A VERY SPECIAL 22 YEAR OLD BOND The Dreaver family are one special cat loving family who have always wanted the very best of care,professional advice and service for their very aged, but spritely,cool cat “Garfield”. Once you meet Garfield, you never forget him. It would be true to say that we at McMaster & Heap Vets aren’t his favourite people.

I guess most of his visits involve needle jabs so at 22 years of age he lets us know, loud and clear, he’s not pleased with what we are doing. We still enjoy seeing Garfield though and I take enormous pride in the fact that we, along with Ann and family and good feline genes, have contributed to Garfield living the long, good quality, happy life he so enjoys. Not many of our patients reach the early 20’s and honestly Garfield doesn’t appear to be slowing up at all mentally, although physically he enjoys more sleeps in his favourite places in the sun.

Garfield is a ginger DSH moggy cat who has been a patient of ours for a very long time.

Despite his age, he isn’t disease free and is battling hepatitis, he has a heart murmur and copes with generalized arthritis, not that you’d know it to look at him. His very supportive, loving family daily medicate Garfield with a variety of tablets to help support his heart, kidneys and liver function. He isn’t the easiest cat to pill and even at 22 years of age, if he doesn’t want something done he digs his toes in and gets his way ( for the time being anyway). Ann has to be a clever detective at disguising medications in different varieties of food. He also gets the best of foods and Ann changes tastes often so he doesn’t get bored. Ann also religiously books Garfield in every fortnight with one of our nurses to give him a long acting antibiotic injection, subcutaneous fluids and a shot of Vitamin B. These injections can sting but Garfield mans up and I think almost knows they help him, although at the time he voices his dislike of the needles with a hiss and growl.

Recently Garfield was booked into see me and I needed to lightly sedate him with anaesthetic gas to fully examine him. Again for 22 years of age he physically looked fantastic with a normal temperature, heart rate, a good body weight of 4.5kg and no lumps or bumps to be found. The only abnormality was tartar on most of his teeth and evidence of gingivitis and ulcers, which can be successfully treated with a thorough dental scale and polish under anaeasthesia. I discussed the pros and cons of this procedure with Ann as Garfield is no spring chicken, and as his recent blood tests showed, all his liver enzymes are still elevated. Based on how great he is clinically and the fact that improving dental hygiene will definitely help his internal organs therefore extending his life, we have together decided to go ahead with a dental procedure. This means another outing and short stay at the vets for Garfield but I’m sure he’ll thank us later for his sweet smelling breath and clean teeth and gums!!

A special thanks to Ann and family for allowing us the priviledge of being Garfields vets and carers. He’s one exceptional cat.

BISHOPDALE resident Blair Newton has spent the past two weeks sewing and glueing sequins on his Elvis costume for the Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari.

His pink scooter now has a guitar stuck to the back of it with a car radio inside, which will be blasting Elvis Presley’s 30 numberone hits during the estimated seven-hour ride from Christchurch to Hokitika.

The activity was a permitted use in an industrial zone and complied with the council’s city plan. Environment Canterbury also granted a non-notified discharge to air consent.

Mr Guthrey has approval to cremate five bodies a day and 1200 a year. His company has a 12-year lease on its site.

Late last year the Spreydon Heathcote Community Board wrote to Health Minister Tony Ryall asking him to close

the crematorium through his powers in the Burials and Cremations Act 1964. Mr Ryall replied the Resource Management Act took precedence over this act and Mr Guthrey’s business met the requirements of that act.

A petition opposing the crematorium was presented to the council in February. Petition organiser Jan Veronese, who owns property near the crematorium with her husband, said 366 people who worked and lived near the crematorium signed the petition.

Mrs Veronese said as part of the Sydenham rebuild plan, apartments were planned almost opposite the crematorium.

“It (the crematorium) should be moved to the country,” she said.

Graffiti-covered New Brighton Mall in need of upgrade Gina McKenzie

DILAPIDATED graffiti-covered shops along New Brighton Mall are concerning residents and businesses who say urgent action is required to upgrade the area.

The rebuild and recovery of New Brighton Mall was approved as part of a Christchurch City Council Master Plan last month.

New Brighton Business Association member and shop owner Nikki Griffin said while she supported a council plan for the mall, she wanted to see increased public input.

“People need to take control and stop the graffiti. We’re the ones who let this happen and it’s up to us to take pride in New Brighton and make it more attractive.

“We need to have shops that residents want and a point of difference to make the area stand out.”

Mrs Griffin said shops in the seaside suburb needed to identify holes in the market and fill them.

“The other day, for example, I wanted to buy some socks and I would have bought them locally but there’s nowhere to buy socks in New Brighton.”

