Christmas house for CTV families Samantha Early

A FOUR-bedroom house in the suburb of Redwood has been transformed into a Christmas wonderland in an effort to help the families of CTV staff killed in the February earthquake. Brad and Janice Maxwell will open their home to the public on Sunday evening, with the entry price of a gold coin donation going to the CTV Families Trust. Mr Maxwell said this was about the sixth year they had run the house to raise money for charities and this year he wanted to do something for CTV. He was a regular advertiser on the station for his business, Premier Realty, over the past decade. “Knowing all those we lost in the building

collapse including a cousin of ours we just felt that this year it would be more appropriate to do it for the family trust of the CTV victims.” He said decorating the house started off like any other family, with a tree and a few decorations, but it has grown over the years and now they have three trailer-loads full, including 17 Christmas trees and 50,000 lights. “My wife got the bug; we’ve been told that our house is very different to a lot of the Christmas houses in that each room is decorated to a certain theme.” Mr Maxwell said previously they had opened the house for two nights before Christmas and had up to 1800 people through but this year they would

open for a week and expected 5000 visitors. CTV Families Trust spokesman Peter Brown said what the Maxwells were doing was wonderful and it showed the station’s culture. “Even a lot of the regular advertisers felt as thought they were part of the wider family of CTV and I think it’s a very positive thing.” Mr Brown said they were in the process of formalising the trust, which would work to support the families of the 16 staff members lost. The CTV Earthquake Families Trust Charity Christmas House at 4 Willowview Drive in Redwood will be open from 7pm until late from Sunday December 18 until Christmas Eve. Entry is by a gold coin donation per person. a

“I really enjoy it after the stress. It’s good to be with the family on Christmas day.”

“It is too stressful and it has lost its real meaning. When the actual day comes it is not too bad.”

“Everyone is forced to make a big deal of it. It should be about spending time together, not the eating and presents.”

“Since the earthquake I am just not prepared for it. It has come around pretty quickly.”

“I do enjoy it but the cost of it is what gets on my nerves. It is good for families though. The price of carrots is shocking!”

“I definitely enjoy Christmas. It is good to see people stepping out and being a bit silly”.

Council approves rates relief not pay rates from the date the Section 124 notice was issued or the date the property was vacated, whichever was earlier. It would apply until the notice was withdrawn or until June 30 next year, whichever came first. The decision was expected to cost the council about $450 million in lost rates. Councillor Tim Carter said it was likely the red stickered residents would never be able to access their properties because it was too dangerous so they had very different circumstances from other red zoned residents.

RESIDENTS whose properties have been given a red placard because of rock fall risk have had an early Christmas present from the Christchurch City Council. The council yesterday unanimously voted to remove rates from properties from which residents had been ordered to leave under Section 124 of the Building Act, because they were at risk of rock fall, cliff collapse, unsafe access or retaining wall issues. The qualifying property owners were already paying a reduced rates bill of 60 percent but would now be eligible to

Noise restrictions will kill The Strip, say bar owners Tom Doudney

OXFORD Tce bar owners say “draconian” new noise restrictions in the Christchurch City Council’s Central City Plan will kill off the popular night-time entertainment area. Under the plan, which was to be signed off by council at yesterday’s meeting, the area would be a category two precinct, meaning all noise emitted outside the building would not be allowed to exceed 50 decibels after 11pm. Hereford Holdings managing director Antony Gough, whose company owns all but one of the bars which make up the area of Oxford Tce popularly known as ‘The Strip’, said the “prohibitive” limits would put an end to outdoor dining and drinking after 11pm, effectively shutting the place down after that time. “That obviously is unworkable for us and I had to tell my bars yesterday and they were shocked and said ‘doesn’t anyone realise that means we won’t go back there’?” Mainland Press spoke to several bar owners, all of whom expressed anger and frustration over the new noise limits. Bangalore Polo Club owner Louis Vieceli

said the council was effectively taking the area “off the map” and he and other bar owners would have to take their business elsewhere if the limits were enforced. “You’re going to be limited in your hours. It’s going to make it very difficult to generate enough turnover, to generate the sales to be able to afford the overheads.” The Tap Room owner Steve Holmes said the decision was ludicrous considering the popularity of the area with tourists and the importance of tourists in bringing money into the city. “As a group we’ll be lobbying against it and council has got to have some more leniency in this area.” The council’s Central City Plan sponsor Mike Theelen was unavailable for comment. Mr Gough said his nephew, city councillor Jamie Gough, had told him it was unlikely the noise restrictions would be changed before the plan was signed off yesterday. He intended to talk to Cera and Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee about the matter.

