Rubble pile riles Sydenham

SYDENHAM business owners are upset that earthquake rubble is being dumped on neighbouring land by a contracting company in breach of the Resource Management Act. The first that business owners in Cass Street knew of the operation was on Monday when trucks started bringing in piles of rubble and dumping it on railway land beneath the Durham St overbridge next door. After a week, they are fed up with the dust, water and noise sweeping across the fence every day. Environment Canterbury (ECan) regional manager of Resource Manangement Act monitoring and compliance Brett Aldridge said the contracting company was allowed to stockpile material in its warehouse on site but a
resource consent for its outdoor activities was still “in train” and had not yet been granted. ECan investigators had talked to company owner Chris Skelly on Tuesday but the activities had continued and they were due to talk with him again. “He’s doing a job that needs to be done. We don’t want to get in the way of any of the recovery work that is going on. However the flip side is we need to make sure everything is above board.” On Thursday Mr Skelly reacted angrily to the presence of Mainland Press on the boundary of the site and said the company’s activities had all been approved. told Mainland Press the organisation’s demolition department was working with Skelly Holdings regarding the situation but ECan had accredited the company for its demolition work and it was a compliant contractor. Sydenham business owner Tony Tamakehu of The Chain Man said two of his workers had asthma and the dust was both a nuisance and a health hazard. “The council promoted Sydenham as a bit of an up thing,” he said in reference to Christchurch City Council’s master-planning of Sydenham. “Then they’ve welcomed a dump to move into our back door which is not all that flash.” Clarity Press owner Sue Mitchell said the
dust was affecting their business operations. “The dust is terrible. You go out there and it is just blowing in your eyes, in your face.” The company is one of three printing companies in the street and employee Jake Mitchell said that every time the dust got into their printing machines they had to be stopped and cleaned before they could be used again. Underground Coffee owner Pete Davies said as a food and beverage company, having the dust blowing into their premises was a concern. Mainland Press understands that measures to reduce the impact on neighbouring businesses and to prevent dust are intended to be implemented in the near future.

Burwood/Pegasus by-election
Chris Tobin editor@mainlandpress.co.nz
Some of us haven’t a clue NOT having been to the quake-damaged eastern suburbs for awhile, when I went to Burwood for an interview on Wednesday it proved to be a wake-up call as to what some people are going through. Turning into the street where I had my appointment the first impression was the eerie stillness. The first sign of life was a truck which lumbered around a corner squirting out water over the damaged road to keep the dust down. Nearby a group of workmen languidly focused on a large hole in the middle of

the road from which pumps and hoses protruded. Travelling further on nearly all the houses seemed to be empty; some gave the impression they had simply been abandoned. Windows were shuttered, tall grass grew up to the windowsills, small piles of liquefaction were still evident, portaloos dotted intermittently down the street, the road was rutted and the car bounced around like a rubber ball. Welcome to a housing red zone!
People living in other parts of the city relatively untouched by the earthquakes (like me), haven’t really a clue as to what some people have been and are still going through. Basic services such as water and sewerage systems are just available to a “limited” capacity, I was told. The woman I interviewed said it was “very strange” living in this environment. A much loved home, a street, an area she and others liked living in will soon be flattened, blotted
out and gone forever. That does create a strange feeling, as if a part of their lives has been harshly cut away from them. But even in the midst of this depressing scene and it does sound clichéd – the human spirit still shines out. This was epitomized, believe it or not, by a number of cones circling one of those ubiquitous road holes. Around several of the cones someone had draped Christmas tinsel. The tinsel shimmered brilliantly in the late morning sun.

