Firefighters want boss replaced Exclusive

Chris Tobin

CHRISTCHURCH professional fire fighters are calling regional fire management’s performance during the February 22 earthquake “woeful and want the regional boss, Rob Saunders, to resign or be dumped. New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union southern branch president Denis Fitzmaurice said an inquiry by the chief executive national commander Mike Hall into the February 22 earthquake backed up their claims. Fire service and USAR members work on the damaged ChristChurch Cathedral in February.

“The inquiry praises the firefighters but (at the time of the quake) apart from one assistant manager, there were no managers - they disappeared. One went home, one Dan Coward, was coming back from Wellington in a helicopter and the regional management team was nonexistent. According to Mr Fitzmaurice , Transalpine regional commander Rob Saunders who is responsible for the area from Timaru to Nelson and the West Coast was on leave at his home in Chester Street, Christchurch, near the central station on February 22. “He was there within an hour of the quake but was shunted aside after a couple of hours. He was not up to it, Mr Fitzmaurice said. “There’s a lot of angst coming from senior ranks, the senior station officers they ran the whole thing in the absence of these people. Mr Saunders said he was not aware of the firefighters union wanting him to resign and he would not comment on the inquiry or other questions regarding his leadership. He referred Mainland Press to the communications staff of the national office in Wellington. Continued on page 3

Global economic fears ‘won’t sink Canterbury business’ Tom Doudney

DESPITE the region’s earthquake troubles, Canterbury businesses are unlikely to be worse off than the rest of the country should the global economy take another dive, industry spokespeople say. Last week, Reserve Bank governor Dr Alan Bollard warned of the potential for a new and sharp slowdown in the global economy causing disruptions to the New Zealand economy. Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said Canterbury

businesses were used to living in volatile times and he was not anticipating anything extraordinary for the region. “It’s going to take more than an earthquake and a global financial crisis to knock them down. “Having said that we know these are challenging times and we know what the prospects are for times to be even more challenging so we need to be prepared and equipped for that but I’m sure we are.” Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief

executive Tim Hunter said the economic situation would be an issue which would affect the whole country but a falling New Zealand dollar could actually work in the tourism industry’s favour by making it more appealing for international visitors to come here. Many leisure customers had “a pretty big appetite” regardless of the global economic situation and the New Zealand tourism industry had shown itself to be reasonably resilient in 2008 and 2009.

“It certainly went down but it’s really an issue of by how much and I think New Zealand is pretty lucky in that we have visitors coming from all over the world.” While hard times were expected in the United States and European markets, growth was expected to continue in Asian economies, he said. How Australian travellers reacted to economic conditions would be of particular interest due to their importance to the New Zealand tourism market.

Firefighters union wants boss replaced Continued form page 1 National Commander Mr Hall was unavailable for comment but Assistant National Commander Trevor Brown said the Fire Service was concerned that a union official would make a public and personal attack on one of its senior managers in Canterbury. “The comments, as reported to us, may be defamatory and this type of staff relationship issue is not something we deal with via the news media. We have full confidence in our managers in Canterbury. The inquiry stated the NZ Fire Service response to the February 22 earthquake was outstanding but added that the Transalpine fire region was unable to provide any Civil Defence plans or emergency plans that could effectively support continued operations during a natural disaster. “This lack of plans, combined with the absence from the region of the Regional Commander (Saunders) and the Christchurch Area Commander (Coward) contributed to the delay in setting up formal management structures. Fire service national media advisor Karlum Lattimore said the plans were in a red stickered building which was not accessible. The inquiry stated operational crews worked in extreme conditions for a long duration without appropriate management support and leadership that would normally be expected. Communication after the quake across the fire service was “ad hoc.

‘There’s a lot of bitterness’ MICHELE Gyde, says seeing her firefighter husband Terry Gyde and other professional firefighters hurting after the February 22 earthquake is distressing. “When they come home the wives and kids have to pick up the pieces; we support them, but they don’t get support from above. Mrs Gyde said police, army and other emergency services had acknowledged acts of bravery by their staff in the February 22 earthquake aftermath - but not the fire service management in Christchurch of its personnel. “A lot of firemen say they were just doing their job but in the first 24 hours some people did some pretty amazing things. No-one’s said ‘you’ve done a good job.’ The impact on them has been huge. Some didn’t want to go into the CTV building, some were braver and went in.’ Assistant National Commander Trevor Brown said the fire service had acknowledged the brave actions of firefighters at a function held at the Air Force Museum in Wigram but professional firefighters chose not to take part. Mrs Gyde said morale

among firefighters was low and the effects of February 22 were ongoing. “Every time the images come on TV firemen get distressed and they’re hard buggers. It takes a lot to move them. I’ve never seen so many firemen in tears. “They’re displaced, fire stations are down, they’ve lost faith in management, there’s a lot of bitterness. They still want to be firemen but faith in those above them has gone. “The psychological impact will stay with them forever knowing they risked everything.