Catching up with Santa

MAKE IT WORK!

MAINLAND Press photographer Gilbert Wealleans caught up with Santa in Westfield mall at Riccarton this week to ask the jolly old gent a few searching questions and find out how the Christmas season is going. Here’s what he found… Q: Can you tell me please, what sort of presents are children asking for this year? A: Mostly things like skate boards and scooters. Some are asking for Ipods and electronic games. Girls seem to still be going for the old favourites like Barbie dolls. Q: What is the age range of the people you see? A: Well, I have had folk of all ages ranging from tiny babies all the way through to old age pensioners. Some of the pensioners want to sit on my knee too! Q: What is the most unusual request you have received? A: Nothing really out of the ordinary, well not that you could publish anyway! Although, I did have one couple who wanted a photo of themselves with me to prove that they really were a couple for immigration purposes.

We all want to look good in the clothes we wear!

Q: On a more sensitive topic, do your Elves ever go on strike? A: No, never a strike. Sometimes they get a little unruly but most of the time they are excellent hard workers. Q: Do you ever get stalked or chased by the paparazzi? A: Oh, not really. You see, for the rest of the year I am in disguise, so they can’t find me. Q: Is the lack of chimneys in Christchurch a problem for you? A: It is a shame that there are not as many chimneys left now but I still have access to the houses via magic dust so getting the presents to the children is not a problem.

Thanks Santa. By the way, I still haven’t forgiven you for not giving me that bike when I was six. Santa: Busy as ever. ‘Well, you’d been bad, hadn’t you?’

Acknowledging our heroes

No surprises

BEING the end of the year it’s the time when people scratch their heads to decide on a New Zealander of the year. The country’s biggest daily newspaper, the NZ Herald, named Richie McCaw, skipper of the World Cup winning All Blacks as their choice. It’s another feather in the cap for Canterbury’s favourite son – one of many. If a poll was taken here in Christchurch the choice would probably be much the same. Would we have won the World Cup if McCaw wasn’t leading the way? I doubt it. The biggest NZer of the year event is one run by Kiwibank. This year scientist Sir Paul Callaghan headed home the pack in this competition. Recently they whittled the latest list of hopefuls down to a group of semi-finalists (Richie didn’t make it) which includes Sir Richard Taylor of Weta fame, economist Gareth Morgan and philanthropist and rugby league ambassador,

WHILE endeavouring to be politically impartial, there are a worrying number of unpopular planks in the ‘Mark 2 National administration manifesting as part of their mandate mantra. The notable party swing votes enjoyed by the Government (despite a record low turnout) make me wonder at the makeup of the swing to the right voters. Were these people vehemently opposed to asset sales, or involved in the massive protest against mining and oil exploration off the coastline, but succumbed to the John Key charm offensive? A few weeks ago I interviewed Russell Norman, co-leader of the successful Green Party, and I put it to him that surely the ‘sell it, mine it, drill it slogan was exactly what they stood for; this being the case I wondered why he apologised to the Prime Minister and bollocked the person who initiated it, (and sent him out to remove the stickers) Because, hello! On Monday following polling day approval was given to kick-start a huge open cast operation on the Denniston plateaux. An intriguing aspect of the party support the

Sir Peter Leitch. The semifinalists group has a same old faces look to it and will be reduced further next month when the finalists will be named. Gongs will be handed out in just over two weeks time also when the New Year’s honours list is announced. Because of more than a year of earthquakes, and the monster of February 22, Christchurch and Canterbury people are likely to figure prominently on this list. Great courage, selflessness and community spirit have been shown here by hundreds, perhaps thousands of ordinary Jo and Joanne citizens. The unfortunate thing is extraordinary work too often goes unrecognised, but let’s hope that besides those household names, some of our ‘unknowns,’ especially people who saved lives on February 22, are among those who are honoured.

