Conservation work rewarded Tania Butterfield “GOBSMACKED” is Woolston resident Tanya Jenkins’ response when asked about being awarded a Queen’s Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday honours list for services to conservation. “I really felt quite overwhelmed. You don’t expect it. It was a total surprise but I’m extremely grateful.” When you hear about a few of Ms Jenkins’ achievements, such as introducing Sea Week to New Zealand and creating environmental educational materials for teachers, it’s not hard to understand why she was nominated and awarded the QSM. But she is coy about her award, acknowledging the numerous volunteers she

has worked with in various projects. “Everyone wants to make a difference in the world and this is recognition that perhaps I have made a little bit of difference. It makes me quite emotional. “I’m a little bit embarrassed because I’m not the only one out there doing things. The more I reflect on it, the more honoured I feel,” she said. Ms Jenkins moved to Christchurch from Holland in the 1970s. She credits her parents with helping her to value the environment. “My parents were great Forest & Bird members. They used to take us out for walks and into the bush. We really appreciated nature

and I wanted to pass that on to my kids.” After moving to New Zealand it became apparent there was a lack of awareness of how beautiful the environment was, Ms Jenkins said. She started a travelling road show around Canterbury and the West Coast, teaching children about the environment and how they could look after it. “My motto is Awareness + Education = Protection. If you make children aware of how special this bird is but the bad thing is they are endangered, they then start thinking, ‘what can we do about it?’ That’s how you get children to take an interest in protecting the environment.” Continued on page 2

Road-widening project draws mixed reactions Christine de Felice

LOCAL road users have both brickbats and bouquets for the upgrading of Main Road from Ferrymead Bridge to McCormacks Bay to three lanes. The Christchurch City Council recently gave its approval for the project, which will see a third lane on Main Road, heading into town from Sumner, from the western end of the causeway at McCormacks Bay Road to just east of St Andrews Hill Road. The project will link with the Ferrymead Bridge widening project and aims to improve capacity on the road and maintain or improve safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. “While we are grateful that council is putting in a four-metre lane for pedestrians and cyclists, our biggest concern is that it (the three laning) is privileging cars,” president of the Mt Pleasant Residents Group Jocelyn Papprill said. “It will speed things up and we are concerned that it will be more difficult for people turning right off the hill from Mt Pleasant to go towards Redcliffs and Sumner. There will be two lanes coming towards them. We have been assured by planners that it won’t be a problem, but the proof will be in the eating. There will be more cars going along and it will speed things up,” she said. Widening the road to three lanes was aimed at helping to ease congestion, both now and

in anticipation of future use, for city-bound traffic in the morning peak time, Transport and Greenspace unit manager Alan Beuzenberg said. “The work also introduces a number of intersection changes and safety measures, which will help make it safer, particularly around the intersections of Main Rd with McCormacks Bay Rd and Mt Pleasant Rd, which have been the scene of several serious crashes and nearmisses.” However, Mrs Papprill said members of the residents association would like to see people using more public transport, especially when the city is more centrally located. Redcliffs resident Neal Parker was looking forward to the work being finished. A health and safety consultant working on demolition sites in the red zone, Mr Parker needs to travel between his home office and the city, sometimes several times a day. He said the recent hold-ups with the work on the Ferrymead bridge had been “quite a pain” so he had sometimes stayed in town rather than returning home. He said congestion had been particularly bad just before 8am. “Having the three lanes will be great. They almost need to have two lanes each way,” Mr Parker said. The work is expected to be completed next year.

Mrs Collins, who turns 90 this year, has also given her time and support for 30 years to the Sumner/Redcliffs Union Church, taking part in outreach work, and she was a founding board member of the Sumner Bays Union Trust. “She is hardworking and passionate about the community and she was the ideal person to get this award,” Mr Hayes said. Mrs Collins said she felt very humble at being nominated for the award. “I keep thinking of all the people who are doing things for the community – most of the people around this table (at her craft group) are doing tremendous things. But it’s lovely to be acknowledged.”

REDCLIFFS resident Win Collins is having her many years of service to the local community recognised with a Community Service Award. Community development worker for the Sumner Bays Union Trust Eddie Hayes nominated Mrs Collins for the Hagley/ Ferrymead Community Board Community Service Award for her “voluntary work over many years in Redcliffs”. A talented craftswoman, Mrs Collins runs a craft class in her home every Thursday afternoon where she teaches soft-toy making to a group of elderly women. The toys are donated to local organisations for fundraising.

