COMMUNITY action could help solve a spate of eastern suburbs arson attacks, according to Fire Service Christchurch area commander Jon Graham. The series of arson attacks over the past three weekends razed the landmark 52-year-old Leander Building at Kerrs Reach in Avonside Drive and damaged Aranui High School, Avondale Primary and Aranui Kids First Kindergarten. The attacks stepped up a notch at the weekend with seven fires lit in the early hours of Saturday morning in Aldershot and Portsmouth streets and Ben Rarere Avenue in Aranui. Four of the fires were lit at properties and at Year 13 common room relocation.

Gymnastics school South Brighton bridge switching to one-way seeks new home

The bridge will remain open in both directions REPAIR work on South Brighton’s Bridge Street bridge, which will reduce the bridge for cyclists and pedestrian traffic. Alongside the bridge repair work, replacement to one lane and one-way for up to a year, will begin in coming weeks and take approximately of the street’s wastewater pipe is continuing. 10 to 12 months to complete. Gina McKenzie THE imminent demolition of QEII stadium has spurred the earthquake-damaged Christchurch School of Gymnastics, which caters for over 1000 members, to step up its search for a new site. The 2200-square-metre school, which has a 45-year lease, opened next to the stadium in 1996 and caters for all ages from preschoolers through to adults. Christchurch School of Gymnastics CEO Avril Enslow said while it was terrible to witness the demise of QEII she was pleased that the Christchurch City Council had prioritised the development of a new gymnastics centre. “We’re an immediate priority in their places and spaces document in March, but it’s a matter of how long that takes. “It’s hard to say where we’ll relocate because we need a footprint of 2500 square metres.

Ms Enslow supported the idea of sports hubs scattered throughout the city offering a variety of sports in one location. “We’d prefer to be located in a sports hub because we’ve had great crossover at QEII. After dropping their children off parents could go to QEII for a swim or to the gym.” Toni Soppet, of Parklands, whose daughter attends weekly preschool gym classes, was thinking of moving across the city due to the lack of recreational facilities in the eastern suburbs for children. “There’ll be nothing here for kids once the gym goes. “I already drive my daughter to swimming classes and once the gym goes I will have to travel for everything so it makes sense to move. Something will be built in the east but I don’t know how long that will take and I don’t

Tenants scared to stand up for rights Tom Doudney

TENANTS are scared to stand up to landlords because of the lack of options in the Christchurch rental market, Tenants’ Protection Association manager Helen Gatonyi says. “Many people who would like to move are well informed. “They understand what their rights are and they understand that what they’re living in or what the landlord is doing or proposing to do is not OK and it’s sometimes unlawful,” Ms Gatonyi said. “However, they’re not exercising their rights because … they know there is nothing out there for them to move into, so that’s a problem – that’s a big issue and one that comes through an awful lot.”

Ms Gatonyi said the situation had arisen because of the issues of affordability and shortage of available alternative properties in the Christchurch rental market. It was getting harder for the association to advocate for tenants and produce a “win-win” outcome for both parties. “That is because landlords are not as benevolent or generous in allowing tenants to continue on, where previously with the support systems that were offered, they were.” She acknowledged that, like tenants, many landlords were currently under stress but said that anyone in the business of renting out a property should understand that it needed to meet a decent standard for living in.

THE gates to the ruined QEII Stadium were opened to media for the first time since the February 22 earthquake last week, ahead of the auction of its famous athletics track. Pieces of the track, where John Walker and Dick Tayler achieved glory in the 1974 Commonwealth Games, together with other memorabilia items are up for sale in the Back on Track auction. New Zealand Spinal Trust chief executive Ben Lucas said the venue and its “iconic” track meant a lot to the generations of Christchurch residents who had grown up with it. “As an athlete myself I’ve done hundreds, if not thousands, of kilometres around this track and I couldn’t sit by and think of the track being scraped up and thrown into a landfill and being lost and gone forever. QEII is where legends have been made.” Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button said QEII had been “like the town hall of sport in Christchurch”. “It is tinged with sadness but it is wonderful there can be a win-win in terms of the track and opportunity for New Zealanders to own

a little piece of history and contribute to the New Zealand Spinal Trust into the bargain.” New Zealand Athletics chairperson Annette Purvis said QEII had been a “strong heart and a strong base” for athletics in Canterbury and the wider South Island. “I think it’s wonderful that some of those treasured memories that are really dear to us in athletics are going to be kept.” Christchurch City Council recreation and sport places and spaces manager Stuart Graham said some plants and equipment had been salvaged from the stadium but otherwise little would be saved as retrieval posed a safety risk. The stadium’s 14,500 seats were among items which would not be saved. “I think they’re about $14 per seat and they’re not worth someone’s life,” he said. The Back on Track auction, which began on August 1, will conclude tomorrow evening with a function at the Westpac Business and Community Hub in Addington. During the final two minutes of the auction, bidders at the function will be able to compete with those bidding online through TradeMe.

Radio Network House building implosion

Christchurch soldier killed in action

The former Radio Network House located in Gloucester Street, was demolished by explosives last Sunday. This was the first building in Christchurch to be brought down using the technique of implosion. Charges placed strategically throughout the building, were detonated in sequence, causing the structure to collapse in a controlled pattern and direction, within a confined area. The event attracted a large audience, some of whom had camped overnight in Latimer Square. Many in the crowd sported dust masks, which were not needed as the cloud quickly settled to the west. From the initial detonation to the final collapse, the operation was over in less than 10 seconds.

