Santa attends special party Chris Tobin

TO the delight of children and those of more senior years Santa dropped into Paparoa Street School in Papanui for a special Christmas party on Sunday. Children dashed to greet the famous figure when he came out of the skies aboard a helicopter and landed on the school playing field. One boy offered him a hot dog, which Santa politely declined, while others enthusiastically shook his hand. The occasion was the annual Child Cancer Foundation Christmas party which for the first time was organised by Charlotte Smulders, a director of Mainland Press and publisher of CC magazine, who took over the role from Diana Robinson and her husband Robbie who both passed away late last year. the parties for over 20 years. “Last year I was fortunate to spend invaluable time with Diana to learn from her many years of experience in hosting the party,” Mrs Smulders said. “It has been a lot of work and in the last month it has been incredibly busy. “But the highlight was seeing all those little children smiling and having a wonderful day.” Ninety children and another 100 family members were expected to attend the party from all over Canterbury but this number was slightly down which Mrs Smulders said was attributable to illness keeping some of them away. “I think that everyone should have a designated area to protest in.”

“No I don’t think they should be allowed to camp there.”

“No, they definitely should not be allowed. There should be one rule for everybody.”

“No, they shouldn’t. No one else is allowed to freely camp there. The authorities are up in arms about people with motor homes camping wherever they please, so why should the protesters be allowed to?”

“No, I don’t think so because it is unfair. People in camper vans are not allowed to park overnight even though they have onboard facilities like toilets and water. Tyre marks do less damage than tent peg marks.”

“No they shouldn’t. There should be one rule for all. We in Christchurch have more on our plates to worry about than protesting about capitalism.”

A TOUGH year living in the red zone and coming to terms with her house having to be demolished is ending on a happier note for Anna Filippochkina of Burwood. Mrs Filippochkina received a prestigious Pushkin medal at a special ceremony in Russia last month receiving her award from the Russian president Dmitry Medvedev and with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in attendance. The ceremony took place in the city of Nizhny Novgorod. “I was in Moscow for a world conference regarding the status of the Russian language,” Mrs Filippochkina said. “Before I left Christchurch I had a phone call from the embassy who told me during my stay in Russia you’ll receive this medal. It was a big surprise for me.” Only 10 people are awarded the medal each year for their achievements in culture, education and health sciences as well as for the study and preservation of Russian language and culture. The Pushkin Medal has been named for 19th century poet Alexander Pushkin who is considered the founder of modern Russian literature. “It was exciting, very exciting,” Mrs

Filippochkin said of the presentation. “It was a once in a lifetime experience.” When she first arrived in Christchurch 12 years ago Mrs Filippochkin established the Russian Cultural Centre Trust which has continued ever since to provide educational

and social programmes for Russian and Slavonic people in the city. After the September 4, 2010, earthquake she set up additional programmes to help Russian people who had been affected and traumatised by the quake. The award of the medal recognizes all of these efforts. But it has been difficult for Mrs Filippochkina. Her cultural centre was based in Christchurch Community House in the central city which has been demolished. “We lost all of our resources and all of the important things I collected over 12 years. Now we’re starting to bring the pieces together.” She has found bases at a Shirley kindergarten and at the Shirley Rugby Club. Living in a devastated street has also been trying. Kinsford Street has been hit hard by the February 22 quake and few people are still living there. “My husband and I are in the process of trying to buy a piece of land,” Mrs Filippochkina said. “I don’t know how long it will take us to rebuild. It’s not very nice to be here.”

Christmas cancer party AFTER his arrival Santa led the children into a large tent where he handed out presents after which the children enjoyed a range of entertainment which included a bouncy castle, merry-go-round and miniature horses. Before Santa’s arrival a performance was given by dramatic arts students from the Canterbury Polytechnic Institute of technology. Child Cancer Foundation funding manager Clare Wilkinson said the event was “the ultimate” children’s party. “The kids have had a tough year and this is something they’ve really looked forward to. “It has been an absolutely fantastic day. The parents said they had a really relaxing afternoon.”

