HEAVY downpours failed to dampen Cantabrians’ enthusiasm for Cup Week and the A&P Show with thousands turning out to soak up the carnival-like atmosphere. Over 20,000 people attended New Zealand Trotting Cup Day at Addington on Tuesday with the crowd enjoying the new facilities. Addington Raceway’s marketing manager Ged Mooar said the day was a huge success with excellent feedback about the new stands and party central area. “It was such an exciting atmosphere and people were really happy with what we had put in place. “Even people who’d been attending Cup Day for years were commenting on how great the new party central area and everyone was having a wonderful time. Day two of the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton Park Raceway on Wednesday ended on a damp note with the last race being abandoned due to track conditions. Riccarton Park sponsorship and marketing manager Chris Rowe said the the race would now run as an extra race at 11:50am before tomorrow’s Christchurch Casino Cup Day. “It’s our anniversary week so I’m sure lots of people will want to come out and celebrate after the tough year that we’ve been through. “We’ve had very strong pre-sales so I hope the weather will come to the party. Meanwhile, heavy afternoon downpours failed to deter a crowd of over 10,000 people from attending the first day of the A&P Show on Wednesday. Event director Rae Finlay said people enjoyed the indoor pavilions during the rainy afternoon. “We had a great start considering the weather with more families visiting this year and over 3000 children on school trips went through the gates on the first day. “Even when it rained people could move indoors and enjoy the events and shopping. Ms Finlay said yesterday’s more settled weather drew a crowd of around 20,000. She expected a good turnout for today’s Show Day with the weather predicted to be mainly fine. “As the sun has started to come out the crowds have picked up and it’s a great opportunity for Cantabrians to get out and enjoy their special day.

“Yes definitely. They did a fantastic job in the World Cup.”

“No. There is no “I” in the word team and Richie McCaw was just one player in that team. I don’t think he would be comfortable with that.”

A CYF staff member assaulted at the Ministry of Social Development’s temporary Papanui office on Monday returned to work on Wednesday. The attacker had “nearly killed himself” after he had bodily smashed through windows and internal glass doors and was bleeding heavily, he said. After speaking to police the man was taken to hospital in a serious condition. He

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11 2011

From the editor

Chris Tobin editor@mainlandpress.co.nz

Hanging on to things that define us CUP and Show Week, a defining feature of Canterbury life and the biggest week in the region’s calendar, has been proving a treat for the city and region in spite of blustery winds and frequent showers. On Tuesday a crowd of 20,000 gathered at the mecca of harness racing, Addington Raceway, with the sights trackside again providing nearly as much interest as the racing itself - women in stylish hats and clothes, younger women in short tight-fitting dresses tottering on high heels accompanied by their men ‘suited’ reluctantly, it seemed, for the day. One woman provided some diverting interest also, just before the main event, the NZ Trotting Cup, with a disrobing act which no doubt startled the driver of race favourite Smoken Up ….and did it upset the horse? Smoken Up led out early and was run down to place second. The week, meanwhile, has continued on in a similar buoyant if less spectacular manner with the A & P Show

one more thing

and the gallops at Riccarton. A significant event during the week also has been the de-consecration of ChristChurch Cathedral. This building too has been a defining feature of the city and region. A debate now is centred on whether parts of it should be kept and restored or demolished and removed. The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority has issued a demolition notice while the cathedral administrators have announced plans for partial demolition and work to make it earthquake safe. To totally demolish and remove what is left of the cathedral would be a hugely negative move. Cup and Show Week and the cathedral, regardless of one’s religious affiliations or views, are the things that define us and are worth hanging on to. It is important that as much of the cathedral which can be retained and restored should be.

