“All the scientists here must be shaking in their boots at the moment. It seems as if their government is trying to pin the blame on someone for what nature has done. No-one can foresee the future.”
“Just hearing about it, it does not seem very fair. I guess the level of knowledge they possessed would determine whether they should have been held responsible or not. I think that earthquakes would be very hard to predict accurately.”
“You can’t predict nature. They should not be imprisoned, it is far too harsh. It may put people off becoming scientists.”

will see a need to fly here. If local travellers create the need, the airlines will come, we’ll get the flights and cheaper prices because of competition.
In other words, the more you use Christchurch Airport , the more airlines
Not only that, but more flights will lead to the airport company paying bigger dividends to Christchurch City Council, which means dollars off rates. In total, South Islanders are giving about $8 million worth of airport charges to Auckland Airport by leaving the country through its international departure gates. But only one in 10 Mainland travellers were going places Christchurch doesn’t link to. South Islanders going through Auckland translates to three daily services from Christchurch to Australia each year, or a daily service to North America. Parochial passengers can make that happen.

Anti-nuclear campaigners present petition to Japanese Consul
Countdown to The Concert

Samantha Early | samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz
CHRISTCHURCH band Dukes mucked in to help their local community following the earthquakes and now they’re eager to perform for 10,000 fellow volunteers on Saturday. They’re one of the more than 20 bands set to take part in The Concert, the largest music event to hit the city this year. It’s being organised by the Volunteer Army Foundation, an initiative of the Student Volunteer Army, to celebrate the positive developments happening in Christchurch and encourage more people to volunteer in their communities. Tickets can’t be bought; instead concert-goers had to earn it by logging at least four hours of voluntary work. As of Tuesday more than 40,000 hours had been either completed or promised as part of the pre-pledge, which allowed people to complete their service in the six months following the event. Volunteer Army Foundation founder Sam Johnson said the new pre-pledging option was not a freebie. “People who fail to complete their volunteer service may be subject to appear on a public ‘name and shame’ blacklist. So beware – terms and conditions do apply.”
Keyboardist and vocalist for the Dukes, L.A. Mitchell, who is also an established solo artist and member of Fly My Pretties, wanted to perform at The Concert as a sign of solidarity with Christchurch people and their generosity to others. She said the Dukes always aimed to have fun themselves and wanted to pass that on to the audience. “It is pretty humbling for us; we are a Christchurch-based act, we’ve all mucked in ourselves in our local communities with sausage sizzles, taking down chimneys, and delivering food parcels for the Sallies. We really support the idea of giving your time to others in the community and are really grateful to be able to provide some entertainment back to those people.” Ms Mitchell has recently been volunteering twice a week at her local Addington school and labouring on Fridays at a Little River farm. “I think the surprising thing is it isn’t a burden to do. Hanging out with kids and a bit of hard work are really refreshing opposites to my normal work as a musician, it’s a different kind of benefit.” For more information see www. theconcert.co.nz
GORDON’S
Campaigners: A group of Japanese-born Christchurch residents presented a letter and a petition to the Japanese Consul in Christchurch last Friday. All members of the Committee for the Immediate Abolition of Japan’s Nuclear Energy Policy, they had collected more than 5500 signatures for their petition requesting the Japanese government to stop immediately the restart of nuclear power plants in Japan. After the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima, the country’s 54 nuclear plants were closed down, but two reopened in July this year. The Consul accepted the petition and agreed to forward it to the Japanese Government. Following the presentation, the initiator of the campaign, Kuniko Koyama, third from right, said the nuclear plants in Fukushima were still constantly dispersing huge amounts of radiation into the air, soil and water and that the catastrophe was far from the end. She also thanked New Zealanders and Japanese residents for their support of the petition. Photo: Christine de Felice

CROSSING the bridge over the Avon on my way home last week, I peered down at the two black swans who have been preparing for their family this spring. Their numbers had increased with two fluffy cygnets out from under mother’s wing and under dad’s watchful eye, swimming towards two ducks. Dad nudged them away. I turned to another old codger who was also watching and remarked how alert and sparkling-eyed the young ones seem today. He readily agreed and we swapped yarns of grandchildren. Linda and I had our first grandson, Fraser Jones, born in Taranaki almost a year ago. He is the apple of his Christchurch grandparents’ eight eyes. A ‘smiler-macsmiler’, with alert sparkling eyes, knowing grin and knowledge of how to win hearts. At my work is an alert little Eva, daughter of the two Tony(i)s, once students of mine. Eva is the pride of researchers at our New Zealand Brain Research Institute, when she visits us
after home-care. And Ruby, an Australian great niece, also under-one, is similarly endowed with similar charm and intelligence! What has happened to our babies? A new and better template? Like the swans, Linda and I are proud of being of Australian origin, but are now All Blacks, having lived here for almost 40 years and with our New Zealand family. Our whanau basket now has our new passion, Fraser. As an elderly Coroner’s pathologist, however, I grieve when I read about, hear about or see a young one dead from septic shock. It gives me more cause to seek and search for answers in my other work basket, medical research.

Lincoln celebrates generations ABOUT 200 people including alumni and distinguished guests turned up to celebrate 134 years of Lincoln University at the Air Force Museum in Wigram on Saturday night. The ‘Generations at Lincoln’ event focused on the unique generational relationship of Lincoln University graduates. For instance, while three to four generations are common, some families have up to five generations who have attended the university. One of those ‘five generation’ families is the McCaw family. In attendance at the event were two of those generations – current Alumni Association president Jo Spencer-Bower, her brother, current All Black Richie McCaw, and their father Don McCaw. Don’s father, James (Jim) McCaw was also a Lincoln graduate, as was his father before him, Alexander McCaw. Alex enrolled in 1912; however, the family’s connection goes back even further – to their great-great uncle Basil SethSmith, who enrolled at Lincoln in 1892 for a Certificate in Agriculture.

THIS year’s A&P Show will feature first-time exhibitor Ferrymead Historic Park, marking the show’s 150th anniversary. “We have selected a few historical items to display at the Show,” Ferrymead general manager Newton Dodge said. “There will be a locomotive engine, which will be placed on to tracks on site. The Railway Society have loaned it to us and it will be taken to the showgrounds on a truck. “We hope the kids will climb up on it to have their photographs taken.” The rural history group from the park will
man a display of butter churns and explain to visitors how they were used, Mr Dodge said. Other items being displayed include an oldfashioned water pump, an old telephone booth and the trick mirrors that fascinated children in the heydays of Hay’s Roof. There will also be an education display for schools. The park is also having a mural painted to display at the Show. This will feature images of people in period costumes, with a space at the top for people to put their faces into and be photographed. Mr Dodge said people visiting the Ferrymead
Shearing the old-fashioned way Jessica Schaap jessica.s@mainlandpress.co.nz
THE Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show will this year have an old-fashioned twist with a ‘handwinder’ shearing display on offer as part of Cup and Show Week. It was originally introduced to the show because Prince Charles wanted to try it, but due to his tight schedule he probably will not be participating. The display will be held at Canterbury Park at the ‘Selling Centre’ on Friday afternoon, November 16, and will be put up against modern day shearing. Modern day shearing is electric but handwinder shearing is much more difficult as it requires the operator to keep it turning at a constant speed as
there is no electricity to generate the power. Canterbury Shears chairman Kelvyn Scott said the person operating it gets very tired turning the winder. “Even a rugby player would find it difficult.” Mr Scott said the old-fashioned twist was an important part of Cup and Show Week – as important as the decision to use an old-fashioned vehicle to transport Charles and Camilla. “They originally wanted to use a modern ute for carting them around.” Handwinder shearing is not used these days but will add to the show’s old-fashioned appeal as it celebrates 150 years.

