“They’re getting better since the earthquake, but it’s definitely heavier than before the earthquakes, especially in the west. I guess there are things that can be done, but other than more roads, I don’t know what the short-term solutions are.”
“Worse over this side of town [Avonhead] because more people are hanging around here. Not sure what could be done.”
“It’s getting better compared to during the earthquake, but there’s still gridlock traffic around Riccarton, although it’s better than what it was. Opening the overbridge or southern motorway will help ease traffic down there.”
“[Traffic] is about the same, maybe a little bit worse. They could put in a few more traffic lights.”

When Mainland Press visited the terminal on Monday night there were about 40 people staying there and more settling in as flights arrived. British tourist Martin Tierney, 25, said it was his second time staying at the airport. He said it would have cost about $60 for a return shuttle to the city and a night in a backpackers’. “At the end of our travels we decided it’s easier to save some money and rough it here. They’ve got showers and free wi-fi.” He said the downsides were being woken up at 5am by airport cleaners and the cold air coming in the doors. Mr Tierney said if there were cheap accommodation options near the airport he would use them. Austrian tourist Verena Moric, 28, said she was staying at the airport because she had an early flight to catch and decided it wasn’t worth paying for a hostel and shuttle. She said she felt safe at the airport because there were lots of people around but it would be good if the airport had a specific area set aside for those waiting during the night.

CONSERVATIVE Party leader Colin Craig believes that if Christchurch people don’t want high-rise commercial buildings to be constructed in the city, then they shouldn’t be. While visiting Christchurch last week to catch up with candidates and family, Mr Craig had a look through the central city and was struck by all the landmarks that had gone. However, the rebuild had to be the way people wanted it, he said. “One of the issues is, are buildings there for people? If so, and if people don’t want buildings that are seven or nine storeys high, then you have to listen to them.” The Auckland-based businessman turned political candidate, who has become

wealthy through his involvement in the high-rise property sector, wondered why tall buildings were necessary. In terms of return on investment, “you can achieve something at four storeys quite happily,” he said, though he admitted there were challenging times ahead for Christchurch. “There is still a lot of uncertainty and it’s a challenge for everyone involved. Talking to people, like tradesmen for example, I’ve found there’s also a feeling of frustration that things should be underway by now. They need people to give the green light to start things happening. There’s got to be a clear way forward. Investors like to see things happening and things going ahead.”

Stuck in limbo: Forresters Crescent homeowners Fiona and Craig Innes, left, in front of one of the sinkholes which extends all the way under their uninhabitable house. The Innes family along with fellow Parklands Action Group members Fiona Macpherson and Dr Vanessa Tappenden want East Parklands red-zoned.

A DREAM East Parklands home has become an earthquake trap for Fiona and Craig Innes who are paying $1000 in weekly rent plus mortgage payments on their blue green-zoned property. They are members of the 170-strong Parklands Action Group which has been lobbying for East Parklands to be red-zoned since last December’s earthquake severely damaged the suburb. The Innes family escaped their Forresters Crescent home after the December 23 aftershock rendered it uninhabitable. “The walls weren’t attached to the floor and sinkholes run under the foundation so there was no way we could stay here. The only rental property the family could find that would accept them and their two small dogs was a $1050 per week house in West Melton. “Now we’re stuck paying rent and a mortgage for a destroyed home in a dangerous area that we never want to live in again. “If the land goes green no-one will reinsure us and you can’t get a mortage if you can’t get insurance and you can’t sell the place either. Mrs Innes said some East Parklands residents were taking medication to cope with the stress of not being able to control their lives. “It’s really hard to stay positive when you’re trapped like this. Parklands Action Group coordinator Dr Vanessa Tappenden said the group had written to Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee regarding insurance issues affecting blue-green zoned land. “It is clear from feedback residents have had from their insurance companies that blue green -zoned land that has suffered significant land damage is considered high risk. Dr Tappenden said one insurance company had told East Parklands residents that even if they were required to rebuild on the existing section, they would not guarantee cover.
“We just want the land red-zoned so people can move on and start living their lives again. Mr Brownlee said that the vast majority of blue-green zoned land was still insured and that he understood insurers were treating each property on a case by case basis. He also said that the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) had undertaken a thorough review of East Parklands zoning after the December 23 aftershock. “Officials have had discussions with the Parklands Action Group, geotechnical engineers, EQC and the Christchurch City Council to consider whether Parklands East still meets green zone criteria. “A decision is expected in the very near future.

