“It is making people go out of town to find entertainment. I think it will come back to the city in time. Canterbury is resilient and the party scene will return eventually.”

“There are not a lot of places to go now. Just bars and pubs rather than clubs.”

“There are a lot more house parties, which can get out of hand as they are not controlled like bars and clubs. There is not a lot of class left in the places you can go now.”

“Not that good. There are really only two clubs left now.”

“The bars are not close enough together to walk to anymore. It is a taxi ride between them, which costs. We need an area like the Strip again, or the Viaduct. On the Avon would be good.”

‘Poor quality piecemeal development possible’ Continued from page 1 “IT’S entirely in the hands of engineers.” Mr van der Lingen said not a single Christchurch architect had been asked to

be involved and people like Sir Miles, who worked all their lives in Christchurch and were responsible for the design of the major fabric of the city, had been sidelined

(issue 54)

almost as an irrelevance. Sir Miles said “a feeling of despondency” prevailed among the city’s architects that they had not been actively engaged. “Architects are involved from Denmark; Copenhagen is a beautiful city but it ‘aint Christchurch.” The rebuild draft plan was prepared with the assistance of Danish architecture firm Gehl Architects Three months ago Property Council New Zealand chief executive Connal Townsend told city councillors that Gehl appeared “to be trying to replicate Copenhagen in Christchurch”. The council’s strategy and planning general manager Mike Theleen said a wide range of professionals took part in the development of the Central City Plan, from engineers

and urban designers to the architectural community and planners. “The outcome of the central city plan reflected the need to balance a wide range of professional and community views, and inevitably not all ideas were fully adopted. The minister has provided a further opportunity

for groups and individuals to submit on the final draft adopted by the council and the architects may have chosen to do so.” Seeking wide community involvement in rebuild proposals was also fine, Sir Miles said, but the most successful cities overseas, especially in Europe, had an overall hand placed on a wide section of them “in contradiction to our democratic process”. He believed the rebuild plan was also too much about what could not be done. “You cannot achieve a new

city of today simply by regulations on what you can’t do. The series of ‘Thou shalt nots.’ The initial city (rebuild) plan includes all sorts of angles for roofs, windowwall proportions height restrictions – things you shall not do, no constructive, positive concepts. “What it comes back to is this – is there an authority whether the Christchurch City Council or any other who’ll take over whole city blocks and demonstrate what can be done and do it? “Are any people in the city council prepared to undertake such a vision? At the moment it (the rebuild plan) is just words or two-dimensional. It’s architects, not town planners, who transform a plan into three-dimensional form. “We’ve had pretty pictures but they have to be more to specific projects and design. It should come from the council and clearly the council doesn’t see that as its role. To be fair no city council has taken up that overall role. Cera (the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority) is for demolition.” Sir Miles Warren is considered the country’s foremost modern architect.

Architects’ submission IN its submission to the central city rebuild plan the Canterbury Institute of Architects made a number of proposals of whole city blocks. One of these included an inner city housing and retail development of land owned by the Christchurch City Council including the Tuam Street carpark and the former Para Rubber site nearly a whole city block. There were to be blocks of two or three storey apartments similar to town houses above with ground-floor retail shops built along the street frontages. The shops would be set back three

metres behind colonnades thus widening the streets by six metres and providing space for avenues of trees unencumbered by projecting verandahs. The apartments would look over treelined streets on one side and into quiet leafy squares within the city blocks. Christchurch did not have the outward views of Auckland and Wellington but it grows trees better than any city.

THE Returned and Services Association’s Christchurch president is disappointed nothing has been put in place to protect the quake-damaged Bridge of Remembrance despite being told in October work on temporary bracing would begin. The Christchurch City Council said on October 3 work would begin to brace the bridge in preparation for repairs, which were likely to cost millions of dollars. However, no bracing has yet been put in place. “At that time we hoped work would start but design inputs have changed slightly and we’ve got some other investigations to do so we’ll be doing that beginning the 30th of January,” the Christchurch City Council’s maintenance operations manager Malcolm Park said. Mr Park said any bracing touching the bridge could damage its “heritage fabric” and

they wanted to avoid that. Christchurch RSA president Russell Barron said workers drilled into the archway in midNovember to see how it was constructed and wondered why it had taken so long to design a support. “If we don’t do something another bloody earthquake’s going to come along and bring it all down in a ton of bloody bricks and what’s that going to do to the fabric of the bridge?” He thought the damage had become worse since the December shakes. “I believe a kid with a Lego set could do it quicker than what this mob can.” Mr Barron said if supports were installed and the bridge could reopen he didn’t mind if full repairs took longer. Mr Park said the council had done 28 weeks of investigations and still had more to do. “We’re coming up with the best solution

for the repair of the triumphal arch” He said one option was to build a steel structure around the arch which didn’t touch it. Mr Park said the bridge was a treasured icon of the city and the council was committed to rebuilding it. “We’ve got nothing to hide, we’re working hard on it and we’re going to rebuild this asset.” Historic Places Trust heritage advisor Dave Margetts said the trust was being guided by the professional expert engineering advice sought by the council as to how and when stabilisation work should be done. Mr Barron said he had been invited to a meeting with the council this week. The Bridge of Remembrance was opened on Armistice Day, November 11, 1924, and is a tribute to servicemen and women from the two world wars and subsequent conflicts.

