Let’s get the eastern arsonists Gina McKenzie

COMMUNITY action could help solve a spate of eastern suburbs arson attacks, according to Fire Service Christchurch area commander Jon Graham. The series of arson attacks over the past three weekends razed the landmark 52-year-old Leander Building at Kerrs Reach in Avonside Drive and damaged Aranui High School, Avondale Primary and Aranui Kids First Kindergarten. The attacks stepped up a notch at the weekend with seven fires lit in the early hours of Saturday morning in Aldershot and Portsmouth streets and Ben Rarere Avenue in Aranui. Four of the fires were lit at properties and at

two of the properties people were asleep inside their houses at the time. The residents escaped uninjured but the escalation in the arson attacks had alarmed Mr Graham. “We’re very concerned that these attacks are creeping into properties while residents are asleep. “It’s gone too far and needs to be stopped. Mr Graham hoped Wainoni and Avonside residents would be able to provide further information. “People are our eyes and ears and even a small detail such as seeing an unfamiliar person in their street could provide a breakthrough.

“Something that seems insignificant be very important so I would encourage people in the area to report anything suspicious. Overgrown vegetation and abandoned houses in the eastern suburbs provided fuel for arson attacks and Mr Graham said residents needed to monitor vegetation growth. “People need to be aware that even if they don’t live in their house anymore if they still own the property they are responsible for keeping vegetation under control. “If the property is owned by Cera then the council will take care of the vegetation. Mr Graham said the fire service still had a very active presence in the eastern suburbs,

even in those areas with large sections of empty houses. “If someone calls the fire service we will aim to be there within six minutes so we are still very much a part of eastern Christchurch. Mr Graham said the fire service was still carrying out an ongoing investigation into the arson attacks in conjunction with the police. “We are analysing the scenes of the fires and the results will contribute to the investigation. If anyone has any information regarding the arson attacks or has noticed any suspicious activity in the Wainoni, Aranui or Avonside areas please contact the Christchurch central police on 363 7400.

AFTER the Ellerslie International Flower Show was wiped out by last year’s earthquake, organisers believe this year’s show, which opened yesterday at North Hagley Park, will be “bigger and better.” Show managing director Dave Mee said he felt the show would be among the best in its 16-year history. He credited the designers for their resilience after the devastation wrought on last year’s event. “Many designers had already been on site for eight days and their exhibits were toppled. “Some designers are back with gardens they were creating last year, while others have created a new design to respond to the changing environment and to look to the future. “It’s fantastic to see more than a quarter of a million plants on display with an emphasis on colour and flowers.” Paul Roper-Gee, of Beca, received a gold medal for his garden entitled Max’s Pipe Dream which was a replica of the garden he had half-finished before the earthquake struck. Mr Gee, a first-time exhibitor from Shirley, said his courtyard garden paid tribute to

“Flossie”, an adorable 2 ½ year old black Labrador/Huntaway cross was referred to Dr Steve Heap as she had an unusual looking right eye for about 2 weeks. The referring vet noticed the pupil colour was different from a distance however her sight was alright and her eye otherwise comfortable.

Electricians, Plumbers, Auto Repairs, Builders, Pet Care, Pest Control & more

On clinical exam the front part of her right eye (the anterior chamber) seemed normal, but the back part of the eye ( posterior chamber) had a large, fleshy, pale, irregular and vascular mass attached. The optic disc at the back of the eye looked normal, as did the medial aspect of the retina. Dr Catherine Morganti confirmed via ultrasound that in fact there was a 1.2cm x 0.8cm solid mass in the posterior chamber of the right eye. After consultation with the owner, it was decided the best plan of action was for Flossie to undergo surgery immediately and have the eye taken out (enucleated). The eye would then be sent away to the laboratory for histopathology. Prior to surgery, Steve xrayed Flossie’s chest to make sure there was no visual evidence of tumour spread. He also performed pre-anaesthetic blood testing to make sure the liver and kidney function were normal and she able to withstand a 1-2 hour anaesthetic. Everything checked out fine, so she was sedated, placed on intravenous fluids and then prepared for surgery. Steve had to remove the eye in entirety and the tumour was very easy to see. He then submitted the eye for histopathology to our local laboratory so we could find out what we were dealing with. Flossie woke up gently on a warmed stretcher tramoline. She was the perfect patient under anaesthetic and maintained a great blood pressure of 100mmHg throughout the surgery. She was discharged later that evening on antibiotics, anti inflammatory/pain relief medication and a head collar to prevent her rubbing at her eye. So far Lola has met her brother Jade and sister Flossie. You’d swear she knew they were her family. They all look and behave so similarly. Ocular tumours are not common. If you observe any difference in your pets eyes, seek vet advice immediately. All eye problems are better dealt with early.

FITZGERALD MOTORS Chris Tobin CHRISTCHURCH man Henry Sunderland’s idea of planting flowers in cones proved a success in the city during the earthquake commemoration on February 22, and now it’s Japan’s turn. Mr Sunderland, an art programme leader at the Canterbury Polytechnic Institute of Technology, said one of his former students, Midori Saito, lived in Sendai, Japan, the capital city of Miyagi prefecture, which suffered catastrophic damage after a magnitude 9.0 offshore earthquake triggered a tsunami on March 11, 2011. “She asked if we would support Sendai on March 11, by spreading the same idea in Japan. I had the message translated into Japanese,” he said. “A number of people have let it fly (the cartoon) round Japan and we’ll see where it goes.” Mr Sunderland has placed the updated

PHONE 03 349 7813 cartoon on his Facebook page. His Christchurch commemoration cartoon depicted himself - the latest version included Ms Saito. A Flowers for Japan group has been set up on Facebook where people can post quake cone photos and messages that would be sent to Japan. The words on the above cartoon translated are: To the citizens of Japan and Sendai We send love from Christchurch, New Zealand. Place a flower in a road cone on 11th March 2012. To remember all those who lost their lives, those who lost loved ones, and those whose lives will never again be the same. Share this idea and join us. Let’s help the world remember.

Sustainable fashion going on show THE University of Canterbury and the Design and Arts College of New Zealand are working together to present Eco Runway, a fashion show that is part of Waste Watchers Week, a series of events to mark the launch of the university’s waste education programme, Waste Watchers. “Sustainable fashion has moved past turning trash bags into trousers,” Eco Runway organiser Alicia Sudden said. “It now encapsulates a whole world of fashion from second-hand shops to up-cycling and designers’ labels. Eco Runway is a showcase of all of this.” Eco Runway will be MC’d by recent winner of the Young New Zealander of the Year award, Sam Johnson, the man behind the Student Volunteer Army who is also committed to a

greener future. The collections are drawn from a number of New Zealand designers and shops, including charity stores such as The Salvation Army, Nurse Maude, and Northcity Opshop. “Second-hand clothing is such an underrated aspect of fashion. The vintage pieces you can find there need to be shown off,” Ms Sudden said. “We are also really excited to be working with the Design and Arts College and to give them a chance to showcase their up-and-coming fashion designers and make-up artists.” The Design and Arts College lost their Art Deco building in the February 22, 2011 earthquake.

