MORE than 2500 people took to the Port Hills on Saturday for a remembrance run to mark two years since the February 2011 earthquake and show support for the children who lost a parent in the disaster. The inaugural Mitre 10 Mega A Run to Remember was the brainchild of St Martins man Hayden Stockdale, a keen runner who wanted others to experience the feeling of running along the Summit Road, taking in the views of Christchurch City, Pegasus Bay, the Southern Alps and the Canterbury Plains and reflect on what a wonderful place it was, despite the earthquakes, the uncertainty and the hardships of the past two years. Mr Stockdale had initially expected about 500 people to take up the challenge of the 12-kilometre fun run or walk from

Victoria Park, up the Harry Ell Track, along the Summit Road and down Rapaki Track, finishing at Hansen Park. Then the entries climbed to 1000, 1500, 2000 and more. “I just think people really bought into what we were trying to do or create,” he said. The atmosphere at the starting line was one of camaraderie and a sense of what the event was signifying. At the finish line, spot prizes, giveaways, food stalls and music kept people entertained until speeches were made and a minute’s silence was held at 12.51pm to remember the earthquake victims, after which children released 185 red and black balloons. Having done the hard yards this year to set it up from scratch

with a dedicated team of people who had never organised such an event before, Mr Stockdale said many people were asking him if the event would be repeated next year and onwards. “I spent about half an hour with my partner on Sunday morning talking about how we could do it next year…probably a definite maybe that we will run it again next year, with a few tweaks here and there.” He said while the final count had not yet been completed, he thought they had raised more than $20,000 for the Canterbury Earthquake Children’s Trust. • To see the video watch CTV News Tuesday February 26 On Demand at ctv.co.nz
