Hagley Park:
The people speak
MOST people who posted comments on the Facebook Rise-up Christchurch site regarding possible major development of Hagley Park for sports facilities and stadia were opposed. Here is a sampling of the comments.Robert Fleming: Happy to be the first to lie down in front of the first bulldozer on site. Don’t like the idea of the cricket proposal either unless very temporary. Old bus depot sounds ideal site to me Deklan Martin: One of the few things we have left of our beautiful city is Hagley Park; please don’t ruin it with sporting facilities. Toni Stewart: Hagley Park has been a sanctuary during these trying times, we have a responsibility to leave it for future generations as is. I have remained a passive abiding citizen throughout the earthquakes but I will stand up in any shape or form to stop development of a sports hub at Hagley! Colin Hefferman: Absolutely and emphatically no to a sports stadium/complex in a well-established central city park, the third biggest in the world after Central in New York and Hyde in London. Don’t do it! Hagley Park is an icon and should remain in its glory. Yes to a facility but not there! Karena Tumaru: Hagley Park - LEAVE IT ALONE! Jodie McCann: I’m a Christchurch girl, went to Hagley High. The thing I love about Chch is it is the Garden City. To put big buildings up in the park would be wrong. I’m sure it has so many memories for a lot of people, with all the places and buildings gone at least let us have our Hagley Park the way it is. Andrew Nuttall: This is an opportunity to have one of the best test cricket grounds in the world, don’t let this opportunity go by. Barbara McLachlan: Leave Hagley Park alone. Don’t need International cricket there

either. Think of the parking. Should I say lack of. Hospital staff, patients and soon to be police in the area, where will they park if there is an international cricket game going on? Sort out your priorities council, people’s homes are more important. Diane Nordstrom: No to a sports stadium in Hagley Park. Leave it alone. Cheryl Peacock: There isn’t enough parking in and around Hagley Park now without adding a sports stadium there too! And there is lots of vacant land already... USE IT! Kristine Kerr: No development in Hagley Park other than to upgrade any existing facilities. Trudy Smallridge: Leave it – use the stadium they just built. Sort the housing crisis before they start spending unnecessarily on other facilities. Gary Stead: No stadia should ever be built in Hagley Park. Upgrading the existing oval into a test match standard cricket ground is a great idea and I believe could be done without aesthetically changing the look of the park. Note I do not class a cricket pavilion, temporary stand when needed + grass embankment as stadia. Helen Gooch: Always someone ready to ruin something spectacular in the city. Leave for the generations of the future. SimonRix:Christchurchisfortunatetohavemany parks, but Hagley Park is one of the most important. Placed close to the heart of the city, available for the schools and clubs to play rugby, soccer, hockey, netball and so on. It’s also a nice place to just go for a walk! Having lived in the UK (yes, I’m a pom, but New Zealand is where my home and heart are), very few cities can boast any kind of open space for the public, let alone one as beautiful as Hagley Park. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for good! Why not build a complex somewhere along SH1? Maybe between Hornby and Templeton?

New website helping car sleepers Gina McKenzie
Giving hope: Car Sleepers website coordinator Shannon says she wants to help those people who are “falling through the cracks”.
A NEW website called Car Sleepers has been set up by two concerned Christchurch residents to help “hundreds” of people displaced by the earthquakes who are living in their cars. Car Sleepers founder Tony Rider said after discussing the issue of earthquake-related homelessness with his friend Shannon (who didn’t want her surname used) the pair decided to create a website to link those sleeping in their cars with people willing to help them. Mr Rider said the website, which was set up earlier this month, had received 300 hits so far, had received positive feedback from the community. “I was really shocked to hear about people living in their cars especially with the weather getting colder so I wanted to do something to help connect people. “It’s hard to believe that this is actually happening here in Christchurch.” Mr Rider, who operates an online motorcycle magazine, used his own funds to set up the website which provided a variety of options for people living in their cars from a hot meal to a safe place to park up for the night. “They are really just suggestions for people to take up like having a hot

THEY’VE shared a name, a school, a high school, a job and now Tom Alexander and Tom Barker have both been picked for the Elite MotorSport Academy. Alexander, 18, and Barker, 17, will join seven other young drivers from around the country to take part in the Dunedin event from July 2–8. The academy is intended to prepare top race and rally talent for domestic and international championship competition. The two Formula Ford drivers have led remarkably parallel lives since a young age. As children they both attended Cotswold School, with Alexander being a year above Barker, before going on to attend St Thomas’ College and work together at Canterbury Motor Racing School. Barker said that because of their similarities they had developed a fiercely competitive rivalry on the track but they were pretty good mates and it was “really cool” that they had both made the academy. With both of them racing Formula Ford this season, he was looking forward to continuing their competition. “Hopefully we’ll be going at it neck and neck for while,” he said. Alexander agreed.
dinner, a place to check their emails and a safe place to park for the night. “It’s just a broad overview and I hope people will share ideas and try and come up with a way to help get people out of danger because this is a huge issue.” Car Sleepers website coordinator Shannon, who described herself as a student, mum and activist, said she wanted to help the hundreds of people who were living in cars and “falling through the cracks” in Christchurch. “I know many homeless people in the city through work I have done over the years and the problem just keeps getting worse. “What really worries me is the issue of social housing. “There are lots of houses with just minimal damage that could easily be fixed up by the Government.” Shannon said she hoped the car sleepers website would evolve and grow to help those in need. “The website is a really organic idea that will change and respond according to the people who use it. “Social services are trying to help but they are stretched to the limits so we hope people who are able to help will get behind this idea.” The website address is www. carsleepers.co.nz