OVER 500 RINGS

“The Southern Communication Centre did not receive communication from region or area management for approximately two hours after the initial earthquake. The inquiry considered there was such a significant disconnect between regional and area management and staff that a review of the management structure was needed. Mr Fitzmaurice said firefighters’ anger and frustration was directed more at the regional and national commanders Mr Saunders and Mr Hall, rather than at Christchurch area command under Mr Coward. He said Mr Saunders had been in his position for seven to eight years. “The first couple of years were OK. The last five years have been dysfunctional. Mr Fitzmaurice had made his union’s concerns regarding Mr Saunders’ leadership known to Mr Hall on a number of occasions. “It goes on and on. If the national management don’t do anything, we will, Mr Fitzmaurice said. “We are totally disgusted with his leadership and we don’t want a bar of him. “There are very angry people out there, firefighters who put their lives on the line. To see how they’ve been led by that gentleman and his officials is just not on. If it was a battle, they’d be relieved of command.

‘Amazing rescues’ made THE Fire Service’s national commander’s inquiry into the February 22 earthquake praised the actions of fire service staff, members of the public, construction workers, retired and off duty firefighters in the hours after the February 22 earthquake. “All were involved in amazing rescues in extremely hazardous conditions at times without regard to their safety. “Many personnel took calculated risks that were beyond normal expectations and it noted that without accepting this level of risk, more lives may have been lost. The inquiry said the initial response to the CBD was a ‘self response’ initiated by senior station officers which “was appropriate under the extreme circumstances and worked well.

Preserving memories of lost Christchurch

All is not well in city’s fire stations

oing their bit Mainland Press meets people helping our earthquake recovery

Capturing memories: Wendy Riley of Halswell and Helen Solomons of Sumner are preserving the human stories behind Christchurch’s historical buildings on their website for future generations to enjoy. Photo: Gina McKenzie

IT will be disappointing for many readers to see our front page story and learn of the unhappy situation that exists between this city’s professional firefighters and their management, more so the regional management. The firefighters were among the heroes of February 22 when the earthquake tumbled the CTV and PGC buildings and caused widespread havoc around the city. I spoke with one firefighter who, with others, crawled into the CTV and PGC buildings during the evening of February 22 and helped bring out people alive. He recalled seeing dangling limbs, charred bodies and other gruesome sights and in the course of the rescue attempts, large aftershocks were still pounding the shattered hulks of the buildings. He said the noise in the bowels of the PGC destruction was “horrendous” as clouds of dust fell, beams pressed against his back and the jumble of desks, masonry and other debris moved like a rolling ocean. It was a corner of hell. This firefighter went above and beyond the call of duty.

When he said, therefore, that there was a problem within this city’s fire service in terms of the relationship between staff and management you felt he had earned the right to speak out. You sat up and took note. In his inquiry report into the February 22 earthquake the NZ Fire Service’s national commander Mike Hall stated that after interviewing staff around Christchurch’s metropolitan stations it was found there was “a significant disconnect between regional and area management and staff.” He said it was essential that a review of the management structure was undertaken. Speaking to the Assistant National Commander Trevor Brown on Monday, however, he advised me that most of the concerns were “historic” and as a result of some rejigging of roles, a review was not urgently required. He could not state whether a review would even go ahead or not. That was disappointing. I would say a review is required, preferably by an independent body, and the sooner the better.

First cruise ship arrives in Akaroa CANTERBURY’S cruise ship season gets underway today with the first of 80 ships, the Sea Princess, arriving in Akaroa this morning, bringing with it the promise of a much needed boost to the tourism industry. A SHARED interest in local history and a desire to preserve the personal stories behind Christchurch’s earthquake damaged historical buildings inspired Wendy Riley and Helen Solomons to set up their “Lost Christchurch” website. “Having worked in three different historical buildings I felt like a part of me didn’t exist anymore when they were lost in the earthquake,” Ms Riley said. “It’s more than the buildings. It’s the human imprint that had been created over the last 150 years.” Ms Riley’s graphic design business which occupied the old Weekly Press building in City Mall was destroyed in February’s earthquake while Mrs Solomons had a lucky escape from a nearby building. The pair began collating personal stories of Christchurch’s historical buildings on their site and were surprised by many of the tales they uncovered. “You come across fascinating stories about the people who lived and worked in these buildings. “Some are even a bit scandalous.

first impression on the region. “The township will host tens of thousands of cruise ship passengers over the coming months so it is going to be an extremely busy time for the shops, cafes, galleries and restaurants but they’ve been busy preparing for the influx and they’re rearing to go.” In anticipation of the cruise ship season, extra funding has been put into boosting visitor services in the area.

“It’s so important to preserve our cultural identity by keeping these memories alive for future generations to enjoy,” Mrs Solomons said. Both women believed collating the stories had helped them deal with the sense of loss they have felt since February. “Seeing history come alive again and knowing that we are doing something to help has been really helpful. “It has been a connection to both the past and the future.” Mrs Riley said the website was still evolving and she hoped it would grow as more people submitted their own stories. Ask the Mayor Do you think Sir Bob Jones should keep out of our discussion on the central city rebuild and what do you think of his views that the CBD cannot realistically be rebuilt? The draft Central City Plan is at this stage a first discussion document based on the 106,000 ideas that came forward from Christchurch residents. When we sought feedback from the community on the draft Plan, we received around 5000 comments from nearly 3000 people and groups

