VISUALLY impaired and blind bus users will find it easier to get around Christchurch after it was confirmed that flagging down buses is not an Environment Canterbury (ECan) policy. ECan is holding a second meeting with the Christchurch branch of the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind tomorrow to reassure bus users that they do not need to wave down buses. “There never was an ECan policy regarding flagging down buses so we’re not sure how this situation has happened but we’re saying there’s no such policy requiring bus passengers to flag buses down,” ECan spokesperson Robyn Hyde said. Visually impaired bus user John Newman said he was thrilled to learn that he would no longer need to flag down buses. “I understand from what ECan has said that if I stand next to the bus stop near the kerb the bus will stop, which is a huge relief to me. “It might seem small to some people, but when you rely on buses for all your transport it makes a huge difference to your daily life to know that you will be able to rely on the bus service.” Blind bus user Mark Luxon, who used a number of buses on his daily commute, described ECan’s stance on bus flagging as a “big relief”. “It was very awkward being forced to ask total strangers at bus stops to flag down buses for me. I want to be able to get about my daily life independently, and not having to wave buses down will take away a lot of stress for me.” Red Bus chief executive Paul McNoe said his company would follow whatever rules or policies ECan had in place. “We are happy to implement whatever policies ECan puts in place because at the end of the day it is our objective to carry passengers.”

RSA members are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a further three Defence Force personnel in the destruction of their vehicle as a result of an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association national president Don McIver said on Monday. “We offer our condolences to their families and friends at this terrible time of loss and will support them in any way open to us,” Mr McIver said. “We stand beside the members of the Provincial Reconstruction Team as they again face the death on operations of their comrades in arms. THE owners of Christchurch’s oldest residential building, the Pegasus Arms, are hopeful their bar and restaurant will remain part of the landscape. The 161-year-old building sits right in the middle of the area that has been earmarked for a health precinct in the Central City Development Unit’s blueprint. Alex Brackstone, who co-owns the Pegasus Arms with Bill Ness, said they were unsure what the future held for the Category I heritage building but had “loads of confidence” that there was room for cafes, restaurants and bars within a medical precinct. “We are going to have to position ourselves to speak with all of the right people and get the right information and hopefully be able to reshape Pegasus Arms. “Our belief is that behind this blueprint there will be reasonable, sensible decisions made about the future of Christchurch and we would fit perfectly into a medical environment.” The front of the Pegasus Arms was built in 1851 and in a strange twist was the site of the first meeting of the Canterbury Medical Society in 1961. From 1952 it was home to the Pegasus Press publishing house, which put out books by Janet Frame and James K. Baxter. It became the Pegasus Arms in 1990. Ms Brackstone and Mr Ness bought Pegasus Arms in May 2011 after the pair lost three

CHRISTCHURCH schools are urging 2degrees to “stop dragging the chain” and offer the free emergency bulk texting service supplied by all other New Zealand providers. The service allows schools to send emergency information to all parents’ cell phones via Twitter using a single text message. Banks Avenue principal Murray Edlin said he was frustrated that parents using the 2degrees network were missing out on “vital” emergency information. “It is even more important since the earthquakes for us to be able to contact all parents quickly in an emergency to let them know instantly what is happening. I don’t want to have to tell parents not to use 2degrees, but they really need to step up and offer the same service as all the other companies. “It’s not just for emergencies, though, as we provide all sorts of information including traffic issues and weather-related like the recent flooding which closed some roads around the school.” Mr Edlin said 2degrees had told him that it was not a service the company offered and said they were waiting to get feedback from customers on the issue. “They said they would consider it but not in the immediate future, which is frustrating because I’m not sure why they don’t consider it a priority.” A 2degrees spokesperson said while the company didn’t currently offer the free bulk

texting service to schools they would consider providing it. “2degrees is certainly open to looking at providing free bulk texting to schools in emergency situations. “We would be keen to speak to the schools’ aggregators (who provide the service directly to the schools) to see how we can work together in the future.” A parent at Banks Avenue School who did not want to be named said she would “boycott 2degrees straight away”. “I will tell all of my friends to get rid of them right away especially with current events and the earthquakes.” Meanwhile, New Brighton Catholic School had carried out a communications survey, which found that all parents using 2degrees wanted the company to provide the free texting service. One parent at the school had decided to switch to another provider after discovering they could not receive the emergency text messages. Principal Deb Daines said the survey also revealed that 100 percent of parents at the school wanted emergency information conveyed by text message. “It would be wonderful if 2degrees could get on board and provide this service and then everyone will be able to receive the same information. “We would love to talk to them about this issue.”

WHEN ‘Out of Place’ was planned, the artists in the show and the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu expected to be back in the gallery’s usual location. Instead, the exhibit, which runs until Sunday at the NG gallery in Madras Street, became part of the gallery’s Outer Spaces programme. After closing the gallery to make way for civil defence and Cera to operate in the wake of the earthquakes, gallery staff expected to move back. But closer inspection revealed a need for more extensive repairs and base isolation. Curator Felicity Milburn said the time line for repairs had not been set, but she hoped the gallery would reopen next year. ‘Out of Place’ is the fourth of the nine-show Rolling Maul series, which takes its name from the rugby manoeuvre and reflects the art’s inspirations. “It was a show that came out of some really tough times for the artists,” Ms Milburn said. The artists – Katharina Jaeger, Chris Pole, Tim J. Veling and Charlotte Watson – created works in various media to capture normal life disrupted.