Letter to the editor Structures THE earthquake-damaged seven-storey apartment building being demolished at Ferrymead does, in my view, owe its unpopularity to the morbid-looking dark colour of its blunt-shaped upper portion. A different colour scheme may have helped ease discomfort at the sight of the structure in the eyes of many. Incidentally, two large circular tanks at the Bromley sewage treatment works are rather more pleasing to view with their huge domeshaped tops not bringing any adverse public comment. May I inform you that copies of your publications are seemingly very popular with visitors to Woolston Supervalue Supermarket, where stocks of such are depleted by around 2pm on the day of issue. It is sometimes necessary to travel on to Ferrymead Mitre 10 Mega to procure copies as more appear to be available there until later in the day. Brian Walkin Phillipstown

Leaders needed for Sumner scout group Christine de Felice

THE Sumner Cub Scout group is looking for new leaders. The group meets on Thursday evenings in the old Sumner School hall. Its scout den and land in Truro Street are unable to be used at present as they have been issued with a Section 124 notice due to the danger of rockfall. However, premises were not the biggest problem, cub scout leader Erik Ellis said, rather it was the lack of leaders. At present the club has three leaders (two of whom are retiring after the current school term) and ideally they would like two more, he said. “If there is no-one to lead the Sumner Cub Scouts, the group will fold and the buildings and land will go back to Scouting Canterbury. In this event it will likely be sold and gone for future use.” The Thursday evening sessions last for an hour and a half and there are usually four events held each month. The boys learn a

range of skills and get involved in a wide variety of activities. For example, this week they are going on a night walk to Rapaki, and on ‘Master Chef’ nights they learn cooking skills. “It’s a lot of fun for everyone and it’s one of the most enjoyable things I do. It’s not a win/ lose situation for the boys, like competitive activities. They’re working together in a group and they’re learning lifelong skills,” Dr Ellis said. There had been a resurgence of interest in scouting with families wanting to become more involved in community activities, Dr Ellis said. “We want to keep it going in Sumner and we are looking for people to step up and commit to it.” Anyone interested in becoming a cub scout leader in Sumner can contact Erik Ellis at 326 5998 or 0274 310 582.

Governors Bay School ‘perfect’ for principal with big plans Christine de Felice

GOVERNORS Bay School’s new principal, Simon Mutch, who took up the post at the start of this year, says he looked at several opportunities before applying for his first principal position. “My last principal told me if I wanted to become a principal I had better do it before I turned 40 and that’s not far away. So I started looking last year and there were a number of positions that came up but none looked good enough to apply for, until Governors Bay came up and it was perfect,” Mr Mutch said. In his 17 years’ teaching experience, he has taught at St Anne’s Woolston, Newfield in Invercargill, Kirkwood Intermediate and Selwyn House School. Now, as the Governors Bay School principal, there were a number of goals he wanted to achieve. “I want to grow the roll. I want to have the school more involved with the Maori community and I want it to become more environmentally aware.” He aimed to enhance the school’s IT capabilities with the introduction of handheld devices into the classroom, and these would be arriving soon, he said. “I also want to involve the children in collaborating with other schools around New Zealand and the world. Already the senior class has been involved in a programme called ‘Rock Our World’, which is run out of a school owned by Will Smith in California.

They’ve collaborated on music tracks, Skyped other schools and shared their poetry during a session involving a number of schools that was broadcast live on the internet.” Mr Mutch said he’d had a passion for IT since he was at school and was “amazed” at the opportunities it offered students these days. “I’m also passionate about reading, writing and maths. I love getting students interested in reading. I’ve written a children’s novel myself, but it needs some work before I look at getting it published. I’ve always had an interest in maths and my wife is a maths teacher so we have some good discussions.” Mr Mutch said the focus at Governors Bay School was on teaching and learning. “There are no behaviour issues, and talking to other principals that is rare. It is scary what some of them have to deal with. “There is a very supportive community here and the parents are great. Everyone is there for everyone else and there is a really good feeling around the school. “I’m not dealing with major issues, so I can focus on teaching and learning. It’s easy to focus on what’s important when everyone is behind you. What’s important is the development of the