. Nothing proposed in this draft plan is set in concrete and during the hearings’ process over the next two weeks the council is listening to all views and genuinely wants to make a decision which benefits all sectors of the community. I welcome any comments on our draft and I am pleased that Sir Bob Jones with his experience as a property investor has taken an interest in the rebuild of our city. Many of the concerns he

raises about our future challenges are valid and some of his ideas, such as filling the gaps left by some of the demolished buildings with gardens, are already reflected in the draft plan. What has come through in the initial ideas and again in the submissions on the draft is a real desire in our community to embrace the redevelopment of the Central City and be part of its future. Our community is

telling us that there is a wonderful opportunity to build something exciting, different and new. New investment will be attracted to Christchurch given the nature of the rebuild that is about to be undertaken in Christchurch, and the fact that in 10 to 15 years Christchurch will be one of the most modern and vibrant cities in Australasia. THE organiser of the Connecting Canterbury event, which finished at The Cloud on Auckland’s waterfront on Monday, says it achieved what it set out to. An estimated 1000 people flowed through the distinctive building each hour, most of them tourists but also businesspeople and investors. Small businesses feel left out Tom Doudney

SMALL business owners in Canterbury felt left out of an Auckland event promoting Canterbury business but those involved say there was no need to. Connecting Canterbury was held in the Cloud in Auckland from last Wednesday until Monday over the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals weekend that Canterbury would have hosted. A number of Canterbury businesses such as Hamilton Jet, NZ Merino and ARC Innovations were on display to showcase business innovation in the region. Several small business owners posted comments on the Rise Up Christchurch Facebook page to say they had not been invited to the event and were concerned that only larger businesses were being given a helping hand. One of those was Ingrid Willis, who wrote that she was a small business owner with seven staff doing it tough and had not heard of the event. “[We] have had no help from government, and the insurance battle continues”. Speaking to Mainland Press, CTV chairman Nick Smith said the Canterbury based TV station had not initially been invited to attend the event, although that

Young Cantabrians take a break IT will be smiles all round for 250 young Cantabrians when they head off for Youthtown’s Break from the Quake camps in the North Island next week. The second group of 10 to 17-year-olds to escape from the city in the school holidays on the programme, they will be based at three locations – Auckland, Hunua and Huntly where they will take part in a variety of activities. These will include a day at the Rainbow’s End theme park in Auckland. “The focus for the camps is to give these children a well-deserved ‘break from the quake’ and we hope this week’s campers will take just as much away from their experiences as our first week of campers did,” Youthtown CEO Keith Thorpe said. To ensure continuity of care, specially selected supervisors and caregivers will accompany the campers on the trip.

We’re the only visual media and have been through a lot and have a very strong base of Auckland support.” Canterbury Development Corporation Rugby World Cup Christchurch manager and event organiser Ann Hindson said people should be aware the event had been pre-organised as a business innovation showcase so there had not been an opportunity for trades or other sectors to take part. “There is no opportunity to put up small business, there is no sales, it is really just a business innovation showcase.” However, Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend, who was on the governance board for the event, said it was not exclusively about business innovation and businesses of any size were more than welcome. “We just want people to use that opportunity to establish relationships, that’s what it’s all about.”

“The crime rate has dropped because the criminals who normally inhabit the city are now in Rangiora. They are sent there to attend court and take the opportunity to commit crime while there.”

“I think that crime has gone up in some ways. A lot of shops and houses that have been abandoned since the quake look as if they have been looted.”

“It could be due to an increased sense of community through a shared experience.”

“People’s minds have been preoccupied and they have had other issues to be concerned with, like survival. There has been a bigger police presence, certainly in Riccarton.”

THEY may be competing for votes, but the two leading election candidates for Waimakariri agree unanimously on one thing - earthquake recovery is the most significant issue for their constituents. Incumbent Labour Party MP Clayton Cosgrove, 41, has held the seat since 1999, retaining it by only 390 votes at the last election - the second narrowest margin in the country. Mr Cosgrove said he would be out to re-prove himself to the people of Waimakariri. “I start campaigning and working for the people the day after the last election. “I have a very old-fashioned view that the first and last duty of a constituent member of parliament is to look after and protect the local people.” National Party candidate Kate Wilkinson, 54, said she had always wanted to be the electorate MP, and got a lot of satisfaction out of helping the community. “With Clayton having the smallest Labour majority in the country, of course I’m targeting the electorate vote. To a certain extent the campaign never stops, to the extent that every day I’m out there trying to do the best for the constituents.”

Earthquake recovery topped the list of major issues for both candidates. Mr Cosgrove, who is also the Labour Party spokesperson for earthquake recovery, said that for most affected residents, nothing has really changed. “We’ve got hundreds, and I mean hundreds of earthquake constituent open case files in our office,” he said. Ms Wilkinson said she would be looking to continue the progress made by the National Party on earthquake recovery. “We’ve got residents who have to leave their quake-stricken homes, and find replacement homes, and so my priority is to walk with them throughout the long journey,” she said. New Zealand First Party candidate Richard Prosser, 44, said his campaign was primarily concerned with winning the party vote. “Essentially we’re basing our campaign around the New Zealand economy, and our young people, New Zealand’s assets, and the gold card,” he said. While local issues like the earthquake recovery were important for the people of Waimakariri, Mr Prosser said national issues were also at the forefront of his campaign. “I think, personally, the things that are important to Waimak people are important to the people round the country.”

Water restrictions in force in Christchurch The infrastructure required to pump water around Christchurch City and Lyttelton Harbour communities has been severely damaged by earthquakes over the last 12 months. Christchurch City and Lyttelton Harbour residents need to reduce their outdoor water consumption now, to ensure the Council can supply residents with the drinking water they need as summer approaches. If residents do not comply with the Level 3 restrictions now in place, total outdoor watering bans may have to be imposed for Christchurch City and Lyttelton Harbour basin.

