Northlands and counting Paper Plus Northlands, celebrates 30 years of business in the local community. Owner Jeff Raines and business partner Derek Anderson opened the Northland Book Centre in 1981. The original location of the store was approximately where McDonalds is today, with a floor space of 3500 square feet and six staff employed. Today it is located at The Warehouse end of the Mall with 10 staff being employed. Thirty years on, the mix of product sold at Paper Plus Northlands is still the same in most areas but technology items are an increasing part of the business. Books are changing with the advent of ebooks, but there will always be a place for the popular paperback. The range of products back in the early days was mostly books and stationery, with greeting cards being among the most popular items. The most sought after item these days is any book or calendar on Christchurch or the earthquakes. The recent earthquakes did very little damage to the store, but there was an increase in business, as they have ‘adopted’ many new customers whose regular bookstores were damaged or closed by the quakes. The business first became a Paper Plus store in the 1990s, but in 2000 it changed to ‘Books and More’. ‘Books and More’ ceased to exist as a group when it was purchased by Paper Plus, so another change

came about, this time to ‘Take Note’ (part of the Paper Plus Group). When the newlook Paper Plus was launched in 2009, Jeff knew it was the right time to change back to Paper Plus, making that change official in October 2009. Since 2007 Paper Plus Northlands has no longer been a Post Shop. However, they still sell stamps, pre-paid courier bags, and have a post box at the rear of the shop which is cleared Monday – Friday at 6pm. At the 2011 Paper Plus Conference, Paper Plus Northlands received the Paper Plus Flybuys Customer Loyalty Award, and was also a finalist in the Book Sales Award, and Overall Store of the Year award. This was a great testament to the commitment and dedication of the team at Paper Plus. Paper Plus Northlands is a family owned and operated business. Over these 30 years in business, all of Jeff’s children have worked there at some stage, with three family members currently working there, and with Jared, the youngest of three sons, having recently bought in to the business it will be a family business for some time to come. So come in, get a deal, and celebrate 30 years of business with Jeff, Jared and the team at Paper Plus Northlands, the place for all your book and stationery needs.

A special place to remember Chris Tobin

MARK Maynard, husband of Kelly Maynard who lost her life in the February 22 earthquake, is taking up a Christchurch City Council offer of interring his late wife’s ashes in a special interment site at Avonhead Cemetery. The council is building an interment site for unidentified victims of the earthquake who will be buried in a centre circle. Outside this area, plots have been set aside for named victims where families can place their loved ones’ ashes. Other quake victim families are expected to take up the offer. Mr Maynard considered the site with lawns and a centrepiece circle area would become a special place that would be well maintained. “I saw a sketch of the plans of what they’re doing and it looks good. It’ll be good to have a place to visit. Mr Maynard’s wife Kelly, 43, died in the PGC building when it collapsed on February 22. Mrs Maynard had just re-entered the workforce and was in her fourth day at Perpetual Trust. She should have been on her 12.30-1pm lunch break at the time the quake struck at 12.51pm but had returned to work. She was among 17 victims who died in the building. “You just keep trucking on, Mr Maynard said of how he and his two young children Molly, 4, and Matilda, 3, are coping without their wife

and mother. “The kids are adjusting OK. They’re young enough to get through things a bit easier. We went with other quake families to meet the All Blacks and spent an hour with them. “Sonny Bill Williams picked Matilda up and had her on his shoulders. When it was announced the interment site would be built Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said it would have a great emotional significance for victims’ families. “This special interment site will provide a place for everyone, in their own time, to remember those lost and reach a sense of peace as we move together through the grieving process. Four victims of the February 22 earthquake were unidentified, all of whom died in the CTV building. They were CTV employees Valeri Volnov, 41, and Shawn Lucas, Philippines nurse Rhea Mae Sumalpong, 25, and King’s Education director of studies, Elsa Torres De Frood, 53. The council said planting would now start at the site; footpaths, artwork and furniture would be installed next month. The project should be completed sometime between December 5 and 7. The interment site will be open to the public and is separate to the Canterbury Earthquake Memorial as proposed in the Central City Rebuild Plan.

CBD bus tour details sketchy

CHRISTCHURCH people keen to get into the CBD red zone still have no idea where the tickets for the planned bus tours will be available from and how much they will cost. Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) said the 30-minute tours would start on November 5, run on Saturdays and Sundays and leave from Cranmer Square. However, the logistics of how the 3000 people expected to take the tour every weekend would be handled was still to be worked out. A spokesperson for Cera told Mainland Press a meeting with the various parties involved was to be held some time this week.

Iconic retail store not going anywhere BALLANTYNES managing director Mary Devine has scotched suggestions that the popular department store might move to another location outside the central city, as a recent report indicated. “Richard (Richard Ballantyne, the store’s executive director) was taken a bit out of context (at the Central City Draft Plan hearings). We’re not moving – not after all the money we’ve spent.” Customers concerned about the suggestion that Ballantynes might be relocating had contacted the store, she said. Everyone was “flat out” getting the store ready for the soft opening on October 29 as part of the

central city’s Restart the Heart initiative, Mrs Devine said. “The departments will open progressively through pre-Cup week and we’ll open the whole store by the end of that week.” A lot of refurbishment work, repairs and additional strengthening had been done to get the building ready, and all the staff were back working, she said. Ballantynes will be the anchor tenant in the post-quake Cashel Mall, with other retailers taking up a number of relocatable buildings in the mall in time for Cup and Show Week, which is a focal point of the year in Christchurch.