Chris Tobin From the editor Facebooking and tweeting
Letters to the editor
editor@mainlandpress.co.nz
Thanks to the technological savvy of a young whippersnapper reporter here I delved into the mysteries of Facebook and Twitter last week. I’m still not sure when you go on Twitter whether you are tweeting or twittering but I’ll move on. I have to say I’m well past the age of wishing to share my innermost thoughts on Sonny Bill’s haircut or girlfriend. And call me a luddite but I can’t quite get my head around how one person on Facebook can acquire an army of 450 ‘friends’; I find it somewhat uncomfortable too that people you don’t know ‘follow’ you on Twitter. We have upon us a generation who are growing up with all this technological wizardry which is now simply second nature to them: vast amounts of time is being spent tweeting/ twittering, facebooking and texting. The desire for personal privacy appears to
have eroded. There are, as we have found in recent days too, Facebook frauds. More than 20,000 people were taken in by a fake Facebook page supposedly belonging to All Black Richard Kahui. Among them were ill children at Starship Children’s Hospital. But it is not all bad. Social media can be a great help for people in our line of work and is now being trawled by reporters on the look-out for story leads. In our own case, thanks to Facebook, after posting questions on a couple of topics, we received an avalanche of replies. One of the questions posted related to the hugely sensitive topic of suicide. One person replied that he suffered problems coping with life but he drew strength from his family and the support he received from people on Facebook. I guess social media can be OK.

Housing crisis is ‘very real’ This is the first time I have ever written to an editor following an article (“Is there a housing crisis in Christchurch?”) in a newspaper. Hell yes, there is. I know of people living in broken homes, people paying rent because they cannot live in their own house due to damage and still having to pay a mortgage, two or three families sharing the one house and people living in cars. I know of one such person at work having to live this way as he cannot find accommodation. Rent increases going through the roof. I am 57 years old and ten years ago, the family and I moved from the North Island to Christchurch. We decided to rent for a few years until we could decide what area to build or buy in. Unfortunately, prices took off and we have been forced to rent until our bank balance gets back to where it is needed and there is enough saved to make up the difference. Two weeks ago, we received a letter from our landlord advising our rent was to increase by $50 a week. Similar stories too from people at work whose landlords are raising their rents by horrendous amounts. And Gerry Brownlee continues to mutter those words, “There is no housing crisis in Christchurch.” What a total idiot Brownlee is. He must get around wearing horse blinkers. Enough is enough. We are now making plans to migrate to Australia. It’s time to leave the disorganised bureaucrats to bungle their way through the current crisis in Christchurch. Warren Hancock, Papanui
Yes, there is a deepening housing crisis in Christchurch (Mainland Press, May 17) and we need an urgent government response. We’ve known it was coming for over 18 months, yet we’ve had little action from government and National MPs have been silent on the issue. The Government must intervene now, or we will all pay the price in the long run for the health and other negative social costs of doing nothing. It’s time for National to abandon their ideological faith in the market to solve everything, and start acting. Tony Milne, Riccarton Come on Mr Brownlee, take your head away from the smorgasbord at Bellamy’s. I may be soft in the head but I can see what’s going on. Rents are hitting the roof - $500 a week for a dump. People already renting are facing huge rent increases, house prices are rising, 200 more people today are looking for housing, which is added to the 5000 who have already left their homes. Thirty thousand are in the green zone and are going to need somewhere to stay short term and long term when their houses are being fixed. People are living in cars, garages and staying with anyone who will take them in. Douglas Shaw, Aranui Of course there is a housing crisis. You only need to read the papers and check out ‘To Lets’ to see this. Landlords are taking advantage and no-one is doing a thing about it. It is horrible and scary being in the middle needing a house. The Government needs to address this urgently. Belinda Wood, Papanui Letters continued next page

Central library to reopen in Rexel building
With reference to Dr Eric Crampton’s column in last week’s Mainland Press, I have lived in properties in Invercargill, Marlborough, Nelson and Auckland. Believe me, people in Christchurch don’t know how lucky they are. Comparatively speaking, rates are very low in Christchurch for the services provided, against other New Zealand centres. The city council is right to keep our assets that pay good dividends and they are right to increase the rates for rebuilds. The council should also have a local fuel tax to help pay infrastructure costs. It is easy for academics like Dr Crampton to say we don’t need a roofed stadium; he is not a typical hardworking Christchurch resident who looks forward to escaping to events at these places. We can’t all get solace from reading books or meditating.
The central city library is likely to reopen in the Rexel building in Lichfield Street. A Christchurch City Council spokeswoman said it was too early to comment on the exact details of the reopening, and councillors were yet to be briefed on moving the library to the Rexel premises. “It is likely to happen but nothing has been
finalised and councillors need to be briefed on this once decisions have been made,” she said. “Once more details and time frames have been finalised then the councillors can be briefed.” No date had been set for the reopening, the spokeswoman said.
St Saviour’s to return to Lyttelton From wood, to stone, to wood - from Lyttelton, to the city, back to Lyttelton! Full circle: Anglican Bishop of Christchurch Victoria Matthews and Cathedral Grammar School headmaster Paul Kennedy outside the historic St Saviour’s Chapel, which will be moved in October to the site of Lyttelton’s stone Holy Trinity Church, which was destroyed in the earthquakes. St Saviour’s was originally built in West Lyttelton in 1885 and is said to be the church where captain Robert Falcon Scott prayed before he left for Antarctica. It was relocated to Cathedral Grammar to serve as its chapel in 1976. It will be the third church to be on the Holy Trinity site - the first wooden church there, built in 1852, was taken down five years later as it swayed in high winds. After St Saviour’s is moved, Cathedral Grammar will build a new, larger chapel.

NZ Post In late April, New Zealand Post indicated that due to an irreversible decline in the mail business they were looking at, among other things, cutting the number of delivery days. I wonder if it has even occurred to New Zealand Post that one of the reasons their mail volumes may be declining is the reliability of their service. As an example, we recently sent an important package to a client in Hamilton, correctly addressed in a pre-paid envelope. It took a full week to be delivered. Given other similar experiences, we will no longer be using New Zealand Post for any mail that is in any way time sensitive. No wonder they have been seeing declining mail volumes.

