“I feel that, despite the style of packaging, people will continue smoking, and I believe that some teenagers will start smoking because of peer pressure. Removing the brand would make no difference at all.”
“I don’t think it is going to deter people from smoking. They will keep doing it regardless.”
“I think that they should do away with cigarettes altogether.”
“Yes, I think it is a good idea to discourage smoking by making it less glamorous.”
“I don’t think it will make a difference. If you smoke, you smoke. You don’t stop buying fish and chips, for instance, because they are sold in plain packaging.”

AN expensive, state-of-the-art portable facility is helping police keep on top of their communications. Police Inspector Kieren Kortegast said the new mini communications centre was currently based at the Christchurch South Police Station in Beckenham where it was being used to dispatch patrol cars. “It’s never been done before but now we’ve

garden gnome missing, someone complaining their pizza had gone cold and a bride who got oil on her frock. Inspector Kortegast said people needed to realise that 111 was only for emergency situations such as when life or property was at risk, when an offence was happening or had only just happened and the offender was leaving the scene, or for major issues such as a tree coming down on a main road. “We do things politely; it’s about giving a service but at the same time it is very frustrating for the staff. There are other callers waiting in the line and one of those could be a life threatening situation.” Deliberate prank calls could result in a fine, he said. However, it was also important that people with a genuine emergency to report not be put off. “If in doubt, don’t think about it, ring 111.”

MORE than two thirds of 111 calls are a waste of police time, a police communications manager says. Police Southern Communications Centre manager Inspector Kieren Kortegast said that of the 2.7 million 111 calls taken by Telecom every year, 67 per cent were not genuine emergency calls. “They could be children playing on the phone, a big issue is around people bumping their cell phones in their pockets and dialling 111, there’s other people who play on their phones at times just doing stupid things,” he said. “Every time a Telecom operator or a police, fire or ambulance operator is tied up on a call you could be preventing someone else getting through, which could be a life-threatening situation.” Some of the “weird and wacky” 111 calls received had included a person reporting their

CPIT to go Smokefree THE Christchurch Polytech Institute of Technology (CPIT) is going Smokefree from January 1, 2013. The policy will apply to CPIT campuses, car parks and CPIT vehicles and affects all staff, students and visitors. CPIT chief executive Kay Giles said the policy was designed to support staff wellbeing. “We are committed to ensuring a safe working and learning environment free from the proven harmful effects of second-hand smoke. Although smoking is known as a major
cause of illness and death, some people may choose to maintain this habit, but for those who want to use the Smokefree deadline as motivation to quit, we will help as much as we can.” CPIT supports the government vision of a Smokefree Aotearoa by 2025. The institute’s smokefree policy is a collaboration between the CPIT Council, management, student association (CPSA), human resources, health and safety and facilities management.
A TRUSTED FAMILY BUSINESS
FOR OVER 35 YEARS Grab yourself a bargain! Richmond Discount Furniture, dubbed by a customer “the best little furniture shop in town” is a place where customers enjoy popping in on a regular basis and finding themselves a bargain normally priced well below other retail stores. The family business has been in operation for 37 years and now that Roy Kendall has well and truly retired the business is managed by both Rob and Alison Kendall. According to Alison, “we are able to source some great factory specials for our customers and calling in on a regular basis is the way to grab yourself a bargain.” “We have a great selection of factory redundant and factory second beds and mattress sets, also a selection of new furniture, including bedroom furniture, entertainment units, bookcases, coffee tables and buffets to choose from. Because real bargains come up from time to time, “just popping in” is a habit likely to pick up some of those bargains. It also means that customers’ good opinions of the discount prices make word-of-mouth a strong feature of Richmond Discount Furniture’s business practice at their Stanmore Road store. Approached since the big earthquakes to lease part of their store, Richmond Discount Furniture has given up the corner site at Stanmore Road and Draper Street, but hasn’t moved very far and still has a good sized showroom next door and a big yard in behind for customer parking. There’s also customer parking at the front door on Stanmore Road. Richmond Discount Furniture also offers the choice of delivery, for one of the lowest delivery fees in town, but customers are more than welcome to collect their own purchases, easily done by using the yard at back of the shop, with the entrance off Draper Street. Bargains may change often in Richmond Discount Furniture’s display window alongside the main entrance at 233 Stanmore Road. The regular flow of furniture makes it a good idea to check out the store regularly. Rob and Alison would like to thank their many customers who have supported their family business over the years and they look forward to serving them and new customers in the future. Richmond Discount Furniture is open Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm, and on Saturday 10am – 1pm. Phone them on 389 0536

Singing away quake anniversary blues GIVING happier memories of September 4 was the aim of a community concert held at the Wainoni Methodist Church on Tuesday. The ‘Eastenders Endurance’ concert was organised by Betty Chapman, the community coordinator for the Wainoni Avonside Community Services Trust, to mark the second anniversary of the September 2010
earthquake. She said the aim was for people to go home happy and it was also a way of thanking the approximately 40 community groups who had helped people in the eastern suburbs. About 100 local residents turned out for the concert which featured guest speakers Christchurch East MP Leanne Dalziel and
Mayor Bob Parker. Student Volunteer Army founder Sam Johnson played the piano and sang a piece from Phantom of the Opera and there were also performances from Kaiapoi duo Fragments of Grace, Rachel Harré and Frank Malone, and Lincoln-based singer songwriter June Burney. Photos: Gilbert Wealleans

Samantha Early FIREFIGHTERS and their supporters will gather on Tuesday, September 11, to remember the victims and heroes of the 2001 World Trade Centre terrorist attacks and show appreciation for emergency services in Christchurch. The annual memorial service at the Firefighters Reserve on the corner of Madras and Kilmore streets is being organised by the American Club of Christchurch and the New Zealand Fire Service. American Club of Christchurch board member Susan Jackson said the experience Christchurch had of the devastation caused by the earthquakes made them appreciate what Americans and especially New Yorkers went through with the World Trade Centre tragedy back in 2001. “We also have a greater appreciation of how much we rely on our local dedicated first responders and how much they mean in our community. This is an opportunity to salute those who have worked so magnificently and selflessly. They have worked long shifts with little rest and with little time to attend to their own families’ needs,” she said.
Fire Service station officer Murray Jamieson, who will be the master of ceremonies for the memorial, said the day was significant to firefighters worldwide because 343 of them lost their lives in the World Trade Centre attacks and many more had since died due to lung complications. Mr Jamieson said firefighters in Christchurch fulfilled their duties in a traumatic time after the earthquakes. He described firefighters as a brotherhood and sisterhood and said the memorial would commemorate every one of them in history who died doing their duty. “There are firefighters from the United States that will be watching this and it gets them in the hearts to know we down in the farthest country from them are still having a memorial.” Everyone is welcome to attend the outdoor ceremony, which will start at 11am on Tuesday. A piper from the St Andrews College Pipe Band will signal the end of the proceedings, which are expected to take about 20 to 30 minutes.