Councillor calls for awareness over sea level A WIDESPREAD attitude that sea level rise is a problem for the next century and “it won’t affect me” has been criticised by Councillor Claudia Reid after she attended a climate change conference in Wellington. Cr Reid attended the conference, organised by the New Zealand Climate Change Centre, earlier this month. She said what she saw and heard “should be of concern to everyone”, with sea levels forecast to rise by almost a metre by the end of the century. “Sea level rise is an unavoidable truth and it is essential that New Zealanders adopt a far more responsible attitude towards the risks it poses. ‘We’re all right, Jack’ no longer works. It places future generations of New Zealanders at serious risk.” Public apathy and official lethargy had been shaped by continuing scientific dispute over climate change but the debate was largely over. The rebuild was a good time to be thinking about the issue and take future sea level rise into account

children. Every decision in a school has to be based around that. If it’s not beneficial to the students, then it’s not worth doing.” Currently, the school has 66 pupils and four teachers but would like more, Mr Mutch said. “The hardest thing is letting people know how good it is here; if they knew that, I’m sure they’d come from Guidance: Governors Bay principal Simon Mutch helps Lucas Neumann, 6, with his school work. In the background are Scarlett Blake-Manson, Cherysh far and wide.” Morgan, Emily Simpson and Gabrielle Kitley.

Funds sought for repair of Manson Cottage Christine de Felice

FUNDING is being sought to cover some of the cost of repairs to the historic stone cottage at Orton Bradley Park. Charteris Bay resident Max Manson, whose great-grandfather Samuel Manson built the cottage in 1848, said that like so many other stone buildings, the cottage was badly damaged in the earthquakes. The chimney had been taken down and there were cracks in the walls. Insurance cover was not enough to meet the cost of the repairs. “The insurance covers only half of the quoted repair cost. The Orton Bradley Park Trust board has said to the Manson family, ‘If you can get $10,000 we will do our utmost to find the remaining money’,” Mr Manson said.

“The total cost has been quoted at $120,000. The heritage building fund will contribute some money towards the repairs.” The cottage was originally a stockman’s cottage when Samuel Manson farmed at Teddington. “The land was sold about 1850 and eventually taken over by Orton Bradley. The cottage has remained as Manson Cottage,” It had been used to store antique farming tools and equipment, but following the earthquakes, these items had been removed for their protection, Mr Manson said. The cottage was part of the history of Orton Bradley Park and the trust was keen to keep it there, he said. He hoped that members of the

Manson family would contribute to the $10,000 target. “There are Manson family members all over New Zealand – Samuel Manson had 17 children. And there are quite a few Mansons in the Bay Harbour area.” Mr Manson said living in Charteris Bay, he felt some

responsibility for the cottage. Manson family members, or anyone that wished to contribute to the fundraising effort, could deposit money into the Manson Cottage Restoration Trust of Orton Bradley Park account at any Westpac bank. The account number is 03 1703 000 3966 01.

Environment Canterbury passenger services manager David Stenhouse said decreased patronage as a result of the earthquake and the loss of passengers into the CBD have produced financial challenges that need to be addressed. “Careful analysis has identified routes which are not well-patronised, and we are changing their frequency of service, mostly in off-peak periods and weekends. “We are trying not to adversely affect anyone and believe most passengers will not notice much difference to their services,” Mr Now located next to Casual Stenhouse said. & Country Ferrymead Affected routes are 9 Wairakei, 23 Hyde Park Visit us for all your drycleaning needs to Woolston, 28 Lyttelton and Rapaki, 45 North Shore, 46 Marshland and 60 Parklands. Five Banks Peninsula environmental organisations have their funding in place for the next three years, following a change in policy by the Christchurch City Council. The five groups – Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust, Orton Bradley Park, Otamahua/Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust, Port Hills Park Trust Board and the Summit Road Society – signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mayor Bob Parker last Tuesday. From 2013, the organisations will receive

their annual funding from the council’s City Environment Group, which will contribute to their operational costs. Representatives at the signing were, from left, Ian McLennan, Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust; Oscar Alpers, Port Hills Park Trust Board; Jeremy Agar, Summit Road Society; Mayor Bob Parker, Christchurch City Council; Simon Martin, Orton Bradley Park; Alison Grigg, Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust; and Kay Holder, Christchurch City Council.

Easement agreements needed WORKS to rebuild the publicly owned retaining wall on Lyttelton’s Sumner Road by SCIRT contractor Fulton Hogan have been suspended temporarily, pending the signing of a handful of easement agreements. The easements for the Christchurch City Council cover the positioning of some ground

anchors under private properties. Ground anchors are horizontally drilled steel pins encased in concrete. These provide greatly increased strength to the retaining wall and the road, particularly in the event of any future earthquakes. The new wall will provide more security for residents and road users.

