g/km. Given these clear performance gains by the TCT gearbox and New Zealanders’ preference for automatics, it’s no surprise that the manual version of the JTDM-2 will not be available here.
What a beauty: The new Ferrari California leaves a mark with its beauty, performance, and versatility.
Ferrari California to launch at Geneva show THE Geneva Motor Show in March will officialy début a new version of the Ferrari California, which will arrive in Australia and New Zealand by the end of 2012. The new model, called the California ‘Handling Speciale’, includes a 30 kilogram weight reduction and an increase in power output of 30 CV. The Ferrari California’s GDI V8 now delivers 490 horsepower, with maximum torque of 505 Nm at 5000 rpm, thanks to its new exhaust manifolds and engine mapping. The torque curve has also been modified and is higher across the engine’s generous rev range.
Cutting-edge aluminium fabrication techniques and construction technologies used by the Scaglietti Centre of Excellence in the manufacture of the Ferrari California’s chassis, have led to an overall reduction of 30 kg in the car’s weight without impinging in any way on its structural rigidity and performance. These enhancements have improved the Ferrari California’s performance, reducing its 0-100 km/acceleration time to 3.8 seconds. This heightens its sporty feel without detracting from the mission and character of a car that has won universal acclaim for its performance and exceptional versatility,
resulting from its retractable hard top and two-plus seating. To meet the needs of clients desiring a more dynamic, yet not overly extreme driving experience, an optional Handling Speciale package has been developed, which encompasses modifications to the suspension set-up that minimises body roll and makes the car even more responsive to driver inputs. The Handling Speciale package includes magnetorheological dampers controlled by an even faster ECU (-50 per cent response time) running patented Ferrari software. The package also features stiffer springs for a more precise body control combined with

a comfortable ride. Lastly, the California benefits from faster turn-in with smaller steering wheel angles, thanks to a new steering box with a 10 per cent quicker steering ratio. All these new features combine to underscore the California’s sporty prowess without affecting its high performance grand touring vocation, an achievement very much in line with Ferrari’s DNA. In addition, the Ferrari California benefits from the free seven-year standard maintenance programme. The car should be available at the end of 2012 when local prices and specifications will be announced.

Canterbury, your place, your stories
I felt the aftershocks were like a home invasion – you close your curtains and you lock your door when you go to bed at night and they enter into your house without an invite, not a very nice visitor, you’ve got no right of reply, there is no one to moan at, no one to shout at, and this darn thing just comes on in. —Louise Swatton Purau, Canterbury , New Zealand Read the rest of the story at www.QuakeStories.govt.nz/362/story/

Vintage cars put on a top show SPECTATORS at the Ellesmere Raceway were treated to a blast from the past at the second annual Day in the Dirt vintage race car event. The event featured runs by around 50 vehicles including vintage speedway cars, hot rods, and flat track motorcycles. The appearance of several vintage race cars, which had
raced in the 1950s, was a highlight. Event coordinator Trevor Smith said the event had been a great success, with this year’s crowd of around 1000 doubling last year’s turn out. “Everyone seems to have enjoyed it, which was the main thing,” he said. “We will certainly be running a third.”
Where to pass: Silver fern and Canterbury Tactix player Anna Thompson had some pressure applied by Southern Steel player Sheryl Scanlan during the pre-season tournament held at the Lincoln Events Centre recently.
Don Cameron’s stock rod is better known as “the Flinstone car” for obvious reasons. He originally built the car, based on a Sidevalve Ford V8, in the 1960s.
Tactix looks sharp in pre-season games Karen Pasco
Joe Gillman, from Candlelight in Westland, was racing this Ford V8 Coupe regularly at beach racing events in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s at Tahuna Beach in Nelson.
THE Canterbury Tactix netballers showed that they may be a force to be reckoned with this year, as they dominated play in a pre-season tournament at the Lincoln Events Centre recently. The team, which had a disappointing season last year, showed new enthusiasm, vigour, and more structure when it took to the court in the headline game against South Island counterparts, the Southern Steel. The game was well-attended by a supportive, predominantly Canterbury crowd and showed instantly the impact that incoming coach Leigh Gibbs has had on the team. A balanced court presence, with more structured patterns and good ball flow as well as tight defence, were just too good for the opposition, with the Tactix dominating the first and third quarters, losing the second, and drawing the fourth, taking the game 56 goals to 46. The dominance of the Tactix players obviously affected the Steel’s shooting end as Steel co-coach Natalie Avellino told her attacking end to “harden up” during the first quarter spell.
Although the Steel was without experienced players Jodi Brown, Donna Loffhagen, and Wendy Telfer, who has pulled out of the ANZ championship after announcing her pregnancy, the team will still have a lot of work to do if it wants to continue its tradition of being one of the dominant teams of the competition. The Tactix also beat the Canterbury Men’s team 54-51 and won 70-33 against Sydney club side Eastwood Ryde during the weekend’s games. There will still be more work to do for the Tactix, but the new coaching combinations, and obvious hard work already put in is boding well for the championship, which kicks off at the end of March. All ANZ championship teams will get an indication of where they sit as they all head to Tauranga at the beginning of March for the official pre-season tournament. It will be the first time that all teams have met before the start of championship play. Tactix vs. Steel quarter scores: (Tactix first) 1910, 31-25, 44-34, 56-46.
Athletics records take a tumble Peter Leversedge’s 1950s midget car has seen plenty of racing action throughout the decades on grass and beach tracks such as Aranui Speedway and Tahuna Beach.
A 1930s Chevy Coupe driven by Don Bird, of Kaiapoi.
A CLEAR and sunny day was welcomed by all concerned for the annual Lincoln High School Athletics Day. The house spirit was high as students dressed up in their house colours. Two school records were broken and one was equalled on a day that featured many outstanding and strong performances and some intense competition. Rowan Brailsford broke the senior boys’ javelin record that has stood since 1970, with an outstanding throw of 52.45m, exceeding the record by over one and half metres. Brianna McNeish broke the under 14 girls’ long jump record with a fine jump of 4.34m, while Annabel Cleland equalled the intermediate girls’ 200m record with a time of 27:40. The top performing students will now represent Lincoln High School at the Canterbury Secondary Athletics Championships, which will be held in midMarch.

