WEEKEND EDITION

CONGRATULATES RESTART THE HEART TRUST

FRIDAY OCTOBER 28 2011

ReStart the heart Businesses are about to return to the heart of the city, with new and old in the mix. Tomorrow, 28 shops will open their doors with an official opening ceremony at noon. From 12.30pm to 6pm, you can get your shopping fix in the central city. “You will feel like you are walking around a shopping lane,” says Restart The Heart Trust chairman John Suckling. Restart, supported by ASB, is a quirky, fun and interes ng shopping experience using relocatable containers. The containers are lined and insulated and set out as shops, some higher end than others but all smart and unique. Popular fashion stores will make up the shopping precinct Shipping containers had been chosen for the precinct for their strength and tenants were given a six-month lease to sign with landowners. However, if Christchurch people show their support to the businesses in the city, it is highly likely that those leases will be extended. Enjoy your shopping fix back in the city – move forward with life in Christchurch.

ReStart the heart Saturday October 29th

To celebrate the opening of Scorpio in the City, our temporary store in the Cashel Mall Container Precinct. We will be holding our biggest ever Annual Sale. It will include EQ damaged stock and other heavily reduced titles. Again we have a substantial number of books to give away.

To shop ...or not? Staff reporters

THERE are signs of encouragement for central city retailers, with more than 70 percent of respondents to a poll on the Rise Up Christchurch Facebook page saying they would return to shop in the central city. However, it could take time to entice large numbers of shoppers and about a 10th of respondents said they never wanted to go back into the central city. The poll, which asked “Part of Christchurch’s central city is reopening for shopping this weekend, will you be going in?” attracted 1174 votes. The largest number, 37.9 percent, or 445 respondents, said they would definitely be going back to shop in the city and couldn’t wait to get in. However nearly as many, 414 people (35.3 percent) said they would return to the city to shop eventually but were not ready to yet. About 16.4 percent of respondents, 193 people, said they would not return and they had always preferred shopping at malls anyway while 10.4 percent, or 122 people, said they never wanted to go back into the central city.

The mixed sentiments were reflected in comments made to Mainland Press reporters who went to malls around the city to gauge reaction from shoppers and find out if people would visit the city for the re-opening. Jeanette Forbes (City): “Yes, I’ll be definitely going in, though I’m not sure where the entrance will be. I live in Cranmer Square and I used to wander down there all the time. I’ve really missed it.” Katie Marshall (Riccarton): “Yes, probably not straight away but I’ll go back into the central city shopping area before Christmas.” Kathy Edwards (St Albans): “I’m going away for the weekend, but I’ll try and go next week for a look. I think it’s a great idea that they’re opening up the city – it’s about time.” Julia Milson (Merivale): “I didn’t realise the shops were opening this weekend. I’m getting married next weekend. My fiance and I have not been in to see anything. But I’m keen to see what they’re doing with the shops, so we might go in this weekend if we get some

spare time.” Abbey Clarke: “I’m working in Riccarton Mall so I won’t be going this weekend. But I will definitely go, especially with Cup Week coming up. It’s a great idea. It will be good to get some variety and some more places to shop.” Robyn Guthrey (Guthrey Centre): “Most of the containers next to Ballantynes are on our site, so yes, I’ll be going in there to have a look. I haven’t been in there yet, but my husband has. I think it’s wonderful for the city.” Therese Wilkie (Merivale): “I won’t be going. I’m spending the weekend in Akaroa otherwise I would be definitely be going. I want to have a look.” Leah Russell (Riccarton): “I probably won’t go in there for a while yet. I don’t really feel like going in there. I don’t know – it looks a bit depressing doesn’t it? It’s just big empty spaces, eh. Yeah, I don’t think I’ll be going back for a while. I went to a course in the city so I was always there.” Continued on page 2

Ursula Pelvin (Sydenham): “I’ll definitely go back in as soon as it reopens. I’ve always liked it and I’m sad to see most of it go but container shops will do for now.” Mike Franklin (Papanui): “I’m looking forward to going back in as soon as it reopens. My wife and daughter are both keen to get back into Ballantynes and I’ll just go and have a look and if we keep it going and we keep going in more it’ll

keep going. If we don’t use it this city will die so we might as well get in and make the most of it.” Marie Mason: “Currently I’m just staying between my niece and my sister in Christchurch because I have returned home from living in Auckland for 20 years and my last memory of Cashel Mall was simply wonderful. “It was Remembrance Day and it was a wonderful experience and I would go back. I will be getting back in there as soon as I can.” Michelle (Riccarton): “No, definitely not. Ballantynes has always been my favourite shop but I won’t go back there again. I don’t think the safety of the area has been guaranteed and I’m concerned about what would happen if there was another earthquake. “I wouldn’t feel safe there. Parking is also another issue and I prefer shopping at Riccarton, Northlands and Merivale malls now because the parking is much better.”

