Crusaders playing their part rebuilding morale Chris Tobin

rugby is a part of this community, we reflect our community. We know a lot of things have happened and it’s not easy for a hell of a lot of people. We’re really aware of it.” Blackadder said people needed a release and something to focus on and the Crusaders provided such a focus. The Crusaders have a warm-up match against the Highlanders in Greymouth this evening and will have their first match in this season’s Super 15 competition against the Blues at Auckland’s Eden Park on Friday, February 24. As part of their community involvement they have been making their training sessions open to the public and helping with ‘Big Give’ where
they go out to help around the city. This week they assisted Marian College staff and senior student leaders setting up the school. Last week, they gave 10 children the chance to go horse-riding at the Blue Springs Polo Farm with the assistance of the ‘Make a Wish’ Foundation and the ‘Walking with Horses’ charity. During last year players helped clear liquefaction in devastated parts of the city and assisted Christchurch City Mission with its food bank and to set up the marquee for Christmas dinner which catered for 650 people. City missioner Michael Gorman said their work was greatly appreciated. “What I like about it is you see these fit, healthy people, role models,
willing to help people for whom life has been less kind.” As to the 2011 playing season, Blackadder said it had been “surreal’.”With home ground AMI Stadium knocked out of action by the February 22 earthquake, the Crusaders played all their matches outside Christchurch, criss-crossing the globe to London, Perth, Cape Town (twice), Blomfontein and Brisbane (twice), as well as to various New Zealand venues. In spite of the hardships of travel and enduring the challenges of their home city being devastated by the quakes, the team remarkably advanced to the Super final, losing a thriller 13-18, in Brisbane.
“When I look back, what we did was exceptional,” Blackadder said. “It’s a testament to the character and resilience of the team.” The positives that had come out of last season were that it had built resolve and determination, he said, and the leaders had gone on to the All Blacks and won the World Cup. “We’ve been through a hell of a lot.” As to this season, Blackadder said there was “a really good bubble and squeak’” in the side. The players were keen to once again play in front of their hometown fans at their new home, Rugby League Park, and to go one better – to win the Super competition for Christchurch.

Council gives early election thumbs down

Dignitaries to attend services
THE Christchurch City Council has confirmed that the Governor-General and the Prime Minister EARLY elections are not a goer for most Christchurch City councillors according to a survey conducted by will attend events to mark the first anniversary of Mainland Press. Cantabrians Unite for Democracy has called for Christchurch’s elected council to be dissolved the Christchurch earthquake on Wednesday, Feband fresh elections held in autumn. However, when Mainland Press asked the mayor and 12 councillors for their ruary 22. Mayor Bob Parker said the GovernorGeneral Lt Gen Sir Jerry Mateparae, Lady Janine opinion, eight responded with a firm ‘no,’ one was non-committal and four did not respond. Their answers were: Mateparae, the Prime Minister John Key and Mrs Bronagh Key would attend the service being held Cr Barry Corbett: Mayor Bob Parker: at Latimer Square and the Civic Memorial ServThe Government has appointed an observer to help ice being held at North Hagley Park. No, councillors should get on with the job they were get the council on track for the important work we put here to do. Govern the city, respect the process, have ahead of us. I think we should wait to see the respect the staff and be part of the solution, not the outcome of this move. problem.
SPECIAL
Deputy mayor Ngaire Button: No, absolutely not. What we need now more than ever is a unified council working with residents. An election now would be disruptive for our city and would further undermine public confidence. I know a lot of people are happy with the work of the council, especially in terms of the recovery. Elections will be held at the end of 2013. Cr Sue Wells: We are in a process with the Crown observer which is in part intended to rebuild trust between the elected members and senior management team. I am committed to constructive participation in that process.
Cr Claudia Reid: No. At a time when we should be totally focused on the recovery of the city, to call a halt and call an election would be even more debilitating for the majority of the city’s residents.
Cr Jamie Gough: I can’t help but see the irony in the radical suggestion of dissolving council as that in itself would be something incredibly undemocratic. The worst part is that it would be disastrous for Christchurch - many, many crucial months of the city’s recovery would be lost. We would never get them back and it would be catastrophic for our future.
Cr Aaron Keown: No way! That is so far from our country’s constitution. It’s offensive. We have elections every three years and for any group to ask for an election every time they don’t like a decision made by council or government then we would have elections every second week. A lot of people don’t realise that this protest and anti-council campaign has been organised by a well funded PR company. The council is on schedule to rebuild 40 years worth of infrastructure in just five years and I’m damn sure it’s going to happen! Cr Yani Johanson: I think a democratically elected council has to take charge and control of its own destiny. I certainly think that things need to change and I think we have to be given the opportunity to work that through so I just can’t see that if you have another set of elections you will get any different result than what you’ve got now. If you get the same people re-elected what have you actually changed? Nothing. Cr Tim Carter: I think we need to have a full discussion as a council as soon as we can get together and talk about the consistent messages that came from people in this protest.
Cr Sally Buck said she was too busy to respond to the question. Crs Helen Broughton, Jimmy Chen and Glenn Livingstone did not respond.
Diverse activities to mark Waitangi Day for 15 people will take place. The service will be attended by Commander Tony Millar, MNZM, RNZN officially representing the GovernorGeneral. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button will also attend. The day’s events will include a hangi, a waka journey on the Opara stream, and traditional games and activities. Entrance fee for the event is the normal
entrance fee for the museum. The hangi lunch is $10 for adults and $5 for children. In Christchurch, Riccarton House and Bush plans to combine the Christchurch Farmers Market and the Sunday Artisan Market to celebrate the occasion. Food and drink, fresh produce and local crafts will be on sale. Kaiapoi’s Trousselot Park is the venue for a family event on February 6. It will kick off with
the arrival of a procession at the park at 10am. Music and other entertainment will be provided until 2pm. Cultural art activities for the children, such as flax weaving, necklace making and the chance to be face-painted with a moko, a cultural performance from Ko Tane, and a re-enactment of a treaty signing will also be included in the day’s programme.