Santa’s coming on new route

CHRISTCHURCH’S popular Santa Parade will go ahead this December, although the route has been changed due to the earthquake. The normal route down Colombo Street runs through the red zone, so this year’s parade will make its way down Riccarton Road instead, starting on the corner of Wharenui and Riccarton roads and ending at Deans Avenue. “We worked with the council, the Fire Service and the police looking at alternative routes, Bruce Gorden, chairman of the Christchurch Children’s Christmas Parade Trust, said. “We would have liked it to have gone around Hagley Park along Park Terrace and Harper Avenue. This would have given families the chance to have a picnic in the park. We would have perhaps looked at taking floats into the park and having a festival, but we were told there is too much traffic post-earthquake along that route for it to be closed off, Mr Gorden said. Montreal St and the A&P Showgrounds were brought up, but discounted as being unsuitable, he said. “Riccarton Road seems to be the best option and it will work in terms of road closure. However, it would be further to take the floats from their storage facilities in Aranui and would take extra time to get to the parade’s starting point as some floats

needed to be towed or needed a pilot. “There are issues we’ve had to work through but the important thing is we were committed to putting on a parade this year. It’s good for the rebuild of Christchurch. We want people to know that Christmas is here, despite everything. Sponsorship has been another factor, with several sponsors from previous years unable to front up this time for economic reasons. This meant the number of participants in the parade was likely to be down on last year, Mr Gorden said. Some floats were also damaged in the earthquake and won’t make it this year, including The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, which was badly damaged. Many of the favourites would be there, such as Disney characters, the Flintstones, and a lot of characters related to topical children’s cartoons, Mr Gorden said. And of course, Santa himself. “He is all sorted, and so are the reindeer, but the front one preferred the other route with the trees, Mr Gorden joked. The parade will be on Sunday December 4, starting at 2pm. Riccarton Rd will be closed off about an hour Mother Goose in Colombo Street: and a half before the start and the assembly area on Wharenui Rd will be closed about two hours before.

School hosts quake royal commission

A SMALL school and parish hall in Riccarton has come into the national spotlight this week, as it hosts the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission. St Teresa’s church hall, an unassuming one-storey brick building on the corner Riccarton Road and Puriri Street, will house the commission for the next six months as it holds a series of public hearings into the building failures from the February 22 earthquake, which killed 182 people. Father Antoine Thomas said commission representatives first contacted the parish about two months ago. “They had been looking for a while for a suitable building to welcome the families for the hearing and that nothing had been better than the hall at St Teresa’s parish While it is a sacrifice for the school to lose the hall, which is used by 160 children along with parishioners and community groups, Fr Thomas said it was a great opportunity to serve Christchurch in its time of trials and suffering. “And a great opportunity to cooperate with the civil authorities to show the Catholic church was very open to welcome those who are grieving and those who are trying to help those who are grieving. Fr Thomas said the neighbouring church would be open each day so people could find solace. He said the school would now hold assemblies outside in fine weather. The hearings began on Monday with a welcome ceremony led by Reverend Maurice Gray of Ngai Tahu, who told about 100 bereaved family members, friends and members of the public he hoped the commission could bring some order into the chaos. Rev. Gray presented pounamu pendants to commissioners Justice Mark Cooper, Sir Ron Carter and Professor Richard Fenwick and songs were sung

by the St Teresa’s school Kapa Haka group. Justice Cooper later delivered a welcoming address in English and Maori, which was translated into the nine languages spoken by the quake victims, whose names were read out ahead of two minutes silence. Fr Thomas said the children were proud to welcome the Royal Commission and grieving families. “It is always refreshing for adults to have especially in a formal event the innocence, the beauty, the singing of children. CTV families’ spokesman Peter Brown said it was good to accommodate the children in the opening as the commission’s findings would hopefully protect future generations. He said the families hoped whatever the commission found caused the CTV building collapse would be fixed throughout New Zealand. “We don’t want to see another loss of life like this caused by this so I think that will be our main focus that the right answers are got to.