Still in service: Locomotive D140 was built by Scott Brothers in Christchurch in 1887, one of 10 D engines the company built between 1884 and 1887. The 22-foot-long D140 is a small, general-purpose tank locomotive weighing 17 tons. It is characterised by its distinctive and somewhat unusual inclined cylinders and running plates. Engines of this class were used extensively to haul trains between Christchurch and Lyttelton. They were taken out of service and scrapped or disposed of by 1927 and replaced by newer, more powerful models. Overhauled and recommissioned in 2004, D140 is used regularly at Ferrymead Park.

Needs a home: Allie, thought to be eight to 10 years old, was found living under a property by an incoming tenant. When found, her claws were so overgrown they were cutting into the pads of her paws and she was underweight, but after a manicure and a good feed she’s looking better.
THE number of cats needing to be rehomed is on the rise as the residential red zones empty out, according to the Cats’ Protection League. Sandra Leys, a spokesperson for the league’s Christchurch branch, said many remaining red zone residents had been looking after cats for their neighbours who had left earlier. With fewer people remaining in these areas, there were fewer people to look after the cats. “We’re often getting between four and six cats from a household because the people just can’t take them with them.” Many people leaving the red zones moved into rental accommodation where cats were not allowed, or in other cases they were only able to take their own cats and not others. “It’s sort of unprecedented that you’ve got areas of people who have to surrender their cats. These are people who do not want to give

Cake decorating: From left, Jacqui, Katie and Charlotte Davies help decorate a giant cake to celebrate the first birthday of the Restart mall in Cashel Street on Saturday. The venture to create a colourful shopping precinct using shipping containers represented a new beginning in the business recovery of central Christchurch when it opened in October 2011, eight months after February’s devastating earthquake. Business originally signed leases for six months but the Restart precinct has endured and evolved over the year while the central city red zone has shrunk. Photo: Gilbert Wealleans

THE inventiveness and energy in Christchurch post-earthquakes has boosted the city in the ranks of popular travel guide Lonely Planet. The guide looks a year ahead at what is going to be trendy and Christchurch has been named sixth in the list of the top 10 cities to visit in 2013. Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism CEO Tim Hunter said the innovation following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes would attract tourists. Mr Hunter said there was more positive momentum in Christchurch rather than negative. “Energy and inventiveness is a really good reason for travellers to come here,” he said. This innovation is especially in areas close to the city such as Addington, which Lonely Planet has named one of New Zealand’s most hot and happening places. Mr Hunter said this was due to it being close

to Christchurch city and the plentitude of space available to businesses, as well as its many cafes, bars and restaurants. “It is a logical place for people to gravitate,” he said. There have also been plenty of restaurants being opened around the central city such as Fiddlesticks and the St Asaph St Kitchen and at least another four were due to open by the end of the year. These restaurants would tend to remain close to the city, Mr Hunter said. “Life in the suburbs is fun but not very sociable.” Mr Hunter said the initiative of the Ballantynes, Carter and Guthrey families to develop 25,000 square metres of the central city was positive as having such a large area being developed by one group of people would result in something

that was well thought out and architecturally attractive. In the meantime projects such as the Restart container mall and Gap Filler brought energy to the city, Mr Hunter said. The Gap Filler initiative to create community projects in the spaces left by demolished earthquakes and a fear the rebuild would be done quite hastily.
Big ideas wanted CHRISTCHURCH under-25-year-olds are being asked for ideas that will transform the south-east corner of the city into a fresh, vibrant and happening place for youth, with the best idea winning $5000. The ‘Big Idea’ campaign is the brain child of the CPIT Foundation. Chair Carl Pascoe said it aimed to give Christchurch’s young people an opportunity to put their stamp on their city. “We want the Big Idea to not only give young people a voice, we want to try and turn their Big Idea into a reality. This is a serious competition with the winner receiving $5000 as well as the support and backing of the CPIT Foundation to try and make their Big Idea happen. ”The top three Big Ideas will be presented by the Foundation to Canterbury decision makers at a formal function in December. We want those people to hear what young people want for their city and what they need in the city to encourage them to stay in Christchurch beyond their compulsory education.” The Big Idea can come from an individual or a group with entries closing on December 1. Cup Sweep
FOR THE BIG RACE 9x2 90mm high x 62.7mm wide
On the first Tuesday in November every year, at around 5pm, New Zealand and Australia come to a standstill for about three minutes for the call of the Melbourne Cup. One of the most common ways of placing a traditional bet, is by getting involved in a Melbourne Cup Sweep at your workplace, office or Cup Day BBQ.

A number of people each buy a ticket in the ‘sweep’. Tickets usually cost between $1 and $5 and represent a horse in the race. Tickets are drawn randomly and odds are ignored. The prize pool for the sweep is made up of money paid for the tickets. The winner usually receives half of the prize pool, second place gets about a third and the remainder of the pool goes to third place. Sometimes last place, or horses that are scratched get their money back.

1. Print off a free complete Cup Sweep form (Available online at www.racenet.com.au) 2. Set a ticket price e.g. usually between $1 and $5 3. If you have a large group you can run multiple sweeps with a different value e.g. a $1 sweep, a $2 sweep and for the ‘high rollers’ and $10 sweep 4. Sell tickets, allowing participants to draw their ticket randomly from a bowl. 5. The number on the ticket will correspond with the horse number. 6. You should record the ticket number for each person e.g. Fred has ticket number 2 in the $5 sweep 7. Once the race is run you can distribute the prize pool.

Making her mark in a male orientated industry Jessica Schaap jessica.s@mainlandpress.co.nz
BEFORE Diana Stil entered the demolition business, she said women were classed as “groupies” in an industry with “drugs, sex and rock and roll”. “I saw it and said this is going to change.” It’s this determination which has seen the managing director of Nikau Contractors win NEXT Woman of the Year in the business category. Diana and John Stil started the multi-million dollar demolition company 34 years ago in what she deemed a “male-orientated industry”. She brought about change by banning alcohol and drugs, giving staff food and making the company “like a family”. Although she enjoyed directing the company, the 55-year-old loved the practical side of demolitions and getting out of the office to operate the machinery. Prior to working for Nikau Contractors she worked with lawnmowers, tractors and in landscaping. The work hours of the demolition industry did not suit everyone but Diana made it suit her by working from 9am until 3pm so she could take care of her children. Diana believed women were important in the industry because they gave it accountability and structure. “The company is more professional, it’s got far more intellectual property,” she said. During the Christchurch earthquake search and rescue effort Nikau Contractors came down

from Auckland to demolish buildings for free. They offered to do the work for free, which she said was an example of her empathetic female management style coming into the decision making process. She said demolition companies did face criticisms and rumours but Nikau had procedures in place to prevent anything from going wrong; and workers act responsibly. NEXT Woman of the Year is a competition that has been run by Next magazine since 2010 to acknowledge and celebrate accomplished women across different categories.

