All I want for Christmas.... Samantha Early

ALL Marta Treskonova wants this Christmas is a decision on her two white-zoned Sumner properties and relief from her mortgage and rates bills. Ms Treskonova had sold her Wakefield Avenue home and was packing to move into a new house she built on the sunny side of the valley, for which she had been saving for 23 years. The February 22 earthquake struck the week before settlement date of March 1, sending rocks slamming on to her property and turning her plans “to custard”. Ms Treskonova saw the cliffs crumbling towards her and fled – her sleep-out and garden were covered in 25 large boulders. The sale fell through and she was left with a large mortgage, after borrowing against the old house to build the new one. Both houses were given red stickers, deemed unsafe because of rock fall risk. A 30-metre long protective barrier three to four metres high, with a ditch at the back, was built at Wakefield Avenue in May. She is paying rates on the two properties and her bill is overdue for the first time in her life, despite the 40-percent concession given to red-stickered residents by the Christchurch City Council. Earlier this month she told councillors her story at their first special earthquake meeting, asking them to consider rates relief. Other red-stickered Sumner residents also asked for rates to be removed on their properties and councillors are due to decide on that at a meeting tomorrow. Ms Treskonova said she was told in February a decision on whether the land had to be abandoned was Still waiting: Marta Treskonova at her property this week. “No definitely not. What people do behind closed doors is their business, but I don’t want to see it on the streets.”

“Whether or not it is legal, the same problems will still be there.”

“Yes. It is the oldest profession in the world and moving it off the streets is not going to change a thing. Keeping it legal keeps organised crime out.”

“Yes if it is within designated areas where it will not interfere with residential areas.”

“I’ve really no problem with it being legal but they should be aware of other people’s concerns. The council could maybe designate an area for them.”

“I think it is fine as long as the Christchurch City Council monitors and polices the situation and gives them a specified area where they won’t disturb residents.”

more money she would lose. “If not for the earthquake I would be comfortable in my new house, mortgage free having a modest lifestyle and I would be fine by my age.” Ms Treskonova is now renting another place in Sumner for $420 a week but insurance payouts are due to finish in February and if she can’t get a decision on zoning soon she’ll have to move to a cheaper place, probably the temporary village set

up for quake-displaced residents in Linwood Park. Her work as a freelance ecologist was also harder to come by since the quakes so she wasn’t planning much for Christmas this year. She was just glad to still be living in her beloved Sumner. She said her bank, Westpac, was helpful but the only real solution was to speed up the zoning so she could get Earthquake Commission and insurance payments.

MS Treskonova wants to make contact with a woman who she comforted shortly after the February 22 quake. She said the young, slim woman was walking on a track behind her property carrying plastic shopping bags, and came falling down with the cliffs. “How she survived that I have no idea.” She said she often wondered how the woman was coping and would like to be in touch with her. The Dux returns...in Addington Toys galore for kids

I’m back: Dux de Lux owner Richard Sinke was thrilled with the turnout at his new venue, Dux Live in Addington when it opened on Monday night. The music bar was set up after tenants at the Arts Centre, which included the former Dux site at the old student union building, were evicted following the damaging February 22 earthquake. Mr Sinke said it was a nerve-wracking few hours until opening because they were only given final sign-off from the Christchurch City Council at 3.30 Monday afternoon. A large crowd turned out to hear Christchurch band The Transistors followed by Japanese rock band Guitar Wolf. A private function tonight will serve as the official opening, with the venue open to the public from 10pm. Photo: Samantha Early

Council shoots for World Cup games Tom Doudney

DAMAGED sporting facilities are not expected to stand in the way of Christchurch’s bid to host games for the lucrative Under 20 Football World Cup in 2015. Christchurch City Council has let tournament owner Fifa and organiser New Zealand Football know of its interest in holding games which would be expected to bring thousands of international and domestic visitors into the city. Council recreation and sports manager John Filsell said that if AMI Stadium wasn’t available by that time, games could be hosted at Rugby League Park, which would have a maximum capacity of up to 25,000. Eight possible training grounds had been identified around the city and work on bringing them up to standard would be completed within the next few years. “We are confident that by 2015 the city’s capacity to host visitors will really support the event and enhance it and we are also confident that any other facilities needed such as the CBS Arena will be fine and operating. Mr Filsell said it would not be until “well into next year before they knew the outcome of their bid.