Kaiapoi man among cadet graduates Second lieutenant Josh Sullivan of Kaiapoi was among 25 officers, left, who graduated from the Officer Cadet School last week, after 12 months of rigorous training. Family and friends of the graduating cadets, New Zealand Defence Force staff and overseas dignitaries attended the graduation ceremony at Waiouru Army camp. Chief of army, major general Tim Keating, land training doctrine group deputy commander colonel Paul King and land component commander brigadier Mark Wheeler, ONZM, were also present. At the graduation ceremony, the cadets, accompanied by the New Zealand Army Band, performed a series of parade drills. The ceremony was concluded with a haka. The graduates will commence training with their corps in January.

Jo Kane incumbents attracted was the location of much of it. Christchurch and environs for an example where long grinding months of help and effort by some sitting MPs went largely unrewarded with a couple of real community battlers losing their seats. It’s not a mirage the Nats have elicited support across the board, not just rural New Zealand, their policies winning favour within usually safe Labour seats ( if you look carefully at the party vote). It mystifies me how in such testing times both here and internationally, large number of citizens couldn’t be bothered getting off their butts to register to vote, let alone actually vote. Notably our young folk. When you think of the legislative changes that could occur in their lifetime: wages, education, employment, standard of living, it’s sad

Opinion

that the impact of these and their influence can so easily be dismissed. I actually know people who actively whinge about the Government (and council direction for that matter) and didn’t vote. Usually sends me into a spontaneous outburst and I am always incredulous at their explanations. What’s the point? They are all the same.’It’s this attitude which is so damaging because there is always a point of difference, always a choice; in this election for sure. It’s one of the reasons the Greens did so well: Kids, water, jobs The Nats did not hide their agenda: it was very clear what they were asking for support on. Now that the support has been given I wonder how long it will be before some of the usually left leaning strata who for whatever reason thought it was a popularity contest, will shortly feel the boot planted in their direction. I get what this Government wants to do. I will not be surprised by the savagery in this term, and I won’t be surprised when the masses start to question how or why it happened. Sometimes you get what you ask for‌

IT was a day of mixed emotions as Doug Watkinson, Cilla Gibson and Daphne Squibb said farewell to the school they have taught at for almost a century yesterday. “We’ve been here for a combined total of 99.5 years so it’s quite an achievement and we’ve seen a lot of changes over the time we’ve been at the school,” Mr Watkinson said. Mr Watkinson has been school principal for the last 22 years and was deputy principal for three years prior to that. “The school has doubled in size since I’ve been here. During that time there have been radical changes in education. “This year has been particularly difficult with the loss of about 100 pupils due to earthquake relocations but the school hasn’t lost any teachers so next year is looking positive.” Mr Watkinson planned to take up a ‘stress-free’ position with a small company and enjoy a quieter pace of life. Mrs Gibson started teaching at Burwood School in 1974 and said she had enjoyed teaching generations of pupils at the school. “It’s been wonderful to teach the children of pupils I originally taught. “Staying at the same school for a long period of time gives stability to the children and their families.” Mrs Gibson’s home is red-zoned so she planned to spend time considering housing options next year.

ARANUI Primary School students recently enjoyed a day in the country at Ballymoney, Merilee Rebbeck’s house, in Tai Tapu. The event included a visit from Father Christmas who presented each of the 168 pupils with a gift. The bus trip was sponsored by the Salvation Army.

Almost a century: Retiring Burwood School principal Doug Watkinson and teachers Cilla Gibson and Daphne Squibb have notched up a combined total of 99 years teaching at the school.

“I just hope that the school will go forward positively.” Mrs Squibb said it would be business as usual until she finished packing up her classroom. “I’ve been here since 1972 and have loved the friendly nature of the school.I’m going to travel and spend more time working for charities.”

City Mission on track for Christmas THE City Mission is providing its regular Christmas activities for the city’s less fortunate, but the tree is less spectacular this year, City Missioner Michael Gorman says. “When it’s in the Square it’s ‘big time’. This year it’s at Christ’s College and it’s smaller. But we will rise again.” The presents were being distributed as they came in, he said.

Christmas dinner will take place at Christchurch East School as usual, Mr Gorman said. “The Crusaders will be putting up the marquee at 7.30am on December 22.” The Mission was expecting about 600 to 700 people to attend the dinner, which would start with grace at 12.15pm, he said. “If people want to come, or feel they need to come, then they should come.”