Club announces ongoing support Neil Murphy

FERRYMEAD Bays Football Club is delighted to announce the continued support of SBS Bank Ferrymead & Coverstaff. The junior club has received 150 new, highquality training bibs to assist in the delivery of junior football including the First Kicks and Fun Football training programmes. Without the support of our sponsors, our club would not be able to provide all that we do, so please support SBS Bank Ferrymead for your banking needs and Coverstaff for your temporary and permanent recruitment requirements. Successful session for juniors On Saturday, May 26, Fun Footballers (seven to eight year olds) enjoyed spending their weekend session at ASB Football Park, along with junior members of other clubs in Christchurch. Mainland Football of warm-up game rotations, then a series of small-sided games against other teams. Certificates and prizes were awarded and all children had a great time on the day. All junior queries can be directed to juniors@

ferrymeadbaysfootball.co.nz. Away game this weekend This Saturday, the Bays 1st X1 are playing away to Western. After two tough games against our closest rivals Coastal Spirit and Cashmere Technical, the Bays are hoping for a slightly less intense match against one of the bottom teams on the table. As current champions and table leaders, all the other teams always give that bit more effort to beat us so our away matches can be unpredictable. The match is at ASB Football Park (the old English Park), with a 2.45pm kickoff. All support is always greatly appreciated. The Div. 2 team will be entertaining Parklands on the main pitch at Barnett Park on Saturday with a 2.30pm kickoff. The previous match against Parklands away had six goals and ended in a 3-3 draw. All supporters are welcome. Neil Murphy is senior club captain for Ferrymead Bays.

Success: Lisa Brignull of Mt Pleasant (no. 34) placed second in the Women’s 20-39 grade of the Marathon.

Our emergency services

Festival a chance to celebrate community PeterDawson THE Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights starts this week, and St John is proud to be part of this fantastic community event. The earthquakes of the past 15 months have taken a brutal toll on our community. You only need to look around Lyttelton and see the gaps where so many of our buildings used to be to have a reminder of the earthquake and what it did. However, the Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights is a chance for us to celebrate the community and enjoy everything related to Lyttelton, and St John is proud to be a part of it. Like many in the Lyttelton and Banks Peninsula communities, St John has had some challenges since the earthquakes. Although we are still able to use our ambulance station,

we have to be conscious of future-proofing ourselves for more events – whatever they might be. So we are currently in discussions with our fellow colleagues in the Fire Service and the Police about co-locating in the future. We’ve also been fortunate to have received some generous donations from businesses and the local community, which has been a great support to us. These donations have been used to help us prepare through the purchasing of medical and emergency equipment, which is based in Lyttelton for use by St John in Lyttelton. St John will have a presence at the festival this week; please feel free to come by and say hello. We’d love to see you. Peter Dawson is chair of the St John Banks Peninsula area committee.

Its that time of year when lots of our customers are suffering with coughs and colds and in particular sore throats. We are often asked what can be done to treat and relieve sore throats. What is a sore throat? Everyone knows what a sore throat is, it is an inflammation at the back of the throat or of the tonsils. Sore throats are caused by viral or bacterial infections and are often the first sign of a cold or flu starting. Most sore throats are caused by viral infections which are spread by coughing, sneezing, kissing and sharing cups and utensils with someone who is already infected. Typically a viral sore throat gets worse over two to three days then improves and goes within a week. Bacterial infections can also cause sore throat, the most common being Strep throat caused by Streptococci bacteria. If your Doctor suspects you have a strep throat he or she may take a throat swab and may prescribe some antibiotics. However in most instances sore throats get better on their own. What can relieve a sore Throat? There are lots of over the counter products available to help ease the discomfort of a sore throat. Most of them relieve the symptoms only, they don’t cure the problem. Lozenges – Sucking a lozenge can help relieve a sore throat. Some have antiseptic agents in them, with or without a local anaesthetic to slightly numb the throat eg. Strepsils. Other lozenges like Difflam have an anti-inflammatory medication in them to relieve the pain and ease the swelling. Blis Throat Guard lozenges are a little different. They contain a particular form of probiotic bacteria which are thought to recolonise the throat with “good” bacteria and they also seem to inhibit the growth of other bacteria. Throat sprays – Difflam and Strepsils come in a spray form. These can be sprayed right to the back of the throat to give almost instant relief. Gargles – there are lots of antiseptic gargles available, some have anaesthetics in them eg Cepacaine. Difflam also comes in a gargle . Lots of people find Betadine gargle helpful for a sore throat. It contains an iodine antiseptic which may be effective against bacteria and viruses. Pain relief tablets – Paracetamol and Nurofen can ease the pain of a sore throat, and help with any associated headaches or fevers. Natural products – Products containing Vitamin C and Echinacea may help your sore throat heal up more quickly. Zinc may also speed up the healing time. Blackmores Echinacea ACE & Zinc and Ethical Nutrients Immune Defence are examples of these sort of products. What to watch out for? Most sore throats do not require medical attention and get better on their own within a week. However it is wise to get medical attention if the symptoms persist or if you are concerned about other associated symptoms for example earache or sinus pain. In a small number of cases a sore throat can be due to an unusual but more severe illness. Examples of these are glandular fever and thrush. Medical attention should be sought if these are suspected.