Outdoor water conservation tips ⋅ Use mulch to keep your garden cool and moist. ⋅ Water the garden at cooler times of the day, in the morning or evening, to minimise evaporation and water wastage. ⋅ Avoid watering in a Nor’west wind as it quickly evaporates the water. ⋅ Do not hose down paths and driveways; use a broom. ⋅ Spreading a layer of organic mulch around plants retains moisture and saves water, time and money. ⋅ Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, and then reuse it to water plants. ⋅ When cleaning out fish tanks, give the nutrient-rich water to your plants. ⋅ Consult with your local nursery for information on plant selection and placement for optimum outdoor water savings. ⋅ Wash your car with a bucket of water on the lawn and you’ll water your lawn at the same time. ⋅ Wash your pets outdoors in an area of your lawn that needs water

What do Level 3 water restrictions mean? ∧ Unattended hoses, sprinklers and garden irrigation systems are not permitted at any time. ∧ No outdoor water use on Mondays. ∧ Even numbered properties (e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8) handheld (e.g. hand-held hoses, watering cans) watering only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. ∧ Odd numbered properties (e.g. 3, 5, 7, 9) - handheld (e.g. hand-held hoses, watering cans) watering only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

No outdoor water use on Mondays

∧ Car washing is permitted on the allocated day. * Please note these restrictions do not apply to residents with private water supplies e.g. private wells, nor do they apply to industries where water is required for production. We do ask that such industries conserve water where possible and minimise water wastage. Businesses that operate on residential properties, for example gardening or landscaping companies, do have to abide by the water restrictions. This means they can only use water on the days allocated to their clients’ residential properties.

Canterbury on display With a strong line up of exhibitors, including She Chocolat, Wines of Canterbury and several local artisans, the Presenting Canterbury festival in North Hagley Park is offering more entertainment to local residents and visitors during the final two weeks of Rugby World Cup 2011. The Festival is operating daily now through to Sunday 23 October, 11am to 5pm in the area across from the Fanzone with retail stalls, face painting, a bouncy castle, court jesters, buskers and dance acts. Christchurch City Council Marketing Manager Richard Stokes says the event is designed to give locals and visitors the opportunity to taste and experience what is on offer in Canterbury. “We decided to make the stands free of charge for Canterbury businesses – so it’s also a nice opportunity to support the local retail, arts and tourism industries at a time when things are a bit tough,” he says. Entertainment also includes morning puppet shows, celebrity chef cooking demonstrations at midday and 2pm daily and live music acts in the afternoons.

Final Outwits performances this week ∧ The final performances of the Outwits’ Complete History of World Rugby (abridged) are tonight, tomorrow and Friday, 6pm at the Fanzone in North Hagley Park. Be entertained as the Outwits romp through the history of world rugby, tackling its greatest achievements, players, officials, coaches and tragedies in a fast-paced, action-packed show.

Outside looking in: Doug Couch’s Rapaki home still contains the two rocks which caused carnage inside. Inset: No barrier: The Rhodes’ former house proved no obstacle for the boulder which passed straight through it on February 22. Photos: Tom Doudney

Couple keen to return to Rapaki The small Lyttelton Harbour settlement of Rapaki, with a population of around 100 and 40 homes, is still in the Port Hills white zone area. Boulders from the hills above pose safety questions and contribute to uncertainty for those below. Tom Doudney reports.

FOR many people, one of the most memorable images from February 22, outside of the CBD, remains that of a house in Rapaki with a boulder-shaped hole through the middle, the size of a small truck. Today that house is gone but the hills above the small settlement are still scattered with several similarsized boulders, their passage down the slope mercifully halted - at least for now. Although it has been six months since the house was demolished, owners Peter and Nikki Rhodes are still, like many Port Hills residents, in limbo. “We don’t know what is happening with the land because it’s still in the white zone and we still don’t know what’s going to happen with insurance,” Mrs Rhodes said. The couple are now staying at Living Springs in Allandale, where Mrs Rhodes works. Although she

sais she wouldn’t feel safe returning at the moment, they are leaving the door open for the future. Mr Rhodes’ grandfather, George M. M. Couch, built the house and three generations of his family had lived there since. “It was more than just a house, it had a bit more meaning to them than that,” she said. The couple are not alone in their earthquake-forced exile from Rapaki – in fact, it’s a bit of a family affair. Many decades ago, Mr Couch had subdivided a larger section on the settlement’s upper western slope, which included the Rhodes’ property, into individual parcels for his family. Now it is largely his children and grandchildren’s homes that have either been demolished or are unliveable. One of those children was Doug Couch, also Mr Rhodes’ uncle, as

well as a former Banks Peninsula councillor and local community board member. He and his wife Elaine have just moved into a house in Cashmere after spending the past six months at a variety of temporary residences. The couple fled their house after the February 22 earthquake, getting out just before the first big aftershock sent two large rocks crashing in through the lounge roof and the bedroom walls. The rocks are still there, but the couple still aren’t allowed back inside and haven’t been able to claim on even their contents’ insurance. “We’ve got two rolling stones there and they’re not paying any rent,” Doug Couch said. He hopes to move back at some stage, but expects it could be years before they are allowed to build there again.

