Neighbourly spirit endures Gina McKenzie

who moved to the area eight years ago with her husband, said her family wanted to buy land with their neighbours so they could keep the tight-knit community spirit alive. “We’ve hung our hopes on being able to buy a piece of land with a group of Brooklands people in the Spencerville or Kainga area. “We don’t want to lose what we have. It’s not just a community but a place where you know everyone’s names and care about each other.” She said most Brooklands residents wouldn’t want to live in tightly regulated subdivisions. “We all moved here for the lifestyle and freedom so most people wouldn’t consider moving into a subdivision with lots of rules and regulations.” Styx Community Network coordinator Jo Wall said Brooklands was irreplaceable and it made sense for families to band together to buy land. “You can’t find this lifestyle anywhere else. People are so involved in the community and generations grow up together with all these connections. “It’s natural to buy land together so we can stay living nearby.”

COMMUNITY ties in the small seaside village of Brooklands are so strong that families have bought land together in Ohoka while others hope green-zoned land in Spencerville will allow them to replicate their unique neighbourhood. Brooklands Residents’ Association president Annette Buxton said after the whole village was red-stickered and earmarked for demolition a group of six families including her own had pooled their resources to buy 0.4 hectare (one acre) blocks in the Millfield subdivision off Tram Road. “The people and relationships that we have built up over the years are so special that we want to keep living nearby.” Ms Buxton, who has lived in Brooklands since 1987, said the group would receive their land titles next October and would then begin developing their land. “It’s great that we’ll be able to move on together. It means that we have can move forward in a positive way and keep all the friends we’ve made over the years.” Brooklands Playcentre president Debbie Waghorn,

Cathedral walkway to open Christmas Eve Authority (Cera). Buses ran over the weekends and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings for six weeks, finishing on December 11. A total of 28,183 passengers took the trips and the final day was the most popular with 2870 people booking seats. Passengers were asked for a gold coin as a means of covering the estimated $220,000 operational costs. Contributions have totalled about $60,000 so far, including voluntary contributions by those using the Cathedral Square walkway.

THE public walkway through the central city red zone into Cathedral Square will be open for one last time on Christmas Eve. It will be open on Saturday for a shorter than usual amount of time, with the first entry at 9am and the last intake at 3pm. The walkway from Cashel Street to Cathedral Square was opened to the public during weekends from November 26 and on average about 20,000 people used it each weekend. Meanwhile more than 28,000 people have been through the central city red zone on bus tours organised by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery

Home quake repair targets announced Samantha Early

THE Earthquake Commission wants the worst quake-damaged homes in Christchurch fixed in just over 18 months. Earthquake Commission (EQC) general manager customer services Bruce Emson said they aimed to repair 80 percent of damaged Christchurch homes before the end of 2014 and within that, fix all homes with damage between $50,000 and $100,000 by June 2013. “It’s the worst first, for want of a better description,” he said. He labelled the targets, announced yesterday by the commission and Fletcher EQR for houses needing between $10,000 and $100,000 worth of repairs as demanding, but achievable.

The repairs were due to cost more than $3 billion, in addition to the $2.6 billion EQC had already paid out. Mr Emson said more than 7000 home repairs were complete and another 16,000 were in progress. “With EQC completing all (190,000) postFebruary full assessments, planning can ramp up as the settlement details for all EQC customers are finalised.” Carol Beaumont of Wainoni said she and her husband Greg were happy with the announcement. “It’s good. I think we will definitely come under that category which is really good. We’re happy with that.”

Ferrymead high rise likely to go Tom Doudney

THE seven-storey Watersedge apartment building in Ferrymead is likely to be demolished after insurers decided to pay out owners Parklane Properties. Parklane Properties director Wayne Wright said it was unlikely the building would be repaired, although that decision would have to be made at a body corporate meeting which would probably take place in January. “The problem is all the structure is cracked and the front has sunk so the building is not level.” Prior to the earthquakes, only 14 of the building’s 34 apartments had been sold. Mr Wright said the news, which he received last week, was sad although not unexpected. “It’s a magnificent building and there’s a lot of emotion gone into building it and the people who lived there loved to live there.”

If the decision was made to demolish the building, it was unlikely to be rebuilt as it would probably struggle to attract new residents after the quake. The building, completed in 2008, was controversial at the time, being criticised by residents in the area for its height and design. Hagley-Ferrymead councillor Yani Johanson said he did not think the community would mind if the building wasn’t there in future. “Obviously you don’t like to see misery on anyone so I do feel for the property owner because that’s a difficult situation but it was my view and still is my view that that location is inappropriate for high rise development.” Christchurch City Council’s master planning of the Ferrymead area provided an opportunity for improvement on urban design in the area, he said.