Working together to end discharge into the Waimakariri River
Partnership for Christchurch Coastal Pathway Project The work is starting following a community partnership between the Christchurch City Council and Christchurch Coastal Pathway Group (CPG). Mayor Bob Parker says, “The Council, in seeking an appropriate way to support this project, has undertaken to provide initial funding and project management. The project budget for this stage is $50,000 which has already been allocated for this purpose in the Annual Plan. “A desire to see a recreational asset that speaks to the spirit of Christchurch come to fruition and to ensure CPG can meet funding application deadlines meant the project planning had to get underway now.

Earthquake Awards nominations close soon Nominations for the second round of the Christchurch Earthquake Awards will close on 21 September. The earthquake awards were presented for the first time in February 2012 and are being held a second time to give people who were previously unaware of the awards an opportunity to nominate a worthy candidate. The awards are to honour people who undertook acts of kindness, service or heroism during the earthquakes. For further information or to nominate someone visit www.ccc.govt.nz/ civicawards or pick up a nomination form from your closest Council Service Centre.

have invested in construction work to provide the alternative discharge route. Damage to Christchurch’s infrastructure from the earthquakes extended the timeframe for the Belfast pipe closure until July 30 this year.
The move will have a positive impact on the Waimakariri River’s water quality as it was the last industrial discharge into the waterway. Fishing and recreation activities will be able to take place at all times except when the river is in flood.
The Pathway will let residents and visitors explore our beautiful coast.
Work on a master plan and feasibility study for the proposed six-kilometre Christchurch Coastal Pathway is about to get underway.
Silver Fern Farms, Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury are celebrating the end of a successful project to replace a pipe discharging treated wastewater into the Waimakariri River.

LOCAL rock climbers are hoping more of their favourite crags will reopen this summer after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 reduced the Port Hills from a climbers’ Mecca to a paucity of options. Most of the Port Hills areas previously frequented by rock climbers have been closed due to safety issues posed by extensive quake damage to the rock bluffs. The majority of such places are administered by the Christchurch City Council, while others are managed by the Department of Conservation or privately owned. New Zealand Alpine Club (NZAC) general manager Sam Newton said the organisation had formed an advisory group, which was advocating for the opening of six targeted crags. These were the “low-hanging fruit” – areas thought to be easier to reopen. “We’d love to see them open by the summer because some of the beauty of Christchurch [for climbers] prior to the quake was you could have after work cragging,” Mr Newton said. “There are some open now but we’d love to see more. “A lot of very good climbers from across New Zealand have moved to Christchurch for the sake of rock climbing.” Many local climbers were now travelling more frequently to crags on Banks Peninsula, inland Canterbury or the West Coast to pursue their hobby. Beckenham resident and keen climber Lindsay Main said he didn’t often climb in the Port Hills any more as there was so little open to the public. “Primarily I have been going over to crags on Banks Peninsula, which in some cases are not at all affected by the quakes.” Christchurch City Council team leader regional parks operations Kay Holder said

many crags such as Castle Rock, Barnett Park and John Britten were too severely damaged to carry out any further evaluation at this time and would remain closed for the foreseeable future. “We have provided some updates to the Alpine Club and will continue to update key groups on any progress and developments as we carry on with evaluations and remediation work. “We appreciate the patience and understanding of those that are keen to get back into the parks; our primary concern is public safety for those that use these areas. The process is complex and does take time, so we ask that people do follow that signage that is in place.” One success had been the reopening of Cattlestop Crag in April after geotechnical inspections and hand scaling to remove loose and fractured rocks were carried out.

Chris Cleave B-boy events showcase art and skill talks cycling, controversy

Chelsea Shover
Writing reality: British novelist Chris Cleave holds Gold, his most recent book, published in time for the London Olympics. Photo: Chelsea Shover
IN his most recent novel, Gold, Mr Cleave tackled the subject of Olympic cycling. To research the book, he found an elite cycling team that would let him train with them. Stressing that he was by no means an elite athlete himself, Mr Cleave said going through the same regimen helped him gain a deeper understanding of the athletes’ lives and psyches. “I think of what I do as halfway between fiction and reportage,” he said. In writing Gold, he wanted to go beyond the questions sportscasters generally ask athletes in post-competition glory. “I prefer to ask them a question at six in the morning two years ahead [of the Olympics],” he said, such as “What happened to you when you were six years old that made you hate losing?” In his previous work, he gained a reputation for tackling controversial territory. “My stuff is like Marmite, you either love it or hate it,” he said. His novel The Other Hand told the story of a Nigerian asylum seeker caught up in the UK immigration system. He interviewed two dozen refugees and learned about the ongoing conflict in Nigeria, where Western oil companies drill. People are killed, displaced, and many end up in the UK seeking asylum. The book is shocking, and public reactions to it have covered the range from very positive to strongly against. But most importantly to Mr Cleave, it has got people talking about asylum seekers. “I don’t want to have the last word,” he said. “I’m happy if more people start talking about it.”

it is about patience. Current world champion Roxrite, 30, started breaking 17 years ago. “I did it full-time then, but it wasn’t a job,” he said. Then, slowly, he started winning and gaining sponsorships. Yalda Ghods, who works with the Red Bull crew, said New Zealand hadn’t hosted an international contest in a decade and seldom drew international teachers. The turnout to the free workshops was encouraging. “If you don’t give the scene a vision for the future to dance, they stop developing,” she said. “Hopefully we can come every year.” The two Christchurch b-boys – Akorn (Aron Mahuika) and Grub D (David McCavitt), both of Common Ground Crew – were eliminated in the first knockout round at the Asia Pacific championships. But representing New Zealand again on the world stage, they may have helped elevate their art in the eyes of their hometown.