THE City Mall pop-up container precinct is being brightened up today with hundreds of colourful hanging baskets being used to decorate the area. A group of Mid Canterbury people, who wanted to do something for the city after the February 22 earthquake donated the baskets for the Colour Me Christchurch project. Volunteers spent two days planting out 1000 large and 2000 small baskets in the main car park in Ashburton, before they were transported to Christchurch. Suburban areas are getting some of the donated baskets. Donated wildflower seeds are also being planted on empty sites. “It’s the least that people in Mid Canterbury can do for our neighbours. We hope the flowers will spread a little cheer over the coming spring and summer months,” organiser Walter van der Kley said.

From quake ordeal to cup glory

NEW FROM

THE beaming smile on Seth Murray’s face as he helped bring the William Webb Ellis trophy on to Eden Park will be remembered by many who watched the All Blacks’ Rugby World Cup victory celebrations. That smile might also be familiar to residents of the eastern suburbs, where Seth and his family helped out at a distribution centre following the February earthquake. Seth’s mother Stephanie Murray said their home lies on the Greendale fault and was badly damaged in the September 4 earthquake - the doorhandle on Seth’s bedroom fell off, leaving him and one of his brothers temporarily trapped. Mrs Murray said after February 22 the whole family spent a week working at a resource centre at New Brighton, which was set up by the police and Grace Vineyard church. “Seth was on the vege stand.” She said it was really nice to help, having experienced the quakes themselves. Seth, 13, described walking out on to the Eden Park pitch with Sir Brian Lochore and the trophy as one of the best moments of his life. He had spent weeks training for the part of the ‘rookie’ in the opening ceremony teacher, but was made understudy to Ethan Bai after he had a “shocker” final training run in which he dropped the ball. Seth thought that was the end of his Rugby World Cup. “We came home and I thought that was the end of it and then we got the call up two weeks before the final and they said they would like me to do that part and I was stoked, it was crazy how happy I was.” He said representing his city was the biggest part.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 28 2011

From the editor

Chris Tobin editor@mainlandpress.co.nz

A small but significant step SATURDAY will be a significant day for a lot of people with retail returning to the central city in the ‘pop-up mall’ or as some have termed it, ‘Tin City.’ Twenty seven shops in some flashed up shipping containers will open for business in City Mall as part of ‘Restart The Heart.’ Last Friday the mall looked more like a building site or a railway container yard than a shopping area but many people will not be too concerned. They just want to get back into the central city, to shop certainly but also in part to regain some sort of personal ownership of their city and to show by their presence that they want the CBD – the heart of Christchurch - to come back. The challenges and obstacles ahead are huge for the central city.

The February 22 earthquake has driven away retailers, and businesses that will never return. Others like Ballantynes, the flagship retail store of the city, will stay and tourism orientated businesses are keen to return. Yet enormous uncertainty remains. Among the plethora of issues are building height restrictions, suitable parking and the quality of the land; property developers will have to be satisfied their money is worth reinvesting and if aftershocks continue above three magnitude any significant rebuild will be even further delayed as insurers sit and wait. At this stage Treasury believes the rebuild will not start until the second half of 2012.

There are also governance issues. The Christchurch City Council in its draft comments on the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority’s draft recovery strategy has concerns about the wide ranging powers of the authority and says the importance of the central city and the Central City Recovery Plan is not adequately reflected in Cera’s draft strategy. As stated the challenges are huge but Saturday’s retailing return is at least a sign of hope. It will provide a small transfusion of blood into a CBD that since February 22 has been all but dead.

A number of Christchurch high school students also made it to the finals – Logan Glasson, 16, of Burnside High School for his pest monitoring trap; Sam Mackwell, 17, of St Thomas of Canterbury for his emergency power generator; Nimesh Patel, 18, of Shirley Boys’ High School for his vineyard robot and Florian Kux, 18, of Burnside High School for his light follower. The award winners will be announced on Tuesday.

