Christchurch Airport signs up top sports stars TWO leading Canterbury sportsmen have signed on to represent Christchurch International Airport overseas. Cricketing great Sir Richard Hadlee and rugby hero Brad Thorn are the first of a team of Christchurch International Airport ambassadors and will represent the airport in India and Japan respectively. Sir Richard will begin his duties next month, travelling to India with airport managers to meet airline and travel industry executives and other officials. Christchurch International Airport chief

executive Jim Boult said that Sir Richard’s ambassadorial role would help raise the profile in India of not only the airport, but also Christchurch and the South Island. “Sir Richard is a cricketing legend recognised the world over and particularly in India, where cricket has a very strong following,” Mr Boult said. “He played in 86 test matches for New Zealand over 18 years and is the greatest all-rounder in the history of the game. He is well-known and highly respected in India.” Sir Richard said Christchurch Airport was the

AMERICAN sand sculpting champion Leonard Gonzales of San Diego says the Christchurch sandcastle building competition to be held for the first time at New Brighton beach this weekend will prove a great attraction for the city in the coming years. Mr Gonzales, his wife Irene, son Leonard Jnr, 6, and daughter Mina, 4, are part of a contingent that hails from San Diego and Los Angeles here to take part in the event . “New Zealand has always been a place I wanted to explore and enjoy,” he said. “Sand sculpting is what we are here for and we want New Zealanders to understand what we have to offer. I think it’s a wonderful thing for this city.” Mr Gonzales, 36, a business analyst, is

captain of the Imperial Beach Posse team made up of family and friends who have won the United States Sand Sculpting Open for three of the last five years. Roger Turner, chairman of the Pegasus Bay Charitable Trust, which is organising the event, said they had battled the odds to make it happen. The competition was cancelled last March due to the February 22 earthquake. “It has been tough trying to generate enthusiasm,” he said. “A lot of the public are still shell-shocked especially this side of the city. Hopefully, we’ll bring some light and hope.” The trust has raised all the money to run the event, which Mr Turner said had been difficult, particularly with businesses

struggling through what had been a difficult year. “The city council pulled back funding, which was understandable. We’re working on a shoestring and determined to make it work.” One of the organisers, former Christchurch City councillor Gail Jewell, said the competition would be a chance for people to have some fun. “It’s for the whole of Christchurch; a chance for people to forget their woes and see some magnificent artwork.” Tomorrow, Mr Gonzales’ team will contest the adult competition; corporate teams will also take part and on Sunday, events will be held for children and family groups.

Wide variety of acts in buskers festival THE buskers are back and ready to give Christchurch some much-needed belly laughs. The Stronger Christchurch World Buskers Festival is underway with events based in North Hagley Park and around the city. The festival, in its 19th year, features 60 acts from 12 countries performing until January 29. Founder and artistic director Jodi Wright said it was important to keep it going because Christchurch couldn’t afford to lose one more thing. “And certainly not something that’s fun and funny and provides so many people with a break from whatever’s been going on in their lives post-earthquake.”

Ms Wright said she hand-picked the performers and said nobody she invited was hesitant about coming to Christchurch, though she was clear they could expect aftershocks. “I chose not to invite those performers who were travelling with small children; it would just add an additional concern.” Husband and wife busking team Anne Goldmann and Jonathan Taylor of The Daredevil Chicken Club brought the idea for a new cabaret tent, Le Tigre Bleu, which they had toured around the United States. This will be their sixth buskers festival in Christchurch and they said they were keen to come back because the audience was so much fun to perform for. “It’s a bit of a coming home and of course

this year it’s a bit shocking to come back and all our favourite restaurants are gone, but it must be so much more shocking for the locals,” Mr Taylor said. He liked to perform for audiences who needed a good laugh and wasn’t worried by the earthquakes as they had both experienced them growing up in California. Dan Huling 34, known as Devil Dan, is back in Christchurch for the first time since performing in the festival seven years ago and experienced his first earthquake last week. He was hoping to give the audiences “deep belly laughs and a chance to kind of let go of all the stress for a little while. Full festival information can be found at www.worldbuskersfestival.com

FRIDAY JANUARY 20 2012

From the editor

Go to Brighton beach this weekend Oh no. Not again! IF ever an event deserved strong support from the public then this weekend’s first Christchurch sandcastle building competition at New Brighton beach is one. East-side Christchurch has been pummelled, not to a pulp, but to the point of having endured enough with quakes, liquefaction, and all the rest of it. So any piece of initiative and light in that side of the city needs to be grabbed and encouraged. The Pegasus Bay Charitable Trust has done a tremendous job getting this competition up and running. Trust chairman Roger Turner said raising money had been tough. Businesses were finding it hard to come on board as sponsors because of the harder economic times. But quakes, shattered streets, and a shoestring budget, as Mr Turner termed it, are not holding them back.

