Airport shares council’s highway concerns Tom Doudney

CHRISTCHURCH International Airport (CIAL) has joined Christchurch City Council in slamming western roading corridor plans which they believe will sever the link between the airport and the city. A section of linked roads which includes Johns, Russley, Masham and Carmen roads is proposed to be upgraded and changed to four lanes by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) with the aim of easing traffic congestion and better linking Belfast with Hornby. As a result, adjoining roads including Sawyers Arms Rd and Avonhead Rd will

traffic onto Memorial Ave and have their access to that section there were safety concerns of road cut off, while Wairakei about heavy vehicles mixing Rd’s access will be limited. with private vehicles including CIAL chief executive Jim tourists driving on the left for Boult said the airport shared the the first time. council’s concerns. “Around about the equivalent “The proposal as it stands of the city of Timaru comes by the NZTA takes away the Jim Boult onto the airport campus each connectivity of Russley and Johns Rd between the city and airport and, day and it’s a lot of people to try and bring in addition, to a wide number of smaller on via Memorial Ave. The proposal would also affect access to businesses and local residents. Mr Boult said the proposal would also Dakota Park, a new area of the airport set funnel “an enormous amount of extra to open for cargo unloading, emergency

services and future Antarctic operations. The airport had been told access would now be either cut off or by way of an “enormously expensive overbridge paid for largely by the airport. The airport continued to advocate for McLeans Island Rd and Pound Rd to be upgraded as an alternative route for through traffic, an option NZTA has previously investigated and deemed not an effective solution, according to its website. NZTA was contacted for comment by Mainland Press but did not respond before the newspaper went to print. Christmas generosity: Volunteers at St Christopher’s church in Avonhead, from left, Janice Giblet, Norma Hayman, Janette Sprott, Robyn Dawson, Margaret Amor, Sandra Robb and Jim Robb, pack up Christmas hampers to give to 200 families and elderly residents in the eastern suburbs. The church’s earthquake response coordinator Janette Sprott said the hampers would go to people they had worked with during the year. The goods were mostly donations from the congregation following an appeal they put out two weeks ago and they also had $600 sent from a church in Nelson to go towards hams and chickens. “We are hoping to include items they can have a Christmas meal out of, she said. OPPOSITION from the Police, outgoing Wigram MP Jim Anderton and members of the public has forced a new supermarket in Ilam to open without a liquor licence. The Ilam New World on Peer St opened almost two weeks ago but the shelves of its alcohol area have remained conspicuously empty. The matter is now set to be decided by the Liquor Licensing Authority at a hearing in Wellington next Tuesday. Owner Phillip Blackburn said not having the licence had been a bit of a setback.

“It’s a little bit frustrating given that everybody else around us has one and we’re getting a lot of feedback asking when we’re getting it.” Police alcohol strategy and enforcement team leader Sergeant Al Lawn said police had had enough of supermarkets driving down the price of alcohol and were taking a stand by opposing new licences and licence renewals. Evidence showed that the cheaper and more available alcohol was to society, the greater the harm it caused, he said. “What the supermarkets have done because of

their buying power they have forced down the price from the breweries and they continue to force that down.” Mr Anderton said he was concerned at the proliferation of liquor outlets around the country and the tendency of supermarkets to use cheap alcohol as a means of getting customers in the door. “If supermarkets haven’t noticed that abuse of alcohol is one of the most destructive problems we face, I don’t know what planet they live on.”

Christmas parades this weekend SANTA will make waves when he arrives aboard a surf lifesaving boat at the New Brighton Santa Parade on Saturday morning. From New Brighton beach the parade will wind its way around the town from the New Brighton Club and back to the library. New Brighton Project acting manager Rebecca May said the parade would give people a chance to have a fun day out with family and friends. “There’s something really neat about Christmas and the parade gives everyone a chance to do something together that has a positive focus.”

Meanwhile up to a quarter of the city is expected to line Riccarton Road on Sunday afternoon for the 64th Christchurch Santa Parade which follows a new route this year. Parade manager Pam Morris said while changes to the route had been frustrating she was pleased that the event was able to take place. Over 80 floats and 2500 people will take part in the parade. The New Brighton Santa Parade begins at 10:15am on Saturday while the Christchurch Santa Parade kicks off at 2pm on Sunday.