Mrs Griffin believed businesses could succeed in New Brighton if they took a chance.

“When we came here with our business a few years ago we didn’t know how it would

go but we’ve done well because the local community has supported us.”

Café manager and local resident Paul Zaanen said it was vital to clean up the mall to encourage investment in the area.

“We need economic investment in the mall.

“There’s been a lack of action and all these empty rundown shops give the mall the wrong image.

“We need to get the area humming again and create something unique that will draw people in from all over the city.”

Mr Zaanen believed the revived mall must offer a sense of culture that tied in with the artistic nature of the suburb.

“We could create a new arts centre mixed in with cafes and festivals.

“There’s so much potential here but we need to take action now before it gets more run down.”

Burwood-Pegasus ward councillor Peter Beck said the council must listen to the needs of the New Brighton community.

“It’s pretty rundown and this plan gives us a chance to develop a shopping area with a distinctive edge.

“We need to focus on what the community wants to see happen.”

Some welcome winter distraction The days are drawing in apace and we’re crunching around on the last of autumn’s leaves. This means, unfortunately, the season which only skiers and others with similar interests look forward to is almost upon us: Winter.

During the chilly months ahead distractions to get us into the scented charm of spring are welcome. Wimbledon on television is one. As we freeze and shiver, even the atypical pale English summer looks extraordinarily appealing.

This year we will have an added distraction to help us through winter – the Olympic Games, which will also be in London.

The last time the Olympics were held in London was way back in 1948 shortly after the end of the Second World War. A Dutch housewife and mother, Fanny BlankersKoen, was one of the biggest stars of those games which were much smaller than the giant extravaganza into which they have since morphed.

Just over 4000 athletes competed in the 1948 games, nicknamed the Austerity Games, given the hardships endured in the immediate

post-war period.

This year there will be 10,400 athletes in London where, it is expected, New Zealand should happily haul in a sizeable number of medals from our rowers, cyclists, and others.

Sometimes you have to wonder, though, how some of the sports get included.

The Olympics are supposed to be the pinnacle but this year again we will have, notably with football or soccer, virtual second-leaguers competing.

And in 2016, rugby is set to return to the Olympics at Rio de Janeiro with a sevens competition. The sport was last in the Olympics in 1924 when it was a 15-a-side competition.

In time, what will end up being considered more prestigious – an Olympic gold medal in rugby sevens or a medal for being in a Rugby World Cup winning XV? And one other sport will make its debut at Rio de Janiero. Golf.

Does it really belong at the Olympic Games which, let’s face it, began as a revival of ancient Greek games, most particularly athletics?

Trust accused of ‘rolling over’ Chris Tobin

CHRISTCHURCH Civic Trust chairman Mr Roberts has accused the NZ Historic Places Trust of “rolling over” in many instances regarding heritage retention in the city, which the trust denies.

“They’re a captured group and part of a government department,” Mr Roberts said.

They’ve abolished all their regional branches and no longer see themselves as proactive.

They just manage properties. They’re not going to work against the people who employ them.”

Spokesperson for the Historic Places Trust Jamie Douglas said the trust had worked directly with authorities and owners since the September 4, 2010, earthquake.

“Generally those who haven’t had much to do with our work, or who haven’t talked to us directly about our involvement, are the ones who are most critical.

“However, their opinion changes when they understand just how much we’ve achieved in this time. We have provided many hundreds of heritage assessments with engineering advice during this time to the Government, local authorities and owners, all with the aim of retaining the region’s heritage.”

FORMER Christchurch Convention Centre manager Mike Kelly does not favour a return to either the original Kilmore Street site, or the Crowne Plaza site.

Mr Kelly, who is originally from Canada, managed the centre from 1997 – 2005 and then ran convention centres in China, Puerto Rico and Thailand.

“Both sites wouldn’t have enough space for a larger centre and the Kilmore St site is selflimiting as it is landlocked and doesn’t have good street access.”

Mr Kelly supported the Christchurch City Council’s preferred option of a 21,000 square metre facility on a new central city site but warned that accommodation was a key issue.

“There must be four-star accommodation within walking distance and if they go for the larger option that means triple the number of rooms previously available.

“Wherever these hotels are built will dictate where the new convention centre should be built.”

New state homes for Christchurch HOUSING New Zealand is to start a series of small redevelopments in Christchurch that are expected to result in 200 to 350 new homes being built in the next 18 months.

General manager of assets redevelopment Sean Bignell said the extra houses would assist in replenishing Housing New Zealand’s depleted stock, help meet future housing demand and make better use of existing properties.