SOME of the most enthusiastic advocates for rebuilding the shattered husk of what was ChristChurch Cathedral come from a range of backgrounds. Among them are Cr Aaron Keown who declares he will chain himself to the cathedral should demolition go ahead, which would be worth seeing, and The Wizard who says pulling down the cathedral would be an act of barbarism. A significant number are not Anglicans, non-churchgoers, non-Christians and yet they want the old cathedral retained and rebuilt. They see the old cathedral as a thing of rare beauty and as probably the greatest symbol of Christchurch under which the dramas and heartaches of this city’s life have been played out for generation upon generation. They see it too as an attraction for visitors to our city. That is commendable.

Yet it has to be noted that cathedrals are not built to be admired for their aesthetic charm necessarily, nor to be symbols or icons, or tourist attractions. Cathedrals are built to be houses of worship and prayer. That is why, even given its location in the heart of the city, the fate of ChristChurch Cathedral rests with the Anglican diocese and its boss, Bishop Victoria Matthews, the owners of the building and the land upon which it stands. They have to make the best decision, first and foremost, for their faith community. Not us. Not for the wider community although that assuredly has to play a part. If the decision has been to demolish, or ‘deconstruct’, so be it. All we can hope is that whatever is built on the site mirrors what went before…. and with a towering (safe) main spire.

ELEVEN Christchurch schools will be able to connect to the ultra-fast broadband (UFB) network this year, the Christchurch City Council-owned company, Enable, says. This will bring the total number of Christchurch schools with access to UFB services to 71, reinforcing the city’s national leadership in delivering technology-based education. “Since our inception in 2007, we have recognised the education advantages that fibrebased broadband can provide our children, Enable CEO Steve Fuller said. “Our partnership with the Crown, through the UFB project, means we can quickly expand the number of schools with access to fibre. This means we can achieve our vision of having all schools in Christchurch and centres in Waimakariri and Selwyn District connected to our network within three years. More schools to have access to UFB will be named in the next few months. Christchurch schools that will receive fibre in 2012 are Ferndale School, Gilberthorpe School, Halswell Residential College, Halswell School, Hornby Primary School, Lyttelton Main School, Oaklands School, Roydvale Primary School, Somerfield School, St Michael’s Church School and Cathedral Grammar School. Aidanfield Christian School will also be connected to fibre broadband this year, which was announced by Enable in November.

Food bank needs funding to meet demand Christine de Felice

0800 HUNGRY, the Bromley-based food bank, needs more funding to grow its service, CEO Kerry Bensemann says. Mr Bensemann set up the organisation in 2001 and in the first year, it packed and dispensed around 11,300 food parcels to Canterbury families in need. In the first five weeks after the February 22 earthquake, 6500 food parcels were dispensed to residents from Southshore to Parklands through 0800 Hungry. The demand for food parcels throughout New Zealand has grown significantly over the last decade. According to a survey of two charities, the Salvation Army and City Mission, which was carried out last year, the number rose from 3359 given out in 2001 to 2002 to 9431 in 2010 to 2011. At 0800 Hungry, the number of food parcels dispensed has remained fairly constant since the resource centre, or mule ministry, as Mr Bensemann likes to call it, was set up, though there was a peak in 2007. Volunteers currently packed and dispensed around 300 food parcels a week, he said. “If the 0800 hungry food ministry is to grow to meet the

demand now being placed on it, it will require a significant growth in base funding.” A large proportion of the warehouse rental is provided from the Southern Trust and Mainland Foundation, with individuals also providing donations. The other source of funding was the sale of cardboard banana boxes, which were collected from supermarkets and on-sold, he said. Manufacturers donated the food and grocery items. The food parcels were dispensed though church groups and by 0800 Hungry volunteers. There was no charge for the parcels, but recipients were asked to donate $5 to help with running expenses. For the first nine years, it was only $2. Mr Bensemann said he would like people to sponsor 0800 Hungry as they do World Vision children, for example. He said the organisation wasn’t just about providing food for people in need. People say they want a pool, but not next to their house.” Meanwhile, demand for swimming lessons in council pools was high, but Mr Filsell said spaces were still available if people were prepared to be flexible. “In some cases there may be difficulties, but there are spaces.” He said council pools that had managed to remain open were the busiest they had ever been. Swim Canterbury president Wayne Rollinson said his organisation wanted a 50m pool available as soon as possible. Six clubs, with between 500 and 600 members, operated in Christchurch and he said that since the earthquakes, numbers had dropped by 20 per cent.

INSURANCE issues remain to be sorted out before options regarding the quake-damaged QEII sports complex can be placed before the Christchurch City Council. The council’s recreation and sports manager John Filsell said they were still working with insurers and QEII would remain closed “indefinitely”. “I think it is still months away. I can understand people’s frustration, but we’ve got the opportunity to do it well.” He said he did not have any expectations as to how long the process would take. Among options being considered were rebuilding on the QEII site or relocating into the central city. “We’ve been collating feedback. TV show tour recalls golden times

Friday farewell for the Godwits

Tania Butterfield

CHRISTCHURCH residents will again bid farewell to their winged visitors, the Godwits, which are due to take flight on an 11-thousand kilometre journey to their breeding grounds in Alaska. The annual Farewell to the Godwits event is taking place tomorrow at Southshore Spit Reserve, South New Brighton at 5.30pm. Organisers said it would be a brief, but informative, ceremony. The bar-tailed Godwits, also called kuaua, arrive each September, having made the flight from Alaska to New Zealand to escape the northern winter. They spend the summer feeding and resting at the Avon-Heathcote Estuary (Ihutai) before their return trip, which takes several weeks, with stopovers around China’s Yellow Sea, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan, before the homerun crossing of the Bering Sea to Alaska.

FAVOURITE CARD GAMES AT A SPECIAL PRICE

There was concern for the Godwits’ safety after one of them was found dead, but evidence suggests that it is a lone occurrence and that it succumbed to either natural causes or predation and not to the avian botulism that is suspected of causing over 4000 bird deaths this summer. There are no fears that the Godwits will spread any illness on their travels, as the disease is contracted via feeding and is not contagious. “Farewell to the Godwits is one of the most unique and beautiful events on the summer calendar, and although you’ll have the chance to get up close to the birds, we recommend bringing some binoculars,” Christchurch City Council marketing unit manager Richard Stokes said. “You can also enjoy our free sausage sizzle, but for the birds’ sake, we’re asking you to please leave your dogs at home,” Mr Stokes said.

Nearing 10,000 full repairs completed

We’re now completing 80 homes a day And the run rate is increasing The repair programme is building momentum. Our project teams and the independent contractors they work with have done 60,000 repairs, large and small, so far. A lot of that was urgent work to deal with the impact of aftershocks. 10,000 full-scope repairs have also been completed, and another 16,000 have planning or physical repair work under way. The past year was also about building the resources to get the job done. We now have 20 Hubs in

earthquake affected communities, more than 1,000 contracting firms and 500 project management staff co-ordinating the work. About 11,000 people – contractors and staff – have been inducted to the programme at this point. Our client EQC has set us a tough target – to finish 80 percent of the estimated 100,000 homes in the repair programme by the end of 2014. It’s not going to be easy, but we Cantabrians are a determined bunch.