British author Chris Cleave was in Christchurch last week for the city’s first literary festival since the earthquakes. Chelsea Shover talked to him about his intensive research and the polarised responses to his work.
LAST week was a big week for b-boys in Christchurch. Dozens of b-boys and a few b-girls turned up for a workshop with worldclass b-boys, or breakers on the Tuesday. Over the weekend, Christchurch’s best b-boys went head to head with Asia Pacific’s best in New Zealand’s first world qualifier event. On their way to judge the Red Bull BC One event in Auckland, Pelezinho of Brazil and Roxrite from the United States taught workshops at Chrystal Palace in Richmond. Red Bull flowed freely for teachers and staff – students were too busy trying handstands and cartwheel sequences to need the energy boost – and music filled the dance studio with sirens and hip hop beats. Members of Christchurchbased Common Ground Crew practised in the background as Pelezinho taught the first workshop, incorporating elements of samba and capoeira, a Brazilian martial art. The workshop served as a trial for prospective crew members, Justin Castle, a full-time EQC contractor and member of Common Ground, said. Popularly called breakdancing or breaking, b-boying is about art, strategy and battle. According to former Common Ground member Jared Graham, “B-boying is the art of it, from the tiny little moves to the crazy spinning.” The difference in name, at least in New Zealand, pointed to a general attitude about the dance that Mr Graham said remained prevalent in Christchurch. Mr Graham moved to Sydney three months ago, but was back in town visiting his old crew. Crossing the ditch has proven profitable for Mr Graham. In Christchurch, he said, he was lucky to make $22.50 an hour, one hour per week teaching b-boying. In Sydney, he said teachers command a minimum of $60 per hour, and can make $700 or $800 for a workshop. He makes $100 an hour and can find more gigs thanks to government sponsorship and more respect for the discipline. Of course, it’s not all about the money, and

Sticking it to the advertising signs
Signs of the times: The words ‘illegal advertising’ and ‘visual pollution’ have been spotted plastered over signs hung on lampposts, fences and trees around Christchurch during the past week. These altered signs were spotted in Carlton Mill Road and Rossall Street, but many more were hung on trees in the median strip on Bealey Avenue. Plasterer Kelven James Crawford, who had one of his signs targeted, said he didn’t ask for permission to put it up, but he was just trying to get the word out about the service he was offering. “I’ve seen that many signs around Christchurch and the way Canterbury is at the moment we want Canterbury people in work.” When alerted to the ‘illegal advertising’ sticker on Monday, Mr Crawford told Mainland Press he would take his sign down the next day. The Christchurch City Council’s manager of inspections and enforcement, Gary Lennan, said enforcement officers still investigated complaints in relation to signage when it did not comply with the Christchurch City Plan or bylaw. “However, we are mindful of the difficult business environment post-earthquakes and the need for businesses to advertise either their return

Youth whet appetite for water management “Much of the work being done by each of Canterbury’s 10 zone committees on improving local water management will benefit our children and their children. For this reason it is vital we get young people involved in the process now and ensure they have the information and the interest to contribute.” On the first day of the hui the nine participants, from Hillmorton High School, Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti, CPIT, Lincoln University and the University of Canterbury, undertook a full-day field trip to visit significant
NINE Christchurch youths aged between 14 and 24 recently attended a two-day hui to get involved in local water management. The hui was organised by Environment Canterbury (ECan) in conjunction with the Canterbury Water Christchurch – West Melton Zone Committee. ECan youth engagement team leader Sian Carvell said the goals and values of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) required young people to be involved.
sites for water management in Christchurch and hear from local experts. The sites included the Waimakariri River, Te Huingi Manu – oxidation ponds reserve and the Groynes. Speakers included representatives from Environment Canterbury, the Canterbury District Health Board, the Ihutai Trust and Ngai Tahu. Following the field trip the students went to Rehua Marae to reflect on the days’ activities and learn about Ngai Tahu values, before staying the night on the marae. The next day the group was welcomed by

Environment Canterbury Commissioner David Caygill and heard from the Ministry of Youth Development on how to get the voice of youth heard. Zone Committee chair Ian Fox said the opportunity to get young people involved in local water management decisions was invaluable. “The feedback we received from participants was well thought out and it will be top-of-mind as we look to bring together our recommendations for local water management.”

A pool with empty lanes at Wharenui Chelsea Shover AS school and public pools around the city are closing, the Wharenui Swim Club remains open and virtually unused. “We’ve got a pool sitting here with space to burn and wonderful lanes,” Jan Hance, who is responsible for school bookings at Wharenui, said. Earthquakes closed the stadium and

gymnasium formerly associated with the swim club, Ms Hance said, adding that both are slated for demolition. The damage left the pool accessible only through a temporary entrance, which Ms Hance said contributed to a perception that the pool was closed. the Christchurch City Council. Many council pools have become overcrowded, a problem that shows no sign of abating. On a per swim basis, Wharenui costs $5.50, 50 cents more than a single session at a council pool. However, a 20-swim concession card is cheaper at Wharenui.

Christine de Felice SPONSORSHIP of a Christchurch school that started after the September 2010 earthquake is set to continue with a charity golf tournament being held in Auckland on October 1. Ferndale Special Needs School, which caters for children and young people from age five to 21 with physical and intellectual disabilities, receives support from eftpos company Paymark, board chair Jacki Morris said. “They have been sponsoring the school since the September 2010 earthquake,” Mrs Morris said. Paymark’s head of sales and marketing Paul Whiston said following the earthquake he and his team were wondering how they could help Christchurch people. “A staff member mentioned they had seen a news item about Ferndale School being burgled just after the earthquake with computers and other equipment being stolen. “We thought it would be a good idea to help them. We contacted the school and they told us insurance covered the computers but they were struggling with other things, so we made the decision to adopt them,” Mr Whiston said. The company donated a van and interactive light boards to the school and later some canvases
Artist explores ideas of land and ownership LAND, ownership and the city emerging from the Canterbury earthquakes is explored in a project organised by Christchurch Art Gallery in conjunction with Christchurch-based artist Tony de Lautour. In a format that mimics real estate giveaways, a selection of de Lautour’s real estate paintings have been published and are being distributed using the same mechanism. Unreal Estate is free and available in magazine stands across the city. Unreal Estate provides a commentary on the changing face of Christchurch’s property market, both in the suburbs and the central city, and comments also on the impact and potential legacy of liquefaction, designated zones and

technical categories. Art Gallery director Jenny Harper said Unreal Estate provided an opportunity for those who engaged in it to experience de Lautour’s work in an unusual format. “It’s an artist’s book so in itself it is a fascinating object. But it’s neither archival nor a limited edition. As we see it, this is another Outer Spaces project. But, by using the format and design of a real estate tabloid and by distributing it equally liberally, its unexplained presence around the city will become a subtle statement about property.” Unreal Estate is also available at Christchurch Art Gallery Shop’s new central city location at 40 Lichfield Street.

and oil paints. “As a ‘thank you’, the students painted pictures on the canvases and these have pride of place in our offices,” Mr Whiston said. “The students got so much out of it and so did we. “This really resonates with us and that’s why we have organised the inaugural Paymark Charity Golf Day to raise funds for the school. More than 100 people will be taking part in the tournament, from all the major banks and other major companies.” The company was flying a group of students and teachers to Auckland for the day, Mr Whiston said. Significant prizes, including a BMW vehicle, would be won at the golf tournament, which would be followed by a charity auction with items such as a meal for six cooked by Master Chef winner Nadia Lim and overseas travel going under the hammer, he said. Mrs Morris said the school had a very good working relationship with Paymark, and although the school was still waiting for its earthquake damage to be assessed and had lost equipment in the burglary, “something nice had come out of it”.