FRIENDS and family of Christchurch soldier Lance Corporal Pralli Durrer are in mourning after the 26-year-old was killed while serving in Afganistan on Saturday. The armoured vehicle LCP Durrer was travelling in was targeted by insurgents in an attack that also killed Lance Corporal Rory Malone, of Auckland, and left six other New Zealanders injured. The attack happened when New Zealand troops were called in to help local forces in the arrest of an insurgent in the province of Bamiyan. Those who knew LCP Durrer have expressed their grief and paid tribute to his friendly nature.

THE Feast of Canterbury festival, which had been scheduled to run next month, has been moved to March 2013. Organiser Taste Events believed the new March date would give participants more time to develop their menus and come up with unique events to run during the festival. Festival director Sam Marchant said the weather was also a deciding factor as many businesses were operating out of temporary accommodation. March would be much warmer and encourage more people to participate in the events on offer, he said. The newly themed Canterbury’s Food and Wine Month will see participants from across the food industry come together to celebrate the region’s food and wine. The event will run from Friday, March 1, to Sunday, March 31, 2013.

Free youth clinic returns to Christchurch Chelsea Shover

AFTER closing in April 2010 due to lack of funds, Christchurch’s free youth clinic is reopening on Saturday. Formerly the 198 Youth Health Centre on Hereford Street, version two – the 298 Youth Health Centre – will be situated at 298 Barbadoes St. Dr Sue Bagshaw, who heads the clinic’s all-volunteer staff, said the clinic fundraised and received grants to cover the $168,000 necessary to renovate and lease the building and purchase equipment. She said the clinic would likely require a budget of about $500,000. The clinic will seek funding from multiple sources, Dr Bagshaw said, to avoid burdening the Canterbury District Health Board. While the clinic was closed, many former patients – a number who earn low or casual wages or are on the benefit – struggled to find and afford medical care. With a staff of

three doctors and three nurses, the clinic will provide comprehensive physical and mental health services. “Investing in the health of young people is really, really important for the health of our nation,” Dr Bagshaw said. The new location is more than a convenient number; it’s also part of the new Youth Hub growing on Barbadoes St. Sixteen organisations, such as Volunteer Canterbury, Actionworks, Urban Psychotherapy and the Christchurch Youth Market, have already set up shop in the surrounding blocks. Twelve more are on the waiting list. The public are invited to an open day at the clinic this Saturday from 11am to 3pm. Crusader Robbie Fruen will be on site to kick off the open day and to show support for the principles of this clinic, created especially for Christchurch youth up to 25 years of age.

Engineering assessment work on schedule Christchurch City Council is on track with a major programme of engineering assessment work, with more than half of the required assessments on its non-residential facilities completed or underway. The Council is carrying out Detailed Engineering Evaluation (DEE) assessments on all its buildings following the earthquakes. The entire programme is expected to take another year to complete. Of the Council’s 1009 non-residential buildings, a total of 150 detailed engineering evaluation (DEE) assessments had been completed by the end of June while a further 378 were underway. DEE assessments on nine City Housing facilities have also been completed or are underway, and more assessments will continue over the next year. DEE assessments help the Council to determine the level of damage a building has sustained and its ability

to withstand future earthquakes. The assessments help the Council to decide whether a building should remain open, and inform discussions with insurers and decisions about a building’s future. General Manager Community Services Michael Aitken says while assessments have unfortunately led to the closure of some much-loved facilities over the past few months, it is important that the Council is providing safe buildings for its staff to work in and the public to visit. The Council has decided to close all buildings that are below 34 percent of the New Building Standard (NBS). “It has been heartbreaking to close facilities at a time when our community has lost so many others and, understandably, people want to know when these buildings will re-open. “While our engineering assessment programme continues, we are also developing a prioritised repair programme for our buildings, which will be presented to elected members for consideration in September.”

Council buildings yet to receive DEE assessments have had Level Two Rapid Assessments, which are a visual assessment by an engineer of the inside and outside of a building. Each DEE assessment can take up to two months to complete and, because they often include a number of invasive tests such as the removal of wall claddings or linings, may identify a building is more damaged than was originally thought. Mr Aitken says, “Some people have asked why it is taking so long to assess our buildings. All buildings that were not fit to occupy when they received Level Two Rapid Assessments have remained closed. “With 1600 buildings to be assessed, the Council has had to prioritise these assessments. The festival opens on 14 September for a month and will see Hagley Park Events Village transformed into Hagley Park Ice Station. The Christchurch Football Club was the first club in New Zealand to play the game that would become rugby and has since produced 31 All Blacks including current captain Richie McCaw. A book set to be released in time with the club’s 150th anniversary celebrations in Easter next year will chronicle its proud history. Tom Doudney reports… TWO teams of 22 players battling over two hours for a 1-1 draw doesn’t sound much like the game of rugby we know and love today. As it turns out, however, the August 1863 Cranmer Square match between Christ’s College and the ‘Gentlemen of Christchurch’ has a special place in the history of our national sport. Soon after the game, and perhaps because of it, the Christchurch Football Club was formed on September 3 of that year. The club’s history has already been the subject of three books released for its 50th, 100th and 125th anniversaries. Now, former player and long-time club member Tony Murdoch, whose father and grandfather also played at the club, is working on the latest version of the story. Mr Murdoch said that although the Nelson Rugby Football Club was known as New Zealand’s first rugby club (founded in 1870), the Christchurch Football Club was the first in the country and believed to be the second in the world after Blackheath in England to play a version of the game that would become rugby. Newspapers from the period told a very

