“It would be the last resort, I feel.”

“Yes actually. Money voted them in and keeps them in. The ratepayers should be consulted about councillors’ pay rises. It is public money.”

“No I don’t think so. Not at this important time.”

“No, absolutely not. It would be awful. People should get over Tony Marryatt’s pay rise and take one step after the other, put aside their differences and move forward.”

“No. It is better to have the devil you know rather than the devil you don’t.”

“No. They could be easily replaced by the Merivale Precinct Society. Any group, no matter how dysfunctional, will do a better job than the current Christchurch City Council is doing now.”

MANY top entertainment acts are giving Christchurch a miss these days, but the magnificent dancing horses of El Caballo Blanco have arrived to cast their spell over local audiences. The Melbourne based company is in the city to perform The Dance of the White Stallions, featuring traditional Spanish-themed equestrian performances and Flamenco dancing. Riding master Rene Gasser said he was pleased to be able to bring the show back to Christchurch after a previously scheduled performance had to be cancelled due to the February 22 earthquake. “I’m hoping that we can take people’s minds off their troubles for at least a couple of hours and give them a bit of joy,” he said. “To see these beautiful animals which you can only see on television and the costume and the tradition that’s behind it, a lot of people really

Council meets today AN attempt to heal problems within the Christchurch City Council will be made today, when councillors are due to meet with Local Government Minister Nick Smith. The meeting, called by Mayor Bob Parker, follows weeks of controversy about council chief executive Tony Marryatt’s $68,000 pay rise, a recently announced $80,000 communications review and comments from some councillors that the council should be replaced with commissioners or Mr Marryatt should be sacked. The meeting will not be open to the public.

love it.” The previously cancelled show had sold more than 6000 tickets and El Caballo Blanco had received many emails from people who were disappointed to have missed them. “We felt we had to do it, just to have peace of mind,” he said. “Usually we would wait another two years or so but this time we thought ‘nah, we’ll go down, especially for Christchurch’.” Although Mr Gasser and his family have been based in Australia for many years, he grew up in the Swiss town of Shaffheusen and his family has had an association with Spanish riding schools and equestrian performance for many generations. “In Spain the horse is very highly thought of, it’s been in their blood for many hundreds of years, and also the Flamenco dancing.” Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter said events like El Caballo Blanco, as well as last year’s Placido Domingo concert, coming to Christchurch showed the city could still host international entertainment. “I think it’s a great thing for the people of the city and it will bring people in from all over Canterbury. It’s one of those events where there will be a quite a lot of interest in it and it’s obviously sold very well.”

Fifty years after flying her first kite Ms Adam still loves how kites make people smile and hopes the spirits of Christchurch residents will be lifted at tomorrow’s Kite Day. Ms Adam was hoping Kite Day, which has been running for five years, would draw a crowd of 6000 – 8000 people to New Brighton beach. “Flying a kite takes people back to a simpler time and is a great way of connecting to nature. “It’s also a wonderful stress-reliever and I think people are looking to have some fun and relaxation.” People can bring their own kites or purchase one at the kite shop on the day. The event runs from 1-4pm and people are advised to arrive early or take a bus as parking will be limited. Photo: Gina McKenzie

Award in honour of CTV reporter TALENTED young journalist and poet Rhys Brookbanks, who was killed in the CTV building collapse in the February 22 earthquake, is being remembered in the form of an award for travel writers. Mr Brookbanks, 25, was a member of Travcom, a professional association of the travel media industry which organises the annual Cathay Pacific Travel Media Awards. Travcom president Pamela Wade said the one-off Rhys Brookbanks Memorial Award

of $1000 would be presented for the best travel story published about Canterbury or highlighting Christchurch as a gateway to the South Island. “It’s a small way of acknowledging Rhys, and of supporting the rebuilding of tourism in Canterbury,” she said. Entries close next month and more information can be found at www.travelcommunicators.co.nz. All winners will be announced at a gala dinner awards evening on Tuesday March 20 in Auckland.