THE fully choreographed equestrian arena spectacular El Caballo Blanco: The Dance of the White Stallions will be performed at CBS Canterbury Arena on Saturday as part of a New Zealand tour. The horses arrived yesterday. El Caballo Blanco was scheduled to perform in Christchurch in early March 2011 but the show had to be cancelled due to the February earthquake. Creator and riding master Rene Gasser said he was delighted to be able to bring the show back to the city.

A CELEBRATION of New Zealand’s rapidly growing brewing industry will be held at Hagley Park on February 25. The Great Kiwi Beer Festival will give festivalgoers the opportunity to sample a wide range of innovative beers and international foods. The festival is a family-friendly event and children under 12 are free with an accompanying adult. Tickets are $29.50. Visit www.greatkiwibeerfestival.co.nz for more information.

AN international team, which includes University of Canterbury astronomers Dr Michael Albrow and Dr Karen Pollard, has recently released findings concerning our galaxy. Published in the international journal Nature, the team’s research shows that, on average, every star in the Milky Way has at least one companion planet. The research suggests the existence of planets orbiting stars in our galaxy is the rule, rather than the exception.

Going potty for Ellerslie

What an embarrassment AND so the Council Rocky Horror Show flounders on. On Friday, the powers that be decided that Christchurch City Council chief executive Tony Marryatt would henceforth depart from behind his desk and assume more of a smiley PR role. That was fine, but the council also announced a review costing $80,000 into its communications processes. Like the unfortunate timing and bumbled handling over Mr Marryatt’s $70,000 pay rise, which simply opened him up for renewed attack from enemies old and new, the $80,000 price tag for a communications review provided yet more anti-Marryatt ammunition. And again, the whole thing came as a surprise to most of the council. Enter first-term councillor, Tim Carter. Give Mr Marryatt the

boot, says Cr Carter, although he didn’t use these precise words. Ratepayers and council staff deserve better leadership, he says, too many backroom decisions are being made. Then mayor Bob Parker responded that Cr Carter was trampling over the democratic process, which saw Mr Marryatt reappointed last year and which gave him a pat on the back at the end of the year for supposedly a job well done and a nice $70,000 pay rise to go with it. Then Cr Sue Wells joined in, saying that the elected members of the council could not do their jobs properly and should be replaced by a Governmentappointed commission. What an indictment of our

council and what an embarrassment for this city. Christchurch desperately needs a united body working to get this quake-ravaged city back on track and this has blown apart for a variety of reasons. It seems that at the core of the problems is an ongoing opposition to the ParkerMarryatt way of doing business among some councillors and in the wider community even if, democratically speaking, they had the mandate. We reelected Mr Parker as mayor, the councillors we elected reappointed Mr Marryatt late last year, and these same councillors gave him a pay rise. What a mess. Outside of Christchurch, we must look like a banana republic incapable of handling our own affairs.

Book provides images of pre-quake city

Screening for products with synthetic cannabis

A COLLECTION of paintings by 19 Canterbury artists depicting pre-quake Christchurch will be released on February 22 to mark the anniversary of the earthquake. Art consultant and author Denis Robinson compiled Christchurch: An artists’ tribute as a memorial to the garden city. Many of the artists in the book returned to old sketchbooks to discover drawings still waiting to be painted, sourcing new works especially for inclusion in this new book, to sit alongside their earlier completed works of the city. The artworks cover as much of the city as possible and describe the artists’ relationship to Christchurch.

CANTERBURY Health Laboratories (CHL) has become the first laboratory in New Zealand able to screen for synthetic cannabis products such as “Kronic” at its toxicology laboratory. CHL quality and business development manager Kevin Taylor said laboratory staff had developed a method to detect synthetic cannabinoids in urine last year . The next step in being able to do the testing was to gain accreditation, which was issued last week. “Companies using CHL’s workplace drug testing service will now be able to test for these substances and depending on their individual health and safety policy, be able to use this information accordingly.” Last August, the Government banned Kronic, which had been marketed as ‘legal weed’ after emergency departments around the country reported they were treating increasing numbers of people with adverse side effects as a result of smoking the product.