Starting afresh: PGC building collapse survivor Kirstin Golding and husband Wade have overcome the red-zoning of their Brooklands dream home to start a new life with baby Lorna and their dog Coastguard in Fernside, North Canterbury.
New beginning for PGC survivor Gina McKenzie
PGC building collapse survivor Kirstin Golding and her husband Wade are starting afresh with their newborn daughter Lorna in Fernside, North Canterbury after their Brooklands dream home was red-zoned. The Goldings, who have been staying with Mr Golding’s parents in Parklands while awaiting insurance approval for their 10-acre block, said it had been extremely difficult to leave Brooklands. “Leaving was like finishing Christmas holidays early because it was where we had always wanted to live, but that’s over so we have to move on. “Life’s too short to spend time thinking about the ‘what ifs’,” said Mr Golding. The arrival of Lorna, named after a friend in her mid-20s from the Isle of Man who passed away from an undiagnosed liver condition two weeks after last February’s earthquake, had given the couple a boost. “It was amazing when she was born especially considering everything we’d been through since the earthquakes. “We were a bit worried at first because she
was only five pounds six ounces but now she is almost up to the weight of a normal newborn,” said Mrs Golding. With many red-zoned Brooklands residents relocating to North Canterbury the couple hoped to keep the close-knit community spirit alive. “Even though Brooklands itself will be gone, three quarters of Brooklands people are moving out here so we’ll be able to stay connected.” Mr Golding hoped to organise an annual reunion of Brooklands residents to commemorate the September 4 earthquake. “It would be great if we could all go back to Brooklands once a year and see everyone. “The people were what made it a great place to live so we want to keep the connections strong.” The Goldings hoped to start building their new Fernside home as soon as their insurance had been approved. “We’re out there most weekends planning how it will look. “Once we get the insurance sorted then the foundations will be down and we can really get on with our new life.”

No leadership, power struggles…and inertia making the decisions, who is the king maker. Absolute arrogance. Another weekend lost to feeling powerless Mr Gerry Brownlee that’s who. Then Cera’s overarching recovery lack of empathy, no sense of social cohesion, no strategy, still waiting for final sign-off from understanding of the real depth of emotion in this city. Underway again: Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari participants leave Sheffield to resume their journey.
Scooter trek fundraiser a ‘fantastic effort’ ChristinedeFelice
LAST Saturday’s Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari was “fantastic”, organiser Jayne Rattray says. “Two hundred and fifty riders had registered and quite a few tagged along for a leg as well.” The safari raised approximately $230,000 for the Cancer Society, which was $100,000 more than the amount raised in 2010. “It was a fantastic effort and we were really surprised as most of the riders were Cantabrians,” Mrs Rattray said. “We were absolutely rapt when it got to $100,000 and then it was going up by $7000 to $10,000 a day.”
The nine-hour journey from the Christchurch airport to Hokitika was completed on schedule, despite rain and poor visibility from Arthur’s Pass through to Jackson’s (hotel), Mrs Rattray said. There were quite a few breakdowns along the way and a couple of falls, but no serious injuries, she said. The riders spent the night in Hokitika, but didn’t get much sleep due to a storm that blew through the town. They returned to Christchurch by four-wheel rather than two-wheel transport on Sunday with their scooters in tow.
Bylaw proposed to control sex industry

Ph: 376 5350 for Bookings
THE Christchurch City Council has unanimously resolved to consult on a proposed bylaw that would restrict the location of brothels and control signage advertising commercial sexual services. The bylaw proposes restricting brothels, other than small owner-operator brothels, to specific commercial areas in Christchurch and Lyttelton. Signage provisions are largely consistent with the previous bylaw and would only be allowed in these specific areas and prohibited elsewhere. Small owner-operator brothels (SOOBs) as defined in the Prostitution Reform Act, would continue to be permitted across the city. This
is in line with the High Court’s ruling on the council’s Christchurch City Brothels (Location and Signage) Bylaw 2004. Mayor Bob Parker said the council had decided there was a need for a bylaw as many of the known brothels were located in the central city and their business premises were inaccessible or badly damaged following the 2011 earthquakes. Consultation with the community will run from June 11 to July 10. Details of the consultation process will be available from June 11 online at www.ccc.govt.nz/HaveYourSay/ Hearings, if necessary, will be held in July, with a final decision likely to be released by September.

Tom Taylor: ‘I want to keep the momentum going’ Mainland Press editor Chris Tobin recently caught up with rugby player Tom Taylor who has impressed with some solid outings for the Crusaders early in the season.
EVER since he can remember, Tom Taylor, 23, says he has wanted to play for Canterbury, the Crusaders and the All Blacks. Understandable, since the boy raised in 3 8 6 L i N c O L N R O a d Burnside had a dad (Warwick) who was a SNOWBOARD HIRE Canterbury stalwart and World Cup winning All Black. And he has an uncle (Murray) too SNOW CLOTHING HIRE who has worn the black jersey. Twelve months ago, Taylor was very much Mon - Fri 9.00am - 5.30pm • Sat-Sun 10.00am-4.00pm at the beginning of his journey; now, he has knocked off two of his objectives and he is aiming to achieve the third goal also. It is not coincidental that his rise as a player comes on the back of a surge in confidence. “Dad always said I deserve to be here (playing Super Rugby) but I struggled with that; I didn’t believe it,” Taylor said after a training session at Rugby Park which ended with him nonchalantly banging over place kicks from all angles. with traditional and old “Now, I’ve built my confidence and I’m favorite dishes really pushing myself out there. I feel comfortable out there,” he said. “I love the pressure; in the past I didn’t.” Taylor (he weighs 90kg and stands 1.83m) made his senior debut for Canterbury last year against North Otago in a Ranfurly Shield BRunCh match and joined the Crusaders Super Rugby Thursday and Friday from 11am line-up for this season. Weekends 10am to 3pm However, for the Crusaders’ first three DinneR matches, while the maestro Dan Carter worked Thursday to Saturday from 6pm his way back to full fitness, he sat on the bench Functions by arrangement for private, family or corporate and Tyler Bleyendaal was favoured. in Addington against the Cheetahs on March 24, Taylor was given his chance at first-five. He kicked two conversions and three penalties in the 28-21 win. In South Africa, against the Lions in Johannesburg, Carter was back at first-five and Taylor went to second-five. The match was won 23-13. Against the Bulls, also in South Africa, Carter remained in the pivot position while Taylor came off the bench to replace Ryan Crotty at second-five in a 30-32 loss. In the next match against the previously unbeaten Stormers at AMI Stadium, Taylor made a lot of people sit up and take note. He started at first-five and scored all of the Crusaders’ points in a 31-24 win - a try, which he converted, and eight penalties. Solid showings followed against the Hurricanes (won 42-14), the Waratahs (four conversions, won 37-33), and Taylor scored all the points against the Reds in Christchurch (five penalties, won 15-11). Losing to the Rebels was a real downer and Taylor was substituted in the second half, but he was successful with a conversion and four penalties. He was unavailable for Crusaders selection for the Blues game after a minor quadriceps strain. Carter went back at first-five and Crotty to second-five. Taylor is warming a bench more these days but is grateful for the chances he has been given this season and exudes the delight of a young player living his dream. He is excited to be where he is.