Waiting game: Twisted Hop co-owners Stephen Hardman, left, and Martin Bennett say they’ve worked as hard as they can to re-establish their brewery, but delays mean they won’t be trading again before their business interruption insurance runs out. Photo: Samantha Early

Samantha Early

FOR Christchurch business owners who’ve been struggling to re-establish following the February 22 earthquake, the approaching first anniversary brings extra pressure. Most companies with business interruption insurance policies have theirs for a year and the clock is ticking. Twisted Hop co-owner Martin Bennett is frustrated at the delays they’ve faced trying to set up again. He and business partner Stephen Hardman are working to establish a new brewery in Wigram and bars in Lincoln and Woolston, but they can’t get their brewing equipment out of their central city red-zoned Poplar Lane premises because buildings are being demolished nearby. “It’s just really frustrating for us because we’ve finally got somewhere to put things and we can’t get in to get our brewery equipment.” Their business interruption insurance runs out on February 22. “We really need to be making some income somehow; otherwise, we’ve really got no money coming in at all.” Their insurers won’t pay out on their equipment because it’s sitting in the building relatively undamaged

and they’ve had to increase their debt to fund the new projects. They ordered new equipment in October, but that won’t be ready until at least March. Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said the expiry of business interruption insurance was an issue. “But it’s not one we’re sending up in blazing lights at this stage, whether no-one’s talking about it or whether they have accepted that business interruption expires on February 22 and that was the deal and they will accept other arrangements. I expect the latter. “We do know 90 per cent of our 360 members who were inside the four avenues are still in business and they were the worst hit businesses.” Recover Canterbury communications manager Pip Tschudin said that it was impossible to say how many businesses would struggle, but Recover Canterbury wanted to hear from them. “We don’t want to be the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. We don’t want to wait until the interruption insurance stops and they go, ‘hey we can’t pay the bills we can’t keep going’. We need them to come and talk to us now.”

MAINLAND PRESS 4 Letter to the editor

FRIDAY JANUARY 27 2012

Mr Marryatt I HAVE recently arrived back home to Christchurch after having lived in Tauranga for a year and while reading the Mainland Press, once again I am disturbed to see Dave Henderson’s mate back in the headlines again! I am aghast that he should be offered, and is accepting, a $70,000 pay increase, which brings his salary over and above the prime minister of this country. We, as taxpayers, contribute to the prime minister’s salary and in similar circumstances, but as ratepayers. The prime minister has the whole of the country to oversee whereas Tony Marryatt is second-in-charge of Christchurch! I have not been adversely affected by the earthquake, but it only takes a drive over to the eastern side to see the damage. Many people still have no basic facilities, but you can be sure that Tony Marryatt is residing in luxury and grabbing every dollar that will be offered. And the mayor is no better. So bring on the next elections and let’s see these heads roll and perhaps people like Helen Broughton, Yani Johanson, and the like will take charge. I have never participated in a march yet; but I will be lining up on February 1st. Suzette Meroiti, Islington

Inspections need to be ongoing THE Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission is steadily working through the difďŹ cult process of hearing evidence about building collapses, which caused loss of life around the city on February 22. On Tuesday it was buildings in City Mall which were under the spotlight. On Wednesday, it was the turn of Joe’s Garage, a cafĂŠ at 194 Hereford St. I took an interest in this since a man killed at the site had the same surname as me. Greg Tobin, a 25-year-old chef, had only been in the country a month when the quake claimed his life. Mr Tobin, a former British soldier, ran out of the building, was struck by falling masonry, and died instantly. His family in Yorkshire was following the hearing live via the internet. In the evidence given, the commission heard that strengthening had been completed on the building in 2007, and the September 4, 2010 quake caused only minor damage. After the quake, Joe’s Garage was closed for four weeks to complete inspections and

remedial work was completed. This included parapet repairs and the ďŹ tting of brackets, which was done to the satisfaction of engineers and the Christchurch City Council. Then the Boxing Day 2010 quake struck. The council did not make an inspection of Joe’s Garage and only did so of buildings it identiďŹ ed as being of particular concern. Media releases advised owners to check their buildings before reoccupying them. Joe’s Garage sustained no visible damage. Finally, came the quake of February 22 and tragedy. We can take from this, I guess, that no amount of strengthening work might have been enough for some of those inner city buildings that collapsed on February 22 and that the effects of the nasty Boxing Day shake softened things up considerably for the February 22 brute. Speaking to leading city architect Sir Miles