Marching against corporate greed

Chris Tobin

editorial

editor@mainlandpress.co.nz

Where were you on February 22? I HAD an email from Trevor - Trevor who I don’t know because he didn’t add his second name. You often receive these sorts of emails from people who want to get something off their chest but don’t provide their name so you know who they are. Anyway Trevor was not impressed with our story last week regarding the Christchurch members of the NZ Professional Firefighters Union who want a regional boss to step aside because of his alleged poor management, especially at the time of the February 22 earthquake. The article explained how the fire service national commander’s inquiry into the earthquake highlighted appropriate management support and leadership that would normally be expected was not there on February 22. Also the inquiry said “significant disconnect” existed between the firefighters and area management and that a review of the management structure was needed. In writing that article I spoke with firefighters who were unimpressed by most of management’s handling of the February 22 crisis; their morale is now at rock bottom; their wives and families are suffering. Trevor said this wasn’t news. He said he thought the whole

issue was about firefighters wanting more pay since, as an accompanying article explained last week, the firefighters and management have been locked in a pay dispute for some time. Trevor asked: “How many employees would want to get rid of their boss when they have been turned down for a pay rise? – do a survey. It could be close to 100 per cent.” Trevor suggested another survey should be undertaken about employees being paid while they slept and added we should find out how firefighters compared. Reading Trevor’s email I couldn’t help thinking: Where were you late on the night of February 22 Trev? Were you out there helping people in need, risking life and limb, or were you tucked up safely in bed under your duvet as those big aftershocks rumbled on? And where were the professional firefighters? Some of them were crawling around in the mayhem and horror of the CTV and PGC buildings trying to save lives. These are the same firefighters who are now unhappy and disillusioned with their management and questioning whether they want to remain firefighters. These men have earned the right to be heard….unlike you Trev.

MORE than 100 protesters marched down Riccarton Rd on Saturday as part of a Occupy Otautahi Christchurch protest against social inequality and corporate greed. Organised by Christchurch Unite Union, spokesperson Matt Jones said Saturday was Global Unite for Change Day when protesters joined over 650 other cities around the world to voice their message. The protesters marched from South Hagley Park near the temporary bus exchange where entertainment was provided and discussions held. “We stand in solidarity with our friends in New York who have been courageously occupying Wall St since September 7,” Mr Jones stated. “We support their assertion that endless corporate greed compromises the political system and holds too much influence over our everyday lives.” Unite Union represents 10,000 workers in the service and retail sectors. Photo: Chris Tobin

Ask the Mayor How serious is the water shortage in the city and can we expect more restrictions as we move into summer? The September 4, February 22 and June 13 earthquakes all significantly damaged our water reservoirs, wells and pipe network. The results of this damage means that our ability to deliver water to Christchurch and Lyttelton harbour residents during the peak summer period will be affected this year - hence the level 3 water restrictions now in place. To put things into perspective there are breaks to pipes in our reticulation network. Our water storage facilities, including four large reser-

voirs, have been severely damaged and, of the 174 deep wells that supply water into the city’s reticulation system, 20 wells need to be re-drilled, 55 have been repaired todate and 27 are in need of repair. The repair bill for the wells alone is estimated to be $17 million. The issue this year is not about water supply but the delivery of water to the city and Lyttelton Harbour communities over summer. You will have noticed that the water restrictions focus on outdoor water use. The reason for this is that outdoor irrigation

drastically increases pressure on our pump network during the summer season, which is why we haven’t had an issue over the winter period. Basically, if everyone waters their gardens every day over summer, we will lose water pressure across the city. The council is working hard to repair and re-drill as many reservoirs and wells as possible but we need the communities of Christchurch city and Lyttelton Harbour to do their bit, otherwise we could face total outdoor watering bans. We are monitoring consumption levels to

ensure we stay below the maximum amount we can use over a 24 hour period. If consumption moves above this point, which in technical terms is about 8200 cubic metres per hour, we will have to impose level 4 water restrictions, which means a total outdoor ban. All we ask is that residents think about their outdoor watering habits and abide by the restrictions. Every bit counts and we really do need community support to help us get through summer with enough drinking water for everyone to enjoy.

business operators The upcoming challenge for the Wigram seat will highlight the potential of all prospective candidates entering the political arena hopefully with the same integrity as Jim Anderton. The Labour Party’s Megan Woods, endorsed by Jim must capitalise on the Labour vote through her positivity and passion for curbing of asset sales. National’s mandate of cost of living/earthquake recovery, the Greens’ grandstanding of the $15 minimum wage, United Future’s directive to decriminalise cannabis and secure a Christchurch-based professional rugby league team are concepts not designated to obtain a large vote regime.

The additive of the Alliance Party with no specific mandates is ludicrous. Within this context the open minded, realistic and down to earth views by Megan Woods must transverse her into winning the Wigram seat for Labour.

If you have a question for Mayor Bob Parker email editor@mainlandpress.co.nz

Letters to the editor ‘God help us’ When the public have finished focusing on the Rugby World Cup, they should spend some time focusing on the Government’s ineptitude and lack of leadership in this year of disasters - starting with the economy! Nothing has been resolved for the grieving families associated with the Pike River disaster, Christchurch earthquake rebuilds stagnate under a blanket of bureaucracy, and now the debacle of the Rena. While the oil was pouring out into our pristine waters, the spin doctors took four days to tell us what the Government is going to do, instead of just getting the job done. Environment big focus in Selwyn This is the fourth part in our series looking at electorates in the run-in to the general election on November 26. This week we look at the Selwyn electorate. ELEC TIO N S

