TUESDAY’S Cup Day will provide CTV building earthquake survivor Clemency Mutze, with a much needed day of fun and excitement. “I think it’s a great opportunity forget about the immediate problems we’re going through and to focus on living in the moment. “I’ve always enjoyed the positive, fun atmosphere of Cup Day and it will be even more special this year.” Mrs Mutze, 34, said her experience during the February 22 earthquake where she plunged five floors during the CTV building collapse had changed her outlook on life and she now focused on enjoying life one day at a time. “Just getting dressed up and having a day where I can forget about everything that’s happened will be wonderful for me. “I think everyone in Christchurch will be especially looking forward to Cup Day this year after what we’ve all experienced and the fashions will be brighter and more exciting than ever.” Addington Raceway’s marketing manager Jed Moore said he was hoping for a huge Canterbury crowd for Tuesday’s Trotting Cup Day. “It’s a great opportunity for the public to have a fun day out after all we’ve been through since last September and we have an amazing line-up for everyone to enjoy.” Mr Moore said a minute’s silence for victims of February’s earthquake would be observed before the national anthem was sung by Christchurch singer Rebecca Nelson before the main race at 5:15pm on Tuesday. “This is a way of remembering and acknowledging what we’ve all been through this year.” Riccarton Park sponsorship and marketing manager Chris Rowe said he expected an excellent turnout for Saturday’s Galloping Cup Day which will be capped at 21,000 people this year. “Pre-sales are up on last year so we expect a really good turnout on the day. It’s about celebrating the fact that we’ve all made it through this very difficult year and looking forward to a better 2012.” Cup Week kicks off with Australasia’s best three-year-olds competing in the Sothy’s NZ 2000 Guineas, tomorrow at Riccarton Park. Meanwhile, the Canterbury A&P Show runs from Wednesday through to show day on Friday.

A NATIONAL collaborative programme for earthquake strengthening with funding available at both national and local levels is needed as an incentive for owners of earthquake prone buildings, the NZ Historic Places Trust believes. “This incentive could be in the form of a tax credit, loans or grants,” the trust said in its submission which will be heard next week at the Canterbury Earthquake Royal Commission’s public hearings. “An effective approach will aim to share the costs of earthquake strengthening among owners, territorial authorities and central government as a collaborative approach,” the trust said. “While heritage is a public good, it is often under private ownership.” The hearings resume on Monday and will consider the legal requirements for the design, construction and maintenance of new buildings. The trust said the current private insurance
of heritage buildings was often inadequate and it believed Earthquake Commission insurance coverage could be expanded to include commercial and public heritage buildings. “A levy arrangement could have a discount as an incentive for heritage buildings that have been earthquake strengthened.” The trust urged that in regard to heritage a full reassessment of civil defence, building safety and emergency management be made and suggested that changes to the Building Act 2004 should be investigated. The royal commission’s public hearings are being held at St Teresa’s church hall on the corner of Puriri St and Riccarton Road, Riccarton. Meanwhile, the Christchurch City Council’s deliberations on the Central City Plan will resume on Monday in the boardroom at the Beckenham Service Centre.

At the time of the September 4, 2010, earthquake there were 571 registered historic places, historic areas, and wahi tapu areas in Christchurch, Waimakariri and Selwyn districts. This number had been reduced to 509 and was expected to decline further, the trust said.

Another relic of our colonial past MOST societies around the world use fireworks to celebrate an event of some importance. We have our special time also when the public can let loose and enjoy the exploding, whizzing and banging. This day is Guy Fawkes Day, which this year occurs tomorrow. There was a time when the Fire Service was run off its feet dousing down fires caused by soaring rockets and other fireworks but things have improved in recent years with tighter controls on the type of ‘whizz bangers’ available and a shortening of the time frame in which they can be purchased. The name we give to this day is an inheritance of our British colonial past. One wonders whether it should be dropped. Our main day of fireworks ‘celebration,’ if you can call it that, remembers Guy Fawkes, a member of a Catholic group behind the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 who wanted to blow up the British parliament, kill the Protestant King James 1 and members of parliament and replace the king with Princess Elizabeth, the king’s daughter who was
third in line of succession. Before they could blow up parliament, however, Fawkes was caught by the authorities with the barrels of gunpowder. Sentenced to be hanged he managed to avoid that unappealing prospect and also the grisly certainty of being drawn and quartered by jumping from the scaffold and breaking his neck. Ever since on November 5, in England especially, fireworks and effigies of Guy Fawkes are thrown upon bonfires remembering the plot and Fawkes. Less well know is that as a result of the Gunpowder Plot laws were passed in England preventing Catholics from practising law, serving as officers in the Army or Navy, or voting in local or parliamentary elections. Stigmatised for centuries, it was not until 1829 that they were again allowed to vote. The relevance of remembering Guy Fawkes and this ancient British history here in New Zealand diminishes every year.

