Let’s get the eastern arsonists Gina McKenzie
COMMUNITY action could help solve a spate of eastern suburbs arson attacks, according to Fire Service Christchurch area commander Jon Graham. The series of arson attacks over the past three weekends razed the landmark 52-year-old Leander Building at Kerrs Reach in Avonside Drive and damaged Aranui High School, Avondale Primary and Aranui Kids First Kindergarten. The attacks stepped up a notch at the weekend with seven fires lit in the early hours of Saturday morning in Aldershot and Portsmouth streets and Ben Rarere Avenue in Aranui. Four of the fires were lit at properties and at
two of the properties people were asleep inside their houses at the time. The residents escaped uninjured but the escalation in the arson attacks had alarmed Mr Graham. “We’re very concerned that these attacks are creeping into properties while residents are asleep. “It’s gone too far and needs to be stopped.” Mr Graham hoped Wainoni and Avonside residents would be able to provide further information. “People are our eyes and ears and even a small detail such as seeing an unfamiliar person in their street could provide a breakthrough.

“Something that seems insignificant be very important so I would encourage people in the area to report anything suspicious.” Overgrown vegetation and abandoned houses in the eastern suburbs provided fuel for arson attacks and Mr Graham said residents needed to monitor vegetation growth. “People need to be aware that even if they don’t live in their house anymore if they still own the property they are responsible for keeping vegetation under control. “If the property is owned by Cera then the council will take care of the vegetation.” Mr Graham said the fire service still had a very active presence in the eastern suburbs,
even in those areas with large sections of empty houses. “If someone calls the fire service we will aim to be there within six minutes so we are still very much a part of eastern Christchurch.” Mr Graham said the fire service was still carrying out an ongoing investigation into the arson attacks in conjunction with the police. “We are analysing the scenes of the fires and the results will contribute to the investigation.” If anyone has any information regarding the arson attacks or has noticed any suspicious activity in the Wainoni, Aranui or Avonside areas please contact the Christchurch central police on 363 7400.

“Coming from the east, where do you go in Christchurch? Hornby would have been seen as being an affordable option for those people and that’s fast becoming unrealistic.” One Hei Hei resident, Kylie Fraser, told Mainland Press last week that her family of five, including two children, had been living in a cold, damp caravan for the last six months after having to leave their previous rental property and being unable to find another place despite viewing more than 50 houses. “The places that we have been to look at, there have been lines down the street - you’re sort of getting about 50 applicants to each house and whoever offers the highest gets the place. If you can’t afford to offer more than what it is advertised for you pretty much don’t have a chance.” The family had applied to Housing New Zealand for a house but had been deemed second level priority. Last Friday, the day after Ms Woods raised their case in parliament, the family was accepted for a Housing New Zealand property in Bryndwr, which they moved into on Saturday. Earthquake recovery minister Gerry Brownlee stated in June that rent rises in Christchurch were not “astronomical” and the Government was focused on increasing the city’s rental housing stock to address the situation.

A MEMBER of Parliament, church leaders, community workers and school principals have joined forces to tackle a ‘housing crisis’ in the Western suburbs. Labour Wigram MP Megan Woods convened a meeting with the groups to create an action plan for identifying and working with families living with unhealthy and overcrowded living conditions in and around the suburbs of Riccarton, Sockburn, Hornby and Hei Hei. Ms Woods said people moving into these relatively undamaged suburbs were pushing up rents to levels that were unaffordable for locals with already stretched budgets. “In the Hornby area a house that was going for $280 per week this time last year is now more like $360 per week.” Ms Woods said she was concerned that the situation was forcing children to move schools, breaking down extended family support networks and eroding established communities. “These communities are not being destroyed by a natural disaster but by the Government’s refusal to recognise this crisis,” she said. Hornby Presbyterian Community Church associate pastor Hamish Galloway said his church had conducted a door knocking service in February, visiting around 2500 homes in the area, and found a significant number of people had moved into the area from the eastern suburbs.

Family follow Eve’s Blind bus users demand action rise to Olympics
3
Gina McKenzie
Set to shine: Eve Macfarlane is following an Olympic dream.
BLIND and visually impaired bus passengers say John Newman’s experience of being left behind by buses or discriminated against is common and they are demanding action. The Christchurch branch of the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind is meeting with Environment Canterbury (ECan) tomorrow to discuss issues related to hailing buses, discrimination and the new draft transport plan. Following last week’s article in Mainland Press, Mr Newman was contacted by a number of blind and visually impaired Christchurch residents who had negative bus experiences. “People have been abused by bus drivers and when they explain their sight issues the driver has said ‘well I won’t pick you up next time unless you flag down the bus’.” Sue Barnes, who is blind and relies on a guide dog, said she was distressed when a driver tried to order her guide dog off a bus. “He kept repeating that no dogs were allowed on the bus. “Other passengers told him the dog could stay but even after calling the bus company to check he still didn’t sound sure.” Ms Barnes said while most bus drivers were professional she had also been left behind by buses as she couldn’t flag them down. “A bus went right past me although I was an elbow’s length from the kerb. “I complained to Red Bus and they said the driver thought I was crossing the road but I was right at the stop with my dog.”
Morgan’s Vineyard Cafe Family affair: Eve Macfarlane’s father Charlie, mother Jo and sister Liv will be cheering her on in London.
Tom Doudney
AS a child, Eve Macfarlane’s mother always thought her natural sporting ability would take her a bit further than some of her peers. Now, at just 19 years of age, that natural ability has taken Eve all the way to the Olympic Games in London – and the rest of the family aren’t far behind. Charlie and Jo Macfarlane left their Parnassus farm on Tuesday to watch daughter Eve compete as part of New Zealand’s quadruple sculls team. Their other daughter, Liv, left with them and will join them as Olympic spectators at the start of her OE. Eve is the youngest member of the New Zealand rowing squad and one of our youngest athletes at the games. She will also be among the youngest in the entire Olympic regatta. Although she only took up rowing in year 12 at Rangi Ruru, her rise since then has been meteoric, winning five gold medals in her first Maadi Cup, being selected for the New Zealand junior rowing squad and then skipping
the Under 23 side to go straight into the elite squad. Last month she was named Canterbury Oarswoman of the year for the second year running. Jo said travelling to London to watch Eve at the Olympics was something the family members felt they couldn’t miss. “It’s quite scary and daunting for us in a way just because she is quite young but she seems to be coping really well and she doesn’t actually know anything else because she has gone into it so quickly so she doesn’t know another life yet.” Charlie said his daughter’s rapid rise all the way to the top had been a bit of a surprise but she had always been “quietly determined”. “She can have a bit of fun when she wants to but she is pretty damn focused,” he said. “Not many people are lucky enough to get the chance to perhaps follow a young daughter [to the Olympics] and I think you have to make the sacrifice to go.”
delightful

Red Bus chief executive officer Paul McNoe said drivers knew guide dogs were allowed on buses. “It’s very clear and it always has been our policy.” He added the request to flag down buses came from ECan, not Red Bus. However, ECan manager of passenger services David Stenhouse said while stickers asking passengers to hail buses had been placed on bus stops five years ago, it had never been an official policy. “If people are obviously waiting for a bus the driver should stop regardless of whether they hail the bus.” The concept of flagging down buses had been introduced because it was taking too long to get around bus routes and drivers were stopping at bus stops with no passengers. Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind orientation and mobility instructor Corina Duke said bus driver training was part of the problem. “We used to do more training with them but they now have their own internal training programmes. “We have had complaints of bus drivers being very grumpy, rude and unhelpful and some bus drivers just drive off rather than wait.” Ms Duke said various solutions would be explored at tomorrow’s meeting including cards with bus numbers and other visual aids. “It’s not about them and us but about working together to come up with the best solution possible.”