ENVIRONMENTAL issues are dominating the agenda for Selwyn, as the race for this year’s election continues to heat up. In its current form, Selwyn has been an electorate since 2008, following boundary changes in the lead-up to the last election. National MP Amy Adams, 40, won the seat by a 11,075 vote majority in 2008, and said she hoped to retain the seat this time round. “The margin is nice to have, but [it’s] not the driver. The important thing is to ask the voters to continue to have faith in me as their representative.” Labour Party candidate Jo McLean, 49, will be contesting the seat for the first time. Asset sales and cuts to early childhood education were at the top of the list of issues, Ms McLean said. “It would be foolish not to talk about that [asset sales] because it is something that does affect every single person irrespective of where you are, so I think it is a key message that we are taking to the people of Selwyn.” Mrs Adams said that the key issues for Selwyn were divided between

earthquake recovery, the creation of jobs for local people, and the pressures on the environment, especially around fresh water allocation. Consistent water usage with good environmental outcomes was a challenge that needed to be met front on, Mrs Adams said. “I think it is an issue that people are concerned about, both from the rural side of my electorate, but also from the non-rural side.” Ms McLean also had concerns over the environment, pointing out fracking as a major concern. Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a method of drilling for oil or gas, by forcing pressurised water several kilometres beneath the earth, she said. “I believe that it has the potential to become an issue, the process is banned in several countries and there is potential for contamination of waterways.” Green Party MP Eugenie Sage, 53, shared a similar view. “Fracking has no benefits for Canterbury or New Zealand yet risks polluting a major natural asset – groundwater -

Dallington community hub to close Gina McKenzie

AFTER seven months of helping locals deal with earthquake-related issues the Dallington Community Hub will close its doors on November 3. The aim of the centre which began as a supply of well water on the front lawn of a Gayhurst Road resident’s home was to help residents get through winter by supplying warm clothing, blankets and food to those in need. The hub grew as Trade Aid donated a relocatable office which was set up in its carpark further down Gayhurst Rd. Mrs Harrison said the hub evolved into a community-focused centre which focused on the needs of local residents. “Over time those initial needs have been replaced by people seeking advice on legal and zoning issues. “A lot of our regulars just really appreciated having someone to chat to. That little bit of social contact brightened up their day.” Mrs Harrison said regular visitors to the hub had been provided with the details of other community Moving on: Tracy Porteous and Anna Marie Harrison have volunteered at the Dallington Community Hub organisations which would be able since it opened in mid-March. AS a dozen teenagers from Hornby High School cycled back into the school grounds on Saturday some had tears in their eyes as they were reunited with their parents after three weeks. The group had taken part in a wilderness adventure from September 25 to October 15 as the first part part of the Project K programme, an initiative of the Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) which aims to build teenagers’ confidence. The next two stages are a community challenge and working with volunteer mentors. The wilderness adventure in the Lewis Pass included outdoor activities like caving and abseiling, a three-day practice tramp of 28 kilometers, a five day tramp covering nearly 55km and a 302km mountain bike ride home from Windy Point to Hornby High School. Participant Jason Boyd, 14, said he lost 10 kilograms during the trip and now aimed to keep the weight off, while Ma-

rissa Eggers and Eli Tito, also 14, wanted to keep their fitness up. Marissa said she was proud of herself for completing the adventure and it was nice to know others were proud of her too – even though she had difficulty carrying her pack, which was about as big as she was. “I felt like a dead ant especially when I fell backwards on day one of the five day tramp,” she said, FYD Christchurch director Luke Merryweather said he was very proud of the students and their next step was to choose a project for their community challenge. The students will be paired up with volunteer mentors on October 29. Another Project K group from Aranui High School is due to finish its wilderness adventure on Saturday. Community groups which would be interested in having help from the Project K teenagers can contact director@ canterbury.fyd.org.nz.

Ties with China will grow, new consul general says Gina McKenzie

CHRISTCHURCH’S rebuild will draw the city and China closer together according to new Chinese consul general Madame Tan Xiutian. Madame Tan said February’s earthquake accelerated the establishment of Christchurch’s first Chinese consulate general which will open in Riccarton by the end of the year. “We are so excited to be the first country with a full consulate general in Christchurch. “China can play a big part in the reconstruction of the city.” A recent agreement signed between China Development Bank and Pricewaterhouse Coopers New Zealand served as a catalyst for Christchurch’s reconstruction according to Madame Tan. “Together we’ll cooperate on major rebuilding projects to redevelop Christchurch into a lovely city once again. “China has experienced a number of devastating earthquakes so we can offer specialised assistance to help with the rebuild.” Madame Tan said the number of Chinese students in Christchurch was increasing along with larger numbers of holiday makers due to direct flights from southern China to Auckland that started operating in April. “New Zealand’s largest source of overseas students is from China and China is also the fastest growing overseas tourist market so I want to develop both of those areas. “Chinese student numbers are growing again after the earthquake and Christchurch is still a very popular choice as a holiday destination.” The natural beauty of Christchurch and Canterbury appealed to Madame Tan who spent the last four years as the Chinese consul general to Scotland. “Christchurch is still a very beautiful city even after the earthquakes.

