HEAVY downpours failed to dampen Cantabrians’ enthusiasm for Cup Week and the A&P Show with thousands turning out to soak up the carnival-like atmosphere. Over 20,000 people attended New Zealand Trotting Cup Day at Addington on Tuesday with the crowd enjoying the new facilities. Addington Raceway’s marketing manager Ged Mooar said the day was a huge success with excellent feedback about the new stands and party central area. “It was such an exciting atmosphere and people were really happy with what we had put in place. “Even people who’d been attending Cup Day for years were commenting on how great the new party central area and everyone was having a wonderful time. Day two of the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton Park Raceway on Wednesday ended on a damp note with the last race being abandoned due to track conditions. Riccarton Park sponsorship and marketing manager Chris Rowe said the the race would now run as an extra race at 11:50am before tomorrow’s Christchurch Casino Cup Day. “It’s our anniversary week so I’m sure lots of people will want to come out and celebrate after the tough year that we’ve been through. “We’ve had very strong pre-sales so I hope the weather will come to the party. Meanwhile, heavy afternoon downpours failed to deter a crowd of over 10,000 people from attending the first day of the A&P Show on Wednesday. Event director Rae Finlay said people enjoyed the indoor pavilions during the rainy afternoon. “We had a great start considering the weather with more families visiting this year and over 3000 children on school trips went through the gates on the first day. “Even when it rained people could move indoors and enjoy the events and shopping. Ms Finlay said yesterday’s more settled weather drew a crowd of around 20,000. She expected a good turnout for today’s Show Day with the weather predicted to be mainly fine. “As the sun has started to come out the crowds have picked up and it’s a great opportunity for Cantabrians to get out and enjoy their special day.