Up against the very best, our kiwi champions will mix with our heroes and villains and take us to incredible highs and to despair in failure - our expectations totally out of proportion with the prize that is the gold medal. At the same time we will all become the TMO as we scrutinise every performance, become the greatest arm chair critics and then whinge when performances aren’t up to what we are told we should expect. No one is going there to fail. They are the best that we have and on any given day they should be prepared to deliver on their own

Many of these athletes are still amateurs and have to work, as well as train, and fundraise in some cases. So the stage is set, and the world is watching. I for one am glad that the Central City Development Unit is leaving its announcement of its 100 day plan until Monday. It is our own 20 year hurdle race and we definitely need to see the blueprint for our future city. It should have its own greatness and hopefully a gold medal. But let’s just lose ourselves in the fanfare and spectacular drama that unfolds on the greatest sporting arena in the world as the 2012 Olympics begin.

Centenary piece: A commemorative knife from Wood Brothers Ltd. Photo: Colin Howie
I received a newspaper cutting yesterday from a family member about the developments in Addington. The email included an article called “All go for Addington” [Mainland Press, July 12]. I was a staff member of Wood Brothers Ltd for 10 years, from 1960 to 1970. I want to point out some errors contained in the article. I include the attachment showing the knife which was produced for the centenary of Wood Brothers Ltd. If you look carefully you will see the dates 1856 to 1956 embossed on the panel. I think the statement “The buildings at 14 Wise Street were established by the Woods Brothers in 1890” tends to be ambiguous. It seems to imply to me that Wood Brothers commenced their operations in 1890. The Wood brothers commenced milling using a windmill on the Avon River and afterwards moved to Addington. More importantly, the company name has been misspelt. The family name is Wood, not

IT is becoming increasingly apparent that I am not alone in my belief that we should continue with the deconstruction of our cathedral and turn our attention to shaping a vision for the revitalisation of the square. In my view, the cathedral should be replaced by an inspiring new building that will reflect the spirit of our times, redefine the centre of our city and set the tone for a truly 21st century rebuild. If you share this view and wish to judge for yourself if my concept for such a building may fit this bill, then check the poster outlining my design, on the Worcester St. Bridge cordon fence. Details can also be found on the new “ministry of awesome” website. The purpose of writing this letter is to inform the wider public of the existence of this building design concept, as the mainstream media seem reluctant to do so and to encourage others to develop similar visions.

Visions of Christchurch The life draw on water of Brian Chelsea Shover reports on some of the ideas put forward for inclusion in the redevelopment plan for our central city.
The Garden City: A privately submitted illustration shows the future of Christchurch as Versailles with a lake.
The CERA 100-day plan for our city is now a 103-day plan, with no official explanation for the delay, although it is thought to be to enable Cabinet to approve the proposal next week, at ministers’ regular Monday meeting. As everyone waits to see what Central Development Unit director Warwick Isaacs unveils, it’s worth revisiting the ideas that may prove components of or compatible with the official plan. From the suggestion to turn the whole Central Business District into a lake, to proposals enhancing natural wetlands, a number of the plans look to the city’s waterways for revitalisation. In addition to fostering a wildlife habitat and creating a monument to those who lost their lives and homes in the quakes, the Avon-Otakaro Network would turn the most liquefacton-prone land into a public space. This plan proposes turning the red-zoned residential area around the Avon-Otakaro River into a park reserve. The group submitted a proposal to Parliament on May 2. Recovery visions also sought to reinvigorate the local economy in red-zoned areas. Christchurch East MP Lianne Dalziel submitted a plan at the City Council’s public hearing on June 8 outlining several aquatic options to rejuvenate the eastern suburbs. “The largest natural wetlands within a city boundary based on Travis and stretching through the red zones – perhaps the Horseshoe Lake,” Ms Dalziel wrote, “could provide ecotourism and educational opportunities. “A rowing lake and an additional lake, possibly surrounded by a running track, could increase water-adjacent property value.” Ms Dalziel also suggested an aquatic theme park could turn the ward into the city’s playground. Proponents of building lakes touted benefits to tourism, recreation, aesthetics and property value. However, there are environmental consequences to consider when creating artificial lakes, and boosting a community’s real estate value with waterfront homes could prove fraught with
complications. Professor Tim Davies at the University of Canterbury explained via email that land next to the lake could become more vulnerable to lateral spreading. Combined with wave erosion, this could make lakefront property a risky proposition. Property investor Sir Robert “Bob” Jones’ dramatic suggestion could skirt this problem, despite introducing new concerns. Mr Jones took the watery plans to the furthest extreme in a May Listener article, suggesting building “a massive irregular-shaped lake with bays and inlets on the destroyed CBD land”. The plan pictured above was sent to Mainland Press by someone who wished for his name to be withheld so his personal identity would not be conflated with the ideas. A synthesis of already-suggested ideas, it imagined the city centre as a Versailles-esque network of gardens. The gardens could be a temporary or long-term fixture in the CBD, depending on the feasibility and timeline of a rebuild, the suggester said. In his Listener article, Mr Jones floated a similar garden alternative to his lake suggestion. The illustrated plan also includes widening the Avon River into an large artificial lake covering the red zone, and building a canal system closer to the city centre. Widening the river in its tidal zone, Professor Davies wrote, would affect tides upstream and possibly downstream. It could also alter sediment deposition in the river’s mouth, which could mean that sediment would have to be periodically removed to maintain the lake’s depth. Professor Davies also mentioned that a lake could reduce upstream flooding if the river flooded on a rising spring tide and would likely provide a new habitat for water-related fauna, for better or worse. Whether or not elements of any of these plans make it into Monday’s announcement, the range of ideas suggested so far spoke to the complex potential of Christchurch’s waterways in recovery efforts.

CTV building info disposed of Gracie Fea THE Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission of Inquiry into the CTV building was put on hold last Tuesday, after Commissioner Sir Jon Carter became ill. Before that, Dr Alan Reay, whose company Alan Reay Consultants Limited designed the CTV building, gave evidence. Dr Raey put in only three and a half hours in the CTV building project, while David Harding, who had little experience with multi-storey buildings and no experience with the computer modelling system used to test seismic resistance, put in more than 300 hours. Mr Harding was expected to give evidence yesterday. Of particular interest to the commission were the timesheets showing how much work Dr Reay put into the CTV building. He claims Mr Harding had substantial experience and could practise on his own. The company disposed of a disk containing information relating to the CTV building after February 2011. They transferred all their files to computer disks before the February earthquake. However, the disks became a “shambles” after the earthquake so the information was transferred to hard drive. That wasn’t the only filing problem the company experienced and consequently it could not provide all the information on the CTV
building to the commission. Some files had become mouldy from a leak in the roof, others had sections missing and had been removed, but not returned. Dr Reay said the company’s file retention was for the IRD and they had no reason to retain job files. Dr Reay was also “dissatisfied” with a Department of Building and Housing report on why the building collapsed in the February quake. He wanted a reduced scale model of the CTV building tested on a shake table. He hadn’t considered the cost but it would be several million dollars. He had never inspected the CTV building but said it suffered diminished capacity after the September and ongoing earthquakes. The Department of Building and Housing report should have considered this along with four other scenarios he put forward, one being vertical acceleration, he said. Counsel assisting the victims’ families, Marcus Elliot, said other buildings were also subject to vertical acceleration but unlike those buildings, CTV pancaked, with all floors collapsing on top of each other. Dr Reay agreed the CTV building was “probably” the only one that collapsed exactly “in that manner”.

