PATIENTS and staff at the Canterbury Charity Hospital met British pop legend Sir Cliff Richard on Friday when he visited the hospital as a follow-up to the donation he made to the organisation in 2012. Sir Cliff was in Christchurch to perform at the CBS Arena and made time during his short visit to look around the hospital. “I think it’s fantastic,” he said. “I’ve been to many places where the local community have supplied something that’s needed by the people of that community and usually it’s the people of the community that pay for it, so it’s always very nice to come and support someone like that. “Whatever reason, if people can’t afford any treatment at least you know there’s a place you can go to right here.” Long-time fan Charlie Batterbury went to the Charity Hospital to see Sir Cliff and said he had enjoyed last Thursday’s concert. “He was just so agile all over the stage, just as he’s always been.” Sir Cliff attributes his agile and healthy body to his dietary plan. “If you want to feel good and look good you’ve got to work at it. I have a dietary system, it’s not really a diet, it’s a regime of eating certain things. I think if you don’t abuse your body it helps a bit. There are certain things I’ve never done, which are smoking and drugs.” Sir Cliff said some of his songs had become part of people’s memories. “We as pop singers and rock singers have this privileged position of being part of people’s psyche. time.” Sir Cliff said his fans had been staunchly loyal and no more so than in Denmark, England and New Zealand where there had been a definite difference in the support for him and his band The Shadows. “They’ve always been really supportive. They [his New Zealand fans] have enjoyed the fact that I was able to progress through my career and they have grown with me.” Back in Christchurch he hated the idea of the cathedral and the beautiful city being demolished. Despite that, he had been pleasantly surprised. “If you didn’t know there used to be a building there, everything still looks wonderful,” he said. “All of the shops are made of containers and it looked fantastic. I think you should keep it that way.” He was impressed by Christchurch people. “We’ve seen no moaning faces and everywhere we have been, we have been dealt with politely, and smiling faces, saying this is something we are going to get over. So, a salute to you all,” he said. Dubbed “the British Elvis”, Sir Cliff has reportedly been the only singer to have had a number-one single in the United Kingdom for five consecutive decades and is the third top-selling singles artist in UK history. The 72-year-old’s music career has spanned 54 years and shows no sign of ending. This year he plans to go to Nashville in April to make an album of his rock songs, and make a DVD of his Sydney concert, the same concert he performed in New Zealand.

Bridge repair delays continue After nearly two years and thousands of aftershocks the Bridge of Remembrance is still standing. Over the past year the Christchurch City Council has said it was working to fix the structure but those repairs have yet to be carried out. CTV News journalist Marcus Gibbs reports.

A Run to Remember giveaway He said council staff recently told him repair work would start at the end of January, but that was postponed for another fortnight. The council wanted to wait until repairs started before being interviewed about the bridge, but in October last year Christchurch City Council maintenance operations manager Malcolm Park said work could start in the early months of this year would take about 17 months in construction for both the bridge and the arch. That means if the council isn’t starting work on the bridge for another week or so, they’re going to have to work extra fast to meet the RSA’s deadline. Mr Barron said we’re lucky the bridge was still standing. “If we’d had another major shake the odds are we would have a pile of rubble because they never did do any temporary supports.” Last October Mr Park said the work on the bridge would cost at least $3 million as it was so complex. “It’s kind of like keyhole surgery, because we don’t want to harm the heritage fabric of the arch we have to go in through small holes and we have to form concrete anchors for rods that will pin this whole thing together. So we go in through the sides and through the top.” Mr Barron will be watching closely to see whether the council does start work in about a week’s time, so veterans and their families can walk across the Bridge of Remembrance once more.

IT wasn’t open for last Anzac day and it won’t be ready for this coming Anzac day. Christchurch Returned and Services Association (RSA) president Russell Barron said if the Bridge of Rememberance wasn’t ready in time for the 100th anniversary of New Zealand taking part in World War I, it will be a disaster. “This bridge is part of those commemorations. This bridge had New Zealanders walking across it going to wars, so I believe the council has a responsibility to actually make certain that this is up and running, ready to go for that date, fourth of August, 2014.” Mainland Press and CTV News first spoke to Mr Barron about saving the bridge 15 months ago when the council told him it was planning to secure the bridge and open it to the public. At the time he was disappointed it wouldn’t be reopened before the Re:Start mall opened, but he was hoping it would reopen by Christmas 2011. Fast forward to the year 2013 and the bridge is still standing, but there’s nothing protecting it from further aftershocks. This is because other groups were worried that propping up the structure would ruin the heritage fabric of the bridge. “My answer to that has always been that if the bridge collapses you’ve got no fabric so why worry about it. You can always repair stone later,” Mr Barron said.

INSTEAD of killing cats to protect birds - a la Gareth Morgan - cats should be trained to eat economists. Cats will eat anything, although they can be fussy. Some will eat only a bird’s head. Others turn their noses up at everything but a dead rat. Morgan is at the nuttier end of the big fruit cake that is economic theory. Once called ‘the dismal science’, economics has caused more damage to the natural environment than whatever wiped out dinosaurs. We can’t afford to wait for something similar to eradicate economists. De-sexing them would take forever. Better to wipe out their breeding grounds in universities. Ban the teaching of economics and make all economists and especially those employed as consultants by the Ministry of Transport, submit to regular warrant of fitness checks on their sanity. They’re the ones who calculated the ‘benefits’ of reducing the frequency of vehicle WoF checks to be worth $159 million a year. A neat, almost-round figure, reported as ‘savings’ by lazy, credulous mainstream media - how was it compiled? Directed to a website, I found enough data and equations to baffle a busload of Einsteins. With help, I eventually found what I was looking for buried in Figure 1, the regulatory impact statement. Broken down, two-thirds of the total ‘savings’ of $159 million from fewer WoF checks - $107 million (67 per cent) - came from not having to pay for them. Doh! The reduction in compliance costs of $45 million (28 per cent) is a very rough estimate

indeed, based on average waiting times, costed out at $19.23 an hour. Then there’s $18 million in ‘avoidable’ repairs - those not needed to pass the test but which, like a leaking brake fluid hose, might save lives down the road. Jobs will be lost, of course. How many? Not sure, say economists, difficult to be precise. Maybe 1000 to 2000 over 12 years. But hey! Never mind the higher unemployment rate, enjoy the lower regulatory impact. “Consumers will likely spend the inspection charge savings on other goods and services” . . . [so] . . . “there will be an increase in the demand for labour in other industries.” In other words, out-of-work mechanics will be freed to become supermarket check-out operators, baristas and club bouncers. Any muppet knows the real world is not like that. I am not as wealthy as Gareth Morgan but will pay $5 for every economist turned into pet food. Piling vibrations a concern for residents