Time bank to host hui in Lyttelton MEMBERS of the Lyttelton Time Bank will be sharing their expertise with others from around the country at a hui they are hosting this weekend. It will be the first conference of its kind to be held in New Zealand, hui organiser Bettina Evans said. “The Lyttelton Time Bank is the largest and the oldest in the country, with 400 members. There are other much smaller time banks around the country, which can be quite isolated from each other, so we decided to invite them here to share our experiences, let them know how it all works and the pitfalls they can face,” Ms Evans said.

Trave l E xpo! We invite you to join APX Harvey World Travel for drinks, nibbles and an informative travel evening.

“If we can all help each other it will make it much easier for them to develop their time banks.” The hui is being held at Lyttelton West School, starting on Friday night with a meet and greet. A dinner and social event with live music is planned for Saturday night. “The public are welcome to join us on Saturday night from 8pm, but we would like people to let us know if they are coming so we know how many to expect,” Ms Evans said. Coolstore to go ahead after boaties’ needs met

Quakes and snow stymie Big Morning Tea fundraiser CHOLMONDELEY’S annual Big Morning Tea fundraiser held in August was not as successful as the organisation had hoped it would be. The event raised a total of $12,000, which was less than the

$20,000 budget, fundraising manager Sarah Barrer said. The earthquakes and a drop in registration had made a difference,” she said.

A NEW fish coolstore at Lyttelton Port is expected to go ahead after concerns over boating safety and public access to the inner harbour were alleviated. The 5000 square metre Independent Fisheries’ coolstore is needed to replace a previous facility which was damaged in the September and February earthquakes. It will provide for the processing of in excess of 30,000 tonnes of fish and provide around 40 jobs on site. Although the plan is to build it mostly on port company land, it also required the stopping of public roads Cyrus William Quay and George Seymour Quay. The Lyttelton Mt Herbert Community Board had initially given its approval, but then decided to reconsider the issue due to concerns that road stopping would block public access to the inner harbour and also because of Lyttelton Port Company’s refusal to guarantee permanent public access to a slipway.

The slipway was the only safe landing point in the area for recreational boat users caught in a southerly squall. However community board chairperson Paula Smith said that changes to the area of road to be stopped, leaving public access intact and the understanding that boat users could continue using the slipway, had cleared the way for the board’s approval. Lyttelton Port Company chief executive Peter Davies said he was delighted with the board’s decision. “The point of difference [over slipway access] was that we were prepared to put in place an agreement for ten years and the council was looking for permanency and I think we both agree that we need to find good long term solutions for boating in the harbour.” Naval Point Club manager Ken Camp said he was pleased that access to the slipway had been maintained.

HE never wanted to do an autobiography, but for television televisio journalist Mike McRoberts, writing an account of his career so far has reminded him why he does the job – it’s a privilege to tell stories. Mr McRoberts has shared the stories behind the stories he had covered over the past decade in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, China and Haiti Hait in his first book, Beyond the Front Line. He had just signed the contract to write it when the February 22 earthquake struck Christchurch, where he grew up. He spent three weeks broadcasting from the city and an as he returned to Auckland, Japan’s earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster was uunfolding. “I sent a text message to my boss – ‘Japan?’ When he landed at Auckland airport he went stra straight from domestic arrivals to international departures, with the same bag of dirty cclothes. Twenty four hours after broadcasting from Bealey Avenue, he was presenting the news from Tokyo. With all that has happened iin on the past year it’s a wonder the 3News and 60 Minute Minutes journalist, husband and father of two had time to write wri a book. “It was tough; I just ju had to basically chain myself to the computer. However he found it a cathartic experience, fou although he had to address some things which he had forgotten about for a reason. “I was a sad figure at a one point sitting in tears at the computer by myself in the t middle of the night. It’s hard to believe that a year ago, Mr McRoberts was considering doing something somethi completely different from journalism. “Writing the book reminded remind me how much I like this job and telling stories stor and it’s been a really good shot in the arm a for me. “I just hope when people read it they h get a better bet understanding of who I am and my motivations for things. Repairing our water supply networks

but in reality bringing water to your tap requires a sophisticated network of pipes and systems. The earthquakes have given the city’s water supply a bit of a hammering: destroying and damaging wells, making 124 km of water mains unusable and badly damaging some of the main water reservoirs. Fulton Hogan, as part of the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team is repairing and rebuilding our water reservoirs so our city’s water supply can meet demand. A reservoir is used to store groundwater from wells. Stored water is piped by pumps and gravity to water mains for use as drinking water.

Grace gave up her hair last Friday in support of Child Cancer Foundation Day. Children bought donations to support Grace and from her friends at school in Bishopdale she raised $385.90. Friends and family at home donated an extra $150, bringing the total to $535.90. Grace and her teacher, Miss Green, created posters and handed out notices to the whole school. Miss Green had the honour of shaving Grace’s hair off in front of more than 200 children and teachers as well as her parents who came to support their brave daughter. Gracie said her mother’s friend had cancer and she had wanted to help out somehow. “I am so amazed that everyone came to support me,” she said.