GREEN fingers were kept busy last week as work began to prepare 1000 hanging baskets and 1000 large planter pots for the Ellerslie International Flower Show. The flowers were being grown and potted at nurseries from Kumeu to Invercargill in preparation for the flower show, which will take place at North Hagley Park from March 7 to 11. Major show sponsor Egmont Seed Company’s general manager John McCullough visited Christchurch on Thursday to check on the progress of the arrangements, with more than 15,000 flowers being grown at Zealandia nurseries in Belfast. Mr McCullough wanted more flowers and more colour in the show. The baskets and planters, containing

more than 50,000 flowers in total, would be scattered throughout the show grounds. He said they would be labelled so that keen gardeners could identify new varieties. Mr McCullough said the plantings were made of a combination of seed samples, new releases, and unusual seeds donated from the company’s suppliers worldwide. He said an interesting flower to look out for was ‘fusible blueberry lime jam seed’, a combination of purple and lime green petunias from Chicago in the United States. “Ellerslie should be about fun and creative gardening and that is exactly what we are trying to achieve with the floral displays this year.”

Colour explosion: About 50,000 flowers will be used to decorate the festival grounds.

Proposal to establish 50m pool in city Chris Tobin

A GROUP of swimming enthusiasts is so keen to have a temporary 50-metre indoor pool in the city that they decided to take the matter into their own hands. Spokesman Paul Lloyd said that the loss of the QE2 stadium pool due to earthquake damage had impacted hard on the swimming community and many people wanted a new 50m pool established as quickly as possible. As a result, with the support of Swimming New Zealand and Swimming Canterbury, a group of business people have come up with a proposal for a 50m pool that, if successful, could see such a facility up and running in eight

seven of them would be used at the London Olympic Games this year. He said such a pool could be used for eight years in the city, giving sufficient time for a more permanent facility to be built. He has already visited a supplier in Indianapolis regarding this project. “We’re flexible as to the location. Addington is an option, but there are some concerns from the council as it has other pools in that part of the city. Christchurch City Council recreation and sports manager John Filsell said that building a temporary pool in the city was not a priority of the council at this point.

months’ time. Mr Lloyd said major competitions were bypassing the city because of the absence of a 50m pool and elite athletes were leaving Christchurch. Schools. A variety of sports, and other groups were also missing out. “The cost is $9 million, but we believe that through various charitable trusts, we could get that down to $2 million. We have $2m to $3m from offers in kind from designers and contractors and that could bring it to below $5m. “The key is that the council has to own it because of the ongoing cost. Modern pools are built of stainless steel and Mr Lloyd said

“Our priority has been around swimmer education and the recovery of facilities. I haven’t seen the proposal for a stand-alone 50m pool and I can’t comment on what the council would say. “The council has asked for its aquatic facilities plan to be updated, so that it can make a decision on the future network of facilities over the city on an informed basis rather than on an ad hoc area by area basis.

Sumner man gets message through Tom Doudney

WHEN Terry O’Leary was given the title ‘Sumner liaison’ after volunteering to help with communications at the local fire station in the wake of the February 22 earthquake, he didn’t know what it meant. Eventually, however, he decided it meant helping agencies such as the police, fire service, and various social services communicate with each other and the public and the rest is history. Since then, the Sumner resident and relief teacher has been a key organiser and communicator in the community’s earthquake response and recovery efforts. While manning the phones at the Sumner Fire Station, he managed to acquire a supply of tents to put up a temporary tent school on the playing field of Sumner School while its buildings were offlimits. Also during this time, he started a Sumner newsletter and played a crucial role in providing residents with information through the newly formed Sumner Community Group’s earthquake response meetings. After the formation of the Canterbury Community Earthquake Response Network, Mr O’Leary became a board member and went on to organise a successful and still ongoing programme of street-level meetings for Port Hills residents to meet and get answers from geotechnical experts, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority

officials, and local politicians. When Mainland Press caught up with Mr O’Leary, he was preparing for a four-day tramp with wife Sarah and children Jack, 13, and Mary, 9. It would be the longest time he had been without his cell phone since February 22. “I’m starting to feel a bit of a twitch just thinking about it, but I know it’s time for a break. My family have been incredibly supportive in the background. They need a break and so do I. However, with residents still seeking certainty over the future of their land and homes, he was aware there would be plenty for