Farmy Army gets into the Christmas spirit THE Farmy Army swings into action for its final operation in Christchurch today, with volunteers again being recruited to help out. The volunteers will be delivering food hampers to agencies working with the city’s most vulnerable people. “Back in August we thought ‘that was it’ after we’d done the Sunday roast deliveries with frozen meat donated by Alliance Group and vegetables donated by farmers from around Ashburton,” Federated Farmers Farmy Army’s coordinator of catering Helen Heddell said. “Such has been the true spirit of Christmas that we started planning for this last operation on Friday. As word got out the volume of donated food grew and grew. “This week Federated Farmers, Rural Woman New Zealand, Young Farmers, the Student Volunteer Army and the New Brighton Police have been putting food packs together. “Unlike August, we’re now delivering food packs to agencies who will then get them to those most in need. What the Farmy Army wants to encourage is the same spirit of community we share in rural New Zealand. “We hope recipients will ask their neighbours and family over to share their Christmas. Now is the perfect time to move forward, help each other and bolster our Canterbury spirit,” Mrs Heddell said.

House of Hearing

Council boss: Christchurch City Council chief executive Tony Marryatt.

CHRISTCHURCH City Council chief executive Tony Marryatt doesn’t beat around the bush describing how he feels at the end of a year many would rather forget. I’m pleased it’s over,” he says. “I’m stuffed. I need a break but I’m proud of what the organisation has achieved and proud of the part I’ve played in that.” That pride centres in part on the fact that after the devastating February 22 earthquake, 1250 council staff in the civic building were separated into 10 different locations and still managed to keep the business operating in the face of challenges few councils have encountered. Along the way the council endured its usual barrage of criticism and Mr Marryatt had a battle to hang onto his job. In a wide-ranging interview covering a range of subjects, the signs are there that the controversy which flared after his contract came up for renewal and he had to reapply for his job, cut deeply. At the height of the battle High Court action was taken to prevent Cr Aaron Keown taking part because of his support for Mr Marryatt. It proved unsuccessful. When finally the smoke cleared, Mr Marryatt held onto his job but with a short-term re-appointment through to the end of December 2014. He has been in the position four and a half years. Criticism he accepts is part of the job but he does not feel he has received a fair go from the local media. A group of business people wanted Mr Marryatt dumped. “I’ve had a vast number from the business community saying they disagreed with the criticism,” he says. “Over my contract, the local media didn’t give a balanced view of where the criticism (against him) came. That’s all history. I think there was an underlying motive in wanting a new CEO; the media never provided the motive and I’m not going to tell what it was. The media were aware of it.” He says in his 30 years in local government people disagreed on most decisions and the media tended to focus on them. “It’s news for the person who disagrees. The problem with democracy is that the vote can be 13-1 at council but media will give a lot of air time to the one who voted against.” The council’s communications manager Di Keenan, a former chief reporter at The Press, agrees Mr Marryatt has been misrepresented in the local media. “Everyone here thinks the world of him and it (the

criticism) has been hurtful for staff too.” Among the reasons given why some in the business community wanted him replaced were council’s much stated lack of transparency and a perceived intransigence by council towards developers and business groups. In response to that Mr Marryatt says matters can be commercially sensitive and people are often not accepting of council’s role in the process. “In the end everything gets communicated. On some of the bigger issues we could have done a better job explaining what we did but I always refute that we are not transparent. There are no secrets – we’ll tell you.” As far as developers are concerned, he says the council is bound by the city plan. “Everyone should abide by the plan although some developers feel they should be able to do what they like. That’s where the conflict comes. All I am is the guy administering the rules.” After all those years in local government he says he still enjoys the job – working through issues, getting decisions made - and now, trying to create a better Christchurch. Happy to work alongside the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, the biggest immediate problem for council, he says, is 1600 damaged buildings and major decisions will have to be made on what happens to the Town Hall, QEII stadium, the convention centre and AMI stadium next year. The council has a threepronged rebuild plan which he says will require careful prioritisation. The other pressing concern is the flood of building resource consent applications that will pour in early in the New Year. “We’re working with Fletchers on that and we’ll be taking on 70 extra staff. We’re starting to recruit now offering 15 percent above the market to attract people to the rebuild. We recognise it’s an issue.” That’s for the future. The important thing now is to have a break. “This year the job has been too much of my life,” he says. “I haven’t had a good balance of life and I’ve got to get back on an even keel. “It’s not just the hours spent sitting in the office, it’s just that the brain doesn’t stop working.” As far as reapplying for his job again when December 2014 rolls around, he says he won’t. “I’m not going through that process again.” He hopes council might consider a two-year extension.