Opinion

Joining ‘The Club’ I’M a SAD person, especially this time of the year when one should be moaning about the hot nor-westers, bracing themselves as they dive into the briney and spend the evenings out round the barbie with a nice cold drink Yes SAD, (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is where I am at, cyclic depression, increased appetite, increased need for sleep, detachment, socially isolating myself - yeah right, you may say but it’s true. The weather at the moment is the pits, unless you are a farmer. I am really over the four seasons in a day but when you get it happening multiple times during the same day, it is no wonder I have lost it. At this time of the year I usually have the brownest legs in town, my face is in a raw state, because no makeup in the world will match the nugget colour (my daughter says) and the summer salad has been helpful on my hips. But no, the winter lard is weighing heavy on me; I’m grumpy and can’t blame it on the quakes. But there was a real unbelievable day that erased all traces of SAD from my thinking. On Saturday my

Aside from the fact that I had not pecially after watching the effect of it been briefed about how or why a on the happy and beautifully dressed new-born could stay underwater for Cup/Show people who deserved so long (I almost climbed into the a great party, I find myself driving pool to help her out) I can’t believe along smiling thinking about what the impact this beautiful child has the future holds for our Lydia, what dreams she will have, what chalhad on this hardened exterior. I can’t believe how gooey, how lenges she will face and the beauty soft my voice has become, how of living in a country that holds so proud I feel to know I am finally in much promise. I smile when I think of her parents’ ‘The Club,’ the grandparents club. Now I know what all my much older long nights to come, mixed with the friends talk about. What a feeling, pleasures that her milestones will what a joy this new child brings to bring. I smiled and thought to myself how lucky I am, as I walked through the family dynamics. Of course I want to interfere. I the park, then it rained, and you know managed to drag my two up, so why I wasn’t quite so SAD after all.

Ask the Mayor Has Civil Defence and the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority been too hasty in their demolition of historic buildings in central Christchurch? THE September, February and June earthquakes caused significant damage to buildings in our central city, including heritage buildings. Tragically 42 lives were lost when unreinforced masonry buildings collapsed. Both the council and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust have been involved in discussions with Cera on the future of heritage buildings. And I’m of the view that it is important that all options are explored before a decision is made to demolish a

heritage building. We are seeing this now over the future of Christ Church Cathedral and that’s wise. However, ultimately the final decision about an unsafe building lies with Cera. In all decisions on any buildings public safety has to be paramount. We do not want any more tragedies too many people have lost their lives already. If you have a question for Mayor Bob Parker email editor@mainlandpress. co.nz

All elevens on Armistice Day y TODAY’S Armistice Day commemorations will be held not only on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month as usual, but also the 11th year of the century. A service will be held at 11am today ay at the Henry Nicholas VC MM statue tatue in Remembrance Park, adjacent to the Bridge of Remembrance. Dean of Christchurch, The Very y Reverend Peter Beck will dedicate wreaths from Mayor Bob Parker, Consular Corps, members of Parliament, representatives of the services and the Returned and Services’ Association (RSA) following the observation of a two-minute silence at 11am. Christchurch RSA vice president Pete Dawson said Armistice Day remained as important as ever. “New Zealand soldiers, along with other Commonwealth forces and particularly the Australians, suffered the highest loss of life of any forces throughout the First World War. It’s just the importance of remembrance of those sacrifices that effectively were made on our behalf.”

It being eleventh year of the eing the eleve enth yea century was not particul particularly notable, he said. The centenary centenar commemorations in 2018 would d bbe much more significant. Christchurch RSA president Russell Barron will be attending commemoration services in Le Quesnoy, France, where the Canterbury regiment stormed the walls to liberate the city from Germany occupation.