A Christmas message DEAR readers and advertisers, We thank you for your loyalty and support of Mainland Press during what has been such a difficult year for Christchurch. From all our team, we send our best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, and we look forward to 2012 with optimism and a commitment to keep bringing you the best in community news and information. Pier and Charlotte Smulders, Mainland Press publishers.

She is expecting her second child and is waiting for a decision on what repairs to her green-zoned family home will cost. Mrs Beaumont said she was still in limbo as the final cost of repairing the house was hovering around the $100,000 mark. “With the number of people in the same position you would have expected it (earthquake repairs) to take at least two years, but we thought we’d know what was going on before this long.” Fletcher EQR general manager David Peterson said the programme had accelerated significantly in recent months, with the expansion of the hub network and contracting resources, along with the reducing frequency

of aftershocks and emergency work. “Our recent run rate has been above 1400 completed home repairs per month, which translates to more than 70 homes per day… we are returning between $40 million and $50 million per month to the local economy through payments to contractors.” Mr Peterson said they were building up to meet the coming demand. “To date we have allocated work as it has become available. Going forward, with the workload fully defined and ready to action, it is clear we will need more resources. With that in mind we have been recruiting contractors from within Canterbury as the first priority, and also from the rest of New Zealand.”

Robin scores hat-trick of art awards Gina McKenzie WHEN Robin Haskell was paralysed from the waist down due to medical misadventure during an operation eight years ago he never imagined that he’d develop into an award winning artist. Earlier this month Mr Haskell won the first prize in the Parafed Canterbury art awards for his sketch of former All Blacks coach Graham Henry and also took out the people’s choice award and art encouragement award. “I was down for about a week after I was paralysed and then I decided that I would adapt to this and live a full life. “I took up art classes three years ago and really enjoy sharing my work with others.” Mr Haskell said it was important for people to find something they enjoyed in life and pursue it. “It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you enjoy it Sharing the joy: Robin Haskell enjoys bringing a smile to and if you can make others happy too then you’ve done other residents at his Shirley rest home by decorating the walls with his award-winning art. Visitors flock to arty exhibition

Close encounters: The Off The Wall exhibition allows visitors to get right up close to the costumes.

THE Canterbury Museum’s new exhibition Off the Wall, which opened on December 2, attracted more than 8000 visitors in its opening week. The exhibition features some of the best designs from the World of WearableArt (WOW). The museum’s exhibitions manager Stephen Pennruscoe attributed the early success of the exhibition to the fact

people can see the WOW garments so close up. “The first time I saw the WearableArt Awards Show, I just wanted to get up close to look at the garments,” Mr Pennruscoe said. “This exhibition allows you to do exactly that. “One day last week 1799 people came through the exhibition”. Off the Wall runs until March 18, 2012.

IN our last issue of Mainland Press readers would have noticed an interview with the chief executive of the Christchurch City Council Tony Marryatt. We called him ‘The survivor’ and told how tough a year he has experienced hanging onto his job against a business lobby that wanted him replaced while at the same time dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake. I interviewed Mr Marryatt last Wednesday and was not aware he had a pay rise pending. This matter was discussed public excluded by the council the next day. It was a big surprise to learn on Monday, therefore, that his salary has shot up to $538,529 a year, effective from July 1 this year. All relative to the market we are told. But it’s more than Prime Minister John Key earns. Given the hardship thousands have suffered in this city during the past year it would have been nice to see Mr Marryatt decline the $68,128 or - this would be a big ask I guess - handing a portion, if not all of the amount over to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Fund. That would have been a real Christmas treat and would

Chris Tobin editor@mainlandpress.co.nz

have boosted Mr Marryatt’s flagging profile with the public. The timing seems wrong and many ratepayers will be angered by his pay rise. He can expect another rocky ride next year. On another matter if I had a Christmas wish I think I’d ask our consumer society to give us a break. I can remember when New Zealand used to more or less shut down completely for several days around Christmas. People would be ‘shopped out.’ It was a time to fully relax for a couple of days and most shops would be shut. Now if you flick on your TV on Christmas Day you will be bombarded with advertisements for Boxing Day sales. You’ve got to get out there and shop again. Get past Boxing Day and then another bombardment roars in advertising New Year’s Day sales. Christmas should be a special time to savour and enjoy without outside pressures. That’s what I intend to do. Merry Christmas. See you in our next issue on January 13.