“My goal is to run a successful event for families to come together and have a fun day on the beach,” he said. “As a child growing up in Brighton, I loved coming to the beach.” They have brought in some sandcastle building experts from California to compete as well. It promises to be a great event for New Brighton and the city. Just hope the weather is OK. On Wednesday, I went over to Governors Bay to have a chat with Sir Miles Warren, who is considered the country’s foremost modern architect. Sir Miles’ Ohinetahi homestead, which has stunning views of Lyttelton harbour, was hammered hard in the September 4 earthquake and the top floor of the

building has since been demolished. The homestead has now been completely strengthened and damaged areas rebuilt; the acclaimed gardens looked as superb as ever. I was interested to hear what Sir Miles would have to say about the rebuild of Christchurch, in particular regarding the plans for the central city. I wasn’t disappointed. He expressed some concern with the ways things are going but this will be included in an article next week. “I’d like to see a positive constructive plan which is to happen – not aspirational plans, but what should take place now,” he said.

Application numbers a sign of confidence

‘Goliath’ to demolish NEARLY 2000 more students have applied to enrol at the University of Canterbury in BNZ building 2012 than had done so at the same time last year, vice-chancellor Dr Rod Carr says. The total number of applications is almost 14,000. “While applications from international students are about 90 per cent of the same time last year and first-year domestic students are 95 per cent of the same time last year, total applications to enrol are 15 per cent up on the same time last year,” Dr Carr said. It was a sign of confidence in the university and Christchurch that not only was the university open for business, but the messages of resilience, quality and opportunity had been heard by thousands of students, he said. Following aftershocks in December all UC facilities have been fully assessed by structural engineers and all facilities required for 2012 will be ready in time. More than 10,000sqm of student support, teaching, tutorial and library space has been remediated and access restrictions lifted for the first semester of 2012, which starts on February 20.

THE noise, trucks, and dust of the demolition crews are hard to ignore when your home is on the edge of the central city red zone. But for resident Mark McEntyre, getting involved in his community has helped keep his spirits up and provided a focus. The 51-year-old, who currently works at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) as a programme manager in the design school, voluntarily chairs the Peterborough Village group, which was formed after the February 22 earthquake to represent the interests of those in the area bordered by Colombo, Salisbury, and Barbadoes streets and the Avon River.

He said the neighbourhood was unique because it was made up of half residential and half businesses. The group spent the second half of last year organising community meetings and presented a 38-page submission to the Christchurch City Council’s central city plan, which has been handed over to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera). In the early stages following the disaster, Mr McEntyre was unable to live in his home of 14 years because of the danger posed by the St Luke's stone church over the fence. He, his partner Ria, and youngest son Ruairi, aged 10, chose to stay nearby and rented another apartment within the former

NEW Labour Party leader David Shearer has emphasised the need for a bipartisan approach to earthquake recovery, while promising homeowners he would hold the Government to account. Mr Shearer talked to residents and viewed property damage in New Brighton and Parklands on Tuesday during his first Christchurch visit since taking over the leadership from Phil Goff in December. His first stop was in New Brighton’s Wattle Drive where resident Kerry Simpson spoke on behalf of the owners of 17 houses in the street. Mr Simpson said he had been zoned green-blue despite being surrounded by red-zoned properties. Residents felt they were being ignored and couldn’t understand why they hadn’t been zoned red. COCA-Cola Amatil New Zealand (CCANZ) officially opened its new beverage bottle production line at the company’s manufacturing plant in Woolston on Wednesday. The $15 million investment for the world’s bestpractice technology enables the Coca-Cola company to design and self-manufacture its own PET plastic beverage bottles using fewer raw materials. The new PET plastic bottles will be the lightest-weight beverage bottles made in the country, and the “blow-

fill” bottle technology will deliver a reduction in the carbon footprint of every bottle of around 20 per cent. Group managing director Terry Davis said that blow-fill technology would provide a quantum lift in the company’s manufacturing capability in New Zealand. “Innovation like bottle self-manufacture delivers benefits, which are good for CCANZ, our customers, and the communities we operate in,” Mr Davis said.