LAST Tuesday’s public drop-in sessions concerning the new Ferrymead Bridge showed some “positive engagement”, the Christchurch City Council’s unit manager transport and greenspace John Mackie says. People were reasonably positive and the sessions gave them the opportunity to ask the experts about the effects of the bridge construction, Mr Mackie said. Most of the interest expressed by local residents concerned the disruption to traffic flow, how long the work would go on for and what the piling vibrations would be like. “People wondered if the vibrations would be like aftershocks, but they won’t be anything like the aftershocks we’ve experienced, it will be more like when heavy trucks pass by,” Mr Mackie said. To provide access to the suburbs east of the bridge while the new one is being constructed, the contractors, HEB Construction Ltd, have built two temporary, one-way bridges, one going towards the city and the other towards Redcliffs and Sumner. “An interesting dynamic has emerged,” Mr Mackie said. “Locals had got to know the contracting staff before the September 2010 earthquake, when work on the bridge had started. The contractors have been engaging with the community and when the second temporary bridge was completed, people passing by gave positive feedback to the contractors, and showed them they were very pleased with the progress.” The next stage in the project will be the demolition of the old bridge, using a type of crane called a ‘nibbler’. This will take about three months, Mr Mackie said. Following that there will be 15 months of pile driving. This will involve driving 10 piles with a diameter ranging from 1.1 metres to 2.4 metres into the riverbed. The piles will be driven about 20 metres through sand and mud, then a further five to eight metres into bedrock. “This will be a long exercise, and there will be noise and there will be vibration,” Mr Mackie warned. In a bid to minimise the inconvenience to local residents, Mr Mackie said the hours of drilling operation would be restricted to 7am to 6pm weekdays and 7am to noon on Saturdays, and there wouldn’t be any drilling done on Sundays.

“Over the first two years there will be continual disruption, but it is hoped that there will be more limited disruption as the work progresses.” The bridge is being built to the latest engineering standards at a cost of $34.87 million, with $22.12 million being provided by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). NZTA southern regional director Jim Harland said the NZTA had always recognised the significance of the bridge and had committed to providing more than half the cost of upgrading the bridge before the earthquakes occurred. “Following the February 2011 earthquake and the need to rebuild the damaged bridge, the NZTA increased its funding to more than $22 million,” Mr Harland said. This would ensure residents had a new bridge that was 100 per cent of the new building code

and would provide an improved certainty of continued access if there was another significant event. Mr Harland said the new bridge would also help support better passenger transport links to the eastern hill suburbs, with the additional bridge capacity enabling the implementation of Bus Priority on the Sumner route and improvements to both cyclist and pedestrian safety in the area. “If anyone has questions they can go to the council website, which will be continually updated. Alcohol policy timeline decided next week Sue Wells said there were implications the council would need to consider, with local government elections being held in October. “A new council will be inheriting the current council’s decision if the special consultative procedure for the LAP is carried out before the elections. It is not usual process for a council to develop a policy and not complete the process, but we have to choose to start or do nothing until 2014. “We know that alcohol is an important issue to the community and we want to make the best decision about whether it is appropriate to develop a policy now or wait until the new council is in place.”

THE timeline for developing a Christchurchspecific Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) will be decided at the full Christchurch City Council meeting on Thursday next week. Councillors must decide if they are happy for a LAP – a provision of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 – to be drafted as far as legally possible this year so it is ready to notify after December 18 as required by the legislation. The council, through the LAP, will potentially be able to regulate the opening hours for licensed premises, control the location of licensed premises and make re-entry restrictions to bars in the early hours of the morning. Funding for youth services under spotlight

THEY call themselves the MAYWOBs – middle aged youth workers on bikes, and they’ve ridden the length of New Zealand to raise awareness of one-stop-shop health and social services for young people and their families. The manager of Number 10, a youth one-stopshop (YOSS) in Invercargill, Jocelyn Johnstone, along with colleague Ruth McLauchlan, took to the road on a second-hand Kawasaki 250 motorcycle between January 14 and January 22 to visit youth services in eight cities, including Christchurch. The tour was to acknowledge young people as future leaders, show young people making positive changes after many challenges and celebrate the positive work going on in YOSS centres across the country, as well as calling for more sustainable funding. There are about 23 youth one-stop-shops in New Zealand, bringing services like doctors, nurses, social workers, counsellors, youth workers and peer support together in a youthfriendly environment. However, because they are funded through their individual District Health Boards there is a wide variation in the services they’re able to offer. “Some have been really well funded, some have been very poorly funded because nationally how youth money is spent is not well managed, it is very fragmented,” Ms Johnstone said. She wanted the services to work together more as a national body; however that was difficult when they were all struggling themselves. Ms Johnstone said New Plymouth’s free youth health centre was closed last October due to lack of funds and youth sector leaders feared more would follow if something was not done – that would be to the detriment of about 50,000 people aged between 10 and 25 registered with one-stop-