Inspirational trip for young adventurer Samantha Early
WORDS can’t explain the beauty of the Kermadec Islands, according to St Thomas of Canterbury College student Craig Smith, who recently took part in the first-ever Young Blake Expedition. “You were just around one of the most pristine environments there is, even the water was so crystal clear,” Craig, who lives in Leeston, said. As one of the 30 youth delegates on the 12-day August expedition, led by the Sir Peter Blake Trust, his role included plankton monitoring, taking part in Navy life on the HMNZS Canterbury and tagging sharks for research. “We had to catch them off a fishing rod, which we all had permits for, bring it on to the boat, size it up, see what breed and sex it is, put a tag in there, measure it up,” he said. He said the biggest one he saw was about 1.57 metres long. Craig said he was planning a career in the Navy once he had finished school. “I also want to make people environmentally aware of what we have and what we need to protect because if you don’t protect it, it will be gone.” Craig said another highlight was tramping on Raoul Island and coming across the wreck of the Kinei Maru at Denham Bay. He also had the experience of sailing through a “white sea” of pumice, which was floating on the ocean as a result of an underwater volcano. He said he was made to feel at home on the ship and loved experiencing it all with a great bunch of people including teenagers who had the same concern for the environment as he had, although

how the different arguments about the cathedral’s future were framed and expressed. The major issues associated with the controversy would emerge from a content analysis of material collected, Prof McAllister said. “The cathedral is a place that Christchurch people clearly identify with, but for many it is more than just a place, it is a place that embodies the city and its history. Thus it is a site of memory, a place through which to think about the past, whatever that may mean and different people will have different memories associated with it, some deeply personal. “To most it is also a sacred place, a place of worship, and as such it has a special status which reinforces its role as a place of memory and symbol of the city. “In taking a position against demolition of the cathedral, people may thus be protecting their identity, their link to the city and their link to the past. The research project seeks to determine if these assumptions can be borne out in the ways in which people speak and write about the cathedral,” he said.

CHRISTCHURCH Cathedral is the subject of a research project into the significance of the church that has been launched at University of Canterbury (UC). Associate Professor Patrick McAllister said the iconic church was the heart and soul of the city and would be the subject of a summer scholarship project later this year. The cathedral suffered serious damage in the earthquakes and the future of its ruins and its artefacts has provoked public outcry and heated controversy, with appeals to local and national government and to the monarchy Prof McAllister said. “Documenting and unravelling this controversy by means of analysis will be timely for the people of Christchurch and New Zealand. “The assumption is that the cathedral controversy is a social process, possibly revealing a variety of social relationships between individuals and groups, which are, in a sense, mediated by the building itself. “The cathedral controversy may be at least partly about social relations in the city, including relations of affinity and/or antagonism affecting the groups and individuals involved. Some of these may be historical, some recent. The second hypothesis is that the controversy could be related not merely to the cathedral as a place but more generally to the series of earthquakes and the social and emotional trauma that they gave rise to.” Prof McAllister said it suggested that the controversy was also a means of dealing with the disruption the disasters wrought and of ‘reclaiming’ the city that was taken from its citizens by the earthquakes. The project would seek to collect and analyse information about the cathedral controversy. UC researchers want to find out why had there been no agreement about the future of the cathedral and

Independent travellers have voted Christchurch-based company Haka Tours as the Visitor Activity Supreme Winner in the annual Rankers Traveller Voted Awards. Social media has formed a key role in building the company. Christine de Felice talks to founder Ryan Saunders about his business growth. Mainland Press: Has using Social Media been the key to your success? Ryan Sanders: Social Media forms a key component of our marketing strategy. It provides a great, interactive platform to communicate with our customers. We love to communicate the experiential side of things and encouraging our customers to upload pictures, write about us and share their experiences with us is a priority. MP: Is that the main way you reach your customers or is your website also a good source of business for the company? RS: The main way we target our audience is online through search engine optimisation and online advertising. Currently we do not have relationships with travel agents or wholesalers, though as part of our growth strategy, one strategic relationship with a retail agency brand is probably where we will head. We are in no rush, though – there is so much to do and achieve in the online space. Our current website has a bespoke online booking engine, which we had developed for our unique business model. It was a big expense but was necessary to ensure our customers have a world-class online experience when booking our tours and reduce customer abandonment during this important stage. There is no point spending money on advertising and directing customers to your site unless they are captivated enough to stay there!

MP: Where do your tours go? RS: Our tours go all over New Zealand. Tours start in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and range from seven to 24 days so we cover a good portion of the North and South islands. MP: What sets them apart from other tours? RS: We like to blur the lines between fixed group travel and independent travelling. Our tours include all the essential components such as accommodation, transport, breakfast and tour guide. Customers can then customise their tour with discounted activities or any of our ‘Extreme Activity Packs’. This means our customer are only paying for stuff they really want to do instead of buying a tour that may have a number of activities or experiences that they are not that keen on. MP: Where do most of your customers come from? RS: The majority would be Australians, Brits, Americans and Canadians but we also get Europeans, customers from Singapore, Hong Kong and pretty much everywhere else! MP: Do you think the budget end of the tourism market has the potential to grow further and if so where would that growth come from? RS: Yes, the budget end of the market is by far the most resilient and there is definite room for further growth. There has been a lot of talk about the emerging markets such as India and China but I believe the real opportunity lies in very well defined, niche tourism offerings that cater for a specific sub-market. Travellers are no longer interested in generic tourism offerings and when times are tough, clearly communicating your points of difference, knowing exactly who your customers are and what they want is paramount.

CANTERBURY’S braided rivers first captured Springston South artist Mike Glover’s imagination as a teenager. Thirty years later, it is an obsession that continues to dominate his work. Although he also paints other types of landscape, it is the braided rivers that have inspired him the most and for which he is best known. “They remind me of roads sort of heading into the distance and leading round corners,” he says. “There is something sort of mysterious and magical about that and I couldn’t really explain why.” Mike first moved from Christchurch to the home he shares with his partner Helen and their daughter Rosie 18 years ago. Since the move he has found himself more immersed in his natural surroundings. “I guess it has increased my appreciation of the environment and also what’s great about it and what’s not so great with some of the rivers being polluted and so forth. Observing that over the time we’ve been here has showed me it’s not all rosy.” He has occasionally been criticised for bringing his environmental concerns into his work but he makes no apologies for it. “There’s not much point in doing the nice landscapes if they’re disappearing or they’re under threat so I guess it’s a natural flow on from being interested and caring about those places.” One of his most recent works to be displayed was not a painting but a photo he took at Selwyn Huts of Rosie with a temporary health warning sign which advised against swimming in the river. “I realised a few months ago the sign was older than my daughter who was six,” he says.