THE Trinity Building on the corner of Worcester and Manchester streets, home to Octagon Live, was severely damaged in February’s earthquake but the theatre’s musicians have regrouped to kick off rebuild efforts with a comeback concert on November 25 in Hagley Park. Singer Natalie Slade, whose family has owned the Trinity Building since 1993, said while February’s earthquake was a huge setback she was focused on creating a positive future for the historical landmark which would see it transformed into a carbon neutral building. The family originally used the building for their wedding business and then transformed it into Octagon Live theatre and restaurant in 2006. “The building was such a gem for Christchurch so we are very lucky to be able to keep some of the original history and character including the beautiful rimu interior of the main building and the pipe organ. “The exterior will have a makeover with the old parish hall and original tower being replaced by state-of-the-art buildings.” Miss Slade believed the new Trinity building would capture the essence of the original structure while setting the standard for other

historic Christchurch buildings to follow. “We have a rare opportunity to preserve history while making these special buildings safe and environmentally friendly. “I hope other historic building owners will follow our lead and improve upon the original buildings that make Christchurch so beautiful.” After performing and producing music shows nightly for the past five years at Octagon Live, Miss Slade was excited about reuniting with the

other Octagon Live musicians. “We’ve been through so much together over the last five years so it is wonderful to perform for such a good cause.” Miss Slade hoped that the Trinity Building would be rebuilt by the end of next year or early 2013. The concert will be held at the Celebration Theatre, Hagley Park, at 6:30pm on Friday November 25. Tickets cost $25 and all proceeds will go towards rebuilding the Trinity Building.

Quake worker now a reverend

ANIMAL PHYSIO

Tom Doudney

STEVE Hira, the man who shot to prominence after the February 22 earthquake when he traded in his high-paying job for community work, is now a reverend. The Cashmere resident gave up a six-figure salary as a water filter salesman in order to take up a non-paid role coordinating an Aranui-based community welfare voluntary group assisting earthquake victims and the eastern suburbs community. His achievements included setting up a local foodbank. As well as being senior pastor of the Christchurch Workshop Centre, he is also chairman of the Whakaoranga Trust, an organisation which offers Oscar children’s programmes, a free community gym and a

budget advice service among its operations. Last weekend, Mr Hira was officially ordained as a reverend of the Assembly of God New Zealand at a service held in the Aranui Primary School hall. He was pleased to have been ordained and said his work following the earthquake had probably brought the service forward. “It was great, just a step forward from where I was before.” Part of his current focus with the Whakaoranga Trust was on helping people find work. “We can’t give people food forever and a day so it’s really pinpointing what the main issues are, why do they continue to Feeding the masses: Steve Hira inspecting need food and one big issue has some supplies at the food bank in Aranui earlier this year. Christchurch to Mt Cook flights welcomed AN announcement that flights between Christchurch and two of the South Island’s top tourist attractions will be introduced over the 2012-2013 summer has been well received by the tourism industry. Air New Zealand will offer a trial service between Christchurch, Mount Cook and Queenstown over six weeks at the peak of summer, operating three times a week, with flights timed to connect with the direct service between Tokyo and Christchurch. Christchurch International Airport chief executive Jim Boult was pleased the flights would begin next December. “The Japanese travel market has been asking for this service for a long time,”

he said. “We know many Asian visitors who come here consider seeing Mount Cook the highlight of their visit.” Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter predicted it would not only be overseas visitors boarding the new flights. “Many New Zealanders regard Mount Cook highly too, so will welcome the chance to make a day trip or weekend visit to see the mountain and surrounding scenery.” The Hermitage hotel’s John Davies was also thrilled with news of the flights into Mount Cook. “The Hermitage hosts about 85,000 visitors and across the summer months, about 90 per cent of them are international.”

New facility a boost for dairy company

Milking it: Synlait Milk’s new facility near Dunsandel is seen as an important step forward for the company.

CANTERBURY-based dairy company Synlait Milk’s recently commissioned $100 million infant nutritional facility near Dunsandel has already played an important role in raising the company’s profile according to its chief executive Dr John Peno. The company has produced its first consumer packaged infant formula for export to China and Dr Peno said the “best in-class” approach to developing the new facility had led international customers to take notice. The facility, which the company

claims is the largest and most sophisticated in the Southern Hemisphere, was commissioned on time in September despite challenges from earthquakes impacting on the Canterbury region. It will be officially opened by Minister of Trade Tim Groser at a ceremony on November 22 which is expected to be attended by the company’s customers from Asia, Europe, Australia and the Middle East, as well as government officials and farmers who supply milk to the company. Synlait Milk’s new corporate brand will also be launched at the event.