Quake book to inspire and motivate A “passion to help people” prompted Blenheim-based entrepreneur and life coach Karen Scott to write her book Rising from the Rubble, which was launched in Christchurch earlier this month. The book includes stories of people that have survived disaster and gone on to achieve success. “After the trauma of the earthquakes, not everyone was able to get up and get going. I wanted to inspire and motivate people to do that.” Proceeds from the sale of the book will go towards helping people and organisations affected by the earthquake, Ms Scott said. She had been running a business in Christchurch and was seriously injured in the February 22 earthquake when her office premises collapsed. She plans to move back to Christchurch when she finds new premises.

Officially opening on June 1, Cheapskates owners Bill Taylor and Mark Browne are excited about being back in business after losing their High Street shop in the February earthquake. And they are very grateful for the offer from Snowride owner Richard Naylor to share his premises.
“We are looking forward to welcoming back our customers. When they come in to Cheapskates and Snowride we can help out with any of their needs all in one place,” says Bill. On board at Cheapskates with Bill and Mark is manager Aaron Bolt. All three have been avid snowboarders for many years and are only too happy to share their expertise and the love of the sport with their customers. Snowride owner Richard Naylor caught
up with Bill and Mark after the February earthquake and realised that the crossover between the two businesses meant that sharing premises could work. “I could see that the two different customer bases – snowboarding and skiing – could work to both our advantages. The end result is a shop that provides a huge choice for all our customers whether it’s for gear, clothing or accessories,” says Richard. The handy central location near

ALTHOUGH their school trip to Japan was cancelled after the earthquakes 17-year-old Avonside Girls’ High students Grace King, left, and Lauren Scott still experienced Osaka this month thanks to Auckland Rotary. The cultural exchange trip to Osaka, organised by Auckland Downtown and Osaka Dojima Rotary clubs, was offered to the school for the first time this year due to the earthquakes. Grace described the two weeks they spent in Osaka with host families as “beautiful and overwhelming” while Lauren loved visiting Kyoto and soaking up the culture. Both girls plan to continue studying Japanese at university level and intend to return to Japan to explore the rest of the country.
Hagley Park makes both Cheapskates and Snowride easily accessible for those people needing repairs, servicing or picking up gear for hire. Cheapskates is well set up for the winter season with all the latest snowboarding equipment and clothing. The shop has the sole dealership for Nike Snow Programme and stocks a huge range of popular brands including Burton, DC, Libtech, K2 and Vans. Once winter is underway, they will start building up their new stock for summer of skates, shoes, inline skates and clothing. Over the years, Cheapskates has sponsored a lot of young riders and events in Canterbury, and Mark, Bill and Aaron are really looking forward to being back in business – and to the promise of a great winter with plenty of snow. Cheapskates and Snowride are open seven days near Hagley Park at 368 Lincoln Road or you can visit www.snowride.co.nz and www. cheapskatesnow.co.nz to view their range and services.

A DEAF St Martin’s resident is appealing for donations after discovering her hearing dog will require a costly operation to cure a severe ear infection and save its own hearing. Karla Smith relies on her jack russell, Sammy, her companion of seven years, to alert her to various important sounds such as a knock on the door, or fire alarm going off. Five years ago, Sammy developed an ear infection and despite ongoing medication and treatment at a cost of up to $2500 a year, the condition has worsened to the extent it now requires an operation to be performed by a specialist vet. This will cost $4000, a price which Ms Smith would struggle to cover. One anonymous donor has already donated $500, leaving a further $3500 to be found. Ms Smith said the operation would make a big difference not only to her but also to Sammy, who was in constant pain and discomfort, which caused her to walk with her head tilted to one side. “Sammy has been a great hearing dog, helping with my everyday living, making it easier. Her ears are the sounds I do not have.” Christchurch speaker for the charitable trust Hearing Dogs, Margaret Richardson, said the role dogs like Sammy played for the hearing
impaired was crucial. “It’s like having a right hand and if you take their dog away from them they’re lost because it gives them so much confidence.” Anyone wishing to make a donation towards Sammy’s operation can donate directly to At the Vets veterinary clinic at 406 Brougham St using the name ‘Sammy Smith’, or via online banking to At the Vets’ Westpac account 03 0866 0414327 00, using the reference name ‘Sammy Smith’.
Call for bowel cancer screening BEAT Bowel Cancer Aotearoa is calling for the Government to take more action on screening in the lead-up to Bowel Cancer Awareness Week which starts on Monday. Deputy chairperson Alison Ellison said it could be 10 years before a national screening programme was established, during which time another 12,000 New Zealanders would die from the disease.

Man’s best friend: Sammy, hearing dog for deaf St Martin’s resident Karla Smith, now needs funding help for his surgery to save his hearing.
“Each year, bowel cancer kills more New Zealanders than prostate and breast cancers combined. Yet the Government will not commit to a national screening programme.” The implementation of the first bowel cancer screening pilot programme, which commenced in October 2011 in the Waitemata District Health Board region, was a start but was too little too late, she said.