“We really want all kinds of stories, not just the dramatic ones. And we are also interested in stories about life post-earthquake – about the challenges associated with rebuilding, moving, dealing with insurance issues and other matters. “We are looking to get as wide a cross-section of people as possible, in as many languages as possible. “We are also very keen to record those who are multilingual so we can compare the content and how they tell their same story in different languages,” Professor Hay said. The UC QuakeBox was previously located in the Re:Start Mall in the central city. It will be at Eastgate until June 19, the second in a series of site changes planned to take place until at least the end of the year.

n Tu

RESIDENTS in the city’s eastern suburbs have the chance to record their earthquake experiences at the University of Canterbury’s QuakeBox recording studio in Eastgate Shopping Centre. The booth is in the car park outside the main supermarket entrance. It is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. No appointment is necessary. Each visit lasts an average of 15 minutes. UC QuakeBox is a collaborative project between the New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour (NZILBB) at the University of Canterbury and UC CEISMIC (Canterbury Earthquake Digital Archive). It will be an invaluable archive and research tool in the future, NZILBB director Professor Jen Hay said.

THIS year, Our Lady Star of the Sea School has a wonderful new music teacher, Josephine Oorschot. She has revitalised the music in the school and has made this a highlight of the week. Every Monday morning, the hall is filled with a sea of smiling faces as students sing a mixture of traditional, liturgical and modern songs. Josephine also teaches the junior school students the violin using the Suzuki method. Every child has a violin and they learn to play music by ear. “This focus on their ability to listen really helps them to concentrate and use their brain,” Josephine says. “There are spin-offs for all their other learning activities. Their memory improves, which makes a big difference in subjects like reading and maths.” Josephine also introduces music theory to these five to seven-year-olds. Macklan Robertson

Another positive outcome has been the huge growth in confidence in our young musicians. Recently, a class of Year 2/3 students shared their violin skills at assembly. They are really enjoying music and are very enthusiastic about this opportunity to learn the violin.

First aid, sport and science A REPRESENTATIVE from the Red Cross visited Our Lady Star of the Sea earlier this term to share her knowledge about first aid. She gave out a cool torch radio for every family’s emergency kit. Our school cross-country was held on May 18, and on Tuesday some people in the senior school participated in the Bays Cluster zone and had a great time competing and supporting! Recently, each of the classrooms had a trip into space with Science Alive in their Star Dome and we also had a science lesson with Anna learning more about space. Our year 8 students are looking forward to their upcoming trip to Wellington, where they will experience an afternoon in Parliament, lessons at Te Papa and a morning at the Weta cave.

Getting involved: Diamond Harbour residents provided plenty of feedback at the community engagement day.

SPRIG community engagement day held at the DHB Hall on Saturday, May 19, attracted a steady stream of visitors all day. A group of talented locals had put together a poster presentation offering an overview of what was on the Stoddart Point area and what could be there. This included a site analysis, along with historical and current information about the site. Part of the display was provided by the local Diamond Harbour School children. The display was informed by the community’s wishes, including the school, as expressed at the September public meeting. Visitors engaged with Sprig members, members of council and with one another. Postits were used liberally on the posters around the walls, providing valuable feedback. The display was moved to the church foyer where it received even more comments and suggestions. It was also at the school for a few days. Without Godley House, the Diamond Harbour and bays community is hurting and it needs access to the Godley site as soon as possible to provide activities that offer a visitor destination. This will help make the Diamond Harbour ferry viable for residents and provide a social focal point for the community. While the community is a small one, it is no smaller than Akaroa. Without the activities provided by Godley House and the ferry service,

Diamond Harbour and the southern bays have very few other options in terms of easy access to commercial and community facilities. The next stage in our process for regenerating the southern bays by rejuvenating and developing the Godley House and Stoddart Point sites was to speak to the Christchurch City Council’s Annual Plan process yesterday. We presented the community’s wishes for the site in the short term, hoping for some resolution on how the DHB and bays community might use the Godley site. In particular, this would be for cultural, social and commercial purposes