THIS evening the Canterbury Sports Awards will be presented but don’t expect New Zealand’s top woman mountaineer, Pat Deavoll, to figure. THE city came to the country this week, when a group of 40 students from Christchurch East School joined in Springston School’s annual pet day. Springston School principal Liz Weir said they wanted to invite the city students to have a country experience because they had a hard time over the past year with the earthquakes. Christchurch East School is close to the border of the central city red zone and has suffered disruption including a loss of students. On Wednesday the students had a great time interacting with the Springston children, with some of them meeting farm animals like calves, ponies and pigs for the first time.
Country experience: Christchurch East School pupils Harsh Patel and Freya Kersey, both aged 8, are introduced to Fluffy the lamb by Springston School student Ellie Walker, also 8.

The Re:START the Heart Trust has re-opened Cashel Mall with an innovative landscaped precinct featuring 27 temporary shops, all made from new shipping containers. Some top brands are opening for business, such as YouBee, Minnie Cooper and Storm, as well as popular Christchurch institutions Scorpio Books and of course, Ballantynes. We’re especially proud to be amongst it all with our new temporary Cashel Mall branch, the first bank to re-open in central Christchurch. It’s all part of our firm commitment to Canterbury and the community in which we work and live. So come down to Cashel Mall and see the beginning of a bright (and in this case, colourful) future. The rebuild has begun. We’re honoured to be there from the start. For the location of all other ASB branches in and around Christchurch visit asb.co.nz/Christchurch or call 0800 272 007.

Creating an eco-friendly New Brighton Guy Fawkes warning

Gina McKenzie
FRAUKE John is on a mission to transform New Brighton into an exciting eco-destination by fostering connections through her ecomarket which was launched last weekend. “We had a great start but this is just the beginning. I have so many plans for the market and also for New Brighton.” Mrs John, who was originally from Germany and has been living in New Brighton for six years, said the area could be revitalised by developing a niche market for eco-friendly goods. “There are so many people living here with lots of creative ideas. We just need to tap into that unused potential.” A self-confessed compulsive networker, Mrs John said that connecting people who believed in a vibrant future for New Brighton was vital. “I am just the person in the middle who links other like-minded people together. “I meet someone and rather than thinking about how the person could help me I think about how they could help other people.” Mrs John said encouraging stall-holders at her market and customers to take small steps to become more eco-friendly would result in wider ranging change. “There are so many small things people can do. For example one stallholder started using glasses for his samples instead of plastic cups and another sourced recycled wire to use in her necklaces instead of regular wire. “It’s a catalyst for change and great things can happen from small beginnings.” Over the next year, Mrs John planned to develop her eco-market by showcasing New Brighton musicians, artists and tradespeople – a move she believed would encourage the area to grow and develop its full potential. “By providing local talent with a much needed venue we can help people to develop their businesses and highlight the skills of the amazing people who live here.”
GUY Fawkes is on this weekend and the SPCA wants pet owners to keep their animals inside. SPCA Canterbury animal welfare manager Geoff Sutton said it’s the responsibility of pet owners to cater for their pets during stressful times, whether they be earthquakes or Guy Fawkes. Mr Sutton said the loud bangs, high pitched whistles and flashing lights of fireworks can be scary for animals so they should be kept inside
with curtains closed and the radio or television on to muffle the noise. He said animal accidents tend to happen when panicked pets escape, run out on to roads and are hit by cars. A checklist for pet and livestock owners during Guy Fawkes is available on the SPCA website. The SPCA’s annual Paws Appeal Week also begins on Guy Fawkes evening and runs until November 11.