Church network helps eastern suburbs Samantha Early

PEOPLE travelling down Avonhead Road would have noticed the ever-changing blackboard which details the help given week in, week out by members of St Christopher’s church to residents of the eastern suburbs since the February 22 earthquake. What they may not realise is the story runs far deeper, to an evolving partnership between the Avonhead church and several others in the east and further afield. They’re part of Christchurch Community Response, which also includes St Ambrose in Aranui, St Andrew’s in North New Brighton, St Faith’s and Grace Vineyard in New Brighton, St Luke’s in South Brighton, the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch and the Church of the Saviour in Blockhouse Bay, Auckland. St Christopher’s parish manager Jill Short said it started when the Auckland church sent a team of tradespeople to work on minor home repairs soon after the February quake. Since then they forged stronger links with the other churches along with official and community groups. “They tell us what they need whether it’s extra food for the food bank or more door knockers or more tradespeople and then we put the call out, St Christopher’s earthquake response coordinator Janette Sprott said. A large part of their work is door-knocking residents and while initially it was checking they had food, water and supplies, they were now providing a listening ear for people dealing with red-zone land decisions, the

Overbridge to open THE first of four new overbridges on the new Christchurch southern motorway is due to open today. The New Zealand Tranport Agency said the new bridge would allow motorists to drive from Awatea Road into Dunbars Road and vice versa over the future motorway while access for Wigram Rd traffic will be via new T-intersections with ‘give way’ signs on either side of the bridge. Since January drivers have been using a detour around Carrs Road while this bridge was built. Work on the four-lane motorway between the Brougham Street – Collins Street intersection and Halswell Junction Road started in February 2010 and was due to finish on schedule in early 2013.

earthquake commission and insurance. “It’s being neighbourly really, helping them connect to agencies, Mrs Sprott said. Many needs have been met over the months, such as being given a freezer and generator at the same time as donated meat from a Cheviot farm. “Through our faith system it’s not coincidence, all of a sudden someone needs something and someone will offer it. It’s been incredible, Mrs Short said.

Mrs Sprott said a lot of people living in the city’s west didn’t often venture out east, however they had a core team of about 80 volunteers, many of whom visited regularly. She said their longer term challenge was to connect with other churches to strengthen their contribution. “It’s making people over here aware that there’s still work to be done and if they want to help they can call us and we can find work for them to do.

A DEAD heat in the Christchurch Central electorate has left Labour MP Brendon Burns and his National Party rival Nicky Wagner in limbo. After Saturday’s general election both MPs were sitting on 10,493 votes with an expected two week wait for special votes to be counted. Ms Wagner said she was hopeful of winning the seat. “I’m very satisfied with where we are at. “No one really knows for a fact what the outcome will be but generally speaking special votes follow the overall trend which has been towards National. “When I first arrived in the electorate there was a Labour majority of 14,000 and with each election I’ve whittled that away and now it’s down to zero. Ms Wagner said she was carrying on with her work as usual while waiting for the final result.

Mr Burns remained confident that the special votes would propel him to a win. “I’m reasonably confident that the special votes will see me through, many of those will be people who have left the areas like Avonside, Richmond and Shirley where I have done an enormous amount of work after the quakes.

Nicky Wagner

Brendon Burns

Mr Burns also said that February’s earthquake had impacted voting with many constituents leaving the Christchurch Central electorate. “Christchurch Central was marginal seat. I

only had a 935 vote majority and we’ve lost thousands of voters with the quakes and obviously we have seen a tide to national but I’m very proud of the work myself and my staff have done in the electorate. Mr Burns said he was busy helping constituents while awaiting the final vote count. “In the interim I’m back at work helping constituents as I’ve done over the last three years. “I’ve given it everything I’ve got and now we just await the outcome of the special vote process. Meanwhile, in a reversal of the 2008 election Labour’s Waimakariri MP Clayton Cosgrove trails his National Party opponent Kate Wilkinson by 395 votes with 2446 special votes still to be counted. As Mr Cosgrove is number eight on Labour’s list he is assured of a return to parliament regardless of the outcome of the final count.