A SOCIAL media initiative called Kiwis Come Home has been launched to lure young expatriates back to help with the Christchurch rebuild. Kiwis Come Home founder Tim Howe said that it was vital that post-earthquake Christchurch did not lose a generation of young people at a time when they were desperately needed. “It is essential to attract these people back now to get involved in the rebuild. “Christchurch companies are having trouble finding talented people to fill vacancies and if we don’t show the positive side of returning then in 10 years we will end up with a lost generation.” Mr Howe said Kiwis Come Home would showcase a combination of career opportunities, accounts from those who had recently returned and interesting events happening in Christchurch. “We want to show young people living overseas that Christchurch is still a wonderful place to live, work and play.” Gary Lee, whose company E2 Digital designed the Kiwis Come Home logo, said he was having trouble finding software engineers. “I think a lot of young Kiwis would

Church shows support for City THE loss of events in Christchurch following the February quake prompted the Baptist Churches of NZ to support the city by changing the location of its annual assembly from Hamilton to Lincoln University. Around 600 representatives from New Zealand’s 244 Baptist congregations

have registered – a 50 percent increase on the usual numbers. The conference began yesterday and will run until Sunday and is focusing on the care of families and children. A nationwide Baptist appeal has raised more than $436,000, which has helped fund community initiatives in the city.

Short film festival boosts Sumner WITH many central city cinemas out of action due to February’s earthquake Hollywood Cinema in Sumner stepped up to host the Show Me Shorts short film festival. Festival director Gina Dellabarca said it was very important that Christchurch people didn’t miss out on this festival which is in its sixth season. “I’m sure everyone is keen for a bit of escapism and some culture in a city that has been stripped of so much. “We hope that we can provide a little bit of that and that people will find time to come out to this gorgeous old picture palace and enjoy these fantastic short films.” Ms Dellabarca said the festival offered something for everyone including several films that had already won awards at film festivals in Toronto and Cannes. The short films were organised into a variety of session themes entitled: Unexpected Adventure, Master Chef, Love You to Death, Extreme Measures, Small Pleasures, Unlikely Bedfellows and Hitting the Road. Each session included about seven short films tied together by a common theme. The sessions ran for about 80 minutes each and the average length of each film was eleven minutes.

HORNBY HUB – NORTH CHALMERS STREET AT CARMEN CORNER

The Hub Hornby has announced it is planning a major expansion in the near future. The expansion will be the largest in the mall’s history and will see a brand new, large format Farmers Department Store built at the eastern end of the centre. A new food court will also be built along with a new internal wing of stores, running parallel to Chalmers St, joining the current two branches to create a full loop of retail that customers can easily navigate. Two levels of car parking will be built over the eastern end of the centre and linked to the existing roof-top parking over Pak’n Save. Centre manager, Jason Marsden says. “This is a very exciting announcement. Hornby is a fantastic, burgeoning community and this redevelopment will allow us to offer a bigger range of stores and services.” The Hub Hornby suffered only minor cosmetic damage as a result of the earthquakes and foot traffic and turnover spiked by 30% and continues to be well above the previous year. Mr Marsden says “We were able to trade through the earthquake period and that was testament to the building structure and stability of the ground. Our new structure will be built to exceed the new building standards so we can be confident of offering our new retailers and customers a high levels of seismic protection.” Owned by a local syndicate of investors and managed by Colliers International Property Management, The Hub Hornby has seen phenomenal growth over the past ten years with the introduction of a Pak’n Save supermarket, six banks and an increasing range of specialty stores. Drawing on the catchments of the Selwyn District, population has grown by over 19% between 1996 and 2006, with an influx of Christchurch residents moving westward. The development is scheduled to open in stages over the next three years, with Farmers being completed in the first stage. Further information will be released at a later date.

