Brolly weather for racing

It was a dull start for Cup Day at Addington yesterday morning with showers falling but Fight For Life show girls, Amy Broadstock, left, and Jemma Morris-Williamson brightened up proceedings with their spectacular costumes. Mainland Press photographer Gilbert Wealleans was there to capture some of the early action.

RESILIENCE and new beginnings will be key features of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show, which opens today and continues until Friday. In a special event to celebrate the city’s resilience, teams from the Student Volunteer Army, the Farmy Army, Civil Defence and Fulton Hogan will take part in the Air New Zealand Amazing Quake Race on Friday. The idea came about when organisers were deciding what to do with the wheelbarrows, used by the volunteer armies to clear liquefaction in the eastern suburbs, stored at the Canterbury Agricultural Park. “Things that have become everyday for us, fencing, orange cones, danger tape, port-a-loos, high-vis vests, they will have to complete a series of tasks along the course using all those things,” event director Rae Finlay said.

The winning team will get prize packs from Tui and $2000 from Air New Zealand to donate to the charity of its choice. More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the show, which has attracted more than 6200 livestock and feature competition entries and 600 trade exhibitors. Ms Finlay said most Christchurch people had been to the show at some point in their lives and it meant a lot following the earthquakes of the past year. “People are craving for normality and the show has been going for 149 years. “Here at the show grounds it’s hard to realise what has happened in centre of the city and the eastern suburbs because there’s no damage out here.” The Met Service predicted showers turning to rain for today, with the rain clearing and the weather becoming fine tomorrow. Friday will see a few showers developing and a southerly change.

“The decision-making on the ultimate solution should be by the Cathedral diocese and not central government.”

“It should be kept and restored.”

“It should be demolished.”

“I’d be happy for it to be restored, but not at the taxpayers’ cost.”

“It is a Christchurch icon and one of the few things in Christchurch which should be restored.”

“Of course it should be bashed down, and so should the Catholic one too. Those buildings are a terrible waste of space and just ornamental.”

CHRISTCHURCH police say low levels of reported burglary in the central city red zone since February 22 show that rumours of “rampant looting” in the CBD are unfounded. Police have completed an analysis of reported burglaries in the area bounded by Kilmore St, Madras St, St Asaph St and Cambridge Tce, between February 22 and October 13. A total of 28 burglaries have been reported to police in that time. Of these, seven were cleared as “no offence” as they were found to be

the result of urban search and rescue (USAR) teams having to make forced entry into buildings to undertake searches in the weeks following the earthquake. The number of burglaries is a decrease of 17 offences (38 percent) compared to the same period last year. Items reported stolen included cash, jewellery, alcohol and electronic items including laptops. Over the same period there have been five arrests for burglary-type offences, including three of “theft by a person in

Christchurch Central area commander Inspector Derek Erasmus said the analysis showed that speculation and rumour about looting in the CBD over recent months was largely unfounded. “Certainly some burglary has been occurring in the CBD,” he said. “But the levels are not alarming - and there’s no evidence of widespread looting as has been rumoured in some quarters.”

First votes cast today THE first votes in the 2011 general election and referendum will be cast today by voters who can’t get to a polling place in their electorate on election day. Advance voting closes on Friday, November 25. “If you’re unable to get to a polling place on election day, because you’re on holiday, working, in hospital or for any other reason, voting in advance is the easiest way to have your say,” chief electoral officer Robert Peden said. More than 250 advance voting places were available around the country for people to cast their vote.

From busking to anthem singing Gina McKenzie

FEBRUARY’S earthquake forced 23-yearold Christchurch classical singer Rebecca Nelson to relocate to Nelson but she made a triumphant return to sing the national anthem at Cup Day yesterday. Mainland Press spoke to a nervous but excited Ms Nelson before she took to the stage yesterday about her singing career and returning to Christchurch. “It’s a huge honour for me to sing the national anthem and to sing for Christchurch after everything people have been through since the earthquakes.” Ms Nelson said she was a regular Cup Day attendee and thought this year would be especially meaningful for Christchurch residents. “For me it has always been a fun day out and I think people really need something to smile about after such a tough year.” After spending a year busking in Ireland and touring with The Priests, Ms Nelson returned to Christchurch at the end of 2010 to tour the South Island with Will Martin. February’s earthquake cut short the tour and left few opportunities for Christchurch