Late night shopping in Sumner SUMNER businesses will be open for late night shopping on Thursdays and Fridays leading up to Christmas in an effort to boost earnings in the quake hit community. Sumner Business Group facilitator Emma Smith said that the seaside suburb had been quiet in recent months because of a perception that it was dangerous or scary with rock falls in the area. “It is slightly better now than it was maybe a month ago because the weather is better and maybe people are getting a bit braver but its not as good as it normally is. Participating shops will be open until 8pm.

Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter said it was a big tournament in world terms with about 9000 international visitors and a huge global television audience associated with it. “It’s probably worth 100,000 visitor nights for the country and so it’s our chance to get a share of that. The large international media contingent would provide an opportunity to showcase Christchurch. Mainland Football chief executive Mike Coggan said having “the next crop of superstars playing here would be “huge for the game locally. “I imagine in our lifetime there won’t be a bigger event to come to New Zealand from a football point of view.

Collecting toys: Toy Run volunteers Alyssa Wright, left and Nathan Hughes load donated toys collected from the Mainland Press offices into a van as part of the ‘Six Fellas second annual Christchurch Hospital Toy Run’. More than 1000 toys were collected over the course of the event. On Saturday the group raised $600 for Ronald McDonald House

in gold coin donations from a “Show and Shine event featuring about 200 classic cars at the CBS Arena, after which the whole convoy went to the children’s ward at Christchurch Hospital and delivered toys to the patients. Collected toys are still being delivered this week to charities like the City Mission and Salvation Army. Photo: Samantha Early

From the editor Has love triumphed? THE scene was North Hagley Park on April 18, and the Anglican Bishop of Christchurch Victoria Matthews was speaking to a crowd of 40,000 united in grief at the national memorial service for the February 22 earthquake. The crowd included Prince William and the prime ministers of New Zealand and Australia, John Key and Julia Gillard and other dignitaries. “What of the story after the tragedy?” Bishop Matthews asked. “What story will you tell? I hope it will be a story of people and community (and that) out of the ashes and rubble…

love triumphed.” Eight months later and ironically in the season of Advent, the season of good will as Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of their Saviour, the Anglican church has found itself embroiled in a scrap over the future of ChristChurch cathedral, first with the Christchurch City Council and then within its own ranks. Bishop Matthews is seen as favouring demolition of the cathedral and building afresh possibly elsewhere with full restoration off the cards although

Chris Tobin editor@mainlandpress.co.nz

she has been reported stating she was waiting for engineering reports before making a final decision. The dean of the cathedral for nine years Dean Peter Beck who played a major role in the national memorial service, favours repairing and restoring the cathedral. He has since resigned and is seeking a seat on the Christchurch City Council for the Burwood-Pegasus ward. Earlier this week Bishop Matthews denied there had been a major falling out between her and the

dean but there is an obvious variance of opinion between the two and the dean has said there were differences between them. Explaining his move into the secular world, he said he wanted to serve Burwood-Pegasus and all of Christchurch and get things moving for the people in the eastern suburbs. However, his departure to the world of politics and the acrimony over the cathedral will disappoint many in his church and also members of the public who have seen him as a spiritual leader. Out of the ashes and rubble has love triumphed?