“The work is a precursor to larger scale redevelopment plans which rely on settlement of Housing New Zealand’s insurance claims and a range of technical issues and challenges,” he said.

A total of 94 Housing New Zealand sites have so far been identified for minor redevelopment. Options include subdividing

land under allowable zoning, moving or demolishing some houses to allow for better land use and replacing badly earthquakedamaged houses with new homes.

“The work programme will involve smallscale redevelopment projects of generally one to 10 new dwellings per site in a variety of suburbs across the city,” Mr Bignell said.

At present, Housing New Zealand has 6127 houses in Christchurch, 95 per cent of which have been damaged by the earthquakes. This damage ranges from minor repairs to houses that are structurally unsound.

“After a while you do plateau and that’s when it gets tough. You have to change up your routine and constantly challenge yourself.”

Another mistake many people made when trying to lose weight was over-analysing small details, she said.

“There’s no point over-thinking everything.

Less talk and more action is what’s really needed.”

Now that her target weight has been achieved, Ms Ieremia has a new challenge: running the New York marathon in November.

“I’ve entered the race and booked my flights so now I just have to get into the training.

I’m really looking forward to completing the marathon as I love new challenges and always set myself something to achieve each year.”

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says it is important that residents provide feedback to the Council before a final plan for the year ahead is adopted at the end of June.

“With a distance earthquake we would get 12 to 15 hours notice and there are evacuation plans in place.”

“It will be a comfort for Christchurch’s coastal community after many months of anxiety with ongoing earthquakes and aftershocks that there will soon be a warning system in place to help protect them and their families in the event of a tsunami.”

He says the warning system is just part of the solution to keep residents safe.

“Residents also need to be proactive in having a self evacuation plan for their family and to know the closest safe area to them.”

Mr Parker says a locally generated tsunami is likely to be a small event, with a one to two-metre wave, but a distant tsunami generated from

Sites for the installation of additional sirens have been identified inland from the immediate coastal area and on Banks Peninsula. Funding for these two further stages will be considered in 2013 as part of the Council’s Long Term Plan 2013-22.

Coastal Christchurch’s tsunami siren warning system will be tested for the first time on Sunday 22 July at 11am for about one minute. This will enable residents to identify the sound of the sirens.

Further testing will be at 11am on the Sundays Daylight Saving starts and ends.

“The earthquakes have had a massive impact on our city and there are some major decisions to be made this year. Putting together this draft plan has been challenging and I am confident we have put forward a sound plan that, despite the enormity of the task before us, is able to meet the costs of the rebuild,” Mayor Parker says.

“The best thing we can do now is listen. I urge our residents to look at this draft set of accounts and write to us with their thoughts.

The Council is asking people who make written submissions to consider joining with others if they wish to speak at public hearings.

With just four days set down for the hearings, it is expected to be a lengthy process and it will be made more manageable if those with likeminded submissions come together and nominate a spokesperson.

Science rapper to visit city AWARD-winning Stanford (USA) science rapper and biologist, Tom McFadden, aka The Rhymebosome, will visit Christchurch as part of a national tour.

Mr McFadden will return to this year’s eighth New Zealand International Science Festival in Dunedin after performing at the same festival in 2010.

As part of the festival’s Science Idol competition, Mr McFadden will be visiting and performing his raps, which communicate scientific concepts, at schools with a New Zealand tour in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin later this month. He will be in Christchurch on May 28 and 29.

International cookbook raising funds for city A NEW cookbook has been launched to raise funds for the Christchurch rebuild.

Orphans Aid International chief executive and founder Sue van Schreven started the project at the 2011 Paris Cookbook Fair where she told chefs about the earthquakes in New Zealand.

“The February 22 earthquake hit just as I was leaving New Zealand. I was invited to showcase our first cookbook at the Paris Cookbook Fair while on my way to visit our orphanage workers in Europe.”

“I told them all about New Zealand and they freely gave their recipes. They were all very receptive.”

The Paris Cookbook Fair Chefs Charity Cookbook features more than 30 recipes by international celebrity chefs including Chef Wan, Chef Ramzi, Bob Blumer, Rose Elliot and Chakall. Kiwi chefs Julie Biuso and Robert Oliver also feature.

Net proceeds of all book sales will go towards Orphans Aid International’s Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund, which has already raised $20,000 in donations.

INSTINCT

An exhibition by Jacqui Gibbs Chamberlain On a recent trip to Asia for my fathers birthday, I was surprised by my personal reactions to the masses of people who surrounded us. Constant movement, pressure, noise and smell.

We as human beings are always competing against one another, for food, shelther and survival, and like the animal kingdom are in the race for survival of the fittest, living on our instinct.