NOMINATIONS for ward councillor for the Burwood/Pegasus ward are now open and will close at noon on Thursday December 22. A by-election will be held in February 2012 due to Christchurch City councillor Chrissie Williams’s recent resignation. Nomination forms are available from the New Brighton library, New Brighton pier building, 213 Marine Parade, New Brighton; the Shirley service centre, 36 Marshland Road, Shirley and at the Council’s reception office, 53 Hereford Street. The preliminary electoral roll for the Burwood/Pegasus board is now open. The roll will close on December 22.
Election a yawn with few surprises THERE is so much I wanted out of this election but it failed miserably on many fronts. As I settled myself down in front of the telly to watch all the drama, it ended up being quite predictable. What did they honestly expect us to believe that the deals done in Epsom and Ohariu were going to show anything other than surprise, surprise, Banks and Dunne are in. Oh please what an insult, the charade that has played out over the past weeks. What is worse our elected prime minister and MPs keep joking about it- taking the mickey at our gullibility is how I see it. This brings out one of the worse parts of MMP, that two
people who get into parliament through the back door, (a favour by a party) then get baubles of office when less than two percent of the country voted for them. Democracy has put Peters back with eight MPs and the triumphant Greens with nearly 20% of the party vote collectively and they get the backbenches. Surely we can find a better proportional system. We are constantly spoon-fed with glossy magazine stories, papers filled with photo ops, the constant spin of media releases and staged briefings. My job means, unfortunately, I have to listen to talkback radio and I find it amazing how many

people parrot back what they have heard. Instead of being a vehicle for callers to air their views, the hosts become purveyors of their own political bias. So I was not surprised at the result. The only thing that astonished
me was the result in Christchurch Central and Waimakariri. Politics can be so cruel; you work your arse off for the community under the most trying of circumstances, to be told they didn’t like your negativity. People have short memories and time will tell if those constituents will be better served. To Brendon and Clayton, I don’t believe that true bipartisanship was applied during your time in opposition. It should have! You served your communities well. Thank you. To our Canterbury MPs you have a job to do – together. Forget the politics put people first.

Harvard returns Air force museum begins new era AFTER an absence of 19 months, the former Royal New Zealand Harvard NZ1050 will return to its position overlooking the corner of the Main South Road and Harvard Avenue this morning. The aircraft was placed at the entrance of what was then RNZAF Base Wigram in June 1973 to mark the 50th anniversary of the formation of the New Zealand Permanent Air Force in 1923 and the purchase by the Government of Sockburn Airfield from the Canterbury Aviation Company a week later. The last time NZ1050 was taken down was in 1999 when some basic maintenance work was carried out. However concerns over spreading corrosion within the aircraft’s structure caused by air pollution and exposure to weather extremes over the past 37 years resulted in the RNZAF memorial being taken down in May last year for a thorough makeover. Much of the structural work was completed by Pioneer Aero Ltd at Ardmore, with other assistance provided by the RNZAF. The task of reassembling and painting the aircraft has been carried out by the museum’s technical staff and volunteers who have prepared it to a very high standard. NZ1050 will be officially rededicated at a ceremony next Wednesday beneath the aircraft.

THE START of a $14 million expansion at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Wigram will allow “hidden treasures of the country’s aviation history to be displayed. Royal New Zealand Air Force chief Air Vice Marshal Peter Stockwell said the first stage of the project was an $11 million 4200sqm aircraft display gallery that once completed would allow air force history that had been stored away to be shown. This included a range of material and artefacts both at the museum and in hangars at Weedons. Air Vice Marshal Stockwell was speaking at a ceremony on Wednesday to mark the start of the project which once completed will have a building covering 6500sqm with a restoration area adjoining the aircraft display gallery. “This (Wigram) is our spiritual home, to come back to this site and recognise this with the development of the museum is a great opportunity, he said. The Air Force Museum Trust chairman Air Vice Marshal (Rtd) Peter Adamson said expansion plans had first been considered in 2003 and it had been a long process getting to the present stage. A more formal ceremony with the unveiling of a plaque on a date closer to the time the RNZAF celebrates its 75th anniversary early next year will be held, he said. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said the city council provided $1.5 million to assist the project. “I know how much this (project) means to a lot of people not just across the city but around New Zealand. Ever since the February 22 earthquake Air Vice Marshal Stockwell said the air force museum had been providing space and support for museums around Canterbury and also for several organisations. “I think it is great that we are able to provide that support. We look forward to provide capacity for organisations over a number of years yet as the recovery goes on.

