A SURVIVOR of old Sydenham is getting a makeover. The 160-year-old workers’ cottage at 3 Harold Street has become derelict over the years but has survived both the earthquakes and the re-zoning of Sydenham to business. The owner of neighbouring business Tropicool, Rod Stuart, purchased the building last year because he wanted to do it up. “My favourite programme on television is Grand Designs and I just love the way they take old stuff and they rebuild it and they keep the form.” Mr Stuart said it would be a contrast to the concrete and glass buildings surrounding it. At a meeting with Christchurch City Council planners last week, he was given the go-ahead to do repairs without the need for resource consent, even though it fell outside the area’s zoning. The green light was granted on the basis the cottage would be linked with Mr Stuart’s business, serving as manager’s accommodation. He will still require building consent for the work and was looking for advice from heritage groups as to the best way to go about the repairs, which he was already describing as a “labour of love”. Mr Stuart said the cottage had probably been brought from Australia as a kitset home and its durability was probably due to the Australian hardwood used in its construction. “The area used to be full of little workers’ cottages, it was a real working-class area,” he said. The original part of the cottage has two rooms, though it has been added on to over the years. “I think it’s kind of cool that this can be kept for future generations, preserved so it can last another 160 years.”

Time to look around ways to engage the community. This team is able to clearly articulate what it is doing, where and why, something the other arms of the council could learn from. There are festivals, shows, outdoor pursuits, all targeted for the diverse nature that makes up our communities. Most have free entry, therefore making it affordable and accessible for everyone. With a city in rebuild mode, the events unit has put together programmes that target what we all need outside of our banged-up homes and this will hopefully relieve the angst we feel about the intolerable wait. Event management is an area targeted by the local body reform as it points the council towards its core services. Many of the events have seed money attached and then a team of volunteers make it happen. These events get people out and about, get them talking laughing, thinking and usually feeling good about themselves and their city. When people meet in large groups, share and feel, it provides a healthy vibe and reconnection with a sense of time and place, with people and places. We have lost so much of our identity in bricks and mortar but if we can find some culture, some art, sing or dance, watch and learn then maybe we can start the healing, start to rebuild the trust that we need to have in each other. It will have to be small steps but a walk through the parks, a glimpse at quirky art, watching our children interact and our elderly laugh will start the process.

WHEN a city like ours has been battled and bruised it is easy to lose sight of the very good things that are happening around the place. We have the most amazing people volunteering through many sectors to bring some help or cheer to those who need it for whatever reason. These volunteers have, since September 4, 2010, worked tirelessly, without any of the glory-seeking, any commotion. Just honest-to-goodness help for our fellow man. Every day people in our community, your neighbours, work colleagues, family or friends have found ways to give back to the city. Back to its citizens in a way that makes a difference no matter how small. The work and the hours volunteers have freely given should not be underestimated. Consider the impact if we weren’t able to rely on human nature to help our fellow man as the daily grind continues. From the digging to the food deliveries we all stepped up. As the rest of the country continues to enjoy normality we run the risk of forgetting what a great place Canterbury is to live in. The initiative of groups like Gap Filler and Greening the Rubble, the Body Festival and the Court Theatre - all have their place in the choice of how we recreate. The Christchurch City Council has taken some major hits and the attention on its political bickering is well deserved, but one of the things the council does well is event management. As spring slowly slides into summer, the team will look at all sorts of

Antarctic season takes off Antarctica bound: The first flight of this year’s Antarctic season took off from Christchurch on Monday. This C-17 Globemaster had more than 100 United States and New Zealand workers on board. Many of them would be spending Christmas on the ice before returning home when the season ends around March. Lieutenant Colonel Brent Keenan said there was only one runway for the plane to land on so a careful eye was kept on the weather. Timeline for school decision revealed SCHOOLS which are marked to be closed or merged under the government’s postearthquake education plans for greater Christchurch received letters on Friday, the last day of school term three, giving them 10 weeks to consult with their local communities and report back on the proposals. The Ministry of Education’s deputy secretary for education, regional operations, Katrina Casey, said the chairs of the boards of the 38 schools received letters outlining the next steps in the process and the timeframe. “This is an important part of an ongoing process that’s already seen the greater Christchurch community involved in developing a plan for education renewal following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. “While formal consultation begins for this particular group, we are continuing to work with each of the learning community clusters to shape the nature of education provision within each of those clusters of schools.”

Ms Casey said they were also continuing to progress planning for the required repairs of about 40 schools not directly impacted by closure or merger proposals. “We appreciate this is a difficult time for some schools and communities as they work through the proposals and I assure them every submission will be carefully analysed and assessed.” She said the ministry was offering independent facilitators to support school boards as they undertook consultation and to assist them to write their feedback or submission to the proposal. “Feedback is due to the ministry on proposed mergers and closures on December 7. The deadline for feedback from the two schools who have voluntarily sought closure is October 26. The Ministry of Education would then report back on all the feedback received and provide advice to Education Minister Hekia Parata by Friday, February 8, who would consider it before making decisions on the next step by

Monday, February 18. “If a board agrees with the decision on a merger or closure, a final decision is expected at that time. Where there is disagreement, a board will have until March 22 to provide any

further reasons why their school should stay open or should not merge,” Ms Casey said. The final formal announcements of all closures and mergers are due to be made on April 5, 2013.