“I love visiting Mona Vale, walking around Hagley Park and seeing all that natural beauty. “You have the mountains, rivers, valleys. To see all of this nature in one place is just breathtaking.” Madame Tan said she planned to explore as much of New Zealand as possible during her term and wanted to promote Christchurch and the South Island as a top destination for Chinese visitors. “This is a great opportunity for both China and Christchurch and New Zealand. “We can work together to create a wonderful partnership.”

Rebuild website provides answers A NEW question and answer section is among a raft of changes planned for the RebuildChristchurch.co.nz website. Over the next three months, the team, headed by Deon Swiggs, will be rolling out a new phase of development, in response to feedback from users and the wider community. Mr Swiggs said the website needed to adapt and grow as and when required to stay effective, relevant and useful to users. “The RebuildChristchurch team is actively out in the communities, working with them on a day-to-day basis so we are keenly aware of what people need from the website and are therefore able to tailor it to those needs, which changes as the rebuild progresses.” Mr Swiggs said the team received many questions, some easily answered, others requiring more investigation and many which were asked more than once.

Correction

In Mainland Press, Friday October 14, the story ‘Funds donated to expand tissue bank’ incorrectly stated that the donation from the Lions Club of Christchurch

“The common thread is that people do not seem to know where to go to ask their question and that’s where we come in.” The team would work with official earthquake recovery organisations and community groups to get the correct information. Mr Swiggs and web development manager Ben Young were also working on the next phase of development which would see additional multimedia and interactive maps being available on the site. This would allow a large amount of information, including more than 4000 articles and 1000 images, to be placed onto a map, according to geographic relevance. The team was antcipating that the new developments would be completed in the next four weeks and users would start to see the new information filtering through to the site after that.

More Canterbury students take quake-break AROUND 250 Canterbury students have descended on Auckland this week for the second round of ‘Break from the Quake’ camps. Not-for-profit organization Youthtown had originally arranged for more than 500 children aged 10-18 to escape the city over the July school holidays for camps in the North Island. However, inclement weather in both Christchurch and Auckland caused the cancellation of flights and postponement of the second week of camps until October. Youthtown chief executive, Keith Thorpe

said a great deal of work and research had gone into setting up the camps. “We are delighted to deliver the second week of camps for the children and youth of Christchurch who have experienced a tough year at the hands of Mother Nature and deserve a break.” The young Cantabrians are split between three locations in Auckland, Hunua and Huntly. On Monday, Auckland campers were given a tour of the newly installed Maori Waka at the Viaduct followed by a live, personalised

performance from the Topp Twins at The Cloud and entry to the giant rugby ball on Queen’s Wharf. Campers in Hunua and Huntley have been taking part in a variety of activities such as a high ropes course, a disco and a Frisbee golf day. All three groups will take a trip to Rainbow’s End in Auckland. The camps are free of charge, with all costs, including airfares, travel, food, accommodation and activities covered by Youthtown and other sponsors and supporters.

EARTHQUAKE damage to the nine-unit Amuri Park business complex in Barbadoes Street ranged from virtually none to significant, with four of the units having to be demolished, Greg Hedges, general manager of Intrade Damage: Some of the Amuri Park units which are being demolished. Enterprises says. Units seven, eight and nine are being demolished under a Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority directive. Unit six, which sustained significant damage, is also coming down. Unit five got off relatively scotfree, Mr Hedges said. Intrade Enterprises owns five of the units – numbers one, two, three, four and nine, and manages seven and eight. The units housed IT companies, accountancy, engineering, forestry consultancy, employment agency and a beauty school. The damage wasn’t structural and none of the exterior panels had collapsed. Internal walls collapsing through the exterior caused the damage, Mr Hedges said. Structural engineers have assessed all the remaining units and a quantity surveyor had estimated the costs of building remediation and building

replacement. This information was now with the insurance companies for evaluation, Mr Hedges said. Amuri Park was built in 1987 and in terms of design was ahead of its time. The tenants that occupied the units at the time of the February earthquake moved to a range of temporary locations from Riccarton to Kaiapoi, however, many were keen to return to Amuri Park, he said. “If the buildings can be repaired they will be repaired, but if it is too costly, the businesses will need to relocate elsewhere.” New offices may not necessarily be rebuilt on the sites where units have been demolished. “Under the new draft plan, the area has been designated residential, though we do have existing use rights,” Mr Hedges said. “Demolition should be completed in about three weeks. Once the land is cleared we can look at whether offices will be rebuilt under existing use rights, or whether it will become a residential area. We will discuss this with council.” The Churchill St end is residential and Mr Hedges said the complex would probably become a mix of residential and commercial.