Fitzsimon now reigning supreme as top jumper
Kerr makes it to five out of five
ROLLESTON’S Tegan Fitzsimon and Alacazam MH proved their class with a convincing win in the Giltrap Audi Mitavite Young Rider competition at the South Island Show Jumping Championships in Christchurch on Saturday. First to go in the 12-strong field, Fitzsimon made the tough Kevin Hansen-designed track look easy, guiding her starry black 12-year-old gelding Alacazam MH to a footperfect clear round. Current leading South Island combination on points, Christchurch’s Stacey Anderson on Saddlery Barn and Cruiser were the only other combination to go clear,
forcing a jump-off against the clock. In the jump-off, Fitzsimon was again faultless, going clear in a time of 50.5. Anderson opted to retire after a rail down at the second fence, content with second, handing the win to Fitzsimon. Kaiapoi’s Katie Meredith and Streetwise finished third of the four faulters after taking a rail at the first of the treble, with Dunedin’s Brittany Whelan and George Jetson fourth. It was a welcome return for Fitzsimon and Alacazam MH to the NEC McLean’s Island, having not competed there for the past three seasons.
“He felt really good today,” said Fitzsimon, thrilled to notch up her biggest young rider victory of the season. She has been in almost unbeatable form in the Cathay Pacific One Star Grand Prix, with six wins from seven starts to date and will now head to the coveted Horse of the Year Show in Hastings next month with confidence. The result of the championship is as follows: Tegan Fitzsimon (Rolleston) Alacazam MH 1, Stacey Anderson (Christchurch) Saddlery Barn Cruiser 2, Katie Meredith (Kaiapoi) Streetwise 3.
Setting records: David Kerr won an unprecedented fifth straight South Island Championship.
Tom Doudney
SOUTHBRIDGE Midget car driver David Kerr claimed a record fifth straight South Island Championship in the 50th running of the event in Nelson earlier this month. No-one else has won more than three titles in a row and circumstances didn’t make it easy for Kerr to extend his record setting run. A tangle up in the first lap left him without brakes for the rest of the race and his fuel tank was so dry by the end that he couldn’t even make it into the pit stop. Kerr, a member of Ellesmere Raceway and Ruapuna Raceway,
said he was very happy to have extended his winning streak. “It is something that has never been done before, so it just put the icing on the cake.” Kerr won the first heat, came in third in the second, and won the third and final heat after a daring manoeuvre to pass his main competition, Nelson’s Nick Marquet, on the ninth lap. His 28 points were just enough to clinch the trophy, two ahead of Marquet. Kerr said he was confident he’d be back next year to defend the title and try to make it six in a row.
Up and over: Tegan Fitzsimon on her 12-year-old gelding Alcazam MH.