Letters to the editor Comment on column IN her column (Mainland Press, December 2) Jo Kane’s political bitterness is clumsily exposed in her attacks on a consecutive and overwhelming National victory. By attacking ‘deals’, she has clearly ignored Helen Clark’s actions by withdrawing candidates in the West Auckland and Sydenham electorates, after securing the pledge of confidence and supply from Laila Harre and James Anderton. In the two electorates which she specifically mentions, Ohariu and Epsom, National last month stood candidates. To attribute the demolition of the Labour Party to talkback radio is really pathetic, and an asinine excuse. She bluntly refers to two politicians by their surnames, Banks and Dunne. She then proceeds to offer genuflection to two Labour candidates by using first names - at the same time ignoring the other two ladies in those electorates who also served their communities well.

That attitude exposes all. I suggest she contemplates changing to the concert programme instead of the talkback which has antagonised her attitude so much. Can I presume the sacking of that ECan outfit has no influence on her article? Bob Oliver, Harewood

Liquor licence I FIND it appalling that opposition from the police has meant a delay in the Ilam New World being able to get a liquor licence (Mainland Press, November 30). Opposing outlets by schools or late night suburban venues – fine! But this approach is almost criminal in itself. In judicial terms this is akin to the recent case where one supermarket chain objected to another’s proposed new site on frivolous objections holding it up for several years. Thankfully in our fair society,

economic objections are now outlawed under the Resource Management Act. Sergeant Lawn’s team (concerned at supermarkets discounting alcohol) stated policy: “The police were opposing new licences and licence renewals,” could be almost considered ‘ultravires’ and is certainly highly questionable. This is more properly the realm of politicians and local body councillors. The police should be 100 percent enforcing existing laws which are quite powerful. If they are inadequate keep researching and pass further sensible ones. But if they are concerned on price, that is the role of government only. It is very simple – just put up the price as high as you want through much greater alcohol taxes. Then you get a fair trade solution and have a boost to our balance of payments situation as well. Students’ association to act as ‘watchdog’ Chris Tobin

ACTING as a watchdog and ensuring the integrity of a University of Canterbury degree will not be compromised is the challenge facing the University of Canterbury Students’ Association in the coming years according to Kohan McNab. Mr McNab, 24, is stepping down as president of the association after a year in the position and he said with cutbacks and shrinkage of courses and staff being inevitable the association had to be vigilant. “The funding model depends on the number of students and we want to make sure cuts are done in a way that will not threaten academic integrity.” Predictions are student numbers will drop markedly in the next few years. After the February 22 earthquake, the university lost 1500 full-time students from the usual number of over 15,000. However, in the long-term Mr McNab thought the outcomes for the university would not necessarily be negative. “I think the result will be that the university will be far more aware of its strengths and weaknesses and there’s a strong chance it will be distinct from any other in the country and with benefits for students.” At the beginning of the year Mr McNab, a double graduate in law and commerce, worked closely with Sam Johnson founder of the Student Volunteer Army which assisted in the earthquake clean-up and recovery across the city. Both grew up in Mayfield, Mid-Canterbury, and attended the same primary school. “After the September quake Sam and his team did fantastic work. I was on a shovel and thought it was fantastic that students could be positive. “We wanted to carry that on and in February we planned a beach cleanup. The team was together and

New bus services for eastern suburbs A NEW minibus service for eastern suburbs residents who have been without bus services since February’s earthquake was launched on Monday. Road and bridge damage had severely restricted full-sized bus access to these areas since February 22. The 511 Avonside and Dallington

Link and the 512 Avondale and Aranui Link provide four services a day each, Monday to Saturday, linking the Palms and Eastgate shopping centres. The 10-seater minibus provides access to shopping and community facilities for residents, mostly outside the peak commuting periods.

that’s why they could go into action so quickly when the quake hit (on February 22).” The work of the army helped improve the image of students in the city which in recent years has been tarnished by alcohol-fuelled problems in the streets near the campus and in neighbouring bars. “A small minority can affect the image of students but we’ve always been working to counter that,” Mr McNab said. Relations with residents around the campus had improved, he believed, and after being opposed to liquor bans being imposed in the streets around the university, Mr McNab said the students’ association was now supportive. “Things are progressing and this year there were fewer complaints

regarding student parties.” Ever since the February 22 earthquake the students’ association has run its operation from offices under the central library after the Student Union building was damaged. The building’s future is still uncertain. “We’ve got no figure on the damage but it will be a considerable sum. All possibilities are still on the table,’ Mr McNab said. The students’ association owns 65 percent of the building, the university the remainder. Next year Mr McNab intends to travel and he hopes to find employment in international management. The new president of the students’ association is Erin Jackson who will take up the position next month.