Fish and chips rule: For the nine Thai and two Lao students studying English at Chisnallwood Intermediate there’s nothing better for dinner than the Kiwi favourite. Chisnallwood Intermediate has welcomed its first group of post-quake English language students with a group of 11 Thai and Lao students studying at the school for a month. The students have been studying English in the morning and then enjoying afternoon activities with visits to Akaroa and Hanmer Springs proving popular. Urairak Atsathit, 14, of Bangkok said she loved being able to study with local students and visiting Hanmer Springs. “Kiwi students are really friendly and kind. They make me feel welcome.” “Watching the Rugby World Cup while eating fish and chips has been a highlight for 16-year-old Krittawat Wiwatwanich who is an avid All Blacks supporter.” Special programmes coordinator Carl Everett said he hoped more students would return to Christchurch in the future. “We have a delegation from Thailand visiting later this month so hopefully that will lead to more international students studying here.”

Woman dies after fall

Police Inspector Peter Hegarty, said the death had been referred to the coroner. Police were called to a location near Kinsey Terrace, Clifton just before 1pm on Saturday, after having been contacted by the woman’s employer, and by passers-by who saw the woman near a cliff edge. Inspector Hegarty says Police staff spoke with the woman for over an hour before she fell, soon after 2pm. She suffered serious injuries in the fall and was taken to hospital where she subsequently died from her injuries. “Initial indications are that the deceased has fallen accidentally, but it will be for the coroner to determine the cause of death,” he said.

Politicians play it safe on trade questions

Listening Intently: ACT primary industry spokesperson Don Nicholson and Labour spokesperson on trade Maryan Street during a question and answer session at The George hotel on Wednesday

Tom Doudney

A QUESTION and answer session with trade representatives from the major political parties provided reassurance but little to get excited about for Canterbury exporters. Minister of Trade Tim Groser, Labour spokesperson on trade Maryan Street, Green Party spokesperson on trade Kennedy Graham and ACT primary industry spokesperson Don Nicholson fronted the meeting at The George last week. Mr Grosser said solving insurance issues was a key concern for business owners. “Economic growth will depend on us creating jobs and opportunities in the export sector.” Ms Street said Labour had as much interest as National in ensuring that New Zealand was well promoted internationally and exporters shouldn’t’ be concerned over the free trade agenda. All parties affirmed their commitment to economic growth. Solid Energy market development manager Mark Williamson said it had

been interesting to note the level of common philosophy around export issues between the parties. “It’s stuff that we’ve generally heard before, it’s been around for a while. I think the level of work they’re doing on free trade agreements is good and I think the stability that we get as an exporting nation from having a long term view and bipartisan approach has got to be helpful.” Enatel managing director Gary Foot said there were no surprises in any of the policies and more needed to be done to help small start up companies find their feet in the domestic market. “It’s very, very difficult for an export company to start fresh and just simply start exporting. They need to try their product, test it, get it into an environment and there is no better environment than the domestic environment to try and do that and that’s where government procurement could really assist those sorts of companies.”

A WASTEWATER treatment process that recycles biodiesel glycerol and produces ‘green’ renewable energy is now underway in Christchurch. The process is currently being used at the Christchurch City Council’s wastewater treatment plant in Bromley, New Zealand’s

second largest wastewater treatment facility. It is the result of three years of testing and research between the council and Solid Energy. Council city water and waste manager Mark Christison said the process was beneficial to the environment and the operational

sustainability of the city’s wastewater treatment procedures. “Research and testing has confirmed a method which uses the glycerol by-product to supercharge the plant’s gas production, delivering much more gas, and therefore energy, than it would normally.

Redevelopment works on the new extension to the Centre are progressing rapidly, with advancements every day! We have a lot of developments and changes happening each day, and want to keep you in the know. Our new extension has really started to take shape now with most of the steel work for the new building in place. The first of the concrete foundations have been poured and these will be finished over the upcoming weeks. The new extension is due for completion in early April with some really exciting new tenants opening in conjunction with this. Our new state-of-the-art toilet block and parent’s room opened at the beginning of August and has received very positive comments (see pictures). If you haven’t already had a look at them, be sure to check them out!

The new entrance through the rotunda is underway, with expected completion of this due at the end of October. The new entrance will feature curved glass auto doors - the first of their kind in New Zealand! The new feature canopy above The Warehouse is also completed and has greatly enhanced this area. Don’t forget that we have 2 entrances to our car park, one off Barrington Street and the other off Simeon Street, parking with plenty p of free pa arking at the th he entrance entran to the Centre!