New role a first for Women’s Refuge Christine de Felice THE appointment of Daryl Gregory to the role of men’s service development manager at Christchurch Women’s Refuge earlier this year marked a new development for the organisation. “It is the first (women’s) refuge in New Zealand that has started delivering services to men,” Mr Gregory said. The Christchurch organisation, the first Women’s Refuge to be established in New Zealand (39 years ago), wanted to expand its services from simply providing safe houses for women and children, and withdrew from the national collective so it could do that, Mr Gregory said. The move was drawing some comment from other branches around the country, he said. Mr Gregory was the founder and managing director of Christchurch-based He Waka Tapu,

which he set up in 1995 to deal with Maori violence issues. He has since restructured the organisation and relinquished his role as MD. “I wanted to go back to the type of work from where He Waka Tapu started.” After discussing with new Christchurch Women’s Refuge CEO Nicola Woodward the potential for their working together, Mr Gregory took up his new role with the launch of a pilot scheme, ReachOut, in North Canterbury. He oversees the community support work being provided for men with violence issues by family support worker Matiu Cheesman. The pilot scheme was funded for 12 months and if successful would be extended into Christchurch. It had already received positive feedback from the police, he said. till now nothing had really been done to address the perpetrators’ issues and the reasons for their violent behaviour. “We’re there to help these men by honouring the person while addressing the behaviour, and we find that most of them, about 75 to 80 percent, want to change their behaviour.” ReachOut was also setting up a peer support initiative, whereby men who had been in similar situations themselves could offer advice and help, he said. “We are looking for more men to be involved in peer support and we provide training for them.” Mr Gregory said if the community took the idea of supporting violent men on board, and took ownership of it, the issue could be managed at a community level. They were also hoping to provide accommodation for men, so that women and children could stay in the family home, he said. EVERYONE in Canterbury who could qualify for assistance to go digital with their television will receive information in the mail over the next 12 weeks. New Zealand television is going digital with the Canterbury region due to make the move on April 28, 2013. The Government has launched a Targeted Assistance Package to support those groups most likely to face financial or technical difficulties in going digital. Those people who could qualify for the package will receive a letter from the Going Digital team by the end of October with details on how to take up the assistance and go digital. The package is available to those who aren’t already watching digital television and are: - aged 75 and over with a Community Services Card; or - recipients of a Veteran’s Pension or Invalids’ Benefit; or - former Veteran’s Pension and Invalid’s Benefit recipients who transferred to NZ Superannuation at age 65 or over. “The mail-out will be staggered over the next 12 weeks across all of the South Island, with the exception of the West Coast, St Arnaud and Murchison, to make sure that those who qualify receive a timely response,” Going Digital national manager Greg Harford said. “People don’t need to do anything until they get a letter from us. Anyone who fits the criteria above and doesn’t receive a letter by the end of October should check their address is up to date by calling Senior Services on 0800 552 002 (for people aged 65 and over) or Work and Income on 0800 559 009.” Those eligible for the programme will receive the equipment they need to go digital and it will be installed at no cost. Training will also be provided, together with a technical support for 12 months. The first installations in Canterbury under the programme will be carried out in the next few weeks. It is expected that nationally around 58,000 homes will benefit from the package.

Migrants have trouble making Kiwi friends

A CHARITY poker event, aptly named ‘Poker Wars’, was held at the Casino last Thursday night. Storm Troopers, Darth Vader and Asajj Ventress were some of the Star Wars personalities from the 501st Legion that participated in the event. After a hotly contested poker tournament, over 50 media personalities were whittled down to 10, who were then matched with 10 Canterbury charities for the final table showdown. OVER 80 per cent of refugees didn’t receive post-earthquake assistance from the Christchurch City Council or the Earthquake Commission, according to a recent University of Canterbury survey. The study carried out by University of Canterbury health science graduate Mohamud Osman surveyed 105 former refugees from Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Bhutan, who are now living in Christchurch. Mr Osman said while most refugees coped well after the earthquakes he believed more support was required to help them adjust to post-quake life. “They coped really well considering 90 per cent of them had never experienced an earthquake before. “The main issue for them is that they don’t know how to access the local and government agencies and many didn’t realise they were entitled to receive help. A lot of the material is very technical, which makes it difficult for

non-native speakers to decipher.” Over 75 per cent of refugees surveyed, most of whom were aged between 18 to 25, said they coped well with the aftermath of the earthquake due to support from community refugee leaders and spiritual and religious practices. The study also found that anxiety levels were higher among women and married participants with children, said Mr Osman. “It’s natural that those with children would remain more concerned about ongoing aftershocks.” Mr Osman hoped that refugees would be able to access additional help from local and government agencies to enable them to recover fully from the earthquakes. “I would like to encourage refugees to speak up and ask for help and they also need home visits as it is difficult to communicate by phone and email when English is not your first language.”