So Brilliantly Clever by Peter Graham On June 22, 1954, in the depth of a southern winter, teenage friends Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker went for a walk in a park with Pauline’s mother. Half an hour later the girls returned alone. Honorah Parker lay in a sea of blood on a lonely track. She had been savagely murdered. With Parker and Hulme quickly arrested, the story made shock headlines around the world. International media flocked to New Zealand to cover the trial, and people everywhere struggled to understand what lay behind the crime. Were the girls insane, or simply evil? The Parker-Hulme murder remains one of the most interesting criminal cases of all time – especially since one of the murderers was unmasked as murder-mystery writer Anne Perrry, whose books today sell in the millions.

Old Buckey & Me by Jane Bowron Foreward by Pauline O’Regan On February 22, 2011, journalist and television reviewer Jane Bowron was living in her hometown of Christchurch when the city was struck by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake – just 5 months after a 7.1 quake. For the people of Christchurch, life would never be the same. As the historic city lay in ruins Bowron managed to find a phone, call her newspaper, and deliver a moving human account of the scene around her. In the months that followed, she continued to send regular dispatches on everyday life being lived in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Intimate, honest and suffused with unexpected humour, Bowron’s stories are a modern classic – a rare account of how human beings can survive and overcome even the most terrible of tragedies in the most ordinary of ways.

Putting our trust in experts THE dust is beginning to settle after another general election which has seen the predicted return of the Nats, the rise of the Greens, the re-emergence of a couple of ‘comeback kids’, John Banks and Winston Peters, and a decline for the Labour Party. A lot of people will be glad the election is now behind us and we can look towards Christmas. Thoughts of the earthquake are never too far away, however, and this week the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission has been considering the PGC building which collapsed on February 22 with the loss of 18 lives. Evidence has been given by some of those who worked in the building that they had serious concerns about the safety of the building after the September 4 and Boxing Day quakes. This was in spite of the fact that five engineering reports gave the

building a clean bill of health as safe to reoccupy. The last of these reports was dated January 27, less than a month before the tragedy. Beca Carter Holding & Ferner Ltd which assessed the building and its collapse on behalf of the Department of Building and Housing said in its evidence there were few signs that a collapse was a possibility. Early next year the royal commission will consider the CTV building in which 88 people died on February 22. Again the same scenario will likely be played out. Occupants will again state they did not feel safe, that after the September 4 quake cracks seemed to get bigger and that the building vibrated when trucks went past. The main question that will be asked then will be how did the building receive a green sticker? And we can ask, do experts always get things right?

Support new pool or wait 10 years Tom Doudney

SENTIMENTALITY around the QEII and Centennial pools should be put aside if Christchurch residents want to see a major new pool built within the next decade, Sport Canterbury chief executive Geoff Barry warns. Sport Canterbury has been working closely with Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) and Christchurch City Council around planning the location of future sports facilities in the city since the February 22 earthquake. Mr Barry said he was aware of the passion around the future of the QEII and Centennial pools but with city leaders and Government focused on rebuilding and revitalising the central city, the council’s proposed central sports hub was the best opportunity to get funding for a major pool prioritised. “Some people are saying [the city’s main pool] shouldn’t be in the middle and I might have some question marks myself about that but if we dig

Our Poll

our toes in and fight for it to be somewhere else we may not get it or we may not get it for 10 years.” The layout of sporting assets including pools had not been ideal even before the earthquake and since then the shift of population to different parts of the city had further underscored the need for residents to be open to change. “The city is going to be a very different place. A lot of schools are going to be different and work places are going to be different so we just can’t say we need to bring back QEII and bring back Centennial because they may not be relevant.” However he didn’t think the proposed Red Bus site was the best location for a sports hub and thought somewhere closer to Hagley Park would be better. Burwood-Pegasus Community Board chairperson Linda Stewart said there would be “one hell of a fight” if the decision was made not to restore QEII, which was extremely important