Businesses receive half million dollar boost MORE than half a million dollars has been invested in Canterbury businesses during the last month, thanks to the Canterbury Business Recovery Trust. The trust, administered by Recover Canterbury, was established after the Christchurch earthquakes to provide cash injections into earthquake-affected businesses. During October the trust approved $510,157 to be distributed to 25 local businesses, made up of $427, 416 in grants and $82,741 in interest free loans. In the last six months it has distributed a total of $2.8 million and has helped 187 Canterbury businesses. Recover Canterbury communications manager Pip Tschudin said the need for their support was still very real, as evident by the daily requests for help and financial assistance.
“While they have survived the quakes, the aftershocks continue for many businesses. We need to wrap these businesses in support to ensure they can overcome this new, challenging environment and build a platform for future growth.” The recent successful applications for financial support have been for businesses within the retail, service, manufacturing and tourism industries. The key expenses businesses were requesting funds for included marketing support, website development, business planning and development costs, fit-out costs and bridging finance. Earlier this week Canterbury Leisure Tours received a $6000 grant from the trust for a trip to South East Asia and China, where business owner Kevin Edlin will try to attract the tourist market back to Christchurch.

AN initiative responsible for reinvigorating the central business district of the city of Newcastle in Australia could be the model for stimulating recovery in Christchurch, according to its founder. A similar-sized city to Christchurch, Newcastle suffered its own earthquake in 1989 which contributed to an already declining central city where by 2008, in large areas, 50 percent of commercial properties were vacant. However from 2009, the central city mall received a huge boost in tenancy after the formation of the Renew Newcastle initiative, where property owners were persuaded to lend their unoccupied spaces on a temporary basis to creative new start-up business or community projects for free. Many of the projects have become viable businesses. The initiative has since been franchised as a model for urban regeneration in Adelaide,
Townsville and Geelong and is being developed for implementation Australia-wide. Renew Newcastle founder Marcus Westbury visited Christchurch earlier this week to give public talks on Newcastle’s experience as an example for Christchurch to follow and to meet with key stakeholders in the recovery including property owners and Christchurch City Council staff. Mr Westbury said there was a crisis and a tragedy in Christchurch but also an opportunity. “There are, I am sure, people who want to do things and the city needs people to want to do things – to experiment and take on space, start their own projects. “I think if you can find ways of making it as easy as possible for as many of them as possible to get started that will serve the city well.” Mr Westbury said although many of the projects might not pan

out long-term, the purpose was to make it easy to start potentially successful businesses which would not otherwise get a chance. He acknowledged there were some real practical issues in the city around how fit and ready buildings and sites were to be used which would have to be worked around.
Service station money supports charities SEVERAL Christchurch charity organisations are better off thanks to a service station’s initiative and the votes of local residents. Customers at Z Energy’s Shirley and Linwood stations were able to vote for how sums of $5000 at each station should be divided between listed charities which were selected

Cas van der Veer was a Canterbury businessman who didn’t let Parkinson’s disease get in the way of leading a full life. On his death in 2004, he gave a generous bequest to the Canterbury Medical Research Founda on. The funding of the first full me professor ( Tim Anderson of Parkinson’s disease ) laid the founda on stone for what has developed into the Van der Veer Ins tute for Parkinson’s and Brain Research. In 2006 the Canterbury Medical Research Founda on nego ated the research rights for CRG’s new 3T MRI scanner, located in the same building as the Ins tute. This greatly improved the level of care for people in the region, while enabling world class research. That research coming from the major ter ary ins tutes in Canterbury and the Christchurch Hospital. The seed that was sown in 2004 has grown into a vibrant interna onal team of 50 staff and students, working together in two dedicated facili es, serving hundreds of pa ents. More than a thousand people have volunteered me in their research studies. The findings they generate are having an impact on the world stage. Breakfast bliss: Poached eggs, avocado, tomatoes, whole-grain toast and a splash of balsamic vinegar. What more could you need on a Saturday morning?
The pleasure of brunch The rolled oats have been put away for the summer season, and as spring mornings become warmer, even crispy bacon and succulent sausages have less appeal. The arrival of asparagus at the markets and in the supermarkets is the clincher – it is nearly summer and what better way to enjoy the warmer weekend mornings than with a lazy late breakfast/brunch. Another few months and we can add homegrown tomatoes to the meal. When you grow
Delightful tips: With the warmer weather, asparagus begins to appear in our markets and shops, and it is an annual delight. First eaten in Egypt thousands of years ago, asparagus was a delicacy in ancient Rome. There was even a special fleet of ships for getting it to market. In the fifteenth century it began to appear in monasteries in Europe and then appeared in England a century later. It wasn’t until the nineteenth century that the vegetable is known to have jumped the Atlantic and made it on to tables in the United States. In New Zealand the spring season for asparagus usually begins in Hawke’s Bay, with Canterbury’s crop following soon after. Once the initial early season high prices pass it is an affordable spring luxury for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner.
them yourself, either outside or in a glass house, they even smell healthy, unlike some of the pale imported specimens we eat in the cooler months. But whether the weekend brunch is at home, or at one of the numerous wonderful cafes around our city, it is hard to beat a leisurely brunch as a relaxing way to wind down after the rigours of the week. Eggs are always great and packed with protein to keep you going. And whether they are poached, scrambled or smothered in hollandaise for eggs benedict or florentine, they are the cornerstone of a good breakfast. Wholemeal bread, bursting with health-giving properties, is also vital for a decent breakfast, and Christchurch has a number of bakeries that produce artisan loaves ready to add grainy goodness to the perfect weekend brunch. Then there is avocado – brimming with essential nutrients and full of good fats, it’s hard to beat an avo’s smooth and delicious taste-bud treat. Finish it off with a good splash of balsamic vinegar, and avocado or olive oil and we’re almost there. Book-end the meal with a cup of English Breakfast tea and a strong locally-roasted fresh coffee and you’re close to the perfect Saturday brunch. Yum.