A UNIVERSITY of Canterbury academic believes Christchurch motorists can expect increased traffic congestion if plans to close a number of schools go ahead. The University’s GeoHealth Laboratory codirector Professor Simon Kingham said bigger schools would mean more cars at the school gate, which would lead to greater congestion. “We know that increased distance and more traffic are two significant disincentives to people wanting to cycle or walk. This means the proposals will almost certainly have negative impacts on uptake of people wanting to bike to school. “This is at a time when other plans for the renewal of Christchurch include a desire for

more walking and cycling in a rebuilt city. In addition, there are also likely to be negative impacts on the wellbeing of local communities as a result of school closures and mergers.” However, Professor Kingham said there were possible solutions preventing traffic congestion. “It is essential decisions about travel behaviour are factored into the decisionmaking process, to understand the transport implications of closing and merging schools.” He said separation from traffic was the key to encouraging people to cycle. “We have a unique opportunity to make any changes in infrastructure complement any changes in schooling to achieve a better transport outcome,” he said.

POLICE in Christchurch are targeting alcoholrelated crime in the lead-up to the festive season. Tactical coordinator for Christchurch Central Police Senior Sergeant Glenn Nalder said for the next three months police would be increasing their existing focus on alcoholrelated offending and victimisation. Nationally, about one third of all police apprehensions involve alcohol and half of serious violent crimes are alcohol related and Canterbury crime figures show similar trends. “It would be pretty rare for any given Thursday or Friday or Saturday night for a constable to attend a job where alcohol is not involved in some way,” Senior Sergeant Nalder said. He said alcohol was a significant contributor to assaults, family violence and car crashes. One of the focus areas in this campaign was enforcing liquor bans, both in the new nighttime hotspots like Papanui and Merivale and in the central city. “There are increasing numbers of bars

Police were also focusing on places which sold alcohol. “It’s a good time to make sure your staff members are aware of their obligations under the Sale of Liquor Act and refresh any training they may have. “We want people to look after each other. Look after your friends and family.”

CRIME in the Canterbury Police District continued its post-earthquake downward trend in the year to June 30, with a recorded 11.7 per cent drop. The total recorded crime in the Christchurch Central Area was down 26.9 per cent, reflecting the fact that the central city has been largely unpopulated for most of the year. A total of 40,522 offences were recorded in Canterbury for the 12-month period, compared to 45,904 in the same period the previous year. The latest results show a similar trend to those reported for the 12 months to June 30 2011, which showed a decrease in reported crime of 14.6 per cent. Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Gary Knowles said the latest statistics continued to reflect the impact of the Canterbury earthquakes. “We saw crime statistics take a sharp dip in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes, and it’s good news that we are seeing that trend continuing in these figures,” he said. “Although we anticipate that crime levels will not remain this low long-term, it’s encouraging to see that the figures have remained well below pre-quake levels across almost all crime types.”

The current reduction also maintains the long-term trend, which has seen crime in Canterbury falling from a high of 1155 offences per 10,000 people in 1995-96, to 733.5 in the latest fiscal year. Substantial reductions were recorded in some of the high-volume crime categories including burglary-related offences - down by 21.9 per cent; theft and related offences down by 14.3 per cent; and property damage - down by 10.5 per cent. Increases were recorded in illicit drug offences, which increased by 2.7 per cent, from 1841 to 1890, and in fraud-related offences, which increased 5.4 per cent, from 1074 to 1132. Ten murders were recorded in Canterbury District for the 2011-12 year compared to three in 2010-11, and five in 2009-10. Superintendent Knowles says while results are positive, the district was far from complacent about the reduction and remained focused on preventing and reducing crime.

THE Go Red for Women breakfast held in Christchurch last Thursday was one of a series of four being run by the foundation this year as a fundraiser for research into women’s heart disease. The others were in Wellington, Tauranga and Auckland. Guest speaker Dame Jenny Shipley, patron of Go Red for Women, survived a heart attack at the age of 48, and is passionate about encouraging women to take control of their heart health, regional heart health manager Anne Trappitt said. “Most women don’t know that heart disease is the biggest killer of women – they think it is breast cancer, but an average of 48 Kiwi women die every week from heart disease, that’s almost four times as many as those who die from breast cancer,” Mrs Trappitt said. “And that means 2500 families being impacted every year.” She said because women tended to take care of others before themselves they could overlook the importance of taking care of their heart health. “The key message from the foundation is for women to ‘know their numbers’.” Women needed to find out their blood pressure and cholesterol ratio from their GP or practice nurse, then visit the Know Your Numbers website – www.knowyournumbers. co.nz – to find out their heart age and their risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years. If their heart age is higher than their actual age with an increased risk of disease, they are encouraged to take steps to improve their heart health by following a suggested plan. “The single most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease is to quit

WHY doesn’t New Zealand have more voluntary stream monitoring programmes? That’s one of the questions Annabelle Coates is asking as she studies voluntary stream monitoring in New Zealand as compared to other countries. The problem isn’t that streams and rivers aren’t monitored: Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury take regular, indepth readings. Rather, the lack of volunteer programs disconnects people from this area of the environment. “The community, by being involved, is learning a lot,” Ms Coates said. “The data isn’t necessarily the most important part.” Ms Coates is studying toward a master’s of environmental science at the University of Canterbury (UC) Waterway Centre for Freshwater Management, a joint venture between UC and Lincoln University. She has worked with three monitoring stations – in Nelson, Auckland and Christchurch – which she thinks represent the majority of stream monitoring volunteer programmes in the country. Participating in monitoring fresh waterways could inspire people to care for the environment in other ways, Ms Coates said, adding that many water testing volunteers were children. Stream monitoring programmes often involve basic techniques. Testing a stream’s pH and conductivity and visually assessing the area may take only 20 minutes per site per month. Trust monitors the Styx River, which Ms Coates said was one of New Zealand’s healthiest urban streams. As large residential subdivisions are built near the river, community investment in the stream’s wellbeing will become even more essential. The Avon and Heathcote Rivers, which have been urbanised for 150 years compared to the Styx’s 15, have no voluntary monitoring programmes. As Ms Coates works toward the completion of her degree in March, she will examine whether there are significant differences

between data collected by volunteers and that collected by scientists and paid researchers. One very real difference isn’t about accuracy as much as logistics. Environment Canterbury (ECan) has had volunteers do water monitoring in the past, particularly in the summer. Communications advisor Gerald Raymond said ECan has shifted away from relying on volunteers and has instead employed students and others to gather data. “To get the data we wanted at the time we wanted, we had to start paying people,” he said.