Drivers sober and safe nearing Christmas THE vast majority of the 17,000 drivers breath tested in a police alcohol blitz last weekend were found to be sober and driving safe vehicles. Canterbury road policing manager Inspector Al Stewart said the operation had been a success. “We are particularly pleased that out of 17,468 drivers tested only one driver under 20 years old was caught in breach of the recently enacted zero-alcohol law. It looks like the message is getting through to the younger drivers, and the work of groups like SADD is

really paying off,” Inspector Stewart said. “Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for older drivers, with 62 caught over the limit. There is still a small number of people who don’t understand the dangers of driving drunk - police will continue to target those high-risk drivers and they can expect to be caught.” Inspector Stewart said the highest excess breath alcohol reading recorded during the operation was 1102mgms - nearly three times the legal adult limit.

Edgeware village coming back

Christmas goodies: Locals flocked to the Christmas event last Saturday at Edgeware Village, which was organised to entice shoppers back.

THE rebuilding of the Edgeware supermarket is expected to significantly improve the fortunes of businesses in the Edgeware shopping centre. The Supervalue supermarket was one of about 12 businesses in the area to close following the February earthquake, which saw the shopping centre basically halved. Currently only 14 businesses are operating. Tim Siegert of Super Liquor said prior to the earthquake, Saturday mornings were “pretty steady” but without the supermarket there had been a drop-off in foot traffic in the area. Owner/operator of the supermarket Stephen Anderson said once resource consent was obtained construction would take about six months. “All things going well, we would expect to reopen in mid-2012,” Mr Anderson said. The new supermarket would be slightly larger and a lot more efficient,

he said. In a bid to attract shoppers back to the area, a group of business owners organised a ‘Christmas at Edgeware’ event last Saturday, with the help of Recover Canterbury. “The aim of the event was to encourage the locals back, to let them know who is open and that they are open and to thank them for the support they have given the area,” workgroup co-ordinator for Recover Canterbury Sonia Prince said. “There was a significant increase in foot traffic and turnover for the businesses and they were very pleased with it.” Mr Siegert agreed the event worked very well. “Foot traffic was up 15 to 17 percent for my store,” he said. Ms Prince said “as many as possible” of the businesses that were currently closed were expected to come back. There were also potential new developments to come up in the area, she said.

DID Australia’s military history begin in the crucible of Gallipoli in 1915? Most Australians would think it did, but a new book just written by Christchurch man Frank Glen says otherwise. Australians at war in New Zealand, the title of his latest book, tells the story of how significant numbers of our neighbours over the Tasman served in the Land Wars of the 1860s. How this came about was due to the British government deciding to withdraw its troops to the consternation of the European settlers in New Zealand. “There was more sympathy for the Maoris in London than for the settlers,” Mr Glen explained. Recruitment began in Melbourne and Sydney to fill the gap once the British reduced their forces. Five regiments comprising in total 2500 men were recruited and served in the New Zealand Militia. A sloop of war was sent from Victoria also. “The book is the story of where they (the Australians) fought, a record of their major engagements and records the dead and wounded and where the dead are buried. “It also analyses how effective the New Zealand government was. They said if the Australians fought for three years each soldier would get 100 acres of land. Back in Australia they said it was immigration by stealth.” Mr Glen traces the lives of some of the soldiers after the war. Some of them had colourful lives. Few would know that a well known bushranger, Captain Moonlit, real name Andrew George Scott, saw action in the wars. He ended up being hanged in Sydney. Another was Edward St John Daniel, a Victoria Cross winner, a deserter from the Royal Navy who lurched from one scandal to another, but showed courage in the face of battle. Mr Glen said he tapped a great source of material from the Argus newspaper of Melbourne which had sent a correspondent to the war, Howard Willoughby. “He wrote millions of words during the Land Wars, whole pages and you see it all from the perspective of a

colonial Australian; the difference is quite sharp. “He criticised the New Zealand settlers as being greedy and mean. He felt the settlers were land grabbing and the New Zealand government was not worth supporting.” The book was launched in Canberra by the New Zealand High Commissioner in Australia, Major General Martyne Dunne, with military historians from around the world present. A New Zealand launch was recently held at Merivale.

ECan to rebuild office buildings ENVIRONMENT Canterbury (ECan) commissioners have given their seal of approval to plans to repair and rebuild its Kilmore St buildings. The commissioners endorsed a report and approved a recommendation at a Christchurch City Council meeting last week. Chair of commissioners Dame Margaret Bazley welcomed progress towards ECan returning to the central city. “As an organisation we are committed to returning to the central city and being part of the recovery of Christchurch City. The prospect of building a new sustainable building is an opportunity to embrace the principles set out in the Central City Plan.” The cost of the rebuild at 58 Kilmore St is likely to be covered by insurance. A project manager, quantity surveyor and design consultants will be appointed soon for the first stage of the work, through to April.