Getting to grips with new give way rules PRACTISING the new give way rules has been made easy for drivers, with a new online interactive module, eDrive, which was launched on Monday. The rules will change as of 5am on Sunday, March 25. This interactive practice tool is designed to help people understand the rules easily and test themselves on the change. The practice scenarios show real-life intersection scenes filmed in Hamilton. The user sits behind a virtual dashboard from where they make their decision on how they would act in a given situation. eDrive is based on years of research on how people learn best and which skills are important in avoiding crashes on the road.
eDrive Solutions, who made the module, have been involved in the road safety arena for many years. Their core training programme can be accessed at www.edrive.co.nz and is free to all learner drivers between the ages of 16 and 19, who are members of Practice, an NZTA initiative to encourage new drivers to get plenty of practice. CEO of eDrive Solutions Robert Isler said the road toll in New Zealand was simply too high. He and his daughter Nadine Isler head up the project. Their goal is to make a difference by making New Zealand’s roads safer for everyone. To use the module, visit the website www. giveway.co.nz.

Celebrating: The Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band celebrates after winning the New Zealand Pipe Band Grade 1 Championship in Tauranga for the first time in its 110-year history. It was also the first time since 1980 that the championship was won by a South Island band. Led by Pipe Major Richard Hawke and Drum Sergeant James Laughlin, the band won the grade 1 medley event, finished second in the selection event, won the grade 1 street march and the New Zealand drumming championship. It also took trophies for the best bass and tenor section. The Canterbury Caledonian Society was based at the Caledonian Hall in Kilmore Street, which was destroyed by the earthquake on February 22, 2011. Since then, with no permanent base, the society’s pipe bands have been practising in various facilities around Christchurch. The band also lost equipment and some uniforms in the earthquake, but managed to raise funds to replace them.
Popular market looks certain for comeback Chris Tobin
A NEW trading location for the displaced Cathedral Square market is not far off. Ever since the February 22, 2011, earthquake the market which comprised around 50 stallholders, has been looking for a new home. Gloria Verweij who co-ordinates the market with her husband and son, said since November negotiations had been going on with landowners and the Central City Business Association to re-establish the market on The Strip opposite the Bridge of Remembrance. “There are still some issues to deal with from the company which owns the land but we have signed a temporary lease to trade there and we’re waiting for consent,” Mrs Verweij said. Manager of the Central City Business Association Paul Lonsdale said the matter should be sorted in a couple of weeks allowing the market with about 20 stallholders to be up and running. Retailers in the pop-up Re:Start Cashel (City) Mall were welcoming the market according to Mr Lonsdale. “It builds on what we’ve got and will give more reasons to come into the central city. There’ve been requests from tourists too for
some kind of a market.” Since February 22 last year, Mrs Verweij had attempted to start up a market on Rolleston Avenue, without success. Then, the YMCA allowed the market to trade for a period in its carpark on the corner of Hereford Street and Rolleston Avenue. Next stop was Addington Raceway where the market opened on a Sunday but there was little foot traffic. St Elmo Courts on the corner of Hereford and Durham Sts was the next temporary location. Again foot traffic was light. Mrs Verweij said many of the stallholders had left the city and some had gone to Australia. Hopes had been held that a market could have been operating around the time of the Ellerslie International Flower Show but this did not happen. The cruiseship trade had been lucrative in the past. However, she said it appeared people from the ships were avoiding the central city this summer and being taken to visit the Antarctic Centre. Stallholder Pat Carnahan said since losing Cathedral Square it had been extremely difficult but with The Strip now likely as a market site, “it would be wonderful.”

Power supply in north-east Christchurch As soon as the extent of damage became apparent, we developed a comprehensive work programme to rebuild, repair and strengthen the network. This newsletter is to update you on our progress in the areas coloured teal and brown in the map below.
Due to the impacts of the continuing earthquakes, Orion’s electricity network in north-east Christchurch is less robust than it was pre-quakes. Many of the underground power cables in that area have stretched, cracked, bent or twisted and some have been damaged beyond repair.

Why you’re experiencing power cuts As well as a higher than usual number of smaller power cuts caused by damage to the 11kV underground cable network in north-east Christchurch, there have been three major power cuts since the temporary overhead lines were built. The widespread cuts were caused by birds flying into the lines or the lines clashing together during aftershocks, causing the substation at either Dallington or Rawhiti Domain to shut down. Each of those substations supplies power to around 12,000 homes and businesses in the surrounding suburbs. These outages highlight that electricity supply into north-east Christchurch via the temporary overhead lines is less secure than it was pre-quakes. Before 22 February 2011, power was supplied from the national grid to the two major substations in the north-east via two sets of parallel cables (the four underground cables mentioned above). If one of
those cables failed, the power stayed on because of the second parallel cable. Now, because of extensive cable damage, power is supplied to the two substations via individual temporary overhead lines and we don’t have the option to quickly reroute power if the overhead lines fail. Instead, we need to ‘switch around’ other parts of the network to provide a temporary power supply – this is complicated and can take time. These outages also illustrate that while many people prefer their utilities to be out of sight underground, modern overhead lines built to the latest seismic standards generally withstand earthquakes better and can be repaired much faster than underground cables, although it is easier to design underground cables to withstand the effects of wildlife and vegetation.