Century-old tree a threat to Fendalton house Gina McKenzie

A HUGE black beech tree may have spread its roots under Mary Bridgman’s earthquake-damaged home intensifying every aftershock but she can’t remove it as it is a protected tree. “Since the February earthquake all the land around my house has moved. I am sure the roots have spread under the foundations so every shake is intensified.” Mrs Bridgman said she felt unsafe as her bedroom was close to the tree which was within eight metres of her home. “I was so worried that I slept in the lounge for weeks after the earthquake. “I love trees and plants but this tree really has to go because it isn’t safe now.” Mrs Bridgman had already experienced one lucky escape with the tree when a large branch split off in 2009 and narrowly missed hitting the back of the house. After that incident, Mrs Bridgman contacted the Christchurch City Council and the arborist who braced the tree told her that the tree posed some risk to her house. Chirstchurch City Council manager of transport and greenspace Alan Beuzenberg said there had been no change in the council’s tree protection policy following the earthquakes. Mr Beuzenberg said a contractor was currently investigating whether any sizeable roots extended under Mrs Bridgman’s house. “As the base of the tree is approximately eight metres from the house it is unlikely that large roots would be present under the house, however the contractor will establish whether this is the case. “If they do, the contractor will root

AKAROA’S Gaiety Hall has been closed until further notice. Engineers completed a detailed engineering evaluation of the facility and recommended that the hall should close until it is earthquake strengthened. The venue’s main hall was given a green placard following the February 22

earthquake after it had a level-two engineering assessment. The supper room, which received a yellow placard, has been closed since the earthquake. The latest assessment, which was a more detailed inspection of the building, included an estimation of its capacity to withstand future earthquakes.

prune them and install root barriers next to the house.” Mrs Bridgman said she was still waiting for EQC to excavate the tree roots to determine how far they reached under her home.

“I would feel much better if the tree was just removed then I wouldn’t have to worry about it anymore. “It makes me worried every time there is a shake.”

Fendalton Library closed for repairs FENDALTON Library, which partly re-opened to the public last month, has closed for earthquake repairs. Repair work began this week and it is hoped the library will re-open in February next year. “The need for these repairs was identified after the building underwent a detailed engineering evaluation. The assessment is part of an ongoing process being carried out by the council to proactively ensure all its facilities undergo full engineering reviews after the earthquakes and aftershocks over the past year or so,” general manager community services Michael Aitken

said. “The library would have been closed over the Christmas and New Year public holidays anyway. As the contractor is available to start work now, closing the library now will allow us to get the repair work underway in earnest so we can re-open it in the New Year.” The nearby Papanui and Redwood libraries remain open, with the former now open seven days a week. A new central city library will open in Peterborough Street on Monday, December 19.

Other leading names to appear will include Phil Tataurangi, Steve Alker and Peter O’Malley. The event’s new status as a PGA Tour of Australasia event means international stars, who would have to pay the higher cost of appearance fees for being in the world’s top 50, have stayed away. As a result, this year’s field includes a larger number of New Zealanders and Australians than in recent years.

WHEN February’s earthquake struck Ginny Larson swung into action to ensure that St Albans, Mairehau and Shirley residents remained connected. The St Albans Baptist Church where Mrs Larson is based became a community hub in the weeks and months following the earthquake. “We had power and facilities so we were able to help with providing meals and coordinating relief efforts. “Everything was delivered to us and then we organised how to distribute it. “It was a real team effort with lots of people pitching in. A drop-in lunch set up in response to the earthquake proved popular with those attending receiving not only a meal but also advice and social interaction. “We had a door-knocking campaign to over 7000 households to check on residents. “We found that 250 of those people were quite vulnerable and lonely so the drop-in lunch was part of a response to that community need. Mrs Larson said that the social interaction aspect of the lunches was vital for the 60 residents who attended on a daily basis. “For some elderly residents it was the only time they would talk to someone all day. Having that contact was really vital for them. As the months went by the relief effort shifted its focus from emergency assistance to helping people get back on their feet again. “The past few months have been a transition period where we’ve moved from the more urgent immediate needs to helping people become more independent again. “It’s quite important to give people the resources to slowly move back into their pre-quake routines and to find ways to help them do that. Mrs Larson said she felt hopeful about the future of Christchurch as people had become more connected to their local communities and grown closer to each other. “The best thing to come out of the earthquake has been the amazing connections people have made with each other. “Getting to know your neighbours and local community is all part of the healing process as people get together and talk about what has happened.