A SCHOOL choir exchange that has been running for a decade is building confidence and friendships among the children of South Hornby Primary and an Adeleide school. South Hornby has been undertaking school choir exchanges with Hawthorndene School in Adeleide, South Australia, with the schools
alternating trips each October. Last week the Australian children were in Christchurch on the 10th exchange. Colour to bloom on vacant sites Planting fun: Rotary’s northern South Island governor Gordon Hooper, left, and Christchurch Central Member of Parliament Nicky Wagner do their bit towards helping Christchurch bloom by planting flowers in a vacant site on the corner of Brougham and Colombo streets on Saturday. More than 250 Rotarians from the city’s 17 clubs and 50 members of the Student Volunteer Army planted 5500 petunias and 1600 sunflowers, and spread wildflower seed over 4000sqm on 14 vacant blocks of Christchurch land that day. Most of the planting sites were in the central city. The Rotary clubs will continue to water and care for the plants, which are expected to flower in late November. Mr Hooper said Rotary’s Colour Me Christchurch project was designed to brighten up the city, give people a lift and put a smile on their faces. “We want to lead the community in doing something to help the city rather than leaving it all to the council. The Student Volunteer Army involvement is part of that – it shows that young people are just as community-minded and ready to help other people as any other group,” he said. Photo: Dion Crooks

Schools celebrate a decade of friendship Continued from page 1 at Templeton School and Hornby High School earlier this week. It began when South Hornby principal Lindsay Penman visited Adelaide as part of Christchurch’s sister city committee and sought out a sister school. Mr Penman said they raised $20,000 to send a group of about 25 students to Australia that first year and it has been a highlight of the school calendar ever since. “We have been across five times and this is their fifth time,” he said. Students are billeted in with school families and as well as performing their own diverse repertoires, the choirs also perform together. This year the South Hornby students
choreographed dance moves to Lady Gaga’s Born This Way and posted it as a video on YouTube for the Hawthorndene students to learn. Mr Penman said the choir children gained confidence from the experience. Hawthorndene Primary School principal Tania Leonard said both schools shared a passion for music and her students were blown away by the talent from Christchurch. Mrs Leonard said the choir had traditionally been more conservative but the South Hornby choir inspired them to try more “boisterous” songs. “The best times are at the school with the two choirs singing together and getting to know
each other and being inspired by each other.” Hawthorndene last came to Christchurch following the September 2010 earthquake and the February 2011 earthquake did not put them off returning this year. “It’s an added reason to continue doing this. They need to know…we care enough about what we do to come no matter what.” She said the exchanges sparked long-standing relationships between the families involved. Choir leader Iris Taramai, 10, said it was a good opportunity to combine choirs and share what they had been learning. “It’s very cool because you find out that Adelaide is quite different to Christchurch,” Iris said.

Dunedinite takes out Wigram Revival Champion: Steve Ross captured the Lady Wigram Trophy last weekend. Photo: Alex Mitchell
SUPERB weather accompanied a magnificent weekend of motorsport at Powerbuilt Tools Raceway, Ruapuna, celebrating the Wigram Revival historic and classic car and motorcycle race meeting last weekend. The event got underway on Saturday morning with a presentation by Mayor Bob Parker to motor race legend, 71-year-old Kenny Smith who continues to entertain Christchurch enthusiasts at the highest level. Still competing in two classes and fitter than most half his age, Smith defies advancing years and is a four-time winner of the Lady Wigram Trophy. He, once again, competed in the feature race and raced qualifiers and six races covering more than 60 laps at top speed. A large banner was presented to Smith thanking him for the entertainment he has provided to so many across more than 40 years of competing against the best in New Zealand. The introduction of the Formula Atlantic car class to this meeting provided the opportunity
for Smith to take out the Wigram Cup for Libre single seaters under 2500cc. He didn’t need any further encouragement and went on to win the cup and acknowledge the memory of John Hawkins, long-time motorsport scribe who passed away in 2011. It was a different story in the feature race, where the coveted Lady Wigram Trophy is awarded to the first Formula 5000 car home after 15 laps of the Powerbuilt circuit. Fifteen superbly presented historical big slicks, big wings and big engine period race cars thundered out of the starting blocks with pole sitter Steve Ross from Dunedin driving his yellow McRae GM1 leading the way. He had set best lap times and won the lead in races as his car and smooth driving dominated all weekend. The Wigram Revival meeting attracted over 200 drivers and riders from all corners of New Zealand and over 10,000 spectators across the three days.
We would like to hear from you!
Watch this space: Addington Action organiser Mike Peters, left, and builder Philip Nussbaumer discuss plans for the site of the group’s new base on Garlands Road, Opawa. Photo: Samantha Early
Empty space to become repair base Samantha Early samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz
ADDINGTON Action is well on its way to setting up a base from which it can efficiently organise earthquake repairs for up to 200 uninsured homes in South Christchurch. The group has just signed an agreement with the Christchurch City Council to lease a 1370square-metre section at 124 Garlands Road, Opawa, which used to contain a Scout den, for a peppercorn rental of $1 a year. It will serve as Addington Action’s base for the next five years and include a workshop, storage facilities, an office and canteen. Organiser Mike Peters said it followed efforts by the Spreydon Heathcote Community Board to find a suitable home for the community action group, which was set up in the wake of last February’s earthquake. Its activities include co-ordinating the Christchurch South Fruit and Vegetable co-op, which at present includes about 350 families, and offering free basic repairs to earthquakedamaged uninsured homes belonging to the elderly, disabled and single parents with young children. Mr Peters said they were keen to build the workshop by early December so they could complete as many repairs as possible before next winter. He said as well as the barn-style workshop, they would use recycled aluminium garages
from the residential red zone for storage. At the moment, the group’s resources were spread out between Mr Peters’ spare bedroom, five garages around Addington and some loaned corners in offices around south Christchurch. “The more stuff we get, the harder it gets to do anything because we have to go around five places to pick up all the materials.” Mr Peters said having everything on one site would allow them to do three times as much work with the same effort. The group was set to receive funding from the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal Trust of $80,000 for repairing the uninsured homes and $20,000 for administration costs like setting up the Garlands Rd base. Addington Action has repaired about 35 uninsured homes so far and hopes to fix 200 across South Christchurch. “The average is about one house on every street.” They currently have a waiting list of about 40 houses and they want to get the backlog down and their base set up before adding any more. “We are doing them to camping ground standard, making it nice, neat and tidy and dry and warm and safe. Plain and simple,” Mr Peters said.