shops nationwide. In Christchurch, the 298 Youth Health Centre, part of the Youth Hub on Barbadoes Street, is among those able to offer a wide range of services. Opened last August, it is the reincarnation of the 198 Youth Health Centre which closed in 2010 due to lack of funds. Its head, Dr Sue Bagshaw, said there were inequalities in youth access to services across the country and cuts to the one-stop-shops would cost taxpayers in increased numbers of people attending emergency departments, untreated sexually transmitted diseases, unplanned pregnancies and long-term support through the mental health system. As part of the tour the MAYWOBs worked with film-maker Guy Ryan to film inspiring stories from young people who despite having tough starts had turned their lives around to be thriving and helping others. It’s hoped the stories will be shared on television and social media. “I want to support my age group who really don’t know what it’s like for young people out there and have no idea of what the journey of turning around actually looks like,” Ms Johnstone said. While in Christchurch the youth workers presented their ideas to Wigram MP and Labour’s youth affairs spokesperson Megan Woods and gave her a letter to pass on to Prime Minister John Key. “We cannot afford to lose these facilities, especially at a time when our young people face an ever-increasing dole queue, and the coroner is raising concerns about the number of young New Zealanders taking their own lives,” Ms Woods said.

THE Christchurch City Council is asking residents to take it easy when watering gardens and lawns on hot days to help control the load on the water supply system. A string of hot days last week saw water demand remain high, putting pressure on the city’s water supply. Christchurch residents went through more than 200,000 cubic metres of water – the equivalent of almost 90 Olympic swimming pools - per day last week. Last year, the city had water shortages and restrictions because of damaged water pipes. So far the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team has replaced 20 kilometres of freshwater piping. Three new water reservoirs have been built in Huntsbury Hill and Victoria Park, while New Brighton’s new fresh water station in Rawhiti Domain is now pumping water to residents from three new wells.

Liquefaction report ENVIRONMENT Canterbury (ECan) last week released a review of liquefaction information for Christchurch and neighbouring districts outside the green and red zones. The review report maps areas where building projects will no longer need expensive 15-metre deep ground tests and other areas where these tests will still be required. The report covers 20 years of liquefaction studies and draws on the experience of the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. The main purpose of the report is to provide territorial authorities and communities with general guidance on where geotechnical investigation and engineering assessment of liquefaction potential may or may not be required for plan changes, and for subdivision and building consents. It may also be useful for lifeline utility and emergency management planning.

New exhibition opens CHRISTCHURCH Art Gallery TePuna o Waiwhetu’s latest exhibition De Lautour / Greig / Hammond, featuring new works of art from leading Canterbury practitioners Tony de Lautour, Jason Greig and Bill Hammond, opened at the gallery’s Madras Street space in the NG building on Saturday. So the gallery is pleased to offer this chance for Christchurch gallery-goers to see new work by three artists with strong ties to Canterbury, where they have all trained and worked for many years.” The exhibition runs until Sunday, March 10.

NZTA establishes new office at Russley Road The NZ Transport Agency’s Christchurch staff will begin working from a single office - for the first time since the Agency was established in 2008 - this Monday February 11. The February 2011 earthquake thwarted original plans in 2011 to have all Christchurch staff located in a single building, the BNZ Building in Cathedral Square. Since the earthquake, staff have worked from home and a variety of other locations while the Agency has established a temporary home at the new Airport Business Park at 92 Russley Road. The Access and Use and Investment teams, which have worked from 245 Blenheim Road since mid 2011, will move into Russley Road tomorrow (Friday 8 February), joining their colleagues who have been on site for just over a year. The NZTA was one of the many Central Christchurch businesses that lost its offices in the earthquake. Southern Regional Director Jim Harland says Russley Road will be the Christchurch office while work continues to find new permanent premises back in the Central City. “With many of our key stakeholders and business partners located in the Central City or looking to move back to the area, it makes good sense from a business efficiency point of view for us to also move back into this area,” says Mr Harland. “In the mean time, it will be great to have everyone working under the one roof. It has been a difficult couple of years and I am proud of the resilience of the team. Despite the challenges, they have played a critical role, in not only helping with the rebuild and keeping our transport network operating, but also in getting on with new developments and keeping business as usual operating efficiently.” Mr Harland says with the NZTA’s location on Russley Road, all staff will be able to watch the development of the Western Corridor, one of the Christchurch Roads of National Significance (RoNS) projects.

Christchurch has lost much of its heritage as a result of the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. This week sees the first instalment of a new Mainland Press series intended to celebrate the heritage we haven’t lost – ‘Our Heritage’.

WITH its brightly coloured Spanish Mission style facades and enduring charm, New Regent Street stood out in Christchurch even before earthquakes reduced much of the inner city to rubble. Now its scheduled reopening near the end of March promises to be a high note for a city which has already lost so much of its past. Work has been going on in the street for months and although engineering challenges forced the postponement of the original December reopening target, things now appear to be on track. New Regent St Building Owners Committee vice-chairperson Betty Hazeldine said tenancies in the street’s 38 buildings were being filled by a mixture of newcomers and returning businesses such as Coffee Lovers and Café Stir. Mrs Hazeldine and her husband Brian ran their shop Pastel Shoe Dyers in the street for 22 years up until the earthquakes. The business was the oldest in the street having originally moved in in 1934. Although the business had since been sold and would not be returning, the couple still owned the building and were excited about the reopening of the street. “It’s special to me because it seems to be a wonderful attraction for Christchurch and also for the tourists. We saw many tourists coming to our shops,” she said. “I’ve never seen the volume of people mingling around as we could see on lunch times in New Regent St.” Sadly another of the street’s long-term businesses, Paul Dunlop and Associates optometrists, which had been in the street from 1940, will not be returning. Mr Dunlop died in the February 22 earthquake and the business has relocated to Spreydon. The history of the New Regent St site is as

colourful as its buildings. In the early days of Christchurch, it was an open field known as ‘circus paddock’, used by touring circuses. From 1888, the site was home to a large hall known as the Colosseum, covering the entire length of the present street and the shops on either side. At various times during its lifetime, the Colosseum housed a boot factory, a skating rink and a silent movie theatre amongst other ventures. It hosted events including prize fighting, and speeches from famous politicians of the day including Richard Seddon. However, in 1929 the building was demolished and two years later the New Regent St shopping complex, designed by architect Francis Willis, was officially opened by the Mayor, Mr DG Sullivan. Built during the depression, it was one of the only substantial building projects undertaken in the South Island during the period. According to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, when the 40 shops were offered up for lease in 1931, only three were let because of the bad economic situation. The company responded by leasing the remainder rent-free until they were established. Over the years some units were amalgamated to make larger shops and eventually all passed into individual ownership. Following World War II, New Regent Street was declared a public road. In the early 1990s it was closed to cars with only pedestrian access allowed and a tramway installed later in the decade. As one of the one of the largest examples of Spanish Mission style architecture in New Zealand, the street is listed as a historic area while the buildings carry a category one heritage rating.