THE dome in the events village at North Hagley Park has played host to all sorts of events this year and now it’s the venue for a blood drive with a difference. The New Zealand Blood Service has organised a Big Top Blood Drive next Thursday, December 8 between 11.30am and 4.30pm as a way to celebrate the end of a challenging year in Canterbury and attract new blood donors. Blood donor recruiter Jane Condell said because of the February 22 earthquake the service lost a large number of blood collection venues like the Millennium hotel and the Salvation Army citadel. Many city workers were regular blood donors and the service also had to cancel some of its collections at high schools because school timetables were disrupted with site-sharing and altered hours. Ms Condell said this amounted to about 30 percent of Christchurch donors who they had to track down again. “People have had other things on their minds and donating blood has been sitting on the backburner for a lot of them and a lot of them are feeling that they can come back now and start donating blood, she said. The blood service was hoping to attract young people who weren’t able to donate at school and had finished exams, by providing free entertainment from DJs and radio stations at the Hagley Park event. People will also be able to walk through the dome and see the process of donating blood. She said although less than five percent of eligible New Zealanders were blood donors, the blood service had managed to avoid a shortage.

“Sometimes we need more blood groups than others, we collect to demand basically and we have managed to keep doing that, we have thought outside the square and worked very hard to achieve that. Those interested in giving blood at the Big Top Blood Drive, were asked to register ahead at www.nzblood. co.nz or call 0800 give blood.

Hero awarded for bravery COASTGUARD Canterbury volunteer Nelson Colyer was awarded the Rescue Vessel Volunteer of the Year Award at the National Coastguard awards dinner held in Nelson on Saturday. Mr Colyer was recognised for the pivotal role he played in the successful rescue of the tug Rakanui when it foundered off Motanau in April. After taking control of the vessel and pumping water from above and below deck, Mr Colyer stayed on board and brought the vessel and crew safely back to Lyttelton.

Coastguard New Zealand president Colin Small said Mr Colyer received the award, not only for his heroic role and selfless commitment to this rescue, but for his enduring commitment to Coastguard with five years of volunteering under his belt. “Nelson is one of the more senior Canterbury crew in age yet he continues to show great determination, attitude, stamina and grit. Nothing is too much trouble and he continues to set a good example to the rest of the members” said Mr Small.

The students from Opawa School raised more than $100 for the refuge, which they intend to present to the organisation this week. Ride leader Shane Henry of the Patriots motorcycle club, which is made from current and former army, navy and air force personnel, said people didn’t have to experience violence to understand just how terrible the effects could be on women and children. “As men we have to understand we are part of the solution. By standing up, and speaking out about it we can send a message to men and boys throughout New Zealand, that violence is no longer the norm, and that relationships based on respect are much more satisfying and rewarding.” Rider Richard Bradley said they were glad to be in Christchurch on White Ribbon Day itself knowing the stress and depravation the people have been enduring since the earthquakes.

THE White Ribbon Riders rolled in to Opawa School on their Harley Davidson motorbikes to promote a message of non-violence last Friday. The riders were part of a week-long nationwide motorcycle ride to promote the White Ribbon campaign run by the Families Commission, spreading the message that violence towards women was not okay. It was the first time the ride had come to the South Island and over its course the riders made several stops in Christchurch. Christchurch Women’s Refuge chief executive Nicola Woodward said having the men stand up and support the city’s women was amazing. “They are giving their time and leading from the front and, on behalf of Christchurch Women’s Refuge, I’d like to thank them for their commitment to ending violence against women.”