New lease of life for damaged books Christine de Felice
OLD children’s storybooks, old cookbooks passed down through the ages and 19th century bibles are some examples of the books McHargs Book Binders and Print Finishers are asked to repair. “We don’t know if all of them are earthquake damaged but probably 70 percent of those coming through the door would be, and we think there would be a lot more out there,” manager Johnny McHarg said. The majority of books brought in were bibles, though law journals were also brought in for repair. The company would probably get more of these when law firms unpacked boxes that had been put in storage after the earthquakes, Mr McHarg said. “We also do a lot of work for the University of Canterbury,” he said. About 30 to 40 books were repaired each week. Repair work included mending broken spines, replacing end papers and repairing covers. McHargs was established in 1893. Johnny, who is a fourth-generation member of the family-based business, said the company had always been located around the central city eye: Qualified book binder Simon Ohlson area. It has been in its present premises on St Expert checks on the damage to a bible dating back to Asaph Street for about 10 years. the 1860s.

Bus system changes positive, ECan says Tom Doudney
ENVIRONMENT Canterbury (ECan) says proposed changes to Christchurch bus services will be an improvement for Christchurch users. The draft Regional Public Transport Plan is out for public consultation until August 3. It will proceed to hearings in August before a final plan is due in September. ECan passenger services manager David Stenhouse said bus passenger numbers were down to 70 percent of pre-earthquake levels. The proposed changes would provide greater efficiencies and better cater to the post-earthquake distribution of employment centres. “They’re reducing duplication, so [for example] at the moment we have nine different services running down Main North Rd, coming down the corridor into town, we’re going to end up through this hub and spoke model with just one running at high frequency.” The “hub and spoke model” will see a number of suburban interchanges created and less different bus routes coming through the central city interchange, Mr Stenhouse said Mr Stenhouse said the changes would not
David Stenhouse
be incompatible with people coming back into the CBD as it was rebuilt or with a potential light rail network mooted by the Christchurch City Council. ECan was working with the city council on a study into the feasibility of light rail. “For us it’s a demand-driven argument. In 30 years’ time, will the city be big enough to make that economically viable to have light rail or will it not?”

Rebuilt shops not accessible for disabled Samantha Early
THE international symbol for access is on the entrance, indicating the new wheelchair-friendly toilets inside a recently rebuilt block of shops in Merivale. But those in wheelchairs wouldn’t use them because they’d struggle to get in the door – and the building owners and Christchurch City Council are at odds over who’s responsible for fixing it. CCS Disability Action regional facilities manager BJ Clark said the footpath in front of the shops, which included a chemist, boutique and travel agent, sloped downwards towards the road at more than three times the ratio it should and the thresholds at the doorways, which should be a maximum height of 20 millimetres, varied between 30 and 40 mm, which made it hazardous to access for wheelchair users. Merivale resident Hine Moke, who has used a wheelchair since she was 16, instead uses the pharmacy across the road – it’s the only one locally she can get in to. The two owners, who have different parts of the building, said it was their understanding the council would re-level the footpath, which would go a long way towards solving the access problems. Joanna Beadle, who managed the rebuild of the earthquake damaged shops on behalf of her mother, building owner Judith Hadfield, said the council signed off the building consent and the footpath was council land. “It’s up to them to set it right according to their own standards.” The owners said the builders tried their best to bring the footpath as level as they could but the end result was the council would put it right and compliance was issued on that premise. She said they did not want to miss out on the custom of wheelchair users. Brian Smith, who owns one of the units, said they couldn’t hold off on reopening the building until the footpath was fixed because there was no telling how long that would take. “Why keep it closed for another six weeks for that one person in 1000,” he said. Christchurch city council earthquake consenting
department manager Aaron Haymes said he fully appreciated what the access issues were. Mr Haymes said the responsibility for the works definitely rested with the building owners and he was working hard to put the situation right. “All of that paving is going to be re-laid when the [next door] corner site [still under construction] is done,” he said. Mr Haymes said the council was very focused on making sure they had an accessible city. He said compliance was issued despite it not meeting the building rules because they didn’t want to stop the business owners from occupying “based on that small defect” on the understanding it was only a matter of time before it was fixed.

Youth Market to open in City Centre WHEN Lou Langrish returned to Christchurch after a few years of working at mountain resorts and volunteering at a Costa Rican animal sanctuary, she tried to sell some of her things at a market. She had to undersell her things to meet the site fee, but the experience inspired her to build a better market. Ms Langrish talked to Dr Sue Bagshaw of the Youth Health Centre, who suggested making stalls free for people under 25, and a vision was born. After months of preparation, the Christchurch Youth Market will open for business on August 11. The market will be outdoors, rain or fine, on Saturdays from noon to 3pm at the Youth Hub on Barbadoes St. Space is free for those under 25. Children under 14 must be accompanied by a guardian. Prospective sellers 25 and older – “We are all young at heart,” Ms Langrish says – pay $10 to $20 according to how much space they need. Stallholders can sell regularly or casually. The market has been accepting applications since the end of June. Ms Langrish said
Lyttelton sea scouts to compete in US TWO Lyttelton sea scouts have a second opportunity to take top place in an international competition after coming close to winning two years ago. Amanda Norris, 16, and Michael Anderson, 18, are representing New Zealand at the biennial Koch Cup in the United States. Scouts NZ national water activities adviser Roger Horton said the pair were exceptional sailors. “The skill and talent in these two young
people is extraordinary,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw them winning medals at the Olympic Games in the future or sailing in the America’s Cup.” This is in fact the sixth year New Zealand Sea Scouts have competed in the Koch Cup – coming second each time. Horton said maybe this was the year to be number one. “Amanda and Michael came second last year and now they have another opportunity to show they are the best in the world,” he said.

T’Nealle Joie will sell stationary, homemade dresses and other creations. The musical lineup includes teens Cameron Champion and Max Earnshaw, who perform under the name ‘I Gave These Guys Five Bucks,’ winners of 2012’s Telecom Be a Busker competition for best young buskers. Scheez, a band made of Cobham Intermediate students, features a cornet, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, guitar and more. The market received a $3000 grant from Creative Communities for startup costs. The market’s opening day will also celebrate the reopening of Dr Bagshaw’s free Youth Health Centre, now the 298 Youth Health Centre. The first Saturday will feature a raffle and giveaways.