THINGS didn’t start quite according to plan, in fact, ten minutes into the game they got sidelined. But with a little ingenuity and a lot of duct tape, a group of engineering students eventually managed to impress crowds on Auckland’s waterfront with their robotic kicking machine. The University of Canterbury students were taking part in the Connecting Canterbury showcase at The Cloud on Queens Wharf by demonstrating the invention. The machine, which the students joked could be the solution to Dan Carter’s kicking woes, faltered on its first attempt, so they took it aside for some adjustments. “We pushed the button and nothing really happened

and so we pushed a different button and something happened, it actually did kick it and it went all of about 10 metres or so,” robotics society member George Buchanan said. “We just flew it up this morning and we’ve had a few technical problems, it was shaking around a bit in the plane, not just the earthquakes, and so it’s not going as well as we anticipated,” Mr Buchanan said, as his teammates fussed with wires and pieces of rubber. Persistence paid off and an hour later the robot was ready to go, successfully booting the ball with the touch of a button. “What a relief, it feels like Dan Carter suddenly got his injury fixed,” Mr Buchanan said.

EQC is in the process of completing assessments of all earthquake damaged homes on a suburbby-suburb basis to make sure all Canterbury properties are seen by Christmas. This geographic approach follows our ‘worst-ďŹ rst’ strategy, where EQC assessed severely damaged properties ďŹ rst. Trotting club records operating surplus THE New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club (NZMTC) has recorded an operating surplus of $550,111 being for the 2010/11 season. The audited group surplus for the season was $11.575 million once the property investment operating result, insurance proceeds, fair value gains on investment property and net losses on disposals of plant and

equipment were factored in. NZMTC chairman David Rankin said that the trading result was a fantastic turnaround for the club and one that had been driven by a significant increase in catering, functions and events revenues, increased rental income and a healthy return from the 2011 Inter Dominion Championships.

then decided to restart her store which operates on weekends. “With Christmas coming up I thought it was time to be positive and start off again.” Ms Bliss said the suburban location of her store allowed people to avoid traffic congestion and she had a unique twist to offer customers. “I’m a dog lover so people can bring their dog along for a walk and I have some dog biscuits on hand to keep them happy.”

SIAN Bliss hopes the Arts Centre will reopen again but in the meantime her revamped Casebrook garage captures the spirit of her former iconic craft store. Ms Bliss had been operating Cottage Crafts in the Arts Centre for over 22 years when the February earthquake struck. “I really miss the family-like atmosphere. “Everyone knew each other and it had such a creative spirit.” After the earthquake Ms Bliss spent a few months with family in Wales and

Dolls to lift children’s spirits New friend: Kyla Wichman, 2, plays with one of the dolls donated to New Brighton Community Preschool and Nursery donated by the Kiwanis – a charitable organisation dedicated to improving quality of life for children and communities. Takapuna Kiwanis club members Patsy and Mike Hill, and Julia Soo drove from Auckland to Christchurch with more than 1000 dolls to donate to Christchurch children. The Kiwanis often make trauma dolls for hospitals and Mrs Hill had come up with the idea of making more colourful dolls for Christchurch children as a way to lift spirits after the earthquake. The idea quickly took off with club members from throughout the North Island, New Caledonia and Tahiti contributing. Mrs Hills said handing the dolls to the children had been a lovely experience. “Some little girls had to have matching pink dolls because they wanted their dolls to be friends. Another little group had got names for them in a couple of seconds. Addington Plunket, The Champions Centre Canterbury and CCS Disability Action were amongst the places to receive dolls.

The new hair salon is a wonderful des na on to relax in Be warmly welcomed and feel at home in the private and relaxing new salon of Strands Hair . A er being forced out of their premises in Lichfield Street with the February earthquake, owner Michael Hope and his staff have built a new stylish salon in a co age on Greers Road, Bishopdale. The move has paid off. Michael has no regrets as both exis ng and new clients are loving the new salon at 478 Greers Road, Bishopdale. “ Since we opened here in July, the salon has been a sought-a er des na on,” says Michael. “ Many of our customers are s ll very wary about spending me in the shopping malls and busy retail areas, they feel safe here and able to relax and enjoy ge ng their hair done.” Even though Strands Hair is now based on a busy road, it does not affect the salon at all. The co age has been built so that it faces away from the street giving clients complete privacy . Clients can relax on the sunny deck or amongst the colourful garden in the salon courtyard away from the hustle and bustle of the street noise. Plenty of off-street parking makes access easy. Michael has been a hairdresser for 30 years and his exper se is in demand. Aside from working in his busy salon, he also is involved in outside staff training in other salons. So far Michael has trained 28 Christchurch appren ces who are now qualified senior staff in salons throughout Christchurch and New Zealand. While cut and colour is Strands Hair’s core business, they do all aspects of hairdressing. So, as well as offering an amazing array of quality service, Strands Hair has the very latest technology to ensure that you have the unique look you seek, and it’s this standard that makes Strands Hair so popular. Relax at Strands Hair knowing you are in fantas c hands.

WITH WEARABLE ART

For something a li le different at the Ellesmere Show, check out the Art of Sewing Wearable Art compe on. The works of art on display will provide crea ve interpreta ons of the show’s theme of ‘Going with the grain’ This year is the interna onal year of the forest and the Wearable Art entrants have designed garments which aim to celebrate the tree and its importance to Canterbury, using the rich colours and textures from our na ve and exo c forests. There are three sec ons in this year’s compe on: Wearable Art, the Art Bra and Make and Model. The compe on’s final judging will take place on the Osborne Stage at 1.30pm.

COOKING SKILLS ON SHOW

The popularity of television cooking shows has led the organisers of the Ellesmere Show to hold their own local celebrity cook-off.