bought home to me the unfairness and duplicity around my own sacking. The total disenfranchising of Cantabrians in their rights to have a say led by the mayoral forum. This cartel led the charge and got support from those with vested interests. They had no mandate from their councils, much less from their communities. I hope the people of Canterbury have not forgotten what this was really about. I have always wished that more people would read the whole report and then they would see what a brutal, self-serving charade it was. So we have the Government again breathing down the city council’s neck and this time the
community baying for blood. I know first-hand how the reality of what’s really happening can be distorted by skewed reporting and a mendacious pack. But Wednesday told me quite a different story; here was our community, young and not so young, seasoned and first-time protesters. What struck me was the sincerity in their views and the anger directed at their elected representatives. I loved the humour of the billboards, the passion in the speeches, I loved the chanting. It was about walk the talk. So where to from here? Councillors, get into that room, hold hands and start singing Kumbaya - you are on notice.
From the editor THAT much admired word ‘democracy’ received a fair old hearing at the protest rally against the Christchurch City Council on Wednesday. The protest leader Mike Coleman, an Anglican minister, told a crowd of around 3500 that we did not have democracy in this city and for it to be restored Mayor Bob Parker and the council boss Tony Marryatt had to be booted out and new elections held. “We are standing up for democracy because it has not happened here effectively and with transparency, he said. Like Mr Parker, Mr Coleman has the gift of the gab. He proclaimed the protest group would be called ‘Cantabrians Unite for Democracy.’ “We want to see the city move forward, we don’t want to see developers leave and people leave, he said. “They’re going in droves. The city council is holding up the rebuild and not showing strong leadership. When his acolyte Peter Lynch came to speak, again it was on this theme of democracy. It had to be reclaimed, he said, John Key needed to help get democracy back in the city. There were a number of other speakers, one of them The Wizard who took up the plight of the elderly and asked, “Who bloody cares in the Government and council? Afterwards there came a chant of “Town clerk! Town clerk! from the crowd in

reference to Mr Marryatt, and, “Election now! Election now! Mr Marryatt was the subject of much complaint. To give “the invisible man a pay rise that was backdated to July was disgraceful, said one speaker. “He does not have a heart for Canterbury. “Send him back (to Hamilton) the bastard! someone shouted. Finally Mr Lynch asked: “Do you want Marryatt replaced? “Out! Out! Out! thundered the response. “Do you Christchurch residents want an early election? “New election! New election! The people had spoken. However, contrary to the view of Mr Coleman and others I don’t think democracy has disappeared from the city council. Blunders, a sense that a clique is running things, unfortunate events (elderly displaced from their damaged homes and still paying rates), the Marryatt pay debacle – all this and more have happened but it does not warrant dumping council. Yes if there had there been clear evidence of corruption, illegal activity or gross incompetence, but this is not the case. The big issue is rebuilding this city. Mayor Parker has to unite his council, establish openness and trust and get on with the job. Then we can give our verdict on them in October 2013 - democratically.