Southern youth speak up on rebuild Samantha Early
A REPLACEMENT for QEII, jokingly dubbed QE3, was among the ideas put forward by a group of Christchurch young people keen to help the city’s rebuild. About 200 teenagers attended the We S p e a k 2012 conference held at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology last Friday. The event was organised by the

Otautahi Youth Council and White Elephant Trust, who say the earthquakes have left the city’s youth disheartened and the way to get them behind the rebuild is to empower them to make change. Guest speakers included Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and Green MP Gareth Hughes. At the end of the day, the conference attendees split off into tables to discuss different issues like youth justice, environment, the rebuild and education. A group from Cashmere High School came up with the idea of establishing a centre for students who dropped out of school and didn’t know what they wanted to do for a career. Middleton Grange student Charlotte Rudd, 17, said she wanted to see a brighter, more colourful Christchurch which kept people and attracted originality. “It needs to be treated with more respect, and to do that it cannot be grey.” The highlight of the day was a visit from Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority chief executive Roger Sutton, who was presented with the best five ideas the young people came up with. They included more accessible recycling and rubbish bins, having a cycle-friendly city, having Cera meet with head students from high schools to get youth input on decisions, a new QEII sports facility and small, regular events for youth. Mr Sutton told them he would take the ideas on board and they would need to keep involved, get organised with campaigns and get the media and wider community on board for their plans to succeed.

KEEN walkers and mountain bikers are being encouraged to help out with planting trees on the Port Hills. A public native tree planting is being held between 1pm and 3pm on Saturday at Marleys Hill. The event is being organised by Trees for Canterbury and the Christchurch City Council’s Port Hills ranger service. Organisers say it will be an opportunity for
people to help bring nature back to the city. Marleys Hill can be accessed by driving to the Sign of the Kiwi at the top of Dyers Pass Road, turning right onto the Summit Road and driving westwards until turning right onto Worsleys Rd (before the cattle stop) and parking at the road end at the top of the hill. From there it is a short walk to the planting site, which will be signposted.

Football fun helps school
Make some noise: Students at Discovery1 School in Halswell were captivated by science rapper Tom McFadden when he performed there on Monday. Mr McFadden, also known as The Rhymebosme, was in Christchurch as part of a nationwide tour for this year’s eighth New Zealand International Science Festival. His raps, which are designed to get children interested in science, feature lines such as ‘Hot tip, take the class because science is amazing, stop, ooh back it up now let me see your brains think’. Free buses to Addington to continue running FREE buses before and after rugby games at the new AMI stadium and Addington have proved so popular they will continue for the rest of the Crusaders’ home matches in the Super-15 rugby season. Environment Canterbury, the Christchurch City Council and the Stadium Trust have funded the free buses which are available to passengers who present their ticket to the game. A park and ride system is also in place, with buses leaving from shopping malls around the city and returning there after the game. Environment Canterbury passenger transport manager David Stenhouse said the service
proved to be popular, with patrons keen to get to the game without having to find a park near the stadium. “Families especially have appreciated the service and it is great to see so many of them out there enjoying the games. We have had plenty of positive feedback, which is why we have decided to offer the free buses for the rest of the season.’’ The service will also be available when the All Blacks take on Ireland on June 16. More information on the park and ride and free bus service can be found online at www. metroinfo.org.nz or by phoning 366 8855.

Christchurch Hospital’s beginnings
T
he decision to build a hospital in the new colony of Canterbury was made in England in 1849 and a medical officer was sent to Canterbury from Wellington the same year. One of Canterbury’s first four ships, the Charlotte Jane, carried hospital equipment and supplies on its journey from England to Lyttelton in 1850. In 1851, this equipment was installed into a rented house in Lyttelton to form the region’s first hospital. It had six beds. Two years later, the hospital moved to the Old Customs House building, where it remained for nine years. A site was set aside for a hospital in Christchurch despite ongoing resistance for such a building from the provincial government. This site was later deemed too small for a hospital and used instead for the Provincial Chambers in 1858. Superintendent (Mr WS Moorhouse) later recommended the establishment of a hospital and a bill was adopted, proposing the sale of reserves to raise the £1500 needed for a
hospital. The Governor-General rejected the bill, leaving the provincial government to seek contributions and fundraise (unsuccessfully). However, community support for a hospital grew, and in 1859 a memorandum for the erection of a hospital was laid before the superintendent. The current site in Hagley Park was designated for the build. Amidst protests of ‘Hands off Hagley Park’ the bill passed all three hearings; the site’s proximity to town was favoured over an alternate site at Kerr’s Sandhills (near Burwood). In 1861, plans for a hospital were drafted and tenders called for. J Ferguson was favoured for the construction contract for a cost of £1756. Construction began and a wooden ‘Tudor Gothic’ style hospital, typical of early Christchurch, began to take shape and form. On June 1, 1862, the hospital opened to the public. It had eight wards of varying size, 56 beds and nine staff, who went in as the builders were on their way out!

Centuries of Care Pathology in Canterbury
A
s early as 1870, it was identified that a pathologist should be part of the Christchurch Hospital staff, but it wasn’t until 1911 that the Board agreed to appoint a full-time bacteriologist and pathologist. Professor Champtaloup from Dunedin was consulted to reorganise the laboratory for the new department. It was his strong recommendation to hire a young Edinburgh graduate, Dr Arthur Bushby Pearson, as Christchurch hospital’s first pathologist. In July 1912, Dr Pearson set to work in a small room located on the first floor of the old Edwardian building on Riccarton Avenue. In Pathology’s first year, he performed some 2281 examinations. However, by 1925 the department had expanded significantly to cope with the more than 17,000 examinations performed in that year.
For over 30 years, Dr Pearson was a loyal employee of the hospital, not only staying up to date with his profession but often leading it. Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL), as it is known today, is the leading medical diagnostic reference laboratory in New Zealand, with laboratory links and collaborative partners throughout New Zealand and the world. Today the laboratory performs some 25,000 tests per day. Operating from modern, well-equipped facilities opposite Christchurch Hospital, CHL provides laboratory services to general practice surgeries throughout the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB), provides tertiary care laboratory services for CDHB’s hospitals and performs reference tests for all medical diagnostic laboratories within New Zealand.