singers so Ms Nelson, who started singing when she was 13, moved to Nelson and was busking on the streets when she was approached by a local newspaper reporter. After featuring on the front page of a Nelson newspaper she secured the backing to release her debut album called Pure Imagination in September. “I was really lucky that everything just fell into place for me. “One minute I was busking on the street and the next I was performing in the Theatre Royal and recording my album. It was quite amazing.” Paying tribute to her Christchurch roots, Ms Nelson returned to the city to record the album and shot the cover photos around the Port Hills. Now that her album has been launched Ms Nelson has set her sights on an international singing career. “I would love to travel all over the world and sing but at the moment I’m just taking it one step at a time. “No matter where I end up Christchurch will always be home to me.”

TV sets boost morale at hospital SHOWDAY & SATURDAY 13TH Morale booster: Ward 30 and 31 patients at Princess Margaret Hospital were able to watch the Rugby World Cup final thanks to the donation of two televisions from the Bishopdale/Burnside Rotary Club. Pictured from left are: ward 30 charge nurse Donna Gallaway, Bishopdale/Burnside Rotary Club earthquake projects director Keith Walker and ward 31 charge nurse Alison Gallant. After February 22’s earthquake the two top floors of Christchurch Public Hospital became unusable, which resulted in the reopening of two wards at Princess Margaret Hospital that were closed in 1991. The television sets in the lounges of these wards were very old and the remotes had been lost. A member of the Bishopdale/Burnside Rotary Club who spent a few weeks in ward 30 of Princess Margaret Hospital noticed this and brought the need for replacement sets to the attention of the club which donated two television sets to the hospital. “The TVs have been a real morale booster for our patients. The fact that Rotary considered our wards is greatly appreciated,” Allison Gallant said.

Parihaka invasion remembered 130 years on Tom Doudney

ON a weekend when many were letting off fireworks to mark Guy Fawkes Day, others gathered at various locations around Christchurch to commemorate the invasion of the Maori settlement of Parihaka on the same day 130 years ago. On November 5, 1881, 1500 militia and members of the armed constabulary invaded the Taranaki settlement despite its people’s adherence to non-violent resistance. Chiefs Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahai, along with many other Parihaka men and boys, were arrested and imprisoned

in jails throughout the country. Seminars were held at the WEA centre on Saturday morning with guest speakers while an afternoon session at St Mary’s Church in Addington featured songs, dance, poetry and readings dedicated to Parihaka. Commemorations also took place on Friday at the Rose Garden in Lyttelton, where many Parihaka prisoners were imprisoned. Several people spoke and Caine Tauwhare of Lyttelton’s Whakaraupo Carving Centre performed a haka. Organiser Christine Wilson said this year’s ceremony had been particularly emotional. “It was really quite a powerful and moving ceremony today for the people who were there.” Mr Te Patu said more than one of the speakers had been tearful as they spoke.

Camping out in Hagley Park THE south-eastern corner of Hagley Park is looking like a gypsy encampment these days. Occupy Christchurch protesters have been camped there for 25 days and are not in a hurry to shift any time soon. A few days ago I wandered along to have a chat to some of them. They seemed an amiable group, some of them were barefooted, one strummed a guitar, another beat a drum while a man peddled energetically on a stationary bike apparently to generate enough power to recharge their cellphones. All rather laid back and almost domesticated. Washing hung on a line and there were rows of small pup tents – in fact more tents than people. I wanted to know what they were protesting about. Ted Jones, a café worker in his early 20s, said he was against the whole idea today that money was more important than people. “Some say I’m an idealist,” he said.

Ted pointed out a man of similar age to him, Rob Read, “a freelance community worker,” as someone to talk to, although he said there were no real leaders. What was Rob protesting about? I asked. He replied something along the lines that he would soon be a dad and he didn’t want his child growing up in a society so dependent on money. “I came from a poor family,” he said. “When I was growing up I got the latest game three months after they came out and was picked on for that. I don’t want that for my kids.” It all seemed rather vague. The Occupy Christchurch event is linked to other protests around the country and the world condemning corporate greed. They said people yelled at them from car windows to get a job but Rob remarked they were not jobless, druggie hippies at all and they were prepared to stay in Hagley Park for as long as it took. “I’ll go on indefinitely until change is visible,” Ted said. Rob was the same. “I was the first person on the protest from day one and I’ll be the last to leave. I’ll be here till we get major change.”