EQC Update

! ! With an average of 80 home repairs completed per day, the Canterbury Home Repair Programme is well underway. Over 10,000 full repairs have been completed to-date and as at 28th February, 16,920 are currently being scoped, priced or are under construction. Our priority is for repairs over $50,000 to be completed by June 2013.

Eighty percent of all repairs will be completed by the end of 2014. Priority will also be given to the vulnerable in the community. Remember, Fletcher EQC will contact you when they are ready to start work on your home. Home owners who’s houses are being repaired by Fletcher EQR will be contacted by their local hub to arrange a scoping meeting.

EQC has completed most of its assessments in the residential white-zone areas of the Port Hills. EQC Canterbury Event Manager, Reid Stiven, says any properties that remain to be assessed will most certainly have Council section 124 notices on them. “Our teams have mostly ďŹ nished assessments in the Port Hills area. We have been running a programme that allows us to complete the initial assessment on most homes with section 124 notices. Due to the notices, there is only so far we can take these claims, but at least people know that we have pushed them as far as they can go in the system.â€? Mr Stiven says that although there are many issues in the Port Hills area, settling claims is a relatively straight forward 4-5 step process for EQC. This is unlike some of the at areas in the east of the city where the scale of the liquefaction damage and continuing seismic activity pose many ongoing problems. “The Port Hills issues are bread and butter for us in terms of settlement. Rock-fall, cliffcollapse and landslides are issues that we deal with every year around New Zealand.

Last month we advised that geotechnical assessment for the building claims on TC3 properties with foundation damage begins this month. The assessment, which involves on-site testing and offsite geotechnical analysis, is to get the foundation repair/ replacement exactly right, and is a Department of Building and Housing requirement.

“Where there are no issues with life-risk, Council notices have been removed and the land is zoned Green then we are in a good position to move forward and settle with homeowners. “People do however need to be aware of a few issues around land, particularly retaining walls. The Earthquake Commission Act provides indemnity cover for retaining walls, not replacement cover. This means EQC pays out the value of the wall when it was damaged – not the cost of building a brand new retaining wall or the total current cost of the wall.

The assessment is needed for any repair or rebuild to foundations, regardless of whether the house claim is being managed by EQC or a private insurer. EQC will contact homeowners before inspections begin so you can allow us access, keep pets secure, etc.

EQC has a new fact sheet on claims settlement, explaining how the process of allocating damage across claims (what we refer to as “apportionment) affects your claim, and why it is needed. Visit canterbury.eqc.govt.nz to see the fact sheet.

Recycling initiative reduces tip overload Christine de Felice

FOLLOWING the earthquakes, Canterbury woman Carol Stevens became very upset at the piles of demolition material she saw dumped in paddocks and other locations around urban and rural areas of the city. “It became quite an issue for me, and it shows at the tip face, she says. After advertising for insulation material for her own home, Ms Stevens was contacted by Ross Bridson of demolition company D Construction. The two talked about what was happening at the tip and found they were of one mind concerning the volume of reusable materials that was being dumped. “We felt quite pessimistic about it and started thinking about what we could do, Ms Stevens said. “Hence, Recover Earth was born. Through this recycling initiative, materials removed from demolition sites are made available for people to reuse. The process is facilitated by Smith Crane & Construction, with sub-contractor D Construction carrying out the demolition work. Ms Stevens is advised what has been removed from demolition sites. Individuals and organisations needing items email Recover Earth with a “wish list and when any of these items become available, Ms Stevens lets them know when and where they can pick the items up. “The main objective is for the materials not to go to the dump. If they do, it will be a huge problem for future generations. The items are available for schools, community groups, charity organisations and individuals – anyone who needs them, no matter where they are located. “As far as I’m concerned, this earthquake has affected everyone in New Zealand. The

whole country is helping and we would like to say ‘thank you’ and get things out to as many people as possible. The email address to request items is recover-earth@live.com. There is no charge for items, but recipients are welcome to make a donation to charity. Recover Earth, which is run by Ms Stevens and a handful of volunteers, has recently moved into premises on the corner of Fitzgerald Avenue and Leeds Street. They were offered rent-free by Clive Wentworth, who operates a car-grooming business on the same site.

Infrastructure Rebuild Team

How is SCIRT tackling the rebuild?

SCIRT’s prioritisation process Operational prioritisation

SCIRT is charged with repairing the city’s vital ‘horizontal infrastructure’ – that’s our roads and underground pipes. This task is one of the largest and most complex civil engineering programmes of work

CDHB office opens in CBD MORE than a year after losing their former Chester Street premises to the February 22 earthquake, Community and Public Health, a division of the Canterbury District Health Board, moved into offices in Christchurch’s Central Business District last week. The new premises, at 310 Manchester Street, have been converted from retail and warehouse space into a permanent open plan office capable of supporting 100 staff. Evon Currie, Community and Public Health general manager, said the opening sent a strong message to the people of Canterbury. “It should send a powerful signal to the people of Christchurch that real progress is being made in the rebuild of our city.

ELECTRONIC organs producing a big sound and classic cars are all the go out Halswell way. Retired engineer Ray Drury, 77, has built a large-scale shed on his Whincops Road property to house a growing collection of classic and vintage cars. From that, he has also created a venue for his other great love, organ music. For much of the time, the cars are kept in the shed, but when an organ show is planned, out go the Buicks, Studebakers and voila! A music hall, the Drury Lane Theatre, is created. Since starting shows five or six years ago, Mr Drury has held about 20 at the venue, all to raise money for charity. “It’s fun and Christchurch has been very good to us, and we like to share what we’ve got, he said.

His wife Nancy handled all the public relations for the shows and he also called on the services of well-known musician Richard Hore to play when required. The organ used for the shows was an Allen from Pennsylvania, which Mr Drury paid $130,000 for last year. He intended to buy a Wurlitzer organ. Mr Hore said he was thrilled to be given the chance to play the Allen organ. “To use the words of Stevie Wonder, ‘it’s a dream machine.’ It’s a totally amazing sound. Mr Drury has brought several organists from around the world to perform at his rural venue. The latest will be Chris Powell, from Blackpool, England, who will give a show on March 16. Proceeds will go to Cholmondeley Home.