Open-air fire ban starts tomorrow OPEN-air fires are banned in Christchurch City and its urban ‘fire districts’ from tomorrow, until further notice. Areas affected are Christchurch City, Brooklands, New Brighton, Sumner, Lyttelton, Governors Bay, Diamond Harbour, Little River and Akaroa, which are all urban fire districts within the council’s territory. A

properly supervised gas barbecue or hangi is exempt from the ban, but there must be a hose nearby, which is connected to a water supply. Anyone lighting any other open fire (including burning solid fuel in a brazier) - or allowing a fire to be lit on their premises- may be fined up to $20,000.

Some of the clients really look forward to seeing him. Despite living in the red zone and battling flooding and liquefaction, Mrs Snelson continued her volunteer activities throughout the year. Along with Meals on Wheels, Mrs Snelson also works as a mobile shop volunteer team member at Burwood Hospital and as a Civil Defence volunteer. After the September and February earthquakes Mrs Snelson’s Civil Defence training was put into practice during the weeks she spent volunteering at welfare centres. “At first it was a matter of door knocking to make sure all the residents were safe and then we distributed food, blankets and other items. Mrs Snelson said her career as a district nurse meant volunteering came naturally to her. “I’ve always believed in helping others. After retiring I worked for Nurse Maude and then gradually moved into volunteer work. “Most people just want to see a friendly face and have a chat. You might be the only person they see all day.

They really enjoy having a chat and seeing someone different. Mrs Snelson said she planned to continue volunteering for as long as possible. “It makes you feels as though you are doing something useful with your life.

MAINLAND PRESS 8 Hire business returns to central city Tom Doudney

EQUIPMENT rental company Hirepool has officially re-opened its central city branch on Moorhouse Ave last week, which was devastated like much of the city centre by the February 22 earthquake. Mark Powell, chief executive of Hirepool’s parent company New Zealand Rental, paid tribute to the commitment of staff during the difficult post-earthquake period. Staff had to cope with the loss of the central city branch, being squeezed into the Riccarton branch, and the sudden huge demand for their equipment for earthquake recovery. “All the guys have done a great job and they’ve done things they

Ngai Tahu establishes business partnership

HAWKINS Construction (South Island) and Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu have joined forces to foster employment opportunities for local Maori in the Canterbury region. It was announced on Wednesday that Hawkins had decided to become involved in He Toki ki te Rika (He Toki), a collaborative Maori trade training initiative focused on building Maori capability and leadership within the trades workforce. The move was prompted by discussions with Ngai Mark Powell Photo: Gilbert Wealleans Tahu around mutual aspirations, following predictions haven’t been asked to do just because of a labour shortage necessary for the Canterbury it’s happening in their community,” recovery. He Toki partners are Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, the Mr Powell said. Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT), the Built Environment Training Alliance (BETA) and Te Tapuae o Rehua with support from Te Puni Kokiri. Over 200 local Maori have been inducted into the He Toki trade training programme.

Hawkins South Island regional manager Quin Henderson said his team wanted to support enthusiastic and capable local Maori enter the workforce and Ngai Tahu was the obvious partner. “As well as identifying work opportunities, Hawkins will provide practical learning in the workplace for these trainees to support their work readiness. The benefit of this approach is that together we can widen the potential labour pool for the local construction industry, which can only be good for the regional rebuild.” Ngai Tahu kaiwhakahaere Mark Solomon said the aim was for the people to step up and become leaders in the wider community. “Partnerships with industry will support more Maori into the workforce and ensure local Maori play an important role in rebuilding Otautahi (Christchurch),” he said. “Investing and enhancing the skills of our local Maori will have long-term benefits for this region.”

A SURVEY of more than 1700 Canterbury businesses on the impacts of the Canterbury earthquakes will provide information to help businesses and local and Government organisations plan for the future. The Canterbury employers survey was conducted in October by the Department of Labour to find out the impact of the earthquakes; how businesses had responded to the disruption; and what the ongoing challenges were. Labour and Immigration Research Centre general manager Vasantha Krishnan said the survey findings indicated that, as expected, the earthquakes had a negative impact

difficulties retaining and attracting staff; and renewing insurance policies, particularly for employers with 50 or more staff. Resolving insurance payments was also an issue for employers. Looking ahead over the next 12 months, most employers expected the outlook to improve; and that they would either maintain or increase staff numbers. “Overall, positive long-term perceptions about quality of life in the region and strong hiring intentions suggest that negative impacts are seen by many as short term and will be overcome as the region gets back on its feet,” Ms Krishnan said.

