HAGLEY Park remains Sport Canterbury’s favoured site for the planned metro sports hub facility despite opposition the suggestion has stirred up among many Christchurch residents. The facility, combining swimming pools and indoor courts was proposed as the centre for a sports precinct in the city, in Christchurch City Council’s draft central city plan. Sport Canterbury chief executive Geoff Barry said the facility needed to be on or near Hagley Park for the city to get the most out of it. “We as a trust continue to have that conversation around the central city plan which is obviously a closed debate now in terms of submissions, but we’ve made a submission and we will speak to that when we get a chance.” Mr Barry said being on the park would be preferable to being next to it and the further away it was from the park, the more undesirable the location would be. The original proposal of using the Red Bus site on the corner of Moorhouse Ave and Fitzgerald Ave was a poor option for this reason, he said. Mr Barry considered even having the facility close by but Gina McKenzie separated from the park would make holding some sporting evendifficult in thosebecause areas with largesuch sections of need empty “Something that seems insignificant beevents very more COMMUNITY action could help solve a spate two of the properties people were asleep inside of issues as the to houses. important so I would encourage people in the traffic of eastern suburbs arson attacks, according to their houses at the time. manage between the facility and the park. “IfCricket someone calls the fireLee service we will The residents escaped uninjured but the area to report anything suspicious.” Fire Service Christchurch area commander Jon Canterbury chief executive Germon said aim they be there within six minutes so we on arefuture still Overgrown vegetation and abandoned houses escalation in the arson attacks had alarmed Mr Graham. were stillto working through a process with council very muchHagley a part of eastern Christchurch.” in the eastern suburbs provided fuel for plans arsonfor upgrading The series of arson attacks over the past three Graham. The project, called ‘Sing your heart out Christchurch’, will see Ms Burney performing uplifting songs, including well-known numbers such as What a wonderful world and Happy days are here again, with the audience given lyric sheets and encouraged to sing along. Glittering prizes for Mainland Press who has supported us.” The winning front pages were for March 8 which featured a survivor of the PGC collapse in the February 22 earthquake and for November 2 with the reopening of City Mall. The advertising feature was for Mainland Press’ spring/summer 2011 fashion supplement. Mr Smulders said he was especially delighted that his team had been recognised for their efforts in relaunching Bay Harbour News. “It was a decision we made right after the June 23 earthquake that further devastated the Bay Harbour area and we wanted to do what we could to help the community get back to some kind of normality.” Editor Chris Tobin said on February 22 last year the Bay Harbour News was just about to be sent to the printer at 12.51pm when the earthquake struck. “As a result of that, this issue of the paper was not distributed and for

MAINLAND Press was a major winner in the 53rd annual New Zealand Community Newspapers Association’s (NZCNA) awards at the weekend. The newspaper won the Brian Burmester Award for best front page for all members of the NZCNA and the George Warburton Award for best advertising feature or supplement. Another Mainland Press publication, Bay Harbour News, won the Maurice Kitching Award for community involvement. Mainland Press managing director Pier Smulders said winning the awards was a tremendous recognition of the efforts of his team during what had been an extremely challenging year for a local business. “That we were able to win these awards without the backing of the resources of a major media group is credit to the determination of our staff and the support of our readers and advertisers. Problems bubble on in green-zoned Southshore Gina McKenzie

PUDDLES of sewage bubbling up along driveways have left green-zone Southshore West residents fearing for their health as winter approaches. Maggie Campbell’s Rockinghorse Road home was one of 203 Southshore West properties zoned green last Friday by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) while the remaining 198 properties closest to the estuary were red zoned. Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee said the zoning decision had proved “particularly challenging” due to the nature of estuary land. “The options for remediation were

less clear than in the areas zoned earlier [because of] major lateral spreading along the estuary in last February’s quake, in some places over a metre.” Mrs Campbell was “devastated” over being green zoned and was extremely worried about the health hazards posed by sewage puddles lining her driveway and the damaged drainage system. “We have to stay here for who knows how long and smell the stench of sewage every day. “When it rains or if there’s a high tide we can see it bubbling up in all the potholes and it has backed up and flowed towards our house before.”