Selwyn primed to handle growth

THE ground work has been done and the Selwyn District Council is confident it’s ready to handle another major surge in growth. Council chief executive Paul Davey said despite being at the epicentre of the September 2010 earthquake, Selwyn was able to return to the “new normal quite quickly and was now expanding at a pace not seen since 2007, before the global financial crisis. It is still the fastest-growing district in New Zealand. Mayor Kelvin Coe said from December they started to hear about large numbers of people wanting to move to the district from Christchurch following the February 2011 quake but they couldn’t be sure exactly how many. “When we talk to real estate agents we’re talking about very strong enquiries, it’s hard to find properties. The council has experienced a flood of building consent applications; it granted 350 in the year to June 30, 2011, and has almost matched that number in the six months since. “The dilemma we have is what is natural growth and what’s associated with earthquakes in terms of relocations? Mr Davey said. They anticipate populations in Darfield, Prebbleton and Rolleston to double and Lincoln to triple by 2041, or even sooner, and have been working on strategies to accommodate it. “Rather than having to start now and do planning for growth we actually have the planning already in place, Mayor Coe said. Approval was granted last year for a potential 8800 residential sections in Rolleston and Lincoln over the next 20 to 30 years, a total of 822 hectares for homes and businesses. Construction started this month on the next $28million stage of the Pines II wastewater treatment plant, which will serve homes, business and industry to the equivalent of an extra 45,000 people with the capacity to expand up to 80,000. at Rolleston’s Izone, the country’s biggest industrial development was being investigated. Staff numbers in the council’s building and assets departments have doubled in the last decade. But with all this growth, what of the district’s soul? Community services manager Lesley Symington heads a department which was nonexistent five years ago, now she has 35 staff. She said Rolleston felt very soulless when she arrived but it had improved. The Selwyn Aquatic Centre is under construction in Rolleston where 30 hectares of land has been set aside for recreational activities. In Lincoln, a new event centre has already opened. Mr Davey saw the district’s role now as being to inspire confidence in Canterbury. Mayor Coe said while Christchurch needed to retain its rating base, Selwyn was an option for those who wanted to leave but didn’t want to go to Timaru, Dunedin or Nelson.

Claim Deadlines The Earthquake Commission has joined forces with insurance companies to speed up remaining assessments. Last year, EQC completed all 164,000 post-February full assessments. Joint assesments by EQC and insurers will be carried out on properties where there are signiďŹ cant differences between the respective earthquake damage assesments. Assessments will start in the Red Zone but move to other areas shortly after.

Land reports coming by April All initial assessments of land claims were completed by EQC’s engineers by 17 December 2011. Individual reports for each property are currently being prepared and checked. Reports now require additional aerial mapping data. Most customers with a land claim will have their initial land assessment reports by the end of April. Some properties may require more detailed assessments and we will contact those customers soon. INFRASTRUCTURE and social issues were key concerns raised by 70 eastern suburbs residents at a forum held in Wainoni ahead of the upcoming Burwood-Pegasus by-election. New Brighton resident Brian Sandle hasn’t decided which candidate would get his vote, but believed improving social facilities was vital for the area. “For people to get on with their lives, they need sporting facilities and places to relax, so saving QEII and Rawhiti Park is really important. “I also support the Avon River Park, so I’ll be thinking about these issues when I decide who to vote for. Saving QEII and reducing liquefaction dust were priorities for Avondale resident Jenny Irvine who had been living in the area for 45 years. “We need to draw people to the area and QEII is a wonderful asset for the community, so it’s definitely important to keep it here. “I’m also worried about the liquefaction dust. I think it’s dangerous to be breathing it in all the time and I wish that it could be cleaned up. Getting vital infrastructure, including sewage and water systems, repaired was important to orange-zoned Southshore resident Dorothy Batchelor, who is still using a chemical toilet. “Getting the sewage system fixed would make