CDC back in the city THE Canterbury Development Corporation’s (CDC) new central city offices were due to be officially opened by Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker yesterday. The move into the Cashel Mall office was a “logical next step for the organisation and sent a powerful message to the wider community, the corporation’s CEO, Tom Hooper, said. “The more businesses that commit to coming back, the more confidence others will have in investing, returning, relocating or simply visiting the CBD. As a local government agency, it’s important for CDC to show commitment to re-establishing and helping to rebuild and repopulate a CBD which was – and will again be – the engine room of our economy. Throughout the recovery phase, CDC staff had been working closely with the Christchurch City Council and the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority on plans to reinstate the central city. The new site will ensure staff are “right in amongst it during the rebuild of the CBD, Mr Hooper said. “Moving back into the CBD will allow for greater collaboration and ensure staff are at the coal face of the central city rebuild. Since the loss of their former Union House premises in the February earthquake, CDC staff have been working out of a converted warehouse in Addington. Two years and 12 tonnes of cash celebrated A UNIQUE Lions clubs project that takes unwanted currency and turns it into life changing experiences for children celebrated its second birthday this month. For the past two years, Lions clubs across New Zealand have collected more than 12 tonnes of old money and foreign currency as part of the Heads Up for Kids campaign. Although unwanted, the magic of this collection has turned the old New Zealand cash and foreign currency into something very valuable - funding for education programmes such as Spirit of Adventure, Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre and Outward Bound. Dozens of young New Zealanders from all corners of the country have benefited from the funds raised. Last month 10 students were awarded Heads Up for Kids scholarships after being nominated by their teachers and peers for their positive attitudes towards their school environment and community. Christchurch Lions Club member Gillian Stewart said youth are our most precious asset and we need to support them. “It’s important our young people are recognised and given opportunities that boost their confidence and provide a springboard for them to grow into great New Zealanders of the future.” So far, 2.3 million coins with a total value of more than $320,000, which had been dug out of gardens, found down the back of chairs and stashed away from holidays past, have been donated since the campaign was launched on July 10, 2010.
Something different: Gillian Stewart of Christchurch, Lions Clubs District 202E (from top of South Island to Christchurch) with a collection of coins from Christchurch Telecom offices.
With the help of Resene paints and New World supermarkets, the money has been collected and the hefty donations transported by Fastway Couriers to various destinations, such as the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, where it is redeemed for legal tender. Old money and foreign currency can be taken to any Resene ColorShop or call 0800 Old Money for a Lions Club member to collect.

OVER 600 TC3-zoned residents sick of “living in limbo” have joined forces via Facebook and will hold a series of rallies to ensure their voices are heard. The first rally will coincide with the release of the Central City Development Unit (CCDU) rebuild blueprint next week while a second march is planned for early August. TC3 residents Facebook group organiser Kiri Hider said the group was created to highlight the invisibility and inaction those in the blue-green zone were facing on a daily basis. “Many of us just feel really alone and like we don’t matter. “The lack of action is extremely concerning and we needed to join together to make sure our concerns are listened to.” Mrs Hider said while the earthquakes had been terrible, the current situation for TC3-zoned residents was even worse. “Insurance companies won’t even engage with you if you’re TC3. “Sometimes it feels like you don’t even exist because you are right at the back of the queue.” Mrs Hider said when her Lake Terrace Road property was classified green she initially felt excited about rebuilding and giving her family a fresh start. “We have really struggled to recover because we can’t provide a safe haven for our children. “It’s got to the point where it’s like being a second-class citizen especially now when you hear that it could take up to eight years to get started on rebuilding. “My children will be grown up by then and will have spent their teenage years shuffling from rental to rental.”
She said the TC ratings had unfairly stigmatised those in the TC3 category. “They were put in to give confidence to reinsurers but there was no consideration given to how these ratings would affect those in the community and lower property values. “You are treated completely differently when you are in the TC3 category and it feels like no one cares about what happens to you.” Mrs Hider said her group wanted certainty around rebuilding timelines and engagement with insurance companies. “Everyone just wants some certainty so we can plan our future and move on.”
Feeling ignored: TC3 residents Facebook coordinator Kiri Hider says property owners in the blue-green zone have been left “in the dark”. She is pictured at her TC3-zoned home in Burwood which came off its foundation and sheared in half following last February’s earthquake.

On site: Fonterra chairman Henry van de Heyden, chief executive Theo Spierings and Canterbury operations manager Richard Gray at a visit to the new Darfield plant in June.
THE new 60-strong team at Fonterra Darfield are into their final few weeks of trials before the first milk arrives. Fonterra Canterbury Operations Manager Richard Gray said more than 1500 people had been involved in getting the new factory up and running and the site was as tribute to their hard work. “Safety and quality are our top priorities and, with all the team on board, our focus is on testing the new plant’s processes with water.” New members of the team have been familiarising themselves with the systems by visiting four of the co-op’s 26 sites around the country, including Te Rapa and Whareroa in the North Island and Clandeboye and
Edendale in the South Island. Mr Gray said there was a high demand for roles at the new site, both from locals and from people outside the area. “We’ve had a great response from locals, with three quarters of the jobs going to people from the Canterbury region.” Fifty more positions will be added in 2013 when the site’s second drier comes on line. When both driers are fully operational the site will process up to 6.6 million litres of milk. “This will further optimise Fonterra’s production and product mix for New Zealand milk, which is an important platform for our strategy,” Mr Gray said.

Samantha Early TURNING 18 is a milestone for anyone, but it’s extra special for community watch patrols in greater Christchurch. The community watch cars gathered outside Pioneer Stadium in Spreydon last Wednesday to celebrate that after almost 18 years, the voluntary crime patrols now cover the whole Canterbury region. They act as extra sets of eyes and ears for the police, reporting suspicious behaviour. City Parks Community Watch member John Bird said he wanted to help start up patrols in Christchurch after an experience in the back of a police car. “I was a passenger, not a villain! We were going down Manchester Street, something happened in Colombo St and in those days you could hear everything that was going on on all radios and the boys turned around and said ‘no we didn’t see anything. Do you think we can see through brick walls?’” Mr Bird said. He had everything organised – they just
needed a car, so he put a notice in a local anything we can do to support the police is newspaper, which was picked up by AMI fantastic,” she said. Constable Stef Harris said they often Insurance’s Sydenham branch manager saved police time. Eric McKenzie. “If they see a suspected drunk driver Mr McKenzie arranged for a vehicle to be donated and also spent time volunteering they will let us know where they are, the direction of travel and we will be able to himself. Mr Bird said he was overjoyed with stop the person, and they’ve been dead on the support the patrols had from local the money quite often.” Community Watch is looking for new sponsors, volunteers and the police over the year and he couldn’t express his thanks members of all ages and Mr Bird said those interested could contact Constable enough. Community Watch Hornby member Harris through the main police number, and Canterbury district representative for 363 7400. the Combined Patrols of New Zealand Ann Smith said Christchurch city now had six patrols and the Canterbury area from Hanmer to Twizel had 16 patrols, many with several CITYWIDE Ray White New Zealand Property Manager of the Year 2011 cars each. “We are the eyes and More properties urgently needed ears of the community and Ph 331 6755

Commercial rental crisis creative solution Gina McKenzie
SPIRALLING commercial rental rates of over $4000 per week have forced Baz Hailes to set up an open- air shop after his New Brighton store was destroyed in an arson attack. Post-earthquake rent hikes had seen Mr Hailes lose nine of his 12 Canterbury Charity Barn stores, which sell low-priced recycled goods. He was shocked by the cost of commercial rentals during his five-week search for replacement premises. “I looked at warehouses in Gasson Street and Brougham Street that were from $2000 to $4000 per week, which is much more than a business like mine can afford. Everything I saw was completely out of my reach.” Mr Hailes settled for a “less than ideal” 2000-square-metre section on the corner of Ferry and Ensors roads for just over $500 per week, which he had transformed into an openair market. “We were forced to set up here in this empty space because it was all we could afford. “It’s down to survival mode when rents get
this high for businesses like mine who don’t generate a high turnover.” Mr Hailes had installed six glasshouses to protect his goods from the elements. “It’s not perfect, and with all the rain things have been getting wet but it’s the best we can do for now. “This is what a lot of small businesses will be reduced to with rents getting out of control.” However, Mr Hailes believed landlords couldn’t be blamed for skyrocketing rents. “I don’t blame them. It’s the whole situation, and with insurance rates going up the landlords have no choice but to put the prices up.” Meanwhile, Mr Hailes said the earthquakes had led to more “needy people” visiting his stores to buy basic necessities. He said the increased level of need had prompted him to support the local community instead of helping overseas charities. “I used to send money overseas to help feed hungry children but after the earthquakes I decided to focus on helping people here.”