UC to hold graduation ceremonies MORE than 1400 students are graduating from the University of Canterbury this week in three ceremonies which will be held in the CBS Canterbury Arena in Addington. The ceremonies will be held today and Friday with 1468 graduands receiving their degrees, diplomas and certificates in person. A further 400 will graduate in absentia.

A total of 94 students from the College of Education graduated in a ceremony held in Rotorua on December 8. Also mathematician Prof Douglas Bridges will receive the UC Research Medal. The university will also award Adrienne, Lady Stewart, an honorary Doctor of Letters degree and former Minister of Finance Ruth Richardson an honorary Doctor of Commerce degree today.

Adams picks up three cabinet portfolios Tom Doudney

SELWYN MP Amy Adams says she is looking forward to the challenge of being Canterbury’s newest cabinet minister. Ms Adams was awarded the internal affairs, communications and information and technology portfolios, and also became associate Minister of Earthquake Recovery in Prime Minister John Key’s cabinet announced on Monday. She said she was very excited to have been given three “quite significant” portfolios and there would be a lot of work to do. “I really think there are a lot of good people in our caucus, any number of them could have moved up,” she said. “I’m very pleased [the Prime

Amy Adams

Minister] has recognised the work that I’ve put in over the three years and it’s quite humbling.” In the process of winning the Selwyn electorate, Ms Adams increased her majority by 6633 votes over the 2008 result which saw her into parliament for the first time. This time she won almost 20,000

more votes than her nearest rival. “It’s always nice to get that vote of confidence from your electorate,” she said. “I’m not sure how much of a factor that was in the decision but as an electorate MP it’s very rewarding personally.” In other appointments, Ilam MP and Minister for Earthquake Recovery Gerry Brownlee picked up the transport portfolio and returned to the role of leader of the house which he had stepped down from to focus on Christchurch’s earthquakes. Labour’s Brendon Burns will be leaving parliament after losing the Christchurch Central seat to National’s Nikki Wagner by 45 votes after special votes were counted.

Broadcasting from Middleton THE country’s first 100-percent digital radio station has been set up in Christchurch with The Radio Network team moving into new headquarters in Middleton. The move on Monday marks an end to almost 10 months of broadcasting out of motel rooms at Riccarton Motor Lodge for the on-air teams at Newstalk ZB and Classic Hits.

Lionel donating his blood for 50 years

LEEANN MARRIOTT

LICENSED SALES CONSULTANT REAA 2008

EXPERTISE | RESULTS | PROFESSIONALISM

Long-time donor: Veteran blood donor Lionel Hussey has made more than 200 donations.

First timer: Corina Healy was excited about giving blood for the first time.

Christine de Felice

SEVENTY-one-year-old Lionel Hussey was one of more than 100 Christchurch people who donated blood during the New Zealand Blood Service’s special blood drive last Thursday. Mr Hussey has been donating blood for more than 50 years, since making his first donation on his 19th birthday in Perth. “I was in the navy, on the HMRNZS Royalist, and we were getting ready to go to the Far East. A group of us were asked if we wanted to donate blood. We weren’t doing anything else so we did.” That was the first of more than 200 blood donations Mr Hussey has made over the years. He became a regular donor following the death of his father of an aneurism in 1996. “He had been given 20 units of blood and I thought, ‘I’m going to replace that’.” As well as blood Mr Hussey also donates plasma. Donors can only give blood once every three months, so Mr Hussey donates plasma on the two intervening months. His blood type is A positive, which is the best for the extraction of plasma, he said. Although he turns 72 next March he is still fit and healthy enough to be a blood donor. He attributes this to his diet and lifestyle. He eats five pieces of fruit and plenty of raw vegetables every day, doesn’t smoke and rarely drinks alcohol. He is also a regular at the gym. The NZ Blood Service was running its special blood drive at the Dome in North Hagley Park because its main venue at the Millennium hotel was no longer available following the February 22 earthquake, marketing and communications manager for the New Zealand Blood Service, Paul Hayes, said. “We were actually running a mobile blood drive there on the day of the February earthquake. A few of the donors who came in on Thursday have not donated since that day so it was good to be able to give them the opportunity,” Mr Hayes said. “Also, since the September earthquake, we can no