Outdoor chess set ďŹ lls Sydenham gap A GIANT outdoor giant chess set has been set up on a vacant site in Sydenham as a temporary replacement for the popular Cathedral Square set, which is currently inaccessible. Canterbury University management students Elliot Faulkner, Joel Smith, Lisa Hoffmann, Murray Swann and Oleg Sheremetov came up with the idea for it after hearing a lecture by Gap Filler co-founder Coralie Winn. Gap filler was started in response to the September earthquake and was revised and expanded following the February 22 quake. It aims to activate vacant sites with creative projects for the community to make the city more dynamic and vibrant. The students worked with Gap Filler to create a community space for the oversize chess set on a vacant site next to the relocated Honey Pot CafĂŠ in Colombo Street, Sydenham. “The chess set is open to the public and brings some much-needed activity to one of the many vacant sites in Sydenham,â€? Ms Winn said. “The chess pieces will be locked in a chest on site with the key able to be signed out at the Honey Pot CafĂŠ next door. It is free to play.â€? The chess set will remain on the site until the land-owner is ready to rebuild next year.

Christchurch Earthquake Awards WHO IS YOUR EARTHQUAKE HERO? Christchurch City Council would like to honour our earthquake heroes. The Council wishes to recognise the many community acts of kindness, service or heroism during and following the earthquakes of 4 September 2010 and 22 February 2011. Nominations are now open for the Christchurch Earthquake Awards. You can nominate your earthquake hero by completing a nomination form. For details of how to nominate and to download the nomination form please visit www.ccc.govt.nz or pick up a nomination form at any Council Service Centre. Nominations close on Friday 23 December 2011. The awards will be presented by Mayor Bob Parker at a special commemorative event in February 2012.

Working together: NZ Contractors Federation Canterbury chairman Kenny Corrigan, left, and Federation chief executive Jeremy Sole explain the workings of a digger to Mayor Bob Parker.

Contractors rally around to support Christchurch THE New Zealand Contractors’ Federation has recently presented Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker with a cheque for $27,000 to be added to the Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund. Federation chief executive Jeremy Sole said the funds were raised by members at their annual

conference in Rotorua. A major portion of the donated funds were raised through an auction of construction equipment donated by a generous industry supplier. Canterbury NZCF branch chairman Kenny Corrigan said that the federation has around

120 members in Christchurch who are involved in all aspects of the city’s rebuild efforts with their help ranging from repairs and demolitions to rebuilds of all sizes. The NZCF represents around 600 civil and general contracting firms nationwide.

Court Jesters to celebrate 21st birthday THE Court Jesters have an entertaining weekend full of humour planned to celebrate their 21st birthday. Formed in 1990, the Jesters will celebrate using the usual embarrassing photos and stories, created with input and direction

from their audience. “The Jesters’ 21st will include a twist on the usual rituals of speeches inspired by the audience, embarrassing photos of every Jester from 1990 and the cutting of the cake at the end of the night. In this instance

though, the audience will dictate the direction of the party,” Jesters manager and performer Kirsty Gillespie said. The event begins at 8pm on Friday and Saturday at Heaton Intermediate.

NEXT STEPS FOR IAG CUSTOMERS IN THE FLAT RESIDENTIAL GREEN ZONE AREAS Government confirms if you are in technical category 1 (grey), 2 (yellow) or 3 (blue)

If you have no foundation damage, the technical categories have no effect on your repairs. If you have foundation damage the following steps will apply

IF TC1 Some minor additional foundation works may be required, e.g. providing more reinforcing in the foundation.

IF TC2 The Department of Building and Housing has set clear guidelines for foundation repair or rebuild.

IF TC3 Site-specific engineering solutions will be required, and a geo-tech engineer will be engaged to report on the ground conditions at the site. Based on this report, and the type and style of your home, a structural engineer will design suitable foundations.

If the damage to your home is under $100,000 + GST from each event, EQC will pay for, and manage, your repairs including those to your foundations.

If the damage to your home is over EQC’s agreed cap for your house, the following will apply.

The Government last month announced three new categories for residential foundation designs for flat residential green zone land. The three categories, defined as TC1, TC2 and TC3 or grey, yellow and blue, are based on how the land is likely to behave during a major earthquake. They specify the different types of foundation work required when repairing or rebuilding homes. To check the technical category of your home visit www.landcheck.org.nz.

EQC is currently assessing land damage.

You retain ownership of the land, but cannot rebuild on site.

IAG will assess your home and discuss settlement options with you.