ONE MORE THING

Warren last week, he said that many buildings in the central city were a disaster waiting to happen. A large proportion dated from before the Napier earthquake of 1931, after which some quake codes were applied. These central city buildings came from a time when Christchurch had twice the retail space of any city in the country. “So we had a disproportionate amount of dangerous buildings,â€? he said. Over the years, the council had been warned by him and others that urgent strengthening should be completed, but it was placed in the too hard basket because of the cost and probable backlash from building owners. The council, to be fair, was getting things rolling to a degree when September 4, 2010, happened. For the present, however, difďŹ cult though it is, owners should ensure that whenever a large magnitude shake occurs, engineer inspections are made of buildings that are used in business and for general public use. You can’t be too careful.

OPINION

Life is really such a beach I LEFT work early last Friday to my colleagues’ relief, as the Christchurch City Council was imploding on itself. I was feeling depressed and embarrassed at the enormity of the task at hand for the community, being sidetracked by political bickering. So what do I do when down? I throw myself into the environment I love: at Waikuku Beach. Grabbing the family, a picnic tea, and a beer, I went to the beach. The easterly was doing its best, so to the estuary, nestling among the dunes to protect us from the sandblast. And here starts the spoiler. Despite a bylaw that prohibits vehicles from the beach and estuary, here again was a shiny 4-wheel drive stuck in the protected wetlands. This is where I lose the plot. I can’t help it. Something in my brain starts a process that’s akin to a white pointer shark at

feeding time. A digger was about to break through the protection barriers to ‘rescue’ the vehicle, now sitting up to its roof in water. A few choice words from moi saw a hasty retreat, but not before an exchange with a local resident I had locked horns with before. What I don’t get is why I am the one portrayed as so unreasonable when ‘dipsticks’ in vehicles take to the beaches and estuary. For what? To rip up the sand dunes, burnouts in the mud, a nice family drive? Depicted as polarising because I happen to think that vehicles and motorbikes belong on the road. I have watched mum, dad, and the two kids drive through manned patrol areas; watched, while kids playing on the beach have to stop running to the water as these vehicles go by.

We don’t expect our kids to take their buckets and spades and play on the road, so why do we have to share the beach with a vehicle? I am ďŹ ercely envious of Christchurch where vehicles are banned, yet in Waimakariri, we still allow vehicles to drive on the beach up to Woodend. The problem is that the signs keep being ripped out and so the driving up the beach to the Rakahuri (Ashley) River continues. The authorities,

despite the costs associated with monitoring and enforcement, despite the constant disregard for the rules or the environment, keep giving this concession. I have thought long and hard about why it is I am so entrenched in my views. It’s because I want to leave a legacy to my children and my grandchildren. One in which they respect the environment they live in, work hard to protect and enhance it; that they think about how to live in harmony with all the values and beauty that our coastal environment brings to us all. I expect them to leave only their footprints as they appreciate all it has to offer. After watching a huge tractor extract said vehicle, with the sun setting over Southern Alps, wading birds ďŹ nding a meal, the peace was shattered by two motorbikes roaring up the beach. The rest is unprintable.

CTV, Maori TV to broadcast memorial service live CANTERBURY Television [CTV] and Maori Television [MTV] is to broadcast the Christchurch Earthquake Memorial ceremony live on February 22. In a joint statement on Wednesday CTV chairman Nick Smith and Maori Television chief executive Jim Mather announced that the full memorial service from North Hagley Park would be broadcast live on both channels. “Both stations wish to record the anniversary of this signiďŹ cant event that has affected all people throughout New Zealand as well as those in Canterbury who have suffered the devastation of the earthquake and the subsequent ongoing difďŹ culties.â€? Mr Mather said that given the tragic CTV loss of 16 staff on February 22 the decision made to support CTV and take the memorial live to the rest of the country was very easy. Mr Smith added that all CTV staff and affected families would be most grateful that MTV had given Canterbury this support as citizens and business throughout New Zealand realised the ongoing na-