interesting story on the development of the game at both clubs, which would come out in the book, Mr Murdoch said. “There is a real element of controversy around the terminologies, and in the research I’m doing it’s interesting reading the accounts of the Nelson game and earlier accounts of the Christchurch game as there really doesn’t seem to be a great deal of difference.” The game had changed a great deal since those early days. “It was very much a game of kicking. Passing really doesn’t come in until the mid-1870s. The passing style we know seems to originate in Dunedin but that was very quickly adopted in Canterbury.” Although the book was still very much in the planning and compiling of information stage, eight interviews with the club’s living All Blacks had already been completed, including one with the late New Zealand Rugby Union chairman Jock Hobbs shortly before his death, which had been “a very moving experience”. Mr Murdoch found working on the book very enjoyable. “Especially talking to old members and trying to piece together this story of how

a sports club can last for 150 years when businesses can’t and public institutions can’t – so it’s a remarkable story of good people pitching into something they believed was good for the community.” The book’s title was likely to be based on the club’s famous war cry “Give ‘em the axe”, a phrase that had been used by supporters of an American sports team and was somehow picked up by Christchurch Football Club supporters in the early days.

Volunteer group celebrates 50 years Christine de Felice

IT was a day of triple celebration last Wednesday at the Christchurch branch of the nationwide organisation, New Zealand Riding for the Disabled. “It was the horses’ birthday (all horses turn a year older every August 1), it was New Zealand Riding for the Disabled’s 50th anniversary and we launched our new logo,” president of the Christchurch group Jayne Findlay said. “It was also an opportunity to celebrate with the people who have supported us over the years and to recognise the contributions of our coaches and volunteers.” The Christchurch group was established in 1973 and will mark its 40th anniversary next year. Established by Tom Aitchison, it was one of the flagship groups in the South Island, Mrs Findlay said. It was first located in Yaldhurst, moved to a second Yaldhurst site, then about eight years ago set up its present site at Canterbury Agricultural Park, where the facilities include an indoor arena. “That was built through vision and a lot of hard work.” The Christchurch Riding for the Disabled

programme runs five days a week, and currently there are more than 75 riders ranging in age from three to 70. “There is an equal number of committed volunteers who work on regular days every week, we have a talented team of coaches and we have 14 exceptional horses that know their job. The relationship between a rider and their horse is truly a special relationship.” Volunteers don’t have to have experience with horses as full training is provided, Mrs Findlay said. “Riding for the Disabled is not pony rides, I want to stress that,” she said. “It’s therapeutic. It helps build self-esteem, and helps with balance and building muscle strength.” Riders’ circumstances include being born with a disability, or being injured in a car accident. There are also former jockeys injured from falling off their horse, who take part in the programme. The organisation receives no government funding, but relies on grants, sponsorship and the goodwill of supporters. The Christchurch group boosts its funds by hiring out the arena to sports groups and pony clubs at the weekend.

Health worries for insurance victims Gina McKenzie

FRUSTRATED elderly residents have been left “bewildered and frightened” by insurance companies who they say have ignored their pleas for help. Over 300 elderly residents vented their frustrations to senior managers from Lumley, AA Insurance, IAG, Vero, Southern Response and the Insurance Council chief executive at the older generations’ insurance forum held in Parklands last week. The elderly demanded face-to-face contact with

insurance companies instead of “confusing” call centres and emails. Hoon Hay resident Jane Pitcher, whose AMI policy expires today, was left so frightened and confused after dealing with her insurer that she paid a $100 taxi fare to attend the event. “I’m so upset and I just don’t understand why they are saying that I am not insured anymore. “They won’t listen to me so I have given up and now I feel ashamed to be old.” Mrs Pitcher, whose 50 year-old brick home

sustained $129,000 of earthquake damage, said her house was falling apart due to ongoing delays. “It could have been saved if they had started repairing it sooner. “I have been blocked every way I go and I’m too old to deal with this.” Jan and Ken Oarr, of Burwood, said serious health issues had left them unable to deal with the stress of contacting their insurance company. Mr Oarr said Perth-based call centre staff he had spoken to had “no idea of what we’re dealing with”. “We’ve had to stop ringing them because it makes our health worse. “I could be dead before they get it sorted out.” Mr Oarr wanted face-to-face contact with a local insurance representative and a case manager to deal exclusively with his claim. “We just want our house fixed so we can enjoy the rest of our lives.” Insurance woes had also affected fellow Burwood resident Beryl Curtis, who put her

house on the market two days before the September 2010 earthquake. “My cancer’s in remission but it’s not easy to get around with most of your hip gone. “I just want to sell up and move away but everyone gets put off because they can’t get insurance. I have been with AMI for over 30 years so why they can’t transfer the policy to a new owner?” Wainoni Avonside Community Services coordinator Betty Chapman said insurancerelated stress was “knocking years off” the lives of the elderly. “A lot of them don’t have five to seven years to wait. They’re having anxiety attacks and coming down with shingles because they can’t cope.” New Zealand Insurance Council chief executive Chris Ryan said he realised the elderly would not accept any further delays or excuses. “We will get more staff on the ground to engage with the elderly on a face-to-face basis. “The elderly, vulnerable and young will be made a priority.”