CHRISTCHURCH brewer Carl Harrington was “very happy” following Harrington Brewery’s success at last weekend’s Brewers Guild of New Zealand annual awards held in Wellington. “We are in very good company with (previous winners) DB, 8 Wired, Tuatara and Emersons,” Mr Harrington said. The brewery took out top honours after collecting two gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the competition. “They collated all the points from the medals and from that we were named New Zealand’s champion brewery,” he said. The brewery put its success down to the fact that they had done a lot of work on their beers over the last couple of years, Mr Harrington said. “We have been tweaking recipes and developing new beers and different styles of beer. We keep perfecting what we’re doing until we’re happy with it.” Mr Harrington acknowledged the expertise

of his brewers Mark White and Matthew Thomson. “Mark has been with us for 20 years and Matthew for seven years. “We have been in business for 21 years, since 1991, so we’ve finally got to the top. This is the seventh year we have been with Brewers Guild New Zealand, and we’re very happy with this year’s result.” It had been a very good year for his brewery, Mr Harrington said. “Leading up to the awards we were named among the top eight pilsners for Anvil and Ngahere Gold, out of 27, and beer writer Alice Galletly, who tried a different beer every day for a year and wrote about them on her blog, Beer for a Year, named Anvil among her top 10.” Other local breweries that won medals at the awards were Three Boys Brewery, Twisted Hop, Wigram Brewing Company and Cassels & Sons.

PhD student designs Olympic racing suits A UNIVERSITY of Canterbury PhD student is responsible for the cutting-edge skinsuits worn by Kiwi track cyclists at the London Olympic Games. Lindsey Underwood spent the last two years of her mechanical engineering PhD dedicated to designing athletes’ skinsuits for BikeNZ, as well as researching the best body position for athletes to adopt on the bike to enhance their speed. The Kiwi track cyclists performed well at the London Olympics, with Simon van Velthooven and the Men’s Team Pursuit winning bronze medals at the Games. Ms Underwood worked with Stuart McIntyre,

who designed and sewed the skinsuit patterns, and said it was an honour to be involved with the Olympic team and BikeNZ. “We were trying to get the lowest drag force possible by changing body position and using the right equipment. From there I began looking at skinsuits as a side project and how different designs could reduce drag and help improve speed. I found a good skinsuit can gain anything from milliseconds to whole seconds, and as races can be won by milliseconds it can be a huge advantage.” BikeNZ’s Andy Reid said Ms Underwood’s work had added “invaluable experience” to their skinsuit development programme.

The Canterbury District Health Board supplies recipes and health information, giving co-op members ideas of how to keep, prepare and cook what they receive. “It’s not a handout. Families have to budget. The produce costs them $10, they have to pay in advance and because of that the project is pretty much self-funding,” Mr Dixon said. He said it all came from the Christian philosophy of caring for others. “The fact that all people are valued and loved and should have access equally to the resources of the earth and a healthy lifestyle.” He said in New Zealand that was becoming a challenge for a lot of people as the divide between rich and poor increased. Mr Dixon said the co-op was not taking away from the work of local supermarkets and greengrocers; instead it was introducing new people to fruit and vegetables. A FRUIT and vegetable co-operative established 20 years ago in Bryndwr has grown to help sustain almost 1000 Christchurch families. Christ Church Cathedral marketing and development manager Craig Dixon started the programme while he was vicar of St Aidan’s Anglican Church, in an area where many could not afford fresh produce. “It was cheaper for them to buy fish and chips, pies and pizzas,” he said. The Bryndwr co-op served about 140 families each week. Following last February’s earthquake the church wanted to do more community work and the idea to extend the fruit and vegetable co-op came up. By Christmas they had 350 members each week, and this year distribution hubs were started in New Brighton, Christchurch South and, most recently, Linwood. “We now have membership of 900, buying on average 830 to 850 packs of fresh fruit and vegetables each week,” Mr Dixon said, adding he thinks membership will soon reach 1000. Members put in $10 each week, which Mr Dixon spends at the wholesale markets, the same place supermarkets go to buy their produce.

THE Kaiapoi community will benefit from the Kaiapoi Theatre Company’s production of Chess in Concert on September 7 and 8. Kaiapoi Theatre Company president Andrew Bolitho and co-director Edward O’Brien came up with the idea to stage the musical after last year’s earthquake. Mr Bolitho said they wanted to find a way to give back to the Kaiapoi community and were delighted to be performing Chess in Concert for the first time in concert form in New Zealand. “We were actually very lucky as Edward was able to secure the rights to the musical without any royalties after the creators of the musical agreed to this due to the earthquakes. This means we can donate all the profits to help the Kaiapoi community get back on its feet. “It’s been nearly two years now since the first earthquake and in some ways it seems like Kaiapoi has been forgotten so we wanted to do something positive for the town.” The musical draws from the minds of Tim Rice – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulveaus – ABBA and Mamma Mia! With help from special guests, the full 50-member Risingholme Orchestra, led by Anthony Ferner and the Risingholme Singers, the show includes favourite hit songs such as One Night in Bangkok and I Know Him So Well. Mr Ferner returned to Christchurch in 1996 after 17 years based in Sydney. There he was a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and later the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and established a reputation as a teacher soloist and conductor on both sides of the Tasman. THE site where the historic Rhodes Convalescent Home stood until last February’s earthquake has been sold to retirement village operators. The original Rhodes buildings and estate were established in 1886 with a substantial contribution from the widow and family of early Christchurch pioneering figure Robert Heaton Rhodes. One of the first buildings on the Cashmere Hills, it was built in his memory as a convalescent home for Christchurch residents and the hill site was chosen to escape the city’s damp and smog, helping ill people recover. In 1971, it was transformed from a Victorian convalescent home to a retirement home for the elderly, and in 2010 plans were underway to convert

the building from a retirement home into apartments. The September earthquake caused minor damage, but it was repaired and the plans were continuing. However, after the February 2011 earthquake the building was red-stickered and demolished. Rhodes on Cashmere Lifecare general manager Alison Harrington said 16 selfcontained retirement apartments, which were built in 2000, remained. She said the Rhodes Memorial Convalescent Home Charitable Trust was made up of volunteers who did not have the expertise or finances to redevelop the site, so the decision was made to sell and for the trust to look at other ways to help the elderly in Christchurch.