tional importance of the region. He said to their knowledge neither TVNZ or TV3 was carrying live coverage and this made the MTV offer of a national broadcast more relevant and community spirited. Mr Smith said that CTV would be making an approach to NZ On Air for funding assistance for the broadcast but noted that Maori TV had agreed to underwrite the cost of the production should the funding request be declined by NZ On Air. Mr Mather said that whilst there was no commercial imperative to fund the production “it is the right thing to doâ€? and the guarantee would allow CTV to move ahead with its planning immediately, whilst awaiting a response from NZ On Air. Partnering CTV and MTV will be Mainland Press who made it possible for CTV to get back on air after the station was destroyed. The telecast will begin at noon on February 22 and conclude at 1.30pm although these times are to be conďŹ rmed.

Action group wants eastern Parklands rezone Gina McKenzie

OVER 85 percent of eastern Parklands residents want their land rezoned red according to a survey of 300 homeowners carried out by the Parklands Action Group. The group, formed after the December 23 earthquakes, wanted the area rezoned from blue-green to red. Group organiser Vanessa Tappenden, who has a PhD in geology, said the survey showed that only 12 percent of residents wanted the area to remain green. “The streets completely flood when it rains and with every shake there is more damage. I don’t know how they can even think about rebuilding here when it’s completely uneconomical and impractical. “People around here feel trapped. They want to leave but they can’t. “It’s inhumane to force people to rebuild on such damaged land.” Dr Tappenden was concerned that the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) was not allocating enough time to thoroughly reexamining eastern Parklands. More liquefaction: Parklands Red Zone Action Group organiser Vanessa Tappenden “Over 85 percent of the residents surveyed are reporting surveys her damaged street in eastern Parklands as workers dampen liquefaction and significant damage as the result of failed foundations with repair her neighbour’s sewer pipes. severe tilting, cracking of slabs and leaning walls. This is an additional 20 percent above the 65 percent already paid out by EQC.” Dr Tappenden said her group had met with Cera earlier this week and expressed their concerns. “I am worried that they will just make a decision on a section by section basis without considering the area as a whole. Acting Cera CEO Diane Turner said engineers are providing Cera with further technical advice related to the December 23 earthquakes. “We are using the best information we have available at the time and residents will be contacted to discuss what, if any, options will be considered.” Ms Turner said residents would receive results of the geo-technical survey by approximately February 17. Dr Tappenden said her group has written to the government and Cera requesting that EQC or an independent structural engineer assess all homes where claims have not been passed to the insurer. “They have to take what happened here in December into consideration. All we want is for a proper process to be carried out.”

Tournament for former Black Stick

In action: Amanda Hooper playing for the Black Sticks against Canada.

FORMER Canterbury and Black Sticks hockey player Amanda Hooper will be remembered with a hockey tournament to be played days before the anniversary of the earthquake that took her life. Mrs Hooper was working for Marac Finance in the PGC building on February 22 when it collapsed during the earthquake, killing her and 17 others. To celebrate her life and raise money for the Amanda Hooper Trust, a group of her friends and former hockey players have organised a Super-Six hockey tournament and fundraising dinner and auction on the weekend of February 18 to 19. The Amanda Hooper Trust beneďŹ ts Mrs Hooper’s husband Ritchy and their two daughters Aimee, 4, and Keily, 2. Anne-Marie McRae, one of the event organisers, said Amanda’s friends were doing all they could to make life easier for Mr Hooper and the girls.