Together with his New Zealand and Scottish heritage Scot Brown has developed Black Thistle as a celebration of Canterbury’s resilience in the harshest of conditions. Out of the debris and dust in Christchurch Scot Brown picked up the fragments of his broken wine department at FreshChoice Barrington and pressed on. He is now

Going green this Christmas

C

hristmas is one of my favourite mes of the year for a number of reasons. Most of all, it’s special because it reminds me of all the special people I am lucky enough to have in my life. The downside is it reminds me that I don’t spend enough me with these people, it prompts me to make more of an effort and address the issue when compiling my New Year’s resolu ons (yes, I do make them and some mes actually keep some of them) O en, these feelings are coupled with a sense of guilt for not having spent enough me with my nearest and dearest, along with the fact that once again I have neglected to express how special they are by pos ng them a Christmas card. I have actually bought the said cards and they are safely tucked away in a drawer, wai ng pa ently once again for the fountain pen to appear. This year, I am taking all my loved ones up the garden path by giving gi s and/or flowers that signal what they mean to me. When it comes to flowers, it’s hard to go past Christmas lilies. For me, nothing signifies the fes ve season like the aroma of true old-fashioned Christmas lilies. This year, lilies are a li le late in flowering and mine will open just in me, so don’t panic if you don’t see them for sale just yet. Be pa ent, take your me, and hunt some down for your home and loved ones this summer. A very economical op on is a po ed red Bonfire Salvia. These sparkling red bedding plants produce brilliant red spikes of candle-like flowers all summer long and for under a fiver ($5), are very hard resist. Wrapped in gold paper with a red ribbon, this gi look like its worth a great deal more.

For the gardener that has everything. Generally, this group is hard to buy for as their gardens are me culous, highly colour coordinated, and they have ridiculously dy garden sheds and vases full of freshly picked blooms from the garden. For them, the choices are simple such as a tool or two from the scrump ous new hand tools by Joseph Bentley. These stylish, meless tools are literally the bee's knees, quite the thing to have in your garden shed. I just love the hand cul vator; I use it to keep the soil weed-free and loose round my flowers and vege

My niece, Millie Vogan, who at the ripe old age of 4, just loves the garden. Wonderful isn’t it? O en, she takes my hand and shows me where the ladybirds are hiding, whispering I should be quiet as not to disturb them. Some mes, she brings me white bu erflies, as we hate those, that she has captured. Without giving too much away, she is going to find a copy of The Tiu NZ Kids’ Garden book under the tree this year along with something she can ride on. Packets of seeds are fun too. Choose quick-growing crops such as sunflowers, beans, or radishes. Alterna vely, pumpkins and courge es are also fun to give as when they start to form, kids can scratch their name in the skin of the vegetable and watch it grow.

THE Court and the Cathedral Choir are joining forces for a festive evening about Christmas, with Court Theatre actors doing readings and poetry while the Cathedral Choir sings a selection of carols, seasonal songs, and their popular a cappella hits. The show is a fundraiser for the Cathedral Choir. Court Theatre CEO Philip Aldridge came up with the idea after helping raise over $4 million to build the new Court Theatre. Aldridge’s son Dominic is a senior chorister and it will be a first for both to appear on the same stage. Aldridge said he was excited about giving a wider audience the chance to hear the choir sing. The Cathedral Choir has been singing temporarily in Christ’s College Chapel since the Cathedral was severely damaged in the February earthquake. Cathedral musical director Brian Law said they were all looking forward to the concert. All the performers are very excited about the show, which will be at Christ’s College Hall on Rolleston

Avenue on Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Tickets are available at www.courttheatre.org.nz or call The Court box office at 963 0870, or visit the box office off Bernard Street in Addington. Prices: adults $35; children $15; family ticket (2 adults, 2 children) $90.