DATA from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) on the housing market for December 2011 has shown that compared to December 2010, sales volume was up in all parts of the Canterbury region other than in South Canterbury. Rangiora, North, and Mid-Canterbury all reported substantial increases in sales volume, most likely due to earthquake-related relocations. Christchurch City has also seen an increase in sales volume with 14 per cent more sales in December compared to 12 months ago. Sales volume across the Canterbury/ Westland region eased in December compared to November, although far more modestly than in most other regions of New Zealand. There was a 6.6 per cent increase in the median price ($20,000) compared to December 2010, with most of the increase coming from MidCanterbury, Timaru, and West Coast. The increase in Christchurch City has been relatively modest in comparison. The national median house price eased by $12,500 to $355,000 (-3.4 per cent) in December compared to November and is up just $3000 (+0.9 per cent) compared with December 2010. The number of days to sell for Canterbury/ Westland improved by two days to 29 days in December, compared to 31 days in November, and improved by seven days compared to December 2010.

A HUGE Thankyou from the Canterbury Earthquake Children’s Trust about us... On Tuesday 22nd February at 12.51 pm, Christchurch and the lives of it’s people changed forever. Cracked and crumbled buildings can be replaced, Christchurch will be rebuilt, but the lives of some families have been torn apart. The loss of a parent will change young lives forever. On Wednesday 23rd February a 2 year old boy asked “When is daddy coming home from work?” Where do you find the words and strength to answer that daddy will not be coming home, but he will always be with you, and love you. The CEC Trust was launched in June and since this time our goal has been to raise awareness & profile of the charity which in turn would increase the funds needed to help these children. Canterbury Earthquake Children’s’ Trust is registered with the charities commission and the sole purpose of the Trust is to provide financial support for the purpose of assisting with education and financial hardship for the children that lost a parent in the earthquake. The Trust aims to make a positive difference in the lives of these young New Zealanders. No one will be able to make up for their loss but if we can make a difference even in a small way it may help. Through this awareness we have had some wonderful donations and support from the community, several businesses have given either their time or generous donations to the trust. To donate see www.cantykidstrust.co.nz Your donations are appreciated:

cycling nelson to bluff On Thursday 1st December two Auckland-based grandmothers Christina Ward & Cara Nowell departed Nelson on their first leg of a 1200km cycle to Bluff to raise money for the Canterbury Earthquake Children’s Trust. http://nelsontobluffride.wordpress.com/ Also a huge thank you to the team at Deloitte’s for their generous donation.

fight for christchurch The Crusaders kindly donated this Jersey which raised $3,100 on the evening. This was a special Jersey, as was from the last game played by the Crusaders in 2011. The team played in the West Coast colours which was the first time in 16 years they had played out of their Red & Black. This game was in memory of the Pike River disaster and CHCH Earthquake. Also a special thanks goes out to Emma Ferguson who also took part in the Fight for CHCH. Emma was touched by the work that was being done for these kids and wanted to contribute some of the funds she raised and has donated another $1000.

I recently took part in the charity boxing event, the Fight for Christchurch at CBS Canterbury Arena. As I made my way through the crowd at the Fight for Christchurch my heart began to swell with pride as I contemplated why I agreed to participate in the daunting occasion: I was taking part to raise money for the Canterbury Earthquake Children’s Trust; a charity set up to help support the children who lost parents in the 22 February earthquake. I was up against rather fit looking local government reporter, Sam Sachdeva who fought exceptionally well and won a welldeserved fight. Although given that no fight prior had lasted the full three rounds, I was desperate to go the distance and at a stretch, not hit the canvas throughout, which I – goodness only knows how – achieved. So if you see me around town sporting a few grazes and a modest shiner in the form of a black eye, you will note I sport it with pride as I was delighted to have raised $10,280 for the Canterbury Earthquake Children’s Trust. Although this will never make up for the loss these children have suffered, it’s a cause I felt privileged to be able to fight for. A total over $120,000 was raised for victims of the earthquake & local youth charities at this year’s Fight for CHCH. Each contender had a team work alongside them to fundraise including their charities, friends, family and work colleages. We are very excited as The Canterbury Earthquake Children’s Trust will be one of the charity’s involved in Fight for Chch 2012.