“Amanda was a great friend – thoughtful, generous, and seless. She would do anything for anyone. She was always the ďŹ rst to remember a birthday or anniversary. A SCULPTURE in memory of the Japanese victims of the February earthquake will be blessed at a ceremony being held at the Christ’s College Chapel on February 22. Approximately 50 parents of the young Japanese earthquake victims, who are coming to Christchurch from Toyama to mark the ďŹ rst anniversary of the event, will attend the ceremony. The idea for the sculpture grew out of local resident David Bolam-Smith’s concern that there was “no spiritual or focal point for the Japanese visitors to pray at while they were here to remember their children.â€? Mr Bolam-Smith is the deputy-chair of the Christchurch-Toyama sister city committee. He commissioned Tai Tapu sculptor Annabel Menzies-Joyce to create the sculpture out of glass, with the cost being covered by donations and fundraising. The design of the approximately 1.6 metre-high work represents the native kahikatea tree, Mr Bolam-Smith said. The prism at the top represents both the peaceful, pure water of a New Zealand rainforest stream and the glass itself symbolises Aoraki (Mt Cook). “Kahikatea trees grow in clumps with their roots and branches entwined, giving them strength in unity. This illustrates the strength and unity of the families from Toyama and all the other victims’ families as they gather to remember their children lost in the Christchurch earthquake.â€? The ceremony will take place at 4.30pm at the chapel. Dean Peter Beck and a Maori kaumÄ tua will bless the sculpture, the Japanese Society of Canterbury choir will sing, and there will be an Ikebana display. The sculpture will remain at the chapel, which is being used as a temporary Christ Church Cathedral, and may be moved to the pro-Cathedral at a later date, In memory: David Bolam-Smith with the almost-completed sculpture, which will be placed on a wooden base. Mr Bolam-Smith said.

FRIDAY JANUARY 27 2012

City companies finalists in business awards “Most of our business in the last couple of years has been export based, with our product going to Australia, the US, and Germany in particular,” managing director Chris Mardon said. Christchurch Engine Centre, SKOPE, and Tait Radio Communications are all finalists in the best business operating internationally under $50 million. Established in 2001, Christchurch Engine Centre (CHECC) has used global networks to grow its share of the aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul business in the process becoming one of the aviation industry’s most renowned facilities. General manager Brendon McWilliam said distance from its customer base was a major challenge for the company, especially with freight costs for an engine sometimes in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

FOUR Christchurch companies are among the 27 finalists in the 2012 New Zealand International Business Awards. These are Energy Mad, Christchurch Engine Centre, SKOPE, and Tait Radio Communications. Run by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and ANZ, the awards recognise the many ways companies now do business globally. Energy Mad, manufacturer of the Ecobulb®, is a finalist in four categories: Best business operating internationally under $10 million; Best use of research and development in international business; Best use of design in international business; and Most innovative approach to international business. The company started in 2004 with the aim of saving enough electricity to power Christchurch. As the business grew, it expanded into the international market.

Family-owned SKOPE Industries is recognised internationally for innovation in heating and refrigeration technologies. It has the largest design and innovation centre of its kind in Australasia, with the cutting-edge technology used to meet customers’ needs bringing in high export-based returns. In the 2011 financial year, 80 per cent of SKOPE’s products were exported, generating international revenue of $66.5 million. In spite of a recessive business environment, SKOPE recruited 107 new staff in 2010. Canterbury’s largest privatesector employer, Tait Radio Communications, has 42 years’ experience in radio communications. Managing director Frank Owen said Tait was delighted to be a finalist in the awards. In 2010, Tait’s revenue exceeded $US150 million, of which 95 per Technical: Christchurch Engine Centre staff processing an Airbus V2500 power plant through final assembly. cent was earned offshore.

Ruth DYSON Summer fun: Crowds enjoy last year’s dragon boat regatta at Lake Pegasus.

Powering on: A crew from last year’s regatta inches towards the finish line.

Annual dragon boat regatta at Pegasus THE sandy beaches of Lake Pegasus, near Woodend, will be crowded with spectators on Sunday for the annual Aoraki Summer Sizzler Super 12 Dragon Boat Regatta. The event brings a new form of dragon boating to the South Island with only 12 paddlers needed instead of a full crew of 22. Teams also need a sweep and a caller, but sweeps can be allocated on the day if you don’t have one.

Composite teams and casual paddlers are also welcome. There will be plenty of fun races and events on display. Along with 250 metre sprints, there will also be super spring races from Aoraki Bay to King’s Beach. This features a Le Mans start and finishes with a beach dash to the finish line. Entry is $5 per person and the event runs from 9am to 4pm.

don’t know about you, but when I hear the word courge e it sounds so exo c, sophis cated, and almost elusive. But when I hear it called zucchini, nothing of the sort comes to mind. This super easy to grow vegetable is one that every garden should have. It produces a decent crop easily, will grow in plots or pots, big or small, and the flowers are edible, too! I have grown both the green and yellow courge es. Both have a very similar taste, but the main difference is that the yellow stands out more in a salad due to its colour. Courge e and zucchini are the same vegetable and when le too long, they become marrows; hence, it's easy to see why some gardeners find these vegetables confusing.