Opinion

Back to reality BRACING myself for post-match analysis, agonising repeats, the hysteria that has accompanied winning the Rugby World Cup, I banged into a friend smiling like Richie McCaw and shedding tears like Brad Thorne. “Not you too,” ‘I said. “What’s with you men and your emotions?” I remember when those types of smiles, tears and hugs were saved for a good night of sex, birth of babies or when someone close died. I was dead wrong; he was ecstatic and very emotional because his pay-out cheque from EQC had finally arrived after 13 months! He had lost his job in February (now retraining), his wife the sole earner, his family living with the olds. Yes, he enjoyed the rugby but it didn’t stop the anguish, the depression, the frustration dealing with layer after layer of bureaucracy, it was just a temporary distraction. Now I get the last six weeks. I’m from a rugby mad family, sat next to the great Ron Jarden for years at Athletic Park, was a ball boy until they discovered I was a girl. I stopped going to the rugby when I didn’t want to stand on the embankment at Lancaster Park, I’d much rather pay three times as much for a plastic seat and have to ballot for test matches.(And you thought changing Coronation Street’s timing would see me weaken – not ). A NEW 30 million litre fuel storage facility at Lyttelton Port will improve southern supply, proponents say. The three 10 million litre tanks, commissioned by Z Energy, were formally opened on Wednesday by the company’s board chairman Marko Bogoievski and Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee at a ceremony at the Port of Lyttelton on Wednesday. The new tanks hold exactly twice as much fuel as the previous group of smaller tanks which existed on the site until they were demolished around 20 years ago. Z Energy general manager of supply and distribution Rob Freeman said the new tanks could add a week or more of spare capacity to the port. Mr Bogoievski said the storage tanks would function as part of a network of facilities around the country to create redundancy and not have over-reliance on any single facility. “The alternatives are basically more ‘just in time’ type deliveries of finished product into the market which is fine in a normal course of events but gets really challenging when you have things like February and September [earthquakes] happening.” The company has also committed to spending at least

CAREERS New Zealand is set to change the way secondary students are prepared for training, employment and life beyond school. The Career Education benchmarks were launched at Hornby High School in Christchurch by Education Minister Anne Tolley, this week. The benchmarks, a New Zealand first, are a selfreview tool designed to help secondary schools, teachers, career development specialists, principals and ultimately parents and boards of trustees, develop effective practice and deliver high quality career education to their students. At the heart of the benchmarks is a description of the skills young people need to develop so they can successfully navigate their own career journey and life. Careers New Zealand chief executive Graeme Benny said the aim was to contribute to better outcomes for

$10 million on new fuel storage infrastructure in the South Island. Lyttelton Port of Christchurch chief executive Peter Davie said the new storage was really important from the port’s perspective. “It’s another investment in infrastructure that makes sure we’ll have the capacity for the future and so from our perspective, we want to see people continue to develop, to make sure that the Canterbury economy can continue to grow.

It’s the perfect place to have a func on, so book your Christmas gathering now on 359 2930. The restaurant se ng reminds you of an old Italian farm house with its red and white check table cloths, candles, Italian pictures on the wall and rus c–looking wood that surrounds the room. “We have a new menu and an excellent chef who is passionate about food,â€? says Mark. There is good selec on of pasta dishes and pizzas to choose from as well as salads and hearty steaks for a main. They even cater for those who are vegetarian or gluten free. A popular starter is the ‘Arancini Balls’ (mozzarella, surrounded by a rich mushroom riso o coated in a crusty herb breading, ash fried and drizzled with basil pesto). “The dish is cooked perfectly and just melts in your mouth,â€? says Mark.