the party was an important part of their yearly activities. “We see it as helping the kids,” he said. The Child Cancer Foundation offices were wrecked in the September 4, 2010, earthquake and have since been demolished. Moving to a new base at 52 Cashel St the foundation had to move out again after the February 22 quake. Returning to the premises they had to leave once more after the June 23 quake since the Organising team, from left: Christine Graham, building was threatened by others around it. FORMER Christchurch City councillor Denis O’Rourke is about to enter parliament as a list MP for New Zealand First after only 18 months with the party. Despite being 65, an age when many are considering retirement, Mr O’Rourke said that option held no appeal for him. “As far as I’m concerned I’m as active and healthy and as motivated as I was 20 years ago, so why would I want to retire?” Mr O’Rourke first entered politics in the early 1980s as campaign

manager for Ann Hercus, who became Labour’s minister of police and women’s affairs. In 1989 he was elected to the council where he served until 2004. He quit the Labour Party the year before his exit. “There was no great bust up or any particular issue, it was just a drifting apart.” Despite being off the council, he remained heavily involved in regional affairs through a variety of roles including chairing the Central Plains Water Trust,

working with several businesses including a commercial and industrial recycling company which he started, and as a director on the board of Christchurch International Airport. He also retired from legal practice during this period after several decades in the field. He was looking forward to “a very interesting life” in parliament and wasn’t concerned about being overshadowed by enigmatic party leader Winston Peters. “I don’t think he provides a shad-

THE warm sunny weather at the weekend drew large crowds to the central city to walk into the heart of the city’s red zone in Cathedral Square which has been closed to public access since February 22. This was the second weekend that the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) had opened the square to the public. Nearly 20,000 people took advantage of last weekend’s latest opportunity to view what has gone

and what remains of the buildings that have been nearly as familiar to us as our own homes. Having been into the red zone on a number of occasions since February 22, the transformation in Cashel Mall or as it is more accurately known City Mall, has been remarkable from the time I was there six or so weeks ago when it resembled a building site. On Saturday, large numbers of shoppers flowed

months ago when Clydesdales were clip clopping up and down the mall pulling an old tram to the delight of tourists and children. The place was alive, vibrant. I joined the rubberneckers of all ages, quite a number of them overseas tourists, to amble along the walkway from the mall down to the square. Much admired landmarks have gone, yes, but quite a number of grotty old buildings have been

cleared away also. Perhaps it’s my imagination but there seemed to be more air and light – less a feeling of being enclosed. Instead of lamenting what had been destroyed and lost I found myself thinking of possibilities of what could be. The earthquakes have brought disaster, horror, tragedy and challenges and yet, they have also presented the city with opportunities.

the earthquake, forcing him to abandon his workshop for six months. “It felt like a curse. I left Christchurch with my family a few times, but then I realised my inspiration was freezing up every time I left so I came back.” Two months ago, Mr Maka resumed his work by incorporating the physical and spiritual disturbances of the earthquake into his art. “My work is different now and I can see how the earthquake has affected my designs.” Mr Maka’s art is based on the traditional Tongan practice of smoking mats. He came up with the unique approach while researching art in Tonga. “When I was home, I noticed the pattern of burns and smoke marks that a mosquito coil had left on the walls and that

was the start of my creative development.” The Tongan materials needed to create smoke patterns were unavailable in New Zealand, so Mr Maka spent seven years experimenting with alternatives. “I use cabbage tree stems, macrocarpa leaves, pine needles, sugar cane, and walnuts to create the smoky patterns.” Mr Maka spends between two hours and one month layering smoke on each artwork. “I build the smoke up in layers to create different effects. After each layer of smoke, I apply a layer of varnish and continue the process until I get the level of darkness that I want.” Mr Maka hoped EQC would repair his studio or find alternative premises so he could continue focusing on his art.

Citizens Advice wants office replacement Chris Tobin

THE Citizens Advice Bureau is keen to have a presence in the eastern suburbs, but is battling with a more immediate problem – finding premises to replace those it has lost in Bishopdale. With the yellow stickering of the Bishopdale Library and community centre where Citizens Advice had an office, Bob Smith, the bureau’s business manager, said that a new base in the north-west of the city was urgently needed. “We need two rooms: an office area to service clients and a second room for privacy,” he said. Citizens Advice lost its main office when the Community house in Hereford was badly damaged in the February 22 earthquake. Computers and office records were lost in the destruction. A base has since been established in the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology and there is another branch in Hornby. Mr Smith said prior to its closure nearly three weeks ago the Bishopdale branch has been busy. “It has been much busier since the quake with quake-related problems – depression, EQC and tenancy issues,