Planting symbolises new beginning

HIGH-vis vests and hard hats were the order of the day when students, parents and staff of Discovery 1 school returned to the central city last week to plant native trees with the Prime Minister John Key. The trees were planted in Victoria Square, by the banks of the Avon River. Discovery 1 had been located in the central city above The Crossing bus exchange for more than 10 years until the February 2011 quake forced them to relocate to temporary premises in Halswell. Chair of the school’s board of trustees Karen Wylaars said the planting event filled them with hope. “It symbolises a new beginning and an exciting future for Christchurch’s central city, and Discovery 1 desperately wants to return and be a part of it.”

CRAIG Smith is one of four Canterbury students among 30 from around New Zealand who are heading off to an adventure this week to the remote Kermadec Islands. He is part of the first ever Young Blake Expedition, led by the Sir Peter Blake Trust, which departed Devonport Naval Base in Auckland yesterday. The group will sail on the Royal New Zealand Navy’s HMNZS Canterbury on the journey, which aims to create a legacy of young environmental leaders inspired to make a difference in their local communities. Craig and his fellow adventurers were chosen following a vigorous selection process at a Youth EnviroLeaders Forum earlier this year. The students will help with activities including shark-tagging, dolphin DNA sampling and foliage collection research as well as observe the Kermadecs’ unique flora and fauna and learn about one of New Zealand’s little-visited

Young butcher a cut above CASHMERE resident Timmy Watson says he is “stoked” to have taken top honours in a competition to find the upper South Island’s best young butcher. Mr Watson, who is 23 and works at Ashby’s Fine Meats & Deli in Sydenham, recently won the Alto Young Butcher regional final. Having competed in previous years, he was thrilled to take out the title this year and gave his boss credit for training him well. “I’ve had six years in the trade already and I love working with meat,” he said. He would now be training after work for the national final in Auckland on August 24, which

he was looking forward to. “Obviously there are the nerves, but I’ll keep training and I’ll be ready when I get there.” As well as the prestige of being named the national champion, the winner also gets a study tour to Europe. Kim Doran, from competition organiser Retail Meat New Zealand, said Mr Watson had faced some tough competition. “The competition in Christchurch is always fierce, and this year was no exception.” Entrants from as far away as Nelson and Hokitika had competed in an exam, interview and two-hour practical test.

New building system a world leader A LOCALLY developed timber building system that enables fast re-occupation after an earthquake emerged as world-leading at a recent gathering of international timber engineering experts. The World Conference of Timber Engineering (WCTE) held last month in Auckland was attended by more than 500 international researchers, engineers and designers. Presentations included research from the Structural Timber Innovation Company (STIC), a research consortium made up of New Zealand and Australian commercial and academic partners, including the University of Canterbury. STIC is behind the development of Expan – a unique post-tensioned laminated veneer lumber building system that offers superior seismic qualities and lateral stability for multi-storey buildings. In the event of an earthquake, an Expan building stays structurally intact and selfcentres through a controlled rocking mechanism and timber components that give strength without weight to minimise acceleration loads caused by ground shaking. The lower building

weight also enables simpler and more easily optimised foundation systems to be designed in areas subjected to difficult soil conditions such as liquefaction. Professor Pierre Quenneville, STIC research team leader and WCTE technical programme chair, said he received numerous comments at the conference that New Zealand was leading the way in timber engineering. “The rest of the world is now waking up to New Zealand’s recent advances in lowdamage seismic design of timber structures. Conventional design philosophy is based around an acceptance of some structural failure where people get out safely in an earthquake, but the building is not able to be saved, or major repairs deem it uneconomic to repair or unusable for a long time. It was clear from the conference that the Expan building system is currently the only one in the world that offers the certainty of low-damage design using engineered timber.” Christchurch’s first two Expan commercial buildings are due to go up over the coming months.

Japanese visitor numbers expected to grow MORE Japanese visitors are expected this summer as Air New Zealand boosts its charter programme. The airline is doubling the number of charter services it operates between Japan and New Zealand, with 14 from seven Japanese cities confirmed for the coming summer season. Six of the charter services will operate nonstop from Nagoya into Christchurch, with the remainder flying into Auckland. The charter programme, which is additional to Air New Zealand’s regular scheduled services

from Tokyo and Osaka, is expected to bring up to 3200 additional Japanese tourists into New Zealand over the peak summer months. Air New Zealand general manager Japan Ed Overy said the significant increase in charter services this summer reflected the strong growth in demand from Japan. The airline had worked in partnership with Auckland International Airport Ltd and Christchurch International Airport Ltd in putting together this year’s programme, he said. “We are excited to this year be operating

Retailer named award finalist A CHRISTCHURCH retailer has been named as a finalist in the Ernst and Young New Zealand entrepreneur of the year awards. Simon Thwaites from Silvermoon has made the finals despite losing two Christchurch stores and a former head office in last year’s earthquake. “I’m elated to have made the finals. It’s a great compliment to the company and particularly our Christchurch team,” Mr Thwaites said. “The last year and a half have

been hard, but our staff have just kept on keeping on and I cannot praise them enough.” The company has spent several million dollars over the past few years converting its outlets from kiosks to modern shops and the change is starting to pay dividends, he said. Mr Thwaites and his business partners launched a new party plan business last year and in October they will open the first Pandora concept store in the South Island at Westfield Riccarton.