Our immediate emergency measures to boost electricity supply to keep the power on in the north-east after the February 2011 earthquake included building a new major substation on solid ground in Rawhiti Domain off Keyes Road in New Brighton. We also built two temporary high voltage (66,000 volts [66kV] each) power lines from the national grid in Bromley to Dallington and to the new substation in Rawhiti Domain. These lines were needed to replace the four badlydamaged 66kV cables which took power into the area before the quakes. The temporary lines will stay in place for three years while permanent solutions are designed and built to carry power into north-east Christchurch. More than 1000 faults on the smaller cables (11,000 volts [11kV]) which carry power around these areas have been repaired. We have also recalibrated substation alarms so that strong jolts are less likely to trip safety mechanisms at substations. The alarms are designed to prevent transformers from burning out and are very sensitive to sudden changes in oil levels, which happen during seismic activity. We continue to look at ways to fine-tune the alarms so they do their job of preventing transformer damage but are less likely to be set off by earth tremors. These important safety systems can’t just be turned off – if a transformer burnt out it would take months to build a new one and there could be lengthy power cuts.
What we are doing overhead lines fail – these generators will be ready for use in May 2012
As we prepare to develop permanent solutions to carry power into northeast Christchurch, projects are underway to make power supply more secure during the time it will take to complete the permanent work. These projects include:
• making small changes to the design
• installing a new 66kV underground
• fine-tuning our substation alarms
cable from our major substation in McFaddens Road in St Albans to our Dallington substation – this will give us another option to get power to the suburbs around the Dallington area if the temporary overhead line into Dallington from Bromley is affected by weather or wildlife. Laying this cable is a major project which we expect to complete by August 2013
• installing more large diesel generators in the grounds at QEII park to provide some backup power supply if either of the temporary
of the temporary overhead lines to reduce the likelihood of power cuts if a bird flies into the lines so they do their job of preventing transformer damage but are less likely to be set off by earth tremors
• a project by national grid owner Transpower to replace circuit breakers at the Bromley substation to reduce the length of power cuts.

Online cooking holiday programme is NZ first E
ver wished the kids reached for a pan instead of the PlaySta on during the school holidays? Help is at hand with an NZ first - the ‘It’s My Turn To Cook Tonight Bosch School Holiday Programme’. The five-day cooking programme will debut in the second week of the school holidays in April, and it’s designed especially for kids to do at home using the internet. The programme has been cooked up by healthy ea ng advocates, Glenda and Claire Gourley, a mother and daughter duo, with the support of key sponsor Bosch Home Appliances. Together they have come up with a threepart plan for children, parents, and teens. Children are entertained and taught cooking skills by inspiring student role models, and student tutors create their own employment, gain leadership, and food skills while they are being challenged and mo vated. Even parents stuck for ideas during the holidays can par cipate with their own kids, using Claire as an inspiring teen to teach cooking skills. “In a nutshell, ‘It’s My Turn To Cook Tonight Bosch School Holiday Programme’ teaches big kids or parents to teach younger kids to cook,” says Glenda. “The outcomes are awesome. If you’re a parent doing this with your kids, you have