Mock up: Mike Glover’s daughter Rosie covers a health warning sign with his own homemade version. This photo was part of a recent Selwyn Gallery exhibition.
“The fact is this temporary sign has been there longer than 10 years as far as we can tell and that’s not right.” Although Mike is fortunate to have been able to make a living doing what he loves, it hasn’t always been easy. “It’s a struggle at times so I do art tutoring and sell cards and prints and you do what you can really to try and expand your art practise into all sorts of other areas as well.”

Opinion divided on Lyttelton house THE proposed design for the Stanaway family’s new home in Lyttelton has stirred strong debate online. The Rise Up Christchurch Facebook page asked people what they thought of it. Of the 745 comments posted over the weekend, most appeared to be critical of the design. However, a Facebook page called Build the Stanaways! Kick Start the Lyttelton Community had attracted 799 likes as of Monday night. Here is a selection of the responses from Rise Up Christchurch: Susan Carroll: No, doesn’t grab me at all as a home. Susan Kossiakoff: Who donated the boxcars? I generally LOVE contemporary architecture, but this does not ring my bells... Luana Swindells: I love modern architecture, but this is something I would build in an area surrounded by trees ... not in a commercial area. This corner of Lyttelton is a focal point and therefore consideration to the design needs to be given to ensure that it fits in with the proposed design plan of the commercial area. If it’s kept as a residential design, I would lose the 3rd level and have internal bracing rather than the exposed external bracing shown. Jennifer Tasker: NO boxes and beams is in the wrong setting for this type of building Jane Forrest: ugly ugly ugly oh and UGLY!!! Leanne Roberts: Wow! I love that it is different! Love the mix of the new with the old building next door. I think Christchurch will become a city of contrasts! Pete Dunlop: Just one question, when did every rectangle box in architecture suddenly become seen as a shipping container? This is a

fantastic example of bold post-eq ultra-modern design. It’s not what I’d build for myself, but I see the merit in this form. It’s certainly a whole lot more exciting than many of the buildings that have been lost. The design is also having the desired effect of most bold architecture, creating a discussion point for people to argue about. And argue you have. Gavin Simon: Big weight up on top of spindly legs. Doesn’t look durable. Leonne Jane Watson: Revolting, does not fit in with the footprint of the area Candice Taylor: LOVE IT ... no point rebuilding faux heritage. This takes inspiration from the area and such a prominent site deserves a bespoke residence. Andrew Robinson: Go for it, it’s about time the South Island moved on from being so conservative. Out with old and in with the new. Have your say at riseupchristchurch.

TC3 Drilling Programme
TC3 property identified as having foundation damage
A drilling programme to investigate homes within the Canterbury Home Repair Programme managed by Fletcher EQR will be complete by mid-2013. Below are the suburbs where we have completed work or have work underway. Drilling for a full collaborative programme with insurers would be expected to conclude by March 2014.
EQC geotechnical investigation (borehole or cone penetration test) undertaken on roadside berm or private property Allow 8 weeks from when EQC calls you
Drill results loaded to Canterbury Geotechnical Database (information made available to structural engineer) Allow 10 working days for cone penetration test Allow 20 working days for borehole
WHERE WE ARE DRILLING Mairehau New Brighton North New Brighton Parklands Queenspark
Homes in TC3 that require foundation repair or rebuilding must get a building consent from the local council before repairs or rebuilding can begin. The requirements for the consent include geotechnical assessment of the land in the vicinity of the damaged house. We’ve been drilling since March and, with more than a dozen rigs on the job, we’ve put more than 1,500 holes in the ground.

What happens next Once the land near your house has been drilled, engineers analyse the information and design foundations specific to your property. These designs then go to the local council for building consent. Once consent is obtained, work on repairs or rebuilding can begin. Drilling also provides information that allows us to determine the full cost to repair your house, which confirms (if we haven’t already) whether you stay with EQC or are managed by your insurer.

Ingredients ■ 1 to 1.5kg lean Quality Mark beef for casseroling ■ 1 tsp each salt and ground black pepper ■ 2 onions, peeled and diced ■ 3 tbsp Thai-style red curry paste ■ 2 tsp minced garlic ■ 2 medium, orange-fleshed kumara, peeled and diced ■ 400g can coconut milk ■ 1½ cups beef stock ■ 1 to 1½ cups frozen peas ■ 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander
Tips ■ There’s lots of curry sauce with this recipe. If you’d like a thicker curry, use only one cup stock when cooking in the slow cooker. ■ To cook in the oven, simmer at 160 degrees Celsius for 1½ to 2 hours with 1½ cups of stock.
Just right: Try this tasty curry dish for your family to enjoy.
Method Cut the beef into 2 to 2.5cm pieces and season with salt and pepper. Brown the meat in a dash of oil in a hot frying pan; this is best done in two to three batches. With the last batch of meat, add the onions and curry paste and cook until fragrant. Put the beef mixture into the slow cooker with the garlic, kumara, coconut milk and stock, and cover with the lid. Cook on low for five to six hours or on high for three to four hours. Stir in the peas and coriander, re-cover and continue cooking on high for a further 15 to 20 minutes. Serve in bowls garnished with shredded coconut and accompany with steamed rice and prawn crackers.