The Rhodes on Cashmere site was taken over by the Hurst/Pratley group, which over the past 20 years has established retirement facilities in Dunedin, Timaru, Wellington and Havelock North, earlier this month. The group plans to develop it into a ‘Lifecare Village’ including care beds, serviced apartments and community facilities. The existing Rhodes staff and residents were staying on. Hurst Group director Geoff McPhail said it was an opportunity to start up a facility in Christchurch and the view from the hill was a big attraction. Mr McPhail said the project still needed to gain resource consent, but he hoped to be able to start building in the next year.

Mixed views on demolition of Cracroft House

Students restore site of future school STUDENTS from Seven Oaks School are working to restore the planned Halswell site of their new school. The school, which is currently based in Opawa, has partnered with Department of Conservation (DOC) staff to bring the fourhectare new school site on the corner of Murphys and Quaifes roads in Halswell back to its natural state before moving there in 2014. The site has three natural springs, which are headwaters for the Halswell River, flowing eventually into Lake Ellesmere, Te Waihora. Traditionally, the springs were part of a network that was a habitat for many native plants, invertebrates and animals and an important food source for local Maori, but for the past century the land has been farmed and the springs used as watering holes for sheep and cattle. The intermediate-aged class is working with DOC’s Cody Frewin to return the springs to their former state. They learned about the structure of a natural stream and collected data on the current water quality and temperature, bank structure, plant cover and the presence of fish and insect life so they can compare the results after their project. Intermediate student Anna Carson said she was horrified to see how muddy and smelly the spring was right now.

“We need to take action now to stop any further damage to the wildlife,” she said. Classmate Reuben Kinney said it was important to restore the water system to be more natural so mudfish and mayflies could return. Their next steps are to learn about native plants, develop a riparian planting plan and get underway with stage-one planting. Seven Oaks principal Owen Arnst said many of the school’s children were environmentally aware and passionate about creating a better world. “Often they are unsure about what they can actually do or how they can make a difference. This is a very real, meaningful and handson project they can lead. There will be many empowering learning experiences as they restore the natural environment and record the positive differences they make along the way,” he said. Seven Oaks is an independent school founded three years ago by Macpac founder Bruce McIntyre. Over the next 18 months they also plan to plant hundreds of trees in preparation for moving to Halswell in 2014. The school is inviting members of the public to join the development of the site. DESCENDANTS of Cracroft House builder Sir John Cracroft Wilson have mixed views on whether the historic cob cottage should have been demolished. It was gifted to Girl Guiding New Zealand in 1958 by Sir John’s great-grandson, but after the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes it was red-stickered, and following engineering reports it was deemed uneconomic to repair. Deconstruction started two weeks ago. Sir John’s great-great-granddaughters Caroline Bonzon, 81, and Felicity Aitken, 83, told CTV News they were proud of their family history and had fond childhood memories of the property when it was a working farm. They didn’t live in the cob cottage, the family had built a newer house up the hill, but Mrs Bonzon recalled staying there as a Brownie – she even recognised the flowery wallpaper, which was salvaged from a bedroom. They were both sad to see the old house go, but as with many historic buildings in Christchurch, they have a divergence of opinion about its fate. “I just think it’s good they are going to build a new one and that will be fine, I feel quite positive about the future anyway,” Mrs Aitken said. Community policing progressing in Phillipstown Samantha Early

THE Phillipstown Neighbourhood Policing Team has been up and running for the past eight months and its officers are pleased with the response they are getting from the community. A new programme for New Zealand police, the team works closely with people in its local area to jointly identify problems and come up with solutions. Christchurch has two such teams, comprising a sergeant and five constables. The other is in Riccarton West and both started at the beginning of this year. Sergeant Todd Webley said over their first couple of months they conducted a community survey to find the issues local people wanted to address.