longer hold blood drives at the Salvation Army Citadel or Westpac in High Street.” Several first-time donors gave blood on Thursday, including Corina Healy, 26. “I had always wanted to be a donor but haven’t been able to do so before. I was excited about doing it today,” she said. Ms Healy, who is a St John volunteer, also plans to register as a bone marrow donor. Mr Hayes said the blood drive was very successful with 77 units of blood collected.

Sick children to benefit from fundraiser CHILDREN needing to spend time in the children’s ward at Christchurch Hospital over the coming year will benefit from the efforts of thousands of fundraisers around the country. The hospital was one of 10 New Zealand hospitals to receive funding for its children’s ward from money raised in the annual Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal. General manager operations for Countdown, Brett Ashley last Wednesday presented a cheque for $64,485 to the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB)’s child health division. Mr Ashley said it had been a fantastic effort by the company’s team and members of the public. This year Countdown chose CDHB as the recipient of its annual Paul Newman Foundation grant which, this year, totals $US25,000. The 2011 Countdown Kids’ Hospital Appeal was launched in Christchurch in August. CDHB child health services manager, Anne Morgan, said the money would be used to fund a part-time art therapist, who would work with earthquake-stressed children.

NEXT STEPS FOR IAG CUSTOMERS IN THE FLAT RESIDENTIAL GREEN ZONE AREAS Government confirms if you are in technical category 1 (grey), 2 (yellow) or 3 (blue)

If you have no foundation damage, the technical categories have no effect on your repairs. If you have foundation damage the following steps will apply

Some minor additional foundation works may be required, e.g. providing more reinforcing in the foundation.

IF TC2 The Department of Building and Housing has set clear guidelines for foundation repair or rebuild.

IF TC3 Site-specific engineering solutions will be required, and a geo-tech engineer will be engaged to report on the ground conditions at the site. Based on this report, and the type and style of your home, a structural engineer will design suitable foundations.

If the damage to your home is under $100,000 + GST from each event, EQC will pay for, and manage, your repairs including those to your foundations.

If the damage to your home is over EQC’s agreed cap for your house, the following will apply.

EQC is currently assessing land damage.

EQC deems land uneconomic to remediate and settles with you on your land.

You retain ownership of the land, but cannot rebuild on site.

IAG will assess your home and discuss settlement options with you.

EQC deems land economic to remediate and completes remediation if necessary.

IAG will work with you to assess and repair or rebuild your home. We are currently in the process of assessing all uninhabitable homes. Once we understand the implications of any necessary land remediation, we will organise geotechnical assessments where and when required. A scope of works will be created for the repair or rebuild of your home, if additional foundation work is required the associated cost will be included in the scope of work. Where possible, we will begin repairing and rebuilding. IAG1412MP

IF TC1

The Government recently announced three new categories for residential foundation designs for flat residential green zone land. The three categories, defined as TC1, TC2 and TC3 or grey, yellow and blue, are based on how the land is likely to behave during a major earthquake. They specify the different types of foundation work required when repairing or rebuilding homes. To check the technical category of your home visit www.landcheck.org.nz.