This was highlighted on my return home, confronted by the power of mother nature in her deliverance of the earthquakes.

I couldn’t paint, just surviving, living on instinct, always on edge. When I did start to paint again I realised I was expressing that same instinct of survival, living on the same high level of adrenalin.

Why did I paint animals?

Animals live on adrenalin and instinct every day of their lives – predated by others, surviving through the sometimes cruel seasons of Mother nature.

I have created many overlapping ideas and images about instinct through the use and vibrancy of colour and movement and texture of the paint.

Insurance clusters empower residents Tom Doudney

Fish release numbers increase at Groynes FISH & Game have released over 4000 salmon into the Groynes fishing lakes since October last year.

Fish & Game hatchery manager Dirk Barr said this was significantly more than they have ever released into the lakes before.

The lakes had been ‘buzzing’ with junior anglers and their families this season. Last week, Mr Barr released 300 more salmon into the lakes – the last until October.

The releases have occurred roughly every two to three weeks since October. Previously, Fish & Game have only released salmon into the lakes for the Take A Kid Fishing Event and when there had been surpluses from commercial hatcheries, such as the Silverstream Hatchery near Kaiapoi.

The fish are hatched at the Fish & Game Montrose hatchery in the Upper Rakaia, where the cold, low-nutrient water provides the perfect hatching conditions. After six months, they are transferred down to raceways on a property owned by the Isaac Wildlife Trust at McLeans Island Road.

Here, Fish & Game on-grow the salmon for a further six months before releasing them into the lakes. By the time they are released they are up to 1.5kg.

Mr Barr said that while some would be ‘catch and release’, most were taken home for supper.

The lakes are only open to junior anglers (17 and under as of October 1).

FOR frustrated Christchurch homeowners struggling with insurance issues, grouping together in ‘insurance clusters’ could be a game changer, an advocate has suggested.

Insurance clusters, where residents who live in the same area and who are covered by the same insurance company band together in dealing with their insurers, have sprung up in Ferrymead-Brookhaven and Mt Pleasant in the last few months.

An umbrella organisation covering the area from Ferrymead to Sumner, called the Coastal Hills Cluster, has also been formed.

Ferrymead-Brookhaven Residents Association chairman David Stringer, who

initiated the concept, said although it was in its early stages, the idea was already a great success and would eventually help weed out the good insurers from the bad.

“What we wanted to do was provide a vehicle for residents to be able to share information, because people are very hungry for information, and to understand to get a handle on the process they’re in,” he said.

“It became apparent to me that people can be insured by the same insurance company but be at totally different stages of the whole insurance continuum, and they can be at those stages through misinformation or lack of information, lack of advocacy and feeling

totally overwhelmed by the process.”

Mr Stringer said that while some insurance companies were doing a very good job of working with their clients, others were doing an appalling job. Insurance clusters would enable clients to compare performance and build a picture of who the good and bad insurers were.

He had spoken to representatives from residents associations in St Albans and Parklands who were interested in forming their own insurance clusters.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee and Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson have both expressed their support for the concept.

Charity ride will help Lachie Tom Doudney

CHRIS Sutherland knows that riding a scooter from Christchurch to Hokitika for a cancer fundraiser might be a tough slog but says it’s nothing compared to what his fouryear-old son Lachie, a cancer patient, is going through.

The Huntsbury resident is among 250 entrants set to take part in the Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari, a journey of over 250km, on May 26 to raise funds for the New Zealand Cancer Society.

Lachie was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer in January and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Mr Sutherland said life had been a rollercoaster for Lachie, himself and wife Kelly over the past few months but they had received a lot of support. Taking part in the Scooter Safari was a way of staying positive and giving something back for the help that they had received.

“When you’re in the actual period when he’s having chemotherapy, you’re quite focused on that and in some ways you’re less focused on the end result, but then there comes a time when you have some tests and the results can be good, bad or otherwise,” Mr Sutherland said.

Public hearings on rebuild plans dropped Samantha Early and Tom Doudney

PUBLIC hearings will not be held on the draft Sydenham Master Plan, to the disappointment of some submitters; however, workshops may take place to address issues with the draft Selwyn St Shops Master Plan.

The Spreydon Heathcote Community Board decided unanimously not to ask the Christchurch City Council to hold hearings on the Sydenham plan, but that it would ask council staff to write to the 17 of 43 people and groups who submitted and wished to make a verbal comment.

Board chairman Phil Clearwater said there had already been delays with the plan and there was very little opposition to any of it.

“On some of the areas where there does need to be more debate, for example transport and cycle ways, there will be every opportunity for people to be involved.”

He said holding hearings could have taken weeks and they wanted to fast-track the process.