A triumph for car lovers Road machine: Organising committee member John Jones shows off his Triumph TR car at the TR Register New Zealand’s annual national weekend, which was held in Wigram from Thursday to Sunday. The event is held in a different city or town each year. This year’s rally in Christchurch was their biggest ever, with 69 of the classic British sports cars on show. Mr Jones said that following the earthquakes of the past 18 months, organisers were unsure whether the event would continue. “We’ve had a lot of heartaches after the earthquakes, but we pressed on and thankfully a lot of people have come,” he said. Photo: Tom Doudney

Parking pressure in Hornby Samantha Early THE influx of workers into Hornby following last February’s earthquake has led to a squeeze in parking around the suburb’s commercial area. Wigram Residents’ Association secretary and treasurer Gina Bolton said it was becoming difficult for residents to park their own cars on the road and access local kindergartens, doctors and schools. “There are a lot more businesses around since the quakes, so employees are parking in the streets as well as the shoppers,” she said. Roads becoming congested included Main South Road, Goulding Avenue, Tower Street, Brynley St, Aymes Rd, and Sparks Rd. The Riccarton Wigram Community Board has asked Christchurch City Council staff for a report on the situation and suggestions

Quick Stop Liquor

to improve it. Board chairman Mike Mora said a lot of businesses had moved to Waterloo and Carmen roads. “There is quite a big change in Hornby and we welcome that change, but we just want to make the parking suit the people, the shoppers and the businesses. We want to give everybody a fair go.” Mr Mora said there was no deadline for the staff investigation. “Because of the amount of consultation that’s going to be needed and evaluation of the parking situation at present, it will probably take a bit of time.” He said he actually wanted to limit the time people could park in key locations, but he didn’t want parking meters installed. The area is set to get busier with the Hub Hornby mall expanding by 5000 square

metres and the Hornby Workingmen’s Club planning to use some of its land for commercial buildings. The Hub centre manager Jason Marsden said the mall had 650 car parks at the moment, plus an area that had been hired for staff. Mr Marsden could not say how many spaces they would have after the expansion; however they were adding two levels and aimed to bring all staff parking back on site. “But some people prefer to park on the street. I would hope we’re not seeing too many of our staff park in front of residential homes, but I guess there’s always that possibility.” Ms Bolton welcomed the council’s investigation. “It’s a move in the right direction.”

Decision to leave board Board candidate announced difficult, says Thorley A CASHMERE resident has been the first to put their hand up to contest the Spreydon Heathcote Community Board by-election. Dr Helene Mautner has been selected as the candidate for The People’s Choice (formerly Christchurch 2021) party. The People’s Choice chair Paul McMahon said Dr Mautner had a history of involvement in her community and would make an excellent community board member. “She is committed to important civic values of transparency, democratic process and public service that this city could use more of, Mr McMahon said. Dr Mautner has been a resident of Cashmere

FORMER Spreydon Heathcote Community Board member Mike Thorley says he’s really sorry for leaving, but he had to do what’s best for his young family. His resignation followed a difficult year for him, so they moved to Perth, Western Australia, to have a break and make a new start. He is now working as a water scientist in the mining sector. Mr Thorley said the quakes were minor on the family’s plate last year, in which his wife Briar’s mother died of cancer, his twoyear-old son Kever was burnt by spilling hot tea on himself, and their daughter Heather was born with a heart defect, which required surgery at Auckland’s Starship Hospital. The children had since recovered. Mr Thorley left his job at Environment Canterbury and took leave from the community board last October to explore his options. In January, he decided to resign so someone else could commit to the position. “My wholehearted apologies go out to the people; they are surely better served by someone who’s there. He considered flying back to Christchurch every couple of weeks for board meetings. He is keen to return to Christchurch in the future. A by-election is being held to fill Mr Thorley’s seat, with postal voting papers being sent out from April 18 and voters having until midday on Friday, May 11 to return them. Nominations are open until midday on Thursday, March 22.

for more than 25 years, has worked as a teacher, been president of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women and has recently completed a doctorate on communication disorders at the University of Canterbury. She has also worked on environmental programmes for the Christchurch City Council, including waste minimisation in schools and target zero waste. “This is a really important time for Christchurch and I believe that I have the experience and skills to make a really positive contribution to the Spreydon-Heathcote ward, Dr Mautner said.

Southern landscape draws painter Gina McKenzie AFTER spending five years in Wellington, artist Anne Jean has returned to Christchurch to take up a PhD in landscape and abstract painting and to reconnect with the South Island landscapes that inspire her artwork. Ms Jean, an Australian who met her husband Gerard Murphy in Christchurch, expected to leave the city for just two years but became immersed in Wellington’s art scene after opening the Blackmore and Jean Gallery in Shelly Bay and teaching at the Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity. “Wellington was wonderful but I’m really happy to be back here in Christchurch. “I love tramping and the natural landscapes of the South Island provide the inspiration for many of my landscape works. Ms Jean’s Cashmere home contained a new studio that she hoped would become a meeting space for Christchurch artists. “After the difficult times artists have faced New start: Former Spreydon Heathcote Community in Christchurch over the last year I hope to Board member Mike Thorley, pictured holding offer a space to network and work with other daughter Heather, 9 months, with son Kever, 2, and likeminded people. daughter Maddison, 8, is sorry to leave the board but “Artists are very creative in their use of space says he had to do the best by his family Photo: Supplied. so I have no doubt that the local art scene will come back together. Ms Jean was studying at Australian National University in Canberra and hoped to arrange funding for New Zealand landscape painters to visit Australia. “It would be fantastic if we could get a group

Hornby High proud of NCEA achievements DESPITE earthquakes and aftershocks, snowstorms and rugby world cup distractions last year, Hornby High School is celebrating its best ever National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) results since the secondary school qualifications system was introduced a decade ago. Principal Richard Edmundson said the school’s board of trustees, staff and students were delighted with the grades gained. Mr Edmundson said at NCEA levels one and three (years 11 and 13), the school’s results were above the national average. “There is so much good news in our results, it is difficult to know where to start!” he said. He said at year 11, almost 80 per cent of students were awarded level one NCEA, with half gaining more than 100 credits. Thirteen students gained level one NCEA with merit more than 50 credits at the merit level. Three students, Larissa Banks, Landie Blair, and Nathan Ferguson, gained level one NCEA with excellence, more than 50 credits at excellence, and each of them gained

more than 100 merit and excellence credits combined. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) introduced subject merit and excellence endorsement in 2011, which students can earn by having at least 14 credits at merit or excellence in a particular subject. At Hornby High School, there were 15 excellence and 76 merit subject endorsements across all levels. “Subject endorsement has been a great motivator for our students,” Mr Edmundson said. “Well done, NZQA, for this new initiative.” He said the level three results were equally as fantastic. Eighty per cent of students passed and 75 per cent gained University Entrance, both rates above the national average. Mr Edmundson said 2011 was a tough year, with many students and staff having challenging post-earthquake circumstances in their homes and personal lives, let alone the lost school time. “The whole school community is delighted that the High achievers: Hornby High School students Nathan Ferguson, Larissa hard, focussed work translated into these stunning results, Banks and Landie Blair who all gained Level 1 NCEA endorsed with particularly all those merits and excellences, and we look excellence, are congratulated by principal Richard Edmundson. forward to 2012.”