Aikido beginners THE advice we give to new students of aikido is Nike’s “just do it”. Every new student is naturally apprehensive about starting, but at Aikido Shinryukan Canterbury, we take care to ease beginners into training through our basics classes given by senior instructors. Aikido begins with that first step onto the mat. We quickly impart to new students an understanding of the fundamentals of aikido, so that they can take more steps and begin what we hope will be a lifelong study of the art. “We want students to develop technically and physically as quickly as possible,” notes senior instructor Andrew Williamson. “We can then introduce them to more advanced training. As the student’s knowledge improves, we also introduce them to international instructors and build on the total knowledge base held in our group.” Aikido Shinryukan Canterbury has dojos in Burnside and Linwood and provides classes for both adults and children. Beginners are very welcome. The group will hold an Open Day on Friday, 27 January from 6pm. For details contact, phone Andrew 383 4843. Website www. christchurchaikido.co.nz.

Edgeware Performing Arts Centre – a diverse spectrum of performing arts CLASSICAL ballet, jazz, contemporary dance, and a variety of other performing arts have all come together to form the Edgeware Performing Arts Centre. The newly refurbished studios are conveniently located at 12 Berwick St, Edgeware (near the corner of Cranford St). In joining their classical and jazz studios, directors Kathleen CurwenWalker of Christchurch Academy of Ballet and Sandra Gray of Sandra Gray Dance Centre say that the Performing Arts Centre now provides a diverse spectrum of dance, singing, drama, musical theatre, and piano tuition for all those looking to have a career in theatre or just wanting to learn for the love of it. Classes are available for “wee-bops to adults”. Kathleen and Sandra have a combined teaching career that spans 60 years of experience, with Sandy, a well-loved Christchurch jazz teacher, delighted to find a new “home” for her dancers, including her cabaret company “Chant de Dance”. Her new singing and drama classes are fun, inspiring, and encourage great confidence in children.

Kathleen, an international ballet dancer, teacher, and choreographer from Australia, shows her passion and brings the joy of ballet to her students through fun, disciplined, and creative classes that are carefully structured to nurture a young dancer’s developing body and artistry. Adult classes for those who danced in their youth and wished they never stopped have been very popular and fun. “So why not dust off your ballet shoes?” says Kathleen. Although the rest of the ballet school has a strict dress code, the adults can wear whatever they are comfortable in. Kathleen and Sandra are excited about their prospects for 2012, with performances and workshops being planned to allow their dancers to showcase those new skills developed at the studios. School holiday workshops and enrolments for these fast-filling classes, which commence in February 2012, are now open.

Hurray for hydrangeas

T

hese days, it’s hard to find something you can totally rely on. With constant change almost our daily friend, finding something that thrives on neglect yet s ll rewards you with a bounty of flowers is truly a gi from Rachel Vogan Mother Nature. Hydrangeas The Happy Gardener fit this bill and are pu ng on a glorious show at the moment. In Mona Vale and botanical gardens, hydrangeas are in full bloom, so pop in and see which ones appeal to you the most. Hydrangeas are hardy campaigners that add colour, texture, and vibrancy to the garden. The flowers are perfect for picking and drying and are widely used in bouquets, sand saucers, or in a vase. As the flowers age, the colour fades to reveal wonderful an que shades of lime, rose, and copper. It's simply beau ful. These plants are remarkably durable and can cope with intense heat and cold. They require li le care except for some water in summer. Being deciduous, they literally are an easy-care plant for the me-

poor gardener. Over the year, numerous new hybrids and colours have been bred. A number of varie es are available from the popular big flowered ‘Moptops’ to the frilly ‘Lacecaps’. Climbing hydrangeas are ideal for covering large areas on a fence, garage, or wall. The good old mop top varie es certainly provide the most bang for your buck, with dozen of new varie es appearing all the me. Lace-cap types are widely sought a er, too, as their unique petal arrangement almost looks like the lace edging on a garment. A common issue with hydrangeas is that the colours can change depending on soil fer lity. Many gardeners have been mys fied by this as they may purchase a pink hydrangea flower from the garden centre and find a year later that the flowers have changed to a shade of mauve. Change colour by adding either lime to enhance red and pink flowers or aluminium sulphate for blue. Changes should appear within a few weeks. Prune back to reduce the plant by at least half in autumn, cu ng to just above a pair of leaves. Don’t leave it un l a er the winter, as it will limit flowering for next season. Ideal for large pots and containers too. Enjoy!