Weeds be gone: Kiwicare’s Fiona Platt and Sydenham Quarter’s Alison Poulter were among those getting stuck in to spray weeds on overgrown vacant sections in Sydenham recently. The ‘war on weeds’ was part of local business group Sydenham Quarter’s efforts to tidy up the area, which had weeds
growing where buildings had been demolished due to earthquake damage. Sydenham Quarter is also in the process of organising a programme to rid the area of graffiti and put planter boxes along Colombo Street. Photo: Michelle Malone

Canterbury three-time AFL champs THE Canterbury Cobras AFL (Aussie Rules) team defended their National Provincial Championship title at Parrs Park in Auckland on the weekend. Playing against the cream of AFL from Auckland, Wellington, Waikato and Otago, the Canterbury Cobras played four tough games and won them all convincingly. Canterbury AFL won the championship for the first time in 2010 at home, defended it in windy Wellington in 2011 and had to fight in driving rain in Auckland to win their third title on the trot. Saturday saw fast flowing footy with the opening game against Auckland a ferocious affair with plenty of hard tackling, courageous marks and hard support running. After the satisfying victory against Auckland,
‘
Canterbury was surprisingly under pressure in the second game from debutant Otago. Sunday’s weather was atrocious with sheeting rain levelling the skills of the teams down to determination. The game against Waikato was put beyond doubt early but as Wellington beat Auckland by one point the final game was between the two undefeated teams – Wellington and Canterbury. The wet slog was even at half time but the Cobras pulled away in the second spell, emerging victorious by 18. Super Coach Harry Peterson did not let the players forget what they came to do, with his mantra of ‘Believe to Achieve’. Josh Robles-McGill and Sean Butler were selected to train with the New Zealand under20s.

Road cycling’s ‘darkest hour’? call for the heads of cycling, namely the president of the UCI (International Cycling Union) Pat McQuaid to resign. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that during the darkest years of doping the UCI stood by accepting and allowing it to happen. To rub salt in the wound (until an external investigation commission established only last Friday to examine various allegations made about UCI relating to the Armstrong affair), only the bare minimum - ratifying USADAs Armstrong ban - had been achieved. What looks increasingly more essential to cycling’s future is a ‘truth and reconciliation’ process which would weed out not only past dopers but also those responsible in cycling organisations that have allowed doping to occur (doctors, team managers and coaches). Those guilty might not necessarily need to leave the sport but come to justice. Only this way will Armstrong’s fall from grace and cycling’s ‘introspective hour’ be fair and worthwhile.

ROAD cycling has come under intense scrutiny through public and social media recently. I refrain from seeing it as road cycling’s ‘darkest hour’ but a time to gain a thorough introspective into it. Not many sports have been through such a global crisis like this that provides an opportunity to truly improve its morality and market share of the sporting world. But, and it’s a big but, sacrifice must be made, not acceptance and now. I know Lance Armstrong’s fall from grace hurt so many cycling fans, but the writing was on the wall. Current Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins put it best by likening him to Father Christmas: “As you grow up and time passes you come to believe in him less and less.” So too with a man’s performances achieved while the majority of his competitors and team-mates were linked to infamous ‘drug doctors’ or convicted for doping. This introspective period has illuminated a previously suppressed opinion that dopers past and present should be banned and a

yummy YAMS Rachel Vogan gives her reasons for growing New Zealand yams or oca.
I ADORE yams. Roasted with honey is one of
my favourite ways of eating them, or they can be grated raw into salads, or simply sautéed in butter. Yams (Oxalis tuberosa), increasingly marketed as oca, are a versatile and tasty vegetable, which contain vitamin A, vitamin B6, fibre and potassium. Although a fairly easy crop to grow, be aware that as they are a member of the oxalis family, it means that once you have them planted in the garden it’s more than likely you always will have yams. This may not be a problem if you love yams, as the small ones that get left behind in the soil when you harvest will sprout and re-grow next season. I am just about to plant my first crop of yams in my new garden. After perusing the vegetable patch for a suitable spot, I have selected a sunny position, where the soil is loose to a depth of the spade (30cm), and I’ve dug in plenty of sheep pellets, potato fertiliser and watered the area well. I find it works best if this is done a week before planting. New Zealand yams, which originated in the Andes region of South America, are not related to the tropical yams grown in other cultures. In North America, and hence American recipe books, the vegetables known as “yams” are what we would call sweet potatoes or kumara.
SUMMER FAMILY FUN WITH BAYLINER NEW
Sprouting Sprout yams like you would potatoes and plant out in loose, well-dug soil once finger-length shoots appear. If you struggle to find yam tubers at your garden centre, try sprouting some of the supermarket tubers, which come in orange-red, yellow and apricot. The crop probably won’t be as plentiful, but will taste good all the same. Planting Ensure the area where you will plant your yams receives all-day sun. Plant yams in furrows or rows approximately 15cm deep with sprouts facing up, 50cm apart. Don’t panic if the shoots break off at planting time, as more will appear in a few weeks. As yams push through the soil, mound them up as you would potatoes. Oca take approximately six months to mature. Water well through dry periods and protect young shoots from slugs and snails. Harvest once leaves start to die down or turn yellow in the autumn or early winter. I leave mine in the ground all winter as the soil doesn’t get too wet and it saves me having to find somewhere dry and dark to store them. Yams by the barrow load To avoid yams taking over the garden, plant them

in deep containers or pots. Recycle an old drum, bathtub, water trough or deep wheelbarrow tray. Two seasons ago I was short on vegetable bed space and needed something for our yams. I found three old wheelbarrows under the hedge (yes I am a classic hoarder). The barrows had holes drilled in the bottom of the trays and I filled them with a blend of vegetable potting mix, compost and pelletised pea straw. The pea straw was brilliant as it helped the soil hold its moisture for longer. Each barrow produced between 30 and 50 yams, a pretty good effort. In between the yams, I planted basil and because the foliage of the yams protected the basil, and it was a win-win for both crops.

A new hairstyle will give you a lift in your step
A
new hairdressing salon has opened in the heart of Sockburn, Cut Colour, at 40 Hayton Road. Professional hair stylist Deborah Lange owned a salon in Avonside until the February 2011 earthquake and then worked as a hairdresser for a friend in Richmond before making the move to start up her own business again. Her former clients still travel west to see her. The location opposite Mainfreight is surrounded by businesses and she is starting to build up her regulars after only opening
Cut Colour in September. Keune hair products are stocked at the salon with the extensive So Pure, Design and Care Line ranges offering a perfect solution to any hair type or issue. Keune Haircosmetics is a Dutch family-owned business specialising in hair care products for the professional hairstylist. So Pure, which is paraben free, is one of Deborah’s favourites. “With all the silt and sand in the air, particularly in the eastern suburbs, people are finding they are suffering from scalp

problems such as dandruff and alopecia. Without the paraben, So Pure doesn’t lather up like other shampoos and is really gentle on the scalp.” Chlorine in the water for many residents also means that their hair is dry and damaged, and Keune’s So Pure can also help there. Summer is a great time to visit Cut Colour. Let them create for you a new look for the warmer weather ahead or Christmas party. Deborah offers the full range of hairdressing service from buzz cuts, children’s haircuts through to colours and perms. Future plans for the new salon include offering beauty therapy treatments. Bringing in photographs to the salon helps Deborah with creating your favourite style. “I can then have a chat with my clients about what would suit their colouring and face shape,” she says. With parking outside, Cut Colour is in a group of new buildings off the main road at 10/40 Hayton Road, opposite Mainfreight. Cut Colour is open Tuesday to Friday, 10am until 5.30pm with late nights Tuesday and Thursday, and 10am until 2pm on Saturdays. Phone Deborah now to make an appointment on 343 4999.