Nutrition risks for older people Rising food costs could increase the risk of malnutrition for our vulnerable elderly citizens, according to New Zealand Nutrition Foundation’s Committee for Healthy Ageing chairman Julian Jensen. Mrs Jensen believes the rising costs of food could have a significant impact on this sector of society whose members are generally on fixed, tightly budgeted incomes. “It can be tempting to skimp on food when the budget is tight, but it is so important to eat a healthy and balanced diet as we grow older,”says Mrs Jensen. T h e W H O International Day of Older People and the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation is using this opportunity to draw attention this month to how important it is for older people to eat well. “It is at this time of life that attention to the risk of malnutrition should take precedence over obesity concerns.” Mrs Jensen advocates careful shopping and common sense to control those costs. Her ten top tips for older people to stay healthy are: EAT IN SEASON OR TRY CANNED AND FROZEN. Enjoy a variety of fresh, canned, frozen and dried fruit and vegetables. Canned tomatoes, packed with natural lycopene, are just as good for you as fresh tomatoes. The technology used to freeze vegetables ensures a very high quality product at an affordable price. HAVE GOOD QUALITY PROTEIN. Older people need a good intake of protein foods to preserve the muscle mass and strength needed to maintain independence in later life. Cheaper fish such as canned tuna, smoked fish and sardines can be made into pies, kedgeree, curried fish or fish cakes. Have red meat a couple of times per week to boost your intake of iron and zinc. Slow cookers are a great way to make cheaper cuts of meat, such as shin or gravy beef, tender and tasty. Frozen chicken is often cheaper than fresh. Baked beans, chickpeas, dried beans and lentils are also good sources of cheap protein. And don’t forget eggs; the cheaper ones are just as good nutritionally as the more expensive varieties. MAKE CEREAL SHOPPING SIMPLE. A plain, filling option such as Weetbix which is low in sugar and high in fibre is a cheaper choice. Don’t forget

the humble oatmeal – you can make your own muesli, or have it as a warming and nourishing breakfast. Rice and pasta are cheap cereals too, as are the store brands of wholemeal bread. DAIRY FOODS. Usually fresh milk is cheaper than UHT (long life) varieties – although UHT calcium-enriched milk is currently cheaper. As cheese is quite expensive now, use less by enhancing its flavour with a little curry powder or mustard. BUY JUST WHAT YOU NEED. Where things are pre-packaged, such as meat, ask for a smaller pack if what is on display is too much. If you have a range of stores available, shopping at bigger stores may provide better variety and lower costs. ‘Ready to heat and eat’ meals are good for emergencies. Ready-made meals can seem expensive, but are handy for emergencies or when you are unable to cook for yourself. Canned or packet soup is another convenient meal – eat them with a toasted sandwich or grainy bread. Pre-prepared items like fresh vegetables, salads, soups and sauce or gravy mixes can make life easier if you find it difficult to do everything from scratch. GET OUT THE OLD RECIPE BOOKS. Enjoy the pleasure of creating meals for you and your family or friends. In the cold weather, a hot pudding can be nutritious and comforting – apple crumble, creamy rice, bread and butter pudding are all low cost favourites. RESIST TEMPTATION. Supermarkets are full of tempting, high priced offerings. Shop with a list, don’t go to the supermarket when you are hungry, and try not to go too often. The New Zealand Nutrition Foundation has recently produced a couple of weekly shopping lists to help you choose items that contribute to a healthy diet. EAT WITH OTHER PEOPLE. If you are on your own, make a point of sharing meals with friends and family – take it in turns to cook or each bring a dish. Eating is an important social activity and we tend to eat better when we share meal with others. KEEP ACTIVE, AND MAINTAIN A GOOD WEIGHT. Losing weight can increase your risk of health problems, and research tells us being a little overweight makes you less susceptible to ill health.

With the right educator who has good support, our home based child care is the best option for young children.

Become a home educator and make a difference.

Lawyer Ngaire Smith and legal executive Margaret-Anne Hill have now been working from their oďŹƒce at The Sails complex on Ferry Road in Ferrymead for 5 months and have se led in to their new surroundings. “It is business as usualâ€? says Ngaire “and we are enjoying our new venture very muchâ€?. The past 5 months have been an even ul me with the June earthquake and the snowfalls, and of course many homeowners in the eastern suburbs are now grappling with red zones designa ons, insurance nego a ons and moving homes. “We are dealing with quite a few red zone clients helping them navigate through the process, the options available, and the logis cs of the transac ons. There is a lot to think about and understand before any decision is made, and everyone’s circumstances are dierent, so careful planning is requiredâ€?. Red zone residents have un l 30 April 2012 to accept either of the two oers being made by the Crown, and it is important to get professional advice at an early stage even if a resident is not planning to move from their home un l closer to the 2012 deadline, advises Ngaire. Ngaire has also found an increased number of clients seeking advice as to insurance issues, par cularly as to the settlement options offered by their insurance company where there home is deemed a total construc ve loss. If a homeowner has a full replacement

policy, then the usual options are either to rebuild on the site (subject to the status of the land), rebuild on an alterna ve site (to be purchased by the homeowner), purchase another exis ng home, or a cash pay-out. Generally speaking a cash pay-out will include a deduc on for deprecia on, or a market / indemnity value of the home prior to the earthquakes. Underinsurance has also become an issue where the insured oor area of the home is less than the actual measured area. Settlements may be reduced pro-rata according to the amount of the underinsurance. “I strongly recommend clients not to finalise a settlement with their insurance company until they have had independent advice on the terms of their policy, and the scope of works and cos ngs upon which the oer of settlement has been made, taking into account their future plansâ€? Ngaire says. A major change in the law brought about by the Unit Titles Act 2010 in June this year has resulted in many changes to the way body corporates are to be governed and managed in the future. “We are in the process of informing all our clients who are part of a body corporate of these changes and what the new Act means for them. It is extremely important that the changes are understood and implemented so that the body corporates are properly run and compliant with the legisla onâ€? adds Ngaire. Our office is opened from 8.30am to 5pm each week day although Ngaire is also happy to see clients outside of those hours when requested. “Together we are in a con nuing cycle of changeâ€? says Ngaire. “There will be many changes in the Ferrymead area, as indeed for all of Christchurch, as buildings come down and new ones take their place and as the Council makes planning decisions for Ferry Road generally. However, we love this For all your floristry needs part of town and we look please Ph 326-6229 forward to the evolu on of our new city.â€? www.thelilybud.co.nz