Southshore Residents’ Association chairperson Bill Simpson described the pooling of sewage as “a shocking situation” and said he had constantly raised the issue with Cera and the Christchurch City Council. “It’s a third world health hazard and I will be raising the issue again at meetings with Cera this week. “We’ve brought it up many times and in our recent survey we found that up to 20 percent of Southshore residents are not connected to the main sewer line. “They are so slow to fix it and the situation is complicated by who

is responsible-sometimes it’s the insurance companies. Meanwhile, Pukeko Place resident Deanna Gracie described being greenzoned as “bittersweet” because she was concerned about the drainage systems along with the length of time it would take to rebuild her neighbourhood. “I’m happy to be able to stay here and to have certainty but I’m worried about the disease and health risks of sewage since the system isn’t working properly. “It backs up really quickly and it will only get worse if we have a lot of rain this winter.

“They’ve got to keep on pumping it and get it working properly.” Mrs Gracie also felt that the eastern suburbs had been forgotten. “I feel like we’ve been forgotten over here like a dirty secret and it’s hard to tell how long this rebuild will take but it’s not going to be soon.” The Southshore West zoning was the final decision in almost 11 months of flat land residential zoning in Christchurch. Mr Brownlee said Cera was still on track to meet a June 30 deadline to zone remaining white-zoned properties in the Port Hills.

Private v public ownership, which is best? Mainland Press asked Dr Eric Crampton, senior lecturer in economics at the University of Canterbury what he thought of Government suggestions that Christchurch city-owned assets should be sold. Here are his thoughts. reconstruction. The “short-term vs long-term” aspect of selling council-owned assets should be viewed similarly. What really matters is whether that asset is better owned by council or better owned privately. Some assets are best owned publicly; Orion, the lines company, should probably remain majority-owned by local council. A fully privatised power lines company would wind up being subject to public monopoly regulations that would mean there’s little gain from having it in private as compared to public ownership; private owners then would be willing to pay council just enough for the asset to offset council’s loss of dividends. So there isn’t a lot of difference between

WHILE it’s true that many council assets pay dividends, it’s also true that they would pay dividends to a private owner. And, a private owner expecting to earn large returns from an asset will be willing to pay more for that asset. So when a dividendproducing asset is shifted from public ownership to private ownership, council is really compensated for the loss of the future dividends by the current lump sum payment. Is it “short-term thinking” when the Government sells bonds, getting a pile of money now in exchange for a flow of debt repayments that continue over time? Probably not, and especially when we’re selling bonds to pay for things like earthquake

council’s selling some shares in Orion and council’s selling some bonds, so long as people are willing to buy debt from council. But other assets could well fare better in private management. Last I’d checked, council owned more than three-quarters of Lyttelton Port of Christchurch; there’s reasonable reason to expect not only that the port would fare better privately but also that you’d get a decent price for it with an insurance-funded refurbishing of facilities. Standard economic theory says that you should pay for things like earthquake recovery through a mix of debt, reduced current expenditures on non-earthquake activities, and future tax increases. Selling off current assets like the port that can plausibly be better managed privately than publicly can make even more sense than taking on current debt. Tax increases like those currently proposed make sense if council is having a hard time raising money in the debt markets and doesn’t

have assets like the port, or Red Bus, that could be sold off entirely. But council does have those Dr Eric Crampton assets. Finally, we also have to think about the uses to which any revenues from either asset sales or tax increases are put. I’m amazed that council is considering taxing us to fund expensive stadium options so we’re better able to host international test matches; their priorities are perhaps a bit different from mine. While it makes sense to sell off assets like the port to help rebuild our roads and sewers, if we sold off the port to put a roof on a stadium, a hundred economists around the country would have to go to the emergency department for “banging-head-on-desk-related” injuries.

From the editor

Chris Tobin editor@mainlandpress.co.nz

Hanging on to the family silver Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker has come out saying Prime Minister John Key and Local Government Minister David Carter should back off in pressuring the city to sell shares in its assets to fund the city rebuild. Mr Parker believes the council could fund the recovery without resorting to asset sales. He considers the council-owned assets are well managed and generate significant revenue for the city. The concern for ratepayers is that with the high expense of a massive rebuild, there could be a significant rise in what they will have to pay. Yet, last week Cr Helen Broughton said the city’s rates were 15 per cent lower than would be the case due to the revenue return from the assets. One can presume that revenue from the assets would continue to act as a buffer to any possible spiralling rates increase.