TRANSFORMING the former St Albans swimming pool site from an overgrown space into a garden and labyrinth has seen the community reclaim the area, according to Edgeware Village Green. Village Green spokesperson Helen Ross said that the group had worked hard over the summer to ensure that the green space became a focal point for the community. Ms Ross said that when her group first started transforming the empty space, it was run down and used for prostitution and drinking parties. “We’ve been busy clearing weeds and constructing a new labyrinth over the past few months.
“It is always vital to have a place where everyone can come together and share in something positive. “It was neglected and overgrown. At night prostitutes would use the area and it wasn’t a nice place to visit, but now it is a safe, green space for the community. The group was assisted by two groups of student volunteers from the University of Canterbury and the United States. Ms Ross said Edgeware Village Green hoped to hold an opening event for the garden and labyrinth next weekend. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the people of St Albans to move forward together.

Reducing work stress through support
Older & Bolder joins Mainland Press
Martin Moore
OLDER & Bolder, a popular national lifestyle publication for the 50 plus age group, will be relaunched in March by its new owner, Christchurch’s only locally owned and operated media group, Mainland Press. It will be published in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with a targeted readership of over 160,000 people nationwide. Mainland Press managing director Pier Smulders said the company was delighted to be adding Older & Bolder to its stable of media products. “Originally a Christchurch publication which grew from its local roots to a nationwide presence, we look forward to providing a great product for our readers nationwide, and to provide our advertisers with a refreshed and exciting option for reaching their customers in this important age group. “Plans to expand and re-energise Older & Bolder are in place for this growing segment of the marketplace. We have identified that the over 50 demographic is growing, has disposable income, leisure time available and are increasingly becoming technology savvy.” Mainland Press publishes the Mainland Press newspaper, the Bay Harbour News, Best Motorbuys, Buy Sell & Exchange, CC Magazine and websites and is launching the Selwyn View newspaper on February 23. After the February 22 earthquake last year, CTV moved into the Mainland Press building and the two companies are working together in Christchurch as part of the city’s recovery efforts.
“They’re coping pretty well, but they are really tired. They’re not necessarily publicly advertising that because they really are people who are concerned about their client groups or service users, so they don’t want to say ‘we’re really tired’ because they want to help.” The causes of the stress varied, with improvised facilities and reduced resources putting workers in difficult situations. Other causes of stress were not being able to talk about their own problems and the feeling of not being able to offer as much help as was needed. “What upsets service workers most is when they don’t feel they
HUMAN service workers in Christchurch have been under a lot of pressure over the past year, but University of Canterbury social work and human services lecturer Associate Professor Kate van Heugten has found that there are steps organisations can take to help. Professor van Heugten has interviewed front-line workers and managers from human service organisations since October 2011 and said she noticed several trends. She found that prolonged stress was taking a toll on those tasked with helping others, but that they were often reluctant to tell others that they themselves were having trouble.
have the resources available to help their service users. Working long hours is hard, working with really distressing situations is hard, but what really gets people down is when they feel they can’t do as good a job as they would like to for the people that they service. That’s why they’re in that line of work; it’s not for the pay.” Many human service organisations had taken steps to support their employees and offer them the opportunity to talk about their experiences. She said it was important that management was seen to be making an effort to support staff. “Of course, it’s been hard for

AIR New Zealand’s chief executive Rob Fyfe announced his resignation on Tuesday. He will step down from the role on December 31 this year. Mr Fyfe has been with the company for almost a decade and was appointed chief executive in 2005. He said his departure date would coincide with the end of his term as chairman of Star Alliance and marks the completion of his four years as a board member of the International Air Transport Association. Company chairman John Palmer expects there would be significant international interest in the role and believes that there are some very strong candidates within Air New Zealand’s existing management team. He said the decision on Mr Fyfe’s replacement would probably be made in about six months. LAST SALE

Australia’s richest person stakes claim in Fairfax AUSTRALIAN mining mogul Gina Rinehart moved on Wednesday to increase her holding in Fairfax, the company which owns the Christchurch Press and Mail, from four percent to 15 percent. Brokers acting on her behalf had sought to buy an additional 9.9 percent of Fairfax for $247 million. This would make her the media group’s largest single shareholder. Fairfax newspapers include the Australian Financial Review, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Melbourne Age. Ms Rinehart also holds a 10 percent stake in Channel Ten which is Australia’s third-largest television network.