Council approves list of 30 priority facilities Christchurch City Council has agreed that 30 facilities across the city and Banks Peninsula should be prioritised for funding, further investigation and, where possible, repairs. The Council last week accepted a Community, Recreation and Culture Committee recommendation that 27 facilities should be prioritised for immediate action. However, it also added three more facilities to the list – South New Brighton Community Centre and the Scarborough Jetboat and Lifeboat facilities. Council staff will report back on the status of all 30 key facilities by December. A draft prioritised programme for the rest of the 1000 non-residential facilities included in the Council’s Facilities Rebuild Plan project was also approved. It will now be circulated to community

boards for their input, with a finalised programme to be presented to the Council later this year. Community Recreation and Culture Committee Chairman Yani Johanson says the list of 30 significant projects gives Christchurch and Banks Peninsula residents a clear signal that the Council is committed to reopening key community facilities. “There has already been a huge focus on our Central City facilities but it’s important that our community sees we are making progress on the community facilities that are important to them, including swimming pools, libraries, service centres, community halls and housing.” Council General Manager Community Services Michael Aitken says work will also be continuing on the

facilities that are not part of the significant 30 list. “We’ll be carrying on with engineering assessments, progressing insurance discussions and looking at repair and strengthening options. We expect to be able to also get on with repairs on a number of these buildings by the end of this year.” The top 30 facilities were selected based on a criteria that considered a number of factors, including the impact the building’s closure is having on the community. ONE of the Selwyn district’s fastest-growing towns, Prebbleton, will celebrate its 150th anniversary this month. The Prebble family first settled in the area in 1852 but it was 1862 when John Norris-Tosswill subdivided part of his farm and donated land for a school and church, marking the start of the village proper. The Prebbelton Heritage group has organised several events between October and December to mark the occasion, including a visual display individually highlighting each of the 15 decades of history since the village’s formation, a children’s artwork competition, and a tree planting by members of the Prebble family. Daphne McAven of the Prebbleton Heritage group said the town’s rapid growth made it particularly important not to forget its significant history. “With all the subdivision out here we just felt we were going to lose our village and in years to come people would never know that there had been a village called Prebbleton here named after a family of Prebbles.” The heritage group, consisting of Mrs McAven, her husband Derham, as well as Averil and

Graham Carpenter, had spent 10 years collating historical information. Along the way they built up a database of about 3000 historic photos. The group also wanted to pay tribute to the early settlers, who Mrs Carpenter said had undertaken a “massive task” in settling the area. “They’d sailed at least 100 days from England, they came here with their minimal belongings, they had to walk [the Bridle Path], barge their goodies down from Ferrymead to Christchurch, get horse and dray and come out here and make a home.” Prebbleton’s historic buildings had come through the earthquakes reasonably well with only the Union Church facing demolition. Prebbleton School principal Mike Hogan said the pupils had submitted about 200 pieces of writing and art for the occasion. It was important the school played a part, he said. “The school and the community are one.” Several descendants of the original Prebble family will be involved in the commemorations. Two of those, Walter and Hamish Prebble, said they were pleased to see what was happening and appreciated the work done by the Prebble Heritage group.

Nearly 300 former Lincoln students, who had been enrolled up until the war years, served in the armed forces, and over a quarter were in the Air Force. More than half of the 34 who died on active service were Air Force personnel. Council releases Port Hills reports THE Christchurch City Council has released seven detailed technical reports on slope instability on the Port Hills. These reports, available on the council website, were prepared by GNS Science in response to the Canterbury earthquakes and contain information to help council address life-safety risks from rockfall, boulder roll and cliff collapse on the Port Hills. “The findings were used by Cera to assist with decisions on zoning and are going to be used by the council for infrastructure, planning and regulatory matters,” council strategy and planning general manager Mike Theelen said. “The maps which accompany the reports will assist people to understand each report.” A series of three summary brochures had also been prepared to explain the technical terms and concepts used in the reports. “The information in these reports is technical and complex. However, it was important to

release the information for our community to have the opportunity to view the full technical reports and recommendations which were used by central government to make zoning decisions. “The reports will also be used by the council to carry out its regulatory functions, such as considering resource and building consent applications, and in the review of its district plans,” Mr Theelen said. The council and the University of Canterbury will hold a public geotechnical information seminar on Saturday, October 13, for the public to learn more about the information in the GNS Science reports. The technical reports and summaries can be accessed on the Council’s website at www.ccc. govt.nz/porthillsgnsreports and copies of the reports are available for viewing at the Civic Chambers building in Hereford Street and council service centres.

eans are terribly useful in the garden. Climbing beans can quickly cover walls and sheds with wonderful green leaves and pretty flowers, followed by a bounty of beans. A bonus is that they fix nitrogen from the air into the soil. Lastly they are an easy-to-grow mainstay crop, coming in a wide range of shapes, tastes, sizes and textures. Beans can be grown in the vege garden and in large tubs, raised beds or even hanging baskets and troughs if the containers are large enough. My childhood memories of beans vary from quite lovely to horrid. I loved picking beans – climbing up and down the bean frame to reach them was fun. But that’s where the joy ended. What happened to the beans post-harvest was criminal. Mum would boil runner beans until they were a pale grey and expect us to eat them. Even smothered in cheese sauce, I struggled to get them down. Maybe because of this I don’t have a dedicated bean patch in my garden. But many do, and I can see why. Beans have a huge cropping capacity and produce for a long time. The choice of what to grow can seem endless. Choose a bean or beans that suits your garden and the style of cooking you enjoy. he Town and Country Soc of Artists was formed in 1962. We had planned to have a retrospective exhibition of founding members’ work for a month in October 2012. The venue was to be Our City O-Tautahi. Our normal exhibition, named Art on the Causeway, has been held these last few years at Mt Pleasant Community Centre, which has been demolished. So we are combining the two events in one exhibition to be held on Oct 5th 6th and 7th at St Andrews College Hall.