Counting down to New Year’s Eve Cantabrians can look forward to one of the best Garden City SummerTimes New Year’s Eve parties at the Event Triangle area in North Hagley Park on 31 December. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says it will be a time to remember as people gather in the Park and say good riddance to 2011. “This year has been simply awful for a lot of Cantabrians. While it’s true we’ve had some amazing opportunities to come together as a community – I would never wish the kind of hardships many of our residents have faced this year on anyone.

Some final preparations are made to Central Library Peterborough last week.

The library collection will include books for all ages, a range of magazines, world language material, CDs, DVDs, talking books and newspapers. Family history resources will also be available and staff will be on hand to help customers use the service. Mayor Bob Parker says the opening of the new library is wonderful news for the people of Christchurch. “Now, more than ever, our community is looking for opportunities to unwind. Programme to look at future of Council-owned buildings A major programme that will provide a framework for future decision making around 1600 Christchurch City Councilowned buildings was presented to last week’s Council meeting. The Facilities Rebuild Plan project includes Council-owned commercial buildings and community housing facilities. Under the first part of the programme, the Council has been undertaking Detailed Engineering Evaluations of its buildings. This helps to determine the level of damage a building has sustained and the types of repairs or other work it may need. This level of assessment also provides a measurement

of a building’s capacity to withstand future earthquakes, expressed as a percentage of the New Building Standard (NBS). The NBS was introduced after the February earthquake The results of these assessments will help to inform decisions about the future of a facility, along with a number of other factors including insurance cover, the building’s heritage value, how often it is used and its long term benefits for the community. All major decisions about a facility will be made by elected members. Project Sponsor Michael Aitken says this is just the beginning of a long term process, which aims to provide safe buildings for staff

to work in and the public to visit. “The length of time it will take to repair or make another decision about a facility depends on the type of facility, the level of damage, the results of engineering assessments and the insurance process. We are likely to face some tough decisions in the next few years about buildings that are too badly damaged or will cost too much to repair because we unfortunately don’t have the money to repair everything.”

Christchurch locals urged to act as ambassadors for city Christchurch locals are being urged to share their inside knowledge and lend a helping hand to visitors confused by the changing face of the city. Over the coming months thousands of outof-town visitors are expected in Christchurch and some may struggle to find their way around and could miss out on discovering the exciting new places to shop, eat and be entertained that have popped up in Christchurch since the quake. City tourism agencies are doing their best to get fresh information about what’s happening in the city out to visitors,

but can’t reach everyone so they need Christchurch residents to help out by giving any visitors they come across who look lost, confused or worried a friendly smile and advice on how to get around and where are the good places to go. One crucial place visitors may need help finding is the new i-SITE Visitor Centre, which is now located on Rolleston Avenue, next to Canterbury Museum. Staffed from 8.30am to 5pm seven days a week and open every day this summer, except Christmas Day, the i-SITE is a one-stop shop for information about things to see and do in Christchurch and Canterbury.

Sumner engineer wins award CAMILLA Gibbons has been named Young Engineer of the Year at the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards. Ms Gibbons, 29, has been working to assess hills and roads in the Port Hills for hazards, mapping boulder formations and when needed, bolting them down or blasting them. She originally came from South England on a one-year secondment, but has stayed here for three years. Her Sumner home was badly damaged in the quakes, but she said it has never crossed her mind to leave Canterbury. Awards convenor Gretchen Kivell said it was Camilla’s courage under fire that made her stand out. She won a trophy, certificate, and $2000.

Going ahead: The Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston, shown in an artist’s impression, will still be built despite the cost rising.

THE cost of building a new aquatic centre in Rolleston has gone up by $1 million because of the Canterbury earthquakes, but it will still go ahead. The Selwyn District Council said all five tenders submitted to build the Selwyn Aquatic Centre were higher than anticipated because of construction material and labour price hikes following the Canterbury earthquakes. Quantity surveyor Davis Langdon had come up with an estimated cost of $13.7 million for the project earlier this year. But now, the total estimated cost is $14.7million. Council aquatic facilities manager Kathy Moore said the company had done 14 estimates for similar projects and this was the first time one had gone over their budget. Naylor Love Construction has won the nearly $12.5 million tender to build it. Mayor Kelvin Coe said the council had to make some tough decisions on these projects, particularly because of the current financial climate. “We’re pleased the pool can go ahead without any compromise in quality as a result of changed financial arrangements including extending the loan period, a reduced cost in loan servicing, and a higher target for corporate sponsorship, Mayor Coe said. “It also means we’re not anticipating any increase in the targeted pool rate for at least 10 years. A recent Lotteries grant of $680,000 was a great boost to the external fundraising target. “We can now proceed with building a pool we can all be proud of, Mayor Coe said. Naylor Love regional manager Pete Lockhart was pleased to hear the news. The company won the 2010 Master Builders commercial project of the year for the Queenstown Aquatic Centre and built both the Dudley Park Aquatic Centre and Centennial Pool in Canterbury. The facility will be located on the corner of Goulds Rd and Broadlands Dr, Rolleston and will feature an eight lane 25-metre pool, a hydrotherapy pool with spa area, a learn-to-swim pool, and a leisure pool. It’s due to open in January 2013.