Promoters of river park extend petition deadline Christine de Felice

THE group wanting to see red zone land along the Avon turned into a river park hopes to add more impetus to its petition by extending the deadline to March 31. The original close-off date was January 15. The Avon-Otakaro Network (AvON) had gathered almost 10,500 signatures since the petition was started some 10 weeks ago and believed it could triple that number over the next two months or so, spokesman Evan Smith said. The vision of the network members, many of whom were red zone residents, was to see the 350 hectares of red-zoned land adjacent to the Avon River transformed into a recreational and ecological reserve, Mr Red zone restoration: Evan Smith said. Smith of the Avon-Otakaro Network “This area is twice the size of Hagley Park displays the brochure detailing the and with 5000 households moving out and group’s vision. the area becoming an eyesore, it’s important that it’s turned into something positive for people living in the surrounding areas and for the whole city.” Mr Smith said the vision had the backing of more than 50 organisations and Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker had publicly expressed the council’s support. The petition had received overwhelming support when it was circulated at recent public events and in the Re:Start Mall on Boxing Day. However, the initiative was limited by the number of volunteers’ available to collect the signatures, Mr Smith said. The network planned to collect signatures at the Buskers Festival, at Classical Sparks on February 5, and at the Chinese Lantern Festival on February 11 and hoped more volunteers to collect them could be recruited. Supporters of the vision keen to volunteer to collect signatures at any of these events or elsewhere were asked to register on the AvON website, www. avonotakaronetwork.co.nz. When the petition closes, AvON will present it to Parliament. The network believed there was a “high likelihood” of the project going ahead, Mr Smith said.

New Marian College site to have ‘homely’ feel Tom Doudney

STAFF and students of Marian College are focusing on making their new site more than just another temporary location as the new school year draws near. The Catholic girls’ school will be based on the former Xavier College site on Barbadoes Street, adjacent to Catholic Cathedral College, for the next two to four years while assessments on the viability of their traditional North Parade grounds are completed. Damage to that site in the February 22 earthquake led to them sharing St Bede’s College facilities for most of last year. Marian College principal Anna Heffernan said there was a big emphasis on making sure the students would feel at home at the new site. “We’re trying, in setting up the school year, for the girls to have as many things as possible familiar to

them as they were at North Parade in terms of how the day runs and how things are done.” The colour scheme and building names from their North Parade grounds would be replicated on the new site while the traditional planter boxes with flowers representing the colours of each college house were already on site. Five relocatable classrooms had been brought in and four more were being built to complement the site’s permanent buildings. Head girl Tayla Sumner said the school’s community spirit had shone through over the last year and had shown that Marian College wasn’t just about the buildings. “I think it has brought out the best and made us appreciate what we have.” Due to moving and renovating, the school will start a week later than usual on February 7.

Earthquake awards nominations close

Rental shortage is favouring landlords

CHRISTCHURCH City Council has received 170 nominations for the Christchurch Earthquake Awards. The awards were established late last year to recognise people who undertook acts of kindness, service, and heroism during the earthquakes of September 2010 and February 2011. This was a change to the annual Christchurch Civic Awards. The nominations were just the tip of the iceberg in recognising those in our community who were someone’s hero during the earthquakes of September 2010 and February 2011, Mayor Bob Parker said. The awards will be presented at a special ceremony at North Hagley Park on February 22.

RENTAL demand from tenants has increased across New Zealand and Christchurch landlords, in particular, are reaping the benefits. Nationwide demand was up 13 per cent in the December quarter year-on-year, with the Christchurch market’s demand helping drive the growth, head of an online listing service Brendon Skipper said. Some Christchurch landlords had experienced “extraordinarily high” levels of enquiry, he said. With demand outstripping supply, average rents in Christchurch had risen by 10 per cent, well ahead of the national average of three per cent, but still “on par” with central Auckland’s nine per cent rise, Mr Skipper said.

Many Cantabrians have to vacate or demolish their properties as a result of the earthquakes. Below are some tips on how you can make sure your wheelie bins are looked after and to avoid replacement costs as you make decisions about where to live.

Executive Director of the Festival Jo Blair says, “We know people have been hanging out for a laugh and the performers are just as eager to get Christchurch smiling again.’’

From 1 March 2012, changes to the Building Act mean that residential building work affecting structure or weathertightness is now ‘restricted’ and can only be done and/or supervised by licensed building practitioners (LBPs).

Christchurch City Council will hold public commemorative events to mark the first anniversary of the 22 February 2011 earthquake.

Radiology capacity doubled THE Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) has purchased Canterbury Medical Imaging’s (CMI) assets, including an MRI machine and CT scanner. The board’s chief executive, David Meates, said having this additional equipment would enable the CDHB to meet a higher demand for radiology services and improve access for Canterbury people. “We are also less reliant on external providers for radiology services, reducing our outsourcing costs and freeing up healthcare dollars.” The facility, to be renamed Canterbury Community Radiology, will provide a wide range of radiology services for Canterburians as part of a more integrated system. Staff currently employed by CMI have been offered the opportunity to transfer to CDHB and continue to work at the current location. CMI is a private company owned by international company Sonic Healthcare. It has been delivering mostly X-ray services from Merivale for 13 years.