Pollution warning for city painters HOMEOWNERS and painters around Christchurch are being urged by Environment Canterbury (ECan) to do the right thing when they clean paintbrushes or dispose of leftover paint to avoid polluting local streams and rivers. There are more than 400 waterways which join in to the Avon and Heathcote rivers and anything flowing through gutters and stormwater drains goes untreated directly in to them. ECan director of resource management Kim Drummond said small discharges from hundreds of households could poison the streams that feed Christchurch’s two main rivers. “Thousands of houses are being painted as part of the Christchurch rebuild and it’s important to tackle this issue now and ensure our local waterways are protected as much as possible. “The chemicals in paint and the solvents used to clean paintbrushes can be toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms.” Mr Drummond said paintbrushes should preferably be washed on the lawn or in the garden. If the paint was water-based and no other options were available it was acceptable to wash one and only one brush a day in the laundry tub, he said. Businesses were being encouraged to develop waste management plans to assist employees of the correct disposal methods

for all waste in order to mitigate their risk. “We have talked with local contractors and DIY painters and found there is a willingness to ensure good practice and people want to know what to do. “When water based paint from brushes or rollersis washed under a hose on the lawn or garden the paint is absorbed and broken down in the soil. Wash water from the laundry tub is treated via the city’s sewage system,” Mr Drummond said. ECan was also working with paint manufacturers and suppliers to include information stickers on the lids of paint cans to remind people the best way to wash their paintbrushes.

Up close: Richard Pender in West Maui, Hawaii, observing a hybrid between a Clermontia micrantha and Clermontia grandiflora.

Scholarship funds Kiwi post-grad students in US CHRISTCHURCH-born PhD student Richard Pender is studying how endangered plants can reproduce in the absence of their pollinators at the University of Hawaii. Mr Pender was a recipient of the J R Templin Trust Scholarship. The scholarship was established by J R Templin, an American-born electrical engineer, who settled in New Zealand in 1910 and married a New Zealander. Passionate about engineering and horticulture, he set up a charitable trust to support study in the two fields, offering postgraduate Kiwi students the opportunity to study at America. Templin scholars are required to return to New Zealand and contribute to the industry of their chosen field for two years. Due to finish at the end of this year, Mr Pender said he was looking forward to using the knowledge he gained with New Zealand fauna and flora. “My extensive studies and research at the Manoa Campus in Honolulu at the University of Hawaii have given me a well-rounded understanding of how pollinator and seed disperser loss affects native plants. It is a question that is of global concern, and the questions I am addressing in Hawaii can be directly applied to New Zealand’s flora, he said.

Canterbury Japan Day 2012 will be held on Sunday, March 11 at Riccarton Park Event Centre and will follow the format of the popular Auckland Japan Day festival. Canterbury Japan Day will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Japanese Society. It

will also recognise the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Japan and recognise the great loss of life and extensive damage caused by the Christchurch and East Japan Earthquakes. The hope is that the Canterbury Japan

Day festival will contribute to the recovery from both these disasters by bringing local expat Japanese and Christchurch residents, who love Japanese culture, together in a positive spirit of mutual support as they move forward in their lives.

Origami Paper Cranes Ten thousand paper cranes have been sent from Hiroshima City to go on display at Canterbury Japan Day. In Japan, it is commonly said that folding 1000 paper origami cranes makes a person's wish come true. The link with Hiroshima is the nuclear disaster, which resulted from the earthquake. Hiroshima City hopes that the people of Christchurch can send some paper cranes back to Japan to wish the best for the people of East Japan.

Ties that bind: A thousand paper cranes are said to make someone’s wish come true, so the Japanese sent ten thousand to Canterbury and hope to also receive them.

By working together, it is hoped that both Christchurch and East Japan can overcome their disasters.

Exhibition of “E-tegami Picture Letters Members of the Japanese Picture Letter group in Kumano Town have produced some 50 picture letters, with words of encouragement for the people of Christchurch. The Picture Letters were displayed at the Kumano Town Council offices before being sent to Christchurch. The members of the group that produced the Picture Letters commented that they had put all of their heartfelt efforts into every word in the Picture Letters, and they hope that the people of Christchurch are able to feel the message of encouragement being sent. Long-distance friendship: The Japanese Picture Letter group also sent picture letters to cheer up the people of Christchurch after the devastating earthquakes.

Coping with stress DO you feel stressed with too much to do? Do you wonder how you can possibly ccalm down? Do you have a hopeless feeling because yyou feel that you can’t cope? Do you ever wonder how come some people cope easily with stress and you ccan’t? Unfair? It really has nothing to do with how much yyou have to do. Rather, it is linked to stress and how you perceived it earlier in your life, when you were li le.

It’s about the emo ons you stored back then and have not yet released. However, here is a strategy that you can do right now to help. Sit on your own and take 10 deep, slow breaths, coun ng them on your ďŹ ngers. Focus on your breath, feeling the air going in and out. Then bring your awareness to the space in between the breaths. No ce how the space increases as your breath slows. Feel the s llness that is here. It’s available at any me. anne e@emo onaltherapy.co.nz.

Social thriller explores consequences

Suspense-filled drama: The Birling family find their lives turned upside down in An Inspector Calls.

A NEW production of An Inspector Calls by the Repertory Theatre, which examines social hypocrisy and truth, opens on March 23. Set in 1912 before the sinking of Titanic, J B Priestly’s detective thriller focuses on people facing the consequences of their actions. The privileged Birling family regard themselves as being as unsinkable as the famous ship, but their lives are about to change. The family is celebrating their daughter’s engagement when a police inspector, who is investigating the murder of a young woman, calls. As the evening progresses, the dramatic tension mounts and after the inspector leaves, the audience experiences some unexpected twists and turns.

St Michael and All Angels’ Church on the corner of Durham Street and Oxford Terrace provides the atmospheric setting for this production directed by Rozena Hallum. The show runs until March 31. Show times are 7.30pm on Friday, Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday and 6pm on Monday, March 26. Tickets are $26 for adults, $21 for seniors and group bookings, $15 for students and discount voucher holders, and $12 for children 12 and under. For bookings, phone 379 8866 or visit www. repertory.co.nz. Door sales are available.

Italian ensemble performs classical favourites WELL-KNOWN ensemble I Musici from Rome will perform at the Aurora Centre at Burnside High School tomorrow evening on their first tour of New Zealand. The ensemble’s 1955 recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons sold more than 25 million copies, making it one of the most famous recordings of classical music. To celebrate the group’s 60th anniversary, I Musici gives an Italian serenade, with music by Rossini, Respighi, Paganini, and film composer Nino Rota (The Godfather). After their New Zealand tour, they will return to Italy for a 60th anniversary concert at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. The show begins at 7.30pm. Prices are $60 for A reserve adult tickets and $50 for B reserve adult tickets. All children’s tickets are $10. Visit www.ticketek.co.nz.