First Canterbury Fund grants announced A NEW BMX track in Kaiapoi and a youth development programme are among the first 48 recipients of $4 million Canterbury Fund. The announcement comes two months after launching the Canterbury Fund, a joint initiative between the Vodafone Foundation and the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust to help rebuild Christchurch.

The majority of the $1 million fund will be provided as smaller grants, between $5000 and $25,000 each, for youth and communityfocused organisations. All recipient organisations have plans that range from rebuilding a sport facility to mentoring and counselling young people. One of the first recipients was 180 Degrees

Trust, which will receive funding for a youth co-ordinator to support their development programmes to help troubled youth. Pam Glover from 180 Degrees Trust couldn’t speak highly enough of the fund. “Thanks to them, we are going to be able to help so many more people. It’s just fantastic.”

Kaiapoi BMX Club secretary Sharon Reddish said club members were over the moon. “This grant is going to fund the rebuild of our BMX track. In Kaiapoi, all the sport facilities have been ruined by the earthquake and with this grant, we will be the first to reopen. That’s awesome.”

Geologist wins communication award A SCIENTIST who many New Zealanders have turned to for trustworthy commentary on the Christchurch earthquakes has been honoured for his communication skills. University of Canterbury geologist Dr Mark Quigley has won the 2011 Prime Minister’s Science Media Communication Prize. He receives $50,000 with another $50,000 allocated for developing his science media communication skills. Mr Quigley was consistently available to explain the science behind the shakes, despite living in a condemned red zone house surrounded by liquefaction, with no sewerage, water or power. Since 2010, he has delivered more than 40 lectures in New Zealand and overseas, including three in Christchurch attended by more than 2400 people. He has published seven peerreviewed research articles on the Christchurch quakes. Professor Jarg Pettinga, who heads the University of

Mr Quigley said that one of the most difficult issues he had grappled with over the last 15 months was the pressure to be optimistic. “I am an optimist anyway, but when it’s your life and your community and others are relying on you, you do tend to look for the bright spots. It’s been a balancing act to give accurate information that is hopeful, but not unrealistic.”

Smoking discouraged in the parks of Selwyn SMOKING will be discouraged at playgrounds, parks, sports grounds, and council events in Selwyn. The smoke-free public outdoor areas policy follows a similar one by the Christchurch City Council. The council developed the stance with help from Smokefree Canterbury in an effort to avoid children and young people seeing smokers as role-models. Strategic policy analyst Rachel Pugh told the council in her report that a public survey in Rolleston answered by 163 respondents showed that most thought public areas should be smoke-free. The policy is not a ban and will not be enforced, but encourages smokers not to light up in those places. It will be implemented by having smoke-free symbols on signage, advertising, and other promotions over the next two years. The initiative is being supported by Smokefree Canterbury and Partnership Health with funding of $15,000. Smokefree Canterbury chair Cheryl Ford congratulated the council. “The Selwyn District Council’s adoption of this policy sends a strong signal of support for Smokefree New Zealand 2025, a goal which has now been endorsed by the Government. Tobacco use is a major public health issue, killing 5000 New Zealanders every year. Although smoking rates are falling, we still have 20 percent of adults smoking, while rates among Maori are more than 40 percent,” Ms Ford said.

Festive fun in Riccarton

Animal humour: Myah Guy and Michelle Hsieh dressed up to inspire people to get creative and have fun.

IF you spied a pink bunny and a spotted cat indulging in a bit of light-hearted fisticuffs in Rotherham street, you weren’t dreaming. The cat, Michelle Hsieh, assisted by Myah Guy, describes herself as an “unemployed rabbit” and devised the Facebook project as an attempt to get as many people as possible to have fun.

Michelle said they want to encourage people to step out of their comfort zones by indulging in a bit of silliness and doing something that they would not normally do. Michelle and Myah certainly attracted a lot of attention as they browsed the shops in Riccarton to the amusement of pedestrians and passing motorists.