Achievements as Community Board Chairperson: • Re-allocating QE11 Gym to Parklands Community Centre • Upgrade of Rawhiti Athletics Facility • Establishing 4 new Residents Associations • Intensive support and funding allocations for Residents Associations in red zoned suburbs • Recognitions Awards – 3 for civil defence support during September and February earthquakes. I offer these important skills: Local knowledge: I know you value QE11. We must retain this vital community Asset. I raised my family here and I know this ward and its constantly changing dynamics the earthquakes have caused. There is a lack of community centres in our suburbs. This needs to be addressed urgently. Experience: Community involvement over 25 years in Civil Defence, Residents Groups, Outdoor Recreation groups. Wetlands and reserves advocacy. Funding and Trust Management. Strategic Planning and Leadership: Formal training and practical experience (Dip NVP) Accredited NZ Business Mentor and leadership experience. Support: 1• Existing and new business ventures 2• A ward-wide recovery plan 3• To recover lost equity in our homes

Recreating history in Woodham Road THE Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) is in the last stages of rebuilding one of the city’s most critical earthquake-damaged wastewater pipelines. Located along Woodham Road, the damaged 1.5metre square box conduit concrete pipe is being replaced by a 1.8-metre diameter lightweight, flexible polyethylene (plastic) pipe, which will be better able to withstand any future seismic activity. The new pipe was manufactured locally and is one of the largest-diameter pipes of this type to be used for a gravity wastewater line in New Zealand. Contractor MacDow Fletcher and local subcontractor March Construction team members came across a photo of the men who installed the original concrete trunk sewer in the 1950s and decided to recreate the photo. The photos are a tribute

to the past and a record for the future, SCIRT alliance manager Duncan Gibb said. “SCIRT’s vision is creating resilient infrastructure that gives people security and confidence in the future of Christchurch. The materials have changed, but the fundamental construction principals are unchanged. The past and present are striving for the best for Christchurch.” The excavation area for the work is around six metres deep by six metres wide and 130 metres long. The size of the trench and proximity to homes has been challenging for residents. The construction team has worked closely with residents to minimise the impact of the work and has held meetings with residents to discuss any concerns and provide regular updates. The project is expected to finish around March.

Motorists urged to take care as classes begin again NEXT Monday marks the start of the school year, and the Motor Trade Association (MTA) is urging motorists to be extra vigilant with their driving around schools and childcare facilities, particularly around peak school pick-up and drop-off times. Statistics show that the peak times for

injury accidents involving pedestrians coincide with the times 8am to 9am and 3pm to 4pm. The start of the school year is also the start of a busy time for many parents, MTA spokesperson, Ana Zandi said. “All drivers, not just parents, need to be

New MP Woods follows in Anderton’s footsteps Tom Doudney

NEW Wigram MP Megan Woods’ political career has been so entwined with her retiring predecessor, Jim Anderton, that it seems almost too neat that she is taking over from him now. Ms Woods, a former SpreydonHeathcote Community Board member, said her start in politics was delivering campaign pamphlets for Mr Anderton as a university student. She had also grown up with him as her local MP and having him door knocking and holding street corner meetings with her during the 2011 campaign had felt “a bit surreal”. “I have quite a vivid memory as a 10-year-old looking out the lounge window of the place where my parents still live in Spreydon and seeing Jim do street corner meetings. I remember

totally aware of what’s happening around school zones, school buses, and daycare centres. Safety has to be the first priority, even though this usually takes place when people typically have a lot on their minds. The rush to beat traffic and make appointments or start times can lead to drivers concentrating on

their own needs at the expense of children, students, or other road users. “We would urge those dropping children off at school or daycare to be especially careful as they start the year. Being safer around schools and daycares should be a priority, all year round,” Ms Zandi said.

the day he was out with me doing them and thinking, ‘this is a bit odd’.” Ms Woods said it was a huge honour to have Mr Anderton’s endorsement and she hoped to continue his legacy of standing up and fighting for local people. Although it had been a “leap off the cliff” leaving her job as business manager at Plant and Food Research in May, she had no regrets and is looking forward to being an MP. She is Labour’s spokesperson on youth affairs and associate spokesperson with leader David Shearer on science and innovation. She is still seeking a suitable office in an electorate which has experienced an increased demand on office space as a result of the earthquakes.