Asti Newman Woolshed comedy fundraiser creates magical for Theatre Royal a sell-out South Island tour, Amelia Guild and Emma Newborn farewell concert FOLLOWING are bringing their comedy show The Bitches’ Box to Christchurch to support the Isaac Theatre Royal restoration project on August 25. The show throws the spotlight on man’s best friend and takes the audience on tour of the four-legged characters that can be encountered at the yards. Guild and Newborn said they focused their show on the concept of “what would two dogs talk about if they were holed up in the bitches’ box for 20 days”. The show provides a comedic look inside the inner workings of a dog’s mind. All proceeds from the show will be donated to restoring the Isaac Theatre Royal. Isaac Theatre Royal general manager Neil Cox said he welcomed the fundraising effort. “For Amelia and Emma to offer to do this special performance is just astounding. “It is tough enough out there on the New Zealand theatre touring scene for fringe theatre artists so fundraising through their hardearned profession and rare talent is extremely admirable.” The show begins at 8pm at the Old Boys’ Theatre at Christ’s College. It’s been a dream of mine for a while since Adele and Amy Winehouse went there too.” Asti’s farewell concert next Friday Dare to Dream is a “full-on” musical experience filled with a wide range of popular and original songs performed by Asti and her team of back-up dancers. Half of the money raised will go towards musical instruments for Woolston Primary School with the remainder for Asti’s London fund. Asti has been mentoring and tutoring students at the school over the past few months. She has selected seven promising students to perform alongside her during the concert. Port Hills The recent decision to rezone part of the Port Hills red gives us certainty to complete assessments of our customers’ homes. As the programme is worked through and our assessment teams move into the area, they will contact customers to arrange a time to visit and assess their property. Once the assessment is complete, we will provide customers with a detailed outline of the costs to repair or rebuild their home, along with information on settlement options available. This is usually available approximately four to six weeks following the completion of the assessment. TC1, TC2, Hills and Rural With a greater understanding of the land issues in these areas, we are now making good progress on the rebuild and repair of houses. We are progressing work with a focus on the worst affected customers first. TC3 If your property has foundation damage, your house cannot be repaired or rebuilt before all necessary geotechnical testing for your property is completed. We are working with EQC who are leading the geotechnical drilling programme, purchasing data from them to help our customers keep moving forward. These assessments will provide information about the land for foundation design only as part of a building claim. It’s estimated there are around 20,000 houses in TC3 areas that do not have foundation damage, but before we can start work on these properties, we need to know whether they have any land damage. If you have land damage, depending on the severity, we may not be able to begin repair or rebuild work until the land has been repaired. We are working with EQC to ascertain this information. Newly rezoned Green Zone Residents With part of the white zone also recently rezoned green, we can now move to give you more certainty around the rebuild/repair process. Daphne Key Daphne tips: ■ Roots - Daphne is fussy about its Rachel Vogan roots; it hates The Happy Gardener its roots being disturbed, dug around or tickled. Don’t be tempted to plant annuals or bulbs directly under Daphne. ■ Fertiliser - Food is the second area to be aware of. They are fussy feeders and like an ever so slightly acidic soil. Too much nitrogen and they turn up their toes. A light annual application of acid fertiliser once a year after flowering is generally all that is required. ■ Water - They must have a well-drained soil as they hate wet feet. Daphne shrubs are more likely to cope with dry feet not wet, so get the drainage right and you should be okay. ■ Pruning - Only prune after flowering and be careful not to prune back too hard. Hard pruning can cause the plant to sulk.

always know winter is nearing an end once my Daphne leucanthe starts to come into bloom. The heady perfume that wafts around the patio is simply divine. Inside, the fragrance hangs in the air, with the smallest of sprigs adding life even to the coldest of rooms. This year I am feeling rather guilty about the state of my Daphne bush. Last season it took a major hammering, the bush that is, not just from the earthquake and falling chimney, but from my overzealous harvesting and picking. So this season I am paying the price for being so greedy last year; I have fewer flowers to pick because I picked too many last season. My poor plant will probably take a couple of seasons to recover after my overindulgence last winter. To future-proof my needs for the following seasons I am going to combat the problem by planting more Daphne. This seems the most logical thing to do as I prefer to enjoy the plant indoors rather than out. Daphne has long been a much-admired shrub in the home garden and for nine months of the year, I tend to forget all about it, until it begins to flower that is. Then for the next few months, I am drawn to it like a moth to a light bulb at night. The thick heady fragrance indicates that spring isn’t far away and the garden is beginning to awaken after the doom of winter. Daphne can be tricky sometimes if you don’t get a few basics right. They are not a plant renowned for having a long life, 10 to

Basketball administrators looking forward to metro facility Tom Doudney CANTERBURY Basketball is eagerly awaiting more information and a timeline for the metro sports facility proposed as part of the central city blueprint. Canterbury Basketball has been unable to use its traditional Cowles Stadium home in recent seasons because of earthquake damage, and general manager Megan Harlick said having a multi-court facility back in the city would “do great things for basketball”. She was pleased to see the facility listed as one of the city’s key projects and that basketball had been mentioned as one of the sports to be played there. Canterbury Basketball games are currently being played in local gyms around the city, a situation which was not ideal, Ms Harlick said “Until the metro facility is up and running that’s how we’ll operate. Having Cowles Stadium back up and running next season will

certainly change the dynamics again but it’s a council facility that we’ve got to be able to get access into.” However, player numbers had continued to climb, with 80 teams registered at the senior level this season. At school-age level the growth had been “massive”, she said, with 236 teams playing in the Secondary Sports Canterbury competition and approximately 200 teams playing in various primary school competitions. “From a numbers perspective we’re growing year on year, which makes the facility issue quite significant for us,” Ms Harlick said. The success of the Zealand Breakers, who have won back-to-back Australasian National Basketball League competitions, had also contributed to the sport’s rise in popularity by boosting its profile.