Early medicine and pharmacology
I
n the early years of the Hospital pharmacology, alcohol was one of the important medical supplies being used both for patient and staff for any number of ailments. A daily issue of beer or spirits was routine and even children could get their brandy. The more serious cases received port wine, and if the patient was dying the prescription was often ‘port wine ad lib’. The cost of alcohol relative to other commodities is shown in hospital expenditure figures from 1867: Diets, etc ................................. £ 1000 Crockery, etc ........................... £ 100 Wines & spirits ....................... £ 250 Surgical materials ................... £ 100 Ale for nurses ......................... £ 30
Undertaker ................................£ 120 Fuel ............................................£ 150 Consultation fees . .....................£ 105 Drugs .........................................£ 150 During this time, diagnoses were determined by doctors using only their eyes, ears, fingers and a stethoscope. As late as 1895, discussions in the press mentioned that diphtheria, a respiratory infection, might be treated by using five drops of sulphuric acid or by blowing sulphur down the throat of those affected. The only public health procedure that has survived since these early days of medicine is vaccination and is the most likely reason that Canterbury has never experienced a major epidemic of smallpox.

Centuries of Care Changes to the patient journey
A
dvances in medical knowledge, improvements in medical equipment and technology and development of new medicines have all led to a significant improvement in the quality of pa ent care over the last 150 years. An opera on to remove a gall bladder in the late 1800s would have been very risky, with a large incision made and anaesthe c provided via a mask and a mixture of nitrous oxide, ether and chloroform. The introduc on of penicillin and an bio cs in the mid-1940s would have increased the success rate of the opera on although the incision would s ll have been significant. Today, gall bladder surgery is performed endoscopically and pa ents are able to go home the next day.
Today the Canterbury District Health Board takes a ‘whole of system’ approach to pa ent care. This means: • Understanding and responding to the needs of Cantabrians. • Using informa on to plan and drive service improvement. • Managing the short term in the context of the long term. • Focusing on improving produc vity by doing the right thing the right way at the right me. • Making decisions based on where services are best provided – what is best for the pa ent? What is best for the system? One thing that hasn’t changed in 150 years is the professionalism, passion and dedica on to pa ent care provided by the staff of Christchurch Hospital.

A must have
for the recipe shelf Recipes from the Gardens of Rural Women NZ
B
ack in the 1970s, no kitchen was complete without a preserving pan, a set of scales and a favourite wooden spoon. Over the years, I have managed to build up a collection of three preserving pans. I only ever use one, but keep the others just in case I may need to have more than one brew on the go at a time. About five years ago, my family cookbook, which I had written down all my favourite recipes since I was a child, went missing. What upset me the most is that it contained all the recipes I had from both grandmothers. I know I have put it away so safely that it can’t be in harm’s way … I so wish I could find it. When I came across this new book called A Good Harvest, produced by the NZ Rural Woman’s group, I was quite emotional as it contained many of the old-time favourite recipes I remembered as a child. It features the never fail jam, bottling, pickling and preserving recipes I had lost. With loads of green tomatoes still sitting
Rachel Vogan The Happy Gardener
in my glasshouse, I was thrilled to see the green tomato chutney recipe from Elaine Waterreus and the green tomato and ginger jam recipe from Alison Tynan. These are two very easy and tasty looking recipes to try this weekend. The NZ Rural Woman’s group needs to be commended and thanked for compiling their favourite recipes into one book and sharing them so openly in such an easy to understand way. It’s a total trip down memory lane. On flipping through the pages of the book, I was immediately reminded how simple the recipes are. With good old fashioned steps to guide you through each recipe, it’s simply just what I had been looking for. What also impressed me is the tip and tricks on how to grow the fruits and veges in each section. This is a must have for anyone who likes to enjoy the rewards and treats of a summer harvest later in the year and for budding gardeners and foodies! Available at bookstores throughout Canterbury.
Must have: A Good Harvest is chock-filled with goodness!

Award-winning violinist to perform in city RUSSIAN violinist Sergey Malov will display the talent that won him the 2011 Michael Hill International Violin Competition with a concert in Christchurch on June 16. The Chamber Music New Zealand Tour is a major part of the international competition prize and Malov said he was looking forward to touring the country. Malov will be joined by New Zealand pianist Michael Houstoun. The programme features a wide array of music including Schubert, Paganini and Bartók. Malov scored a hat-trick of awards last year by also winning the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg and scooping up the inaugural Julian Paul Anderson Award for best
chamber music player. Chamber Music New Zealand chief executive Euan Murdoch described the tour as a highlight of their programme. “Sergey is a soulful and vibrant musician of deep expression and we are very much looking forward to him performing throughout the country in June.” The performance will take place at Middleton Grange School’s Performing Arts Centre at 7.30pm as part of Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2012 Kaleidoscopes season. Tickets are available through Ticketek on 0800 TICKETEK (842 538) or at www.ticketek. co.nz. For more information, visit www.chambermusic.co.nz.