lease agreements. There’s a whole range of concerns people have. “We’ve encountered depression before, but it has increased the Out of action: Bob Smith at Citizens Advice’s closed hopelessness some people are premises in Bishopdale. experiencing.” Mr Smith said 35 volunteers had been trained and were ready to assist in the Bishopdale area, but without premises, they could not work and it was frustrating. “It’s reached the stage where we’re providing more help than we have done in years and we’re just frustrated we’re unable to help clients on a faceto-face basis.” Citizens Advice has never had a branch in the eastern suburbs before and Mr Smith said they were keen to have a branch there if a suitable building could be found. Citizens Advice helps in a broad range of areas, which includes work and unemployment, education, budgeting, health and counselling, legal issues, and housing. If anyone can help Citizens Advice with premises in the Bishopdale/ Papanui area, they should ring 3494947.

Chinese Consulate General opens Gina McKenzie

MORE than 200 dignitaries gathered for the opening of the Chinese Consulate General last Friday in Upper Riccarton. Consul general Madame Tan Xiutian said the new consulate general would attract more Chinese tourists and English language students to Christchurch while making it easier for Cantabrians to visit China. “The South Island has been attracting more Chinese to work, study, and travel and this will have

a positive impact on the local economy. “Over 30,000 Chinese people live in the South Island and China is now New Zealand’s secondlargest trading partner.” Madame Tan paid tribute to the 23 Chinese victims of February’s earthquake and said that China will do all it can to assist with the rebuild of Christchurch. “With joint efforts, a more beautiful Christchurch with a better environment, robust economy, and more harmonious society will soon emerge.”

Green light for Brooklands events RED-ZONED Brooklands residents finally have something to smile about with the news that two popular summer events will go ahead as planned. The biennial Brooklands Gala will be held on Saturday, January 21 at the Brooklands’ domain while the annual raft race from Spencerville to Brooklands will take place on Sunday, February 26. Brooklands’ Residents Association chairperson Annette Buxton said the events would be extra special this year as it could be the last time they will be held. “It’s going to be very special for the community

and also for those people who stay at Spencerville holiday park and look forward to this as part of their summer holiday. “We usually have a few thousand people at the gala and the raft race has been running for over 50 years, so it’s part of the history of the area.” Ms Buxton said the gala would include a pet parade, market stalls, live entertainment, and a tug of war contest. The raft race usually attracts about 30 rafts and had sections for adults and children. Ms Buxton said the raft race would be followed by a barbecue at the Brooklands’ fire station.

Consent update Christchurch City Council is preparing for an increase in demand for building consents as a result of recent earthquakes. The Council expects to meet this demand and we’ll keep you updated about our progress in the area of issuing consents, checking completed work to ensure it meets all requirements of consent, and issuing a code of compliance certificates. If you’re thinking of doing building work, make sure you talk to the Council as early as possible as we can help you with advice on how best to complete your consent application and meet the building code. Rebuilding our damaged infrastructure Christchurch City Council this week adopted a plan which sets out how the city will roll-out the rebuild of our earthquake-damaged roads and underground services. The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Plan has been prepared over past months with input from the elected Council, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, New Zealand Transport Agency and the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says the plan will help the community understand how we will go about fixing all the infrastructure that was damaged in the earthquake. “This is a massive project that will affect the lives of all our residents over the next five years and involving our community in the rebuild will be key to the success of our work.” Council General Manager Capital Programme Kevin Locke says the plan has been developed to align with recovery strategies for the city being

developed by CERA. This is a complex piece of work and we need to consider a range of priorities and external influences. “We have put robust processes in place to ensure we are delivering the best outcome for the city. We have made good progress so far with the focus on emergency repairs and temporary solutions. The next step is planning for the longterm repair of damaged infrastructure”

Safety campaign for pool owners Christchurch City Council is about to start its annual pool safety campaign and is trying to manage the impact of the recent earthquakes on the city’s pool owners. Tasked with making pool owners aware of the dangers of inadequate fencing, the Council is also educating owners about the effects the earthquakes may have had on their pools, and the steps they can take to make them safe again. The campaign includes:

x Informing residents of their responsibility to make damaged pools safe and the consequences if they fail to do so.

x Continued inspections of pools by Council’s two Pool Inspectors to ensure they comply with safety standards, including fencing and filling and emptying of pools. x Taking action against owners of pools with inadequate safety measures. What the Council needs to know about pools following the earthquakes: x Is the pool still intact and operational? x Is the pool area barricaded or fenced off?

x Is the pool empty? Residents are also urged to advise the Council if: x Their pool is empty and will remain so. x Their pool has suffered extensive damage and is no longer usable. x They no longer have a pool. x They have a pool that is not registered with the Council. Visit www.ccc.govt.nz/poolfencing for more information.

x Has the pool or pool fencing suffered damage?