FRANCIE Wortel had her birthday wish to see inside the central city red zone granted on Saturday afternoon. She and her husband John and their two children Blake, 9, and Danielle, 5, were on the first bus which travelled around the inner city in a series of tours for the public organised by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority. “I was upset that things were gone and especially Warners Hotel,” MrsWortel said. “I had to go back to see that. When I was younger I used to frequent it.” Mr Worter said the tour was a chance to see what was left of the central city that he had known. “I wanted to see it for one last time before it is really gone. Our city as it used to be won’t be our city anymore; it will be a whole new city.” He said although he had a general idea of what it might be like he was still amazed by the large empty spaces. “You don’t realise how bad it is until you see it.” Cera media manager Monique Devereux said only one person who had booked for the first bus did not turn up. She said the tours were being kept low key and St Johns and Red Cross were at the starting and finishing pointin Cranmer Square to help people if required. Trips were held between 2pm and 6pm on Saturday and Sunday and will run for the next five weekends. Twilight trips will begin next Monday. Cera chief executive Roger Sutton said he hoped this would ease concerns that people who wanted to go on them could miss out. The twilight trips will run Monday to Wednesday.

Unfortunately for Rob and Ted the only major change will come from the Christchurch City Council when its patience over camping bylaws being violated wears out and the protesters are told to pack up and leave Hagley Park. Greed, meanwhile, will live on.

Cathedral’s future a concern in central city electorate Duncan Martin

THE future of ChristChurch Cathedral and the earthquake rebuild on the whole are the major issues for voters in Christchurch Central, candidates say. A Labour Party seat since 1946, Christchurch Central is currently held by MP Brendon Burns, 55, who was elected for the first time in 2008. That year Mr Burns won the electorate vote by a margin of 935 votes - 7836 fewer than forerunner Tim Barnett in 2005. The earthquake response has dominated Mr Burns’ work this year “without question”, he said. “I would ask voters to look at the record of the last three years. I’ve been prepared to stand up on a whole range of issues, most particularly over the last year since the earthquake,” he said. National Party candidate and list-MP Nicky Wagner, 57, said she wanted to assure the constituents that John Key and the National Government was absolutely committed to rebuilding the city “I have a positive message that when we rebuild Christchurch, and we will, it will be a safer, and perhaps more people-friendly city.”

EL ECT IONS Mr Burns said the future of ChristChurch Cathedral was a major issue for the earthquake rebuild, and he hoped cathedral authorities would take the public into their confidence. “This is our cathedral and we need to know precisely what is the fate of that very very special building, really the most iconic building in Christchurch, and really the heart of who we are as a people.” Ms Wagner agreed that the cathedral’s future was important to the people of Christchurch, and said National would ensure as much of it was rebuilt as possible. “I don’t know if it’s a priority of the campaign because I’m really looking at the bigger issues, there’s the whole rebuild of Christchurch, and the cathedral’s just one small part of it.” ACT Party candidate Toni Severin, 41, said her campaign was focused on getting the Christchurch economy up and running, after the earthquakes. This could only be done by fixing New Zealand’s economy on the whole, she said.

2 0 11

“We need less bureaucracy, to make sure that the red tape is cut through, so people can move on with their lives, to be able to rebuild, get their homes, get their businesses back up.” Green Party candidate David Moorhouse, 47, said the earthquake recovery needed to be managed to ensure social, environmental and economic sustainability. “People’s needs must come first and the community has to be engaged to get the recovery moving. Special interest groups such as property investors and insurance companies must not be given preferential treatment.” Conservative Party candidate Michael Cooke, 37, said the main issues he would be campaigning on would be honesty, increased safety for citizens, and building stronger families and society. “We’ve been through a lot, there’s still a lot of uncertainty, but at the same time we’re beginning to appreciate the way it’s brought us together and the opportunity it’s giving us to plan for the future as a community - there are definite opportunities coming out of a very difficult time,” he said.