New Zealand Historic Places Trust heritage advisor Dave Margetts said the street was even more important to the city now than before the earthquakes. “Its increased value relates to the continuous street frontages of heritage which we have lost across town. It’s probably the only remaining central city heritage street front.” Re:Start director Paul Lonsdale said the street’s reopening would be great for Christchurch. “It’s just another signal that the city is getting back on its feet as best it can and it is really great to see such a well-known heritage street survive and be rejuvenated back into action.” One of the returning businesses will be the Hot Damn! lingerie boutique which had been in the street only a month before the February22 earthquake struck. Although the store had since relocated to the Re:Start Mall, owner Kat McCorkindale said she was looking forward to opening a second store in New Regent St. “I just love it,” she said. “It was our first store so there’s a little bit of an emotional attachment.”

Social housing repairs Last week, Christchurch City Council’s social housing repair process was in the spotlight after the organisation closed three complexes that were below standard. Our Christchurch takes a look at why they were closed and how Council’s social housing unit repairs are progressing. Repairs of Christchurch City Council social housing units are set to ramp up this year, while engineering assessments continue on complexes across the city. By Christmas this year, the Council will have repaired and reopened 70 units that are currently closed due to earthquake damage and another 100 units that people are currently living in will have also undergone repairs. While repairs are carried out on some social housing facilities, engineering assessments will continue on other complexes until March 2014. General Manager Community Services Michael Aitken says most of the Council’s social housing units can still be occupied, with only 469 of its 2649 units currently closed.

After the major earthquakes, the Council focussed on carrying out Detailed Engineering Evaluations (DEEs) on its social housing properties to help it identify complexes that were a risk to residents’ health and safety. It therefore completed DEE assessments on its most damaged properties first, which typically were of more complicated design and larger. Depending on the size of a building, these assessments can take about two months to complete. Like all Council buildings, a social housing complex will be closed if the assessment shows it has a seismic capacity of less than 34 per cent of the New Building Standard (NBS) to ensure the ongoing safety of residents. “The Council’s priority is always the welfare of those living in our social housing units and we’re very conscious of the disruption closing complexes causes. Where we’ve closed complexes our staff have worked closely with residents to identify new homes for them. So far, we have been able to re-house all affected residents,” Mr Aitken says. Mr Aitken says to date six Council units have been repaired and can now be reoccupied. This includes

two four-bedroom units, one three bedroom unit and three onebedroom units in social housing complexes across the city. Many of the other Council units that are currently unable to be occupied are significantly damaged and some may be difficult to repair. Like every homeowner in Canterbury, the Council must also work through complex insurance and EQC processes before its units can be repaired. While the Council has already received a $21 million payout from EQC, it estimates it may cost about double this amount to fix its units. The Council and EQC have therefore agreed to jointly assess Council units to identify the repairs needed and how much they will cost.

One hundred photographs that are entered in the competition will be selected and exhibited at the show, being held in North Hagley Park from 6 – 10 March 2013.

The photography competition is run annually, with entries closing on Friday 15 February 2013. There are two age categories for entrants; one for those under 15 years and a second for those 15 years and over.

NICK Clapham may be a mechanic, but it’s not his vested interest in doing Warrant of Fitness checks every six months rather than every year driving his outrage over changes to the system. “I’ve got a daughter who drives on the roads and I don’t want her to drive an unsafe car, I don’t want her to be approached by anyone in an unsafe car,” Mr Clapham, a workshop foreman for The Mechanics said. The Government has announced six-monthly Warrant of Fitness (WOF) tests will be phased out and only annual checks will be needed for cars registered since 2000. New vehicles will need an initial warrant but won’t have to be re-tested for three years.

Mechanics said yearly checks wouldn’t pick up issues as they developed. “Every six months they have a chance to be repaired and rectified before they develop into much larger issues. For example, the car I’ve just done a warrant on failed on a little cover for the steering which was only a cheap repair. Had it been allowed to go on, the lady could’ve been up for a full steering rack replacement,” Mr Clapham said. The six monthly WOFs were particularly important in Christchurch, where mechanics were dealing with a significant number of suspension repairs due to the earthquakedamaged roads

“Customers don’t really appreciate how far they’ve gone until we fix them (suspension) and they go ‘wow, the car’s a completely different car.’ If things are allowed to develop, cars get into such a state that they do become unsafe,” he said. “A lot of the things we get aren’t sudden catastrophic failure of parts, they’re wearing out of parts that cause erratic behaviours within the handling of cars.” The change will come into force mid-2014 or earlier, and it’s high mileage users who’ll be more prone to damage. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said only 2.4 per cent of crashes had some form of a mechanical defect - the changes saving the country $159 million. “It’s (the changes) going to save New Zealanders quite a lot of money but is not going to impact on the safety,” NZTA South Island director Jim Harland said. The Motor Trade Association (MTA) said it was up to their profession to ensure motorists were safe but the Government had taken that away from them and the public. “I’m disappointed, I guess, but it was

predictable. What perhaps we struggled to comprehend is the balance of possibly, more road deaths versus saving the consumer potentially $50 a year,” MTA business development manager Russell Lane said. The MTA had been campaigning against the change. The change would mostly affect high mileage users, but even low mileage users were at risk. “Our customers aren’t particularly high mileage they’re only 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres a year, but even so with that we are picking up faults every six months on some cars,” Mr Clapham said. The NZTA said police would be targeting enforcement around more minor issues on a greater frequency than they had before, but it was up to every car owner to ensure their vehicle was safe on every journey. The MTA said motorists did not have the skills to do that. “Suspension and tyres are a major part of safety and the average Kiwi wouldn’t go looking under their car to see if there’s something worn or broken in today’s environment,” Mr Lane said.