Council welcomes reports of water leaks Christchurch City Council is welcoming community reports of broken water pipes and leaks on roads as Christchurch and Lyttelton Harbour communities head into their third month of water restrictions. City Water and Waste Manager Mark Christison says “Our staff aren’t on the roads 24 hours a day, so it is very helpful to have the public

being proactive by ringing in observed leaks on roads and footpaths so we can attend to them as soon as possible,” he says. Mr Christison says the Council has completed 27,500 water repair jobs since the 22 February earthquake, and Leak Detection crews are continuing to work around the city to identify leaking water lines.

Code of compliance certificates issued for November

“We’ve also been receiving calls about members of the public who may not be following the restriction rules as well as they could be given the severity of the damage to the water supply network. The restrictions are serious so we need everyone to get on board. The community is doing a great job so far, but there are some people and businesses that need reminding.”

Santa shines up Christchurch Christmas carols rang out as the 2011 Santa Parade kicked off last Sunday. Despite fears that this year’s parade might not go ahead, and with floats having to negotiate traffic islands, the well-loved event went smoothly with a crowd estimated at 100,000 lining the route. Shorter than in previous years, the route along Riccarton Road was lined with spectators of all ages. Old favourites such as the Three Little Pigs, Alice in Wonderland and Mother Goose took their place alongside contemporary floats, Star Wars, Super Heroes and Cheerleaders. Representatives of Christchurch’s diverse ethnic communities showed off their colourful national costumes. The biggest cheer of the day was reserved for the old gent himself, Santa, supported by elves, angels and helpers. Mainland Press photographer Gilbert Wealleans captured some of the action.

Gifts Plan in Advance 1 2

WEDNESDA EDNESDAY Y DE DEC CEM EMB BER 7 2011

It’s easy to get carried away at Christmas.

With so many gi s to buy, par es to go to and holidays to enjoy, you can end up spending a lot more than you expected. So plan in advance to decide w what you really want to give, eat and do, so that you can enjoy the holidays w with less of a financial hangover.

Plan your presents t

Decide how presents aare going to work this yyear. There are lots of ways of taking the pressure off – like k only buying for one family member each, secret santa arrangements, or spending e caps on gi s forr each other. Even with children you can tell them gi s are ggoing to be smaller or fewer e this year (It’s up to you whether you use this as an opportunity p to teach them m about money, or explain that Santa is concerned about the h carbon footprint of h hauling around such big gi s.) Also have a think about o what sort of gi s you y want to give. There are plenty of alterna ves to buying y something expensive i that will never be used. Popular op ons are making something o – from jam, to sweets, to li le herb gardens; giving gi s of me – babysi ng, garden work, helping i to clear out a shed; and re-gi ing – perfect for surprise gguests. Even if you do ggo for a tradi onal present, buy early to avoid buying something t silly in a Christmas a Eve shopping panic.

3

Plan your menu Have you no ced that every me you go to the supermarket you come back with a lot more than you needed? Write a really good list before you go and do a big shop once. Then you can take advantage of your supermarket Christmas club or higher petrol discount offers. Not only will you avoid buying things you don’t need, you also won’t get that Christmas morning panic that you have forgo en something.