Shakespeare comedy sure to delight

Friends and allies: Celia, left, is played by Nikki Bleyendaal and Rosalind is played by Harriet Prebble.

THIS year’s Summer Shakespeare Festival presented by Top Dog

Theatre features another favourite comedy, As You Like It. Mona Vale is the setting for this entertaining tale of romance, deceit, cruelty, and love, which takes place mainly within the forest of Arden. Shakespeare’s story-telling skill is revealed with several tales being told simultaneously with interconnected, layered plots and sub-plots. Portraying Rosalind,

one of Shakespeare’s most challenging and delightful female roles, is Harriet Prebble. Celia, her close friend and ally, is played by Nikki Bleyendaal. Duke Frederick banishes his older brother to the forest as he takes over his kingdom. Soon after, Celia and Rosalind are also banished and they too flee to the forest. But before they go, Rosalind meets Orlando and they fall desperately in love. His older

brother, Oliver, cruelly treats Orlando, who flees to the forest! Rosalind, originally disguised as a man for safety reasons, keeps her disguise as she teases Orlando into revealing his love for Rosalind. Cruel, but that’s girl power for you! Touchstone, the jester, falls in lust with Audrey and makes a move to marry her. Silvius is desperately in love with Phoebe. Only, Phoebe is in love with Rosalind, as she is dressed as a man. That’s a worry. But hey, it’s Shakespeare. It’ll all come out in the wash, or rather, final scene. The Summer Shakespeare Festival opens on Friday, February 10 and closes on Saturday, February 18. Performances run from 6pm to 8.10pm every night. Toilets and refreshments are available on site. The audience can sit on a picnic blanket at the front or on low/high chairs. It is advisable to bring warm clothing. Tickets are $12 and are available at the gate or from the Court Theatre box office, phone 963 0870.

Top NZ acts to feature at Mud House HEADLINE act Gin Wigmore, along with The Mutton Birds and newcomer Avalanche City, will perform at the Mud House Winery next month for the Classic Hits Winery Tour 2012. Wigmore’s multi-platinum debut album Holy Smoke scooped four Tui Awards at last year’s NZ Music Awards and she had significant airplay success with I Do, Oh My, Under My Skin, and Black Sheep. She returned recently from the United States where she recorded her second album, Gravel & Wine. The Mutton Birds are celebrating two milestones as this year marks 20 years since the release of their selftitled debut album and 10 years since their last show. With timeless Kiwi anthems such as Anchor Me, Don McGlashan, Ross Burge, David Long, and Alan Gregg are reuniting just for the tour. About joining the tour, Wigmore said: “I grew up as a big fan of Don and The Mutton Birds, so I’m excited to be on

tour with them. And Avalanche City is so hot right now. It’s a great bill. We’re on the road for a month in summer and I can’t wait to play in some of New Zealand’s most spectacular outdoor settings and drink a few glasses of wine on this legendary tour.” Co-promoter Brent Eccles said the tour promised to be one of the best yet. “Summer just wouldn't be summer without the Winery Tour and we look forward to welcoming back all who love coming to this tour every year. This year we have another strong New Zealand line-up reminding us all of the depth of New Zealand talent, long may it be!” The concert is on Saturday, February 18. Gates open at 5pm. Tickets can be purchased via www.winerytour.co.nz and Ticketmaster. One child under the age of 12 will be given free admittance when accompanied by one adult ticket holder.

Kiwi western to screen in Sumner NEW Zealand’s modern-day western, Netherwood, will screen at the Hollywood theatre in Sumner on February 21 as part of its nationwide release. Written by John Argall and directed by Cristobal Araus Lobos, the film was funded by a group of North Canterbury locals and shot exclusively in North Canterbury. Many of the cast and crew

either live in Canterbury or grew up here. Netherwood (R16) premiered in Christchurch as part of the NZ International Film Festival to two sellout crowds and was labelled “pick of the fest” by festival organisers. Producer/ actor Owen Black has described it as “good old-fashioned storytelling at its finest”.