This is a novel approach for Kiwi kids on holiday in that it uses the internet to connect the kids each day and allows them to interact through Claire’s website. Each morning, par cipants jump online and watch Claire’s daily YouTube. They can find out what is happening with other kids around the country, learn some foodie or nutri on ps, get help with what they are cooking, and par cipate in the daily challenges. Later in the day, they can share their culinary crea ons and enter compe ons. Claire will use recipes from her awardwinning cookbook for teens, Who’s Cooking Tonight? Once signed up for the programme, they will receive a pack and online support with guidelines on how to run the cooking classes, kitchen safety, food and nutri on ps, and ac vi es to do once the dishes are done. The budding cooks will get a copy of Claire’s cookbook, online support, and the chance to win daily prizes. Parents will receive a copy of Glenda’s latest book Life Love Food Kids, which is chock-full of strategies and prac cal ps on how to bring up food savvy kids. Cob cottage likely to be demolished Samantha Early
CRACROFT House on Cashmere Road looks likely to be another historic building lost to the earthquakes. The 1850s’ cob cottage, which was built of mud brick by early landowner Sir John Cracroft Wilson, has served for the past seven decades as a facility for Girl Guiding New Zealand. Property manager Greg Monk said they were still working through the process of deciding the building’s future, but insurers had agreed it was uneconomic to repair it and it was likely to be demolished. “It has been communicated with our members that it’s the likely scenario, but until we meet the Christchurch City Council and Historic Places Trust, it’s not 100 per cent sure.”
Mr Monk said demolition would require resource consent, and engineers from the organisations were due to visit the house on Monday. Cracroft Guiding Centre warden Trevina Wilson said a group of Brownies, girls aged between seven and 10, was sleeping in Cracroft House when the September 4, 2010 earthquake struck, badly damaging it. Since then, the building has been out of use and the damage has worsened with subsequent shakes. Ms Wilson said the house, which could sleep 22 people, was used for training sessions, community groups, schools and churches. She said there was sadness among
guides nationwide that the house was likely to go, but they realised they needed to move on. “It’s important to the members that it actually will always be part of our history and it will live on and that there will be something in a new building that will represent the old house.” In the mid-1940s, the house and grounds were loaned to the guiding community for activities and meetings by Sir John Cracroft Wilson’s great-grandson, John Frederick Cracroft Wilson, whose mother Mildred and wife Barbara were heavily involved in the organisation. In 1958, the family gave 3.5 acres, including the house, to the Girl Guides Association.

New four-lane pool unveiled in Spreydon THE new Learn to Swim pool at Spreydon’s Pioneer Recreation and Sports Centre was officially opened on March 11. The 16-metre long, four-lane pool is dualdepth, meaning its water level can be changed from 75cm to one metre in a short space of time, depending on the needs of the children learning to swim. “This innovative feature makes the pool perfect for teaching kids of all ages and abilities, from pre-schoolers up,” Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said. “It’s this sort of innovation that has seen our Recreation and Sports Unit recognised for their continued delivery of top-notch swimming programmes following Christchurch’s earthquakes, and I’m incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved,” Mayor Parker said. As part of its Aquatic Facilities Plan in 2006, the Christchurch City Council identified a new, shallow pool was needed at Pioneer to provide swim education opportunities for younger children and to free up space in the other pools. The facility also includes changing rooms, toilets, and a shower.

Repairs progress at Huntsbury reservoir THE next stage of repair works on the earthquake-damaged Huntsbury water reservoir is due to start early next month. The old reservoir, built in 1954 with a capacity of 35,000 cubic metres of water, is being recreated as two separate smaller reservoirs on the existing site by Fulton Hogan as part of the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT). Stage one and the new pump station were finished in December last year and provide 6000 cubic metres of capacity. Stage two will provide a further 7000 cubic metres of capacity. However, before work on that stage begins, a section of the old reservoir needs to be demolished. This is due to happen between early April and early May, with parts of the walls and roof to be removed one metre at a time using cutters.