EQC deems land economic to remediate and completes remediation if necessary.

IAG will work with you to assess and repair or rebuild your home. We are currently in the process of assessing all uninhabitable homes. Once we understand the implications of any necessary land remediation, we will organise geotechnical assessments where and when required. A scope of works will be created for the repair or rebuild of your home, if additional foundation work is required the associated cost will be included in the scope of work. Where possible, we will begin repairing and rebuilding.

IAG3011MP

EQC deems land uneconomic to remediate and settles with you on your land.

ur na on’s health is improving, with an increase in the number of adults ea ng two or more servings of fruit per day, according to a recently published Ministry of Health report on nutri on. “These results are very encouraging for us and have served as the impetus for a new focus this year,” says 5+ A Day general manager Paula Dudley. “While 90 per cent of our kids have the 5+ A Day message, we are now challenging adults to improve their intake of fruit and vegetables for be er health.” With approximately 66 per cent of adults currently ea ng three or more servings of vegetables each day and 60 per cent ea ng two or more servings of fruit, the 5+ A Day Charitable Trust is now on a mission to increase the number to 85 per cent of Kiwis ea ng more than five servings of fruit and vegetables a day by 2015. Throughout November, the 5+ A Day team has been spreading their message that fresh fruit and vegetables are real easy, have real value, and

are real fast for workplaces to encourage New Zealanders to eat more fruit and vegetables during the work day. Claire Turnbull, who runs Mission Nutri on and is the nutri onist for Healthy Food Guide Magazine and Newstalk ZB, says it’s worth bearing in mind that a third of the adult diet is consumed in the workplace and with a li le forward planning it can go a long way to helping you be healthier and more produc ve. “It can be as simple as packing some cherry tomatoes or a carrot in the morning for a healthy, tasty snack or keeping a fruit bowl on your desk for those a ernoon cravings,” she says. Claire has devised some prac cal lunch ideas that are healthy and cost-effec ve alterna ves to takeaways, as well as being quick and easy to assemble. Other recommenda ons include taking ingredients to work to assemble just before ea ng for quick fresh lunches, preparing veggies the night before while making dinner, and packing le overs for the next day.

“Varying the type of protein such as egg, chicken, and falafel will add interest and variety to daily lunches,” says Claire. “An added tablespoon of hummus for some extra flavour and nutri on to a sandwich or alongside a salad will go down as a treat and instead of the pita, try a wholemeal wrap as another healthy alterna ve.” Evidence shows that a diet high in fruit and vegetables protects against cancer and cardiovascular disease, assists in the preven on of Type 2 diabetes, and posi vely affects weight loss. “These lunch ideas are not only good for your health, but they are also great for the waistline and the wallet.” Fruit challenge: Adults are now being encouraged to eat more fruit and vegetables.

the sooner an ambulance arrives the be er the outcome for the pa ent. Myth eight: If someone is having a seizure, put something in their mouth (such as a spoon) to stop them bi ng their tongue. This used to be a technique that many people thought was a good thing to do. But, it can cause more harm than good. An object forced into a person’s mouth while they are having a seizure can break teeth, injure the pa ent’s tongue or mouth (which could cause breathing difficulty) and can cause injury to the rescuer. Protect the pa ent from injuring themselves (for example on objects around them) during the seizure. Once the seizure has finished, roll them onto their side and stay with them. Call an ambulance if they don’t wake up a er a few minutes or if this is the first me they have had a seizure. Myth nine: If someone feels faint, put their head between their legs. When a person feels faint or actually faints, the brain is not ge ng enough blood. It is very easy for the person to fall – even if they are si ng on a chair. Pu ng their head between their legs will not help. Lie them on the floor, raise their legs a li le, and they will usually recover very quickly. If they don’t recover quickly, call 111 for an ambulance. If the person stops breathing start CPR. Myth ten: A stroke is not an emergency. A stroke occurs when an artery supplying the brain with blood becomes blocked. A stroke is an emergency. When a person has a stroke they will o en have difficulty speaking or they will have weakness on one side of their body (one side of their face will become droopy or one arm or leg will become weak). If you think a person is having a stroke dial 111 for an ambulance. The reason for this is that there are treatments available in hospital for stroke that must be given within a few hours if they are to be successful.