Bob Nettleton CREATING a tough, hardworking ute that drives like a car is almost wishful thinking, yet Ford almost got close with the new Ranger. Utes these days offer levels of refinement, sophistication, and safety, but the Ranger raises them to an all-new level and is the first ute to score a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The Ranger is sold here in double cab, super cab, and single cab formats, with 18 different variants. Prices start at $40,290 for the super cab 2WD six-speed manual to a fairly steep $66,290 for the Wildtrack six-speed automatic. The model for the road test was a mid-range 2WD XLT double cab automatic. One revelation is its dynamic 3.2 litre fivecylinder turbo diesel engine. Ten per cent more engine capacity, plus an extra cylinder, helps to emphatically out-muscle the competition with 147kw of power and 470nm of torque. This is one of the most modern and sophisticated diesels, so I expected it to be smooth and refined. It is, but it disappointed as it was noisy at speeds under 70km/h. Throttle response was very aggressive. The silky six-speed automatic makes this kingsized ute manageable and largely free of the driveline shunt or gear-changing indecision that hampers some automatics, although it did not rub off on the five-cylinder engine. One of its major benefits is the leg and head room for both front and rear-seat occupants. This workhorse is no ass when it comes to

stock equipment. The entry level XL is wellappointed, but it’s difficult to ignore the XLT’s 17-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control air conditioning, and rear parking sensors. Full marks for its bold squared-off chiselled lines. Whatever they did works, and they can now lay claim to one of the best-looking utes you can buy at the moment. The Ranger’s biggest surprise is the way it rides and handles. It’s so good, I found it hard to believe I was driving a ute as large and heavy as this one. Most of the ridecomfort boxes earn ticks, with the suspension displaying good bump-absorbing qualities over a variety of road surfaces.

Dra y, leaky or jammed? Does your community group need a new garage door? Local manufacturer donates $9,000 worth of garage doors to Canterbury groups in need. CHARITIES, community groups and sports clubs in the Canterbury region will have their storage or parking dilemmas solved if they win one of two fully installed garage doors being donated by local manufacturer B&D Doors. The promo on, a partnership between B&D Doors, Mainland Press, and its new tle Selwyn View, gives chari es, sports clubs and community groups the chance to win one of two garage door and automa c opener packages. Valued at up to $4500, the prizewinning packages will each be supplied and installed by B&D Doors’ dealerships, Garador and Dominator. Announcing the promo on, B&D Doors New Zealand country manager Tim Dalzell said the company was delighted to be able to give something back to Canterbury. “We know there are community groups s ll in need – either due to quake damage, or because the charity dollar has been harder to find this past year.”

Groups simply have to put in 250 words why they are most deserving, and submit their entry plus photos to Mainland Press by March 19. Entries will be judged by Mr Dalzell, Selwyn District mayor Kelvin Coe, and Mainland Press special projects manager Gareth Bines. “We’ve been a proud local manufacturer for many years, employing 70 people at our Bromley site,” Mr Dalzell said. “Our factory was hit hard in February 2011 but with everyone pulling together, and great support from suppliers, distributors and customers, we were back into full produc on within a week and have managed to retain all jobs on site. “It’s an achievement we’re proud of when so many businesses are forced to ques on their ability to stay in the region.” So, if your group or club is sick of that dra y, leaky or jammed garage door, put pen to paper and send your entry plus photos in to gareth@mainlandpress.co.nz by March 19 and be in to win.

Another ticked off bucket list

LAST weekend, the landlady and I set off down to Dunedin for our first look at the Dunedin Stadium in action. The first Super 15 home game in the 2012 season for the Highlanders was against the Crusaders. As we were all aware, a “weather bomb” was set to hit New Zealand and I would have to say, given that forecast, there was no way we would have considered going down to Carisbrook to endure those conditions. We were privileged to be invited to the stadium as special guests. On the way there, our host took us to look at the University Oval, set to host a test match between the Black Caps and South Africa. How impressive that facility is! It highlighted to me how important a purpose-developed cricket ground is for a city. It also confirmed a sporting ‘hub’ is the way to go if and when Canterbury gets its act together. Alongside the stadium and the test cricket venue is Otago Tennis and the athletics all-weather track. The stadium was intimate, close to the action, and noisy with a huge crowd in attendance. No problem getting in, a pleasant welcome from the staff, and no problem getting to our seats. From there, though, things got very untidy.

We asked for a beer and we were asked what bottle we would like. No thanks, a tap draught would be great. Sorry was the answer, the tap beer is all flat! There was a food menu on the bar with bar snacks. No-one wanted to take my order, so I wandered away. At the end of the night, my host went to sign off his tab and was asked by the staff, “What did you have as we have no record?” Getting away from the stadium was not too bad at all, but in the car, all the talk was how disappointing the night was as far as the rugby fans were concerned. Sure, this was the first Super 15 match at the stadium, but let’s face it, they had already hosted a series of Rugby World Cup matches and an Elton John concert. The Highlanders played superbly and deserved the victory, but given the events that unfolded over the shambles with the Otego Rugby Union last week, the people involved with running this stunning new facility had better get their act together really quickly otherwise they will lose the fan base they so desperately require to make this envy of New Zealand, Dunedin Stadium, the success it deserves to be.

Top cricket ground ‘urgently needed’ Tom Doudney

CHRISTCHURCH needs to get cracking on developing an international cricket venue for the sake of the game locally, former Canterbury and Black Caps batsman Craig McMillan says. McMillan recently spoke up in support of upgrading Hagley Oval, citing its central location and the success of the recent Twenty20 match between Canterbury and South Africa as positive signs of the ground’s ability to host international cricket. With New Zealand co-hosting the next cricket world cup in 2015 with Australia, he said it was important to decide where the city’s main ground would be. Last week, McMillan told Mainland Press that the issue also needed to be given

27

priority so that the next generation Craig McMillan of young cricket stars are exposed to international cricket and not lost to other sports. “I remember as a young kid growing up, I used to love going to Lancaster Park and watching the New Zealand cricket team and sitting in the stands, you knew that was a special place that only internationals and good players got to play at,” he said. “We need something like that, so our youngsters can come and watch the New Zealand team because if they don’t watch them for the next four or five years, they’ll filter off into different sports.”

A NATIONWIDE hunt is on to find NZ Golf’s ‘2012 Junior Tiger’ and Canterbury’s district qualifier will be at Coringa Golf Club on Sunday, March 18 at 8.30am. The winner will represent New Zealand at the World Junior Golf Championships.

In limbo: Orange-zoned jewellery designer Deanna Gracie is working from home whilst waiting for answers, so she can move on with her business and life.

Destroyed dreams: Maggie Campbell feels stuck in her ruined orange-zoned Rockinghorse Road home and wants to move on.

Waiting for answers: Retiree Rosalie Stuart is sick of waiting for a decision on her orangezoned Rockinghorse Road property.