Our Society was formed by Frank Gross an Austrian who came to NZ in 1934. He studied with Russell Clark at the Dunedin School of Art, then taught at the University of Canterbury Adult Education Classes. He painted with “The Group” 1954 - 1963. While teaching in and around Canterbury he had a vision to unite the various local art clubs under an umbrella organisation for the purpose of holding exhibitions, having painting days and workshops, as well as providing a goal to which developing artists could aspire. Trade outlet moves to Hornby Temporary Beckenham A NEW Bunnings Trade Centre is planned for Hornby to replace the one in Ferrymead that was earthquake-damaged. Bunnings has negotiated a new lease with the property owner at a Halswell Junction Road site and plans to be up and running by November. The company’s New Zealand general manager, Jacqui Coombes, said supplying commercial trades was a key part of its business. “We are really excited about opening this new trade centre to support and service our customers in the Canterbury region.” The site includes more than 2000 square metres of warehouse space plus a trade yard, offices and car parks. The site will be dedicated to servicing the trade market and include a comprehensive range of core building products. Bunnings said it was perfectly positioned to complement the existing network of stores in

Tower Junction, Riccarton, Marshland Road, Shirley and Ashburton. Customers will have the option of direct-tosite delivery or the ability to pick up from the trade centre or the existing Bunnings Warehouse stores. Ms Coombes said the team was extremely busy planning for the new trade centre at the moment. “We will endeavour to have the centre open as soon as possible to service our current customers and support the Canterbury rebuild programme.” Since entering the New Zealand market in 2001 through the acquisition of Benchmark Building Supplies, Bunnings has invested over $500 million in New Zealand and grown to include 22 large-format Bunnings Warehouses and 24 small-format stores in addition to several dedicated trade centres.

service centre opens A TEMPORARY Christchurch City Council service centre opened at the site of the closed South Library and Beckenham Service Centre on Monday. The centre is open from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. The council’s general manager public affairs Lydia Aydon said the public would be able to access all the services the Beckenham Service Centre offered before it was closed in July this year. “We know that the community has greatly missed the service centre since its closure so we are pleased to be able to offer a temporary solution that will ensure people can access all the usual services, including making rates



payments and applying for rates rebates, paying dog registrations and accessing drainage plans,” she said. The council closed the building after a detailed engineering evaluation showed it had a seismic capacity of less than 34 per cent of the new building standard, classifying it as earthquakeprone. Elected councillors voted to close all earthquake-prone council-owned buildings. Temporary repair and earthquakestrengthening work will be carried out on the library and service centre building and it is expected to reopen by the end of this year. The work, which will include the installation of steel propping and additional beams and plates to strengthen the building, will increase its seismic capacity to at least 34 per cent of the NBS, ensuring it is no longer considered to be earthquake-prone.

It has divided the residential green zone into three technical categories TC1, TC2 or TC3. If you live in the flat area of the residential green zone your property is in one of these categories.

Site-specific foundations are not unusual.

They are a guide to the level of site investigation required and the most appropriate foundations for your home. Houses with appropriate foundations will perform better in future earthquakes.

Your builder can use standard foundations for concrete slabs and timber floors.

If you are in TC1

If you are in TC2 Enhanced concrete foundations are needed and there are templates in Building and Housing’s guidance. Standard timber foundations can be used for houses with lightweight cladding and timber floors.

What was the basis for deciding which areas were TC1, TC2 or TC3? The boundaries were the result of intensive research and analysis based on a mix of historical and post-earthquake data, including geotechnical investigations, observed land and building damage and groundwater depth.

If you are in TC3 and your foundations need to be replaced There is no one-size-fits-all option. You need geotechnical advice from a chartered professional engineer and site-specific foundations designed for the ground conditions.

Designing foundations to suit ground conditions is not new. There are many other areas of the country where local authorities require specific engineering design for foundations. Foundations designed to suit to ground conditions are a sound investment to safeguard your home for the future.

Repairing foundations Not all foundations will need to be replaced. The guidance gives a range of options for repairs. You may need to consider replacing heavy roofing and cladding materials with lighter options. This will reduce the load on your foundations.

Foundations for TC3 homes Building and Housing’s guidance recommends three types of replacement foundation for homes in TC3. They are: deep piles, site ground improvements, and surface structures with shallow foundations. Chartered professional engineers will be able to determine what is the most appropriate foundation type for each property based on geotechnical information. International award for Orion CHRISTCHURCH-based electricity network company Orion has been awarded an international award for technology that proved vital in reducing power cuts during the city’s major earthquakes. The Apex Award for 2012 was presented to Orion last week by executives of the Utilities Telecommunications Council (UTC). The award recognises utilities that employ communications networks to benefit the communities they serve. Orion is the first winner of an Apex Award from outside the United States. The company won the award for its private, mission-critical radio communications network that withstood all of the Canterbury earthquakes, allowing teams to start to restore power immediately while maintaining communications in the field. The wireless technology shortened the

length of power cuts and was vital to Orion’s response. “Seven years ago, after a worldwide search for a modern wireless communications solution, we found the solution right here in Christchurch with a technology developed by MiMOMax Wireless Limited,” Orion chief executive Rob Jamieson said. “Together, Orion and MiMOMax developed the product over a two-year period and created a radio communications solution specific to Orion’s needs. “The result was a world-first wireless network, which has proved its resilience and value over the past 18 months.” The wireless solution allows Orion to ‘talk to’ various assets around the electricity network over a large and diverse geographical area, and operate and protect the network by remote control.