Being members of the pumpkin family, zucchini is a popular warm season crop to grow, and they only need a small space. Ideal for both the garden and containers, anyone with a sunny backyard will be able to enjoy this fresh vegetable during the warmer months of the year. Choose a situa on where there is plenty of air movement. Sow seeds in the ground or in trays and transplant once up, or simply buy plants already germinated from the garden shop. Expect to see seedlings appear in seven to 10 days. Zucchini plants are very frost tender. Protect crops if there is a chance of a sudden cold snap. It’s not too late to sow a new crop now. Plant out 70cm to a metre apart in rows or in pockets of the vegetable garden with good air movement. Choose a container, old tyres, or a pot that’s at least twice the size of a kitchen bucket approx 20 litres, fill with vegetable mix, and plant. Water in the morning when possible and avoid ge ng water on the foliage. Zucchinis are prone to mildew (white grey-like mould) on top of the foliage. This is o en due to poor air circula on, wet or humid weather, and plant stress. It may not devastate or affect the crop, but the problem with leaving it untreated is that it quickly spreads; hence, it's best to get rid of it as other sensi ve crops such as tomatoes, basil, young seedlings, and roses can be crippled by mildew. The large yellow flowers are edible, too, and are highly sought a er by gourmets when filled with a delicate stuffing. Harvest when the size appeals to you. About 15cm is best because if you leave them too long, they will literally double in size in a ma er of days. Once over this size, the flavour changes and soon they turn into marrows whose flavour is less dis nc ve. These large, oversized zucchinis are wonderful for stuffing and for kids to grow themselves, as names or designs can be carved into the skins carefully. Zucchinis should be regularly harvested when small to encourage con nuous cropping.

Last Christchurch gig for Grenell www.quotesmart.co.nz AMIRIA Grenell from the group Fly My Pretties will perform her last gig in Christchurch at the Dux Live next Wednesday before moving to Wellington. Grenell’s album Three Feathers, which was released last September, has been nominated for the Best Folk Album at the New Zealand Music Awards with the winner announced today. The album was produced by her older brother Oakley at the family farm in Whitecliffs, Canterbury. “It was a wonderful experience to record where

we grew up,” said Grenell. She describes her musical style as a unique blend, which ranges from contemporary folk to reggae, country, and blues. Grenell’s inspiration for her song writing comes from a variety of sources and is influenced by growing up in a musical family, by being a young parent, and also by friends, whānau, and environmental and world issues. The gig begins at 8pm with Grenell opening for Anna Coddington, who is also a member of Fly My Pretties.

Scottish culture at Riccarton Bush HIGHLAND dancing, pipe bands, and haggis will be among the sights, sounds, and tastes of the third annual Canterbury Scottish Cultural Festival next month. The festival, to be held at Riccarton Bush on February 12, will include a display led by the City of Christchurch Highland Pipe Band, prizes for the best-presented highland dancer and person most fashionably attired in tartan, a haggis ceremony, whisky tasting, and craft market among other attractions. It is also believed that local Scottish clans will take the opportunity to hold their annual reunions at the festival and a ‘clan tent alley’ has been planned. The usually colourful Grand Parade of Scottish organisations and Scottish highland and country dancers and clans will commence at 1pm from the Kahu Road entrance to Riccarton Bush and be followed soon after by the opening ceremony, led by

The classic Kiwi lifestyle appeals Located just 20 minutes drive north of Christchurch, Pegasus is a town focused on community and safety. The classic Kiwi lifestyle is at the heart of the town.