Gardening with Rachel Vogan Tomatoes in containers If space and time is limited, tomatoes are easy to grow in pots, tubs, baskets, containers and bags. All they require is a sunny position and watering a couple of times a week. Old recycling bins are perfect for a plant or two. For pots simply choose a container at least 2-3 times the size of a kitchen bucket (20-30litres) or use a Haxnicks tomato planter and fill with Tui Tomato Mix, this mix has all the goodies in it already to produce a bumper crop. You can even poke a few holes in the bottom of the potting mix bag for drainage and plant straight into the mix if time, space and the inclination takes you

Something to look out for: Tomato Campari (tasty tom) is a vibrant gourmet variety with the most intense juicy and flavoursome fruit. Its striking intense red colour simply adds to its appeal. If planting in rows, plant 60cm – 80cm apart to allow plenty of air movement. This variety sometime appears in the supermarket too.

The new BMW X3 Bob Nettleton

A

nother new model has been added to the BMW recrea onal 4WD stable with the arrival of the second genera on X3. BMW has refreshed their 4WD line up

in the last couple of years, launching a second genera on itera on of their flagship X5 and an all-new compact model that gives buyers a boost to the first rung of the BMW 4WD automobiles. The latest X3 model launches onto the market with more power from its two diesel engine op ons teamed with a groundbreaking 8-speed automa c. Only two new X3 models are offered and both are turbo diesels. One is an enhanced version of the lively 2.0 litre motor found in the X1 Minimum of $100* up to $5000* for while the other is a rip-roaring 3.0 any car, ute, van, 4WD & trucks litre six and priced at $87,000 and $107,000, respec vely. The model fi ed with the smaller of the two engines was provided for this road test. However, nearly $20,000 in 115A Main South Road, Sockburn op onal extras pushed the price of Ph: 03 348 6542 or 0800 576911 the car nearly to the level of the sixConditions Apply* Selected makes and models only. cylinder version. The X3 is pre y well-equipped without the need to go through the op ons list and risk increasing the asking price by several thousand dollars more than it actually needs to be. This is confirmed by a quick scan of the list of standard equipment, which includes a rearview camera, a FULL MECHANICAL USB audio interface, Bluetooth, and AND AUTO ELECTRICALREPAIRS keyless start up. • WOF’s • Clutch & brake specialists Kicking the X3 along with a • Full mechanical repairs available reasonable amount of enthusiasm is • CV joints/boot replacements a 135kw four-cylinder in-line diesel • Car/4WD tyres • Auto transmission servicing that zips through 0 to 100 km/h dash • Petrol/diesel vehicle servicing in a brisk 8.5 seconds. However, this looks a bit sluggish against the 6.2 COURTESY CARS seconds of the 190kw three-litre AVAILABLE six-cylinder in-line diesel engine to do the same job. from around 2000rpm onwards and engine noise is almost indiscernible at open road cruising speeds. A new 8-speed automa c is a first for this market and while I can see the benefits of all these gears in the very energe c 3-litre turbo diesel, they are hardly essen al for the lower powered 2.0 litre motor. I felt the engine could do the job on both the performance and fuel economy fronts just as effec vely with a cheaper six-speed auto clocking the gear changes. Load and passenger space is amongst the more generous allotments at the pres gious end of the SUV market. Luggage capacity is never an issue with 550 litres available with the rear seat in use and almost 1600 litres when they are folded down. However, if you are picky, rear leg and shoulder room is only adequate. It is the clever stuff that helps sell vehicles at this end of the market. The X3 is loaded in that department star ng with a Dynamic Damper Control system that lets the driver select between “NORMAL,” “SPORT,” and “SPORT+” se ngs. It is not the