What to do now
Where you live will govern what you can do outside now. In northern, warmer regions, it’s all hands on deck, with planting, sowing of seeds and keeping on top of weeds. Those of us in the somewhat cooler zones can hold fire outdoors until the soil warms up and dries out a little more. Regardless of where you live, indoor jobs like buying seeds from catalogues, seed sowing and sprouting seed limit the time and effort required to deal with potatoes can be done. them later on. Weed control options include: Vegetable garden Mulch – As new weeds appear, a thick Potatoes: If spuds for Christmas Day are layer of mulch can be placed on top of weed on your bucket list then now is the time to seedlings. This smothers smaller weeds and sprout seed potatoes. Plant out: Celery, peas, bokchoi, spring stops them in their tracks. Spray – A quick spray with Roundup or onion, onions, cabbage, cauliflower, something similar will deal to them as well. broccoli, parsley, coriander, thyme and Hoe – Hoeing is an effective and sometimes rosemary. Sow seed: Sow beetroot, parsnip, forgotten method of weed control. Not only radish, carrots and leeks where they are to does it have instant results but it’s a good way mature. Under cover, sow runner and butter to burn off some calories at the same time. beans, corn and courgettes. Tomatoes, Aim to hoe weeds off at ground level. Small capsicum, eggplant and chilli can be sown weeds can be left to wilt and die on the soil in northern regions; hold off in other areas surface or cultivated in; otherwise rake into piles and remove. until mid to late September. Protect seedlings from slug and snails – they are looking for food at the moment and will simply adore munching on your greens. Lay bait every few weeks.
Fruit Spray: In areas where buds on fruit trees, such as nectarines, peaches and plums, are about to burst, spray with copper to protect from leaf curl disease. Deciduous fruit trees can still be planted and good stocks of apples, pears, plums, apricots, nectarines and peaches are still available. Stake young fruit trees; this gives the root system a chance to take hold and anchor itself in the soil. Once trees are established, stakes can be removed. Rhubarb: Lift and divide older clumps now. Prepare the area by digging a large hole and blending in plenty of well-rotted manure and compost. For existing clumps, add a generous layer of sheep pellets or compost around the crown of the plant.
Flower garden Pick daffodils, camellias, daphne, tulips, anemones and hellebores. Plant perennials such as Achillea, delphiniums, Alstroemeria, Coreopsis, Nemesia, Dianthus, Iberis, Lavatera and Veronica. Sow wildflower seeds. Sprinkle seeds over weed-free areas and plants will appear within a few weeks. Prune autumn-flowering camellias, witch hazel (Hamamelis) and wintersweet (Chimonanthus) after flowering.
Roses Protect the fresh growth on roses from pests and diseases by spraying with Super Shield. Add a layer of rose mulch around the base of the plants; this will protect the beds from weeds, maintain moisture and add nutrients to the soil.

Cyclist sets New Zealand record Chelsea Shover VICTORIA Steel, a year 13 student at Villa Maria College, recently set a New Zealand track cycling record in the team sprint event. Teaming up with a former opponent, Paige Paterson, of Auckland, Steel rode the first lap of the Women’s Team Sprint at the Junior Track World Championships in Invercargill. Their time, 35.225 seconds for two laps around a 350-metre track, was a national record but came up second to the Russian Record time: Victoria Steel, front, rides ahead of teammate Paige team, which finished in a world Paterson at the Junior Track World Championships in Invercargill. record time of 34.155 seconds. THREE hundred and fifty school-aged kids will descend onto Malvern Park in St Albans today to compete in a variety of Olympic-themed sports. The ‘Sport Spectacular’ event has been organised by sport and fitness students to promote the Olympic themes of excellence, friendship and respect, while also introducing children to sports such as football, athletics events, judo and rugby sevens, which will be at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016. Coaches on the day will include Graeme Spinks – a New Zealand judo Olympic representative (Barcelona 1992, Los Angeles 1984), Anita Sutherland of Canterbury Athletics, Lee Golding of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union and Michael De Bono of Mainland Football. Aoraki Polytechnic sport and fitness lecturer Brett Leyden said “sport fitness and wellbeing plays a big part in our community and events like this provide healthy environments for our kids to learn”. The Sport Spectacular race for gold runs from 9.30am to 2.30pm today.

Let’s get a campaign going I ALWAYS feel very privileged that the Mainland Press allows me the opportunity to write a weekly column. It gives me an outlet to write about things/issues I let fill my head and that keep me awake at nights thinking! Believe me, the biggest buzz I get is the email feedback from the readers. It’s great to think people take the time to read what is becoming an important free newspaper that is delivered to your door. Of course, not everyone agrees with what I write and that for me is very stimulating. Journalists rely heavily on feedback, so please, keep it coming. Since the earthquakes there has been a plethora of action groups that have sprung up. There are a lot of disgruntled people who feel the only way they can have a voice is to take to the streets and head for ‘City Hall’. There have also been a lot of opportunities for local residents to comment on the shape and style of our new city as it is developed and rebuilt. It’s very healthy for the community to have a say. Apathy does not achieve anything, and for a long time the citizens of Canterbury have sat on their collective hands and moaned and groaned about things behind closed doors. No longer – and that is very healthy for the city going forward. A few weeks ago I floated the idea that we should take a serious look at putting a bid in to host a future Commonwealth Games. I said there was an option to play host to the 2024 Games. I was very correctly pulled up by some readers who told me the Games will actually be held in 2022. Thank you for putting me straight, but it has not encouraged me to take my eye off the ultimate goal. What it has done is make me realise that 2022 may be too short a time frame for the Garden City to be ready to host
such a big event, so I have readjusted and feel we should definitely target 2026. Now, before the masses rally against this line of thinking, I will repeat what I wrote recently. The thing that has crippled so many other cities when they have been awarded the Games has been the massive cost involved in upgrading their facilities and infrastructure. Our fair city is not in that position. All our major sporting arenas have been destroyed. The Central City Plan has been unveiled and has highlighted where the main projects will be situated. We need these facilities to make our province function again, but I firmly believe that were we successful in our bid this would give huge impetus to set the timelines and tick off the boxes with a huge goal to strive for. Before you reach for your email button, consider this. Sure, the Games is an event to which the entire Commonwealth would be invited, but it would also be just the shot in the arm the beleaguered hospitality sector would respond to and replace a lot of bed nights, bars and cafes that have been destroyed in our reduced central city. Unlike many other cities around the world, the ratepayers here would not be burdened with massive rate rises, because we have to build these facilities anyway. And what an opportunity it would be to show the world how our city had risen from its knees. I urge readers to communicate with me and express whether this venture is worth taking to another level and setting a realistic time line for us all to benefit from our endeavours. Stand up, be proud and leave a lasting testament for future generations to enjoy. The slogan for the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games is “Live the dream” and that’s what I think we have the chance to achieve if we unite and aim for the one goal.