international airports. “There will be great economic spin-offs from the soon-to-be introduced flights. Tourists tell us there is something very magical about flying in over the Southern Alps to land at Christchurch Airport and as our rebuilt city takes more shape I hope more Adelaide residents will come check it out.” Lord Mayor Yarwood said 40 years of cooperation between the two cities was a major milestone and the flights would help develop the relationship further. “Our two cities have worked together on cultural, tourism, trade and educational projects since our sister city relationship started. It was very good to see our two universities working together after the February 2011 earthquake to offer Christchurch students places at Adelaide University for one semester. “We are keen to find out how we can give more support to Christchurch, particularly during the rebuild period, and see the establishment of direct flights as a great thing for tourism in both cities and surrounding areas.”

SISTER cities Christchurch and Adelaide look likely to become closer following a formal agreement by the two cities’ international airports to work together to secure a direct air service between them. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker recently hosted Lord Mayor of Adelaide Stephen Yarwood to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the sister city relationship between the two cities. Both visited Christchurch International Airport Limited (CIAL) to mark the announcement of a joint project to encourage airlines to fly directly between their two cities. Christchurch City Council, together with Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism, has supported the work by CIAL and the Adelaide Airport. “Christchurch and Adelaide have been linked for four decades as sister cities and that link will become a tangible, physical one when these flights are introduced, even though it may be a year away,” Mayor Parker said. “This is an excellent initiative by our

Support for arts classes ARTISTS and crafters from around Christchurch are gathering to support a programme of art classes for disabled adults. Alison McIlroy and La Famia Creative Arts said the charity would host an Art and Craft Expo on November 3 in Hornby. Admission is free to the family event, and proceeds will be used to fund the art and craft workshops on offer to disabled adults throughout the city. The event will feature a silent art auction showcasing a mix of work from the city’s artists and La Famia arts participants. There will also be craft stalls from local businesses and a café on site. Art tutor Tiffany Cavanaugh is donating one of her paintings and running a craft stall of her own work along with another selling works her student had created specifically for the event. “It has been great being part of this event and seeing how eager people in our city are to help with donated art work and participating in an event that has never been held before,” she said. La Famia Creative Arts is a Christchurch-based charitable organisation, which took on the services previously provided by Floyds Creative Arts established in 1975. It

THE Mental Health Foundation (MHF) and Healthy Christchurch are encouraging people to take part in an exercise aimed at improving mental and physical wellbeing as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. The Wellbeing Game encourages people to actively practise the five winning ways to wellbeing – connect, give, take notice, keep learning and be active. Evidence shows building these activities into everyday life results in greater creativity, higher productivity, better social cohesion and reduced physical illness. To play the game, people keep track of how they spend time on the five winning ways to wellbeing and enter the results online at www.thewellbeinggame. org.nz. The aim is to collect as many hours spent on the winning ways as possible before the game finishes on November 9. MHF chief executive Judi

Clements said the game was easy, fun and open to everyone. “Many of the things we already enjoy are good for us. The Wellbeing Game provides a fun way to capture the hours we spend staying well, but it also challenges us to do more.” People can participate in the game as individuals or form a team. The online leader board shows how you’re performing. Michelle Whitaker from Healthy Christchurch said the game has been piloted in three places over the last year and the evaluation showed players enjoyed becoming more mindful of their mental and physical wellbeing. “Playing the game makes you more aware of what good things you are already doing, how easy it is to tweak your usual activities to get more out of them and encourages us to embrace new opportunities,” she said. Mental Health Awareness Week is from October 8 to 14.

THE Rebuild Christchurch Foundation is aiming to bring more cheer to Christchurch families this Christmas. In December last year, Rebuild Christchurch launched Project Christmas, which saw $10,000 worth of hampers containing vouchers and gifts being shared amongst Christchurch families hardest hit by the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. This year the organisation is planning Project Christmas 2012 with the aim of reaching even more families, and providing Christmas cheer to those for whom Christmas is financially difficult as a result of the events of the past two years. The foundation is holding a fundraising dance and charity auction this Saturday, October 6, at the Roy Stokes Community Hall in Seaview Road, New Brighton to raise funds for Project Christmas 2012. Christchurch company wins contract in Norway CANTERBURY Seismic Instruments (CSI), which manufactures and exports structural monitoring equipment, has been awarded its largest international contract yet. Located at the University of Canterbury’s ICT centre, the company has been contracted to supply and install wireless accelerographs and anemometers at fixed points along the K2.3 billion (NZ$510 million) Hardanger suspension bridge in Hordaland, Norway. Designed in Christchurch, these instruments will detect wind-induced motion, with the system able to instantly communicate data to engineers and other personnel responsible for bridge safety. The suspension bridge will have one of the longest spans in the world at 1310 metres and will be 30 metres longer than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The project was approved by the Storting, Norway’s Parliament, in February 2006 as a replacement for a ferry connection between Bruvik and Brimnes in the upper Hardanger area. The project includes two 186-metre-high towers and tunnels at each end. Construction began in 2006 and the bridge will open in 2013. “This is a significant contract for CSI and we are very pleased to have the high quality and reliability of CSI technology selected for such an important project,” the company’s chief executive, Helen McLeod, said. CSI provides engineers and building and infrastructure managers with comprehensive, real-time monitoring solutions. Structures can be monitored for seismic activity, wind effect, liquefaction (pore-pressure), strain, water depth and other environmental factors. Using open industry standards for