The biggest concern identified was dangerous driving and road safety, followed by damage including litter and graffiti, antisocial behavior, alcohol-related issues and burglaries. Police also identified the issue of repeat family violence. Based on the survey they created a crimeprevention plan. THEY’RE not cuddly like a giant panda, or as awe-inspiring as a Bengal tiger, but Christchurch film director Peter Young hopes to convince his audiences that protecting the Antarctic toothfish from commercial fishing is something we should all care about. His documentary The Last Ocean, which argues for the need to phase out commercial fishing of toothfish in Antarctica’s Ross Sea, will hit Christchurch cinemas for the first time tonight as part of the International Film Festival. The Ross Sea is considered to be the last pristine marine ecosystem on earth and the toothfish is a keystone species. Mr Young said making the film had been a sixyear “labour of love”. A freelance documentary camera man, he first became aware of the issue when he was invited to work on a project filming in the Ross Sea. On his return he did some more research and came to the conclusion that was happening there wasn’t right. “You shouldn’t be going all the way to the bottom of the world to catch fish out of the most pristine marine ecosystem to sell to upmarket restaurants in New York.” Mr Young believes New Zealand has a special responsibility for pulling out of the fishery after being the first to exploit it in 1996. “Right at the moment New Zealand and the US are getting together talking about how they’re going to protect the Ross Sea but there’s a little hitch because the New Zealand Government doesn’t want to phase out fishing. “New Zealand led the charge in there and we need to lead the charge out.” While working on the film, he and two Christchurch friends launched the Last

Bringing the film to Christchurch was special not only because it was his hometown, but also because Christchurch was New Zealand’s gateway to the Antarctic. “I would really urge Cantabrians to get out there, see the film and see what is happening in their own backyard. It’s very surprising.”

THE rebuild of Canterbury following the earthquakes will drive New Zealand’s economic growth for years to come, University of Canterbury (UC) researcher Erica Seville says. However, while financial projections showed this, there would still be uncertainty for businesses regarding insurance, future seismicity, demographic changes and when and where they will rebuild, she said. Dr Seville was a chair at the Australasian natural hazards conference attended by 250 specialists at UC this week. Her overview of the Canterbury earthquakes and their economic and business outcomes represents the first part of a series of reports for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec). “Our research programme, Resilient Organisations, is tracking nine sectors of the Canterbury economy and has randomly selected businesses from each of those sectors,” Dr Seville said. “We’ve surveyed them three times on how they have been impacted by the earthquakes and will continue to survey them.” Looking at the recovery trajectory, Dr Seville said one sector where she had expected to see a boom occurring was building suppliers, but that wasn’t the case. “It was one of the worst-performing sectors with about 80 percent of businesses saying they have had a decrease in business since the quakes, and that was quite a surprise,” she said. “But that’s just at the moment – it will change.” For the hospitality sector it was “really a tale of two cities”, Dr Seville said. “Fifty three percent of those surveyed were doing poorly and 30 percent were doing really well and seeing an increase in business. The remaining 17 percent fell between these two extremes.” While the rebuild of Christchurch would be the main driver of Canterbury’s economic

recovery, it also held a potential pinch point, Dr Seville said. “The reconstruction will be very labourintensive and there will be a need to find sufficient numbers of skilled people; whether they will want to come to Christchurch and whether there will be enough housing and community facilities for these workers could be an issue. Also the high cost of rent – this could all create a potential pinch point.” Another issue was the slow start to the rebuild. Construction companies still needed to get their supply chains set up and organise their staff before work started on a major scale, Dr Seville said. “It’s still a fragile time at the moment and the challenges are still to come.” However, the end result would be positive for Christchurch and New Zealand as a whole, she said. “From a macroeconomic perspective, natural disasters tend to have a positive effect on a country’s GDP. The amount of money the rebuild will generate in Christchurch over the next few years will have a positive spin-off for other sectors of the economy and the rebuild will drive national investment and growth in the New Zealand economy through 2015.”

re you a spud person? I certainly am. Every year I look forward to the first new spuds of the season. I always aim to have my first crop ready for Christmas. The thought of fresh, new season’s jersey benne’s, gently boiled with lashings of mint and real butter make me excited. Growing potatoes is easier than most people think, so easy, you don’t even need a garden. Depending on the variety grown they take around three to four months to mature and be ready for harvest. Traditionally, most backyards had a ‘spud patch’ but if you are in between homes or renting, try growing potatoes in containers. Use anything from a kitchen bucket with holes in it, or try car tyres - stack two or three on top of each other. Old recycling bins and drums work, too. Even though the weather is still cold, now is the time to be thinking about getting organised for growing potatoes this season. The key ingredients to a tasty crop are sun, well dug soil, potato fertiliser and water. There are numerous different varieties of potatoes, choose a variety which lends itself to the type of cooking you prefer: Christmas Day - cliff kidney, jersey benne, Maris anchor, swift Roasting - moonlight, agria, rua New potatoes - boiling - Nadine, jersey benne, cliffs kidney Mashing - moonlight, agria, Ilam hardy Growing in buckets or planter bags – cliff kidney, rocket For a list of potato varieties available in stores, and more detailed information visit www.tuitime.co.nz Begin by sprouting or ‘chitting’ seed potatoes. Choose certified seed potatoes - these have been specifically grown to produce a reliable crop in the home garden and are free from pests and diseases that can harm and affect potato taste and harvest. Don’t be tempted to cheat and plant any of those rouge leftover potatoes that may have sprouted in the pantry. It’s very unlikely these will produce a decent crop. To sprout, lay the seed potatoes flat on a tray or box somewhere dry. Small green shoots will appear; once they are about finger length they are ready to plant out. The process can take two to four weeks. The soil needs to be loose to allow the roots to penetrate and the potatoes to develop. Dig garden beds to a depth of 20 to 30cm, next blend in Tui Potato Food and Compost or Tui Super Sheep Pellets. The