The past meets the future: Two stamps from the 75 Years of the RNZAF issue. ‘The beginning’ depicts a Tiger Moth at Wigram.
Stamp issue marks 75 years for RNZAF NEW Zealand Post is honouring the 75th anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Air Force with a special stamp issue and a commemorative legal tender coin. The anniversary stamps come in 15 different designs, each with a face value of 60 cents. They showcase the work of the RNZAF and feature aircraft ranging from the Tiger Moth and Skyhawk to the state-of-the-art NH-90 helicopter. “We’ve set out to accentuate the diverse roles airmen and women play in New Zealand and around the world during
times of war and in times of peace,” sales and marketing manager of New Zealand Post’s stamps and coins business Simon Allison said. NZ Post worked closely with the RNZAF and the Air Force Museum in Wigram to develop the designs, he said. The artwork on seven of the stamps is based on black and white photographs supplied by the museum. The stamp issue and the commemorative coin were officially launched at Parliament last Wednesday by the Minister of Defence, Dr Jonathan Coleman.
THE historic Old Stone House in Cracroft rose from the ashes in the 1970s, but its future is uncertain now. The Christchurch City Council owns the house and is working through the options as to its future, together with 1600 other councilowned facilities, which have been damaged by the earthquakes. The Old Stone House was built in 1870 by early Christchurch landowner Sir John Cracroft Wilson as accommodation for the servants he had brought over from India. He lived in the nearby Cracroft House. The house was used by the Student Christian Movement from 1919 onwards. In 1971, a fire destroyed the main roof and upper floor. A massive volunteer effort resulted in the building being saved. Since 1972, the house has been managed by the Cracroft Community Centre and was rented out for functions on weekends. Cracroft Community Centre chair Olwyn Rudd said during the week it hosted a variety of community activities including scrabble, bridge, handwork, spinning, china painting, Rotary meetings, exercise class, lions group and a book club. Mrs Rudd said the building reopened for a short time following the February 22 quake, but was then closed and yellowstickered, restricting access. The council did a detailed engineering evaluation, which revealed that the house’s lower
level met less than 34 per cent of the new building standard, meaning it was earthquakeprone. A geotechnical report in July considered there were no significant issues with the land. Information provided to the Cracroft Community Centre’s 39th annual general meeting, held last Monday, indicated further engineering investigations would be carried out to produce options for repairing the building. The council had indicated it would take until mid-2014 for decisions to be made on all its facilities. “We’re in the queue…we’re just in the lap of the gods when it will be done and how much more has to be done to it,” Mrs Rudd said. She said the house was earthquake strengthened when it was rebuilt following the fire. “That’s why it has held up well.” In the meantime, a group of dedicated volunteers is making sure the landmark still looked good, turning up every week to maintain the garden. “It’s loyalty to the community, but we have also established a good friendship among ourselves,” gardener Gordon Rudd said. “You can’t just walk away when you have put so much work into it,” fellow gardener Rick Bolch said. Mrs Rudd said most of the groups that used the house were meeting at other venues.

Shanty Town Heritage Park While the South Islands West Coast is well known for its magnificent scenery and glaciers, no visit to the area is complete without experiencing Shantytown. The discovery of gold in 1864 led to a population “explosion” – from around 300 to almost 30,000 residents. Isolation, rugged terrain and extreme weather conditions produced stories of fortitude and ingenuity. Autumn lawns
M
y sa sfac on a er hubby mows the lawns is immense, even if the house is in a bit of disarray. I caught up with Roger Morgan from Ready Lawn and asked for a few ps on lawn care. We both agree a well-groomed lawn looks magnificent and adds to a property’s visual appeal and value. Lawns enhance one’s wellbeing. A li le foresight and an understanding of what a lawn needs during the year can ensure a healthy lawn and a happy owner! Lawn maintenance ac vi es done now will be beneficial all year.
Roger’s ps
Most important ac vi es are mowing and water management, followed by feeding, pest control, and ac vi es like dethatching.
Mowing Fine turf species like to be mowed short.
At home, a good height is around 20mm while Rye grass lawns can be at 30mm. Regular mowing is vital for a healthy lawn; preferably remove clippings during spring/autumn. Fine grasses, browntop, and fescue are best for reel mowing or well set rotary mowers.
method of applica on. Irriga on should not be required between April and October. A we ng agent three mes over summer assists with moisture reten on in soil, reducing the watering requirement. It’s a must on sloping and old or thatchy lawns for a be er lawn and a happy council.
Fer lising Fer lise around September, January, and April. Slow release specific lawn fer lisers are best as they slowly release nutrients over an eight to 12-week period. They reduce the mowing requirements, especially in the ini al weeks a er applica on.
Watering
Pests
Maintain soil moisture content between soaked and dry by one good watering per week, and two during very hot periods. Try the screwdriver test. Poke one into the lawn and pry up a piece of lawn. Assess soil moisture. If you can’t get it into the ground, the soil is most probably dry! Never water every day. There is no fixed rule on how long to water. insect prills. Follow packet instruc ons.
Weeds Spray with a selec ve herbicide. Many target individual weeds. Read and understand label before applying. Many disasters have occurred when non-selec ve herbicides have been applied to lawns.
Dethatching or scarifying Scarifying removes surplus thatch and helps keep the lawn vigorous and healthy. It’s best done during periods of rapid growth, such as spring and early autumn. There is a handy free lawn maintenance calendar at www.readylawn.co.nz that shows the monthly ac vi es and products required to maintain a good lawn.