communication, with remote access to data through a standard web browser, CSI Instrumentation is being used to monitor the health of the structure and to verify the design. “One of the benefits of Christchurch’s recent earthquakes was that the company’s instrumentation has been proven on numerous critical structures and transport facilities,” Ms McLeod said. “During the 10,000 earthquakes and aftershocks in 2010-11 in Christchurch, CSI equipment has captured one of the most dense datasets recorded over and around a fault rupture zone. “During the Christchurch 2011 February earthquake we saw key facilities able to reopen instrumented areas to the public within 20 minutes using measurements from our equipment to show that the motion on site was within the tolerance of the structure. We are now also seeing engineers testing buildings to check that day-to-day movement is in line with the design expectations.” The CSI system is monitoring seismic risks on several major public buildings including the civic office of the Christchurch City Council, terminals at Christchurch International Airport and buildings at Wellington Hospital and at the University of Canterbury and Victoria University. It is also deployed at Majestic Centre, a significant high-rise office tower in Wellington, and Lyttelton Port of Christchurch. CSI is working with the Crown-owned Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences to monitor fault-line activity in the Canterbury, Wellington and Nelson regions.

She is also an artist and her paintings adorn the walls of her salon. During the many years Jane has been a hairdresser, she has travelled extensively from South Africa to London and Europe, but her heart belongs to Antarctica where

she was the local barber for three summer seasons. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days IT’S the school holidays so there’s a host of family-friendly films at the moment, including Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. When we first met American wimpy kid Greg Heffley back in 2010 he was 11 years old just starting middle school - desperate to fit in and be popular but somehow destined to always be on the outer. Not much has changed in the intervening years, except that two movies on, Greg is now 13 and on the cusp of those ‘difficult’ teen years. It’s also the start of the summer break and he has a plan - to spend his summer playing video games - which brings him into conflict with his overlyenthusiastic father, Frank (probably a familiar scenario to anyone with sons, a TV and any kind of console).

Greg comes up with a cunning plan to evade his father’s scorn: he pretends he has a summer job at the local country club. This means endless days by the pool, smoothies on demand and, most importantly, gets him up close with one Holly Hills. But the wimpy kid wouldn’t be the wimpy kid if things went smoothly, so expect his plans to go awry. The Wimpy Kid stories are based on a series of books by Jeff Kinney, and director David Bowers and writer Maya Forbes know the golden rule of adapting children’s books: stay faithful to the original story lines. Dog Days is actually a combination of two books, Dog Days and The Last Straw - and if I have a criticism of the film it’s that

there are too many competing story lines going on. The result is that many appear from nowhere and don’t get the resolution they deserve. This irked me, but I suspect the target audience won’t mind too much, as their familiarity with the cast and characters will win them over. And the Wimpy Kid also has something else in its favour - it fills a gap in the movie market for those kids who suddenly decide they are too old for animation but too young for Twilight.

It’s a big job, Richie THE announcement that Richie McCaw has decided to put his rugby career on hold for six months at the end of his 2012 commitments has been greeted with very mixed reactions by the New Zealand rugby fan base. I can understand how this has upset a lot of people, and most of the reaction surrounds the fact that he is a very special New Zealander putting aside the fact that he is an outstanding player and All Black Captain. The one thing that we have recognised from the very start of his playing days is the fact that he just loves playing rugby! Regardless of the level he is playing he truly enjoys being on the field and mixing it with ‘the big boys’. It never appears to me that McCaw finds being involved at any level is an effort or a chore. Over the long period he has played he has continually adapted his role no matter how much the game has changed. He has always been a “follow me, lads” type player. He can never be accused of taking a shortcut or shirking the hard yards, and as a result he reigns supreme in the world as the very best

McCaw obviously wants, if it’s at all possible, to be involved in the campaign to be a part of the team that can win back-to-back World Cups in 2015, and he will know that if he keeps pushing his mind and body the way he has done something is going to give and he may well miss the chance. His decision does have a large risk factor. I vividly remember the legend Fergie McCormick telling me that you played every game you could because, in his words, “you don’t give another sucker a break”. McCaw will have weighed up that option when he made the announcement and he is obviously of the opinion that if he takes the break now he can come back in better shape and reclaim his spot. Enjoy your time in the sun, mate, because in my opinion you’ve well and truly earned the break.

PARENTS of twins or triplets are accustomed to passers-by doing a double take, so imagine what it’s like when that’s multiplied by 50. This week is nationwide Multiple Birth Awareness Week and the Christchurch Multiple Birth Club, which includes 254 families, held a mass walk through the Botanical Gardens to celebrate. It involved 50 families with about 130 children between them, including two sets of triplets. It was a play on this year’s theme ‘Multiples: Not a walk in the park’, which aimed to highlight the potential difficulties families could face

with multiple births – double the babies means double the cost, twice the workload and half the sleep, while many families with multiples also had other children as well. The rate for multiple births is about 15 out of 1000, based on data from 2010, while women who have had non-identical twins were four times more likely to conceive twins again. There were 1774 twin births throughout New Zealand last year and Canterbury has seen a surge in recent months, with 15 sets born in June, and 57 sets in the year to the end of July. IT was party time for the Christchurch branch of Youthtown on Friday when members joined in the celebrations for the organisation’s 80th birthday, while simultaneously celebrating the branch’s own first birthday. The birthday party included musical and dance performances, creative arts demonstrations and outdoor activities. A feature of the celebration was the handing over of three items for the time capsule, which will be opened when Youthtown turns 100. Three items from each of the eight Youthtown branches around New Zealand were selected for the capsule. The Christchurch items were a book on the Christchurch earthquakes, Christchurch Beyond the Cordon, which features an insert written by the Youthtown Christchurch team; a basketball in recognition of the importance of the game to Youthtown kids; and a photograph of the Youth Squad, which details on the back who they are, what age they will be in 2032 when Youthtown is 100 years old and what they want to be in 20 years’ time. Youthtown had been planning to set up a Christchurch branch just prior to the September 2010 earthquake, the organisation’s Aucklandbased CEO Keith Thorpe said. The impetus for going ahead and establishing a branch in the city came from the Break from the Quake camps organised in 2011 by Youthtown, which enabled 500 young Christchurch people to take a holiday in various North Island locations.