“We join the business owners in wanting the plan to be actually developed and implemented as soon as possible.”

However, the board had decided on a different approach with the Selwyn St Shops plan due to concerns raised by several submitters around elements of the plan relating to transport.

Mr Clearwater said the board had recommended to council that workshops be held with submitters, a process which was intended to work through concerns while still being quicker than public hearings.

The council is yet to discuss that proposal.

Maureen Vance of the Adult Reading Assistance Scheme said she wanted to speak at the Sydenham hearing to represent the 20 percent of Christchurch people who couldn’t read or write well enough to contribute to the plan.

“How can they have a say? That’s what I was going to bring.”

A NEW branch of the ASB Bank opened in the newly expanded Barrington Mall last week.

ASB’s general manager of branch banking Grant Gilbert said the new Barrington branch brought the total number in and around Christchurch to eight, with a further branch in Rangiora due to open in July.

The branch in Barrington mall replaced a temporary port-a-com bank which ASB had set up in the car park.

ASB’s Regional Centre is also moving back into the central city after its previous premises were badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.

The new centre at 518 Colombo Street will bring staff back under one roof after they had been operating out of the bank’s Hornby and Riccarton premises.

The move is taking place in two stages, with 40 staff having already been relocated and the remaining 30 moving across in June.

To mark the opening, a community fun day was held at the new Barrington branch on Saturday.

Long-time Sydenham business owner David Harman of Harman Motors, who also asked to speak to his submission, was disappointed at not being heard.

Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson, who asked to speak about her written submissions on Sydenham and Lyttelton plans, said it did not bode well that the city’s two pilot projects had been so delayed that submission hearings had to be cut.

“I trust that the community board and councillors have read all the submissions and that they alter the plan as appropriate,” she said.

Sockburn market to return Tom Doudney

A SOCKBURN craft market, which had a short but successful run, will get a second life next month.

The Garden City Market was closed by its previous operator in March after only three months of operation, to the surprise and disappointment of many stallholders.

Now Judy Harrington and one other former stallholder Ginny Hoepf, are resurrecting the market, which is set to open again on June 2.

Mrs Harrington said it had been discouraging when the market closed.

“There were about 70 stalls and it was really picking up and

everything was going fine and then all of a sudden it just wasn’t there anymore.”

The market had helped provide a place for stallholders who were displaced from other locations after the earthquake or who did not want to be part of Riccarton Market.

“When the earthquakes happened and we lost the Art Centre, that was a big body of local art and craft people who have just got nowhere to go, so the idea was to get something substantial back into the community to give us a connection.”

It was hoped that an office building on the site could be rented to help cover costs.

Artworks were donated by artists from around the country and the children chose a work to take home.

AS sea cadets, Christ’s College students James Keleghan and Miles McMillan are used to a bit of adventure, but travelling to London to take part in Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee celebrations is likely to trump previous excursions.

James, a 16-year-old Riccarton resident, and Miles, also 16, from Halswell, will be the only two Christchurch representatives among a New Zealand Maritime Youth Organisation’s crew of around 12 members to be part of an international 1000-boat pageant on the Thames on June 3.

The pageant is one of the key events scheduled to mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne, the second-longest reign of any British monarch.

The four sea cadets and around eight or nine young mariners will row down the Thames behind the Queen’s barge and also take part in several parades on land.

James, who moved from England to Christchurch with his parents five years ago, said he was excited about taking part.

“It’s really important for me coming from England and my parents were in the military, which has added an extra special kind of factor to it.”

For him, the two-week time frame of the trip will also provide an opportunity to catch up with family members he has not seen since leaving the country.

Miles, a sea cadet for more than three years, was looking forward to the occasion.

“It’s really exciting, such a big opportunity doesn’t come around very often,” he said.

“Being able to be part of it is pretty special.”

Young runner Work begins on new police raises $23,000 station in Antigua Street for St John Thirty-five days and 31 marathons later, 23-year-old Spreydon resident Mathew Broad crossed the finish line of his North 2 South Charity Challenge, raising money for St John last Friday.

Mr Broad started his run in Cape Reinga on March 31 and finished 2298 kilometres later in Bluff.

Continuing the legacy left by his late grandfather Russell Hodges, and the work he did as an officer and regional chairman of St John, Mr Board has raised an impressive $23,000 for the charity.

“Like my grandad, I’m passionate about St John and feel a tremendous sense of self-achievement having completed this challenge.

He’d be really proud.”

The money raised will be used to support the charitable work of St John including the ambulance service, community initiatives such as free transport to medical appointments for those who need it and the friendship telephone service, Caring Caller.