Eyes made up
F
rom dramatic golden looks to subtle pastel tones there’s definitely an eyeshadow trend to suit everyone this season! Colours span the palette from sensuous teal through to gold and silver metallic, creamy neutrals and pretty pastels. Metal-toned eyeshadow is one of the hottest trends. A reflective wash of white silver adds sparkle and dimension to the eyelid and is the perfect party look for those long summer nights. You can even add a soft wash of metallic colour on your lids to open up your eyes. If you go for a bold look remember that less is more and pair dramatic eyes with neutral lips. Dramatic gold-leaf eyeshadow creations were spotted on the catwalks this season. To convert this intense look into an everyday style go for soft golden tones which can add a sense of flair and warmth to your summer look.
City of Ink INVEST IN THE BEST
Pastel shades have been popping up everywhere. Easter egg-like hues add charm and subtle romance to provide an ultrafeminine look. Soft pinks, mint greens and sunny yellows are just a few of the new colours to grace makeup palettes this season. Cream shadows are an easier way to wear this trend as they are longer-wearing than traditional powder-based shadows. Stick with one soft wash of pastel over the entire lid and go for a soft lip to avoid an unnatural look. Light to medium skin tones should opt for lighter pastel hues while darker skin tones can try out the deeper shades. Soft pinks, lavender and turquoise suit most skin tones. The double-edged cat eye eyeliner look is also very popular this summer. You can achieve this look by adding an extra wing at the top and bottom end of your eyeliner to give extra drama. This bold trend works best for evening and looks hot paired with red lips and a little black dress!

llesmere Butchery, on the main road of Leeston, has every reason to gloat; they are an award-winning butchery for its bacon and ham. For the last three years, owners Chris and Sue Brown have won eight awards for their bacon and ham, including Bacon of the Year 2012 and more recently as a gold medallist for their Sugar Cured Ham on the Bone. The awards prove the quality of Ellesmere meats have consistently been a class above the rest. Their award-winning results mean they are constantly raising the bar as bacon and ham manufacturers. Why go anywhere else for your ham and bacon?

Don’t miss out, pre-order now for Christmas. Why pay up to $20 a kilogram for traditional hams somewhere else when you can get the best in New Zealand for only $15.50 a kilogram? At Ellesmere Butchery, they also stock free range chickens and turkeys – perfect for a Christmas feast! The butchery is always progressing forward and recently set up an online service, selling traditional meat cuts to the whole of New Zealand – a perfect opportunity to order online and be prepared for Christmas without even leaving your house! “It is a natural extension of the developments already introduced at the
butchery,” says Chris. Online orders will be freighted anywhere in New Zealand, with no minimum order. “The more you buy the cheaper it gets, because there’s a set freight cost which we have to pass on.” Orders up to 20 kilograms will be freighted through New Zealand Couriers, packed in polybins and ice. Customers can go online to the website, create an account by providing an email address, name and a delivery address and activate the online payment gateway for the purchase to be made and supplied. “I can give the whole country access through a nice and easy streamlined system, and there is a full replacement guarantee on products, along with exclusive online specials and competitions.” With the addition, too, of a free local delivery service five days a week – starting with Lincoln - means Ellesmere Butchery has expanded their staff to 10, including alongside Chris, a butcher and apprentice, three shop staff and part-time staff. Online shoppers should order through ellesmerebutchery.com, or ellesmerebutchery.co.nz. Phone Chris, or Sue at (03) 324 3419.

eading the way in Christchurch’s bespoke home’s market, multi-award winning Master Builders MBL specialise in “attaining excellence” - creating utopian homes of sheer indulgence, superior craftsmanship and architectural brilliance, designed by MCD Architecture. You wouldn’t expect anything less from the builder’s own home! Of striking form, this spectacular home won a National Award in 2009. Substantial in size - 408m2 split over two levels, situated on an equally spectacular 1440m2 section with dress circle views over the adjoining Styx reserve. Winner of the 2009 ‘Heart of the Home Kitchen Award’, the gourmet kitchen truly is the heart of the home with a series of sumptuous entertaining and living zones radiating off the central hub. A dining room with double-sided gas fire, family room, lounge, media room with projector screen, bar and mirrored fireplace, wine cellar and study with built in storage offer versatility and options abound. In the kitchen, Caesar stone work benches, a walk-in butler’s pantry and top of the range in-built appliances such as double fridge, double oven and coffee machine are just starters to tantalise the chef of the family! ‘External rooms’ have been cleverly incorporated into the design, featuring a stunning louvred dining area with TV, multiple patios and decks, an in-ground swim/spa pool and soothing water features, to offer
the optimum indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Generous bedroom accommodation is serviced by three luxurious bathrooms; the Master suite encapsulates the essence of sheer indulgence with its balcony, in-built TV and gas fire and exquisite bathroom with free standing feature bath, double vanity and extra large double shower. The attention to detail throughout is exceptional and whilst thoughtful considerations such as surround sound in eight zones, underfloor heating, ambient lighting and garaging large enough for all the toys can be highlighted, words cannot truly do justice to subtleties of the innovative design. Screen and show hits to feature at cabaret PROFESSIONAL actress and singer Ali Harper is bringing her popular cabaret show back to Christchurch, Akaroa and Rangiora this month. She will perform a selection of well-known songs from leading ladies of stage and screen including Doris Day, Edith Piaf and Shirley Bassey. Harper recently appeared in Tim Beveridge’s The Music is Bond, James Bond at the CBS Arena. For the upcoming concerts she will return to more intimate venues - Heaton Intermediate Performance Centre, the Northbrook Chapel in Rangiora and St Peter’s Church in Akaroa. Internationally recognised vocalist and musician Matthew Pike, who is well-known to audiences across the country (Miss Saigon, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cabaret, CATS), will join Harper for these shows, accompanied by talented pianist Max Tocker. Harper has been performing professionally since 1991 and her versatility and ability has seen her in great demand as an artist, appearing around New Zealand in theatre, cabaret and television. She has worked at many of New Zealand’s professional theatre companies and performed in a number of the world’s great musicals. Her leading lady performances include My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Guys
and Dolls, Sweeney Todd and Tell Me On a Sunday. In 2005 she travelled to New York to perform at the Yale Cabaret Conference and has an open invitation to return to perform in New York City. Her New Zealand national tours include Chess and playing the alternate Eva Peron in Evita. Here in Christchurch she appeared in the recent Court Theatre productions A Shortcut to Happiness, Side by Side by Sondheim and Calendar Girls. NEVER MIND THE WEATHER David Loyd is the creator of unique garden art and sculpture. He is constantly on the look out for new discoveries, both in subject matter and artistic techniques. David’s creativity is ignited by nature. He fills his art with flora and fauna which he brings to life in intriguing and humorous ways. Born in England, he moved to N.Z in the early 70s. His early work was in the arts and craft arena, exploring several different mediums including leather, glass, wood and metals. David’s interests have shifted from the production of the functional; footwear, leather bags, glass lighting fixtures and jewellery to the more whimsical, using recycled materials with a mainly sculptural focus. David says “There are certain things in our day to day lives that we just have to do, “Never mind the weather” Getting in wood for the winter fire, shopping and paying bills. The seasons come and go with all the ferocity nature can chuck at us sometimes, we, like our animal friends just have to carry on. As I watched a pair of starlings building their nest one wintry morning as the rain and wind lashed against the bedroom window, making it difficult for them even to fly, they returned frequently with beaks full of nesting materials......they carry on regardless of the weather. Watching seabirds as they search for food on the stormy ocean buffeted by high winds and huge waves. They don’t worry about the weather either. We have all been through a lot in the last couple of years, and have been forced to make changes and accept life as it is now with all its complex issues and compounded difficulties”. We too have to carry on.” Never mind the weather”