Squash tournament aims to attract women MORE than 50 entrants are set to compete in an all-women’s squash tournament, which starts today. The Ladies only R18 Tournament, to be held at the Christchurch Squash Club, has been organised as part of the Year of Women’s Squash 2012 – a nationwide campaign to get women playing the game. Tournament director Chris Cumming said 52

players had registered for the event. “They’ve come from top-graded players right through to those who have hardly held a squash racquet,” she said. It was quite hard to keep younger girls playing the sport, especially with the many sporting options now available to young people. “If they haven’t got the other girls [playing] with them they tend to drop out,” she said.

THERE is absolutely no doubt the New Zealand Olympic rowing squad has captured the nation. As we sat in our lounge and watched the shows, we could only marvel at the achievements of these supremely fit, dedicated and determined New Zealanders. Spare a thought for them and the thousands of hours they spend practising in all winds and weathers with probably their only company, the coach, yelling at them to lift their rates and push themselves to the limit and beyond. Even though they are told the training will reap huge rewards down the track, there must be times when the crews think, “Is this really all worthwhile?” If only the dedication the rowers show could be replicated in other New Zealand sports that receive huge amounts of money and get far more media time than they could ever deserve. In so many other sports, participants believe making New Zealand representation is all they need to do. To me, rowing represents the values other New Zealand sports used to abide by,

when hard work and dedication stayed under the radar, and when the results went their way they knew what they had put in was where the results came from. I’ve been privileged to attend a number of Maadi Cup rowing regattas and have always been impressed. The young people competing show the results of hard work, discipline and super fitness, and the knowledge of how lucky they are to be there. The time, money and commitment parents and schools put into this event represent the ideals we should all strive to replicate in our daily lives. Coming from under the radar into the world spotlight our Olympic rowers appear to have never lost that “feet on the ground” mentality. Stand up, puff your chests out and enjoy the moment, guys – you deserve all the accolades that come your way. And I’m sure when it’s all over you will revert back to being humble achievers, living by the values ingrained in you by those who are in charge of your sport.

The original 123-year-old Te Koraha homestead.

The Prime Minister John Key cuts the ribbon at the official reopening of the 123-year old Te Koraha homestead at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School on Tuesday. He is accompanied by head girl Cara Crawford. The building, which had been extensively restored 10 years ago, was severely damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. Since then the Grade 2 category listed heritage building has been fully renovated and restored to its former glory. Community effort: The Wall of Love mural, which was completed last weekend, has brightened up the empty Jackson’s Café site in New Brighton Mall. The beach mural was painted by Lyn Taylor, Jim Hobby and Sue Davidson with the “love” overlay created by artist Richard (Pops) Baker. Local residents were then invited to add their own personal touches to the artwork.

A NEW Brighton icon who encouraged others to pursue their dreams will be celebrated at a special market in the seaside suburb this weekend. Saturday’s New Brighton Community Market will honour musician and local businessman Pete Heveldt (aka Pete Love and “The Lightman”) who passed away in June. Friend and fellow musician Lynette Diaz said the event would include special performances by a number of Mr Heveldt’s close friends to raise funds to launch the solo CD he was working on at the time of his passing. “Pete was such an important part of the community that we wanted to remember the passion and love he had for New Brighton.

“There was something very special about him because when he walked into a room it would just light up. He was one of those unique, enigmatic characters who always had time to talk to everyone.” Ms Diaz said Mr Heveldt’s musical passion provided a source of inspiration for the development of her own music career. “He really inspired me to get involved in my own music career and his music was very positive and heart-driven.” Mr Heveldt’s spirit was also captured in a new mural on the site of the old Jackson’s Café in New Brighton Mall. New Brighton Project events coordinator Martha Baxendell said while the mural wasn’t

originally designed to coincide with the market she was delighted that it captured Mr Heveldt’s passion for the area. “It’s just what we need in New Brighton, and with the mural finished and the market happening this weekend it all fits together.” The market runs from 9am to 2pm on Saturday. Copies of Merging Landscapes – Songs of Community, which features Mr Heveldt’s song Circle of Friends, will be available to purchase at the market with all proceeds going to the Pete Love Memorial Music Fund. Pre-sale tickets to a fundraising concert at Dux Live on Sunday, August 26, to help complete Mr Heveldt’s CD will also be available.