Draft Christchurch Transport Plan

Big reach: The large demolition machine, nicknamed ‘Twinkle Toes’, on site at Hillmorton Hospital on Monday morning. Photo: Samantha Early
A MASSIVE excavator brought in for demolitions in the Christchurch central business district and nicknamed Twinkle Toes ventured outside the red zone this week to take down a damaged chimney at Hillmorton Hospital. Twinkle Toes, which weighs 208 tonnes and has a 65-metre reach, was dismantled in the early hours of Thursday morning last week (June 19) and transported to the Hillmorton Hospital site to be reassembled for the deconstruction of a 45-metre tall chimney. The chimney was damaged in the September 2010 earthquake and requires demolition rather than repair. It was estimated the deconstruction process would take just two days.
Tell us what you think about the 30-year draft Christchurch Transport Plan.
Nikau Contractors health and safety director Helina Stil said the time to safely deconstruct the chimney with Twinkle Toes was dramatically reduced when compared to a cut and crane option, which could take weeks, maybe months and create unnecessary disruptions. The machine, which was imported from England, is one of the largest pieces of demolition equipment in the Southern Hemisphere and the fourth largest in the world. It was said to be extremely precise and sensitive, featuring video cameras which allowed the operator to see everything happening 65 metres above them. It can be operated by one person.

Templeton swimming club supported Samantha Early
THE Templeton Swimming Club has some big decisions to make in the next two years. For the past decade it has been in the unenviable position of being a swimming club without its own pool, after the Templeton Hospital pool was closed. Recently the Riccarton Wigram Community Board granted the club $12,000 from its 2012 – 2013 Discretionary Response fund to go towards lane hire at the Wharenui Pool in Riccarton. “It’s still a swimming club that punches way above its weight and they get some very good results for the size of the club,” community board chairman Mike Mora said. Templeton Swimming Club president Wayne Rollinson said getting the funding was fantastic. “Without it we would certainly have to put fees up to the community. We’re trying to put a good service and an affordable service,” Mr Rollinson said. The club currently has about 80 members. Mr Rollinson said some of the club’s
coaching staff were currently embarking on a private venture to build their own pool for a learn-to-swim business. He said as a club they had some big decisions to make in the next 12 to 24 months and the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston, due to be finished next year, provided more opportunities for competitive swimming. Mr Rollinson is also the president of Swimming Canterbury West Coast and said they were looking at the provision of aquatic facilities across the city. “At the moment we have got Jellie Park pool being upgraded and we have supported the Central City 50-metre aquatic centre for the city and that’s where we’re sitting at the moment.” He said everyone was waiting for the Christchurch Central Development Unit to release its 100-day blueprint for the central city. “Once that comes out that will give everyone a better understanding particularly around a central aquatic centre,” Mr Rollinson said.

South Library and Beckenham Service Centre close Shock closure: Spreydon Heathcote Community Board chairman Phil Clearwater said about 1000 people a day used the South Library and Beckenham Service Centre, which was closed after a detailed engineering evaluation revealed it was earthquake prone. Photo: Samantha Early
SOUTH Library and the Beckenham Service Centre in Colombo Street closed on Monday after the buildings were found to be below 34 percent of the New Building Standard (NBS). The Christchurch City Council has agreed to close any of its buildings which fail to meet this standard and the results of the second stage of a Detailed Engineering Evaluation (DEE) revealed this to be the case. Engineers will now carry out further investigations on several parts of the building, which will help to better inform the development of permanent repair and earthquake strengthening options for the facility. The council is also working with engineers to look at the possibility of short-term repair and strengthening options, which could allow the building to re-open sooner. Council general manager community services Michael Aitken said the council was aware the closure of the building would be a huge loss for the community and the staff who worked there. “The library and service centre has been
a very popular destination for so many Christchurch people and we know the facility will be greatly missed. Once we have more information, we will have a clearer picture of the next steps that can be taken.” Since the February 2011 earthquake, engineers have carried out a number of Level Two Rapid Assessments, which are a visual assessment of the inside and outside of a building. A qualitative DEE, which is the first stage of a DEE, was also completed in April this year. It assessed the building as having a seismic capacity of more than 34 percent of the NBS and it therefore remained open. However, more intrusive investigations, which include the removal of wall claddings and ceiling linings, carried out during the quantitative DEE have found more damage to the building than was previously identified. A copy of the engineering report for South Library and Beckenham Service Centre is available on the Council website later today at www.ccc.govt.nz/ facilitiesrebuild.
Online map of city attractions launched CHRISTCHURCH City Council has launched a new online interactive map, Find:Chch, which allows people to access up-to-date information about what there is to see, eat and do in Christchurch. Find:Chch is a quick and easy way for people to find what they are looking for – from markets to places to stay, free Wi-Fi spots, parks, accommodation and shopping, marketing manager Richard Stokes said. The map is located on the Findchch.com website. “The map is regularly updated, which means residents and visitors to the city now have accurate and current information on hand. Find:Chch is also available ‘onthe-go’ on mobile devices such as tablets and iPhones,” Mr Stokes said. Mayor Bob Parker said Find:Chch was a dynamic tool which sent a clear message that Christchurch was open for business, with lots of great experiences and attractions on offer for residents and visitors alike. “Find:Chch has been set up to be responsive to the current fluid environment – things to see and do can easily be updated or added at any time. This online map will be an invaluable tool for connecting people with these places as the city’s rebuild and recovery continues,” Mr Parker said. Enquiries about being added to the new online map can be made by clicking the contact and feedback link on the www.findchch.com website, or by emailing Christchurch@ccc.govt.nz.

Popular post-quake project turns one Celebration time: Gap Filler’s ‘Think Differently’ book exchange, through which people can exchange books on the corner of Barbadoes and Kilmore Streets, turned one last Tuesday. The anniversary was marked by a small gathering of Gap Filler supporters who ate cake to celebrate. Gap Filler was set up after the September 4, 2010 earthquake to bring creative community projects to the gaps left by demolished buildings. Director and project coordinator Coralie Winn said the fridge had exceeded all their expectations. “This has been a really wonderful project because of how well used it has been by local people. It has really been adopted by the local community and quite a local icon,” she said. Photo: Tim Church

Olympian reflects on golden moment MAINLAND Press caught up with Christchurch resident Tony Ineson, who was part of the men’s hockey team which beat Australia to take out gold at the 1976 Olympic Games, held in Montreal, Canada.
World Cup team in 1973, given my brother Chris was already in the team, was also fantastic.
Do you still have vivid memories of yourself and the team winning? Yes, I do, and during the game it was things like creating and missing opportunities, the goal, desperate defence including the sound of the ball shattering Trevor Manning’s (our goalie) knee, glancing at the ground clock painfully ticking away the minutes and seconds whilst under an onslaught from the Aussies. But most of all I remember the final whistle and the elation and later on the celebrations with teammates and management who had developed an amazing team spirit over a number of years and, the result and reward was a gold medal.
How do you think our hockey players will fare in London? Sport, like most things in life, is about creating and taking opportunities. Our hockey teams are not far off the pace and if they make the most of their opportunities and, with a little bit of luck, they’ve got to be in with a medal chance.
How did it feel to score the winning goal? It felt great but as a penalty corner striker it was my job to try and finish off an opportunity that others had created and I don’t deserve any more praise than they do. The important thing is to score more goals than the opposition and who scores them is not important!