What a legacy…five in a row ON Saturday evening at AMI Stadium (in Addington!) the Canterbury men’s rugby team wrote themselves into the history books. By winning their fifth straight ITM Cup for provincial supremacy these young men proved once again that hard work and self-belief are still the attributes required to be crowned champions. Coach Tabai Matson must be pinching himself that success has come in his first year as coach in charge. As he approached the 2012 season he was probably quite prepared to play second fiddle to master coach Rob Penney for yet another season. Let’s face it, Penney had led his charges to four straight titles and everyone assumed he would be holding the reigns yet again. Fate and circumstances can be funny things.

Penney applied for and was appointed head coach for the Munster team in Ireland and as a result had to resign as the Canterbury coach. Into the fray stepped Matson. He had obviously hung on every word Penney delivered over the past four years as he took on the role like you do with your favourite pair of old slippers. Having covered twenty weeks of Hawkins Cup Metro rugby this season, I found it hard to see where the players would come from to mould into a successful ITM Cup squad. Not many players stood out in the senior competition and with the All Blacks not available for ITM Cup where would Matson get a champion team from? This is where the famous “culture” that surrounds Canterbury rugby once again came

to the fore. It is an intangible, invisible part of the aura that is here in Canterbury, and Matson’s young and somewhat inexperienced squad bought into it in spades. There were many times in a compressed, gruelling campaign that the players and coaching staff were forced to dig deep into the recesses of past history. There has been a saying in red and black rugby for years that “the current players don’t own the jersey but are merely custodians for those that have gone ahead of them”. At no time has this been truer than in the current season. Everyone involved in the 2012 campaign can take huge pride in what they have achieved and be mindful that they have kept alive the heritage of what has gone on down here, long before they have had a taste of success.

Pedro’s back Outpouring of support from local businesses, friends and customers Help from friends: LK Carlton store ambassador Andy Gutschlag, left, with Pedro Carazo at his new venture, Pedro’s House of Lamb. A picture of Pedro’s old restaurant, which was destroyed in the February 2011 earthquake, is shown behind. Photo: Samantha Early
Samantha Early | samantha@mainlandpress.co.nz
PEDRO Carazo greets an old friend with a warm hug, while the aroma of roasting lamb wafts through the air. It’s a scene which could have been repeated hundreds of times over the past 30 years in Pedro’s central city restaurant, as generations of families enjoyed his Spanish cuisine. But this time it’s different. It’s in a car park outside a liquor store. The popular restaurateur lost his home, his business and his son in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake. When Mainland Press’ sister publication, CC Magazine, last caught up with him in December 2010 he was buoyed by the support of his customers following the September 4 earthquake. He spoke proudly of his children, including 35-year-old language teacher Christian who was among the 115 killed in the CTV building collapse. His friends, business associates and customers stuck by him again and with their help he’s back in business, opening Pedro’s House of Lamb this week, providing takeaway meals from a
container in the car park of Liquor King (LK) Carlton, at 17 Papanui Road. “I’m thrilled, my customers have been fantastic, with people ringing and congratulating me for starting something again.” One of this week’s first customers, Stacey Trott of Merivale, was ordering lamb for dinner at the request of her husband. “It’s fantastic. It’s exactly what the city needs, these sort of little food shops opening up and Pedro’s restaurant was always fantastic, we used to go there quite a bit and his lamb is to die for.” Pedro jokes the idea might catch on. “You never know, maybe we are going to be the new McDonald’s, with New Zealand lamb cooked in the Spanish way.” It’s a start, he says, something to keep him going for the next couple of years until he can open another permanent restaurant. “Not only for the money, for the mind” He had hoped to rebuild on his old Worcester Street site
and during a trip to Spain this year had filled a container with memorabilia for the new restaurant, but his plans went back to square one after the site fell within the green frame in the Central City plan. LK Carlton store ambassador Andy Gutschlag said they jumped at the chance to help Pedro as they had all enjoyed his cuisine. They would sell a selection of Spanish wine to accompany the food and were offering him his first three months rent free. “He is a fantastic match for our business; we really wanted to help a local business as it gets back on its feet.” Because Pedro had his restaurant for so long, customers felt like friends and family. “The only problem is to remember some of the names, there are so many.” By the time Pedro, 67, is likely to re-establish a permanent restaurant, he will be pushing 70. But this doesn’t faze him. “Why not?” he asks. “I’m not retired from food or cooking. It’s my life.”