Rally calls for halt to heritage demolitions Tom Doudney

AN alleged ‘demolition frenzy’ in Christchurch must be halted immediately before the city loses its identity, heritage campaigners told a rally on Monday. The rally, organised by the Christchurch Civic Trust, IConiC and other heritage campaigners, in protest over the demolition of heritage buildings drew around 200 supporters to the banks of the Avon River near the corner of Worcester Boulevard and Cambridge Tce on Monday. Labour’s Christchurch Central MP Brendon Burns led the rally, while Green Party leaders Metiria Turei and Russell Norman, Green Party Selwyn MP Eugenie Sage, as well as Christchurch city councillors Glen Livingstone, Yani Johanson and Helen Broughton were also in attendance. Speakers and attendees expressed anger and frustration at the rushed nature of the demolition

process and called for greater transparency and accountability from the Government and the Cantebury Earthquake Recovery Authority. Phillipstown resident Dave Adamson said the threat of demolition hanging over the ChristChurch Cathedral was outrageous. “It’s the cathedral. To say it can’t be saved is absurd. Would they demolish Big Ben if it was damaged? I don’t think so. The Eiffel Tower? I don’t think so.” Mr Burns said a halt should be called on the demolition of heritage buildings so a proper assessment could be made on which ones genuinely needed to come down and which could be saved. Greater transparency of information for heritage buildings including the Cathedral was needed. “There are engineers saying one thing, that it must be knocked down, and engineers saying that it can be saved. Let’s have that debate in public.”

Gardens playground closed for maintenance The Christchurch City Council Botanic Gardens is closing its playground and paddling pool for two weeks from Monday 21 November for urgent repair work and maintenance to be completed. This work will involves replacement of some of the damaged concrete pathways, removing damaged artificial grass along the edge of the playground and relaying new concrete in its place.

NZ Cup & Show Week is here! Canterbury’s favourite spring festival, New Zealand Cup and Show Week, is now well underway. Yesterday saw a stellar day at Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup Day at Addington Raceway and today the Canterbury A&P Show will open its gates to bring country to town. Christchurch City Council Marketing Manager Richard Stokes says NZ Cup and Show Week is a timely celebration for the City. “Cup Week always signifies the start of summer outings and this season will be a

particularly welcome time of relaxation and a chance to socialise with friends and family.”

will be capped at 21,000 people to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable day for all.

Canterbury A&P Show, the country’s largest A&P show, is on today (Wednesday 9 November) through to Showday on Friday 11 November, from 8am to 5.30pm daily. Another huge line-up of entertainment, displays and competitions will be on offer and patrons are guaranteed to enjoy a fantastic day out for the whole family.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says this is the week we’ve all been waiting for.

Wrapping up the week is Christchurch Casino NZ Cup Day this Saturday 12 November at Riccarton Park. The event is R18 this year and

“Cup Week is finally here to give us that good time we truly deserve. I encourage all Cantabrians and visitors to the city to make the most of this exciting time and to enjoy some time out with friends and family.” Tickets are on sale through Ticketek (ticketek.co.nz) or are available on the gate. Visit nzcupandshow.co.nz for more info.

Council’s City Environment General Manager Jane Parfitt says the repairs are necessary so families of all ages can enjoy the playground in a safe and secure environment in time for the summer season. “We want families in Christchurch to enjoy the playground free of potential hazards, which is why we are getting the repairs underway now before the summer season starts,” she says. From Monday 14 November, work on the rebuild of North Hagley Park tennis courts will also begin. This will involve a complete reconstruction of the court surface with new posts, nets and fencing. It is expected that the courts will be completed by Christmas. Building consent update Christchurch City Council is preparing for an increase in demand for building consents as a result of recent earthquakes. The Council expects to meet this demand and we’ll keep you updated about our progress in the area of issuing consents, checking completed work to ensure it meets all requirements of consent, and issuing a code of compliance certificates. If you’re thinking of doing building work, make sure you talk to the Council as early as possible as we can help you with advice on how best to complete your consent application and meet the building code. To set up a meeting for advice on the consenting process contact 03 941 8999 or see www.ccc.govt.nz

Christchurch Art Gallery will this week begin offering free guided tours of works of art that feature in its vicinity. The Gallery will launch its Outer Spaces Tours initiative on Saturday 5 November. Tours will take place at 12 noon on weekend days until early next year. Led by the Gallery’s volunteer guides, the 45 minute tours will explore a selection of works outside and near the Gallery. Acting Director Blair Jackson says the tours are part of the ‘Gallery without walls’ initiative, which aims to ensure art and art-related programmes are available to the people of Christchurch while the Gallery’s doors are closed.