The mains are generous and beau fully displayed on the plates. Another popular choice with customers is the Pistachio Fe cine (pan seared chicken, cooked in a white wine and cream sauce and tossed with pistachio nuts, spinach and feta pesto) and the File o, a 300gram Ribeye steak (cooked to your liking, served on fries or mash, with a seasonal side salad or grilled vegetables and crispy onion garnish, served with your choice of sauce). Customers tell Mark the Pistachio Fe uccine has plenty of succulent chicken pieces and the sauce is delicious. It is not too creamy or oily, just a delicate combina on that worked well, and the 300g Ribeye is perfectly cooked and superbly tender. The combined tastes of this dish matched its presenta on beau fully and the addi onal garlic bread for the table is a treat. If you have a sweet tooth, then there is nice selec on of deserts like the delicious Meringue Stack (a tall layer of meringue, with fresh strawberries, frangelico anglaise and chan lly cream) – a nice way to ďŹ nish o the evening. Bathroom Planning The bathroom is often the smallest space in a house and the most frequently used, therefore planning is the key to a successful bathroom.

as to what you like. I think the biggest fear is “what if I don’t like it when it’s done?” This often curbs the creativity and the decisions are made to keep the space simple. There is nothing wrong with that but a little bit of personal flair can make all the difference. Don’t be afraid to make decisions that are slightly different. That is what design is all about, as long as you can justify why, then go for it. Add the textured tile border in the shower with matching soap holder, or paint the ceiling blue and the timber floor white, or paint stripes horizontally around the walls, or carpet the floor and splash out on the spa bath. The choices are endless. One last thing to remember is to try all the fittings and fixtures before you buy them, get into the baths and lie down and make sure you fit into them, sit on the toilets, pretent to wash your hands in the basin, turn the taps or levers. Make sure you know what you are getting for your money. This is another way to feel positive about your choices. I didn’t tell you that there are 1001 things that can go terribly wrong in any job that you do, but by simply planning and making the correct selections that suit you there can also be 1001 things that go absolutely perfectly. Go and enjoy your new bathroom.

It is vital to plan what are the essential items required within the space as sometimes we cannot fit everything in and sacrifices or compromises have to be made. For example the length of a bath, the width of the shower and vanity, towel rail and heater space. Many homes have a separate toilet and bathroom, this generally creates a small narrow room housing only a toilet and sometimes a slim wash hand basin, and a tight fitting bathroom including a shower over the bath and a vanity. By opening up the space and combining the two, a separate shower is often able to be included. As with any form of design or decoration, there are always questions to be asked. What colour fittings and fixtures? What type of tap? The selection of shower fittings to use - a slide adjustable fitting or a fixed head? What type of bath? What materials are best used? Tile floor or vinyl? Inset basin or a formed unit? We could go on forever, and that is what it feels like when you decide to embark on renovating or building a new bathroom. When you go to bed dreaming about taps and shower heads you know that it’s time for a break. I hope to take away some of the “nightmares” about choosing items for your bathroom here. As with everything in life, it is hard to get impartial advice, especially in the home decorating arena, as most shops you visit want to sell you their product. I hope that by giving you the information before you visit the shops, you will have a few questions to ask them, as you will have drawn up some parameters that you will work from.

That is where we will start - at the beginning as we said with planning. Write down a list of everything that you want in the space. Write down a list of everything that you will have to do ie plumbing and electrical, carpentry, tiling, painting. Think of where you want to put heaters towel rails, light switches, toilet roll holders, leave nothing to chance. Decide on what type/style of bathroom you want. The Tui New Zealand Vegetable Garden by Sally Cameron Review: Rebecca Sandys Penguin Books RRP $50 I’m not much of a foodie or a garden enthusiast, but after reading this book I am now excited about having a veggie patch. The alphabetical order of this book certainly helps. Flicking past the pages of vegetables I don’t like (mostly in the Bs), and discovering that I could grow an eggplant in my own garden, made me want to know more. It’s not only herbs and vegetables that she covers in this book. There’s a garden diary at the back, so you know what to plant in what month, and an informative section on protecting your garden, which covers insects and pests, weeds and fungal diseases that could affect your veggie crop.

This book has done the impossible here and converted an absolute non-gardener into an eager green thumb. We have one copy of The Tui NZ Vegetable Garden to giveaway. To be in the draw, email: giveaways @mainlandpress.co.nz with Tui NZ Vegetable Garden in the subject line, Or write to Tui NZ Vegetable Garden Giveaway, PO Box 39176, Christchurch 8545 To be eligible make sure you include your name, address and contact phone number. Entries close 5pm, November 4th.

It appears the gardening bug has taken hold and more and more people are enjoying the pleasures of the rewards it brings. Remember you don’t need to be green-fingered to give gardening a whirl this season.