News in brief MMP hearings in Christchurch today

THE second and final day of public hearings on the MMP review are being held at the Air Force Museum Theatre in Wigram today, starting at 9.15am and running until 5pm.

Members of the public are welcome to attend, although submissions will only be heard from those already scheduled to appear.

Chief electoral officer Robert Peden said the hearings were a good opportunity to hear the opinions of others,

particularly for those still undecided.

“Written submissions are welcome until the end of May, so there is still plenty of time to make your submission,” he said.

Choir to raise funds for St John DESPITE the challenge of earthquakes over the past 19 months, the Christchurch Liedertafel Male Voice Choir has continued to operate in the city, and this month is giving a special performance to raise funds for St John.

They will be performing at St Andrew’s 700-seat Rangi Ruru Presbyterian Church on May 20 from 2.15pm. The 45-member choir will be joined by special guests English organist Edward Picton-Turbervill and soprano Jeni McKinnon.

Titled ‘Partners in Music’, the concert will include a range of traditional and modern songs, from opera favourites and spirituals to

original arrangements from three of Christchurch’s leading composers Features will be compositions by Martin Setchell and Richard Oswin, plus Phillip Norman’s setting of AK Grant’s poem Love Song, together with sacred music and songs ranging from Vive l’Amour and Unchained Melody to The Day the Pub Burned Down.

Money raised from the event will be donated to St John.

The loss of so many major venues has been devastating for the performing arts community, said choir president Graeme Downie, particularly any which required quality organ accompaniment.

“In the past, the Christchurch Liedertafel has performed in locations such as ChristChurch Cathedral, Durham Street Methodist, Knox Church, St Mark’s Opawa, the Salvation Army Citadel and the Christchurch Town Hall.”

St John spokesperson Christine Prince thanked the members of the choir for their support of St John.

“The Christchurch Liedertafel Male Voice Choir has performed at so many venues that were badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. We’re thrilled that they are carrying on with their performing and especially that they’ve chosen to fundraise for us at this special concert.”

Margolyes hosting Theatre Royal fundraiser tomorrow night ACTRESS Miriam Margolyes will host a “very intimate” literary liaison, with all proceeds going towards the rebuild and restoration of the Isaac Theatre Royal, tomorrow.

Margolyes, who is in New Zealand this month with her onewoman show Dickens’ Women said she felt incredibly sad when she heard about the theatre and wanted to do something to help.

“I am thrilled to have the chance to help the Theatre Royal in some way.

CLASSICAL crossover singer Rebecca Nelson, 24, has run off more of her CD, Pure Imagination, after selling out earlier this month.

Nelson said she was thrilled that her CD was doing so well, particularly as it’s self-funded.

One door opens as another closes During last week, two of our highest-profile Kiwi sportsmen made major decisions that will have a huge impact on their lives.

Former All Black and long-term All Black coaching guru Wayne Smith decided that the colour black was more powerful than white.

Over last Christmas, I was in Wayne and his wife Trish’s company. At that time they were both looking forward to heading over to the UK to be involved with the English Rugby Union’s management team. Wayne had a strong desire to further his coaching career with an international team and assist in a hands-on role.

Why wouldn’t he? Let’s face it. Smith is very good in that role after 10 years with the men in black and the money on offer was mouth-watering. Why then last week did he do a U-turn?

Basically, he just could not bring himself to coach a team to beat his beloved All Blacks, and probably the white rose of England were the ones he didn’t want to see inflict a loss on those representing his country.

He is living proof that you can’t put a price on loyalty, and for my money I applaud Wayne’s decision.

The second of New Zealand’s favourite sons, cricketer John Wright, was completely shafted by the board of New Zealand Cricket. Wright is a guy straight out of a Boy’s Own annual.

Not the greatest player ever and not your modern style of coach, but boy, the public of New Zealand warmed to this bloke in both roles.

I know for a fact that from John’s point of view, the marriage between the bus driver (Shane Warne’s description of him) John Buchanan and the lawn bowler Kim Littlejohn was not one made in heaven.

In the end, the board must have worked out it was going to be cheaper to dump Wright than pay out the big money to the other two who had only just started their four-year contracts.

That, to me, is a short-sighted, gutless decision and may well bite them on their bums.

The NZRFU found out to their huge cost a few years ago that if poor decisions lead to your sport losing its fan base then you are in deep trouble.

Kiwis have always believed that a true Kiwi bloke deserves a fair go and now the actions of NZC’s board may well find that what they have done to Wright just does not sit well with cricket fans across the nation, and believe me they will show their displeasure at the turnstiles.

I know that when I have had a chat with Wright, he believes practical, uncomplicated messages work better on Kiwi sports people than theory and cluttered psychology, which these two Aussies want to ram down the players’ throats.