Winning bakers: Laura McIntosh, left, Nicky Rough, and Mayleen Russell with judge Jo Seagar. Photo: Christine de Felice
COOKING star Jo Seagar found it hard to choose between the final three entries at Monday’s bake off at Burwood Hospital. As the guest judge for the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit’s final staff bake off she was tasked with judging the entries – variations on a fruit pie – on both appearance and taste. She described each entry as “delicious”. The bake off was the initiative of the unit’s Bun Club, which was set up in June 2011 by charge nurse manager Christine Fry to help staff get through the aftermath of the February 2011 earthquake. “It was part of our ‘making time for care’ programme, which is based on the principles of the Fish philosophy that are about staff choosing their attitude and enjoying their work, plus it was about having fun,” charge nurse Fry said. Nurse Nicky Rough was also involved in organising the competition. The bake off involved several rounds, in which participants paired up to prepare either a savoury or sweet dish that they brought in for morning tea. Entries were anonymous and staff members voted on the two they liked best. The ‘winners’ then went through to the next round. The unit’s senior clinical psychologist,
Dr Joyce Alberts, said there were many therapeutic benefits to preparing food and sharing it. “It’s been a way of pulling together through doing something fun. It’s also been a great way to cope and get over the quakes, as resuming normal activities and socialising together is an effective coping strategy. The bake off has been fantastic, staff have produced some outstanding efforts and at times the voting was very close,” Dr Alberts said. The three finalists, all nurses from the unit, were Nicky Rough, Mayleen Russell and Laura McIntosh. After tasting each entry, which were marked A, B and C, Mrs Seager selected Nurse Rough’s as the winner, with the other two being judged second-equal. She said they were all of a high enough standard to serve in her café and it was hard to separate them. Following the judging, staff and patients joined in a morning tea, where they sampled the competition entries as well as other food brought in by staff members. Community input called for COMMUNITY views are being sought on the recovery and future management of three reserves in South New Brighton – Blighs Garden, Bridge Reserve and South New Brighton Park. The three reserves were severely impacted by the Canterbury earthquakes and now look very different following the removal of hundreds of earthquake-affected trees. The council is seeking community input into the preparation of a new management plan for the reserves that will take account of all the changes occurring in the reserves and allow recovery work to progress. The management plan will identify values and establish a vision for the area. It will
determine the recreation, landscape and environmental outcomes to be achieved and establish policies to enable the reserves to be developed appropriately. A development plan will also be prepared. The community is invited to get involved and offer suggestions on replanting and potential new recreation activities and facilities. There is a community workshop on tonight starting at 7pm at South New Brighton School Performing Arts Room. Further information about the consultation and suggestion forms are on the council’s ‘Have Your Say’ website: www.ccc. govt.nz/haveyoursay. Closing date for suggestions is Friday, December 14.

TWO teams of Mairehau High School science students from year 9 and year 10 joined teams from other Christchurch schools at Russley Primary School last week for the annual BP Challenge. The teams were selected to compete in the challenge following a competition at school. For the BP Challenge the teams of four students had been given three tasks to carry out using only newspaper, cello tape, string and paperclips. The first challenge, which they completed at school prior to the event, was to design a tower that would allow a marble to travel downwards in no fewer than five seconds, but not much more. The devices also had to conform to design specifications, and the marble had to pass through one of several holes in a sheet of cardboard. The second challenge, which the students knew about and were able to practise in advance, was to create a

Finally, there was a mystery challenge, which involved building a fishing rod and ‘fishing’. The Mairehau year 9 team came about mid-field in the overall competition, science teacher Nigel Carter said, and the year 10 team was the winner. Their prize was $100 for the school and a $20 gift voucher for each team member. Individual students also won minor prizes, Mr Carter said. It was the second time the school had entered the challenge and the first time they had been successful, he said. Sponsored by BP Oil NZ Ltd, the challenge is held in 35 regions around the country.

Safety message for Guy Fawkes night PLUNKET’S national child safety advisor, Sue Campbell, urges families to take care and be responsible with fireworks this Guy Fawkes. Plunket encourages people to attend public displays, where neighbours and friends can meet and enjoy the occasion safely. “Fireworks are fascinating and exciting but can be terrifying for young children,” Ms Campbell said. “Adult supervision is vital, and if families choose to celebrate Guy Fawkes there are some precautions they can take to keep everyone safe. “For families that prefer to buy their own, use a torch to read and follow the instructions on fireworks
before using them, never attempt to relight a firework that hasn’t gone off and never point them at people. Also, always keep a bucket of water or a hose handy. “Excitement is high and it is often easy to forget the simple safety precautions that make the fireworks experience safe and fun for littlies. “Children will often copy adults, so it is important that you keep fireworks, matches and lighters well out of reach of children and have a responsible adult supervising children at all times.” A public fireworks display is being held on Monday, November 5 on New Brighton beach, starting at 9pm.

Trust expands into budget advice ESTABLISHED in 2003 by Mike and Chris Thomas, the New Brighton-based Compassion Trust began by hosting community meals for families and individuals in need. In 2006 they started delivering school lunches to low-income families and within three years Compassion Trust was providing school lunches to 150 children each week. The Christchurch earthquakes forced a change of focus for the trust, when they found the most urgent need was financial assistance. In response to that need, this month they established a free community budget advice service to support people living in the eastern suburbs. The team at Compassion Trust are not just budget advisors, but a group of trained volunteers passionate about rebuilding people’s

lives, trust coordinator Natasha Graham said. “We offer support and education to address debt while bringing clarity and understanding around weekly budget planning. We are a community of people serving our local community, and our service is the only one of its kind based in the area. “In journeying with our clients the trust aims to address the issues of poverty holistically, to help break the poverty cycle and empower the following generations,” Ms Graham said. The service offers budget advice, debt management, insolvency and advocacy with government agencies. You can make an appointment by contacting the office, which is located within Grace Vineyard Church Beach Campus, 111 Seaview Road, New Brighton, phone 388 5459.

Food Bank boosted for City Mission NOW OPEN
Rishi Patel, year 13, Shirley BHS
FOLLOWING the series of earthquakes Canterbury has endured through 2010 and 2011, the Shirley BHS Heads of House decided to remove the popular House Food Bank competition as they realised that many families were going through tough times themselves. In 2012 Shirley BHS teachers Phil Dixon (Mullins House), Scott Howell (Rutherford House) and Rob Wilson-Pyne (Snell House) brought this competition back to an in-house level. Form classes within these houses competed for various trophies, cups and shields. By the end of term 3, each house had collected close to 500 items. At the start of term 4, a City Mission van collected the approximately 1500 donated food items. Many boys at Shirley were happy to contribute since the City Mission had delivered food items to their neighbourhoods on the east side in the days after the major earthquakes in 2010 and 2011.

Dunedinite takes out Wigram Revival SUPERB weather accompanied a magnificent weekend of motorsport at Powerbuilt Tools Raceway, Ruapuna, celebrating the Wigram Revival historic and classic car and motorcycle race meeting last weekend. The event got underway on Saturday morning with a presentation by Mayor Bob Parker to motor race legend, 71-year-old Kenny Smith, who continues to entertain Christchurch enthusiasts at the highest level. The introduction of the Formula Atlantic car class to this meeting provided the opportunity for Smith to take out the Wigram Cup for Libre single seaters under 2500cc.

The Wigram Revival meeting attracted over 200 drivers and riders from all corners of New Zealand and over 10,000 spectators across the three days.