It is Mother Nature’s way of reminding us that we need to care for our plants. The common insect offenders are whitefly and aphids (green fly). Aphids appear on the stems or growing ps of Watch out, there is a snail about. loads of crops, such as peas, tomatoes, chillies, beans or anything else that takes their fancy. It’s ready to use, there is no messing around mixing up po ons or other sprays and most importantly, it is safe. Crops can be sprayed and harvested within the same day. Buskers will bring some belly laughs again AFTER a tough year it’s time to laugh again at the Christchurch World Buskers Festival which will be held at the Hagley village from January 19 -29. The village will serve as the stage for some of the world’s best street performers, all of whom have one goal in mind - to get Christchurch laughing again. “This city needs a good deep belly laugh and that’s what we’re going to give them with this festival,â€? creative director Jodi Wright said. “A lot of the buskers we’ve selected for the festival have speciďŹ cally asked to be included in the line-up because they really want to see Christchurch smiling again so I know they’re going to give every performance their very best, which should make for some crazily fun shows. “We’ve enlisted acts from 12 countries that represent the gamut in street and circus skills and together they’ll provide the festival programme with more than 500 performances. Jaguar, Land Rover on top JAGUAR and Land Rover have won Autoweek magazine’s best in show awards at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show. The Land Rover DC100 Sport won the best concept award and the Jaguar C-X16 was selected as the best vehicle at the show, up-staging its German rivals. Autoweek editor Wes Raynal said there had been much debate over the best concept award. “We liked the Kia GT, and the Jaguar C-X16, but the DC100 Defender Sport concept came to Frankfurt as a complete surprise and in the end, we decided this was our winner.
“The DC100 Sport is loaded with a bunch of cool technology, such as a terrain scanner and a sonar-depth sounder for water crossings, just to name a few, and these are things series one, two and three owners could not conceive of. Mr Raynal also praised Jaguar’s design director Ian Callum for the C-X16 concept with its “long hood and beau ful curves. “This is Callum’s second-straight best in show award from an interna onal show, as his C-X75 Concept won at the Geneva Motor Show this past spring. He’s on a roll and we truly love this car, Mr Raynal said.

More appealing: The latest Captiva has some meaningful changes, boosting its appeal.
Captiva now even more appealing W Bob Nettleton
ITH the Commodore such a dominant model on the Holden landscape, it is easy to overlook the major contribu on the Cap va SUV makes to the company’s success these days. Since its launch ďŹ ve years ago, the Koreandesigned Cap va has transformed Holden from a perennial struggler in the recrea onal 4WD market to one of the major players. The release earlier this year of an upgraded Series 2 Cap va represents the ďŹ rst really signiďŹ cant revision of this model since its debut. This is more than some superďŹ cial mid-life make-over and sees some meaningful changes that make the Cap va even more appealing. Visually it sports new front-end styling featuring a dis nc ve twin-port grille anked by prominent fog lamps. Model names are determined by their sea ng capaci es. The Cap va 7 has a third row of seats in recogni on of its 5+ 2 people carrying abili es while the standard model with room for 3+2 adults equals Cap va 5. Inside, addi onal oerings over the Series 1 version include, leather wrap steering wheel and cruise control and Bluetooth connec vity. Recently I spent some drive me at the helms of a couple of petrol Cap va oerings. First cab of o the rank (or should that be Cab va?), was the premium priced LX V6 petrol 4WD cos ng $55890. This was followed by the price-leading 2WD SX 5 automa c hitched to a vastly improved 2.4 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine. Armed with a $39990 price s cker, it is unashamedly pitched at the costconscious buyer. The 2.4 litre motor has under gone a major