THIS is the safety message Safekids New Zealand wants schools, parents and caregivers to tell their bicycle-riding children as they return to school this month. “Cycling is a healthy activity and bicycles are the first mode of transport for many Kiwi children,” Safekids New Zealand director Ann Weaver said. “However, schools and parents must take action by ensuring safety comes first when their children hop on their bikes.” According to Safekids, approximately 487 children are hospitalised and two children die from cycling-related injuries in New Zealand

each year. International research has also shown approximately two-thirds of hospital admissions among child cyclists are for head injuries and three-quarters of deaths among injured child cyclists are also from head injuries. This is why wearing safety helmets when cycling, scooting, skating or skateboarding was very important. “Aside from being a law, wearing helmets when cycling reduces the likelihood of severe brain injury by 74 per cent. The evidence is clear, wearing helmets saves lives,” Ms Weaver said.

TO say Graham Robertson enjoys cricket would be to do him an injustice. He loves it. The Hoon Hay resident’s passion for the game has seen him set up his own team, transform his garage into a clubroom, build batting nets in his backyard and keep a logbook of every match he has ever played since 1972. And that’s just the start. As of last Wednesday, the 59-year-old had clocked up 13,571 runs and 1545 wickets over 354 games. His team, the City Eagles, plays in Grade 4B in the Christchurch Metro Cricket competition, held on Saturdays. He had thought of retiring to a more social version of the game this year, but he wanted to see if the team could win one more season, following their previous two victories.

“We’re trying to get the hat-trick…it’s fun time next season.” He started playing when he was 15 and when he was 18 he was inspired by an older player to keep a record of his team’s games, something which over the years has come in handy – he can set his mates right should they make lofty claims about their playing prowess. When he married Sharon more than 30 years ago, the keen sports fan agreed to a compromise. “When I got married I told my wife I was playing cricket and I wouldn’t play in the winter sports.” In the past 40 years he has taken only three cricket seasons off. He loves the game’s unpredictability and is not ashamed to admit he has been out for a duck more than once.

“It’s just how you feel on the day.” Over the years he has played for several clubs, including Riccarton, and the Hornby club with the late Ishwar Ganda. He started his own team in 1998, which later morphed into the City Eagles in 2002. Aside from sport, he is a courier driver for rural post in the mornings and looks after his grandchildren in the afternoons, enjoying a more relaxed pace of life having spent years working long hours. He wonders if he will ever stop playing his favourite game. “I don’t know, I turn 60 next year, I was thinking I might get my 15,000 runs. As long as the body holds out I will run around. EARLY last month flames ripped through Beckenham School, gutting the library and another room, but the school’s already moving forward. Classes started back last week and their demolished library is a constant reminder of what happened over the holiday break. “It was certainly not the way we planned to start the year, and really devastating to see a building that’s a real treasure in our school having to be demolished,” Beckenham School principal Sandy Hastings said. The empty site where the library once stood is just metres from the playground, which is packed with students every lunchtime. “It’s really cool to be back but it’s weird not having the library there,” 11-year-old James Hanlon said. Over the past 15 years the school had built up a collection of more than 7300 books worth $140,000 but every one of them was ruined in the January 10 fire. Police have spoken to a child in relation to the incident, and referred them to Police Youth Aid. Because of the young person’s age they could not be held criminally liable. Ms Hastings said the child’s family was distraught, police were working to support them and the child was receiving counselling. “We’re moving forward and we’ve got a temporary library set up and we’ve had wonderful support from both our school community and the wider community in helping bring this together,” Ms Hastings said. Their new library is in a converted classroom and is very small compared to the former building. The empty shelves are slowly filling up and hundreds of books have already been donated. “It’s amazing how many books we’ve got in the past two weeks; we had nothing and now we have about 800 and there’s boxes coming in each day,” 12-year-old Sophie van Soest said. The National Library is lending two boxes of books for every classroom so the students have something to read at the start of the school year and they’ll issue new books until the school’s library is fully functional again. The school has more than 400 students. Barrington Paper Plus is selling books for the library at cost price and when the school gets its insurance payout they’ll be able to buy discounted books too. The school’s long-term goal is to move their library out of the cramped classroom and into a more permanent location. “We’re already in discussions with the Ministry of Education looking at the needs of our whole school and how we move forward and build something that’s going to take us into the future,” Ms Hastings said.

Māori trade education tradition continues BETWEEN the 1950s and the 1980s thousands of Māori boys and girls from all over New Zealand moved to Christchurch to learn a trade. For most of those students, Rehua Marae was their new home. At the same marae 30 years later, more than 60 new Māori trades students have been awarded full scholarships to start on their trades pathway - on the He Toki kite Rika programme. He Toki is the Māori trades training course led by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu in partnership with Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) and Hawkins Construction. It was launched in 2011 to up-skill Māori for

roles in Canterbury’s earthquake recovery. Ngāi Tahu Kaiwhakahaere Sir Mark Solomon said he was proud of the commitment Māori were making to be a part of the recovery. “It is fantastic to see Māori stepping up and getting ready to be part of the rebuild.” Sir Mark said enrolling in He Toki was the first part of their journey of becoming the next generation of Māori trades leaders. “We want these students to go on to become the supervisors, the project managers, the foremen. It’s about leadership.” He Toki was launched last June and more than 150 Māori have completed the course, with 89 of those students having found work and the remainder going into further training.