EQC is in the process of completing assessments of all earthquake damaged homes on a suburbby-suburb basis to make sure all Canterbury properties are seen by Christmas. This geographic approach follows our ‘worst-ďŹ rst’ strategy, where EQC assessed severely damaged properties ďŹ rst. With approximately 74% homes assessed since February, those left are generally in the minor category, which means we’ll be on our way to your house very soon – by Christmas, in fact.

Young writer overcomes fear to win contest Gina McKenzie

Love of nature: Isaac Heap’s passion for nature and animals is expressed through his writing.

SEVEN-year-old Isaac Heap overcame his fear of writing by learning to express himself and ended up being chosen as one of six winners out of 22,000 entrants in the 2011 Young Australian Writers Competition. “In the beginning I hated writing, but when I started a creative writing class my teacher said the ideas were more important than spelling and then I started liking it.” Isaac, a year 2 pupil at Ilam Primary School, said his teacher Nicky Frisby suggested he join a special creative writing class at the school, which led to him creating his award-winning short story entitled Life Tree. “I really love trees and animals and the ideas just came from there. Once I started

writing I couldn’t stop and everything fitted together.” Isaac’s mother Michele McMaster said she hoped Isaac’s story would inspire other children to take up writing and express themselves. “Isaac had all these wonderfully creative ideas in his head, but couldn’t get them down on paper because he was

HE’S a skilled and qualified tradesman, eager to work and wants to settle in Christchurch when others are leaving – but Carlos Costa still can’t find work. A South African citizen, Mr Costa came to New Zealand three months ago to visit a sister in Tauranga and liked it so much he decided he’d like to stay. He bought a car, got a driver’s licence, extended his visa to 12 months, and started looking for work. However, after emailing around 60 Christchurch employers in that time, he has received only one reply from a temping agency who told him he would need to get a working visa before they could hire him. However, he will not be able to get a working visa until he has a job offer. “All I need is an opportunity for someone to take me on, it’s not even a question of salary, all I want is work.” He had already completed a medical check-up and immigration officials had told him he could have his visa in five or six days if he found work. Mr Costa said he was surprised by the lack of response given his qualifications as an electrician with numerous years of experience, which included running his own businesses in electronics and

hospitality, and the supposed need for tradespeople for the city’s rebuild. He has good character references, speaks five languages, and is even willing to start as a trainee. “All I wish is for an opportunity to work and live in Christchurch and be part of its future,” he said. “I don’t care if you’ve got earthquakes or not.”

afraid of making spelling mistakes. “I’m sure there are lots of other children out there in the same position who just need a different way of learning to encourage them to write.” Isaac won a book and a money voucher and his writing will be published in the next issue of the Australian Comet magazine.

The Egg Guy teaches kids how it’s done In a bid to get school children all over New Zealand excited about eating breakfast, The Egg Guy is visiting schools to teach, inspire and grow the confidence of budding cooks through simple and tasty egg recipes. In each school week, over 100,000 children (aged 5-14 years of age) skip breakfast at least one day of the week. Children who miss this meal are more likely to buy nutrient-poor food to eat on their way to school, which is precisely why these visits are so important. “Many families abandon breakfast as they’re rushing to get both themselves and their kids out the door in the morning. Eggs are a fast, simple and cheap way to feed many mouths and there are loads of recipes that kids can learn and have fun with too,” Eggs ambassador Ian Thomas says. Ian, also known as The Egg Guy, has cooked with students in his hometown at Napier Boys High School for many years, and now wants to continue to promote these messages with school kids – starting in Christchurch. “Around 50 per cent of the children I meet have never cooked before and they lack the confidence to simply give it a go. Once they realise that they can create a meal on their own with eggs, their confidence skyrockets with many of them racing home after school to share their new skills with their family.” Health Sponsorship Council (HSC) programme manager Michelle Mako agrees that eggs can form an easy, tasty breakfast and provide a great start to the day. “Eating a wholesome, healthy breakfast gives kids the energy for sport and play, and improves concentration and focus in the classroom,” she adds. Eggs are not only tasty and simple to cook with; they also boast at least 11 different

Young Josh prevails CHRISTCHURCH’S Josh Atkins had a difficult final day on the Tour of Southland on Saturday before riding his way to the yellow jersey on a shortened last stage. Understood to be the youngest winner of the 55-year event and the first under-23 rider since 2001 to claim the title, the 19-year-old, who rides for Lance Armstrong’s Trek Livestrong team in the United States, fended off

several contenders to reach Invercargill with his lead intact. The penultimate stage, a 13km individual time trial at Winton, was cancelled after snow fell in the morning. There was thought given to scrapping the entire final day of the race. More snow and rain made for an uncomfortable finish for a battered peloton.