spire to the very best of the sun’s posi on and views with ownership of this stunningly posi oned townhouse on Scarborough. The owner has absolutely treasured her me in the sun with the ďŹ nest of views all hers to wake up to, dine to, and go to sleep to. Unfortunately, me and her stage of life has forced her from her much loved home. Now is your opportunity to own and enjoy this truly spectacular posi on with excellent level drive on entry into the double garage with internal access. There are three spacious double bedrooms on the upper level, all with access to the upper deck with ďŹ rst-class Scarborough views of Sumner Bay, the magniďŹ cent stretch of water around Pegasus Bay through to the Kaikouras, across to the city lights at night, and the magical Southern Alps. The lower living level allows for a variety in the usage of the oor plan. The open plan dining and kitchen has external access to the herb garden and morning pa o area. Walk down the steps to the spacious lounge area with views of the coast and has dual access to the large decking area. There is also a large room currently used as my client’s oďŹƒce, but it could be a fourth bedroom, a media room, library, or living room. With three bathrooms, this execu ve townhouse does not compromise space in the living areas. The garden, whilst ďŹ lled with low maintenance plan ngs, does aord you a wonderful green space to enjoy. With a very mo vated vendor, this mid1990’s property has original neutral dĂŠcor throughout in impeccable condi on. However, you will s ll have room to modernise and add your own design air whilst securing the very best of ‘loca on loca on loca on’ on Scarborough for less than you think!

Defying the odds in Parklands

The Parklands Rugby Club had a challenging season this year, but it showed remarkable resilience as Mainland Press editor Chris Tobin discovered. imparting the skills of front row play. MacDonald brought home the national volunteer of more than last year, which was a record.” MacDonald says Lawlor could just as easily have the year award for his work with the Parklands club, won the national volunteer award. heading off a group of strong contenders. With the help of the Canterbury and national union, “I didn’t think I’d have a show,” MacDonald says. “One guy took time off work and raised half a million the club managed to have their three grounds repaired dollars for his club; a Hawkes Bay guy was a stalwart quickly – Lawlor described them as looking like Rotorua mud-pools – and then they were hammered of the Hawkes Bay union and a club. “I was just a coach from the back woods, again in the June 13 quake. Children missing out on swimming Tom Doudney

LEARN to Swim class attendance is good but children are missing out on important practice time in between lessons, Sport Canterbury chief executive Geoff Barry says. Christchurch lost 60 per cent of its pool space, mostly in the eastern suburbs, as a result of the earthquakes. To cope with the loss, two portable pools have been placed in Kaiapoi and at Queenspark School as part of Sport Canterbury’s Pools iN SchoolZ initiative. Mr Barry said those pools were taking 1000 children a week for Learn to Swim classes which was “a pretty good number”. “The Learn to Swim component is good but what we are seeing is that kids just aren’t in the water quite as much so from lesson to lesson they probably need to have a practice and a play and a muck around in the pool but they don’t get that.” Practice time was important in terms of developing both confidence and competence in the water. “It is a problem but we’re doing the best we can,” he said. Two more portable pools were to be placed in the Linwood-Woolston area to be ready in time for the new school year. It was yet to be decided where the pools would be placed but three schools in particular were being looked at, Mr Barry said. However that would still leave Christchurch well down on the amount of water space it previously had. “We’re talking about four pools out of 50 or 60 so we’re talking less than 10 percent of full recovery.”

IF you buy a ticket to get on the New Zealand cricket team’s train, you’re guaranteed a rollercoaster ride! At the Gabba last week, the Kiwis took the field believing they were world beaters. After beating Zimbabwe and having believed that the

Aussie team was weak, they created history. The events in Brisbane was quite a ‘pants down’ spanking by Michael Clarke’s boys. I know coach John Wright quite well and I watched him battle away at the wicket. He admitted he wasn't a player with much natural talent, but he still had the silver fern on his cap. He told me he would have given away all his cricketing achievements to be an All Black! I suspect Wright told the team, “Who the hell do you guys think you are?” He would have told

them to pull their heads in and stop thinking that they had a God-given right to win test cricket just by turning up. It was a bizarre test in Tasmania, with neither side taking the game by the throat. At the end, though, what came to me was that the Black Caps finally worked out that tests are won by a committed team and with teamwork. The win in Tasmania had John Wright’s thumbprint all over it. May he long continue to keep these young men displaying exactly what he did when he grafted away for his country.