THE Canterbury Business Association (CBA) has its eye on a central city site for a proposed new international hub containing a market, food stalls, performance venues, shops, restaurants and language schools. CBA chief executive Taz Mukorombindo said they were due to make a presentation to the Christchurch City Council on February 21, asking to use a council-owned 7000-squaremetre site on Welles Street, between Colombo and Manchester streets. The site is among those controversially bought by the council in 2008 from property developer David Henderson and was earmarked for mixed-use residential development. It’s close to Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, the current and future bus exchanges and the Re:Start Mall, which Mr Mukorombindo said would bring vibrancy back to the central city and support small business owners. “Within walking distance you can have a much bigger experience in our rebuild.” It’s also just outside the south frame in the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority’s blueprint, a deliberate choice. “We don’t have enough leverage to play with the big boys in the central city,” Mr Mukorombindo said. He is working on the project with a group of architects, lawyers, builders, designers and researchers who are contributing their skills. Conrad Stoffels, who is voluntarily assisting

with project management, said it would be approached in two stages: phase one would be a market with an international food court and entertainment area, phase two would be the larger buildings like language schools. Mr Mukorombindo said a large number of migrants were self-employed in small business and the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 had a big impact on the livelihoods of those which were located in the central city. He said working as a collective was attractive to those businesses because it took away one of the biggest barriers to rebuilding – finding a location. They already had about 35 expressions of interest. The CBA hoped to come to an arrangement with the council for a peppercorn rental, similar to what has happened with the nearby EPIC hub. “Best dressed, first in is what they are saying so we are working hard to make sure our proposal really stacks up and we want to show commercial viability with a strong social benefit,” Mr Mukorombindo said. He says the hub would be a destination for locals and tourists, not just the migrant community, and include local businesses and cottage industries, especially in the markets. “We are definitely creating a destination and not a migrant zone or an ethnic centre or Chinatown or any of the other things people think we might be proposing.”

such journeys. Silver Linings’ success is due to Russell’s great script, and to his superb cast that give their all bringing it to life. Bradley Cooper and ‘It Girl’ Jennifer Lawrence play Pat and Tiffany, and their chemistry is obvious, effortless and without cliché. But even these careerdefining performances would have been hampered without equally great performances from the entire supporting cast. Special mention must go to Jacki Weaver (matriarch-from-Hell in Animal Kingdom) who plays Pat’s mother and to Robert De Niro as his father, Pat Snr, (a role that thankfully rescues him from playing yet another tedious Focker

father-figure). The film has been nominated for eight Oscars, including the rare honour of nominations in all four acting categories, and this really is a testament not only to the class of the actors involved but also to Russell’s film-making abilities. Silver Linings Playbook is that rare film that succeeds equally as both comedy and drama. It works because like these characters we all have flaws, about which we sometimes make light, but with which we have to live every day.



SUMNER landscape designer and self-confessed “garden nerd” Scotty Fletcher has come up with an innovative idea for his entry in this year’s Ellerslie Flower Show – using plants from red-zoned gardens. “It started when (neighbour) Lesley Murdoch asked me how to take a cutting from a rose she wanted to keep from her garden in Heberden Avenue. She had moved after her house was red-zoned because a huge rock had fallen on it. “I told her I could remove the whole rose for her, and in the end I removed about 20 roses. Instead of payment, I asked if I could have the whole garden, and she agreed. “After viewing many of my friends’ red-zone homes and gardens around the community, and seeing their faces as they talked about their memories of watching their kids playing in the garden and seeing the smiles on their faces, it dawned on me that these people needed as much help with this as possible. The next thing I know I’m bringing in plant after plant after plant into my house for storage.” The plants were removed before the properties were taken over by Cera, Mr Fletcher said, and he got the OK from the demolition companies before entering the-zoned properties. Although he went in at his own risk, he “would risk everything for a beautiful plant”. He said if he hadn’t removed the plants, they would probably have died by now, or been shipped to dump sites. His own garden, dubbed the ‘plant orphanage’, is now filled with plants in pots ready for re-homing into their owners’ new properties, where he will redesign their gardens. NEW Zealand farmers need to become more biodiverse in order to save the declining bee population, according to University of Canterbury (UC) research. UC biological scientist Jason Tylianakis said losing the bee population would be devastating to New Zealand’s economy which exports about 80 per cent of food crops and up to three quarters require pollination. Bees are worth an estimated $5 billion to the export economy. Honeybee numbers are on the rise with diseases like Varroa Mite and colony collapse disorder being managed, but for the wild native bees, of which there are 20,000 species, it’s different. Mr Tylianakis said we should think more broadly about management of hives and how to deal with the loss of honeybees and how native bee species might be used if honeybees become extinct. His research found measurable increases in crop yields just by having a diverse array of different bee species to pollinate crops. “It’s critical to manage them in our whole agricultural landscape so to have areas that are not sprayed with pesticides and to generally reduce our pesticide use where possible, as well as have nesting sites and habitats where bees can reproduce and where they can find food when a crop isn’t flowering nearby.” Mr Tylianakis said it was up to farmers to be responsible in the way they farmed. “There are already farmers leading the way in this regard and wine growers as well. People are encouraging biodiversity on their properties

and trying to do things in a more sustainable way and support species like our bees.” However, the Government needed incentives to entice more farmers to become biodiversity-friendly. “Unfortunately in New Zealand this is very much dependant on their goodwill. We as a society need to get behind those efforts.” In some European countries farmers were subsidised by the government to farm more sustainably and to keep natural areas within their farmed landscapes. Federated Farmers bee industry group chairman John Hartnell said there was funding available for farmers to encourage the reproduction of bees. “Government subsidies are fine but we have funds available in New Zealand for bee research and all that sort of stuff. The expectation is the industry pays a dollar and the Government pays a dollar so those funds are there if the industry wants to take them up.” But researchers did not believe that was enough and there needed to be a shift within the farming culture. Mr Tylianakis said it was difficult to convince farmers to forgo a yield benefit by setting aside some land. He said there needed to be a way to compensate for that loss. “I think many farmers do want to do the right thing so if we can remove the economic impediments to that I think we could potentially see some progress.”