Bob Nettleton WITH large car sales now limping along in second gear, you have to wonder whether longterm big Aussie six-cylinder wagons like the Commodore could be facing a bleak future. Already, the Commodore has seen its archrival, the Ford Falcon wagon, culled. Along with the decline in sales is a slump in the popularity of this body style. Increasingly, buyers would rather be seen in trendy, but often less functional SUVs. One thing you can bet on is that in true Aussie style, the Commodore will not disappear without a decent scrap for its survival. Luckily, it has never been in better shape. For the last couple of years it has been using two versions, a 3.6 litre and a 3.0 litre of General Motors’ vastly improved Global V6 that delivers more power on fewer exhaust emissions and less fuel. The Commodore wagon supplied for this road test was the entry-level 3.0 litre Omega, costing $52,490. This is an extra $2000 over the sedan that shares the same six-speed automatic and sweet-running 3.0 litre V6 power train. For me, the 3.0 litre unit is the pick of the Commodore engine crop producing just 15kw less than its larger 3.6 litre sibling. With this smaller entry-level engine you quickly become aware of the need to pile on a few more revs than you would expect for an Aussie six. Max power from this advanced 3.0 litre form is developed at 6700rpm, underlining the engine’s keen appetite for revs. Those prepared to feed this appetite are rewarded with plenty of six-cylinder sizzle from what is a smallish V6 by today’s standards. The transmission has taken a quantum leap forward with a sophisticated six-speed automatic taking charge. It astutely manages the motor to provide the best balance of performance and economy with every clean, precise gear change. The Omega Sport wagon also has a fivestar ANCAP crash rating under its belt. Build quality still lands short of the mark compared to the better Japanese and Korean cars. However, it still represents a serious improvement on the

As a big, roomy yet practical load hauler, this wagon is mighty hard to beat, although load height is not as good as the previous model, Ride, and handling is hard to fault, although there is a hint of ride harshness over well-worn road surfaces at lower speeds. The Omega has none of the usual rear-wheel-drive wagon handling vices such as the sideways shuffle or bit of hip-hop during brisk cornering, when the suspension is ambushed on corners by bumps or potholes. What makes this wagon such a good all-round drive is its well-sorted ride, handling holding and steering set up that forges a good connection between driver, car and the road.

New tennis academy to compete with national body Tom Doudney

THE formation of a new coaching organisation to compete with the New Zealand Tennis Academy was formally announced in Christchurch yesterday. The new organisation is affiliated with the Melbourne-based Australasian Academy of Tennis Coaches and has come about largely due to dissatisfaction from some top New Zealand coaches with the governance of New Zealand Tennis. Patron Onny Parun, a former national champion who was ranked in the world’s top 20, said the new organisation was formed due to “the lack of support and protection” from New Zealand Tennis for its coaches. “As patron I applaud this brave stance and wish them the best of luck in this new endeavour.” A board member of the new organisation, Michael Mooney, also a former national champion who holds the highest coaching

qualification attainable with New Zealand Tennis, said coaching in New Zealand had been poorly managed since New Zealand Tennis took over the role from an independent coaches organisation in 2002. “Many coaches returned to New Zealand to try and help New Zealand tennis get back on its feet and what we found was the accreditation system just got way out of hand.” Mr Mooney said the Australasian Academy would offer higher standards of qualification for lower prices and he expected it would have more New Zealand coaches registered with it than with New Zealand Tennis. “If New Zealand Tennis was McDonald’s, well, a Burger King has just opened up across the street.” Mainland Press expects to have more on this story, including comment from New Zealand Tennis, in our next edition.

2012 Canterbury ITM Cup squad named THE Canterbury Rugby Football Union has announced its squad of 37 for the 2012 ITM Cup. Canterbury is chasing its fifth successive title under new head coach Tabai Matson. The most-capped player in the squad is Wyatt Crockett, who has played 67 games for Canterbury. The least-capped is Codie Taylor, who was involved in last year’s squad but did not take the field. Four players will have a good chance of achiev-

ABs know what’s expected TAKE the win against Aussie any way you can. Saturday night at the Sydney Football Stadium we were treated to a match that, it’s fair to say, the sooner it’s forgotten the better. Both teams – the Wallabies and the All Blacks – were way below the level that is to be expected from them at international level. It’s also fair to say that a good performance is very much more important for the Wallabies to showcase the game of rugby in Australia than a below-par performance by the All Blacks is back here. Seventy-six thousand fans turned out to watch this spectacle and try and restore interest in the game over the ditch, but what their national side turned on that night will do absolutely nothing to raise the profile of the 15-a-side game over there. There is not the passion for rugby in Australia and they are a poor fourth in the pecking order of sport the Aussies want to back. A punt was taken when arguably the finest rugby coach in the world, our own Robbie Deans, was snared to head over and take charge of the national team. Robbie started his term sensationally when he knocked the All Blacks over in their first encounter in Sydney, but that was many matches ago and the development of a world-class squad has quite frankly not happened. The slide in public acceptance of Deans and the Wallabies reached an all-time low last Saturday night.