The CRT Muster Chef compe on, which will take place in the show’s main feature tent, kicks off with a food demonstra on and tas ng hosted by chef and food extraordinaire Paul Robinson, from Food Solu ons and CPIT, at 1030, followed by the first heat star ng at 1100. The six local celebri es taking part are Selwyn MP Amy Adams, Leeston Consolidated School principal Linda Taylor, Canterbury rugby legend and former All Black Fergie McCormick, local personality and Selwyn District councillor Pat McEvedy, Southbridge School principal Wendy Huriwai and Canterbury ITM Cup rugby player Joe Moody. They will par cipate in three heats, with their efforts judged by the crowd present in conjunc on with Mr Robinson, ahead of the final at 1.30pm. The winner of the compe on, and first ever Ellesmere Show CRT Muster Chef tle holder, will be announced at the start of the Grand Parade, in which they will take part. Mr Robinson hoped the cook-off would become an annual event and encourage young people to learn about where their food was coming from. “Just cracking a local egg, a farm raised egg, something has been looked a er and fed well, how nourishing that is and how it looks when you crack it open… we need to teach our children that because they are going to teach the next genera on,” he said. Come on down to the CRT Muster Chef kitchen on show day to see if the local poli cians, sports people and principals can take the heat!

Planning your Race Day outfit can be a chore and a half, especially when you have to consider a hat or fascinator. Do you get the dress and endeavor on a quest to find a matching fascinator, or the other way around? Fear not. There is another way to be the leader of the fashion pack. The team at Strands Hair encourage you to step outside the norm and make yourself the statement piece. Let your hair be fascinating. Exaggerate the texture, pump up the volume and add size with quality hair pieces or curls of various sizes for a natural effect.

This year, it’s all about tumbling romantic curls, soft vintage waves or springy bouncy curls that will complement the outfits on show. Include some loose fishtail braids into the mess of curls for a relaxed boho feel. If you are planning to wear classic or tight dresses, then go straight and intense at the roots with your hair, and then add a change of pace to the look with a bundle of floaty curls. Talk to your stylist about the new Cloud Nine wand, if you are wanting curls that will last their way through a champagne breakfast and, of course, the after-party!

But customers can be assured Park Avenue Fashions will continue to be an elite shopping destination. Sonia knows she has heavy shoes to fill with her mother retiring, but is looking forward to the challenge of it all. She is also happy they have now based themselves at Lincoln Road. “It’s a vibrant place and an up-and-coming area to be in, says Sonia. Park Avenue Fashions will be open by the middle of October, but customers need not worry if they are wanting to find that special outfit to wear now. They have exclusive rights in the South Island to Auckland designer Kevin Moore, who is well known for his mother of the bride and mother of the groom garments and for his special occasion wear, especially his silk dresses. Schwass said he was genuinely passionate about suppor ng his region. “What I love about Canterbury is the people – their ability to adapt to new challenges and to see the posi ve in o en very nega ve situa ons. I love the rural connec on the city has with its country cousins. Canterbury is my home and produces the best food I have had the pleasure to prepare in my 25 years of professional cooking,” Mr Schwass said. “Cooking with local ingredients is important to me because it supports the small farmers and gives them and their families a future. It is a great way to connect with the season of the region and help to nurture the blossoming food culture we have. Ul mately it just tastes better to cook with food sourced as close to the stove as possible.” Farmers’ Markets NZ is promo ng the shows as part of the REAL New Zealand Fes val 2011, to encourage people to spend money in New Zealand. Farmers’ Markets NZ chairperson Chris Fortune said that “suppor ng farmers’ markets means suppor ng local producers and communi es, developing rela onships between both producers and consumers.”

Wheatgrass not the health food it’s claimed to be Until now, wheatgrass has been touted as a drug-free cure-all – from an energy booster and weight-loss aid to a reliever of joint pain and a cure for cancer. But the grass isn’t as green as some wheatgrass proponents would have you believe. In a recent article, health writer Shiree Schumacher revealed some juice bars were misleading consumers with claims that don’t stack up. “The major claim we found astounding is the one you see on signs outside some juice bars – they claim one 30ml shot of wheatgrass is nutritionally equivalent to two kilograms of vegetables. “It’s repeated on internet sites and a popular juice bar promotes its

How to make it

Use a sharp knife to score both sides of the steak in a criss-cross pattern. Do not cut all the way through. Mix together the paprika, Mexican chilli powder, oil, brown sugar and lime or lemon rind and massage into both sides of the steak. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for one hour or overnight. Heat a dash of oil in a heavy-based frying pan or grill pan. Add the steak to the hot pan and cook three to four minutes each side. Remove from the pan and allow to rest while finishing the salad. Add the peppers to the pan and cook only

wheatgrass shots with this information – it’s simply not true and not by a long shot. If you’re relying on wheatgrass as your sole source of greens, it’s not only costing you money, you’re also selling yourself short in the nutrition department.” The article also looked at the claim that the health benefits of wheatgrass were mainly due to it being 70 per cent chlorophyll, and traced its history to weed out the truth behind some nutritional claims. “We found that clinical trials on wheatgrass are sparse at best, and yet you’ll see internet sites claiming it is ‘packed’ and ‘abundant’ with supposedly healthy attributes.”