Valuable cathedral artwork missing AN artwork of bronzed doors made by sculptor Ria Bancroft for Christchurch’s Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is still missing. Cathedral management board chairman Lance Ryan said police have been told because of its history and value, but hoped there was nothing sinister in their disappearance. Mr Ryan said they believed a parishioner or friend of the cathedral got the doors for safekeeping from one of the staff at the site. The doors, made in the late 1970s, depict Christ’s death and resurrection. They are 51cm high and 79cm wide and have a replacement value of $185,000. Mr Ryan said they had almost no sale value as they were designed specifically for church art and would be recognisable as stolen property for a long time. Christchurch Police Detective Sergeant Richard Quested said scrap metal dealers were asked to be on the look out for the doors. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sergeant Quested at 03 363 7574 or diocesan financial administrator Paddy Beban at 021 449 791.

DIESEL S L A N O I S S E F O R P E L C I H E V L DIESE Diesel vehicles have become increasingly trusted for their durability and toughness, whether they are commercial or recreational vehicles. However they need specialized care to work to their optimum performance and longevity. Diesel Doctor Ltd on Lincoln Road are the experts in diesel vehicle tune-ups, warranty repairs and servicing. Since establishing the business in 1994, Tony Wessels has seen the transition of the diesel from smoky, heavy and noisy to the sophisticated high tech vehicles of today. Specializing in all makes and models, Tony says that proper care of your diesel engine is not only important for your vehicle, but saves you money in the long run and is also better for the environment. Technological advances have lowered emission levels and allowed diesel cars to become quicker, quieter and more economical. Diesel vehicles operate under higher pressure than standard engines and therefore need regular maintenance to ensure they perform at their best. Diesel Doctor’s wide range of specific diesel oils means they can give your vehicle the

perfect service to manufacturer’s specifications, particularly the high specs required for European models. Diesel Doctor Ltd is able to carry out all your maintenance to the highest level. As sophisticated electronics now control more of the car’s functions, knowledge and expertise is essential to keep diesel engines in top condition. “With over 60 years collective experience between the three of us, our experience is the customer’s gain” says Tony. Diesel Doctor has the latest technology to diagnose problems quickly and carry out both mechanical and electronic service or repairs. Customer enquiries are welcomed by Diesel Doctors located at 288 Lincoln Road Addington where there is ample off street parking or phone 338 8884.

TOP TIPS IF YOU OWN A DIESEL VEHICLE… We’ve tapped into the Diesel Doctors 50 years experience with all different makes and models of diesel vehicles to put together a few Tips for maximum reliability, power and long life 1. Check oil and water before you leave for a long drive, and when you reach your destination, or drop in and get us to check be for you leave at no charge. 2. Use clean fuel from a service station, which has high diesel turnover. 3. Keep your fuel tank over half full to avoid condensation and the “Diesel Bug” – an algae growth which blocks filters and robs power. 4. Check charging system and ensure your battery is big enough for easy starting and easier on the alternator. 5. Ensure the vehicle has been Serviced within 5000km or 6months. 6. Use a diesel conditioner regularly to keep your fuel system clean. 7. If going through deep water, four wheel driving, Check 4WD Transmission/Transfer case/Diffs etc catch problems early. 8. Check timing belt is in good condition, as can cause extensive damage. 9. Check Antifreeze/Rust inhibitor Regularly. This should be replaced every 2 years to prevent cooling system rusting , blockages and overheating. 10. Have your servicing done by a Diesel Specialist – not all workshops can deal with modern onboard computers and diesel systems.

DRIVING TIPS

1. If you drive an auto, leave in drive around town with overdrive off. Drive as if it is a manual transmission in the hills and when towing. 2. Take regular breaks.

EQC is currently assessing land damage. Once we understand the implications of any necessary land remediation, we will organise geotechnical assessments where and when required.

Until we have certainty over your land zoning we will not be able to complete a detailed assessment of your home, unless it is uninhabitable.

All detailed assessments of our customers’ homes in the residential red zones are now complete.

A scope of works will be created for the repair or rebuild of your home. If additional foundation work is required the associated cost will be included in the scope of work.

BUT will you enjoy being at the beach, exposing your body? If you don't feel ďŹ t and you’re not in shape, then it’s me to take control! Kick-start a new ďŹ tness and weight regime by se ng realis c goals for yourself.

Take notes

Take note of your weight and as your programme develops, you will have a visible record of your progress. You may not like what you see now, but when you start losing pounds, you will start to get excited over what you have achieved.