However, fate conspires to bring the brothers together again after they both fall in

CANTERBURY super stock driver Malcolm Ngatai won’t be lacking motivation when he competes against some of the best drivers New Zealand has to offer at the annual Battle of the Stocks this weekend. The pairs championship, now into its 19th year, has grown into into one of the premier shows on the calendar at AmPro Tools Woodford Glen Speedway so as a leading driver Ngatai knows he needs to shine on both Friday and Saturday nights. A total of 32 of the best drivers in the country will attend the meeting, 16 of which will be from the North Island where the racing is fast and ultra competitive. Each of those drivers will be paired up with a South Islander; the pair race together for combined points and the drivers
with the highest total after Saturday night’s final heat will be crowned champions. Fresh back from a two-month campaign racing around the North Island, Ngatai is determined to shine in his own backyard after spending so much time away from his home track. “It’s very important that we do well,” he said. “We have a lot of friends and supporters here that we haven’t seen much of with being away this season, so we want to do the best we can in front of them.” He was expecting a tough race despite being on his home track. “It’s super stock racing, anything can happen in a contact grade. There’s so many top drivers coming and they all have a chance. It’s just a matter of both performing on the night.
Rugby World Cup coming to town THE Webb Ellis Cup will be paying Christchurch and Kaiapoi residents a visit this weekend when the Great Rugby Road Trip passes through town. The Rugby World Cup trophy will be on display at North Hagley Park on Saturday from 11am to 3pm and at the Kaiapoi Rugby Football Club on Monday from 3.30pm to 6.30pm. New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew said the road trip was about saying thank you to New Zealanders for their support during the world cup. “We’re hoping the tour rekindles the excitement of those magical six weeks and
encourages people to keep backing rugby,” he said. Other rugby silverware will also be on display and there will be a range of family activities. There will also be prizes on offer, including a chance to win one of 40 Investec Super Rugby jerseys, and an All Blacks test experience, including flights, accommodation and touchline seats at an All Blacks match this year.

A NEW fund, launched by Mainland Football, is aimed at helping children and youth from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to remain active in football. The Canterbury earthquakes were the catalyst for the club to push ahead with the Scorching Goal fund. New Zealand Football (NZF) initiated an earthquake appeal on behalf of Mainland Football that raised over $67,000. The bulk of the donations have come from Japan Football Association, Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and NZF. Mainland Football fundraised $13,000 itself and approved an additional $50,000 contribution from reserves to kick start the fund with $130,000. Mainland Football chief executive Mike Coggan said it was about giving children and youth the opportunity to continue to participate in football. “This fund will advantage a range of participants from young kids starting out in football who require support with payment of subscriptions, to talented youngsters who have financial challenges as a result of being involved in many of our football development programmes including regional representation.” Initial annual grants of between $10,000 and $15,000 will be made for club fees, representative tournament fees and federation academy or programme fees. Applications are considered twice yearly with closing dates of March 30 and August 31 each year.

Historic eastern suburbs buildings to be repaired RICHMOND’S Avebury House and the Linwood Community Arts Centre will be repaired and quake-strengthened after the Christchurch City Council’s approval. Work on both is expected to begin in May. Avebury House is used as a community centre and for functions. It was moderately damaged in the September quake and suffered more damage in last February’s earthquake. The council will spend $43,174 on repairs and strengthening the building to 100 percent of the New Building Standard (NBS). Linwood Community Arts Centre is listed in the city plan as a group one heritage building and registered with the New Zealand Historic
Places Trust as a Category II Historic Place. Repairs will allow for continued use in Linwood. It had some damage in September, but was severely affected in February. The council will fund $35,994 and it will be strengthened to 90 percent of the NBS. A building under 34 percent of the NBS is considered to be quake-prone. The council has set a minimum of 67 percent of NBS for all of the buildings it owns. The Facilities Rebuild Plan project provides a framework for future decisions about the council’s 1600 facilities following the earthquakes that have occurred in the region since September 2010. Shirley students win science scholarships Gina McKenzie
THREE young Banks Avenue School students in Shirley are amazed at the new mathematics and science skills they are learning, thanks to a year-long scholarship from Lifted Learning. The scholarships worth almost $5000 were offered to 12 nominated students from schools with a rating of decile six or lower. Reuben Willis, 10, Caleb Heyns and Jed Rimmer, both 8, were selected for the programme, which aims to extend young people’s understanding of science and mathematics. They travel to Ilam School’s science and technology unit to attend weekly classes run by philanthropist Dr William Joyce. Reuben said he loved the classes as they provided hands-on learning opportunities in a fun environment. For Jed and Caleb, levers and pivots have come to life in their classes where they enjoy meeting other young mathematicians and scientists from around the city. Reuben, Jed and Caleb are excited about
doing more hands-on learning and experiments in their classes for the rest of the year. “We are really looking forward to working with chemicals, and hopefully we’ll get to do some noisy, exciting experiments.”
Passionate learners: Banks Avenue School students Reuben Willis, 10, Caleb Heyns and Jed Rimmer, both 8, are excited about winning scholarships to attend a year-long science and mathematics extension programme.
Christchurch gymnasts shine FOUR gymnasts from the Christchurch School of Gymnastics returned with a huge haul of trophies from the Alohafest and Gymnastics in Paradise international competitions in Hawaii. The 13-year-old girls’ spoils included a 3.4 kg tiki won by the team in their level eight competition at the Gymnastics in Paradise competition. Competitors were from Hawaii, mainland USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. Sinead Kingston White (Merivale, Stacs) placed
second overall at the competition after achieving second place on the bar and third place on the vault. Paris Kingston White (Merivale, Stacs) placed first on the floor and third on both the beam and bar. Rosie Griffioen (Queenspark, Avonside) was first in her grade, with first on the vault and second on both the bar and floor. Sophie Inwood (Rangiora, Avonside) was third on the beam. At the Alohafest, Sinead placed first overall, with first
place on the beam and second place on the vault and bar. Rosie was first on bar and Sophie was third on the vault. The girls train for an average of 21 hours per week. “For the club, it is very pleasing to see these results and show that our standing in the international gymnastics world is well-deserved,” said Christchurch School of Gymnastics chief executive Avril Enslow. The girls qualified for the New Zealand team after nationals last November.