Parents learn new skills

Commemoration event planned PLANNING is underway by Christchurch City Council for a Civic Memorial Service to commemorate the second anniversary of the February 22, 2011 Canterbury earthquake. The memorial service will be in Latimer Square at noon on Friday, February 22. The service, cohosted by the Anglican ChristChurch Cathedral, will be for the community and will include one minute’s silence at 12.51pm. Mayor Bob Parker said two years on, the effect of the earthquake was still being felt in the daily lives of all Cantabrians. “The commemorative service will be a time where we can gather as a community to remember our community’s strength and kindness in the days following the earthquake and to take heart in our city’s future.” Other events led by various groups will also be held around the city at that time.

PARENTING can be a challenge at the best of times, but for Deaf parents with hearing children it comes with an extra set of challenges. About 185 people gathered at Living Springs near Governors Bay last month for the New Zealand Deaf and Hearing Impaired Parents Conference and Children’s camp, organised by Deaf Aotearoa. The aims of the camp were to bring the families together so they could share their experiences, have fun and learn from each other about different ways to deal with the challenges that arise, such as helping with homework and communicating with their children’s hearing friends, camp founder Monica Leach said. Deaf Aotearoa was assisted by Jetstar, which

donated $30,000 through its Flying Start programme. The grant was $15,000 in cash and $15,000 in flights and covered most of the camp’s costs as well as allowing 20 of the 56 families to attend free of charge, something for which the families were grateful as January was an expensive time of year, following Christmas holidays and with schools resuming. Christchurch-based community relations officer for Deaf Aotearoa Victoria Walters, mum to seven-year-old Isabella, said children of Deaf adults, called CODA, grew up in two worlds, the Deaf world and the hearing world. They also grew up bilingual, learning how to sign and how to speak.

“It’s about making parents aware not to put extra pressure or responsibilities on their children to do things like make phone calls. We have technology to do that,” she said. One of the camp speakers was Claire Harker, who is hearing, grew up with Deaf parents and married to Dwayne Johnson, who is Deaf. They have two boys aged three and five. She was glad to be sharing with other parents. “It was good for me to let them know my experience growing up,” she said. A TEAM of young Christchurch gymnasts has come away from its tour of Australia with five medals including three golds. Charlotte Sullivan, 14, Hanna Malloch, 14, Courtney McGregor, 14, and Millie Williamson, 13, competed for the New Zealand Junior International Team at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney last month. They were up against Australia, China and Great Britain. The team competed strongly and they all posted personal bests on both days of the event but were not able to take home a medal competing against the two world powers of gymnastics, China and Great Britain. The team was joined by Christchurch teammate Tara Purvis and headed over to the Perth International Challenge where they competed against South Africa, Australia and the Western Australia Institute of Sport. The results kept improving, and they took top honours coming out as team winners. Millie Williamson scored her personal best again with a 49.35 to be the individual champion while Courtney McGregor was third. Millie added two bronze medals on Bars and Floor to round out the haul. “The Australian tour was an important start of the Commonwealth Games 2014 campaign and it was wonderful to get some good competition so close to home,” head coach Jozsef Ferencz said. “It was well worth sacrificing our summer holidays, we were rewarded.” The gymnasts and coaches worked hard even during Christmas and New Year, clocking up on average 32 hours of training per week. “For the club it is very pleasing to see these results against Commonwealth Countries and shows that our standing in the international gymnastics world is well deserved and growing,” Christchurch School of Gymnastics chief executive Avril Enslow said. The girls all qualified for the New Zealand Junior team after Nationals in October last year and have a busy year ahead of them as they line up important competitions in 2014. These will include the Youth Olympic Games in China, Pacific Rim Competition in Canada, Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and World Championships in Nanning, China.

Garrison, Avery and Wright win at croquet champs TOBY Garrison won the singles title, while M Avery and M Wright took the doubles honours in the New Zealand Centennial Championships of croquet held in Christchurch last week. The tournament was held at five Christchurch clubs – United (Hagley Park), Barrington, Cashmere, Fendalton and St Martins. A total of 36 players contested the singles event with the field being split after two days. The top 12 players then faced off in the

knock out rounds while the rest competed in a separate plate competition. The doubles field of 76 teams was similarly whittled down with the top 32 teams going into a knockout phase while the rest of the teams again went into a separate plate competition. Toby Garrison beat Aaron Westerby in the singles final, winning two games to one. Although he lost the first game 21-26, he took the next two games 26-16 and 26-6.

Christchurch is still in demand for big events IT appears that regardless of the earthquake events over the past couple of years, Christchurch still has the facilities to attract some major sporting events. Two of the stand-out supporters are lawn bowls and golf. The first national body to put their hand up and say “we are going to go to Christchurch” was golf. In a tangible act of support, New Zealand Golf brought the combined Men’s and Women’s Amateur Golf Championship to the Russley Golf Club early in 2011. What a boost it was to see a major sporting body being prepared to back the belief that Canterbury was in fact up and running, be it with considerable challenges. Cantabrians welcomed the occasion and even though accommodation was at a premium they opened their homes to billet competitors and the support staff. Sure there were nerves amongst the visitors but once they arrived here, the warmth of the welcome dispelled those concerns and the event was a huge success. Following that ‘toe in the water’, golf followed this up with sticking with their pledge to bring the 2011 New Zealand Men’s Open Tournament

The same can be said for the sport of lawn bowls and their commitment to the Garden City. They have announced that the Burnside Bowling Club will host World Championship Bowls every November for the next four years! What a compliment for the club and the fact that whatever we have had to endure we have the ability to produce facilities that are seen to be the best in the world. Let’s face it, if they weren’t we would not be awarded them on a sympathy vote. What this must mean is that administrators in other sports must not hide behind the effects of the earthquakes and that they should back themselves to strive to gain top line events for this city. As summer crops are coming to an end, get ready for round two of the planting season.