Well, it’s a new year and there’s a lot to look forward to for events in the next couple of months. First up, we have World Wetlands Day which is celebrated internationally on the 2nd of February each year. Locally, we have had a lot of activity at Charlesworth Wetland Reserve, both with the environmental challenges of the past 16 months and with the hard work of the CCC Park Rangers and volunteers to remediate this. This is an ideal opportunity to come along and hear firsthand what it takes to continue restoring the ecological values of this small but significant wetland. There’s also a rich social history with some fascinating stories about the characters of Charlesworth. On Friday 9th of March, we once again celebrate the annual Farewell to the Godwits (Kuaka) from Southshore Spit Reserve where these iconic birds have been resting up and feeding in preparation for their epic 11,000kms plus return journey to Alaska. This is a fun event for all ages and everyone is welcome. Looking forward to March/April, the Trust will be launching an exciting new publication of a Field Guide for the Avon-Heathcote Estuary/Ihutai. Make sure that you check our website or follow us on Facebook or Twitter to be up to date when we announce the launch details! We look forward to seeing many of you at these events.

Friday 9 March Farewell to the Godwits [Kuaka] Come and farewell Christchurch’s iconic and muchloved visitors, the Bar-tailed Godwits, as they start their long trip back to Alaska. The champion long-distance flying birds are seen off towards the end of summer with a brief and informative ceremony at the Southshore Spit. The Godwit makes the longest non-stop flight known for any bird and also the longest journey without pausing to feed by any animal – more than 11,000km along a route from Alaska to Christchurch. After resting up and filling out under the protection of parks rangers and bird lovers in Christchurch, the birds are ready to return to their Alaskan breeding grounds Cost: Who: When: Where:

MEMBERS of a Japanese delegation responsible for a $17,000 donation for Christchurch’s earthquake recovery were moved to tears during a tour of the city’s worst-hit areas last weekend. The Nippon Volunteer Network Active in Disaster (NVNAD), a non-profit organisation based in the Japanese city of Nishinomiya, selected the Rebuild Christchurch Foundation to donate to because they believed it was the support agency working most effectively for local people. The NVNAD delegation, which came to Christchurch to present the money, was hosted by Rebuild Christchurch. Christchurch city councillor Glen Livingstone, Christchurch Central MP Nikki Wagner, and Christchurch East MP Lianne Dalziel also helped show the visitors around. Rebuild Christchurch founder Deon Swiggs said the visit had gone well, but the Japanese had been shocked by some of the devastation, especially at the site of the CTV building where 28 Japanese nationals had died. “That was quite hard for them. They had a few tears in their eyes and it was quite a sombre mood.” He said the donation was a lovely gesture. “Rebuild Christchurch is totally focused on longterm support and donations like this will help us to help others on this long and difficult road back to normality.”

NVNAD director Hironobu Teramoto said that it was hoped the money would be used to make suffering people happier. “After the March 11 disaster in Japan, we were very grateful to have huge support from all over the world. Please accept our deep sympathies for your loss from the quake on February 22.”

Ray decided to use his artistic ability to do something positive and cheer people up following the earthquakes. “We lost our house in the earthquake and so many people seemed depressed, so I decided to bring some happiness into people’s lives through art and also raise money for the rebuild.” During his art sale, the six paintings he had produced sold out within 10 minutes. He ended up creating 42 paintings for students and teachers. Ray plans to continue studying art this year at Christ’s College.

Our new extension is nearing completion and the excitement is building as we prepare for our grand opening! Our redevelopment works on the new extension are gathering speed as we prepare for our first lot of new stores to open towards the end of February. Many of these new stores have now started their fit outs with some of them being ready for opening on February 21. Other stores will take longer to complete their fit outs and they will open in the few weeks following.

We will have other additional stores to welcome to the Centre and we will let you know who these are over the coming weeks. We will also be preparing for a Grand Opening just after Easter, so keep a look out for details regarding that!

Amongst our new stores we have some fantastic tenants to welcome to the Centre – ASB and Westpac will both have bright new branches opening at the front of our entrance to the new extension off Athelstan Street. We also have some exciting clothing retailers opening including Postie and Pagani. Food retailers Maki Mono, Muffin Break and Wendy’s Supa Sundaes will add to our already varied food offering in the Centre. We also have Simply Beauty opening who offer an extensive range of beauty services.

Many of you will have noticed that our new entrance next to Paper Plus is now open – through our iconic rotunda feature. This has greatly enhanced the entrance on this side and has improved traffic flow in and out of the Centre.

In addition to these new retailers, we have some existing retailers who will also be relocating. Unichem Pharmacy and On Time both move into brand new stores in the new extension. Subway will relocate from their current location to a new store next to our impressive rotunda entrance. Moda Bella will also complete a new store fit out in their current location.

Our entrance into the car park off Athelstan Street will be re-opening soon so keep a look out! In the meantime we still have two other entrances into our car park – one off Barrington Street and one off Simeon Street.