Linwood College has launched an ambitious rugby programme with the aim of fielding a Press Cup team in 2015/6. This year under real duress from the effects of the Canterbury earthquakes the school launched a team of Under 14 and Under 15 players, straight into Canterbury’s tough Division 1 U15 competition and the team was competitive. Five of this years’ team were selected to represent Canterbury in age group rep teams. With strong support from the Linwood Rugby and the Canterbury RFU, the Linwood College rugby program gives young men and women from the Eastern Suburbs, not just pupils, the chance to play serious organised sport. IT has been a difficult year for Burwood School but students are discovering hope for the future in the form of a new vegetable garden. The site of the former school swimming pool has been transformed over the past 15 months into a lush vegetable garden complete with planter boxes and award-winning scarecrows. Teacher aide Jacquie Ching said students were taking great pride in the garden and connecting with nature on a meaningful level. “It’s been really hard for us this year but the garden has given the students a positive focus with the chance to see things growing again. “The garden has taken off and now that the school has been zoned

green we’re feeling much better about next year.” Mrs Ching said the garden had become an important learning tool for the students who were using the green space for other learning areas such as mathematics. “We’ve had students out there measuring beans and doing other projects. It makes learning come alive for them.” Mrs Ching said the school was grateful for receiving support from various community organisations and local companies to set up the garden. “The garden will continue to grow and provide the students with a great learning experience. “Next year we will set up a worm farm and grow a wider variety of vegetables in the garden.”

Vet calendar a huge success

Your Council can offer advice on your building project

Third-year veterinary students Jenetta Forsyth, left, Victoria Melville, Ingrid Wilson, Rosie Keen, Jessica Boden and Kathryn Lewis raised $3000 for SPCA Canterbury with their 2011 ‘Barely There’ calendar. The Massey University students bared all earlier this year to raise funds for the organisation, their chosen charity, and their half-way celebration. Originally the students had been hoping to raise $2500, but were delighted to be able to hand over $500 more than

predicted to SPCA Canterbury on Saturday. Funds were not only raised through general sales at the university but also through independent auctions which are believed to have included signed copies by Prime Minister, John Key and members of the All Blacks. The New Zealand Veterinary Association was a major sponsor of the calendar as part of its commitment to support, mentor and develop future veterinarians.

Mr Tindall, who is the group spokesperson for Sustainable Canterbury, was concerned about environmental issues, emergency planning and recovery. “On top of rehousing, training and employment needs, there is urgent work to be done around emergency planning as well as recovery.” “An inclusive, environmentally sustainable economic future - for all

How to super-charge your breakfast

W

hat is the most important meal of the day for you? Nutri onists believe that there is great logic in the old saying, “Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dine like a pauper,” because the best way to kick-start your body in the morning is to give it the right fuel. The word ‘breakfast’ literally means to 'break the fast' from the eight or 12 hours since your last meal the night before. By morning, your brain and muscles are crying out for starter fuel to spring them into ac on and face the day ahead.

Why is breakfast so important? Ea ng breakfast has been iden fied as one of seven healthy habits that promote long life and good health. Three keys reasons not to skip breakfast are:

1. It boosts your nutrient intake Studies in the USA and UK da ng back as early as the 1960s have consistently shown that breakfast eaters have be er overall diets. Breakfast eaters have been shown to have a lower fat intake and a higher fibre intake plus significantly higher intakes of almost all vitamins and minerals, especially calcium, iron, and magnesium.

over-eat later in the day and it's usually something that’s quick to buy or a non-nutri ous, high-fat fast food.

Breakfast nutri on Unless you have a physically demanding job or play a lot of sports, a light cereal-and-toast style of breakfast is perfectly adequate and will meet all your nutri onal needs. Comparisons with other breakfast foods like egg and bacon, scrambled eggs, croissants, cheese on toast, and banana smoothies show that cereal-based breakfasts are nutri onally superior, being lower in fat, cholesterol, and kilojoules and higher in fibre and essen al nutrients. By Laura Lynskey www.healthyfood.co.nz. Reproduced with permission from Healthy Food Guide magazine.

Avoiding fats: It is best to eat healthy foods such as cereal and fruits and avoid fat-rich foods.

The perfect venue for festive functions...