Christchurch has an enviable list of cityowned assets. Christchurch City Holdings, the city’s company, owns 89.3 percent of power network Orion, 75 percent of Christchurch International Airport (the remaining 25 percent by government), 79.3 percent of the Lyttelton Port Company and all of City Care, Red Bus, Enable Services and EcoCentral. Besides Mr Key and Mr Carter, there is a strong lobby within the city, among them Peter Townsend, chief executive of the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce, who say the Government is talking commonsense on the matter. It might be commonsense for the Government, but is it commonsense for this city? Flogging off the family silver is often employed as a quick-fix solution to an immediate problem. As time rolls on, it is usually regretted.

Let’s protect our strategic assets Last weekend I decided to be selfish, do the pressure to sell these, to offset the costs of the earthquakes. Fendalton Library opens to the public again A newly repaired and earthquakestrengthened Fendalton Library re-opened this week. Fendalton Library and Service Centre closed in November last year after a Detailed Engineering Evaluation (DEE) assessment showed it needed earthquake repairs and strengthening. The engineering assessment was done as part of Christchurch City Council’s commitment to carry out more intensive engineering assessments of its commercial buildings under its Facilities Rebuild Project. The Council gave approval for this work, which included strengthening the facility to 100 percent of the New Building Standard (NBS), to go  ahead in February. The service centre counter re-opened last month as repair and strengthening work was completed in that part of the building first. Libraries and Information Unit Manager Carolyn Robertson says the  library’s re-opening on Monday 21  May will be a welcome milestone for  the community. “The library is an important community hub in the north-west of the city and we’re looking forward to welcoming back many of our regular customers and, hopefully, some new ones.”

This is the first time the library has been fully open since the February 2011 earthquake. Although it  partly re-opened to the public in October last year after being used as temporary offices by Council staff, it closed again when engineers highlighted the need for earthquake repairs and strengthening. She says the earthquake repairs have given staff the opportunity to look at how the library space can be improved for its customers. “The walls have been freshly painted and we’ve changed the layout of the library to make better use of the natural light coming in through the large library windows. We’ve also deliberately kept the shelving low so that more light comes into the building.” New service kiosks, which are being introduced to libraries across Christchurch, will make it easier for customers to issue materials independently. Staff will work alongside customers to help them use the new equipment. The library is open on weekdays from 9am-8pm and from 10am-4pm on Saturday. This is a return to the timetable that was in place before the February 2011 earthquake. For  more information about library services visit: www.christchurchcitylibraries.com

he lovely warm tones of winter are here again at KOOKY including Boston red, violet storm, autumn sunset, deep teal, vanilla suede and dove grey along with the essential black and white. Colour blocking is a big look for the season but of course, in the true KOOKY way, we’ve broken these strong colours with plenty of vertical movement in the form of panelling, darting and fabric manipulation in order to create that important slim line. This season is all about easy, mix and match separates to suit everyone. The cotton, linen and merino yarns are dyed in our own colours so they tie in beautifully with all of the separates. Whether it’s a beautiful

casual wardrobe, sophisticated corporate wear or a stunning special occasion outfit you are after, KOOKY has something to suit. Technology to enhance your lifestyle T

he earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 have affected us all and in many instances prevented us from carrying out our normal routines. Numerous community centres, church halls and other places that we may have visited regularly to practise our hobbies and interests have either been demolished or are still awaiting engineer inspections. Any rebuild, if at all possible, could be years away. The SeniorNet organisations in the Christchurch area, which for more than 15 years have been helping people over 50 to become more competent in using a computer and thus enabling them to take a full part in today’s information technology society, have not been immune. Many of them have had to find different premises or have waited for repairs to buildings to enable them to continue offering their tutoring services. Following these moves and repairs, all of the SeniorNets in Christchurch and surrounds are now fully operational at their Learning Centres located in the City, Ferrymead, New Brighton, Papanui, Riccarton, Rangiora and Ashburton. To celebrate this, to better promote SeniorNet within our communities and hopefully to encourage new people to learn to use their computers with confidence, a ‘S@vvy Seniors Expo’ is to be hosted by the Learning Centres and

will be held at the CBS Canterbury Arena Concourse on May 24 to 25. The main theme will be: ‘Technology to enhance your lifestyle’. Support is coming from major sponsors Noel Leeming, TelstraClear, Freeview, Suzuki, Nestlé and GrownUps plus the SeniorNet Federation of New Zealand. In addition to these well-known brands, many local companies will also be exhibiting their products and services with special promotions and discounts, including the chance to win an iPad tablet. As well as a wide range of exhibits to look at, seminars and demonstrations will take place throughout the event.