Let’s face it, the green and golds were straightout awful and slipped even further away from their fan base to a point where they will struggle to be able to attract a crowd the size of the one that was in the stadium on Saturday night. Deans will be fully aware that a major part of his job description was to grow the game in the land of the dingo but in fact the reverse has been the case. All Blacks fans as well would have watched their team struggle to hit their straps and defend the reputation that comes with the title of world champions. They were well below par and unless they pick up the pace next week, questions will start to be asked as to how good really is this class of 2012? Gone is the excuse that the lads are coming off the high of winning the world cup and that this is the next season’s hangover. These are the most experienced, professional, wellrewarded bunch of rugby players this country has available. Week in week out, polished performances are quite rightly being demanded and this group of players is acutely aware of what is expected. The pleasing thing to come out of Saturday’s performance is that coach Hansen will be entitled to expect a much-improved performance out of his charges, whereas coach Deans will know he’s painted himself into a corner that even savvy as he is, he will find it hard to get out of.

There will be a massive street parade with performers from all over the world. “Apparently Highland dance has become very popular in China so it’s exciting to be the first group of New Zealand Highland dancers to perform in China.” Chantelle took up Highland dancing when she was five and from her first appearance on stage she was hooked on performing. “I just flourished and from the first time I went up there I couldn’t stop smiling. “I try to show people my passion for Highland dance through my performance.” Being crowned New Zealand Highland dancing champion for the third year in a row last month was an “amazing” experience for Chantelle. “It was a wonderful feeling to see all my hard work pay off and there were quite a few tears. “I hope I can carry on dancing for as long as possible because I love it so much.” Chantelle enjoyed the collaborative approach of performing in a team, which differed from her usual individual dance performances. “You have to be spot on and everyone in the team needs to be perfectly coordinated so it is challenging but a lot of fun. “It’s a whole different side of Highland dancing and you bounce energy off each other.” Chantelle, who trains six days per week, said performing Highland dance routines required a very high level of fitness. “It’s 30 minutes of non-stop dancing so we do a lot of strength training to stay in shape. “I do gym work and for the group performances there’s a lot of video dance training because we’re spread out all over the country.” Along with the festival, Chantelle was also

A GOURMET menu of peppered steak with baked potatoes followed by chocolate tarte helped Avonside Girls’ High School secure second place in the recent Alliance Française French cooking contest. The team of four year 12 and 13 French language students devised their own menu, which was judged on its presentation, taste, “Frenchness” and level of difficulty. The girls had two hours to cook their main course and dessert at the inaugural event, which was held at Christchurch Girls’ High School. Avonside Girls’ High School joint head of

department of languages Caroline Chambers said she was delighted with her team’s result, particularly the “delicious” chocolate tarte, which was cooked to perfection. “The girls planned the entire menu themselves from the dishes to the time management and buying the ingredients. It was a roaring success and they learned a lot from teamwork skills to planning and organising their time. “They also had to give a brief presentation of their dishes in French.” A team from Burnside High School won the contest.

Shirley Boys’ beats old rivals in final Derek Hay

The final under-18 division 1 game between Shirley Boys’ High School and Christchurch Boys’ High School certainly lived up to its billing as the league decider earlier this month. Both schools were comfortably ahead of the rest but Shirley had been chasing Christchurch BHS all season and was behind on goal difference. At the ASB Football Park (formerly English Park) with its perfect playing surface, the game started with an intensity that exemplified the traditional rivalry between the two schools. The game was barely 30 minutes old when a lapse in concentration allowed Christchurch BHS to steamroll through the middle and score with an unstoppable finish. A few minutes later, while Shirley was obviously still in shock from the first goal, Christchurch BHS struck again. Christchurch pressure caused a turnover and, with absolute precision, the Christchurch striker buried ball into the net for 2-0. Halftime arrived with no let-up in the intensity. He turned the defender from right to left, drove into the penalty box and finished with a classic shot to the far post. 3-2 Shirley! Shirley then claimed the ball for the next few minutes and, at the final whistle, celebrated their second title in a row, having also won in 2011. It was an emotional moment for the players as well as their families, and was well deserved.

Waimairi Primary finds chess success

JAMES Paget, age 10, learned to play chess three years ago from a classmate. Now, he plays at lunch, in competitions and at home with his father. “Until March, he always thrashed me,” James said. “Now I can thrash him.” Today, James will lead Waimairi Primary School’s chess team at the A Grade finals of the Canterbury Inter-School Chess Championships. Three weeks ago, the school’s A and B teams each won their divisions in the Waimairi Zone, beating a field of five other schools. “Our teacher is really chessy,” said B team captain Oscar Cunningham. A visit to Martin Lukes’ fifth and sixthyear classroom bears this out: during lunch, students bring out chess boards and start playing while classmates gather to watch.

The students talk excitedly about their favourite strategies and past games. Oscar said he liked to lead with a four-move checkmate series. “If it doesn’t work, you can still work off it,” he said. “It’s a good game starter.” Chess is a great way for students to practise thinking and communication, Mr Lukes said, adding that the game fits all the key competencies. For the past eight years, he has coached Waimairi’s chess teams, including A and B co-ed teams – though this year’s happen to be all boys – and a girls’ team. James said he played an average of three games per week to practise, though tournaments can involve five in quick succession. He learned an important lesson about maintaining focus last year at a school-

wide tournament. “I got to the final,” he said. “Unfortunately, I had played three or four already. I was a bit excited.” His opponent was much less tired, having played only one match. “They ran away with it. They took my queen,” James said. “I quit.” Now, he concentrates during a match by thinking of maths problems and working out all possible moves in his head. Oscar said he usually thinks of a song, or sometimes distracts his opponents by engaging them in conversation. Today’s contest at Cobham Intermediate is for A teams only. The next rounds, South Island Championships in Ashburton and nationals in Palmerston, will take place in September.