You are what you eat

A food diary can reveal your ea ng habits of which you are probably unaware. Keep a log of everything you eat for at least seven days. Note the me, the food you ate, the quan ty and any symptoms like feeling bloated, red, or energised. Write down how you are feeling before ea ng. Did you have cravings, were you stressed, lonely, or bored to eat what you did?

Don't overeat

A commitment to exercise on a regular basis is be er than no commitment at all and you are more likely to s ck to your exercise regime. Thirty minutes of cumula ve exercise every day will make a dierence. Moreover, ten-minute bursts have been proven to help in overall health. A Swiss ball works your back and abdominal muscles while giving you support. The more you work with the ball, the stronger these muscles become. It is possible to get a pre y good workout with just the ball and your own body weight, and doing crunches and reverse crunches using one will do more for the abs than working out on the oor.

Good trainers

The right footwear is essen al. Don't exercise in worn-out shoes. Your feet need to be supported and comfortable. Prevent injury before it happens. If you hate the gym, exercise your limbs by walking or running and have fun while you do it.

“Every piece of furniture and every fitting right down to the very last detail was painstakingly planned out. It was a dream come true and a real labour of love.” Cook said he wanted to offer cinemagoers the same unique experience that the Metro Gold had provided in a new location. “When people came to see a film,

THE 2012 Festival of Flowers will have a new venue in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens when it opens on February 17. Alan Jolliffe, chairperson of the Christchurch Garden City Trust, said that while the loss of the traditional Christ Church cathedral as the venue was a blow to the festival, he was delighted to have an alternative venue. “We are committed to a ‘new look’ for 2012 and we are very excited about this new venture. “As a charitable trust, we feel that it is important to engage the community and therefore, we are offering all events and displays free of charge.” Festival manager Devi Benson said he wanted to inspire visitors with the beauty of these floral displays. “We invite visitors to take an exciting journey with surprises sprinkled throughout the Gardens.” The festival begins with a lively and colourful opening concert, presenting songs of joy and hope for the future. Highlights include a commemorative garden event, song-writing competition, outdoor movie night, and storytelling with Margaret Mahy. A range of displays including an environmental art installation, pop-up floral art, Ikebana exhibitions, a topiary menagerie, Oderings archways, and port-a-loos on the pine mound will be scattered throughout the gardens. The festival will run until March 4.

Bright future: Rodney Cook hopes to entice art-house cinema lovers back into the city by opening a new cinema complex in Sydenham.

it was a complete experience and we offered something different that responded to their needs. “Films like Gloomy Sunday ran for a decade because people felt a real connection to the whole experience and would come back to see it again and again.” The reopening of the Court Theatre had inspired Cook to continue his search for the perfect site after a plan to build a new $3.2 million cinema complex in Cashmere fell through earlier this year. “Everything was all ready to go and then we couldn’t get council consent because we didn’t have enough car parking. “It was a bit of a setback, but I’m determined to carry on and open next year because I know people in Christchurch really need an arthouse cinema. Cook also remained confident that his Arts Centre cinemas would eventually reopen. “The only way to keep going is to believe that the future will be better and that things will fall into place.”

Festival will brighten up Christchurch NZ

• NO COMPLIMENTARIES

CHRISTCHURCH cinema owner Rodney Cook plans to revive the city’s art-house film scene by opening a new complex in Sydenham in mid-2012. Cook lost his Metro Gold cinemas near Cathedral Square in February’s earthquake and his Academy and Cloisters cinemas are both located in the damaged Arts Centre. “We’re looking at a few different locations and plan to have a threeor four-screen cinema modelled on the Metro Gold cinemas. “We already have two designs for the cinema and hope to have it up and running by June or July.” Cook, who moved to Akaroa with his wife Annette after February’s earthquake, said losing the Metro Gold cinemas had devastated the couple as much as the loss of their Clifton Hill family home of 35 years. “It was like losing a family member. We had poured all our love into recreating a 1930-styled cinema and to see it fall apart like that was just awful.