Uni mentors help Hornby high schoolers The university and school have joined forces to pilot the programme for year 11 to 13 students. The programme will run for 16 weeks involving 35 university mentors helping students prepare for their term three exams. Hornby High School principal Richard Edmundson said the programme was part of building learning pathways for the pupils. “These mentors have recently left high school and have firsthand experience of how to be successful in [school qualification] NCEA. In their mentoring they pass this valuable experience on to the Hornby pupils and assist them in creating pathways for their tertiary study,” he said. It is planned to expand the mentoring programme to the wider Hornby learning community, which includes Branston Intermediate, Gilberthorpe, Hornby Primary, Sockburn, South Hornby, St Bernadette’s and Templeton schools, next year. Learning inspiration: Hornby High School student Phillip Goundar, “This will give us a seamless educational pathway from 16, is mentored by University of Canterbury engineering student preschool through to tertiary study,” Mr Edmundson said. All are looking forward to the experience and we are looking at ways where one of the eight meetings will be held on campus rather than the school,” she said. Mentoring is not new for the university, which successfully launched a homework support project last year. Ms Hall hoped the university would be able to double the number of mentors in its team next year, while Mr Edmundson said a strong Hornby community would be further enhanced by this type of programme. “With time, we want to see our kids who are in this programme becoming mentors themselves and assisting the University of Canterbury mentors to support the younger pupils together,” he said.

Student seeks new parking spot Jade Pengelly and Sally Murphy

A CHRISTCHURCH student was centimetres away from losing his beloved car in Hornby after a trailer became disconnected from a truck, nearly crushing his car last week. Lachlan Poole, 22, who studies at the Southern Institute of Technology in Hornby, received a text from a fellow student soon after arriving at class on May 15 telling him his car appeared to be trapped under a truck’s trailer. He discovered the trailer had disconnected from a truck and was perched precariously over his car. His car’s bonnet was halfway under the trailer but was miraculously undamaged. “The bonnet was covered by the trailer but it hadn’t touched it, only a bit of dust.” Mr Poole bought the car five months ago and parks it in the same spot on Buchanans Road every day. “I won’t be parking there from now on though,” he said. Hornby resident Glenis Hearn heard the

crash from inside her house and hurried outside to investigate. “I was standing in my kitchen and I heard this loud bang, it was like a big metal crack,” she said. She suspected one of the parked cars had been hit and was surprised to see how close the trailer was to damaging Mr Poole’s car. Police diverted traffic as a crane lifted the trailer back onto the truck. Ms Hearn said accidents were common along Buchanans Road but she had not seen one like this before.

Leap of faith for Sydenham business SYDENHAM attraction Clip ‘N Climb’s directors say a $150,000 revamp shows they’re confident in the recovering Christchurch tourism industry. Clip ‘N Climb Christchurch was the first of what’s now an international climbing franchise business, and directors John Targett and Tim Wethey said they had no hesitation in re-investing. “This is a time when other businesses are closing down or leaving the city. Clip ‘N Climb is flourishing and we are confident to reinvest in our business and in the Christchurch economy,” Mr Targett said. The improved facility was officially reopened on Saturday, May 12, with a speech delivered by deputy mayor Ngaire Button, who thanked the company for demonstrating confidence in the Canterbury economy and

for their export success. Crusaders rugby player Tyler Bleyendaal made a spectacular entrance down the new eight-metre-high Vertical Drop Slide to ‘cut the ribbon’. As well as the slide, the latest attractions include a taller, new-look Leap of Faith; a new Stairway to Heaven, a maze themed Amazing and the vine-like Triffid, inspired by the carnivorous fictional plant species in the 1951 novel The Day of the Triffids. The Clip ‘N Climb franchise began with the Christchurch arena being built at The Roxx Climbing Centre in Sydenham six years ago. Now there are Clip ‘N Climbs all over the country, including Auckland, Wanaka and Ohakune, and internationally there are two in Canada, one in England and another underway in Cambodia.