Over the weekend, whilst at a friend’s watching the Rugby World Cup final, I was excited to hear about all the different garden activities the other couples had been up to. Many had already started planting their veggie patches. One couple had even taken the time to weed and feed their lawn (which I must say looked a picture). While another had been out that day to pick up some bargain box hedging plants, with the aim of planting them on Labour Day. It wouldn’t surprise me if those

The 10 key jobs to do in the garden at the moment: 1. FEED: Now is the ideal time to feed your garden, apply fertiliser to garden beds, lawns, fruit trees, pots, hanging baskets and indoor plants. 2. PROTECT: Slugs and snails love all the new seasons’ soft leaves in the garden. Lay slug and snail pellets regularly to protect your plants from major damage. Quash is popular bait to use; it is not harmful to cats and dogs. 3. MOW: Lawns need a freshen up now as the grass has started to grow again. Sharpen blunt mower blades to ensure a good cut, spray for lawn weeds and apply lawn fertiliser.

All you need is some enthusiasm, a little time and a plan for what you want to create or achieve. It is well known that the benefits of gardening are numerous, being outdoors in the fresh air is refreshing, and participating in an activity that gets you moving and enjoying the results of your toil are to name but a few. Now is the time to get on top of a few key jobs to ensure your summer isn’t dominated by mounting garden chores. 8. TURN ME: Compost if its well rotted can be added to the garden now. If your heap isn’t ready turn it now to speed up the composting process. Store bought compost is a good alternative to making your own. 9. WEED: As soon as the weather gets warmer, weeds quickly appear. Be vigilant and remove them by hand or spray before they take over. 10. WATCH: Last, but by no means least, number 10 is the most important task of all. After an hour or two or even a day in the garden, remember to take time to enjoy what you what you have achieved. Grab a chair, put your feet up and fill a glass or two with something that includes tonic, ice and a slice and watch the world go by in your back yard. Listen to the birds, enjoy the warmth of the sun and relax!

4. PLANT: Spring is the ideal time to plant out new season trees, shrubs and climbers. Soak all trees and shrubs in water prior to planting; dig the soil over to create a friable position for the plant to anchor itself to and firm plants in well after planting.

6. SUPPORT: New season perennials and roses may require staking or tying now to prevent wind damage. Old pantyhose, or other soft fabrics, are ideal to use as ties.

I love getting out and about and chatting to people – I never tire of talking to people about plants, gardening and anything else for that matter.

5. SPRAY: Pests and diseases are beginning to re-appear. If you are not sure, what is causing damage on your plant take a piece into the garden centre and let them help you identify it. They will be able to provide you with the right remedy to fix the problem. Do not be fooled and think it will fix itself.

wee hedging plants have to wait until next week to enter the soil, as I have a feeling there may have been a case of ‘man flu’ in that household on Monday.

7. TRIM: Give anything you have not trimmed back since last season a good haircut. Hedges can be trimmed now to encourage fresh growth. Clippings can be added to the compost heap.

Gardening with Rachel Vogan

Get berried this summer A layer of straw around ripening Strawberries protects them from becoming dirty or damaged. When berries start fruiting, protect and cover with netting or tunnels to keep birds away. Apply strawberry food once a month to all berries and water your plants regularly throughout summer. Rachel Vogan Harvest once berries are The Happy Gardener ripe and serve at room temperature for maximum flavour.

When it comes to results versus effort berries are top of the class, only a small amount of effort is required to produce handfuls of fresh, delicious berries. Berries need to be planted in a sunny position, no sun = no flavour.

TOP TIP: Never try to wash and sort soft berries like raspberries or boysenberries with water. They quickly turn to mush. Simply brush off any debris with a soft cloth or pastry brush.

To get the best berries, start with the right ingredients - healthy strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry plants. Don’t be tempted to dig up old strawberry runners, these may grow but probably won’t produce a bumper crop because berries from older runners tend to have less vigour and flavour. You can plant berries in a pot, planter or in the garden. Wine barrels are a good choice (make sure you drink the wine first) for multi-berry plantings. Try planting a thornless Blackberry or Raspberry in the centre, then plant three blueberries around that and edge with strawberries or the crazy looking, sweettasting orangeberry for a berry combo that will be as tasty as it is delightful. Whether you are planting in the ground or in pots, plant your berries into Strawberry Mix, this has all the goodies that berries require to flourish.