HISTORIC and classic motor racing doesn’t get much better than what a large crowd spectators witnessed at last weekend’s Wigram Revival at Powerbuilt Tools Raceway. From the impressive historic F5000 single seaters competing for the Lady Wigram Trophy and the very best in classic racing saloon cars through to the splendid lineup of Pre 89 racing bikes, it was

hard to find the time to wander the pits and appreciate the machinery at arm’s length. The weekend also celebrated 40 years of OSCA racing with races for Historic OSCA cars, many of which had been restored specially for the event and a Saturday night function allowed past and present drivers and supporters the chance to share tall tales and true.

Canadian Jay Esterer added his name to the Lady Wigram Trophy along with Graeme McRae who was also responsible for building the car he drove, the McRae GM1 and for other famous names such as Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Bruce McLaren and many others. Steve Ross of Dunedin was a close second and Christchurch driver Tony Richards was third in a Lola.

Dan the man wins

CUST apprentice farrier James Avery continued his dynamic run of form this season aboard Amarillo leading from start to finish to win the South Island One Day Eventing Championships Open Intermediate at the National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, at the weekend. Leader after the dressage, Avery was first out on the cross country, storming round the technical Nick Pyke-designed course to come home clear and inside the time, further increasing his lead in the national Massey University Young Rider Series. He also took home the prestigious Dusky Bay Cup for the Open Intermediate champion. Ohoka’s Katie Rankin on Time To Tango Too produced a strong performance to take second adding just 1.6 time penalties to her dressage score, with current national one day eventing champion Brent Jury on SE Big on the comeback trail finishing third.

HANNAH Hegarty, of St Patrick’s School in Kaiapoi, was part of the under 12 North Canterbury soccer team which came second at the South Island tournament held in Blenheim from October 14-16. The 12-year-old received the golden glove award for best goalie. This award was based on points allocated by the referee after each match. Hannah played for the under 14 girls Waimakariri red team this season and she has represented North Canterbury for the past three seasons. A special mention must go to Briar Guyan for her commitment with goalie training encouraging the girls and increasing Hannah’s skills and determination to succeed. During the summer months Hannah plays softball for Kaiapoi. Hannah’s parents and her big sister Courtney are very proud of her achievements.

IT was the combination of famous good looks and sporting prowess that spurred Kiwis to vote for Dan Carter in the Meridian People’s Choice competition. Throughout 2011 Meridian Energy asked New Zealanders to nominate who they thought deserved to be named New Zealand’s favourite rugby legend – Dan Carter – rugby and the votes came in the legend. thousands. Dan Carter took top honours in the competition gaining the most nominations to be named the winner, only narrowly beating out the inspirational Sir Colin Meads and rugby hero and captain Richie McCaw. On the nomination, Dan Carter said, “Thanks so much to all the fans out there who took the time to vote in this competition. “Getting this sort of recognition is pretty cool when you consider all the great players New Zealand has had.” To enter the competition people had to nominate someone who inspired them — whether a professional rugby player, a coach or manager, or even the person who first introduced them to rugby. Meridian asked people to tell them why they thought their nominee deserved the top slot. Nominees ranged from New Zealand rugby greats through to hard-working volunteers supporting the game at grassroots level.

CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High School student Anton Cooper, above, won the 2011 Sir Richard Hadlee award for Best Young Sportsman of the Year at the Sport Canterbury sports awards on Friday to add to others he has received recently. The award tops off a stellar season for the under 19 cross country mountain bike racer, with a haul of two World Cup wins and a world championship silver medal cementing his UCI number one ranking in this category. Cooper was in fine company at the CBS Canterbury Arena function, with other prestigious awards going to Richie McCaw for best sportsman of the year, Andrea Hewitt for best sportswoman (triathlon) and Sophia Batchelor for best young sportswoman (swimming). Cooper also won the Zonta Canterbury Secondary School Best Sportsman, and the Mainland Power North Canterbury Best Sportsman awards earlier in the week. (Photo: Shuttersport)