‘How much longer?’ Gina McKenzie

DISTRESSED Southshore orange zoners are fed up after waiting 18 months for answers on their earthquake status and want to move on with their lives. Southshore was split into two zones in October, with the beach side of Rockinghorse Road zoned green and the estuary side classified as orange. Maggie Campbell, who moved to Southshore from Northern Ireland 25 years ago, is living with her husband in an earthquake-damaged studio unit behind her destroyed dream home in Rockinghorse Rd. “Our house was classed as a rebuild in September 2010 and yet we’re still trapped here like prisoners. “We’ve found a piece of land in Pegasus Bay, but because we’re orange, we can’t move on.” Mrs Campbell felt Southshore had been forgotten and was frustrated

with the lack of information about her property. “The last Cera meeting scheduled for December was suddenly cancelled and we haven’t had any contact from them since. “It’s ironic that we left Northern Ireland to escape the orange and green and now we’re trapped in the orange zone like this.” Further along Rockinghorse Rd, Rosalie Stuart and her husband wanted to remain on their orange-zoned land, but the lack of certainty over their future was taking a toll on the elderly couple. “We’ve been here 55 years and we want to stay, but we’re worried about how long will it take to find out what’s happening.” Mrs Stuart tried to remain upbeat, but on some nights, she had trouble sleeping. “At our age you wonder if you’ll still be around when it’s finished.” Continued on page 2

United vision: Catholic Cathedral College has welcomed Marian College onto its Barbadoes Street site. From left: Cody Te Ana (Catholic Cathedral College), Lincoln Schaapsneerders-Noah (CCC), Sigrid Naszczak (CCC), Samantha Lakin (CCC), Devon Caffell (Marian College), Samantha Jones (Marian College), Chantelle Shatford (Marian College).

SEPARATE school campuses, cultures, and traditions were no match for the united vision, which now sees two Catholic secondary schools operating from the Catholic Cathedral College site in Barbadoes Street. The “medium term” site-sharing arrangement was expected to last for two to four years. “Our guide throughout this whole exercise has been collaboration versus conflict, cooperation versus competition,” said Bruce Henley, principal of Catholic Cathedral College. “As part of the group that planned for this to happen, we were adamant about retaining the unique traditions and cultures of each of the schools. “But the common bond, which has allowed

us to succeed, is our Catholic faith.” A $2.4 million redevelopment project had seen all of the original buildings at the Cathedral College site strengthened and upgraded. Marian College deputy principal Frank Moran said the entire process had been incredible. “If someone had said 12 months ago that we would be on the Cathedral site, I wouldn’t have believed it. When we looked at it at first, we thought it wouldn’t ever work. “But both schools knew where we wanted to go, and were prepared to make it work, and that is what allowed the staff of both schools to get on board. Their co-operation and buyin has been fantastic.”

‘How much longer?’ Continued from page 1 Meanwhile, in nearby Pukeko Place, Deanna Gracie struggles to keep her jewellery business afloat in a small studio behind her orangezoned home. She created contemporary jewellery at an Arts Centre studio for 16 years before the earthquake struck. With both her house and business in limbo, Mrs Gracie was distressed by the lack of control she had over her future. “I want to get a new studio up and running,

but my hands are tied because I’m in the orange zone. “It’s hard to stay positive when you can’t even print business cards because you don’t know where you’re going.” Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee stated at a media conference last week that orange-zoned residents should receive a final decision by the end of the month.

FOCUS and determination saw Natasha Boon, 12, take out the recent Palms busking contest, which has funded her trip to Seattle to compete in a gymnastics event. The contest was Natasha’s first foray into the world of busking, but her gymnastics and jazz dance background helped her overcome tough competition. Her winning jazz dance was performed to Adam Lambert’s song For Your Entertainment and included some elements of gymnastics. Natasha’s mother Trudy was thrilled with her daughter’s win as the family had been struggling to fund her trip to the USA. “It was such a thrill for her to win as it was touch and go as to whether she would be able to go.

“Her dedication paid off against a very tough field. “She was so happy to be able to join the other girls on her flight to Seattle on Saturday. Natasha, who is homeschooled in Rangiora, has a busy routine consisting of 28 hours per week of gymnastics along with three evenings of dance training. Natasha’s club, Christchurch School of Gymnastics, was badly damaged in the earthquakes, so training conditions had been difficult. “It has been tough for all the gymnasts, but they have stuck at it and are still doing really well despite the difficult situation. Natasha’s ultimate goal is to represent New Zealand in artistic gymnastics at the Olympic Games.

Celebration for North New Brighton School Gina McKenzie

THE positive spirit and adaptable nature of North New Brighton School were celebrated at the school’s annual Wave Rider Day last Thursday. Wave Rider Day espoused the school’s motto of “effort, enjoyment, enthusiasm and excellence and provided a fun day for the school’s 220 pupils. The event provided a much-needed boost for the school, which lost its swimming pool, school hall and administration block in last February’s earthquake. Students enjoyed bouncy castles, face painting, skateboarding lessons from Cheapskates, and an obstacle course. Youth Alive Trust organised the fun day as part of their New Brighton schools’ fun programme, which provided activity days for 830 pupils from South New Brighton, New Brighton Catholic, and North New Brighton schools. Youth Alive Trust coordinator James Ridpath was delighted to see students smiling and enjoying themselves after a stressful year. “We could measure the success of the day by the huge smiles on the faces of the kids,

and it was wonderful to see them having fun without any worries. “It’s really important to keep the community together and help the children enjoy themselves when they have lost so much. Despite the Balancing act: Piper Nolan, year four; Hollie difficulties North Haughton, year five; and Kiara Brady, year five New Brighton School try out skateboarding during North New Brighton had faced, staff were School’s annual Wave Rider Day held last impressed with the Thursday. positive attitude the students had displayed. Teacher Smruti Pavlov said the school spirit was very postive due to strong support from the New Brighton community. “The school community is strong and students have adapted remarkably well and this reflects the community we live in and the hard work of school staff. “Despite everything we’ve been through, we’re moving forward and making the best of life.

THREE budding entrepreneurs from St Bede’s College are planning to launch a recipe book to raise funds for the Christchurch Mayoral Fund. But don’t expect to see your normal television celebrity chefs featured in it. The trio, Matt Smith, Cameron Exeter and Andrew Duxbury all 17, intend collating favourite recipes from people who have featured throughout the earthquake recovery. “We want to get the big names and faces that were familiar around the earthquakes, people who helped out and survivors. “We want to get representatives from the various contractors, rescuers, a representative from all the international USAR teams that came to Christchurch, New Zealand Sign Language interpreters Jeremy Borland and Evelyn Pateman, Gerry Brownlee, Bob

Parker, and John Key, Cameron said. The group, known as CH2 is among about 200 Christchurch students taking part in the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme this year. Students from 16 schools met with business mentors on Monday at the Canterbury Horticultural Centre to discuss ideas and learn what to expect throughout the year as they grow their business from an idea to a sellable product. Matt said the friends always intended on raising funds for a charity through their young enterprise product. After considering a variety of options including a rugby-themed product, they settled on the earthquake recipe book, he said. “Most of the books and TV programmes [about the earthquake] have been about what

happened so we’re trying to make something a bit different which people will be able to use more than once. It’s not just something that lives on your bookshelf. Matt said they did not want to focus solely on the February earthquake, but also talk to people who were involved with the September earthquake such as the boy who fell out of his house in the Selwyn District. “We want to include a little blurb about each person who contributes to the book and their connection to the earthquakes, he said. The friends hope to use a Christchurchbased printer to publish their recipe book and launch it in the Christchurch City container mall. “Our big thing will be ‘Made in Christchurch for Christchurch’, Cameron said.