WHICH KITCHEN BENCH TOP TO CHOOSE? What influences the decision on a kitchen bench-top’s material? Budget and look mostly. Prices range from natural stone at the top end to simple laminate at the bottom. Ask yourself: Will the product/material fit into the look of the scheme? Is it a critical factor in the style? For example- country kitchens suit a timber counter top. What is the timeframe required? Is it a short-term makeover where you can settle for a quick-fix tile counter-top to sell your home, or are you staying put and needing a quality finish? Is it a high-wear kitchen with lots of equipment moving on and off, with constant use, cutting etc? Does it require a product or material that is solid and durable, or one that can be repaired if damaged? Here are some of the products or materials available for use as kitchen bench-tops or counter-tops. LAMINATE Laminate is probably the most versatile as it comes in endless colours and styles. The designs are constantly being updated, and you can have a look of the more expensive products like marble, granite, stainless steel, terrazzo without the expense or maintenance. It is impervious and can be made to fit most spaces, is reasonably damage-proof and versatile, and can be shaped to allow a splash-back up to the wall. The front edge can be rolled, square, bull nose or clashed with timber. You can achieve multiple-looks with a little imagination. STAINLESS STEEL Stainless Steel is a wonderful impervious surface that can be formed with a sink all in one. Marvellous if you hate joins that catch dirt and food. It is stainresistant and can stand high temperatures but it does scratch, so direct cutting is not advised. It can also be formed to create an up-stand to the wall or splash-back behind hobs, creating a good flow of a single material, reducing joins and unsightly gaps. It has an industrial look and is used often in modern, functional, simple kitchens. Stainless steel appliances to match the bench-tops create a hightech look.

TIMBER Timber creates a unique look for your bench-top as timber has grain that creates a pattern. Generally timber tops are created by laminating strips of solid timber together to create a large piece and then sanding them back to create a smooth surface which can be oiled or lacquer finished, depending on the look you require. It is easier to repair when oiled and has natural antibacterial and odour-absorbing properties. Repair is by sanding and re coating with oil. The lacquer finish, whilst looking smart and glossy, can scratch and wear. Repair is more complex. The front edge can be shaped to whatever finish is required. GRANITE Granite is luxury, solid and stable, natural and unique. Granite provides a hard, durable surface. It is porous and does require sealing on a yearly basis but is chip, scratch and stain resistant; perfect for the kitchen. The best part is that the natural quarried stone-look is unique to you. You do have limited flexibility to the front edge details. The floor and cabinetry supporting the granite requires more strength than a standard kitchen unit. CONCRETE Concrete has made a comeback for the creative designer. Concrete is porous and requires sealing, then waxing to stop any stains penetrating the surface. It can be coloured or inlaid with glass, shells or stones to provide a unique look. Like granite, it is very heavy and will require the cabinetry and possibly the flooring to be reinforced. CERAMIC TILES Ceramic tiles are still a versatile option and a good way to makeover a tired kitchen. Not many rules here - simply ensure that you select a glazed tile so there is no staining, and ensure that you seal the grout for the same reasons. What have become popular are the small mosaic glass tiles as up-stands or splash-backs. Those are the most popular forms of kitchen bench-tops. Remember to view the material or product sample in a large piece - especially the laminate, as it will look different over a large area, and view them horizontally, as they will be when finished.