Hi Prime Minister: Cashmere Primary School students, from left, Luke Blackie, Dylan Corkindale, Olivia Willems, Sam Willems and Samantha Kirkness were visited by Prime Minister John Key at the school last Thursday, May 17. Sam had earlier written a letter to Mr Key inviting him to a barbeque at his house, to which Mr Key replied saying he would like to meet Sam and visit his school. Sam and his older sister Olivia lost their mum in the February 22 earthquake last year. Photo: Beccy Healey

a Boutique Hair and Fashion pride themselves on making you feel a million dollars when you walk out of their salon. The friendly team are highly skilled who listen to what their clients want and are sensitive to your individual needs. Each of their stylists are fully qualified which is hard to find nowadays. You can be assured you will be able to relax and feel pampered at an affordable price. Check out their new location at 210 Colombo Street. The beautiful salon is a sunny villa with a rustic vintage and French feel, which captures a stunning view of the cashmere hills. After the February earthquake, La Boutique had to find new premises because its site at St Martins mall had to be demolished. Although it was a difficult time, owner

Sonya Mbonyinshuti says “We have now come back bigger and better than before and are feeling excited and positive about La Boutique’s future in our city”. Sonya and her team have been part of designing and directing hair for many years on photo shoots and catwalk shows, including one of New Zealand’s most successful fashion show ‘Style Christchurch’. She has worked alongside some of New Zealand’s top models, like Miss New Zealand 2009, Magdalena Schoeman, and supported her selected charity ‘Variety’. “I work with the best team ever, Cath Broome (manager), Sya Downie (style director), Joanna Clarke (Style Director) and Michelae (salon assistant). The very best part of my job is seeing them grow, flourish and expand their skills in hairdressing and also in their personal lives,” Says Sonya.

“It is evident from the first moment you walk in the salon the atmosphere of team work, friendliness, hard work, and creativity we all have to make you feel and experience something unforgettable. This is all credit to each of the staff employed here. We don’t just want you to be happy with your hair, but to come away feeling uplifted inside and out.” La Boutique cater for all your hair needs, specialising in women’s and men’s cuts and colours, along with creative hair ups for weddings and balls. Keep up to date by visiting their website www.laboutiquehair.co.nz or joining La Boutique on their Facebook page. Open Tuesday and Friday, 9am to 5.30pm, Wednesday and Thursday, 9am to 8pm and Saturday, 9am to 2pm. Call now for an appointment on 332 3285.

Fabulous hair for winter F or a new hairstyle or colour this winter, look no further than Sirocco Hair Studio in Mt Pleasant. The salon is in a handy location for that refreshed look without having to travel into the city. Until the end of June they are offering an amazing special. You can receive a colour, foils, cut and blow wave for $95 (normally $140) - some conditions may apply. Professional senior stylist Nicola Smith has owned Sirocco Hair Studio for over 11 years and has built up a loyal clientele base from around the Bay Harbour area as well as other parts of the city. Testament to their skill and professionalism is that many former local clients have returned to the studio despite living in other parts of Christchurch. New to the team at Sirocco Hair Studio are

Trina and Hayley. Trina has a wide variety of experience and has worked at another local salon as well as being a trained naturopath and massage therapist. Hayley is a fully qualified senior stylist and has also returned to work in the area. With both Juanita and Kerry expecting their first babies in July, it is reassuring to have experienced stylists join the team. The team at Sirocco Hair Studio knows how important it is to look after your hair that’s why they only use De Lorenzo colour and products, which are environmentally friendly. The naturally derived De Lorenzo range contains eight certified organic ingredients. “The colour we use is very low in ammonia, has no PPDs and is a lot gentler on the hair

and scalp. The shampoos contain no sodium laurel sulphate, parabens or propylene glycol – perfect for the chemical-sensitive scalp. The whole range is colour-safe to give your hair colour the longest life possible,” says Nicola. Right now, there is a De Lorenzo product pack on special, where you get a bottle of shampoo, conditioner and a detangler, valued at $90, for only $55. Be in quick before it goes! Pop in and see the friendly team at Sirocco Hair Studio in McCormack’s Bay at the bottom of Soleares Avenue. They are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 5pm, with a late night on Thursday and Saturday from 9.30am. Look and feel fabulous for winter! Phone 384 1743.