Off to London carrying the hopes of a country for this latest group as well. Men’s double scullers Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan, as well as men’s quadruple scullers Matthew Trott and John Storey are the other Christchurch rowers competing in London. Hewitt, who finished eighth in Beijing, is a strong medal prospect. She has also won the World Championship Series Grand Final in 2011, been crowned World Triathlon Champion in 2005 and took the bronze medal in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. Currently ranked first in the 2012 ITU World Triathlon Series, Hewitt has form in her favour as she prepares for London. Equestrian riders Caroline Powell and Jonelle Richards, track cyclists Joanne Kiesanowski, Shane Archbold and Lauren Ellis, along with sprint cyclist Natasha Hansen round out the Canterbury connection. In the Paralympics, 19-year-old swimming star Sophie Pascoe will carry big expectations with her when the games take place from late August. Pascoe bagged gold and silver medals at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing when she was just 15 years old. Equestrian rider Anthea Gunner, of Swannanoa, will be competing in the dressage event.
Did you know? Canterbury has strong historical links to the Olympic movement. Leonard Cuff, a founding member of the first International Olympic Committee in 1894, was born in Christchurch. In London in 1908, Christchurch hurdler Henry Murray became one of New Zealand’s first three Olympians and first flag
bearer. At the next games in Stockholm in 1912, tennis player Anthony Wilding, also from Christchurch, was again one of only three New Zealand athletes to participate. In recognition of its commitment to the Olympic Movement, Christchurch was made New Zealand’s first Olympic city in 1991.

CANTERBURY’S Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls are on the cusp of what for most will be the biggest moment of their careers so far. The 2012 London Olympics will officially commence with the much-anticipated opening ceremony on Saturday morning (Friday evening in London) but it will be during the following 16 days that our athletes will hope to create their own magic moments. Five rowers and four cyclists, three equestrian riders, along with triathlete Andrea Hewitt and hockey player Brad Shaw, were all either born, currently live, or have lived for a significant time in Canterbury. At 56 and attending his sixth Olympics, rider Mark Todd, who lived in Rangiora until recently, is both the oldest and most experienced of the bunch. At the other end of the scale, at just 19 years of age, Eve Macfarlane will not only be the province’s youngest competitor, but also the youngest member of the New Zealand rowing team. Macfarlane will be competing in the women’s quadruple scull. New Zealand rowers captured a record haul of one gold and two bronze medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and there are big expectations

he NZ Society of Naturopaths has expressed concern about the increase in MRSA “Superbug” infections triggered by the overuse of antibiotics. Environmental Science and Research has just issued a report stating the prevalence of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in New Zealand has increased significantly over the last 10 years (2002 to 2011), cumulating in a massive 37.0 per cent increase between 2010 and 2011 - the largest single-year rise during the last 10 years. MRSA, known as “Superbugs”, are infections resistant to antibiotics. MRSA evolved through the overuse of antibiotics by the community

Telling stories Remember telling children that they are “telling stories”? Meaning that they are making the story up – lying, in fact. When you tell a story about something that has happened to you, do you exaggerate or stress things to make it a better “story”? Reflect on how you tell your story – do you leave parts out, do you involve emotionality? You might want to amuse others, or attract sympathy. But is it the real truth? Aside from wanting to improve on the story, we all see what happens differently. We filter the world and what happens to us. We perceive things differently depending on our beliefs about ourselves and others. We don’t see the complete picture because we have a personality, we have conditioning that makes us look at things in particular ways. Listen to yourself and consciously decide how to tell the story. annette@emotionaltherapy.co.nz

This busy practice provides professional and caring chiropractic services for the whole family – seeing everyone from newborns to patients in their 90s. Greg loves that his work gives him the opportunity to help make other people’s lives so much better. In the years that he has been a chiropractor Greg estimates he has helped thousands of people with a variety of problems. He says, “There aren’t many jobs where you know you are improving people’s quality of life and making a real difference.” When asked who should see a chiropractor, Greg believes that anyone who wants to keep in top shape should be seeing him. He sees a lot of people with bad backs, headaches, sciatica and many other ailments but equally sees top sportspeople wanting to keep their bodies in the best shape possible. Greg and his team often marvel at the length of time people are willing to live with pain before doing something about it. “Long term pain is not normal and if it is affecting your quality of life then you need to do something about it. Don’t keep waiting until tomorrow! Chiropractic may be able to help you,” he says. Rolleston Family Chiropractic is conveniently located in the Rolleston Shopping Centre. Appointments are essential. Snack on sweet and tasty strawberries W hile it’s still so cold, it may not seem like the most inviting time to be in the garden, but research shows that strawberry plants that get enough hours in the ground during cold winter temperatures before flowering will produce a higher number of berries over the season. Strawberries need winter chills as well as the summer heat and sun. Strawberries, like most other berries, are sun-lovers so they need to be planted in a sunny position. No sun equals no flavour. To get the best berries, start with the right ingredients. Select healthy strawberry plants from the garden centre. Alternatively, you can use

old strawberry runners already in your garden, but be aware that they probably won’t produce the bumper crop new plants would. Berries from older runners tend to have less vigour and a diminished flavour. New patch – find a position that gets all day sun for at least six hours. Dig over the soil carefully and to a depth of about 20cm. Next, blend in well-rotted compost or Tui Super Sheep Pellets where possible. Allow the soil to settle for a week or so. This enables the worms and nutrients to meld into the soil. Next, add a layer of Tui Strawberry Mix and work slightly into the soil. Plant berries about 20cm apart in rows; water well. Allow five plants per
person to have enough berries for everyone to enjoy. Existing patch – use scissors to remove and cut out all old leaves, dig out sick looking plants and remove excess runners. Next, fertilize with Strawberry Food - about a handful around each plant. Finish by adding a layer of Strawberry Straw around the berries to keep the soil weedfree and the berries clean as they ripen. In pots, baskets and containers – fill pots, baskets and containers with Strawberry Mix ready for planting. Strawberries in containers can be planted a lot closer together than in the garden because there is generally better air movement. Allow about a hand space between plants. Christchurch’s second oldest rugby club turns 130 MERIVALE-Papanui rugby players of all ages celebrated 130 years of the club’s existence with seven wins from nine games at Nunweek Park on Saturday. The club is the second oldest in Christchurch, behind only the Christchurch Football Club which will turn 150 next year. Club president Matt Hinman said it had been a very good day to mark the anniversary. “I can’t complain at all. It went off like clockwork - perfect weather, good turnout.” Celebrations continued with a prize giving later on at the club rooms which was attended by around 200 people. Mr Hinman said the club was grateful to the
Canterbury Rugby Football Union for changing their games around to get all the teams playing at home for the occasion. “The union pulled some strings, kindly they managed to get all the teams moved, which was a big mission, but it was brilliant.” Eight past or present All Blacks, including Colin Slade and Greg Sommerville, have played for the club which has won many titles in the past. “This year we’re just aiming to play rugby, get the kids playing and do our best to really promote the club,” Mr Hinman said. “Building a good club culture is the key factor.”
Breaking away: Harrison Mitchell takes the ball from the back of the scrum for the under 11 MerivalePapanui Ferraris against their Belfast Gold counterparts on Sunday.