BURWOOD Academy of Independent Living (BAIL) will translate a book on living with spinal injuries from Swedish into English, thanks to a $5200 grant received last week. Once the book Living with Spinal Cord Injuries is translated into English, it will benefit not only New Zealanders, but also English speakers living with spinal injuries worldwide. The ANZ Staff Foundation, which provided the grant, is a payroll charity programme where staff make a donation from their salary each week,
which is matched by the bank. The foundation has donated $2 million to charity since 2000. Pictured with the cheque are, from left: Jo Goodhew, National MP for the community and voluntary sector; Dr Deborah Snell, academic director Burwood Academy Trust; Kevin Hawthorn, chairman ANZ Staff Foundation; Nicky Wagner, MP Christchurch Central; and George Scrimshaw, chairperson Burwood Academy Trust.
Over 1000 new homes for West Belfast MORE than 1300 new houses can be built in North West Belfast following an Environment Court decision. The decision addresses the increased demand for land following the earthquakes. It also helps the Christchurch City Council meet the City Plan’s objectives. Mayor Bob Parker said he was delighted by the decision. “This is a big step forward for the city and will result in the release of land for housing. “There is huge demand in the city now for new sections and I am pleased with the Environment Court’s decision.” Along with the 1300 resident dwellings, two mixed-use commercial areas will service the growth area.
Metro bus in demand THE number of people using Metro services in Christchurch is increasing. New figures show that 1,058,605 trips were taken on Metro across Greater Christchurch during February 2012. The previous high since the February earthquake was November 2011, when 967,303 trips were made. “The financial return from people paying fares compared to the total cost of running the public network was also up to 37 percent in February. “This is good to see, given that we are aiming for a 50 percent return from fares as required by the New Zealand Transport Agency. It’s a considerable improvement when you consider that in April last year the revenue return against the cost of running the network was just 21 percent,” Environment Canterbury’s passenger services manager David Stenhouse said. Mr Stenhouse said more customers continue to use cross suburban routes like the Orbiter, which connects suburban malls and places like Pioneer Stadium and the university. The new silver Comet, another cross suburban service in the north-west, is also gaining patronage after being launched at the end of last year. “As well as meeting the changed needs of customers, Environment Canterbury needs to run a Metro system, which is economically sustainable and gets half its running cost from fare-paying passengers. More changes to ensure Metro continues to make progress in this area will occur as time goes on.”
Urban design for the highest-density area and the main commercial area will be restricted to achieve good urban design outcomes. Landowners can now begin the process of subdividing their land for residential development. The decision of the Environment Court can still be appealed to the High Court. The appeal period will close next Thursday and appeals can be on points of law only.

The greenest school in Christchurch Chris Tobin
ST PATRICK’S School in Bryndwr looked as though it had been invaded by leprechauns and other characters in green last Friday. The school, named in honour of the patron saint of Ireland, was celebrating the saint’s feast day with all sorts of Irish-inspired
shenanigans and games. The celebration was a day early since St Patrick’s Day fell on a Saturday this year. “We’ve a very strong Irish heritage at the school started by Irish nuns,” principal Aaron Richards said. “A lot of Irish Catholic families send
their children here, from Woodend to Rolleston.” Mr Richards said that the celebration’s activities included a special treat of green ice cream. “And then on Sunday, we were with the parish (St Matthews) to celebrate Mass.”