If you would like a consultation, the Beautifully Curly shop is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 14 Gerald Street, Lincoln. “I’ve tried every single product on my

mbrace your curly hair and keep it looking fabulous with Beautifully Curly, an online shop for hair care products created for curly hair. Owner Sharon has also recently opened a shop in Lincoln where she is happy to provide consultations and advice on how to get the best out of her products, which include well respected brands such as Jessicurl, Curls, MopTop and Curly Hair Solutions - all exclusive to Beautifully Curly. “We are passionate about curly hair and only source and stock the best environmentally friendly products formulated specifically for all curl types, most of which are not available anywhere else in New Zealand. As far as we are concerned there is nothing more unique and beautiful than curly hair,” says Sharon. Sharon set up Beautifully Curly online shop only a year ago after failing to find the right products for her two curly haired children. “Growing up with hard to manage hair and being a parent of curly haired children, I understand how difficult it is to tame unruly locks without the tears, tantrums and frustration.” The secret is to moisturise your hair to prevent dry, tangled and frizzy curls, Sharon says. “Not all curls are created the same and as a result each curl type needs to be maintained and cared for differently.” With customers all over New Zealand and Australia and offering free New Zealand shipping for online purchases, Beautifully Curly’s hairstyling products and accessories were created by individuals and hairdressers passionate about curly hair and who

Stockists of New Parts for Motor Vehicles from 1930-Today

They are able to carry out mechanical warranty servicing and repairs for all major warranty companies and are also MTA approved. What Jody can do under the one huge roof is almost unlimited. He is wrecking (dismantling) Subarus (trading as Subaru WReX) on the premises as well as German vehicles – providing good Subaru and German car parts, plus having new German car parts available on site. Of his knowledge on German cars, coupled with his range of service tools, there isn’t a lot he can’t diagnose or repair. He has been working together with a friend to bring in service tools. It’s teamwork which will work to ensure they have the right tools and diagnostic capabilities. Clunie Automotive, 272 Tuam Street (between Madras and Barbadoes Streets), phone 379 2677; email: thegermancardoctor@gmail.com.

f size counts, then the owners of Subarus and all German cars could not go past Clunie Automotive and The German Car Doctor at 272 Tuam Street for all their automotive diagnostic and repair work. Under the old-established Clunie Automotive name, Jody and Kirsteen have been trading at Tuam Street since February, in premises that are big enough to handle all his diverse activities. Jody has been in the trade for 17 years and has specialised in German vehicles for 12 years. With his knowledge of German vehicles, he is known as The German Car Doctor – working with Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz and VW. His staff also specialises in Subarus, but the workshop handles all repair work on any vehicle with ease. They also do warrants of fitness (cars, trailers and motorbikes), wheel alignments, tyres (fitting and balancing), engine rebuilds, servicing and much more.

EUROWAY G2

NEW FROM

with Pete Smith

pete.smith@ctv.co.nz

IRB one step forward, two back The IRB has decided to implement some law changes during the upcoming season. It must be pointed out that these changes are going to be trialled, and depending on the outcomes they may well be introduced into the law book for the future. One law trial that I really do applaud is the proposal that at scrum, ruck or maul time, the ball can only be held for a maximum of five seconds before play has to be made of it, or the opposition team will be given the ball. We have all seen examples of this where the halfback stands at the back and looks around for a long time to sort out what are his best options, which frustrates me. The other time it happens is when time is running out and the team in front on the scoreboard “stuffs it up their jumpers” and runs the clock down. The opposition have no chance to gain the ball unless they do it illegally and incur a penalty. When Webb Ellis picked the ball up and ran with it, he did it because for him ball in hand made for rugby to be a spectacle not a dour scrap. At present, the ball is only in play for approximately 37 minutes in an 80-minute match. With the ticket prices and pay to view television, this is not great value for money. So, I say, make the players have to do something

So easy, single handed installation, tilts clear of the tailgate or boot, carries 3 bikes, taillights and number plate holder.

with the ball, not halt the play. Added to this is the demand for the player to convert the try inside 90 seconds. In other words, “get on with it!” On the other side of the ledger is the proposed introduction of the TMO being able to go back and rule on infringements that occurred before or in the scoring of the try. How far back? From when the ball was kicked off to start play! God help us there is enough time spent checking whether a try was actually scored or not when in the old days the man with the whistle called it as he saw it. Sure, the ref didn’t always get it right but isn’t that the human factor that legends and debates were all about? In my opinion, the game has been far too sanitised as it is. I didn’t mind a bit of biffo, not thuggery, and physically fit men trying to get the upper hand. Testosterone flows through men playing sport, and rugby used to be a way of getting rid of it. Nowadays, every move is examined and we ask officials to adjudicate on what they thought they may have seen and if they’re in doubt we’ll put the onus on the bloke upstairs! The game has too many laws already and is becoming a mystery to the fans and the players have no idea whether they’re right or wrong. Give us the game back - don’t take it further away from us!