CROP planning

Rachel Vogan suggests preparing your soil for your next round of crops. AS the summer cropping season and harvest is nearing its end, it’s the perfect time to be replenishing the soil with nutrients and goodies ready for the next lot of planting and seed sowing. Many crops will have done their dash now; courgettes will be turning into marrows as quick as you can say “wheelbarrow” and peas will be collapsing after the duress of a heavy cropping season. As you pull out these crops, the remnants can be added to your compost bin. Initially, as the crops come out of the ground, the foliage seems quite bulky but leave it to wilt in the sun for a few days and you will find it takes up far less room. Even better, munch the foliage by running it over with the lawn mower with the catcher on; this makes the pieces smaller and makes it so much easier to pick up and put in the compost bin. Set your mower on a high setting to avoid the stems clogging up the mower. Replenish the soil and the rewards will come. A car cannot run without any fuel, humans can’t survive for long without food and water and neither can plants. Plants require large amounts of nutrients and water to thrive and survive. After each season, you need to replenish and reinvigorate your soil by adding in some essential plant goodies to give your next round of crops the best possible chance. Start by digging over the soil thoroughly. This is best done with a fork when the soil is dry and friable. Blend in well-rotted, homemade compost if it’s available, or buy pre-packaged bags from the

garden centre, spread over the surface of the soil and blend it in. Bags of sheep pellets are a good alternative here and the worms love them. What’s more, they are very convenient to buy and easy to apply.. Water deeply to put valuable moisture into the soil and to allow the nutrients to blend into the root zone before planting. In poor soils, it’s a good idea to blend in something like Saturaid to enable to soil to hold on to more moisture. This product works like a sponge; it allows poor soils to rehydrate more quickly and enhances crops performance.

Top five crops to plant now

Cabbage: Plant as many as you can fit in. The wonderfully sweet ‘Savoy’ cabbage is a winner in salads, stir-fries and slaws. It will willingly keep growing if you harvest a few outer leaves at a time. ‘Dutch Red’ is the pick of cabbage for those who like fancy red slaws, whereas ‘Little Cutie’ is a neat dwarf variety ideal for pots and containers. Silverbeet: Another outstanding all-yearround garden performer. Plant it everywhere, in gardens beds, the vege garden or maybe around your letter box. ‘Bright Lights’ will win you over with its red, yellow and green leaves and stems. Beetroot: This topnotch crop ticks two main boxes. Being a hardy root crop, it will grow right through winter and before the roots are harvested, the leaves can be enjoyed in salads and sandwiches. ‘Bonny Baby’ is a fabulous option for pots and containers; with its smaller beets, you can fit at least two or three punnets in a decent-sized barrel or pot. ‘Red Torpedo’, with its tapered, carrot-like roots, appeals to those who like a longer beet.

Brussel sprouts: It’s too late to plant seeds now but you are in with a good chance if you can find some Growfresh ‘Maxim’ seedlings at the garden centre. Allow a good 60cm between plants and make sure you replenish the soil before planting; they won’t crop for you unless you look after them. The results totally outweigh the effort where this crop is concerned. Kohl rabi: This is a tasty and interesting vege crop to try this autumn. Plant a few punnets and you will surprised at how quickly this will become your go-to vegetable crop. The leaves can be added to stews, salads and stir-fries and the plump, tennis ball-sized roots are wonderful grated into slaws and vegetable bakes.

Mr O’Sullivan said the club was keen to be “at the forefront of re-establishing facilities for the South New Brighton area”. “We have always had a strong association to the South New Brighton area – especially as this was where we started and so many of our members have come from this area over the years,” he said. “We have a solid core of members and a focused committee determined to get on with the job. We only need the green light from the council on some appropriate land to begin investing in a new sports facility for South New Brighton,” he said.

Students back from life-changing trip SCHOOL went back last week and 14 girls from years 10 to 12 at Rangi Ruru are still buzzing after a life-changing experience following four weeks in Southern India and Rajasthan. Together with two school leaders and World Challenge expedition leader the group spent their time experiencing a mix of adventure, endurance, excitement, extreme temperatures and diverse culture. One of the most rewarding parts of the trip was the 10-day project, said staff member Ali McQueen, which involved renovating Surakiapatti School near Sempatti, India. The girls and leaders cleared sites, built a new kitchen, painted school buildings and worked and played with the children. Ms McQueen said the whole school was very proud of the girls, who prepared for the trip for 18 months. “They’re all a very harmonious group who worked co-operatively and developed excellent leadership, problem-solving and decision-making skills along the way.” Ms McQueen said they became very involved in the local community and made a real difference to the lives of the local children.

Year 11 student Georgie Staples said Christmas in India was a really different experience. “We went to a midnight Christmas service, had Christmas dinner, which was lovely, but we weren’t initially sure what it was. A work-day at the school was interesting and the whole thing about

being away from home in an unknown world was mind-blowing,” she said. Ali McQueen said the trip had provided unforgettable memories of a shared adventure, a greater appreciation of our world, and was a real privilege for all involved.

Jessica Schaap IAN Wilkinson from Bishopdale has received the premier Papanui Beautifying Association summer garden award. Papanui Beautifying Association president Peter Berry said he received his award for his use of colour. When Mr Wilkinson first moved to his home 18 years ago the garden was all “bark and plastic”. But it has gradually been transformed to what it is now. He first entered the awards in 1996 and has won awards in the past but this is the first time he has received the premier award and as many awards in one competition. Mr Wilkinson said he has had the time this year to put more effort into his garden, since he has retired, and has improved the lawn and planted more plants. “I think it’s got a bit of character, it’s still an ongoing thing, before it was a bit bare,” he said.