Bu B udget dge dg ett for or it EEvven n iiff yo you ar are pl p an ann niin ngg to put some of your Christmas shopping on your credit ccaard d, haavviingg a b bud ud dge get wi w lll keep the spending in control. As well as presents and fo food ood d, ad add in in any n cos osts t for o travelling, entertaining and special ac vi es. Don’t forg fo rget et you ou als lso h haavvee allll the h usual costs of rent, power and food. Have a look at wh what hat at th hee in ntteerres est rraate attee is is on o your credit card, now might be a good me to switch to a low to ower w wer eerr rrate. aatte If you spend less at Christmas, you’ll start the year in a much be er be b be e e e e posi on. Souvlakia (serves 4/5)

Instruc ons

Put the onion, garlic, and oil in a food processor and process un l well blended. Pulse in the cumin, coriander, paprika, and cinnamon, adding a good seasoning of salt. Alterna vely, grate the onion and mix with the ingredients. Cut the lamb into 1.5-2cm size pieces and place in a shallow dish. Pour the onion mixture over the lamb and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes or up to overnight. Heat the barbecue hot plate to high and brush liberally with oil. Drain any gathering liquid from the lamb. Pile the pieces onto the hot, hot plate. Toss so the lamb browns quickly on all sides, but remains pink and juicy on the inside. Stuff pieces into warmed pita pockets with le uce greens and top with cumin-spiked coleslaw. Yoghurt can be served on the side if wished.

Ingredients

500 grams boneless lean lamb 1 medium-sized onion, peeled and roughly chopped 3-4 teaspoons minced garlic 3 tablespoons oil 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon If refrigera ng overnight, ensure the lamb is well covered as the onion has a tendency to permeate its way into other, more delicate foods like dairy or fruit.

Keep kids safe in cars this Christmas

P

lunket is urging people to have their child car restraints checked before the busy Christmas holiday season. Plunket Na onal Child Safety advisor Sue Campbell says the tragic accident in South Auckland last month in which a two-week-old baby boy was cri cally injured when his car

seat became loose is a stark reminder of the importance of correct installa on. “For a car seat to perform correctly in an accident, it needs to be installed correctly. “The Christmas holiday period can be a busy and stressful me for parents and caregivers so now is a good me to check your child’s car seat before we get into the silly season, urges Ms Campbell. “We recommend that parents and

caregivers seek expert assistance from a child restraint technician for a free check to ensure that your child's car seat ďŹ ts your vehicle and is installed correctly. They can also advise about the best car seat for your child’s age and weight, and one that is best suited to your car. “Child restraint technicians are available through Plunket car seat rental schemes and at a number of other hire outlets or retailers. It is a totally free service.â€? While Plunket recognises that the cost of child restraints is beyond the means of some families, assistance is available. “Plunket has a Car Seat Rental Scheme, which exists to help families get access to child car restraints. Our priority is keeping children safe so we’re exible on payment methods, but hireage is generally less than the cost of a takeaway coee a week. Some families may also qualify for a special grant from Work and Income to buy or hire a child restraint,â€? she says. For informa on on a car seat rental scheme near you, visit www.plunket.org.nz.

Ensuring safety: Make sure to check that the child seats are installed correctly before travelling this season.

Love from Ula U

la loves Canterbury! Three of its four stores are located in the Canterbury region and this year more than ever, Cantabrians have really been showing that they love Ula back. “We love seeing familiar faces returning to the stores. It’s great when people walk in wearing one of our dresses or tees and it’s really fun to see our customers from Christchurch discovering us when they’re on holiday at Akaroa or Hanmer Springs,” says owner Rhythm Wishart. 'Party’ is the word this December, with rows of ‘wow’ Christmas party dresses. Ula also stands for clothes that can travel with you. The ‘Crush’ range for Ula is made in a very fla ering fabric that requires no ironing and is designed to be easy to care for. There’s the pre ly-shaped tanks and sun tops featuring charming prints and gorgeous slubby fabrics and quirky tees come in new hues from earth-shades, to clear sorbets and edible berry colours. Skirts are really featured this season, with silhoue es ranging from so lysculpted bias-cuts to the unique ‘so -top’ fi ng that is featured in many of Ula’s own-brand skirts. “It’s our own secret recipe for a comfortable fla ering fit for any figuretype,” says Rhythm. To complete the summer wardrobe, step out of those workday heels and slip into a sweet pair of Ula’s pre y print jandals. The men are not forgo en at Ula, with lots of hats, edgy but understated unique

tees, and an exclusive range of skinnyfit cargo pants and new colours in Ula’s popular standard fit. Christmas is all over the Ula stores too.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 7 2011

WHEN A CITY FALLS Local TV producer Gerard Smyth has been behind a camera for a long time, and on the evidence of this film it seems he hasn’t had a minute without one on his shoulder for the past year. His automatic response to waking up in his central Christchurch home on September 4, 2010, was to hit the streets and begin making a documentary. Initially he was imagining quite a different film, the story of a city blessed by some incredibly good luck. But this self-congratulatory aspect quickly evaporates and after February 22 Smyth’s camera becomes the witness to a lot of personal grief. His empathy with his subject however is always evident and saves the film from anything approaching voyeurism. There are moments that will be hard for Cantabrians to watch, but seeing these scenes on the big screen also gives us some distance from them and without any formal narration the film really is the people’s story. Where Smyth’s achievement lies is not only in immediate response, but also in looking forward to what is still ahead of us.