Mr Barry considered even having the facility close by but separated from the park would make holding some sporting events more difficult because of issues such as the need to manage traffic between the facility and the park. Canterbury Cricket chief executive Lee Germon said they were still working through a process with council on future plans for upgrading Hagley Oval to serve as an international venue ahead of New Zealand’s co-hosting of the Cricket World Cup. He hoped things would be progressed as soon as possible. Mr Germon said the Hagley Oval upgrade was a different type of proposal than what Sport Canterbury was suggesting. “The difference is that we’re looking to carry on the use of the ground that is used now whereas Sport Canterbury’s proposal is obviously a totally different, new use of the land.”

A DAY-TRIP to Wellington has helped 16 year seven and eight New Brighton Catholic School students take their minds off the earthquakes. The recent trip, which was funded by the New Zealand School Trustees Association and Lincoln Rotary, gave the students a muchneeded break, according to principal Deb Daines. “The students have been through a lot ever since the earthquakes so it was wonderful to have such an exciting day in a different city. “Four of the students hadn’t been on a plane before so it was a completely new experience Scary encounter: New Brighton Catholic School for them.” student Joseph Williams, 11, gets up close to The students visited Weta Workshops, Te Gollum at Weta Workshops. Ms Daines said one of the highlights for the students was seeing their local MP Lianne Dalziel speaking in the debating chamber. “Lianne has visited us at school so it was special for them to see what she actually does in parliament.” Learning how technology was used to create special effects at Weta Workshops was another interesting experience for the students. “It gave them a chance to see how the technology they are learning at school can be applied to real life, which was an eye-opening experience for a lot of them.”

The new timetables are available now from metroinfo.co.nz or by calling metroinfo 366 8855.

These were paintings on primed coffee sacks using fair trade foods as paint.” Student Katherine Champian said she knew about slavery but learning more about fair trade and how the products they purchased could help end slavery was very interesting. Heaton Intermediate was the first Canterbury School to become Fair Trade certified in 2010.

Principal Andrea Knight said it was important for students to know about how their purchases affected people overseas. “I think it really helps if our students have an understanding of global needs and the needs of different young people in different parts of the world. It really helps them to appreciate how advantaged they are living in New Zealand and it provides them with an opportunity to make a difference to the lives of other children,” Mrs Knight said. As a Fair Trade school, they attempted to use fair trade products wherever possible, she said. Students learnt about fair trade in their usual classes, but the Fair Trade Fortnight art project was a good way to reinforce the message.

Heaton Intermediate students utilised their creative talent to celebrate Fair Trade Fortnight this year. Inspired by historical British slavery abolitionist and potter Josiah Wedgewood, about 120 year 8 students created their own fair trade sugar bowls. Mr Wedgewood produced a series of ceramic pieces to advertise the ‘slave free’ cause. The students made their own bowls out of clay and used fair trade materials such as coffee beans, rice, cloves and Indian rubber stamps to create patterns in the bowls. Art teacher Fiona Taylor said the school did something artistic for Fair Trade Fortnight each year. “Two years ago we held a big exhibition

TAFS students make final plea A small contingent of theatre and film studies students marched through Canterbury University on the final day for student submissions against proposed cuts to the department. The 14 students presented acting deputy