German architecture delights Holly Gina McKenzie

GETTING a close-up view of Cologne Cathedral’s Gothic spires was a highlight of Avonside Girls’ High School student Holly Yeoman’s recent exchange trip to Germany. The 16-year-old, who has studied German for three years, was one of 120 young New Zealanders who participated in the two-week exchange sponsored by German company Evonik. “My uncle works for the company and told me about the exchange at the start of the year so I was really excited to get chosen,” Holly said. Holly stayed with a host family in Freigericht-Altenmittlau, a small town 40 minutes outside Frankfurt. “I was lucky to be there during the summer holidays so I got to travel with the family. “I loved all the castles and cathedrals and visiting Cologne Cathedral was amazing. “The only thing I got freaked out by was the driving on the motorway where people drive up to 160km/hr.” German food was another highlight for Holly, who enjoyed trying various types of salami and cheese. “The food was yum. It was different having salami, cheese and bread for breakfast and then two hot meals during the day but I really like that type of food, so it was delicious. The family also made me some traditional meals like marinated meat dumplings.” The friendliness of German people impressed Holly as she travelled around the country with her host family.

“My host family were so lovely and then everywhere we went people were really kind and friendly. I was lucky to have a 17-yearold host sister so she took me out to meet her friends.” Holly said she also noticed a definite improvement in her German language skills. “Even though I was only there for two weeks it was great to be surrounded by German all the time and I feel like my speaking has improved.” Holly is now looking forward to welcoming her German host sister for a two-week exchange over the summer holidays. “We’ll show her some of the South Island and definitely take her to the beach to experience a New Zealand summer holiday.”

Space improvement: Windsor School Pukeko Enviro Leaders (PELS) hard at work creating a 160-metre pathway, which is part of their Enviroschools project.

WINDSOR School, in Burwood, is being transformed into a green space thanks to the efforts of the school’s 14 Pukeko Enviro Leaders (PELS). Since joining the Enviroschools programme earlier this year the students have focused on making their school more attractive and ecofriendly. The group carried out a school-wide survey, which identified the back field play area as a space requiring improvement. PELS member Alice Thompson said they decided to create a “fun and interesting space for students”. “Everyone said it was boring, muddy and slippery so we wanted to plant lots of trees and have a path winding along the field.” Bottle Lake Forest ranger Warren Hunt helped the students create a blueprint for a 160-metre path that spans the school’s back fence. “He was really helpful and showed us how we could make a difference by being creative and environmentally friendly.” The students hope to have the path completed by the end of the term.

Young environmentalists to explore Kermadecs Preparation: Getting ready for the trip of a lifetime, students snorkel during the pre-expedition camp.

TWO students from the nor-west area are among the 30 Young Blake explorers who departed yesterday for the Kermadec Islands on the inaugural Sir Peter Blake Trust Young Blake Expedition. Along with a 26-strong crew of scientists, journalists, educators and other leaders, the students will travel on the Royal New Zealand Navy’s HMNZS Canterbury. The voyage is from Auckland to the remote, largely uninhabited islands 800 to 1000 km north-east of the North Island. Lucy Tothill, 16, of St Margaret’s College and Alexander Gregory, 16, of Christ’s College will have the opportunity to observe the unique flora and fauna of the country’s infrequently visited northernmost outpost. They will help with scientific activities like shark-tagging, dolphin DNA sampling and foliage collection research. In a pre-expedition blog post, Miss Tothill wrote: “I’ve never been on a ship like the Canterbury, I’ve never been somewhere as fragile and beautiful as the islands and I’ve never been swimming with sharks. Poets captivate at high school verse contest Chelsea Shover HIGH school students took the stage in a performance poetry competition last week at University of Canterbury. Bound only by a four-minute time limit and their own imaginations, students stepped up with original poetry representing a wide range of styles. From more traditional, structured rhyming poetry to free-form pieces, most of the entries drew on personal experiences. Between acts, MCs TK Kohinga Harris and Emma Robertson from Aranui High School performed poems. At the end of the night, judges delivered their verdicts to an audience of about 100. Judges were performance poet and writer David Eggleton; poet, performer and children’s book writer Tusiata Avia and English in Aotearoa editor Steve Langley. Rebecca Hawkes of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School won the senior section. Hamish Peterson of St Andrew’s

College was the senior section runner-up. Moana Thompson of Aranui High School won the junior section. Runner-up in the junior section was Meg Doughty of Burnside High School. The following students were highly commended: TK Kohinga Harris of Aranui High School, Alysha Salisbury of Aranui High School, and John Anderson of Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti. Gareth Morgan brings ‘mouse’ campaign to Christchurch Chelsea Shover GARETH Morgan, the businessman and adventurer behind the Million Dollar Mouse campaign, will speak at Burnside High School next Tuesday as part of a national tour. His talk will focus on the Our Far South expedition, an exploration he led last February through the subantarctic islands, the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. He will share stories from the trip and discuss issues facing the region. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Million Dollar Mouse appeal to eradicate mice from the Antipodes Islands. On the islands 800 km south of Bluff, mice – human-introduced pests – are damaging the

native populations of seabirds, insects and plants. The only home for the Antipodes Island snipe and the Antipodes Island parakeet, the islands are also a breeding location and rest stop for other seabirds. Mice eat the birds’ eggs and chicks, as well as insects and seeds that supply food for native species. Mr Morgan and his wife Jo are matching public contributions to the appeal. According to the campaign’s website, the total amount raised to date, including the Morgans’ contribution, is just over $500,000. Mr Morgan will speak at 6pm at the Aurora Centre. Tickets are $20.