I guess you just call it the Blues Matt Sexton
Matt Sexton excited by South African challenge TomDoudney
FORMER Canterbury rugby stalwart Matt Sexton knows he has a big job ahead of him when he takes control of South Africa’s newest Super 15 rugby team next year, but he is looking forward to the challenge. Sexton has been named head coach of the Southern Kings, a Port Elizabeth-based outfit set to take the place of one of the country’s current Super 15 teams. He will also be coaching the local provincial side, Eastern Province, which is currently playing in the second division of the Currie Cup competition. The veteran of 128 games for Canterbury will be leaving his position as Canterbury Rugby Academy manager, while fellow Cantabrian Brad Moar will join him as a specialist skills coach. Despite being aligned with the most successful franchise in the history of Super Rugby, the Crusaders, Sexton said it would not be a simple matter of taking what worked here and applying it in Port Elizabeth. “The Kings will have their own brand of rugby and that will be based around the people
It is very difficult to take anything out of the Blues’ performance this season. They look to me like a team that don’t even want to be there. This is firstly very sad, but dig deeper and you’ll struggle to find out what really is wrong. Coach Pat Lam is copping it big time and I suppose you could feel the buck has to stop somewhere. Lam put his hand up to do the very best job he possibly can do. If you are a teacher and you look at your class, there are just some kids who never want to get it and some take a delight in making the teacher’s job impossible. In the case of the Blues I am convinced that for whatever reason, some players in the Blues squad just don’t want it to work. Like the classroom situation, it normally means the whole class’ attitude suffers and reflects badly on the overall performance of the entire class. Like a classroom, I bet there are players in the Blues’ set-up who give it everything they’ve got, training run after training run, that are there. It’s no good saying ‘we’re going to play like this team’ if it’s not quite suitable to the group of players that are there.” Sexton said he was excited by the opportunity but acknowledged it would be a “massive” effort to build a competitive team. “The comparison would be like taking a team in the second division of the ITM Cup and putting them into Super 15 Rugby the next year,” he said. “I don’t think the expectation is that we will be winning Super rugby in the first year but as long as improvement is seen and structures are put in place I think, long term, it has got a recipe for success.” The area had a world-class venue in Nelson Mandela Stadium and a large number of young players who would now get the opportunity to play for a local side, he said.
match after match, because they personally want themselves and their team to achieve, but the lowest denominator always brings the rest down with them. Don’t call the race card with me. We have produced probably some of our finest All Blacks out of a multicultural environment. Don’t give me the reason that it’s a lack of talent or lack of money. Rugby players in this country have never had it so good and in return they should perform in the most professional manner on and off the park. I heard a school of thought on the radio the other day from a man whose opinion I greatly value, former CEO of the NZRU, David Moffat, who believed the answer to the Blues’ problems is to sign rugby league player Benji Marshall to the Blues for next season!
Sorry David, what an outrageous suggestion and I’ll tell you why. The Blues franchise encompasses the largest region of rugby players in New Zealand. Consistently, the top school 1st XV in the country, year in year out, come from Blues’ franchise schools. The cup of talent overflows and therein lies a major factor. Who up there scouts, hunts, identifies the talent on offer? Whoever they are should be told to take a long, hard look at the job they’re doing because any other franchise in the world would love to tap into (and they’re doing just that) the depth and pool of young men available. History shows that to move forward, organisations have to look inwardly before they move outwardly to fix their problems.

‘Leave it alone!’ Chris Tobin
LEAVE it alone! That is the feedback Mainland Press has received to proposals to locate a metro sports hub in Hagley park. On the Facebook Rise Up Christchurch page a total of 349 people said they opposed sports stadia being built in Hagley Park; 34 said yes and 19 did not mind. (See page 2). In a submission to the Christchurch City Council’s draft annual plan, Sports Canterbury has proposed establishing a metro sports hub combining swimming pools and indoor courts and stated it needed to be in or near Hagley Park. Hearings on the annual plan submissions begin today and council sports and recreation manager John Filsell said advice to council would be that for any significant changes to Hagley Park, a consultation process would be necessary. “That gives the opportunity for the community to say their bit and for council to hear what the community is saying.” In addition to the sports hub proposal, Canterbury Cricket plans upgrading Hagley Oval to make it an international cricket venue with an embankment, floodlights and a new pavilion in time for the 2015 World Cup. Canterbury Cricket CEO Lee
Germon will address the city council at its draft annual plan hearings today. Tennis Canterbury has also considered Hagley Park as a possible base. Tennis Canterbury chief executive Neil Prior said there was a strong drive by tennis and two other sporting codes to co-locate and Hagley Park was being considered. Mr Prior said Hagley Park was not necessarily tennis’ preferred option but a debate had to be held regarding the park becoming

a major sports precinct. “It will come down to what the city’s appetite is for change to Hagley Park and whether that appetite is large or small.” Christchurch Civic Trust chairman Neil Roberts said the trust
was not just opposed to Canterbury Cricket upgrading Hagley Oval to meet international standards, but also they were against upgrading the playing surface at the oval. Work is expected to start later this year creating a new pitch block on the oval. “We will request council to withdraw money and the whole idea of upgrading the wicket. The upgrade was meant to be for the benefit of all Christchurch, not the benefit of international cricket.” Mr Roberts said if one group received approval for such work, another would be there looking with the possibility of land being appropriated. “It could create a precedent for others. The Civic Trust is a group concerned for the sustainability of the environment either built or natural. We’ll challenge anything that upsets that.” The pitch upgrade at the oval is allowed under the existing Hagley Park plan. Mr Roberts said building sports complexes on Hagley Park would be “like another piece of heritage being deconstructed”. Mr Filsell said a date was still to be set to hear Canterbury Cricket’s plans for Hagley Oval.

coming here was something I really wanted to do, especially when I saw the images of the earthquake damage. “Even though I had seen it on TV I was so shocked when we drove around the central city.” Fellow volunteer 21-year-old Allison Foster of Alberta, Canada, said she was happy to give up part of her summer holiday to assist with the rebuild. “My major is construction management so it’s great for me to be able to see what I am studying in action while helping others. “It was eye-opening to see what the city looks like because we don’t have earthquakes where I am from. “The people here are so lovely even though they have been through a lot.” Miriam Hyett, who is currently living in a houseboat at Kairaki Beach with her husband and five children, was delighted to be selected for one of the houses. “We’ve moved so many times and it’s hard living on a houseboat with seven of us all in a small space. “We’ve had problems with the toilet backing up and it’s not easy to cook so it will be really good to finally get our own place.” Habitat for Humanity Christchurch general manager Peter Taylor said it was difficult to select the two families but both were very deserving. “The other family has a baby on the way and is crammed into a small house with another family in Rangiora so they are delighted to have their own place.” Mr Taylor said that in keeping with Habitat for Humanity philosophy, both families will help finish off the houses. “The idea is that the families work on the construction too so they will be doing some painting and other jobs before they move in.”