Grandfather inspired Nicky appointed as test referee Casebrook writer ORANA Wildlife Park’s Visitor Services co-ordinator, Nicky Inwood, has received recognition for her hobby – rugby refereeing. She has been selected to officiate in two test matches as part of the women’s RBS Six Nations Rugby Championship in Europe. “It is an honour to be picked to referee in such a prestigious competition. The International Rugby Board has an emphasis on increasing the profile of women’s rugby, particularly since

the game of seven’s rugby will be introduced to the Olympics in 2016. Therefore, my appointment is a fabulous profile for aspiring young female referees. She will be in charge of the France versus England test match and this game is likely to decide the tournament. “I will also officiate in the England versus Ireland test on St Patrick’s Day, which is set to be a marvellous occasion.

News in brief Work begins on runways

CASEBROOK woman Jessica McGarvey, above, has recently released her first children’s picture book Custard & Carriages, which she both wrote and illustrated. This self-published book was inspired and influenced by her late grandfather, Bill Lindbom, who worked on the Greymouth railways for 40 years and would often spend time with Jessica’s family when he drove trains down to Hokitika. As a child, Jessica also visited her grandfather at his home. These visits, blended with the excitement of train stories, helped stimulate

Jessica’s desire to draw and write this picture Nicky Inwood: From animals to rugby. book. The story also conveys the unique bond that is shared between grandparents and their grandchildren. The book took four years to write and a recent review from The School Library, an online THE Christchurch City Council has approved publication on the New Zealand Book Council a submission on the Manukau City Council website, is glowing. Jessica is now busy working (Regulation of Prostitution in Specified Places) on her next book, which will also have a New Bill. The Christchurch City Council intended Zealand theme. To find out more about the book, visit to make a submission on the bill when it was first read in parliament on September, 8, www.jessmcgarvey.blogspot.com. 2010. Although the submission period for this bill closed on November 5, 2010, due to the September 4 earthquake, the Christchurch City Council was unable to make a submission at this time.

ANNUAL runway maintenance work has started at Christchurch Airport. For operational and safety reasons, the work is undertaken at night and is expected to be completed over the next four weeks. The airport has advised that the work could lead to increased aircraft movements on the crosswind runway, with increased levels of aircraft noise. “Christchurch International Airport, Airways Corporation, airlines, and the contractors involved are conscious of the impact these essential annual works have on our neighbours’ airport, communications manager Yvonne Densem said. “We are doing our best to minimise the effects and appreciate our neighbours’ patience and understanding.

Christchurch city councillor Sue Wells, who will be presenting the submission to Parliament, said the decision would provide greater clarity regarding the council’s position on street prostitution and its control over the locations where the business of prostitution, or commercial sexual services, could occur. Cr Wells hoped that the bill, which currently only applied to Auckland, would, in the future, be able to be extended to any council in New Zealand experiencing similar issues with street prostitution and associated activities.

Carpooling starts at university A NEW online carpool scheme is operating at the University of Canterbury (UC) to help staff and students get to campus, save money, and lower their carbon footprint. The UC system is built using ridesharing network Jayride, a social media platform designed for carpooling which, on any day, has 8000 or more carpools listed across New Zealand. UC sustainability advocate Dr Matt Morris said carpooling was a great way to travel to the university.

“Not only does every carpooler save money on their commute, they also reduce their environmental impact, create less congestion, need fewer car parks, and build a stronger community of staff and students.” The carpool system helps potential car-poolers meet new friends in their neighbourhood, who can travel together to the university at times that suit them. If staff and students could not find a carpool match inside the university, then they could view other carpool

groups in the area whether the other groups use the UC system or not. UC’s carpool system also includes safety and privacy features, links to social media profiles, and the ability for drivers to list how much money they would like towards expenses. “Carpoolers can save around $2400 every year on their commute,” said Rod Bishop, spokesperson for Jayride. More information about Jayride can be found at http://www.jayride.co.nz/.

THE Crusaders have some new artwork to adorn their walls at training base Rugby Park in St Albans, courtesy of a group of children from Paris. The youngsters, aged from six to 11, were impressed when Morgan Strum, their teacher at the Centre Européen de Loisirsetd’Accueil, talked about New Zealand. He told

them of the country’s physical beauty and how it was a little paradise. However, when he mentioned the Canterbury earthquakes, the children were moved and decided to do something special. “Once they learned of the earthquakes, they realised the little paradise could be

suffering,” he said. The result was that they painted frescos especially for Christchurch. The frescos have been brought to New Zealand and besides the Crusaders, they have been presented to the children’s ward at Christchurch Hospital, the Alliance Française, Lyttelton School, and Sumner School.

dangerous, but a frightening experience for the cyclist. It’s also important when getting behind the wheel to always be looking for cyclists on the road. Cyclists are not many, but harder to see. If in a queue waiting to make a right turn, look again immediately before turning. Also, use your rear Consideration For cyclists, consideration vision mirror when getting out generally means keeping left of the driver’s side door. so as not to hinder the passage of motorists. It helps to think Logic There are times when cycling of your speed versus their speed. If they’re going a whole two abreast is fine, but there lot faster, then stay out of their are certainly occasions when it is not! Once again, think way! Motorists need to consider logically about your use of the that passing cyclists without road and how it impacts on a wide berth is not only motorists. FOR cyclists and motorists, our roads, even before earthquakes, were valuable and limited resources. Whilst a greater element of patience is now required, the use of consideration and logic are key aspects we need to employ when sharing the road.

There are times, however, when it is unsafe and impractical for cyclists to remain hard left, which motorists must understand. This is the case when cycling past parked cars with people in the driver seat or when road rubbish (gravel and broken glass) is swept to the left-hand shoulder. Each trip or ride is an experience, which can and should be enjoyed, if you take time before and during to remember these two key aspects. Maybe the best tip to achieving a pleasurable experience is to leave home with extra time up your sleeve! (Paul Odlin is a cycling coach and nationally ranked cyclist)

Canterbury’s specialists in kitchen appliances

Expert in-depth knowledge

Kitchen Appliance Specialists specialise in appliance house-lots. Our huge range of appliance and brand choice coupled with our expert advice means we can formulate the total appliance solution for you, be it for a renovation, the new home of a lifetime, a spec home or a commercial situation. If you are looking for ovens, cooktops, dishwashers, ranges, range hoods, fridge freezers and laundry, we have the perfect appliance choice for you!

Part of the KAS difference is the depth of understanding that we have of the appliances we sell. We do tests where we cook in the ovens, try out the features of induction and other cooktops, use laundry and dishwasher models in-store so that you can see how they perform before you buy. We will even test a particular oven for you if we have no experience of it.