2024 not such a silly idea THERE are very few advantages in getting older. In most cases the mind is willing but the body just will not respond. At times I find it frustrating not to be able do the things that used to come naturally. Simple things become harder and in some cases you just have to give in and realise that you are no longer capable of keeping up with the younger generation. On the positive side of growing older I now find that the “young bull” attitude has moved to the “old bull” frame of mind. When you were young you were bullet-proof and everything was a challenge without the wisdom of having lived and learnt by life’s experiences. With the ageing process comes the ability to look back and chuckle at what you thought were mind-changing decisions
you thought you had to make when you were young. When the idea was floated a little while ago that Canterbury should seriously look at putting forward an application to host the 2024 Commonwealth Games, I thought those involved had rocks in their heads. As if Canterbury has not got enough on its plate with rebuilding our once-proud city. So who in their right mind would even entertain the idea? As I have more time on my hands to sit in my favourite chair and let my mind wander over events when they come up, I have started to think the promoters of such an idea may not be all that far off the mark. The majority of our sporting facilities have
been destroyed by an act of God and will all need to be rebuilt. This takes out of the equation the factors that have crippled so many other cities in the Commonwealth that have hosted previous games. In some cases it has not been unusual for host cities to have a repayment programme, which local ratepayers are saddled with for 25 years and beyond. In Canterbury’s case this would not be an issue. We have to totally rebuild our sporting facilities, both outdoor and indoor. Common sense would tell you that this rebuild would take place using the most modern building designs that are now available globally. With this in mind why would we not rebuild with a lifetime expectation of a 50-year
lifespan for our needs? What an opportunity this would be to show the world just how spectacular Christchurch’s vision for rebuilding a modern city was. We are not building facilities especially to host the games; we would indeed be building them to meet an existing demand that has been created out of disaster. Having had the time to think through the proposal, I now endorse the opportunity that would be presented to bring the largest group of athletes and officials from around the Commonwealth to our new city. Being older I can remember the “friendly games of 1974” and what a boost that event was, creating an opportunity for us all to bask in its reflected glory.

The champs: Lincoln High School’s boys’ badminton team won the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Championship for the first time on Sunday and in the process ended Burnside High School’s 20 year long stranglehold on the annual event. The team, from left, are Caelan Thomas (year 10), Sam Dobbs (year 12), Ewan Dickie (year 13), and Jones Jensen (year 13). Sisterly support For many Cantabrians fresh out of university, an OE is their reward for years of study and a break before “real life” begins. So it is for 22-year-old Liv Macfarlane, pictured packing this week before she left the family farm in Parnassus, North Canterbury on Tuesday for a spell of adventure in Europe and Asia. However, for Liv there is an important first stop on her travels – London, to see her younger sister Eve compete in the Olympic Games. Eve, 19, is one of the youngest members of New Zealand’s Olympic team and will be competing in rowing’s quadruple sculls event. Eve’s rise has been
meteoric, as she only took up rowing while in year 12 at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in Christchurch. Liv will be joined in London by her parents Charlie and Jo, and brother Jack, 17, and they will base themselves at Wimbledon to be close to Eve as she prepares for her event. Going into Liv’s rucksack is one of Eve’s childhood toys, as a reminder of home. It is wearing the medal Eve won last year in Slovenia, which ensured she crew qualified for the Olympics. More on Eve – P3, the Canterbury Games squad. P27.

MONTHS spent fossicking for over 6000 toothpaste cartons has paid off for Kaiapoi Borough School after they scooped the nationwide Colgate Carton Race last week. The school received $12,500 of sports equipment for winning the category of schools with over 250 pupils. Teacher Daniel George said waiting over the school holidays for the final result had been excruciating but the entire school was now “buzzing” from the win. “We were always quietly confident but it was really intense over the holidays. “The feeling around the school is wonderful
and it’s giving everyone something to smile about.” Mr George described the win as an “amazing” team effort involving the entire school, along with overseas support from schools as far afield as Canada, America and the United Kingdom. “It started off just as one class and grew to be a school-wide contest, with each class competing for the most cartons. “The response we received from schools both here and overseas was amazing.” Mr George said the win provided a muchneeded boost for the school after all the

difficulties staff and families had faced since the September 2010 earthquake. “It hasn’t been an easy time for us so winning this has been huge. “It’s not just about winning but giving the kids a goal to aim for and something positive to achieve.” The school hadn’t yet decided how the prize money would be spent but Mr George said replacing old gymnastics equipment was high on the priority list. “We’ll buy a few larger items then divide the rest of the money equally among the syndicates and they will decide which sports equipment they’d like to buy.” Mr George added that it was great to see the top two spots going to local schools with Woodend School placed second in the same category. “It’s amazing that we have two schools in the same area doing so well and it shows how strong the community spirit is.”

Mairehau high School Encouraging ExcEllEncE in our community From the Principal’s desk
it has been a term of contrasting events and emotions for our school community, but i have been proud of everyone’s ability to sustain the effort to be the best that we all can be, and to achieve to our absolute potential as a school. For our senior students, the focus has increasingly moved towards academic achievement and progress in the respective levels of Ncea. our junior students have been supported in their work by their deans, and all of the staff at school. our students are inspirational – whether it be in drama and musical performances or as promotional ambassadors for our school, they always uphold Mairehau’s values in action when representing the school and wearing our colours.

Kia ora and welcome
i would like to thank everyone in our community for the continued support and effort you are all making to sustain the terrific progress we are making as a school. our bottom line is, and always will be, to meet the learning and other needs of every single student.
Our choir recently competed in the Big Sing choral competition at the cBS arena.
where each of the 35 schools who entered, performed one selected piece.
The choir performed 2 songs under the direction of our singing teacher, Ms Barbara Mulholland. our soloist was Maddie Williams and the choir was accompanied by our music teachers, Mrs Margaret robertson and Mr liam Muir.
The final song for the evening, ’conquest of Paradise’, was sung as a joint performance by all the singers who had performed. it was a moving and fitting end to the festival.
The Big Sing is a national choral festival which was run over 2 days. it concluded with an evening concert
We are very proud of our students in the way they performed and carried themselves.

NZQA Top Art at Mairehau in the last week of Term 2 Mairehau hosted the Top art exhibition in the school hall. it showed examples of excellence folios at level 3 in all five disciplines, Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Sculpture and Design. Students and teachers from around the canterbury region were able to book in and visit the exhibition after the existing venue, christchurch art gallery, had been closed temporarily. The intent of the Top art exhibition is, first and foremost, to celebrate and acknowledge the breadth and depth of student responses to the level 3 Visual art external assessment. it also acts as a vehicle to offer teachers professional development in the context of model answers and responses to the exam
specifications practice. Visiting the venues where the exhibitions are held also offers students a glimpse of the performance expectations at excellence level across the Visual art fields. This may allow for a dialogue between teachers and students around specific issues in meeting an excellence level. chelsea Thomson, an ex student of Mairehau from 2011, had her Photography folio displayed in the exhibition. chelsea is currently studying Fine arts at otago Polytechnic. We would like to thank NZQa for the opportunity to hold the exhibition here in christchurch, at our school, and for its continued support in providing teachers and students with this learning opportunity.
Left to right: Ricky (drums), Lorne (vocals and guitar), Kaisie (bass).
Congratulations go to students Lorne Joblin, Kaisie Van Dyk and Ricky Suaesi who were selected for the Smokefree Rockquest Regional finals. This is a wonderful achievement for any student but even more so since they are all in their first year of high school at Year 9. All 3 boys thoroughly enjoyed their experience, and it has given them the drive to “compete until we win it!”