Safety cycling tips

I wholeheartedly love the sport of cycling but my two biggest bugbears are crashing and getting cold. So, while the last few weeks have reminded us all that winter is not over yet, here are some of my tips for keeping warm on the bike during winter: A sleeveless vest is very useful as you won’t get too hot going uphill but it keeps the wind out on downhills. When riding in rain, hail, or at night, wear a brimmed cap under your helmet. This works well in the rain for those who wear prescription glasses; it stops the stinging from hail on the face and for on-coming car lights at night you just dip your head to block them. Use newspaper down the front of your cycle jersey (but not against the skin), as a means to keep the wind out, warmth in and sweat away from skin.

If you need to keep training when it’s dark, cold and wet then make the wind-trainer part or all of your daily training session. Make sure you have a few specific training sessions up your sleeve to keep things interesting. When the conditions aren’t favourable for training effectively (comfortably and fast) I often finish a training ride prematurely on the road so I can make the last hour on the trainer where you can keep warm, refuel and avoid an untimely puncture. Finally, I must point out that while I’m an advocate of taking the occasional ride in the rain to ‘harden’ you against the elements and prepare you for the inevitable day when you will have to race or finish a ride in the Guardians of history: Bronwyn Matthews and Dr Chris Jones edited a book celebrating the rare books rain, make sure you follow these tips so you in the University of Canterbury’s library. eternally enjoy this great sport! Waimairi Kiwanis collect funds, blankets

BRONWYN Matthews, liaison librarian for special collections at University of Canterbury (UC), learned last week that she won the John Harris Award, which recognises notable publications by librarians. Ms Matthews was recognised for her work on the book Treasures of the University of Canterbury Library, which she edited with UC senior history lecturer Dr Chris Jones. The Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa has presented the John Harris Award to 20 recipients since establishing the award in 1961. Dr Jones led the Treasures project. Ms Matthews worked with him to choose about 40 rare texts – among them a 1611 King James Bible, Japanese wood block print books, and medieval manuscripts

– from UC’s collection. They then matched each with a writer to compose an article about the piece. Ms Matthews said many people have donated books and materials to UC’s libraries over the years, and the resulting collection is diverse. The book, published in March, has already been used in history classes. Ms Matthews said it was especially relevant to discussions about digitising rare materials. Dr Jones said Ms Matthew’s indepth knowledge of the UC collection was vital to the project. “Bronwyn was crucial to the production of the book and without her it would not have achieved the high academic standards that I believe it has done; nor would it have reflected the breadth and range of our collections in the way that it does,” Dr Jones said.

THE Kiwanis Club of Waimairi has raised $3000 and collected donations of blankets and clothing for the Salvation Army to distribute to children in the eastern suburbs. Wendy Henthorn, secretary of the Waimairi club, said that since the earthquakes her club had been collecting warm clothes and blankets for children living without sufficient heat in substandard homes, garages, or vans. The club, comprised of 12 women, also knits squares to make blankets. The Waimairi club delivered the donations to the Iverson St Salvation Army last week. Gilly Blacklee, a Salvation Army co-ordinator

of community care, who helped receive the items, called the donations “a very substantial amount”. Mrs Henthorn said her club raised money and received clothing and blanket donations from Kiwanis chapters in the North Island, New Caledonia and French Polynesia. The club also donated to Plunket from the fundraising, supplying jumpers, trousers, beanies and socks for two, three and four year olds. Mrs Henthorn said Kiwanis focused on preschool-aged children because older children received support at school.

Inspired by the memory of her aunt, who died of cancer four years ago, Ella visited the Christchurch Oncology Ward to see how she could help children being treated there. Though she wasn’t permitted to meet the children in the hospital, staff told her of the particular need for toys and games to entertain the boys between ages 10 and 15. Donations and programmes tended to focus on younger children, while older boys were more overlooked. “They’re expected to be OK with it all,” Ella said, “but they are as upset.” And because the Christchurch Oncology Ward served the whole South Island, some were far from their families and friends.

Cupcakes for a cause: Ella Minehan Fitzgerald sold cupcakes at the Winter Children’s Food Festival to raise money for children in the Christchurch oncology ward.

Ella learned that the ward had an Xbox but few games. She decided she would tap into her love of baking to raise money to purchase video games and other toys for the ward. She spent eight hours making and icing the chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, with help in the last stretch from her older sister. Along with some friends, she sold the cupcakes at the recent Winter Children’s Food Festival at Riccarton House and Bush Grounds, where she also received donations in a piggy bank. In total, she sold 148 cupcakes and raised $328. Early on, Ella realised the money she raised wasn’t going to be quite enough to buy all the games and toys she wanted to give. Before and after the bake sale, Ella wrote letters to and met with various businesses to ask for donations. Countdown supplied $120 worth of ingredients and colourful baking cups. Smiggle and Paper Plus donated toys, and Ella is still waiting to hear from other companies. Her mother Judy Minehan said Ella also plans to negotiate for better deals on the items she will purchase.