Lucky Shopper at

vice-chancellor Jarg Pettinga with a petition opposing the university’s plans to cut theatre and film studies, American studies and cultural studies. They collected 2703 signatures. First year TAFS student Morgan Hodgson said the May 18 deadline for student submissions was ridiculous as they never officially received any information about the cuts. All the information students obtained was leaked by department staff, she said. Miss Hodgson also questioned why vice-

chancellor Rod Carr and pro-vice-chancellor Ed Adelson were both away on the day submissions closed. However, representatives of the group had accepted an invitation to meet Mr Carr on Monday. Whether their efforts to save the departments would be successful was yet to be seen. RUGBY-MAD students from Room 23 at Cotswold Primary School can say they have learnt their skills from two of the best rugby players in Canterbury after Crusaders Zac Guildford and Sean Maitland paid them a visit last week. Guildford showed the students how to hold a ball correctly, pass to another player and took them through a few running drills. Maitland showed the students how to kick

a rugby ball and kick a grubber kick. After the lesson, the students were able to ask the duo about life as a Crusader. Regan Sheahan, 10, said he had “heaps of fun”. “We got to meet the Crusaders in real life – not just watch them on TV,” he said. Keegan McGregor, 10, said he was excited to meet his rugby idols. “This is one of the best days I have ever had at school,” he said.

NASA interest in UC industrial coating research The creation of an industrial process to apply protective ceramic coating to metal machine parts by Canterbury University researchers has already caught the attention of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa).

Researchers at the Advanced Energy and Materials Systems Lab have tested the technology by applying a ceramic coating to a complex-shaped metal part. The breakthrough has been about 12 years in the making.

University professor hopes to bring Korea and NZ together Tania Butterfield Canterbury University’s Gateway Antarctica director Bryan Storey is in Korea starting to solidify a working relationship with Korean researchers in Antarctica. Mr Storey was appointed focal point coordinator for Antarctic Research Joint with Korea last week. The trip was planned prior to his appointment, but Mr Storey said he intended meeting with his Korean equivalent while there. He will lead a three-year project, funded by the New Zealand Government, which will focus on creating bonds between New Zealand and Korea so they can share research resources and expertise in Antarctica. Mr Storey has been involved in Antarctic studies since 1974 when he got his degree in geology from Trinity College in Dublin. His first job was with the British Antarctic Survey where he worked as a geologist and programme leader for 24 years. “I was interested in the appeal of working in a place like Antarctica. The extreme nature of the environment, the isolation and the fact that not many people had worked there. “[My first time there] was a totally amazing experience. We sailed by ship for six weeks. It was a completely different experience than it is now,” he said. Mr Storey became director of Gateway Antarctica in 2000. He applied for the focal point coordinator position because of the potential research opportunities it would provide New Zealand, although he admits he does not speak Korean and has not worked with them beyond attending the same conferences. A collaborative partnership with Korea could mean New Zealand researchers would be able to use the $90 million Jang Bogo Antarctic Research Station, which is being built in Terra Nova Bay, and a $1 billion ice-breaker ship, Mr Storey said. The Korean team was already working with United States and Australian researchers but had decided to use Lyttelton Port as a stop-off point for their ships. New Zealand already had collaborations with the United States, Italy, China, Germany

Mechanical engineering associate professor Susan Krumdieck invented the enabling technology, pulsed-pressure metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (PP-MOCVD) during her PhD thesis research in 1999. She spent the past 12 years undertaking scientific research and “thinking outside the box” to design coating machines for industry using the PP-MOCVD process. Canterbury University mechanical engineering PhD student Darryl Lee has since designed and built the first industrial-scale coating machine. Six staff members, three post-doctoral researchers, four PhD, six masters and more than 20 undergraduate students were involved with the project. The team also collaborated with researchers in the USA, Germany, Australia and Taiwan.

Ms Krumdieck said the technology could potentially be used in the dairy, medical, mining and industrial manufacturing industries. NASA and Teledyne had already contacted Ms Krumdieck to express their interest in the product, she said. “This is something industry has always dreamed about. Metal is of course the ideal material to make machines out of, but then the surface is susceptible to corrosion and wear. It’s like the holy grail of modern industry.”

and Australia and building a relationship with Korea would be about furthering research into climate change, Mr Storey said. “A lot of research will be ship-based to start off with, working on the change we’re seeing in the Southern Ocean and the impact of those changes on the marine eco-system. “New Zealand has been working on these issues using some of the NIWA vessels but it’s a huge place. It’s a very big area to cover, so the more resources we have the better to address the issue of climate change,” he said. They also intend furthering their land-based research around the new Korean research station, he said. The first step to cementing the relationship was to hold discussions with the Korean team to find some common ground, Mr Storey said. Korea has increased its Antarctic expenditure from US$10 million to US$60 million over the past five years.