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN To coincide with the school holidays Rowan Atkinson’s spy spoof, Johnny English is back. Johnny English first came to our screens back in 2003 when quelle horreur there was a French pretender to the British throne. Since then, we learn that English been in a self-imposed exile in Tibet for five years after an ‘incident’ in which the president of Mozambique was assassinated under his watch. But when MI7 uncovers a plot to kill the Chinese Premier, England’s ‘greatest spy’ gets the call back. A few things have changed in those five years. There’s a new boss, Pegasus (Gillian Anderson), a behavioral psychologist Kate, (the lovely Rosamond Pike) and a very useful sidekick, Agent Tucker (Daniel Kaluuya). The storyline draws on a host of Bond classics (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service comes to mind). Spies, counter spies and double crossings, a rooftop chase across Hong Kong, some high speed snowmobile action and cablecar fighting in the Swiss alps, and

a rather nice new voice-activated Rolls Royce. And of course a host of fancy new gadgets, hardly any of which English can handle. The plot doesn’t offers up any surprises, but there are plenty of laughs, as Atkinson delivers in his uniquely rubber-faced deadpan style. And that’s what we’re there for, not for the storyline, but because Rowan Atkinson is still one of the most consistently funny men out there. His humour has the ability to cross generations, and unlike many of his contemporaries who have turned to drama or documentary, Atkinson is still making us laugh. Yet all too often he gets trotted out to perform another funny cameo, which seems both a waste of talent and a bit tedious. But when he takes centre stage as he does here, and his true genius is allowed to shine, it’s easy to see there is no-one else who can simultaneously be debonair, suave and a bumbling idiot like he can. That combination adds up to a jolly good laugh.

TWO of Christchurch’s musical institutions will share the stage for the first time next month, blending pop and choral singing to raise funds for the ChristChurch Cathedral. The Feelers and the ChristChurch Cathedral Choir will play the benefit concert to be held at Christ’s College on November 11. Feelers lead singer James Reid said it had been hard watching the events of February 22 unfold in his home city from his current base in Auckland. “For me, the cathedral has always been the heart of our city and it seems fitting that through music we can help to rebuild it.” The band was looking forward to seeing some of its songs reworked with a classical twist. “It’s just a process of ironing out all the defects and making an interesting show.” The choir’s director of music Brian Law said he was looking forward to working with the band. “This is a first for the choir and will be a radical departure from our usual style. Choir member Kane Jones, 9, said it was going to be “awesome” performing with The Feelers but the coolest part would be “fundraising for the ChristChurch Cathedral.” The idea of the concert originated from a discussion between Mr Reid and his sister Rebecca Stewart,

Frontman: The Feelers singer James Reid says the band is looking forward to playing with the ChristChurch Cathedral Choir.

whose son Jono is a member of the choir. Mr Reid said the possibility of filming the performance for a dvd was also being looked at.

Athletics goes from rubber to grass

This is how you do it: Coach Bill Watt instructs his athletes at the Rawhiti track.

Aiming high: A high jumper zeroes in on his target at Rawhiti.

Chris Tobin

WITH QE2 stadium’s two all-weather tracks now resembling carpeted sandhills, Christchurch’s athletes will be stepping back in time this season. They will return to the days when grass was the main surface used for inter-club competition and will be based at a new location - the New Brighton Athletic Club’s track in Rawhiti Domain. Co-chair of Athletics Canterbury’s Sports Recovery Group John McBrearty hoped the loss of QE2 would not set the sport back and it was too early to know what impact it would have on athlete numbers. The season starts on Saturday. “We’ll also be going to Timaru which has an all-weather track every three weeks or so throughout the season.” Some upgrading of the domain facility will be necessary – the recovery group wants three

new throwing circles, a 70m long jump/ triple jump runway, toilet facilities and a temporary storage shed installed. Mondo, the sports rubber surface company which will provide and lay out the main stadium track for the 2012 London Olympics, has provided some of its rubber surface from Olympic Park, Melbourne. “We’ll be paying for the adhesive and laying it down,” McBrearty said. The total cost of upgrading the Rawhiti track will be $100,000, half of which has come from the sport while the remainder will be provided via grants. How long Athletics Canterbury will run its inter-club competitions at Rawhiti is unknown. “It could be five years,” McBrearty said. “We hope it won’t be but we’ve got to be realistic.”

It’s not just about losing inches

New Brighton club captain Pat Boland said the club had recently merged with Olympic and would become New Brighton Olympic Athletic Club. “The newly revitalised club is looking forward to sharing the track with the wider athletic community and we’re excited by Athletics Canterbury’s recently released long term strategic plan to restore athletic facilities in the short and longer term. “The improvements to the Rawhiti track will contribute to that plan and also leave a legacy to the eastern suburbs for years to come.” Athletics New Zealand has thrown its support behind getting the sport back on its feet in the city with the appointment of former city athlete Terry Lomax, of Wellington, as the Athletics NZ Christchurch recovery manager to work with Athletics Canterbury.

Olympian transfers south Beijing Olympic Games heptathlete Rebecca Wardell, who competed for the Old Boys United club in Christchurch, is one elite athlete who has relocated out of the city because of the loss of QE2. Since August she has been living and training in Dunedin in her bid to win selection for the London Olympics. “Needing an all-weather surface prompted my move and training on grass was not an option for me,” she said. “I’m loving Dunedin. Everything is only five minutes away, I’ve been able to find work and I have a good support network.” She thought athletics would struggle at the elite level in Christchurch for the next few years but “children’s athletics will go ahead as it has always done.”