2. It improves memory and concentra on Nutri on researchers have found that people who eat a balanced breakfast can concentrate be er and are more efficient at their work than those who skip it. For kids, there’s no doubt that breakfast is a must. Studies show that children who miss breakfast are less alert during the late morning hours and find it hard to concentrate on tasks that require prolonged mental effort. Factory workers who skip breakfast have been found to be more prone to accidents and have a lower produc on output compared to those who have something to eat in the morning.

Morning fuel: Cereal beats croissants as a start to the day.

3. It helps prevent binge ea ng Contrary to the belief of those who skip breakfast in the hope of losing weight, breakfast is a good friend. Skipping it means we are more likely to

Keep looking your best this summer

S

ummer is here, so a change is in order for your skin if you want it to look fabulous when the temperature rises. Switch to a lighter moisturiser during summer to keep your pores clear and help avoid blemishes. Remember your body needs more water in summer because you sweat more. To help restore your body fluids, keep a bo le of water handy and take it wherever you go. For a healthy tan, fake it. You can s ll get a healthy looking tan without skin damage if you use a sunless tanning lo on. Protect your skin against the sun’s dangerous UV rays by wearing sunscreen with a high SPF on all exposed areas of your body. Sun can be extremely damaging to your lips, neck, and the backs of your hands, so don't forget to protect them and help fight the signs of ageing. Don’t forget your feet! Exfoliate to get rid of dry skin and calluses. Moisturise them thoroughly and whenever you can and give your feet a pedicure to keep them in perfect condi on and looking good when wearing sandals. Exercise in the morning when the temperature is cooler or workout indoors in a controlled temperature. It’s a great way to start the day!

Feeling and letting go Isn’t it interes ng how emo ons pop up unexpectedly? Someone pushes our bu ons and suddenly, the feeling is there. Where do these emo ons come from? Emo ons from the past are stored in our body and a word, a tone or voice, a smell, a sight, a sound, or a thought can trigger them. We are so used to thinking that the emo ons, mind, and body are separate, but they aren’t. We make such a story about how we feel and blame the circumstances or someone else. How about just feeling and le ng go? There does not have to be a reason or a story. You will feel so much freer. anne e@emo onaltherapy.co.nz

Water therapy: Don’t forget to keep hydrating yourself especially if you’re frequently out in the sun!

Court Theatre back in action Kaikoura Roots Festival returns FOUR hundred invited guests celebrated the official opening of The Court Theatre at a black tie event last Wednesday. After February’s earthquake, the theatre was unable to operate from The Arts Centre and a new venue was located in Addington in the middle of the year. Court chief executive, Philip Aldridge, acknowledged the wide support, from both around New Zealand and overseas, as playing a key role in the sixteen-week build. The public opening of the theatre last Saturday was a sell-out performance of the new Roger Hall play, A Shortcut to Happiness. Tickets are available for the season, which runs until Culture returns: Court Theatre board of trustees early February, from www. chair Felicity Price speaks at the opening of the courttheatre.org.nz Court Theatre.

Gala on at Spencer Park Samantha Early

THE annual Spencer Park gala is still on, promising to bring a fun start to the New Year. The event has been a feature of summer holidays in the area for the past four decades. Spencerville resident and gala organiser Arthur Adcock has been running the event on a voluntary basis for the past 30 years. He originally got involved when he was a park ranger at Spencer Park. Mr Adcock said this year’s gala, sponsored by the Buy, Sell and Exchange, would feature about 60 market stalls selling everything from jewellery and second hand gear to home baking and jams. A food court will be made up of nine caravans, including a hangi which is a first for the 2012 event. There will also be a wide variety of family entertainment including rides, inflatable slides and side shows along with country music, rock ‘n’ roll and Irish dancing. Mr Adcock said the whole event was run by volunteers and there was still space for local clubs and non-profit groups to come to fundraise and promote their activities. “It’s family focused, all the entertainment and rides are family focused and the prices are kept low,” he said. The Spencer Park Gala and Market Day will be held at the Spencer Park picnic grounds, next to the camping grounds, on January 1 and 2 between 10am and 4pm. More information can be found in the Buy Sell and Exchange.