New contender: Can the new Barina compete in the Mini Hatch market?

WHILE the new Barina is a major step forward in Holden’s small car design, it is worth pointing out that the model it replaces was not exactly a “mover and shaker” in our Mini Hatch market. It is fair to say that this latest Barina hardly has a hard act to follow. However, it does have some big names to chase down if it is going to make any sort of impact in a Mini Hatch market currently bristling with strong contenders such as the Suzuki Swift, Ford Fiesta, and VW Polo. The Barina has had, at best, a chequered career spanning over 25 years, starting out as a clone of the original Suzuki Swift launched in 1985. In the mid-1990s, the decision was made to sell the Barina as a rebadged version of European-sourced Opel Corsa. Going Euro did little to raise the car’s profile or sales performance, although Holden plugged away with the European connection until 2005. By this stage, it made more economic sense to supply the Barina from Holden’s parent company, General Motors’ Korean division. This latest version of the Barina launched in the final quarter of 2011 will be sold in over 60 countries as the Chevrolet Aveo and Sonic. Like the Barinas that have gone before it, this one also represents good value for money and is loaded with a surprising amount of kit and safety equipment for its modest asking price. Visual-wise, the new generation Barina is more appealing than the previous model with its clean fluid lines that are clearly geared for the global market although I am not sure about the concealed rear door handles. While they provide a point-ofdifference over the competition, I did not

find them particularly functional. These types of door handles date back to the 1990s and a bit like pop-up head lights that were also a hit at that time, they are best left as a 1990s automotive fad. The wheels on the new Barina are shunted out to all four corners, a move that helps give the car a more squat and aggressive on-road stance, something that is further reinforced by tenspoke 16” alloy wheels and an integrated, body-coloured rear spoiler. There has been a major refresh of the cabin architecture. The instrument cluster features a large, round analogue tachometer set within an asymmetrical LCD readout alongside an easy-to-read digital speedometer. Unique pockets have been created on either side of the centre stack and upper instrument panel for smaller items like wallets and personal devices. The bi-level glove box has two concealed storage areas complete with USB and auxiliary outlets with a recessed channel to accommodate an MP3 player cable. Just one well-appointed five-door hatch variant is offered, with the five-speed manual retailing for $22,995. The optional six-speed automatic, borrowed from the larger Holden Cruze, adds another $2000 to the asking price. Recently, I have driven the Barina in automatic and manual forms and it became quickly apparent that they will attract buyers by offering real value for money and lots of load and passenger space, not because they are strong on refinement or driving dynamics. A nippy 85kW 1.6-litre engine is one of the lustier offerings in the Mini Hatch segment and the product of a major upgrade of the motor used in the previous model.

This engine has done time in a variety of Holden and General Motors models around the automotive globe over the last 20 years and must be in line for a long service award. With so many years on the clock, its days are numbered and I would not be surprised to see it replaced with a version of the technically superior 1.4 turbo petrol used in the Holden Cruze. Until then, most buyers will be happy enough with what is a rather harsh, but hardworking engine that is hard to fault for endeavour and honesty. It is lively in the low- to mid-rev range, but above 4500rpm it starts to lose its composure. Plenty of low speed torque means the motor is well suited to the efficient six-speed automatic. It does such a convincing job that the smart money is on this transmission to easily outsell the crunchy shifting five-speed manual. Longer and wider than before, this Barina offers the driver and passengers more space than they perhaps have a right to expect in a car of this size. A 60/40 split rear seats folds flat to provide a roomy and flexible 290-litre cargo cavity with the rear seats in use and 653 litres when they are not. Holden’s engineering team have modified the suspension, so it is more in tune with our road conditions and more demanding drivers. Like most cars of this size with their shorter wheel bases and reduced suspension travel, ride comfort is a bit patchy. Under 70km/h over road surfaces that are not marble bench top smooth, suspension noise is never to far away. Both test cars nipped through the corners confidently, but were, at times, rather ponderous to react to unexpected changes in the road surface at higher speeds.