SMOKE billowing from a controversial Sydenham crematorium over nearby businesses last week, including a café, has been called disrespectful and wrong and has seen renewed calls for it to be relocated.

Last Wednesday, the Hawdon Street crematorium operated by John Guthrey experienced difficulties cremating a 230kilogram body. A strong odour and smoke covered the area, which disgusted nearby business owners Rod Stuart and Ahmad Hosseini.

Mr Stuart operates Tropicool in Buchan St and has vigorously opposed the crematorium ever since it opened four months ago.

“It’s a disrespectful place to do it; this is

a densely populated area. The crematorium should be in a pleasant area out in a paddock or with gardens around.”

Mr Stuart said the whole operation seemed wrong; from what he had seen, bodies were brought to the crematorium in an unmarked van and to him it all appeared disrespectful and inappropriate.

Owner of a café approximately 20 metres from the crematorium, Ahmad Hosseini said he wanted Mr Guthrey to shut down his business and move.

“The business is not right for this area; it looks to me as if he’s a good guy but the business is terrible.”

The crematorium owner, John Guthrey,

said the business was in an industrial zone and he could not understand the fuss over his operation since three other cremators operated in the city, some in residential areas.

“We’re in an industrial zone; all around the country there are cremators in industrial zones, some in the main streets of towns and cities,” Mr Guthrey said.

“There’s a cremator at Harewood surrounded by new homes; there’s a cremator at Linwood surrounded by houses. They’ve been operating for many years and there’s another one at Wigram in an industrial area.”

AN ENTIRE generation of some eastern suburbs children risk never learning to swim if North New Brighton’s school pool isn’t repaired, according to the school.

The 72-year-old pool, which was used by community groups as well as the school, suffered damage in last year’s earthquakes and the school needs to raise $70,000 for repair costs.

Save North New Brighton Pool coordinator Andrea Girvin said the 20metre pool must be repaired to ensure children in the seaside suburb could learn basic swimming skills.

“With QEII gone, it’s really difficult for kids to get to a pool.

“We’re right on the ocean so I worry that kids could get in trouble at the beach if they don’t learn to swim.

“We’re not a wealthy area and a lot of parents can’t afford to get their kids across town to a pool.

“Even if parents can afford swimming lessons, there are very few spaces available now due to the shortage of pools.”

North New Brighton student Eli Matoe, 12, had missed his daily visits to the pool during the summer.

“I didn’t swim this year because we couldn’t use it so I hope it gets fixed for next summer.”

Six-year-old Ciaran Stewart was also a frequent visitor to the pool.

“I went there all the time and I am really sad now because it is broken.”

Board of Trustees chairperson Linda Boyce said a month of swimming classes had been held at AquaGym earlier in the

year but the time students spent in the water was severely limited.

“By the time we arrived the students only had 30 minutes in the pool, which isn’t enough time to learn to swim.”

Ms Boyce said $11,000 had already been raised and she hoped everyone would support the fundraising drive.

“We plan to line it with a vinyl or butynol liner to allow for further movement.

“Fixing the pool will give something positive back to the community and give the kids a chance to smile again.”

Journey begins

NEW Zealand’s education system has been described as “impressive” by a group of 10 international students who are visiting schools around the world as part of a research project.

The group aged between 17 and 23 is investigating personalised learning at schools in Scotland, Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, America, Australia and South Africa as part of an annual project called The Learning School.

Coordinator Daryl Regan said the students had investigated a number of personalised learning concepts at Shirley Boys’ High School over the last month.

“We were impressed by the mentoring

programme for Pacific Island students and also by the house system as this has faded away in the United Kingdom.

Ms Regan said the friendly attitude of New Zealanders had also been a highlight for the students.

“Everyone is so welcoming, laidback and kind and there is so much natural beauty here.

“A lot of the students have commented to me that New Zealand is the favourite country they have visited on this trip.”

The group left for Australia last week and will present their research findings at a global education conference in Cape Town in July.

Lady Isaac named as river park patron LADY Isaac has been named as the patron of Avon-Otakaro Network (AvON), a group campaigning for a reserve and river park in the Avon River red zone.

Lady Isaac said she accepted the invitation to become the group’s patron because the project was closely aligned with her own conservation interests.

With her late husband Neil, Lady Isaac founded and built the Isaac Construction Co Ltd and created the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust, which manages Peacock Springs Wildlife Park.

Lady Isaac was influential in creating the Isaac Lakes in the Clearwater development and was behind the restoration of the Isaac Theatre Royal.