First Aid

K

eeping your first aid skills up to date is important. O en, we think we know what to do in a first aid situa on, but we don’t quite get it right. In last week’s Mainland Press last week, St John touched on myths one to five. This week they wrap up with myths six to 10.

Myth six: If a child drinks poison, make them vomit. Making the child vomit could cause serious internal damage, par cularly when the poison is a corrosive such as bleach or dishwashing powder. The best thing to do is keep the child calm, wipe residue away from the mouth with a damp cloth, and call 111 for an ambulance. You can give sips of water – as much as the child will drink, but don’t force them to drink as this may make them vomit.

Myth seven: I feel some discomfort in my chest, but it is just indiges on. A heart a ack occurs when an artery supplying the heart with blood becomes blocked. The most common symptom associated with a heart a ack is chest discomfort and some mes this is mistaken as indiges on. The chest discomfort o en feels like a weight, or a heavy feeling or a ght squeezing feeling in the middle of the chest. The discomfort may also be felt going into the neck, jaw or arms (par cularly the le arm). If a person has chest discomfort that does not ease a er 15 minutes, or they are in very severe pain, call 111 for an ambulance. They might be having a heart a ack and

A moving musical journey AUCKLAND ensemble Carolina Moon will bring their fiery ancient melodies to St Albans in December. The band’s recently released third album, Mother Tongue, fuses different cultures from the past and present. Carolina Moon’s evocative songs combine sensual melodies with songs and rhythms from the surrounding tide of musical inspirations - Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic - with original jazz-tinged world sounds and grooves. Carolina spent her formative

years on the London jazz and world music scene and in 2002 she studied voice and raga in Mumbai. Her Shaman’s Kiss album was nominated in the 2003 Australian Jazz Awards. Her second recording, East of the Sun, was released in 2007 and she has performed extensively in several countries such as in the United Kingdom, Australia, India, China, and the Greater Pacific. The ensemble’s concert will be held on December 14 at 7.30pm at the Rutland Street Church auditorium at 12 Rutland Street. Tickets are $15 each.

Top agents sell homes in any market “There is no doubt that the real estate market has been tough in the past year, in an environment of consumer cau on that has reduced sales volumes and the fallout of our Canterbury quakes,â€? says Topps Realtors of Harveys owner/director Gavin Topp. Yet many agents are s ll selling homes at their usual clip, meaning their share of the available business has actually increased. It is easy to ďŹ nd these skilled, hard working agents: they are very prominent in their market in terms of the “for saleâ€? signs and adver sements. These are some of the clear signs of success, for these agents are s ll doing business in the toughest of markets. Agents like Topp Realtors of Harveys have special skills that beneďŹ t their vendors. They are be er at marke ng. They give straight, knowledgeable advice best suited to the situa on. Crucially, Topp Realtors of Harveys is be er at nego a on, to achieve the best possible price for your home. They believe in “customers for lifeâ€? and they keep in touch a er the sale. Their eorts are rewarded with more referrals and more lis ngs. Vendors know they need agents with a track record of success, and in the customers 'ight to quality', the market share of Topps Realtors of Harveys con nues to grow. On a local note Topps Realtors of Harveys are a member of the Hooker/Harveys Group and as such can bring people into contact with their 700 agencies in Australia, New Zealand and PaciďŹ c Islands.

Some of Topps Realtors of Harveys clear indicators of success:

24 day (list to sell) mul oer programmes. We are enjoying 94.7% success rate. Mul oers on all of our deadline sales with excited sa sďŹ ed sellers. Huge increases in vendors’ home exposure by pictorial posters in our window display. Eec ve corporate page exclusive to Bishopdale, Bryndwr, Burnside proper es (and other loca ons) in the ever eec ve Realtor magazine.

“At Topps Realtors of Harveys we earned our good reputa on the hard way. Striving for excellence in a compe ve world may not be easy but we con nue to do it, Gavin says. “That’s why we can deliver be er results because we have your best interests for you at heart. A wise choice – home sales and property management.