WORKS of Maori art are heading to the bottom of the world to make New Zealand’s base on the frozen continent of Antarctica feel more like home. Antarctica New Zealand chief executive Lou Sanson said in a focus group last year some of the Maori staff members indicated they did not see any sign of their traditions at Scott Base. In response, the organisation commissioned Ngai Tahu to provide a pair of woven tukutuku panels, a pou whenua (carved pole) and a carved sign. “It’s about making our base in Antarctica feel very New Zealand and proudly recognising our Maori heritage,” Mr Sanson said. Antarctica New Zealand is a Crown entity responsible for developing, managing and
executing the government’s activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. The pou whenua will stand directly in front of Scott Base, with the sign to be placed at its entrance. Both items are being carved in Hokitika. The two tukutuku panels were finished in Christchurch last week by a team of weavers, including members of the Kati Waewae hapu from Arahura on the West Coast. They were assisted by eight Antarctica New Zealand staff members. Ngai Tahu weaver Ranui Ngarimu said the panels would hang on a leaders’ wall and a memorial wall, and each used traditional designs to tell stories. She said the Manukura panel, which represented

leadership or people who inspired others, featured a Poutama pattern in its centre. “It talks about the ongoing journey of learning, it’s a never-ending journey and that’s what we see of those people who go down to the ice and do the research,” she said. The memorial panel, called Maumahara, will be placed on the memorial wall above photos of those killed while in the New Zealand Antarctic programme. Its pattern is called Purapurawhetu. “That is representing the twinkling of the stars in the sky, it represents those who have passed – both those of Ngai Tahu and others who have passed down there,” Ms Ngarimu said. All the artworks will be installed at the base in January or February next year and arrangements are being made for their blessing and unveiling.

Replicas of the tukutuku panels made in a more modern form, out of acrylic, stainless steel and copper will be made to hang in the offices of Antarctica New Zealand in Christchurch. “It’s about the connection of Ngai Tahu to the Antarctic and the connection between us as Maori and what New Zealand science is doing to enhance our knowledge,” she said. It was a team effort, with many on the West Coast working to gather the kiekie for the weaving and preparing the panels. Antarctica New Zealand administrative assistant Jo Eckersley said she really got into the weaving and the experience made her want to learn more. “I don’t get to go down to the ice every year but this was a way I could be part of something that is at Scott Base always.”

Eastside dance party a chance to meet new friends EIGHT eastside primary schools were hosted for a dance party on a recent Friday night in New Brighton. This joint venture by Youth Alive Trust and Blue Light aimed to bring together year 7 and 8 students from the area for a night of fun and a chance to meet future friends before going to high school. It also served a number of schools in the area that no longer have school halls and can’t run their normal school discos. “Our young people have missed out on the chance to show their moves on the dance floor, as our school hall is closed. There was a real buzz and excitement in the lead-up to the dance party and it was great to see so many big smiles at the end of the night,” senior teacher at South New Brighton Primary School Amy Ridpath said. Youth Alive Trust youth worker Amber Henderson said many of the local schools only had a small number of year 7 and 8 students, so bringing them together “created an exciting energy”. “Some of these young people will end up being best friends in high school, and this might have been the first time they met,” Ms Anderson said. This is the second joint dance party Youth Alive Trust and Blue Light have organised for the schools on the east of Christchurch, and a booking has already been made for the next one. The event took place at North New Brighton War Memorial Hall. The schools that took part were South New Brighton Primary, North New Brighton Primary, Central New Brighton Primary, New Brighton Catholic, Freeville Primary, Wainoni Primary, Queenspark High excitement: Enjoying the dance party fun are from left: Georgia Levington, Ariana Austin, Britney Primary and Parkview Primary. Yellow-themed lunch supports Daffodil Day appeal A ‘YELLOW Luncheon’ organised by the Wainoni Avonside Community Services Trust last Thursday inspired a group of local residents to get into the daffodil-coloured theme by entering the Best Yellow Plate of food and Best Yellow Dress competitions. The event was arranged to support the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day appeal and the participants made donations to the cause, as well as having fun, organiser Betty Chapman said. Ali Mitchell from the Cancer Society judged the entries, with Jeanette Brown winning the Best Yellow Plate and Eve Stockdale the Best Yellow Dress. A cancer survivor also told her story of how she had beaten cancer after being diagnosed three years ago, Mrs Chapman said. Although the donations hadn’t been counted, but were added to the Cancer Society’s overall collection, Ms Mitchell noted that the Yellow Luncheon participants had been particularly generous, Mrs Chapman said.
Happy faces: Everyone got into the cheerful yellow theme at last week’s luncheon. ◄

SOUTH Brighton’s Bridge Street bridge has changed to exit only from the beach suburb as from Monday this week. Wastewater pipe repair work at the Estuary Road roundabout means that a full lane has been closed, requiring a detour. Bridge St from the South Brighton roundabout to the Anzac Drive/ Bexley Road roundabout will be west-bound only. Traffic into South Brighton and Southshore now comes through New Brighton via the Pages Rd bridge or other bridges across the Avon. The signposted detour route at the Pages Rd bridge directs traffic along Seaview Rd to Hardy St then along to Owles Terrace. This detour route bypasses the most damaged section of Owles Tce. Fulton Hogan, part of SCIRT, is co-ordinating the wastewater pipe replacement in South Brighton, at the roundabout and along to Cromer Place, as closely as possible with the bridge repairs. The repairs to the bridge itself, which follows on from the wastewater pipe replacement on Bridge Street, will take around
10 to 12 months to complete. The detour and one-way system will remain in place during this time. The bridge will remain open in both directions for cyclists and pedestrian traffic. The one-way detour is the preferred option for managing the bridge and wastewater repair as there is not enough queuing space at the roundabouts at either end. Traffic would potentially block these intersections under a one-way traffic lights or manual traffic management system, with significant delays and risks. In a Civil Defence emergency the works down Bridge St and on the bridge will allow traffic to flow out of Southshore and South New Brighton. Works will immediately cease. A second, short-term detour around Estuary Rd roundabout will be in place from Monday. SCIRT thanks everyone in South Brighton and Southshore for their patience getting the area back on its feet. SCIRT also encourages people to continue to use local businesses as much as possible despite access and parking difficulties.