In brief Christmas on the green SYDENHAM will host a Christmas street party tomorrow evening at Buchan Park. The event, held at Anytime Fitness Cashmere, will run from 2pm to 4pm and feature a circuit session for all ages. ‘Captain Running Man’ will be there to flex his muscles and make sure everyone gets involved. A sausage sizzle and refreshments will be provided and all children will receive a participation certificate and balloon.

Lola’s Secret

27

by Monica McInerney

At the Valley View Motel in South Australia’s picturesque Clare Valley, eighty-four year old Lola Quinlan is up to her usual mischief. She’s sent her family away for Christmas and invited a number of mystery guests to come and stay. But who are all these people, and why aren’t they spending the festive season with their own loved ones? As the big day draws closer and Lola’s personal family dramas threaten to unravel her plans, she discovers that at a special time of year, magic can happen in every family – especially your own. From the bestselling author of At Home with the Templetons comes a funny, sad and moving novel about memories and moments and the very meaning of life.

Kris Jenner…and All Things gs Kardashian by Kris Jenner

On the day: Former Christchurch Central MP Brendon Burns, Savannah Pedofsky, CRFU chief executive Hamish Riach, Wesley Maufu, Former All Black Tane Norton, NZ Tax Refunds chief executive Cilla Hegarty, Nathan Daniels, Sound Advice managing director Tony Franklin, and Linwood College principal Margaret Paiti with sponsors’ cheques at the school last week.

LINWOOD College has launched an ambitious rugby programme with the aim of fielding a Press Cup team in 2015/6. An official launch at the school lost Thursday was attended by former All Blacks captain and Linwood rugby stalwart Tane Norton, and several Canterbury Rugby Football Union officials. This year the school entered a team of under-14 and under-15 players, for the first time in nearly 20 years, straight into Canterbury’s tough Division 1 under-15 competition. This was despite the school being closed for five

Marshall book-signing draws fans

Meeting their hero: Kiwis’ rugby league star Benji Marshall, made some fans’ day at a book signing for his new biography, Benji: My Story, at The Warehouse Papanui last Thursday. Avonhead residents Noah Dunnage, left, and Levi DaisNevin, right, both seven, were in luck. Noah had his rugby ball signed while Levi had his top signed.

weeks after the February 22 earthquake and then transferred to Cashmere High School, 10km away, for five months. Linwood College Rugby Football Club captain Paul Sapsford said the team had been dedicated despite many players coping with difficult circumstances because of the quakes. “The results were outstanding particularly when you consider that many of the players were younger than their opponents, most had not even played rugby and Linwood College was out of action after the earthquake.” Next year the club hopes to enter three boys’ teams and one girls’ team. The newly set up Linwood College Rugby Football Club is seeking to raise $80,000 to fund the five-year programme. Linwood College principal, Margaret Paiti said the team’s story was a “brightly positive” one. “We are absolutely thrilled about the prospect of developing a strong and comprehensive rugby programme for our students and community.” CRFU chief executive Hamish Riach said the initiative would help grow and develop talent from within the school and achieve the union’s objective of having a strong rugby presence in the eastern suburbs.

The Kardashians are famous for letting it all hang out. Whether they’re moving cross-country, settling a family feud, dealing with heartbreak, or just having fun with one another, their lives are utterly relatable. But what have Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, and the rest of the Kardashian clan got that we haven’t got? Off-the-charts beauty, millions of dollars, and Kris Jenner – the superstar mom and manager who made them into the family we can’t resist. Kris Jenner opens up about her relationships, her captivating kids, and her intimate connection to O.J Simpson and the trial of the century in a gripping personal story full of laughter, sadness, difficult choices, and her inspirational journey to build one of the most successful celebrity empires of our time. If you think your life is chaotic, try keeping up with Kris Jenner.