When a City Falls makes a powerful argument for a new kind of city, one built with truly human values, not just dictated by relations of power, privilege and economic convenience. In this his footage from other disaster-struck cities is especially powerful. If I have a criticism of the film it is that it lingers just a little too long in the earlier stages, but this is a minor complaint compared to what Smyth and his team have achieved. All film-making is about storytelling and documentaries occupy a special space in that they tell our stories. When a City Falls won’t be the last documentary on this subject and nor should it be, but Smyth must be congratulated for his achievement in making this film and telling our story amidst the challenges of the past year. I hope that people outside Christchurch see this film also, in order that they not underestimate the long struggle still ahead of us. A FIERY blend of unique music including tracks influenced by February’s earthquake will be played by violinist Fiona Pears at her Feeling CD release concert in West Melton on Sunday. Pears had just finished recording part of her fifth CD when the February 22 earthquake struck. Her husband Ian managed to hit the save button just in time to preserve the tracks. The songs that emerged from Pears’ earthquake experience included Calm Before the Storm and Theatre Royal Overture. “I wrote Theatre Royal Overture to open a big concert we did at this beautiful old theatre in February. Sadly our performance was to be the last one before the earthquake damaged the stunning venue.” Pears was also saddened by the loss of the Harbour Light theatre in Lyttelton. I have done every single local CD and DVD release at this theatre and I know it leaves a large gap in many musicians’ lives. “On the upside, music and the arts are very much alive and kicking here and I am sure that this will never change.” The concert will be held at the Nut Point Gallery and begins at 4pm. Tickets are $30 and $25 for students.

Scully scores double in cycling

Sprint finish: Invercargill cyclist Tom Scully celebrates as he wins the city criterium of the Armstrong Motor Group Festival of Cycling, which was held at the University of Canterbury on Sunday. Scully also won Saturday’s road race, which was held at Waipara, making him the first person to win both days in Christchurch’s annual celebration of cycling. In the women’s races Karen Fulton won Saturday’s Waipara Challenge while her Nelson club-mate Jeannie Kuhajek won the criterium. Christchurch riders dominated Saturday’s Frog Rock Mountain Bike ride section with Anton Cooper winning the men’s race and Kristy Abbott taking out the women’s. The races are usually held around the Sumner and bays area and city centre but shifted venues because of this year’s earthquakes. Photo: Bruce Wilson Photography.

Rock climbers’ conference ROCK climbing researchers from around the world converged at the University of Canterbury’s College of Education last week for the first International Rock Climbing Research Congress. Event organiser Dr Nick Draper said the event was a great opportunity for rock climbing researchers from around the world to get together, discuss their research and plan future collaborations. “Sampling some of Canterbury’s greatest outdoor adventure spots is a very attractive bonus,” he said. The congress featured expert keynote speakers presenting on subjects including acute injuries to the hand in rock climbers, rock climbing and environmental education, personality characteristics of alpine climbers and BASE jumpers and the accidents they have and the psycho-physiological demands of rock climbing. “The congress is the first of its kind in more than a decade and it is long overdue, Dr Draper said. “Research in the field of rock climbing has increased dramatically since the last similar event.”

BURNHAM’S Ross Smith has returned to winning form in style taking the two premier show jumping events at the South Canterbury North Otago Two Star show at Waimate last weekend. Riding the stunning imported eight-year-old stallion Quite Cassini, Smith held off a smart performance from the in-form Tegan Fitzsimon aboard Alacazam MH to win the Cathay Pacific Horse Grand Prix on Sunday. Just four started the Grand Prix with Fitzsimon, backing up from a convincing win in the Giltrap Audi Young Rider with the class’s only clear round on the previous day, and Smith the only combinations to go clear in the first round.