Poems set to music at Harewood School Chelsea Shover

TOMORROW afternoon, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s (CSO) week-long residency at Harewood School will conclude with a concert showcasing the fruits of workshops, lessons and poetry set to music. Six CSO musicians have spent the week presenting workshops and lessons to students of all ages, from the musically trained to those who had never before picked up an instrument. Workshop topics ranged from storytelling through music for the youngest students to body percussion dance for senior pupils. An instrumental ensemble brought children of all musical experience together to play recorders, guitars, xylophones and pianos. Deputy principal Julie Argyle said 100 of the school’s 180 pupils participated in the CSO

programming. Some auditioned for the choir, others were students with musical training and others volunteered. Two poets from the school’s Enhancement Writing Group, Beck Bates and Kezia Milne, were selected through a competition to have their words set to music. Guitarist and singer Brooke Singer and pianist Hamish Oliver will collaborate with Kezia and Beck to compose a school song. Both students’ works were chosen based on their reflection of enthusiasm for the school. Beck’s poem praised the school’s proximity to the airport, cooperation between older and younger pupils and the swimming pool. Kezia called Harewood “more beautiful than anything I know”, evoking the native bush and vegetable garden.

Olympic opportunity too good to pass up Chelsea Shover

YOU don’t necessarily have to be a worldclass athlete to participate in the Olympics, as a young woman from Ilam discovered. During a year overseas, Laura Muir, 24, performed in the Games’ opening ceremony as a drummer and marshal. After drumming in the Pandemonium sequence, Ms Muir changed and returned as a marshal for the athlete’s parade. She will also marshal in the closing ceremony. The Pandemonium sequence had the 1000 performers transforming the stadium into the Industrial Revolution, complete with blowup chimneys, sparks and fireworks evoking molten steel. Ms Muir wrote in an email that near the end of 2011, she happened upon a link to apply to be a volunteer performer.

“I never even considered it was something I’d be able to be involved in without being an incredible dancer, singer or musician,” she wrote. “It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up!” Once chosen, she rehearsed for two months, about 140 hours in total. After all those long practices in a particularly wet England summer, she has also had time to soak up the atmosphere and attend a few Olympic events. Some of the highlights of Ms Muir’s overall “amazing experience” were seeing the New Zealand team pass while she was marshalling and watching a rowing event. She will get to keep her drum and costume, along with a signed certificate from Danny Boyle, the opening ceremony’s artistic director.

THE Christchurch (Fendalton) Combined Probus club, the oldest Probus club in the South Island, celebrated its 30th anniversary on July 4. The event had to be postponed a month because of extreme weather on June 6. Over 70 people attended and a special welcome was extended to the guests by one of the club’s earliest presidents, Derek Warren. Current president Ross Gurney paid tribute to former senior officers and an audio-visual presentation based on ‘What a Wonderful World’ entitled ‘Remembering’ evoked the memories of people and events in the 30 years of the club’s existence. Another former president, Shailer Weston, acknowledged the founding members of the club, six of whom still remain. An interesting insight into the origins of Probus Clubs in the 1960s was provided by Alan Paisey, while another former president, Des Boyle, set in context the significant change of the club in 2010 from a men-only club to a combined membership and the recruitment of its first women members. School replants front garden after roadworks FOR the past three months, Fletcher Construction, part of SCIRT, has dug up streets and replaced pipes on Rutland Street, completely closing parts of it to through traffic and closing St Albans Catholic School’s main gate. The garden in front of St Albans was a casualty of the construction, having been removed to make room for safety fencing and machinery. St Albans principal Annette Sjoberg said the work affected the school community, but SCIRT provided great support. The construction team even taught lessons at the school about what they were doing. “They were very much part of informing the school community about what was happening,” Mrs Sjoberg said. Recently, Fletcher team members returned to the school to help students replant the garden with native plants. Once the crew finished the stretch from Innes Road to Westminster St, they moved to the northern segment to replace the wastewater main and lateral pipes to property boundaries. This work is expected to take another three months. Traffic is running freely through the intersection of Rutland and Malvern streets near the school, making the local businesses more accessible. Club, introduced the commemorative book written by Alan Paisey and published by Toltech Publishing. The book provides a valuable record of historic and recent events, as well as interesting comparisons between earliest members and those currently in membership. James Barker, Karel Adriaens and Brian Johnston, all former presidents, also contributed to the occasion. Wastewater projects starting in St Albans SCIRT is undertaking two projects in St Albans to repair wastewater systems and equip them to better withstand any future earthquakes and changed ground conditions. From mid-August, crews will begin on Papanui Road, starting at the Innes Rd end and working back to Mays Rd. This work is expected to span 11 months. Multiple crews will be working simultaneously to finish Papanui Rd and its feeder streets. Mays, Normans, Innes and Weston roads and Chapter and Knowles streets will be closed to through traffic in sections. There will be extensive traffic management in this area that surrounds several schools. SCIRT will replace not only the gravity wastewater main in the road area, but also the laterals or side pipes to household property boundaries. The second project, east of Papanui Rd, will take place mostly north of Innes Rd and east of Rutland St. It is expected to last about 18 months. Work has started on Knowles St and Weston Rd, between Rutland St and close to Cranford St. The larger package of work will also include Somme St and Hawkesbury, Roosevelt, Jameson, Nancy and Kensington avenues. McFaddens and Croziers roads and Esperance St frame the northern edge. Householders will receive work notices advising them of starting times (yet to be decided for each of the six work segments) and issues related to driveway access or traffic management.