Quake recovery projects approved KAIAPOI will receive a new library and museum building, while an upgraded town hall been approved for Rangiora by the Waimakariri District Council last week. The combined museum-library building was expected to cost $12 million, with the town hall costing $9.6m. This was an increase of $3.5m for the museum-library building and $2.1m for the town
hall compared to the original estimated costs in the council’s draft Ten Year Plan. Council staff said it was preferable to keep the original Kaiapoi Service Centre site for the new library and museum complex due to its central location. The Kaiapoi project will be tendered early next year, with the Rangiora project to follow later in the year.

Ready to record: Linwood Intermediate students get ready to record a new tune at the launch of a new mobile music studio which was held at the school last week.
Linwood students celebrate mobile studio launch YEAR seven and eight students throughout Christchurch will have the chance to record their own tunes, thanks to a new mobile music studio that was launched last Thursday. The project was set up by the Christchurch Methodist Mission, Play it Strange Trust and RDU radio station. The mobile recording studio will travel to schools around Christchurch to record students every Thursday
Some bus timetables are changing Christchurch needs an efficient and well patronised public transport network. Since the earthquake, we have analysed how best to provide this and have identified six routes where we need to change the frequency of the buses.

until the end of August. Play It Strange Christchurch coordinator Jeff Fulton said the mobile studio would encourage students to experience live recording, with each student receiving a CD of their performance. “It is the perfect way to give students an introduction to the world of live recording. “We can record acoustic guitar, a choir or ukulele orchestra, or even a four or five-piece rock band. “We will also have a hip-hop backing track so the students can have a go at rapping or singing over the top of a
set of beats.” Mr Fulton said the studio was an example of the innovative responses Cantabrians had made to the earthquakes. Christchurch Methodist Mission executive director Mary Richardson said it was very rewarding to be joining the skills of those in the local music industry with the talents of young musicians. “Our initiative is about giving children a sense of fun and some idea of the opportunities that are out there so they can think positively about the future and build resilience.”
Mairehau to host free korfball programme INTERMEDIATE and high school students can try a new sport during the school holidays with a free korfball programme being held at Mairehau High School from July 9 to 12. The programme is being provided by Westminster Sports and Korfball Canterbury. Korfball has been played in Christchurch since 1997 and is similar to netball and basketball, with players working together to shoot the ball through a ‘korf’ or basket on a high pole. Chief executive of Westminster Sports Eddie Cropley said the event was open to female and male youth aged 11 to 17. “Korfball is the world’s only truly mixed team sport, with boys and girls playing with and against each other on equal terms. “Our holiday programme will be an ideal introduction for children who haven’t played korfball before, as well as offering an opportunity to further develop skills for those who have. “The programme will feature a mix of skills sessions, learning new drills and games, with plenty of emphasis on the fun side of the sport.” New Zealand under 23 and Canterbury korfball player Mikey Graham will lead the holiday programme, assisted by team-mates from the Canterbury team. Students who develop a taste for korfball during the holidays will be able to join in regular competitive korfball tournaments run by Korfball Canterbury at junior or senior levels. The programme runs daily from 9.30am to
Talented coach: New Zealand korfballer Mikey Graham (no. 1) will share his korfball skills with Christchurch students during a free school holiday programme.

Mr Filsell said a date was still to be set to hear Canterbury Cricket’s plans for Hagley Oval.

saving. It was just the right amount.” She was inspired by groups at the university campus who gave away sausages and ice-cream to students after the February earthquake last year. “People were so generous and I benefitted from it then, so I wanted to share that with other people.” Volunteer Steve Nichols said people were initially suspicious and thought there must be a catch, but overall they were encouraging. The group would love to do something similar again, he said.
After months of saving for an overseas trip, a Christchurch student used her savings instead to feed cold Christchurch residents. Carolyn Irons spent months saving for a trip to study clarinet in Sydney. But when she found out that the trip was to be paid for, she decided to use her savings to “bless other people”. The Canterbury University music student organised volunteers to bake and give away more than 200 biscuits with cups of freshly brewed coffee at the Bishopdale Mall. She said she wanted to make people smile. “I worked out how much money I would need to buy everything for the stall before I knew where it was coming from. “The very next day I got a call saying I would receive funding for my trip, which left me with all the money I had been

BISHOPDALE Community Preschool is expected to move into its new premises at Breens Intermediate next month, but it comes at a price. Preschool manager Sarah Straver asked the Christchurch City Council recently to take immediate action to start strengthening the council-owned preschool building to the new building standards. The preschool was forced to shut down on March 26. They had secured new premises at Breens Intermediate with help from the Ministry of Education, but it meant the preschool could only take half the capacity it had in the past. “This means redundancies for our teachers and more bad news for our families,” she said. Prior to its closure, the preschool had a total roll of 93 children from 74 families with about another 30 children on the waiting list. “Parents were contacting the centre on a daily basis trying to find a space for their children which demonstrates significant demands for the services of the preschool,” Mrs Straver said. The preschool held an enrolment drive two weeks ago and received 81 enrolments. “We only have the capacity for half of these.” Mrs Straver presented the council with a petition containing 2090 signatures supporting the reopening of the preschool as soon as possible.
“This community cannot afford to wait another six months to discover its fate. We understand the enormity of the situation that the council is facing. However, we believe that early childhood education centres are pivotal to community recovery for young children and their families. “Over the past eight weeks I have had parents reporting to me that this is the last straw for them. Some parents are telling me they are considering quitting work because they can’t manage the extra costs, while others are reporting that they might have to put their studies on hold.” The preschool had invested more than $290,000 into the premises over the past seven years, including a new kitchen, bathroom, and upgrading the playground among other things, Mrs Straver said. The preschool was in a position to financially assist the council with the cost of strengthening the building if need be. They wanted the council to work with the preschool community to strengthen the building and get the preschool up and running again. Fendalton-Waimari city councillor Jamie Gough said the preschool was “absolutely a number-one priority” and council had agreed. Council community services manager Michael Aitken said staff were preparing a report for council.