Our Musical Drama production this year was ‘Disco Inferno’, which was performed in mid May. This comedy is about a young man’s dream of becoming successful and the pact that he makes with the rather unscrupulous ‘Lady Marmalade’.
Ngawati Heremaia The saddest aspect of life in the Mairehau community has been the recent, untimely passing of a much loved and respected teaching colleague, Mr Ngawati heremaia. Ngawati joined the staff of our school in 2005 and has been an integral part of our Mathematics and learning support programmes. Ngawati was a larger than life figure with a huge heart and a ready wit. his cheeky, engaging persona endeared him to staff and students alike. Ngawati will be sorely missed by us all at Mairehau high School.
Jack soon becomes an international success but loses his devoted girlfriend, Jane. As his situation worsens, Jack wishes only to get his life back to the way it used to be. With disco music that took many of its audience back one or two years, along with the disco dancing, the audience was thoroughly entertained. Year 12 student Haven Gardiner-Gray did an outstanding job as Student Director and Alex TomlinsFrench (Year 13) was her assistant.

Gourmet feast for Wainoni elderly High spirits: New Brighton Catholic School year 2 students and teacher Miss Christophers excitedly await their turn on stage during the school’s recent Radio NBC production. The entire school spent last term preparing for the 50s and 60s-themed radio show, which included plenty of singing and oldfashioned jingles. Teacher Lorraine Lowe said the students had a wonderful time and gained a great deal of confidence from performing live in front of their parents.

New home for Bishopdale preschool Chelsea Shover
A STUDENT dressed as a warrior approaches the preschoolers and lays down a rautapu. A four-year-old clad in a korowai accepts the sprig of leaves, waving it above his head as teachers lead him and the other Bishopdale Community Preschool students to their new home on Breens Intermediate’s campus. Nearly four months after the preschool’s building at Bishopdale Mall was designated earthquake-prone and promptly closed, the centre reopened last week on the Breens Intermediate campus. Programming began on July 16, and Breens held a powhiri on July 20 to formally welcome the younger children. The preschool closed on March 26, and Breens offered its space in early April. But it took the better part of three months to prepare the area for its tiny occupants. The school’s radio station was converted to a sleeping room for naptime, and the yard intended as an outdoor science area was

turned into a playground, complete with jungle gym and safety fence. Parents at the powhiri were thrilled to have their children back in Bishopdale. When the preschool closed, they had to find temporary preschools, or stay home, sometimes delaying work plans or dropping shifts to fill childcare gaps. Frances Rowe, whose son has attended Bishopdale for two and a half years, said Bishopdale’s not-for-profit status sets it apart from the “substandard care” she found at another preschool during the transition. “The teachers here go to work to love the children,” she said. Centre manager Sarah Straver said when Bishopdale opened re-enrolment in May, it received 81 applications, about double the daily capacity at Breens. Then a delay pushed the Breens’ opening back from the June goal. During that time, Mrs Straver said, some families grew accustomed to

their temporary schools and cancelled reenrolment. By last week, 65 children were on the roll. The campus can currently accommodate 30 students per day. Once the portacom is finished – construction work continued in the background of Friday’s ceremony – the centre will take 43 students at a time. Mrs Straver said Bishopdale would be at Breens for at least two years. Renovation costs were split between the schools, Breens chairperson Stewart Smith said. Sharing a campus offers unique opportunities for connections like the buddy programme, which pairs intermediate students with preschool students. At Friday’s ceremony, before sharing a meal of sausage sandwiches, fruit and sweets, Breens students presented the preschool with large bags of play dough and other gifts. Students from Isleworth, Harewood and Cotswold primary schools also participated in the powhiri.

Inspirational design Winter bicycle maintenance for Rangi Ruru
‘
The cycling scene
with Paul Odlin
HELLO, all you hardy winter cyclists. Braving cold and wet conditions not only requires a little extra care and maintenance of your body, but also of your bicycle. Here are some useful tips for keeping your second-most important facility in ship-shape working order. When riding in the rain or when you’re caught out in the elements, stick scrunched up newspaper inside your sodden cycle shoes to maintain their shape and dry them out for your next ride. Also use newspaper down the front of your cycle jersey (but not against the skin), as a means to keep the wind out, warmth in and sweat away from skin. Regularly check your tyres for signs of wear (the rear tyre will wear twice as fast as the front) and catalysts for punctures – shards of glass and stray metals. These nasties can lodge in a tyre but not pierce the rubber immediately.

Due to increased grit on the road and wetter conditions, these catalysts become more of an issue. Other parts of your bicycle susceptible to increased wear due to the wintry wet conditions are your rims and brakes. Regularly clean these surfaces to remove grit, which grinds down the rubber of the brakes and alloy/carbon of the rim. Finally, a good guideline for cleaning and lubing your chain is weekly, in DRY weather. Depending on the lube that you use (some are heavier or generally more water-resistant than others), you’ll need to re-lube after no more than two rides in the wet, preferably after one! Also, always apply the chain lube to the inside of the chain (the surface that does not directly face the road). Apply it just in front of the rear derailleur. Good luck out there, soldiers!
Dragon Boat Festival celebrates 40 years of NZChina diplomatic relations
“A LIVING, evolving, vibrant learning environment specifically designed for girls and teaching and learning in the next century” is how architect Craig Brown describes his plan for Rangi Ruru Girls’ School. The outdoor concept plan, above, incorporates
environmental sustainability, green spaces and areas for sport and socialising. Areas of the school site are to be cleared in October for building to start soon afterwards. New classrooms are expected to be ready starting mid-2013.”
Tap dancer wins talent show
CHINESE martial arts, a Maori Haka, musical numbers and traditional dances delighted 400 guests at a recent gala to celebrate the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival and four decades of diplomatic relations between New Zealand. Local Chinese
entrepreneurs and students who won national prizes were honoured at the event, co-sponsored by 13 Christchurch Chinese Community Associations, supported by the Office of Ethnic Affairs and held at Westburn School.
Over the school holidays, 11-year-old Emma Treleaven of Cotswold Primary School tap danced her way to first place in the Northlands Star Search. Emma has been dancing for five and a half years and takes weekly classes. During the first heats and semi-finals, she danced to Evil Gal. She danced her championship number to Dream a Little Dream and Mess Around. Her prize included a $1000 Northlands gift certificate and a $400 photo shoot. Emma is pictured with Erin Simpson and Jason Raela.

Rebuilt war memorial unveiled AFTER the Elmwood Normal School war memorial toppled and broke into seven pieces in the February 22 earthquake, the Merivale Precinct and the Elmwood Normal School began fundraising to rebuild it. The monument is in memory of the 157 former pupils who served in World War I. Completed just before Anzac Day this year, the memorial took over 200 hours to rebuild, according to James Tait, a stonemason who worked on the project. Westpac chipped in with $10,000, the Fendalton Waimari Community Board contributed $4000 and Leigh’s Construction donated time to complete the project, precinct secretary Emma Newman said. At the unveiling ceremony last Friday, children of precinct members and Leigh’s Construction workers gathered to cut the ribbon and hear from Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker. Mr Parker spoke about the vital importance of undertaking “small community milestones” in addition to larger recovery projects. “The symbolic nature of what you’ve done is incredible,” he said.