“After assessing the needs of the Christchurch community, we made the decision to establish a base on the eastern side of the city, which had been hardest hit by the earthquakes,” Mr Thorpe said. They initially set up in the former police station on Breezes Road, where they stayed for nine months before having to move out when the building was red-stickered. Two weeks before Christmas last year they moved into premises on Pages Road. Young people in the area had responded well to the activities Youthtown offered, which included after-school and holiday programmes, branch manager Amanda Murray said. “There was definitely a need, and we see them coming back time and time again.” A series of workshops based on physical, social, creative and technical themes included a carpentry workshop where the youngsters were making skateboard ramps, and this had proved quite popular, Ms Murray said. Youthtown originated in Auckland under the name Boystown, and changed its name in the mid-1980s. The non-profit Youthtown Foundation receives much of its funding from gaming. “It’s an example of the positive use of these funds,” Mr Thorpe said. “It enables us to provide activities that are affordable and accessible.” Anyone wanting to find out more about the organisation can visit www.youthtown.org. nz.

The birds arrive each September, having made the longest non-stop flight known for any bird – more than 11,000 kilometres over eight days – from Alaska to New Zealand, leaving the northern winter. Infrastructure rebuild prioritises the east FOLLOWING the Christchurch City Council’s receipt of the August 2012 Infrastructure Rebuild Monthly Report last Thursday, councillor Aaron Keown said although there was a perception that the eastern suburbs had not been prioritised enough, the numbers clearly contradicted that perception. “The report provides a clear indication of where works start and end. The Burwood-Pegasus Ward has had 80 projects completed by SCIRT

since September 1, 2011 to July 2012, at a total cost of $23.2 million. This is considerably greater than other wards, with Hagley-Ferrymead at 62 projects, totalling $18.9 million; SpreydonHeathcote 16 projects, totalling $6.3 million; and Fendalton-Waimairi at three projects totalling $209,784,” Mr Keown, who is deputy chair of the Environment and Infrastructure Committee, said. “I would encourage every Cantabrian to have a look at the

SCIRT website to see where the $26 billion on infrastructure rebuild is going. The rebuild is definitely starting in the east then moving to the west of the city.” The SCIRT website explains how work throughout the city will be scheduled over the coming years. Volunteers take part in tree planting at Southshore LAST Saturday’s community planting day at Southshore Reserve attracted about 130 volunteers including Southshore locals and a group from St John Opawa Youth. They helped plant 2000 native plants, 1200 of which were donated by Trees For Canterbury. The event is part of an ongoing project between Trees For Canterbury,

the Southshore Residents Association and the Regional Park Rangers of the Christchurch City Council. It is a continuation of planting to replace the plants that were lost in the fire of 2009, with the goal being to encourage birds back into the area by creating a food source with native plantings. Young accessibility activist up for award Continued from page 1 consultations, to blogging for accessibility website Be.Accessible, to starting up a website to connect disabled youth around the world. Beyond advocating for physical accessibility in building design, she is working to change the way people think about disabilities. “Traditionally, disability’s been seen as quite a negative thing, as quite a tragedy,” she said. “The media still portrays it as something to overcome. Be.Accessible’s philosophy is that disability is a unique experience that can happen to anyone, really, at any time.” The winners across seven categories in the Attitude Awards will be announced at a black tie event in Auckland on November 29. “I wasn’t really expecting to be nominated,” Ms Gough said, adding that she still wasn’t quite sure who had submitted her name. “Obviously it would be great to win it as well, but I’m just looking forward to the night and being able to network with all these amazing people from around the country.” Networking is a subject Ms Gough feels passionately about. Participating in the Oxfam International Youth Programme in New Delhi in 2010, she noticed something about the 300 attendees from 98 countries. Only she and a young woman from the UK were disabled. “We got talking about the lack of space there was to network with other young disabled people on an international level,” Ms Gough said. From there, INDY – International Network 4 Disabled Youth – was born. Armed with a grant from the Oxfam International Youth Partnerships Fund, the two have worked to develop an online space for young disabled people to share knowledge, support one another and empower each other to create social change. “We’ve kind of managed to get this up and running through Skype,” Ms Gough said.

She hoped the site would eventually consist of mostly user-generated content. “We want to make sure the people we involve in the site and logo are young disabled people.” Closer to home, she is a member of the Otautahi Youth Council and is the vice president of Junior Chamber International Christchurch. “Before the earthquakes I found I didn’t really go into town much because none of the bars and night clubs were really fully accessible, so I couldn’t really go out with friends and just have a good time,” she said. Worrying about which bars were and weren’t accessible took the spontaneity out of an evening. Ms Gough pointed out that full accessibility would also benefit the elderly and parents with prams. “There wouldn’t have to be such a big plan just to go out places. You could just do what you want and have a good time,” she said. Growing up until age eight in South Africa, living in Christchurch, travelling to India and Japan and more recently visiting her family in their new home in Melbourne, she has had a chance to see how Christchurch stacks up against other cities in terms of accessibility. It was pretty good, she said, but now is the time to make it even better. Ms Gough attended a number of Christchurch City Council and CERA consultations prior to the release of the city blueprint. “It’s easy to consult people but it’s a lot harder Home straight: Families and fans line the drive of St Bede’s College as runners approach the finish line to actually put things in place,” she said, adding in the Run for a Life. she was disappointed to find minimal mention of accessibility in the blueprint. “The worst thing that could happen is that they just do something really quickly and forget about the accessibility access and have to add it on at the end. St Bede’s runs for CanTeen cause Chelsea Shover