Towards the end of January we will begin works to replace the existing flooring in the main centre common area. New tiles will be laid to match in with our new toilet block and the floor in the extension.

Anita. Anita has a passion for health, fitness, and enjoying life. She believes Any me Fitness reflects that. A er joining Any me Fitness as a member in 2010, she felt it was the best she had experienced and jumped at the chance to own one. They were in the middle of a fit-out with their building when the earthquake struck on February 22. Although the building had no damage, Anita was unsure at the me whether to push ahead, with the uncertainty of Christchurch. “We hadn’t even opened, but I went with my gut ins nct to just go with it. We put everything into it and didn’t know if people would even join a er the earthquake,” says Anita. It was the best move she made. “We got full very quickly. The bulk of our members are new to the gym and have never been to one before and were coming here for stress release. The community support has been fantas c. They come here to unwind. “It’s going great. We are a small environment with no pressure. We care about our members and are always there for them to offer help and encouragement.” Any me Fitness is involved in the community and will be part of The City Surf on March 25. This is not the fairy tale you remember, but it’s one you won’t forget.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane. Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now, and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time time.

MUSIC, entertainment, and fireworks will fill North Hagley Park next month when the ASB Classical Sparks show returns. About 100,000 people are expected to attend the free event at 6.45pm on Sunday, February 5. It will feature a variety of musicians, singers, dancers, and artists guided by conductor Kenneth Young. Christchurch City Council marketing manager Richard Stokes said it would have a truly international flavour. “In addition to the extraordinary Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, we have managed to secure top Australian opera singers Jud Arthur Spectacular show: A previous ASB Classical Sparks concert. and Virgilio Marino, who are sure fireworks display for the show’s finale. to belt out some impressive notes,” “We suggest people arrive early to ensure a good he said. The Linwood College Orchestra, fresh from its parking spot and space on the lawn,” Mr Stokes successful European tour, will open the concert said. The event is part of the Garden City Summer Times and Russian brother and sister duo Tim and Yulia Mullayanov, six-time New Zealand amateur ballroom festival. Donations to St John Ambulance will be collected during the evening. champions, will perform throughout. Dux Live in Addington proving to be popular ONE of Christchurch’s most recognised bars and restaurants, which was forced to close after the February earthquake, is thriving at Addington. The Dux Live in Lincoln Road, Addington has many of the elements that made Dux de Lux so popular, providing casual indoor and outdoor dining, a relaxed lounge-style meeting place, and a late-night music venue, general manager Ross Herrick said. “Dux Live is a totally new concept, but many of the fans of the original Dux de Lux will find a lot that’s familiar. If you’ve been missing our award-winning brewery beers on tap, our famous pizzas, nachos, and chips, or just having a place to meet with that friendly Dux atmosphere, you’ll find all that at Dux Live.” However, the difference in the new venue is the opportunity the team had to design and fit-out a music-friendly venue, he said. “Dux Live has been carefully designed and built, with everything from acoustic wall and ceiling linings to a new digital sound system, to deliver a great sound for music fans. The size of the venue and standard of the set-up has also meant we will be able to attract bigger acts, such as the Henry Rollins Spoken Word Tour, which we’ll be hosting soon. “Having a late licence until 3am also means we’ll be able to host DJs and other acts that appeal more to a club crowd, although the gigs we book will still reflect a broad cross-section of original New Zealand and international music.” While larger events would require a cover charge, they are committed to making as many live music events as possible available for free. And although Dux Live reflected many of the best elements of Dux de Lux, it isn’t a replacement. “We are still very committed to getting back to the Dux de Lux, and the Arts Centre board and management have affirmed that there will always be a place for us in a rebuilt Arts Centre. Dux Live, too, isn’t a temporary bar. We plan to continue this operation here after we reopen the Dux de Lux.”

‘Musos’ to gather for drum festival

Music maker: Doug Brush with a collection of his percussion instruments.

THE Little River Campground will echo to the beat of the drum and the rhythm of percussion this weekend, as music lovers gather for a festival in celebration of the drum. A giant Japanese Taiko drum, a tambourine-like Arabic drum, and a global selection of percussion instruments and others will be played and studied over the two days, coordinator Marcus Puentener says. “For those interested in experiencing a unique cultural outing, the Drum Festival is a first of it kind. We have some world-class performers appearing, including Chicago-born Doug Brush and Marco Zonka as well as a samba band, Takumi Japanese, and a marimba duo. “Instead of the audience sitting in front of a stage, the performers will set up in different areas suitable for their instruments. There will be a campfire jam in the evening led by Tribal Massive. Bring your drums or anything that makes a noise to join in.” The Drum Festival is being held at the Little River Campground, Okuti Valley Road, Little River this Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call 325 1014. Tickets are available from Under The Radar website, www.undertheradar.co.nz.