Tips and tricks to make the most out of watering W
ater is the lifeline of the garden, lawn, vege, and flower gardens. Without it, very few plants would have the ability to
bloom. With the water restric ons in the CCC, all is not lost for gardeners. In fact, it's actually helping educate people how to water. Most people who water do so ineffec vely. Generally, it’s because they don’t know any be er. A li le water everyday is one of the worst things you can do to your plants. Note that regular light watering encourages the roots to stay at the surface of the soil looking for water, which isn’t ideal, as these plants o en become top-heavy and can flop and fall over because they can’t anchor themselves deeply enough into the soil. Moisture is lost through the leaves, bark, and roots in the soil. Wind is one of the most moisturesapping elements we have to deal with. Symptoms of inadequate plant watering are poor plant performance, plant death, visible water run-off without penetra ng the soil, and dry spots along with increased levels of pest and disease.
The two golden rules about understanding water in my book are: 1. When and how to water 2. Mulch. Mulch is like a godsend to the garden. It helps limit weeds, looks dy, and helps the soil retain moisture and keep the root zones cooler. This enables the roots to live a more stress-free life and get on with growing rather than just surviving. Numerous things can be used as mulch such as manures, straw, and compost. Garden centres have a huge range to choose from. One of the best I found is made by sphagnum Moss called Magic Mulch. It’s a blend of Sphagnum and seaweed. The sphagnum absorbs so much moisture and makes it available to the roots of the plants as they require and the seaweed component feeds the plants. Talk about a win-win situa on! I used it in my strawberry patch this season and the berries have never been
be er. It is also helpful to ensure your soil retains moisture by including we ng agents. SaturAid is a granular soil we er that helps prevent soil from drying out and can be used in garden beds as well as container plants. SaturAid draws water down into the root zone where it is needed most, resul ng in stronger and healthier plants.
Rachel Vogan The Happy Gardener
When and how to water Do the finger test. If your finger is dry when you pull it out of the soil, water the soil. Signs to watch out for are wil ng leaves and the soil simply feeling dry. The feel and appearance of soil is a good guide. A garden is best watered in the morning or late a ernoon. Never put your plants to bed wet as this can cause mildew and mould problems. Avoid watering in the middle of excep onally hot days. Water droplets on the leaves on hot days can cause leaf burn. Water the soil, not the plant. This goes for pots and containers too. The roots take up most of the water and the leaves get a li le, but nothing in comparison to the root system. Water thoroughly and DEEPLY every few days; two to three mes a week is all that is required. Deep watering encourages the plant’s roots to seek down for water, which firmly

anchors the plants to the ground. With baskets and containers that dry out completely, the best way to rehydrate them is to place the whole container in a bucket or trough of water and let the water soak up through the soil and root zone. This may take hours, but your plants will love you for it.

Water storing and recycling ideas: • Collect rain water from the roof. This can be as simple as placing a large drum under the drainpipes at a few points around your home or garage. The water will store for months and months and is ideal for the garden. • Collect grey water from the shower, bath, and washing machine. As long as no major bleaches are used in the washing, this water is fine for the garden. Collec ng this water can be a li le more challenging, although for me it’s easy as I can get to my drainpipe easily. I have put a larger hose over the drainpipe and the water goes into another large container.