Married to the Duke of Bedford, English Regent of France, Jacquetta is introduced by him to a mysterious world of learning and alchemy. Her only friend in the great household is the Duke’s squire, Richard Woodville, who is at her side when the Duke’s death leaves her a wealthy widow. The two become lovers and marry in secret, returning to England to serve at the court of the young King Henry VI, where Jacquetta becomes a close and loyal friend to his new queen. Sensing a growing threat from the people of England and the danger of royal rivals, Jacquetta fights for her king, her queen and for her daughter Elizabeth Woodville, a young woman for whom Jacquetta can sense an extraordinary and unexpected future: a change of fortune, the throne of England, and the white rose of York.

Sport Trophy to remember quake victim

Memorial: Ross Bush’s daughter, Liana, with the Ross Bush Memorial Trophy for the best junior rider, at Le Race prize giving on Saturday. Right; Passionate: A young Ross Bush winning a race.

THE family of prominent Canterbury cyclist Ross Bush, who was killed in the February 22 earthquake, has donated a memorial trophy in his honour. The Ross Bush Memorial Trophy for the fastest junior rider in Le Race was established by the Bush family to remember the bricklayer with a passion for cycling, which he kept up until his death. Mr Bush’s car was crushed by a falling brick façade on Riccarton Road. Bush had represented New Zealand in the sport and won the 100km Christchurch to Akaroa handicap race, which was the forerunner to Le Race, in

1970. He still holds several long distance endurance records, including the Cape Reinga to Bluff trek which took him only six days, 11 hours 48 minutes. In April 1969 Bush’s wife went into labour while he was working in Akaroa. Bush cycled the 100 kilometres over the hills from Akaroa to Burwood hospital just in time to see his daughter Liana born at midnight. She presented the trophy for the best junior rider (aged 15-16), to Brodie Catterick, who completed Saturday’s race in a time of 2 hours 46 minutes 16 seconds and came 11th overall.

Govt grant honours surf lifeguards A CENTURY of saving lives on New Zealand beaches has been recognised by the government with Prime Minister John Key presenting Surf Lifesaving New Zealand with a $250,000 grant. Over that time surf lifeguards have saved more than 50,000 lives. The grant will go towards a new leadership programme, Bob Harvey, president of SLNZ said. “This special grant from central government will allow us to develop effective leaders and grow our own talent. We are an organisation passionate about preventing injury and drowning and we are lucky to have so many outstanding, charismatic and talented people who make up our membership.” SLNZ has 3800 volunteer surf lifeguards belonging to 73 clubs, which patrol 80 beaches across the country. The leadership programme will focus on high-potential individuals from all levels within the organisation, Mr Harvey said

Canterbury gymnasts looking good

Hopefuls: Ruth Platt and Rosie Griffioen will be among those trialling for the Alohafest competition in Hawaii in January.

A STRONG showing by local gymnasts at the recent Canterbury Gymnastics Championships may bode well for the National Gymnastics Championships in Timaru next month. Christchurch School of Gymnastics chief executive Avril Enslow said the Canterbury event, held at QEII, had gone really well. “There were some strong performances from our boys, in particular, as well as our level-five girls, who did extremely well and are looking like they will be favourites for that grade at the nationals.”

A total of 65 gymnasts have now been selected to represent the province at the national competition which has been scheduled two months later than usual so as not to clash with the Rugby World Cup. Ms Enslow said Canterbury gymnasts had performed really well last year and despite the earthquakes disrupting training, she had high hopes for this year’s team. “We’ve had those extra months to prepare so we feel that we’ll do just as well if not better in 2011.” A New Zealand team to compete

at the Alohafest competition in Hawaii in January was to be selected following the competition. “Canterbury has nine gymnasts trialling for that team and we’re expecting to see the majority come from our region.” One of those was Ruth Platt, of the step 9 team, who said she was looking forward to having a great nationals after having her year disrupted three ways. Her house, her gym and her high school, Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti, were all damaged by earthquakes.

Completed by Christmas

EQC is in the process of completing assessments of all earthquake damaged homes on a suburb-by-suburb basis to make sure all Canterbury properties are seen by Christmas. This geographic approach follows our ‘worstďŹ rst’ strategy, where EQC assessed severely damaged properties ďŹ rst. With approximately 100,000 homes assessed since February, those left are generally in the minor category, which means we’ll be on our way to your house very soon – by Christmas, in fact.