Circus performers to feature at open day VISITORS to the open day at CPIT this Saturday may see world record-holders in action. The Loons Circus Theatre Company, including CPIT CircoArts graduate Pascal Ackermann, will present an exclusive show. Mr Ackermann holds the world record for fire eating, set when he extinguished 89 fire torches in one minute with his mouth. The company’s Twisty Twins, Nele and Jola Siezen, and contortionist Skye Broberg smashed a world record in 2009 by staying in a box measuring measuring 66.04 x 68.58 x 55.88 cm (26 x 27 x 22 in) for six minutes, 13.52 seconds. “At the end of the day though, it’s not just about tricks; it’s about creating shows that entertain the socks off every audience and make them laugh and go away happy.”

The Loons will perform on the carnival stage at CPIT’s Madras Street campus at 12.30pm. Other entertainment between 11am and 3pm will feature CPIT Jazz School musicians and buskers who specialise in adagio, freak show, and contortion. Other activities are the Speakers Series in which CPIT tutors, students, graduates, and industry partners will present 15-minute sessions. These will start at 1pm in the Imagitech Theatre. Demonstrations from specific CPIT programmes will include Master the Pasta by Hospitality, picture framing by Trades, home brew testing by Applied Science, learning Te Reo through movement at TPW, a CAD experiment by Architecture, and health checks by Nursing. Check out www.cpit.ac.nz. All activities are free.

Hodgson and Bell win SBS pairs competition

Family man: Steven Hart enjoys the sun with two of his sons Jack, left, and Thomas while fighting rare illness.

All Blacks to pad up for charity cricket FIVE All Blacks are to take part in a charity cricket match on Sunday to help raise funds for Christchurch teacher Steven Hart who is battling a rare and aggressive form of appendix cancer. The match, to be played at St Thomas of Canterbury College grounds starting at noon, will see Andrew Ellis, Israel Dagg, Corey Flynn, Kieran Read, and Wyatt Crockett join with other sports personalities in the 40-over fundraiser. Sir Richard Hadlee is the teams’ manager and match managers are former Blackcap Stephen Boock and Keith Yardley. Mr Hart is the deputy principal at St Thomas of Canterbury College and has coached both the school’s first XV rugby and first XI cricket teams. Married to Samantha, the 34-year-old has four young children. Chris O’Connell, head of sport at St Thomas’, said

that the idea of having a charity cricket game was a way of having fun, raising some much needed money and doing an activity that Steve was very interested in. “The fact that we have All Blacks playing in the game is just awesome and Steve will be absolutely blown away that those lads have offered to be involved in an event that is ultimately for him.” Mr Hart has endured two lots of surgery, including removal of half his bowel and appendix where the cancer existed and may require on-going chemotherapy. The Steven Hart Fund has been set up so the Hart family knows that they have a full support network of people behind them that can contribute in some way. Messages of support can be emailed to Steve at steven_hart@hotmail.com.

PETE Hodgson and Ross Bell emerged as winners of the 2012 SBS Stewart Buttar Pairs competition, hosted by the Burnside Bowling Club, after a rainshortened day of competition on Sunday. The pair defeated Shaun O’Neill and Paul Girdler 11-9 in a tight final, which was decided on the last bowl. Burnside Club vice president Bill Fowlie said that with the strongest field in memory, it was a great result for Hodgson and Bell. The pair had been surprise finalists and winners over the more fancied pair of O’Neill and Girdler, despite Hodgson having won the national singles title recently. “The team they were playing against are past winners of this tournament,” he said. “If you were betting on it, Paul and Shaun would probably have been ranked in the top three, so when they got in the final, it was expected they would win.” The final was reduced from 15 to 13 ends due to rain delay.

Dragons roar against Manawatu CANTERBURY United’s next big challenge will be to keep their feet on the ground in their match against Waikato FC this weekend after a huge win over Youngheart Manawatu on Sunday. The Dragons had a convincing 9-1 goal romp over the hapless Manawatu side at English Park. However, coach Keith Braithwaite warned that his players would face much tougher competition against a Waikato team, which drew its away match against competition leaders Auckland City over the weekend. “The challenge is to keep them focused and make sure that they’ve got the right attitude and again, you’ve got to start from scratch and go out and perform from that. What has happened with the win last game is gone.” With six games remaining and Auckland City four points clear at the top of the competition, Braithwaite knows that it would be hard to catch the Captain fantastic: All White Aaron Clapham played a Aucklanders. “Our aim is just to go out and win as many games starring role in Canterbury United’s win over Youngheart Manawatu on Sunday. as we can.”