R L U GBY LEA O O H C S GUE H G I A H C I AD U N EM A R Y Shortland Street, Aranui, Christchurch, New Zealand A Phone: 388 7083 www.aranui-high.school.nz Aranui High School Rugby League Academy has been in existence for many years with the original goal of helping keep students at the school. During their time with the academy students learn about playing rugby league and gain credits to go towards a National Certificate in Sport or NCEA. Three days a week are spent training, either on the field or in the gym, says Te Wairau, Development Officer for Canterbury Rugby League and the League Director for the Aranui High School Rugby League Academy. A highlight of the year was playing against a Greymouth High Invitational team in Greymouth to raise funds for the Pike River families and the Canterbury Earthquake fund. “The game against the Greymouth High Invitational team was great for the academy and the Coasters were all behind the idea and on the night there was a great atmosphere,” says Te Wairau. Another highlight was visits from several rugby league professionals which included Steve Price, Nathan Cayless, Elijah Taylor and Darren Bell who is the Recruitment Manager for the Melbourne Storm. The team from Aranui High School was the only South Island school

team to be sent to the National Rugby League Tournament in Auckland where they won the Bowl. The boys in the academy are involved not just in playing rugby league but also coaching, mentoring and refereeing. Many of the boys are involved with coaching and refereeing school teams from the Canterbury Rugby League competition on Fridays at South Hagley Park. The academy also held their own holiday programme at Wainoni Park this year. Other lessons learned along the way including professional skills such as team work, leadership skills and confidence building. Potential students apply to Course Director, Te Wairau, to attend the academy which has no fees and is internally assessed. The best result for the academy is for the boys to launch a professional rugby career, says Te Wairau. Other options from completing the course include working in sport refereeing, careers as sports development officers, sport conditioning, coaching, sports and recreational trainers and gym managers. Plans for 2012 include playing at the National Rugby League Tournament held in Auckland again and also travelling to Melbourne to play local teams.

Fewer airpoints for Blackadder’s mob! BIG day Tuesday and we all know why. Of course it was Trotting Cup Day at Addington and a great chance for Cantabrians to party. God knows everyone who has lived here for the past 12 months is entitled to give it a rip now and again. Let’s face it Cup Day has been a Canterbury tradition for over 100 years and is the envy of every other province in New Zealand. Nothing could upstage the Addington event could it? You want to bet? At midday Prime Minister John Key made a major announcement. Canterbury would have a new home for the Crusaders rugby season 2012! Wow, that caused an even bigger ripple around the race track than even the legend Blossom Lady was able to do. There were many doubters in Canterbury who could not believe the pledge CEO Hamish Riach made months ago that he was committed to finding a base for our beloved and over achieving Crusaders for their

next campaign. As time moved on, it appeared more and more that this promise just did not have the legs to come to fruition. What the doubters didn’t calculate on was the huge effort behind the scenes that was taking place. A deal was brokered between the Canterbury and New Zealand rugby unions along with the Christchurch City Council and the government to deliver on the promise. The irony of the announcement was not lost on the punters on course that the new venue was in fact just a long range Dan Carter penalty goal from where they were gathered.

Addington Rugby League ground will be overhauled and revamped to be a temporary home for rugby, league, football and concerts. The challenges ahead given the tight time line involved will call for total cooperation from all the parties involved. Sure it won’t be a Twickenham, Suncorp or Dunedin Stadium - we live in a time and place where we have to cut our cloth according to what’s available. My hope is that we Cantabrians will get out and back up the people that made this courageous decision and fully support the teams and events that are to be the tenants of this new-look home for Canterbury rugby. It’s hard to imagine that the Crusaders can play much better than they have since they entered the Super competition. But the one thing we can be sure of is that the players’ beds at home will be a hell of an improvement on departure lounges and carting suitcases around the world week after week!