A steady growth in business meant more space was needed, and as a result the Corbe s moved into their spacious, new, purposebuilt premises across the road on December 1, 2008. The move saw a change of name to Jones Road Auto and a significant expansion in the services being offered. “We cover a wide spectrum of services from warrants and lubes through to tyre fi ng, wheel balancing, vehicle servicing and repairs and tune-ups,” says Keith. They have three fully qualified technicians and one appren ce on the team of seven, which includes Keith and Kris and their son Paul. The workshop has the latest diagnos c equipment enabling the technicians to accurately determine what work needs to be done on any vehicle. Customers are given an es mate before major work is undertaken and any parts required are sourced through a network of suppliers and tradesmen. As a member of a parts buying group, Jones Road Auto is able to supply new and used parts to customers at very compe ve prices. “We have a wide selec on of new and second-hand tyres at very compe ve prices and we will advise customers on what tyres should be fi ed on their vehicle and supply and fit them as required,” says Keith. There are two dedicated warrant lanes and any minor repairs, needed for the vehicle to pass the warrant, such as replacing wipers or bulbs, will be done quickly and efficiently in the workshop. For vehicle servicing and tune-ups, customers need to book their vehicle in, and courtesy vehicles are available. Jones Road Auto customers come from a wide catchment area, and with the establishment of Izone Industrial Park and the growth of Rolleston as a residen al area, Jones Road Auto will con nue to provide professional vehicle servicing and Warrants of Fitness for an expanding customer base. Listing Number: PI8701 5 bedrooms • 2 bathrooms • 2 car garage With some of the area’s best examples of early character homes, Hawkesbury Avenue has long been considered one of Merivale’s more desirable streets. Setting a very high bar indeed, this twostorey family home, with its classic, putty coloured weatherboard exterior gives no clue to the seemingly limitless amount of light-filled spaces inside. From its wide entry with beautifully crafted ornate plaster cornices running the length of the long central hallway, this house just continues to unfold a series of spacious rooms with their traditional high studs. The first of the three large living areas has a deep bay window, original fireplace, views to the beautifully landscaped and private front gardens and opens into the second family living area. This vast expanse of space, which opens through French Doors to the gardens, takes in the adjacent family dining area and large kitchen with a second, separate and more formal dining area across the hall. There are three larger than double bedrooms on this floor, two of which feature the original tile and iron fireplaces, with carved wood surrounds. These bedrooms are serviced by a family-sized bathroom with the original arched window over the bath. At the far end of the hallway is the third living area which opens to the hardwood deck and magnificent grounds, in which there is an in-ground pool. Upstairs there are a further two bedrooms, one of which is the main suite with a fitted walk-in-wardrobe and large ensuite, and a games room that runs almost half the length of the top floor. This outstanding property enjoys warmth and light all year round, courtesy of its positioning, a combination of heat pumps, a log fire and insulation. With its extraordinary capacity to offer family living on a grand

scale, its proximity to desirable schools and the popular retail, restaurant and café precincts of Fendalton and Merivale, this home manages to combine all the practical elements necessary for comfortable living in one very stylish and well-designed package. Understandably, the current owners will have to be prised out of this sublime home with a crowbar to take up their job transfer to another city. Astute buyers will be registering an early interest.

Finally it’s back home!

TWENTY-FOUR years really isn’t that long as you get older, but for rugby fans it seems like a life time. For younger people though it is a generation. The older you are, the more likely you are to forget that a lot of things we have experienced have not been experienced by the younger generation. It’s probably worthwhile remembering that the only thing you get when you look back is a sore neck! The nation went overboard when the final whistle went on Sunday night after the All Blacks beat France and won the World Cup. Many didn’t give a toss that it wasn’t a great All Black performance, in fact it was far from it. All that mattered to them was that the little gold cup that New Zealand invented way back in 1987 was back

where they thought it belonged for the rest of its life. What has been a lesson that all New Zealanders had to learn over the drought years was that if you want something bad enough you have to work really hard to achieve it. For many, the Webb Ellis Cup was ours by right and that was because we played the best rugby in the world most of the time. If you were totally honest you would be tempted to say that the team that came second in the final played the better rugby. With the most attacking back three in world rugby it really was quite ironic that the only All Black try was scored by a player with number 1 on his back. Even more ironic was that the vital penalty was slotted by the number four ranked first five-eight

in the country! What also amused me was the fact that we go to extraordinary lengths to select, prepare and rake over every selection the three wise men make to make sure we are the best prepared squad every time we take the field. In contrast, the All Blacks were very nearly undone yet again by a squad you could only describe as a rabble, disorganised, split apart more than Christchurch buildings and which had already sacked their coach, even before the start of the tournament. At the end of the day, congratulations to all involved with the 2011 campaign and we, as a nation, will bask in their glory but always remember that like the very ball involved in the game, the Rugby World Cup is a very oddshaped competition that can take an

Player numbers hold up for tennis Christine de Felice

INTERCLUB tennis is well underway across the city, with overall participant numbers down only about three to five percent over last season, despite the earthquakes. “ We are quite delighted with this,” CEO of Canterbury Tennis Dave Blackwell said. “We’re pretty close to 1000 inter-club teams competing this season, which is a huge logistical exercise.” A highlight of last weekend’s play was the achievement by the talented Meredith

brothers, Tim and Matt, who both reached 100 wins in top-grade tennis, and within about 15 minutes of each other. They play premier grade for the Cashmere Tennis Club.
