HAGLEY Park remains Sport Canterbury’s favoured site for the planned metro sports hub facility despite opposition the suggestion has stirred up among many Christchurch residents. The facility, combining swimming pools and indoor courts was proposed as the centre for a sports precinct in the city, in Christchurch City Council’s draft central city plan. Sport Canterbury chief executive Geoff Barry said the facility needed to be on or near Hagley Park for the city to get the most out of it. “We as a trust continue to have that conversation around the central city plan which is obviously a closed debate now in terms of submissions, but we’ve made a submission and we will speak to that when we get a chance.” Mr Barry said being on the park would be preferable to being next to it and the further away it was from the park, the more undesirable the location would be. The original proposal of using the Red Bus site on the corner of Moorhouse Ave and Fitzgerald Ave was a poor option for this reason, he said. Mr Barry considered even having the facility close by but Gina McKenzie separated from the park would make holding some sporting evendifficult in thosebecause areas with largesuch sections of need empty “Something that seems insignificant beevents very more COMMUNITY action could help solve a spate two of the properties people were asleep inside of issues as the to houses. important so I would encourage people in the traffic of eastern suburbs arson attacks, according to their houses at the time. manage between the facility and the park. “IfCricket someone calls the fireLee service we will The residents escaped uninjured but the area to report anything suspicious.” Fire Service Christchurch area commander Jon Canterbury chief executive Germon said aim they be there within six minutes so we on arefuture still Overgrown vegetation and abandoned houses escalation in the arson attacks had alarmed Mr Graham. were stillto working through a process with council very muchHagley a part of eastern Christchurch.” in the eastern suburbs provided fuel for plans arsonfor upgrading The series of arson attacks over the past three Graham.