ONE hundred and sixty runners from St Bede’s College returned on Monday from running 100km each in hopes of raising $100,000 in total for CanTeen in the annual Run for a Life. After a liturgy at the school last Wednesday morning, the runners and 40 support staff of parents and teachers hopped into vans and drove off to eight locations around the South Island. The boys spent the next five days running back towards Christchurch. Waking at 6.15am, relay teams covered the distance, with each member running about 25 kilometres per day. Five runners would run five km while the others rested, and then switch, on and on, until they had travelled 100 km or it got dark. Rachel Pitcaithly, a special character teacher at St Bede’s, said runners were challenged to raise a minimum of $500 and other students – the “home team” – were challenged to raise $100 each. On Monday, Ms Pitcaithly said the school was on track to raise most of their $100,000 goal. “Some boys are up to $2000,” she said before the run started. She said students could relate to CanTeen’s mission of supporting young people, adding that over the years St Bede’s students had been

CanTeen members as patients or siblings. Along the way, the teams met people touched by their cause. Ms Pitcaithly said a man pulled over next to her team and handed them $50, saying he’d just been diagnosed with cancer. A family with a seven-year-old son stopped them. The boy had just finished chemotherapy. “I don’t like being bald,” he told the runners. “A couple of stories like that really touched them and spurred them on to run,” Ms Pitcaithly said. Overlapping this year with CanTeen’s Bandana Challenge, the Run for a Life has been a St Bede’s tradition since 2002. Last year, earthquakes kept the runners home from the long routes across the South Island. Instead, teams spent 12 hours doing laps around the St Bede’s track. Ben Lewis, ‘The Tractor Man’, was back again this year, though he had swapped his vintage tractor for a vintage car to ride along next to the runners. For the past several years, Mr Lewis has passed out lunches and chocolate to the teams. Tom Miles, a year 13 student, who said he was “not at all” a runner before, said the run had been a good new experience. Making new friends was the best part, he said.

LEADING New Zealand 800 metre runner Angela Smit has won the University of Canterbury’s (UC) sportsperson of the year. She reveived her award at the annual sports Blues Awards on campus last week. Smit made a dramatic breakthrough on the world scene this year, with a personal best for 800m, in finishing second to Beijing Olympic Games 800m gold medallist Pamela Jelimo, of Kenya, at a track meeting in Belgium. Smit, from Rangiora, sliced over three seconds off her previous best, set two years ago in Canada, in clocking 2m 00.67s, tantalisingly close to the New Zealand London Olympic qualifying time of two minutes. Smit won the national 800m title in Auckland in March and was second in the 400m and 1500m and is now ranked third on the New Zealand all-time list behind Toni Hodgkinson and Nikki Hamblin. Crusaders rugby forward Luke Whitelock, athlete Hannah Newbould and ice hockey player Jamie Lawrence were the other finalists. All Black rugby player Kieran Read is a former

Bronze medal for Boys High chess team Chelsea Shover THE Christchurch Boys High School chess team won a bronze medal at the New Zealand Interschool Finals held over the weekend in Palmerston North. Coach Mike Drury said this was the first time the team had medalled. “We were the only nonAuckland team in all the divisions to win a medal.” he added. Ed Rains, Tim Rains, Kai Lee and Hee Sung Park beat Palmerston by just half a point, in a victory that hinged on the outcome of one game. Ed, year 13, has been undefeated through the year’s secondary school tournaments, and the national competition was no different. “He’s the most humble winner that you’ll ever find,” Mr Drury said. During games, Ed said his main strategy was

“aggressive openings to try and win quickly”. At first board, he plays next to his younger brother, Tim, year 11. Tim has lost only three tournament games this year and was undefeated last year, when Christchurch Boys High reached fourth at the national tournament. On the individual tournament circuit, the Rains brothers often end up playing each other. Their father Clinton Rains said he taught his sons to play chess when they were in primary school, but they have long since surpassed his abilities. Mr Rains said Ed and Tim approached the game differently. Tim had more of a natural ability, a mind suited for the game, while his older brother had to work harder. “Ed got good just by practising himself and reading books,” Mr Rains said.

Elmwood Players tackle mature production Chelsea Shover

ON the heels of winning the Top Adult Production at the New Zealand Theatre Federation’s national competition with A Galway Girl, Elmwood Players are staging another play aimed at an older audience. Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell is based on real-life journalist Jeffrey Bernard, who wrote the “Low Life” column for The Spectator from the 1970s until his death in 1997. His columns about his life in London’s Soho district often concerned his nights spent at the Coach and Horses pub, horse racing and his deteriorating health.

“When he missed a deadline, they printed ‘Jeffrey Bernard is unwell,” Heather Giles, who directs the play, said. “Which of course was not true; he was inebriated.” The play’s premise is that Mr Bernard is locked in the Coach and Horses overnight and uses the occasion to share anecdotes with the audience. “It’s a play for adults, it’s not a comedy,” Ms Giles said. Ms Giles, who acts as well as directs, said she appreciated the drama’s basis in reality. “I think stories about real-life people are interesting, especially characters like him.” Garry Thomas, president of Elmwood Players, said he was happy with his troupe’s performance in the national competition. “Out of the South Island representatives we were the only one who picked up an award,” he said.