ONE of the most highly anticipated additions to the Ford range is the Territory turbo diesel, a model talented enough to write another chapter in the Territory success story. Ford Australia unearthed an absolute winner in 2004 when they launched the Territory large recreational 4WD. Seven years into its model life, you would expect this star to be fading a little, but thanks to a clever mid-life styling makeover and the arrival of a V6 diesel engine option, it looks like it will burn bright for a while longer. The really big news on the engine front is the all-new 140kw 2.7-litre TDCi V6 turbodiesel engine, available in both rear- and all-wheel-drive forms. Pricing is aggressive enough to grab the attention of buyers shopping for a large recreational 4WD. Prices start at $49,990 for the seven-seat TX rear-wheel drive and $69,990 for the range topping 4WD Titanium, the model supplied for this road test. Staying safe on the road when the heat is on THE one thing you don’t need this summer is a vehicle that breaks down, or worse, has a mechanical failure that puts you, your passengers, and other road users in danger. A car engine usually operates at around 95 degrees, depending on the make and model. Place that same vehicle in a long line of stop-start traffic inching its way uphill to the beach or the camping ground in 30 degree plus heat and if things are going to fail, it will often be at times like this. The Motor Trade Association (MTA) says there is plenty you can do, though, to reduce the chances of problems occurring with your vehicle. Some simple steps that can help save you time, money, and headaches during your trip: • Consider a pre-trip inspection by an MTA technician as repairs can be more costly on the road. Ask them to check things like the air conditioning, cooling system, drive belts, hoses, clamps, and brakes, along with fundamentals like fluids, oil, and water. • Check the condition and air pressure in all tyres, including the spare, to make sure they are roadworthy. Remember, heat is a tyre’s biggest enemy. • Replace ragged wiper blades and make sure the wash reservoir tank is full and you’ve added proper cleaning agents – not dishwashing liquid. • Make sure your sun visors are doing the job. Glare from the sun, either directly or from other vehicles, can blind you temporarily. It’s also a good idea to have an emergency kit in your car just in case. It should include: • Jumper cables • A jack and wheel-brace • Torch • Water for both the radiator and yourself (around 2 Litres) • Blanket and towel • Emergency reflectors.

Amalgamation needed to give Double football success bowls clubs a future CANTERBURY football enjoyed double success over the weekend, with both Canterbury United and the club’s youth side winning important games against Waitakere City rivals. The senior side won its game against defending champions Waitakere City 2-1 at English Park in a must win characterised by the defence of goalkeeper Adam Highfield. The win moved the team into third on the table and was crucial for keeping alive hopes of playing in the Champion’s League of Oceania next year. Meanwhile Canterbury United Youth knocked out favourites Auck-

CHRISTCHURCH’S bowls clubs have been advised they will need to embrace widespread change including the amalgamation of many clubs in order to become financially sustainable. Bowls Canterbury convened a meeting of the city’s 36 clubs to present a 106 page report detailing the current “unsustainable situation. The report, co-ordinated by Bowls Canterbury and Sport Canterbury, found that out of 32 Christchurch bowls clubs for which financial details were available, 17 lost money in the 2011 financial year. Additionally, 25 percent of all clubs had fewer than 50 members and a further 25 percent had only 50 – 75 members. The report also predicted funding would become more of a struggle due to a massive increase in the cost of insurance, reduced gaming trust funding, membership decline, more competition for funding due to quake damage and a loss of business sponsorship, also related to the quakes. Among its solutions, the report advocated a reduction in the number of clubs to between 20 and 25, better financial management and a potential new indoor bowls facility to take advantage of the ‘pay for play’ market. Bowls Canterbury president Peter Harris said the club’s had generally reacted well to the presentation. “They realised that change was inevitable. The financial circumstances a lot of the clubs are going to find themselves in will certainly dictate their future or lack of it. The report also identified “clusters of clubs in close

proximity, such as three within 3kms in Papanui and 11 clubs within 8.5 kilometres in the inner city area. Mr Harris said these clubs would be encouraged to start talking amongst themselves about possibilities for amalgamation. “At Bowls Canterbury we can’t force that issue, it’s entirely over to the clubs, he said. “I would like to be optimistic that they will be proactive in their approach. The Burwood Park and Dallington clubs are moving towards amalgamation on the Dallington site, as are the Redcliffs and Mt Pleasant clubs on the Redcliffs site.

Gould to be guest speaker AUSTRALIAN rugby league legend Phil Gould will be the guest speaker at a Northern Bulldogs luncheon to be held in Kaiapoi next year. Gould played 104 games for four NRL clubs as well as coaching at both NRL and State of Origin level.

Over the last decade he has earned a reputation as a television commentator and newspaper columnist prepared to speak his mind. The luncheon will be upstairs at the Kaiapoi Club at 12pm on February 17 and cost $100 per person.

land City in a thrilling semi-final encounter in Auckland, winning 9-8 after a penalty shoot out. Earlier Canterbury had led 2-0 at half time after goals to Ken Yamamoto and Aaron Spain. However the Aucklanders rallied with three goals of their own in the second half and it took a late second goal for Yamamoto to take the match into extra time and the subsequent penalty shootout. In the final later that afternoon, the youth team beat Waitakere City 2-1, mirroring the result of the senior side. Yamamoto again played a starring role despite not coming away with any goals.