School repair delays causing frustration Tania Butterfield

ST JAMES Anglican Church in Harewood will celebrate its 150th anniversary next month. The historic church held its first service on the Harewood Road site on April 13, 1862. Church caretaker Dorothy Andrew said the present church building, designed by Richard Harman and built in 1935, suffered minor damage in the Canterbury earthquakes compared with others. “We were lucky,” she said. The church’s country surroundings contributed to its “special” feeling. “It’s a little country church on the edge of town. There’s a country atmosphere. We just
seem to be different than other churches. We’re lucky to have such lovely surroundings,” Mrs Andrew said. St James’ 30 to 50 parishioners are quite active in the Harewood community and the church often holds fairs, boot sales, and barbeques. The anniversary celebrations include a “conversation only” reunion on Friday, April 13, a community fair, church open day, historical display, and dinner on the Saturday and a special church service with Bishop Victoria Matthews preaching on Sunday morning.

Amy proves top accounting scholar Tania Butterfield
SHE may not have enjoyed accounting in high school, but former Villa Maria College student Amy Rice’s hard work in the subject earned her the title of top accounting student in the country. Miss Rice, who is now studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce at Canterbury University, was named Top Scholar in Accounting for the 2011 school year. She will receive her award with top students in other subjects at a ceremony hosted by the governor-general in Wellington. Miss Rice said she was “really surprised” to take out the country’s top award in accounting. She was studying accounting at university, but not by On the road: Rev Mark Chamberlain has the Christchurch Airport Marathon in his sights.
Vicar running for a good cause Chris Tobin
THE Vicar of Fendalton Mark Chamberlain is planning to burn some leather and kilograms in a good cause. He is training to run the Christchurch Airport Marathon on June 3 and is calling on sponsors to help him raise funds to strengthen and rebuild his quake-damaged Fendalton church. “I’ve already raised a couple of thousand dollars, but I would like to get up to $10,000,” he said. The church has been closed ever since the February 22 earthquake last year when shaking moved the tower northwards, separating it from the main structure. The church walls also sustained damage and will have to be strengthened up to 67 per cent of the new building code. The cost of the work is unknown as talks with insurers continue. All of the money will have to be fundraised. Rev Chamberlain said the parish was still in good heart, but losing the church had been terribly inconvenient as people were not able to get married in the church of their choice. Services had to be re-jigged and held in the church hall, which had a capacity for 120 people, 30 less than for the church. A runner for 12 years, Rev Chamberlain is now out, pounding the pavements four times a week. Although he has competed in half marathons and trail runs, Christchurch’s marathon will be his first outing over the 42.1km distance. “I’m challenging the parishioners to take part in other events that will be part of the marathon,” he said. Besides the marathon, there will be a half marathon, 10km run walk or wheelchair, and Kids Mara’Fun races over 5.5km and 2.5km. If anyone wants to sponsor Rev Chamberlain, they can collect a sponsorship form from the St Barnabas parish office.

choice. “I didn’t want to do accounting at university, but you have to because it’s a compulsory first-year subject. I’m not a huge fan of [accounting]. I would’ve preferred to do well in economics,” she said. She accredited her accounting teacher Mike Baugh for helping her achieve the award. “He was a really good teacher, so for him to have a student get an outstanding scholarship and top scholar is really nice,” she said. The cycling scene
with Paul Odlin

Traffic rule changes ARE you aware of the not one, but two, traffic rule changes occurring this Sunday? A quick survey might find an awareness of the debate and prospective change to the ‘left turn versus right turn’ rule, but the rule change at ‘uncontrolled ‘T’ intersections (uncontrolled means when there are no signs or signals to tell you what to do), which has greater impact upon cyclists’ safety, might not be so well known. To clarify, the first rule change will require all traffic turning right to give way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning
left. This applies at crossroads, T-intersections, and driveways where both vehicles are facing each other with no signs or signals or the same signs or signals. The second rule change is at uncontrolled T-intersections where all traffic from a terminating road (bottom of the T) will have to give way to all traffic on a continuing road (top of the T). This will bring it into line with T-intersections where there are Stop or Give Way signs on the terminating road. What this means to us cyclists is that we need to be aware at intersections when turning left, to
keep left as right-turning motorists may not be aware of the new rule and/or assume there is enough room for both to turn simultaneously. But more importantly, at uncontrolled T-intersections when turning right from the top of the T, you have right of way over traffic turning right from the bottom, but don’t assume they will give way! Ride defensively like you’re invisible to motorists and be patient of the motoring public learning these new law changes. Keep safe, ride strong. Oddy