The Auckland band will perform hits from their new album World Comes Calling which debuted in the New Zealand charts at number four. The band had spent the past few years touring in Australia and America and was really excited to be home. Canterbury artists to exhibit at home CANTERBURY landscape artists Sally Hope, Ben Woollcombe and Henry Hope will be exhibiting oil and watercolour paintings together at Sally Hope’s Merivale home over the weekend. The Hopes are descendants of the well known water colourist Esther Hope who painted extensively in the Mackenzie Country and Europe during the early 1900s, while Ben Woollcombe, a good friend and painting companion of Austen Deans, has painted in Peel Forest, South Canterbury, since 1984. Ben also travels and paints extensively in the U.S. and Europe. The exhibition will include large oil paintings, sensitive water colours and small works on linen. Sally Hope will be showing small oil paintings of South
Canterbury and the Mackenzie Country painted recently while living in Peel Forest. Ben Woollcombe’s work uses the subtleties of water colour to portray the southern light, while Henry Hope, brother of Sally, has used mark making to capture the waterways of Christchurch and the Mackenzie Country with oil on larger canvases. The idea to exhibit in the suburbs came about both as a reaction to the lack of gallery space in the city and to allow patrons to view original art work in a relaxed domestic situation. The exhibition is at 93 Office Road, Merivale on Friday from 5.30pm, and on Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 4pm.

Canterbury should say thanks to NZ Golf for faith CANTABRIANS owe a huge debt to New Zealand Golf for their faith in our region Plans were already in place for the major golf event prior February 22. How easy it would have been for New Zealand Golf to find a new home for the men’s and women’s amateur golf championships for 2011. Let's face it. Many other event organisers quickly turned tail and abandoned plans for events to be held in Christchurch such as the 2011 Rugby World Cup organisers’ decision to take the hosting rights awarded to Christchurch away. To NZG's credit, they continued on with

Rising athlete: Jordan Soli shows his recent win.
Coming champ JORDAN Soli, a year 2 student at Kaiapoi Borough School, started trampolining earlier this year. Seven-year-old Jordan perfected his red badge routine soon after he began trampolining at Ice Trampoline Sports in Rangiora. In April, he competed in the Canterbury club competition and won the recreational boys’ red badge champion award on both the trampoline and the double mini-trampoline. Jordan then went on to represent his school in the primary school’s competition in August and won. Last month he competed in his second recreational badge competition and placed first in the individual boys trampoline blue badge and double mini trampoline. He was also named overall boys champion for 2011. Jordan also enjoys running and recently received the 7-year-old boys’ sprint champion award at Kaiapoi Borough School’s junior sports day. He plays soccer during winter and scored 34 goals for his team this year. He also enjoys playing touch rugby and golf. Jordan and his parents would like to extend a big thank you to Nigel Humphries from Ice Trampoline Sports for coaching Jordan this year. Congratulations Jordan! We’re sure you have a bright sporting future ahead of you.
Young cricket stars capped Tom Doudney
A GROUP of 24 budding junior cricket talents received their Canterbury caps at a ceremony at the Burnside Cricket Clubrooms last night. The year 8 primary school players have been selected to form two teams of 12 to take part in the annual South Island primary schools tournament, which will be held in Invercargill from January 8 – 13. Wayne Parker, who will be coaching one of the teams, said the tournament was the pinnacle for junior cricket players in the South Island. Both teams will be in action this Sunday for the first time before the tournament. Parker’s ‘black team’ will be playing a North Canterbury selection at Mandeville Park, Ohoka while the ‘red team’ will be playing Mid Canterbury in Ashburton. At the tournament, the Christchurch teams will be joined by sides from Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, Buller, West Coast, Nelson, Marlborough, North Otago, Dunedin Metro, Southland Country, Southland Metro, Canterbury Country, and Central Otago.
million Australian dollars in appearance money to attract a stellar field of golfers who were already in the “lucky country” anyway for the Presidents Cup event a week later. This year’s NZ Open may not have the strongest field ever assembled, but NZG deserves a huge pat on the back for not only keeping the tournament alive, but also because they have stated clearly that Canterbury still exists and as such deserves the chance to host it. Come on Cantabrians, reward their bold decision by turning up in big numbers to repay the faith they have shown in us.