MAINLAND PRESS
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 3 2012
It’s show time
F
ebruary is here and it’s only weeks un l this year’s Ellerslie Flower Show opens its gates. To say I am excited is a total understatement; jumping with joy, running on the spot, hyped up, and ready for ac on sort of covers it. From talking to a number of the designers last week, it seems that the show will be a blooming riot of colour, brimming with thought-provoking garden ideas, quirky themes, and most of all, fun. I find myself humming the Muppets’ tune, “It’s me to put on makeup, it’s me to...” That’s how excited I am. It’s not just because of the gardens, which are coming together so well, or the thousand hanging baskets in full bloom, or plethora of weird and wacky plants that will be there. It’s the people. I just love seeing, mee ng, and watching other gardeners also enjoying my passion, obsession in my garden city. But I need some help in one area in par cular. Ellerslie has a number of exhibitors designing at the show who need somewhere to stay. Many of these designers and helpers do their gardens on a shoestring budget and spend all their money on the exhibit rather than themselves. For a few weeks, while they set up their gardens, while the show is open and for a day or two while they clean up, they
need somewhere to lay their weary heads. Anything would be greatly appreciated. If you only have room for a night or two, that’s fine; we just need somewhere. I think it will be fun having a different connec on to the show, too, almost an insider’s perspec ve. Not only may you get a heads up on what’s going on at the show, but I am sure we can find loyal Mainland Press readers who can help us with ckets. What’s more is you may get the inside running on the bargains to be had once the show is over. Most designers sell off their plants, statues, bark, pavers, you name it, at the end of the show to cover some costs and because it’s such a hassle to take it home. If you can help, please let me know through rachelvogan@ gmail.com or 021 632 342. Last week, exhibitors got together for the last designer exhibitor evening before the show opens. Energy was high, the room was packed, with most being eager to glean any last ps to help them complete their designs. I spoke to the exhibitors from a judge’s point of view as I have been judging at the show for 11 years (yes, even when it was s ll in Auckland). The main points I covered this me related to finishing off their exhibit;

everything has to be me culous. No allowances will be made by the judges for shoddy workmanship, unhealthy plants, or poorly executed designs. This is an interna onal Rachel Vogan The Happy Gardener event. The judging criteria is based on the Bri sh Royal Hor cultural Society system (www.rhs.org.uk), which is par cularly reassuring when you are on a panel of interna onal judges who use this system all over the world. The best advice I think every exhibitor should take is to get a fresh pair of eyes to look at your garden or design before you finish it off. It’s amazing what someone new may see, or not see for that ma er, that can make a difference. Tickets for the show can be bought online at www.ellerslieflowershow.co.nz, at Ticketek on 0800 Ticketek (0800 842 538), Christchurch City Council Service Centres, Ballantynes, Oderings - Stourbridge Street, and Terra viva Garden Centre Wairakei Road.

Win win win MAINLAND PRESS has an exclusive behind-the-scenes double pass to the opening of The Ellerslie Interna onal Flower Show where you will be able to look at the show from a judge’s point of view, meet and greet some of the leading designers, and receive ckets to the gala opening, which you cannot purchase as they are by invita on only. You will also receive two double any day ckets to the show to enable you to go back at your leisure. The whole package is valued at $750. Simply tell me why you would like to win. Thinking outside the lunchbox
W
ith the start of the school year, 5+ A Day has fun, fresh ideas to get Mums and Dads thinking outside the square when it comes to the kids’ lunches. 5+ A Day advocate and leading nutri onist, Claire Turnbull, who runs Mission Nutri on and is the nutri onist for Healthy Food Guide Magazine, says that school lunches provide a great opportunity to work more fruit and vegetables into your child’s diet, giving them a boost of energy and the nutrients they need to get the most out of their learning day. Claire suggests that one great way to get kids to eat more fruit and vege is by making them look fun and involving children in the process of preparing lunches. “While kids may be reluctant to eat whole pieces of fruit, they love food they can eat with their fingers,” says Claire. “Choose colourful fruit and vegetables and chop them up into small bite-sized pieces that can be stored in small containers or slipped into sandwiches and wraps. “Incorpora ng fruit and veges into lunches doesn’t need to be a covert opera on,” adds Claire. “Kids love the opportunity to help Mum and Dad in the kitchen and they are more likely to eat lunches they have helped make themselves. It’s also a great way to teach kids how to make healthy choices.” Claire also recommends introducing children to new foods at home first before including them in their lunchbox. “Children are less likely to eat food that is foreign to them,” says Claire. “By including new food types and styles in family meals first, children are more likely to eat them when they see it in their school lunches.” Here are five fun, tasty, and healthy lunchbox ideas that will go some way to achieving 5+ servings of fruit and veges during the school day:

Bringing back beauty with bellydance
W
omen and girls, from five to over 65, have brought beauty into their lives with Abbraccia Bellydance. Abbraccia, Italian for “embrace”, celebrates the gorgeousness and diversity of women, and the power of femininity, says Abbraccia director Paige Adamson. “All women are able to learn bellydance. There is no specific body type or age, and you don’t need a partner,” says Paige, who has been dancing for 14 years and has performed at various venues and events. But teaching the intricate art of Egyp an Bellydance, and helping women and girls feel empowered through dance, is also her passion, one supported by her mentor Monique Feron, founder of Abbraccia Bellydance in Auckland. “2011 was a tough year for us all. However, through the many venue changes and disrup ons, we kept dancing, learning, and laughing. It’s really wonderful to see students come into their own, suppor ng each other and having fun,” says Paige. Paige teaches adults, from beginners to advanced, as well as privately, hen’s nights,
dance workshops, and also in schools and professional organisa ons. Benefits of regular dancing include increased fitness and body confidence, a li in mood, and a sense of accomplishment in learning new skill. You also get to wear sparkles and beads for glamour and glitz. Baring your belly is not required; students wear comfortable clothes for classes. The children’s classes, Bellyfairies, Bellybu erflies, and Bellybu ons, embody colour, joy, and rhythm. The classes focus on learning the basics and keeping it fun and flowing, with a chance to perform. The seven-week dancing term, for both children and adult classes, starts on Monday, February 20. Paige is also taking a Veil Dance Workshop on Friday, March 23 at 6.30pm, combining wine, chocolate, and a saucy rou ne to contemporary music for absolute beginners. Contact Paige at 328 8883/021 999 848 paige.bellydance@gmail.com to book your place today. Classes are based at Ly elton West School, 41 Voelas Road, Ly elton.

Plenty of muscle with Grand Cherokee Bob Nettleton
THE stand out feature of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is its smooth, but potent, V6 turbo diesel. Whether it is enough to move buyers to shift into the Grand Cherokee camp could prove challenging. Jeep realised this and added an aggressively priced Laredo model to the line up, with the cheapest selling for just $64,990. Its new 177kw V6 turbo diesel is designed and built by Italian diesel engine maker VM. It is smooth, responsive, and quick once in stride, and effortlessly carves up the kilometres on a long trip. Use of cruise control is strongly recommended to stay on the speed limit. Engine noise levels are at the lower end of the six-cylinder diesel spectrum. This motor more than matches its V6 and V8 petrol-powered siblings and leaves a lasting impression. The only chink I saw was some turbo lag. When accelerating hard from a standing start, there was an occasional moment of hesitation before the engine kicked into serious action. A five-speed automatic gearbox expertly manages gear changes. It was hard to fault its smoothness and intuitive gear shifting. The set up is managed by Jeep’s proven Quadra-Drive

AUCKLAND midget car racer Shane O’Connor upstaged the much-hyped pairing of Jerry Coons Jr and Michael Pickens at AmPro Tools Woodford Glen Speedway in round two of the Triple Crown series on Saturday night. Coons Jr is an American superstar, who has won almost everything there is to win in the sport, while Pickens is the current and fourtime national champion. Coons Jr had pipped Pickens the night before at Ruapuna Speedway in round one, so a similar result had been predicted. As expected, the two qualified first and second for the Value Cars 35-lap feature, a race which delivered on all expectations with drama from the outset. Coons Jr was sent to the rear of the field for making contact with Pickens who went on to lead the race until, with three laps to