Global travel inspires New Brighton artist Gina McKenzie

A SIX-month journey of Quebec, Sweden, Germany, Austria and Singapore has provided North New Brighton artist Anne Visser with plenty of inspiration for her upcoming solo exhibition at Selwyn Art Gallery.

“My sketchbooks were bursting full of images and words connected to daily life in those places,” she said.

“Even ordinary everyday events come to life when you are in a different country.

“It’s all about trying new foods, having new experiences and seeing things while sitting at cafes and watching life go by.”

Ms Visser said the theme of her exhibition entitled Land and see –discover the unexpected focused on exploring the concept of travel in an abstract style.

“I would consider myself as a contemporary artist with an abstract twist. There are always hidden meanings within my work and this series of artwork has plenty of colour and layers of meaning and depth.

ST Martins sea cadet Reuben McCartney, 19, won the 2012 Belfast/Kaiapoi Rotary Club’s Young Totara Award earlier this month for his contribution to the community.

The award has been presented since 2002 to a young person who provided a sound role model for youth and showed good leadership.

Reuben was presented with an award certificate, pin and

a totara tree which he planted in the Styx Mill Reserve last week.

During his five years with the Sea Cadet Force at TS Steadfast, Reuben was crowned best national cadet and represented New Zealand in a joint international sea cadet exercise held in Singapore last year.

Reuben is currently applying for a position with the Royal New Zealand Navy.

Alcohol ban to become permanent THE Christchurch City Council is considering making temporary alcohol bans in Merivale and Papanui permanent.

Council programme manager Alan Bywater said the amendment to the 2009 Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw would help address increased violence and disorder in Merivale and Papanui resulting from people drinking in public places.

“The temporary bans appear to have been effective and it is going to be some time before the current patterns of drinking and entertainment areas change, hence the need for permanent bans,” he said.

Drinking and entertainment areas in Merivale and Papanui had become popular following

the February 22 earthquake and the subsequent closure of clubs and bars in the central business district.

A temporary ban has been in place since August and will remain in place until September 9.

“The Council is very interested in hearing from people as to whether the temporary alcohol bans have been useful or not, and whether they think the proposed bans cover the right locations, days and times,” Mr Bywater said.

The bans apply from 6pm to 6am on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Written submissions on the amendment to the Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw can be made until June 6.

Papanui Bowls’ double celebration The Papanui Club men’s and women’s outdoor bowls teams have created club history by both winning the Champion of Champion Bowls Canterbury triples titles for the 2011/12 season.

Club secretary Bev Bilbrough said it was the first time in the club’s history that both the men and women’s teams had won the champion titles and it was the first win the players had had bowling together.

Bep Weir, Pat Esplin and Mary Harrington beat South Brighton 17-12 to take out the women’s

title while Kelvin Scott, Terry Stewart and Mike Rees won a “nail biter” final against Belfast.

“With the result being tied at 16-all after the mandatory 18 ends, an extra end was required and Papanui came out the winners 18-16,” Mrs Bilbrough said.

The day of the finals was also the club’s trophy presentation and end of season function, so the double win was the perfect end to the season.

“We just had great joy and excitement about the win. We had great celebrations when the players returned,” she said.

Choir sings from the heart Tania Butterfield

“LOOK what they’ve done to my song, Ma,” about 30 members of the St Albans chapter of the Rockers of Ages choir sing.

“Look what they’ve done to my brain…I feel I’m half insane.”

It’s not the sort of lyrics you would expect a choir made up of “older” people to be singing but it is clear by the look on their faces and the passion in their voices that they love it.

The Melanie Safka song is the first song choir member Josephine Head has recognised since joining the choir last year.

“The other songs I’ve never heard before so they can be interesting,” she says.

“I’ve got a CD at home to practice with although I don’t practice as often as I should.”

The 79-year-old has been attending the St Albans Rockers of Ages choir since it began in August last year.

“This is the first time I have been in a choir where I can interact with other people” The choir, founded by The Muse Community Music Trust, began in response to a need for companionship

and fellowship amongst the elderly following the February earthquake.

The choir is like a Christchurch version of the Young @ Heart elders’ chorus based in Massachusetts, where elderly people sing popular songs from today’s music.

Mrs Head, who sings tenor, says being part of the choir has helped her deal with the earthquakes of the past year.

“It has let me concentrate on something else [other than the earthquakes]. I enjoy the companionship and love the fellowship,” she says.

Her daughter Christine Head, 55, has also joined Rockers of Ages.

“I was interested in being in a four-part harmony. I have been a karaoke singer for about eight years so I really wanted to get into a choir,” she says.

“I just love the variety of music here. There’s African songs, Latin, old songs, it’s all lovely music.”