A group of willing volunteers gathered at the Charlesworth Wetland reserve for the annual planting day on May 20. They planted 2000 native tree seedlings donated by Trees for Canterbury. Their hard work was rewarded with a free sausage sizzle and drinks. There was also entertainment for the children, guided tours of the wetland area and spot prizes.

that would enhance the whole of the harbour area, encouraging locals and tourists alike to see Diamond Harbour as a destination. We will go back to the community with a Business and New Ideas Expo, which should happen before October. The most exciting part of this is the engagement of the community including the school children right through to our elderly population. Everyone has ideas and information to offer and is doing so freely. This is exactly what we were hoping for when Sprig was formed – community-led development.

Mt Pleasant Farmers Market

For all your motoring needs we are your one

WINTER vegetables are now abundant, especially sprouts, parsnips and broccoli. Fried Brussels sprouts are a must and a firm favourite in my household, as is roast pumpkin and squash. We wish Lois from Grannies Goodies all the best as she has had to go to Australia to help sick relatives. She will be missed but will be back soon. We also hope that Jock wins the fight over his troubles. Goan and Egyptian cookery lessons are underway and if you would like to attend any please see me or Jenny or Ehmed and Sue on their stalls for more details. Earthquake insurance meetings are being held locally – again see me for more details. The last week for tomatoes is upon us and they will be missed. Smoked salmon from Stewart Island is increasingly popular, as is winter ale, especially Porter from Raindog brewery, which has proved a winner. Shoppers enjoy the atmosphere of the market. “Even on a rainy day, stall holders have a smile, a friendly word and good cooking tips. It’s that human touch that makes the market so fantastic,” Di from Soleares Ave says.

Heartwarming dishes for winter

W

ith the cooler weather here, Sumner’s popular Cornershop Bistro has added some nourishing and heartwarming dishes to their menu. Their fabulous braised lamb shoulder returns, along with a delicious sticky date pudding with hot toffee sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. Rod and Kath Cross live and work in Sumner. Chef Rod is a dab hand at foraging for food and has had a successful season gathering porcini mushrooms. Rod makes porcini oil, which gives new dishes - such as a delicious mushroom risotto with shaved parmesan and rocket - a unique flavour. Home is another source of fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables including feijoas and Jerusalem artichokes, which are delicious roasted with a fish dish or ratatouille. Their new brunch menu sees the return of the popular spicy baked beans with chorizo sausage and scrambled eggs, the perfect accompaniment to C4 coffee. Fully licensed, the Cornershop Bistro hosts monthly Bistro Nights and the theme for Monday, May 28, was wine and cuisine from South West France. Give Kath a call if you would like to be on their mailing list so they can keep you up-to-date with next month’s province. Rod and Kath are proud of the way the Sumner community has come together following the earthquakes, with the help of the Sumner Business Association, to encourage people back to this vibrant suburb. Opposite the bistro are two fabulously decorated containers – one created by CPIT design school and the local community with support from D.J Hewitt Builders and Gordon Harris Art Supplies. The other is by artist Tony

ProPosed ChristChurCh City CounCil Brothels Bylaw The Christchurch City Council is proposing to make a bylaw to regulate the location of brothels and signage advertising commercial sexual services. Currently there are no controls around where a brothel can set up in the city, as the Christchurch City Brothels (Location and Signage) Bylaw 2004 expired on 6 July 2011. The proposed Christchurch City Council Brothels (Location and Commercial Sexual Services Signage) Bylaw 2012 will provide controls on where brothels, other than small owneroperator brothels (SOOBs), can operate. In addition operator-run brothels will not be permitted on a property that shares a boundary with a school or is immediately adjacent to any important open space area in the Central City, as shown on the Central City map in Schedule 1 of the proposed Bylaw. The Bylaw will exempt small owner-operator brothels (SOOBs) and known existing operator-run brothels from the location provisions of the Bylaw. Signs advertising commercial sexual services will be prohibited in residential areas and other parts of the district, but will be allowed in the same areas in which operator-run brothels can be located. The Bylaw will regulate signage advertising commercial sexual services by requiring that only one sign be displayed and that signs: be attached to the premises at which the commercial sexual services are provided; clearly display the number of the premises to which the sign relates; not be offensive; not display any pictorial image; not exceed 0.3 square metres in surface area; and not be illuminated by any flashing light.