Pegasus residents enjoy the scenery from one of the many walking tracks throughout the wetland area

Visitors to Pegasus will be amazed by the recreational amenities that have already been established, including a 14-hectare feature lake. With 11 sandy beaches spread over the 4 kilometres of lake frontage, a large waterfall, and an island accessed by suspension bridge, this is an ideal spot to swim and picnic in summer. “We’ve seen a big influx of visitors enjoying the lake on warm days here over summer. We definitely encourage Cantabrians to come out and experience for themselves what this amazing community has to offer,” says managing director Bob Robertson. “Bring the kids along and grab an ice cream from the General Store and spend the day relaxing by the lake. Or meet friends at the Flat White Café for great café food, wine and an onsite coffee roastery.” During summer months the lake hire centre, on the beach adjacent to the Flat White Café, is a hub of activity. With Optimist and Piccolo yachts, single and double kayaks, and mountain bikes available, there’s something fun for every member of the family to enjoy. Alternatively, bring your clubs and have a round of golf at the championship Pegasus Golf & Sports Club. The club facilities also include a covered driving range, tennis courts, gym, pro shop and Bunker Café & Bar. As well as the lake, Pegasus has a direct access road to the local surf beach in Pegasus Bay, with a car park located right next to the dunes. There are also popular walking tracks and boardwalks throughout the wetland areas linking Pegasus to the coastal reserves. This area is teeming with native trees, plants and birdlife.

“The community spirit is well and truly alive at Pegasus. Once you’ve visited it’s not hard to see what makes living here so appealing. It’s so refreshing to see kids just being kids - playing in playgrounds, walking their dogs and enjoying the quintessential Kiwi upbringing in this safe environment,” Bob Robertson says. Pegasus is not your regular subdivision. Upon completion, Pegasus will be home to up to 7,000 people. Already the town is home to a diverse population which includes young couples, families, retired couples and everyone in between.

With 1,200 residential sites, and up to 1,500 townhouses and apartment lots, the town also has capacity for over 100 retail and service outlets, plus commercial space. Titled sections, and house and land packages are both available now. “Pegasus offers the perfect opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, while still being only a short commute away. Come out and see for yourself. Bring your bikes, your togs, the kids and your dog and enjoy Canterbury’s newest town this summer.”

MAINLAND PRESS

FRIDAY JANUARY 27 2012

Ford Focus wins NZ Car of the Year THE new generation Ford Focus has been judged New Zealand’s Car of the Year by the country’s leading motoring writers and commentators. Launched here in the third quarter of 2011, the new model is the third generation of the Focus and the first to scoop New Zealand’s highest new car automotive honour. In reaching their decision to award the latest Focus the country’s Car of the Year accolade, members of the New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild assessed a number of variants in the range, which includes 1.6and 2.0-litre petrol variants as well as a fuel-efficient 2.0-litre turbo-diesel version. In addition to performance and handling, the facets under consideration included suitability for the task

for which the Focus is designed, safety accoutrements, economy, visual appeal, value for money, ease of operation, and its level of home comforts and quality of finish. Guild president David Linklater said previous iterations of the Focus had also been highly regarded, particularly in the area of driver appeal. However, in its latest guise, it pushed its segment forward in crucial areas such as powertrain efficiency, packaging quality, and equipment, all without compromising the fun factor for which it was known. “A particular appeal of the latest Focus is its excellence in a range of motoring environments; whether it is urban or highway motoring, or covering ground over the country’s secondary roads, the latest Focus is always impressive. Avon City Ford chief executive John Luxton said that the latest version of the Focus was exceptional. “The Focus has been an outstanding car with all models, he said. “It’s setting the benchmark and it’s easily the best in its class at the moment. The model had already been selling well, but he expected the extra exposure brought by the award would boost sales further. Try this amazing trick and amaze your family and friends. You can also learn about something called surface tension! You will need: matches (ask an adult to safely remove the heads) bowl of clean water washing up liquid lump of sugar

What to do: 1. Place the matches on the water surface.

2. Dip the sugar lump in the middle of the bowl. The matches should move towards the sugar.

3. Now add a drop of washing up liquid to the middle of the bowl. The matches should quickly move away from the drop.

Rabbits and parrots can see behind themselves without turning their heads!

How it works When you add the sugar to the bowl water is drawn towards it. This produces a small current pulling the matches with it. The washing up liquid reduces the surface tension in the middle of the bowl. The matches are attracted to the outside of the bowl where the surface tension is higher. Surface tension is the “stretchy skin effect that is seen on the surface of water. You can observe this effect by floating a paper clip in water.