upgrade that sees its maximum power climb by 20kw to 123kw. This performance boost was needed because the previous motor lacked both reďŹ nement and performance kick. The thro le response is far keener, something that was apparent the ďŹ rst me I pulled out to pass some slower moving traďŹƒc. While it is not the great redeemer, this engine is a welcome improvement over the unit it replaces. The 3.0 litre V6 Commodore adapts nicely to life in the Cap va oering smooth six-cylinder grunt for towing or eortless cruising. While the accelera on is not as snappy as it is in the lighter Commodore sedan that uses the same engine, it is s ll plenty quick enough in this type of vehicle. The four-cylinder engine works well enough with its ďŹ ve-speed automa c summoning the right gear changes and at the right me, without scaling the same heights as the slick and polished six-speed p shi auto teamed with the 3.0 litre V6. The Series 2 has safety well and truly covered on both the ac ve and passive fronts with six airbags, electronic Stability Control system incorpora ng an -lock braking with trac on control and ac ve rollover protec on also thrown into the safety mix. Handling goes up a notch in the Series 2 Cap va with the suspension li ing its game to keep a ghter rein on body roll at higher cornering speeds. This along with improvements in the levels of grip means the suspension is less inclined to take its eye o the ball, when confronted with rougher road surfaces. I found this dropped the stress levels when driving both vehicles over more challenging terrain.

fter 33 wonderful years in this delightful character bungalow, our owner has made the decision it is now time to pass the baton on and move on to something a little smaller. Standing strong and sturdy on 743m2 of land, this home has been filled with family fun times and laughter, where memories have been made and stories a-plenty told. Indoors flows easily to outdoors, where you are greeted by your own private north-facing, park-like setting. Nestled amidst a mature, meticulous garden, there is an added bonus of fruit trees and a large vegetable plot. Situated in the highly desired school zones of Paparoa Primary and Heaton Intermediate, and within easy walking distance to St Andrew’s College and Merivale Mall, this home surely ticks all the boxes. Upon entering, there is an immediate sense of warmth and happiness, so my suggestion is come and experience
that for yourself and make your own judgement. This home is for definite sale, so will you be the fortunate new owner? I suggest you view smartly to secure your interest, as our owner wants this home sold on auction day, if not before.
Open Homes will be Saturday 5 Nov 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm Sunday 6 Nov 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm Thursday 10 Nov 1:45 pm - 2:30 pm Saturday 12 Nov 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm and Sunday 13 Nov 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm or viewing by appointment.

The carnival is over I have just come off my first weekend without World Cup Rugby! I don’t know about you but it just felt really weird. When the schedule was first announced that there was to be 48 matches shown live on TV, I thought “well that’s way too much for me”, but how quickly I got sucked into the whole deal. It truly was a magnificent tournament. After any major event there is the inevitable debrief to be undertaken. So I have set out to do my own. Firstly to the organising committee. I really am struggling to find fault. For my money, only praise can be heaped upon all those involved. What a calm, cool approach the CEO Martin Snedden showed from day one. Let’s face it it was a huge job description he was given. For a start the sheer number of tickets he was charged with having to sell had never been given to anyone in this country. The location
and spread of matches right across the country was a logistical nightmare. To further compound the situation the second largest city in New Zealand was taken out by an act of God. Undeterred, Snedden forged on with a dogged determination and outwardly showed no panic but I’m sure deep down he must have thought what have I done to upset Mother Nature? Sure enough the original pledge that we would create a “Stadium of four million” was exactly what occurred. Even non-rugby people got swept up in the tidal wave of World Cup fever.
From anthems done brilliantly, to the two teams running out side by side to the performances of the minnows to the hard working army of volunteers and the huge crowds that rolled up for the ‘minor matches.’ Overall I firmly believed that like the coaches of the competing teams, given the performance of the organisers, Martin Snedden chose his team just as wisely. Arise Sir Martin? The down side for me was that the 2011 World Cup would have got 10 out of 10 if the IRB had stayed at home. They have shown again that they are completely out of touch with the game as it is now played and administered This is the group that needs to strip themselves right back to the bare bones when they do their debrief. New Zealand getting another chance to host a future World Cup is more likely to happen than the IRB moving into the 21st century!