Students display their enterprise scheme ideas in YES fair Chelsea Shover
PILLOWS shaped like battle axes, jewellery from earthquake rubble and moisturiser “by men, for men” were just some of the wares on offer at the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) Trade Fair held at Northland Mall on Saturday. Taking top honours was a team selling Anything Sauce, a garlic-chilli and barbeque sauce designed to enliven bland noodles and toasties. Avonside Girls High’s team won the best customer service award for their charity bracelets. The team put together bracelets featuring kiwi charms, which they made in hard materials class. They sold the bracelets to raise money for a three-year-old boy in treatment for leukaemia. They won $50 to invest in their business. Fifteen teams from eight schools entered
Canterbury’s Young Enterprise Scheme, which invited high school entrepreneurs to create and market a product. All the teams focused on building a business, but several also incorporated a charitable element. A team from Marion College crafted jewellery from the rubble of St Michael’s church. Maijon Calcutt, Holly Sterling and Nicole Egan said they wanted to “use the rubble in a nice way”. Their earrings, bracelets and necklaces incorporated stones from the church, and key rings displayed crosses. They were donating a portion of their profits to St John Ambulance Service. Many products – like a sweatshirt fitted with holes to thread an iPod through, a babysitting guide, hair-wrap kits and Anything Sauce – spoke to a youth market. Others honed in

Young athletes lunch with Olympians
SIX students who might have an Olympics in their future had the opportunity to lunch with Olympians who had just returned from London. The gold medal sailing team of Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie, rower Louise Trappitt, rowing coach Calvin Ferguson, rowing physio Craig Newlands and swimmer Steven Kent shared pizza, chips, salad and bread with the students. “I liked actually getting to know them,” said Nicholas Close, who is a year 5 student at Burwood School. Nicholas, the youngest of the selected students, is a promising swimmer. He competed at nationals last year and has nine qualifying times already this year. The lunch took place at Cocopelli’s at The Palms following the city’s welcome home ceremony. The students rotated tables to have a chance to speak with each Olympian. The students were chosen based on paragraphs they wrote about their athletic accomplishments and future goals. Prior to the lunch, the students did not know which athletes would be attending. Having the gold medalists among them was especially exciting, they said. Ford (9, Lower Hutt), Maya Kalbarczyk (12, Nicholas said it was interesting to hear the Auckland) and Natasha Tate (12, Auckland) athletes talking about supporting teams from selected as winners. other countries and was particularly surprised Daily deal operator GrabOne along with to hear them say they liked Australia. fashion designer for World and competition judge Denise L’Estrange-Corbet have also created badge designs to be sold alongside the Caltex Dyers Road children’s designs. Some teams developed their products specifically to enter the contest, but for at least one team the product came first. Desiree Lyford, a year 13 student at Linwood College’s teen parent unit, Kimihia Parents’ College, said she initially made the baby shower cake as a gift for a friend. Piling nappies, blankets, soap and wash cloths into the shape of a three-tiered cake, she made a care package of newborn essentials. Later, Desiree and her team discovered they could sell the gifts to classmates and others.

A TRANSITIONAL St Albans Community Centre will soon be operating at 1047-1049 Colombo Street. The centre is expected to be fully ready in about a week and the Christchurch City Council is already taking bookings, communications adviser for the council Joanna Bean said at the opening ceremony last week. The council partnered with Lions Club International to prepare the facility, which has two rooms and a capacity for 50 people. The centre is equipped with chairs, tables and a whiteboard, as well as kitchen and toilet facilities. The former centre was used for activities like laughing yoga, drama, book discussions, cooking and knitting. UC student wins top NZ Dragon’s Den style competition
Gold ambitions: Rebecca Gillett poses between sailing gold medallists Olivia Powrie, left, and Jo Aleh at a lunch following the official welcome home.
Young athletes lunch with Olympians Chelsea Shover
SIX students who might have an Olympics in their future had the opportunity to lunch with Olympians who had just returned from London. The gold medal sailing team of Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie, rower Louise Trappitt, rowing Coach Calvin Ferguson, rowing physio Craig Newlands and swimmer Steven Kent shared pizza, chips, salad and bread with the students. “It was pretty rare to mingle with the people you aspire to be like,” said Zac Barber, a triathlete in year 13 at St Bede’s College. The lunch took place at Cocopelli’s at The Palms following the city’s welcome home ceremony. The students rotated tables to have a chance to speak with each Olympian. “They seemed quite happy to talk with us and answer any questions,” said Rebecca Gillett of Papanui High. The year 10 student, who competes in football and athletics, said it was particularly interesting to hear about London
‘
and the athletes’ village. Zac said he was astonished to hear that Mr Kent swims 70 km per week. “It was a bit of a wake up,” he said, noting that he currently swims about 20 km per week, in addition to biking and running. The students were chosen based on paragraphs they wrote about their athletic accomplishments and future goals. Ben Musson, who competes in athletics at Papanui High, said the Olympians shared what they did to become the top athletes in the world, and how hard he would have to train to get there. Prior to the lunch, the students did not know which athletes would be attending. Ben said he was especially excited that the gold medal sailors were among the mix. “It was quite cool meeting them and getting to hold their medals,” he said.
Business savvy: Pip Widdon, right, recently won the New Zealand stage of an Australasian business competition. Sam Stapley, left, and Thomas Pearse also made it to the top four in the contest.
A University of Canterbury (UC) student is the New Zealand winner of Australasian competition Big Break Project, a Dragon’s Den style tertiary business competition. Pip Widdon beat 143 teams of pairs or individuals to win the New Zealand event last week, qualifying her for the Australasian finals in Melbourne on October 2 and 3. The winning team will receive $20,000 for themselves and $50,000 for their university. UC accounting lecturer and MBA director Tony Mortensen said the result represented not only a great win for Widdon, who had put in a tremendous amount of work but also a positive result for UC and New Zealand.

The cycling scene

Having fun with group cycling LOOKING for the historical roots of competitive road cycling, I go no further than Europe. My cycling experiences in Europe have been in groups. This is because there are many benefits in group riding. I want to outline ways in which it makes cycling a better experience. Firstly: safety in numbers has good relevance here. But, conversely, we must also be aware of the dangers inherent in larger groups. The safety comes from being more visible and motorists will usually be more considerate when having to slow down to pass a number of cyclists rather
than just one or two. But we need to stay left in consideration of motorists, no more than two abreast at times and only single file at others. I also encourage the groups I take through town to bunch up close together when stopped at lights so as to use less space and time to move through intersections. It pays for the front riders to signal whether it is clear or if a car is coming, direction of turning and to slow when leaving the intersection for those at the back to catch up. These all make the group more cohesive as well as safer. In terms of the training effect of group riding,

you can’t go past the benefits of the faster speed, riding in proximity to others and the social aspect. Training at a faster speed: next to, in front of and behind others will help you to become familiar with the experiences of race day. Whether you’re with cyclists faster or slower than you, you will benefit from either being pushed, being patient or just making your ride seem shorter on those days when motivation may ebb a little. And of course you’re more likely to enjoy a coffee afterwards too!

“Given she also beat so many teams from New Zealand and Australian universities to get to the final reinforces the idea that we grow some real talent in this country,” he said. “I believe we have to make sure we support up and coming professionals like Pip so we can create a more efficient and productive economy in the future. With people like Pip on our case I’m sure our future looks bright. Two other UC students, Sam Stapley and Thomas Pearse, made it to the last four of the New Zealand finals. CPA Australia, one of the world’s largest accounting bodies, organised the competition. This was the first year it ran in New Zealand.