Bidding farewell to QE11 Christine de Felice
THE public were invited to spend time at QE11 Park last Sunday afternoon to have a last look round and say their farewells before the facilities are completely demolished following extensive earthquake damage. Built for the 1974 Commonwealth Games, QE11 had provided local residents, as well as athletes and sportspeople from around the city, with sporting and recreational facilities up till the February 2011 quake. Jo Zervos, a member of the group, Keep QE11 in the east, set up a photographic display of past events and invited people to express their wishes on what they would like to see replacing
the park “The chair of the community board, Linda Stewart, asked us to come along on Sunday and get opinions from people to let the council know we’re still on the case,” Ms Zervos said. She estimated about 200 people were at the park over the two hours between 2pm and 4pm. There were a range of ideas suggested, Ms Zervos said. Some people wanted a 50-metre pool, while others weren’t so concerned about that. There were calls for a training pool, squash courts and gym facilities. Ms Zervos said the council had agreed to make $35 million available for building a replacement facility.
Protesting voices: From left; Nell, “Definitely keep it in the east.” Nellie, “How dare they knock it down.” and Joke, “Mother Nature was not kind to us. It was my second home for 24 and a half years, and I miss it every day.”
She said the main concern for people was the time it wold take for the facility to be built. “They want it as soon as possible. They don’t want to be waiting for five years for it to be built. In the City Plan we were given a time frame that work would start early next year.” Another concern expressed was about the land being sold off and divided up, Ms Zervos said. “People want it to be kept it as a place for recreational activities, but time will tell what will happen.” Mainland Press photographer Gilbert Wealleans spoke to visitors about their feelings on the demise of QE11 Park.
Future?: Left, Mary Young, “If the ground is not suitable, then it should not be rebuilt here, but I’d like to know what is going to be done with the space.” Unhappy: Right, Margaret Hammill, “It is very upsetting to see it being bulldozed. I think that they should rebuild it, because they can build things stronger and bigger these days.”
We would like to hear from you! Needed: Lynette Telford, “I think it is really tragic. I moved here because of QE2, and my two girls learnt to swim here. We really need something like this here in the east and the schools need the pools, it is too dangerous for children to be near the beach without learning to swim in a pool.”
We want your opinions about the progress of the Recovery. The Wellbeing Survey, which is online now until 2 November, will help CERA and its partner agencies to better understand people’s perceptions and experiences. With your help, we’ll be able to identify what’s working well, and if we need to put more support, assistance and resources into particular areas.

Papanui High student wins national oratory contest Speech champ: Shayla Fiaui displays the trophies she received from winning the junior English division of the regional and national Manu Kōrero. Papanui High School will keep the travelling national trophy for a year. Photo: Chelsea Shover
Chelsea Shover
WITH a powerful singing voice and powerful message, Shayla Fiaui is used to moving listeners to tears. The year 10 student at Papanui High School recently won the junior English division of the national Manu Kōrero, a secondary school oratory competition. Incorporating two songs into her sixminute oration, Shayla spoke on the topic of ‘Erase your fears: your problem solver is here’. She was the first Papanui High student to
attend nationals in recent years, head of the school’s Māori department Larry Thompson said. “Shayla put Papanui back on the map,” Kirsten Aumua, a kaiawhina in the Māori Department said. Shayla practised by delivering her speech to classes and guests. “They all wanted to hear her speech,” Ms Aumua said. “It was inspirational.” Shayla also competed in Kapa Haka nationals earlier in the year. She said she came from a very musical
family, and oration seemed to be in her genes as well. Her brother also reached the national Manu Kōrero in 2008 after winning the Auckland regional competitions in speech and impromptu. Accompanying Shayla to the national competition in Nelson were nine of her fellow students, along with staff. The speeches were judged on an Olympic points scale. “She was up against some very tough competition,” Mr Thompson said. Continued on page 2

“There were two other students who could have won.” But Shayla pulled through just two marks ahead of the second-place finisher and three ahead of third place with a score of 272. She was already looking forward to next year, when she would have the chance to compete in the impromptu senior division. All the pressure comes in the last 10 minutes before it’s time to go on stage, she said, as ideas and adrenaline flow. And afterwards? Shayla said, with a laugh, she had her whole life planned out. “I want to go to uni and study medicine to become a doctor.”
Community event brings Riccarton residents together Jessica Schaap
OUR Riccarton, Our Community, Let’s Have fun was held on Saturday from 2pm-4pm at Harrington Park in Riccarton. The event celebrated age and cultural diversity with ethnic food, a free barbecue, a police fitness course, free popcorn, music and cultural items including school performances, a kapa haka and a Korean group. A small committee came together to organise the event following talk in the community about what could be done to get the Riccarton community together and celebrate the area’s increasing diversity and change. It was supported and organised by Oak Development Trust, Riccarton Baptist, Riccarton St James, Riccarton West Neighbourhood Policing Team, Christchurch City Council and Cera.
EDGEWARE is the first suburb to receive revitalisation funding from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust. Edgeware Village will receive a $10,000 grant. Along with funds from the Canterbury Business Recovery Trust as well as the businesses themselves, the money will go towards a promotional campaign consisting of mailbox drops, advertising, a website and Edgeware Village brand, physical signage and a pre-Christmas event. The grant is part of a programme the trust announced last month to give away up to $140,000 in grants to help revitalise earthquake-affected suburban precincts. Recover Canterbury is distributing the funding to applicants approved by the trust. Edgeware Business Association spokesperson Chris Timbs said the grant would greatly benefit the businesses in Edgeware, particularly those just reopening. Edgeware Business Association formed following the earthquakes to help businesses cope with forced closures, customer flight and disruption of infrastructure. A number of other precincts are eligible to receive funding from the trust, and so far Recover Canterbury has been working with Rangiora, Papanui, Merivale, Sydenham, Lyttelton and Kaiapoi.

Ferndale unit gets sunny garden at Wairakei Gorgeous garden: Incorporating design ideas from students, Salvation Army’s Deliberate Acts of Love To All (DALTA) group recently completed a garden at the entrance of Wairakei School’s Ferndale School Satellite Unit. Wairakei School principal Shane Buckner said the garden was gorgeous and would provide a variety of sensory experiences. “From a drab, almost institutional looking entrance, the transformation to a calming and welcoming garden area in which to enjoy the sun is truly inspirational,” he said.

We would like to hear from you!

Rezoning proposed for North West area of Christchurch THE North West area of Christchurch may be rezoned to accommodate business space in the area. After a study of the area the Christchurch City Council has given approval for staff to proceed with work on the proposed rezoning of the North West Area. The area includes about 15 hectares for industrial business purposes at 711 Johns Road, approximately 50 hectares for industrial business purposes, north of Wairakei Rd between Woolridge Rd and Russley Rd and approximately 35 hectares for industrial business purposes, between Hawthornden Rd and Russley Rd. The council has directed staff to consult the Fendalton/Waimairi and Shirley/Papanui Community Boards, residents and affected parties before the draft proposed plan change goes to the Planning Committee for approval to notify for formal consultation. Other areas of the North West Review Area (NWRA) will also be up for review as a special ‘rural-urban fringe zone’. As part of the council’s District Plan Review, this will begin in 2014. The council wants to make space for proposed increase in demand for business space due to loss of business in the Christchurch City Council as well as maintaining the natural and physical resources. The NWRA is an area of approximately 860

hectares situated between the airport and the city’s urban edge. It extends for approximately 10 kilometres along State Highway 1 between Yaldhurst Rd in the south and Johns Rd, adjacent to The Groynes/Clearwater, in the north.
Playtime with tennis ball trees Jessica Schaap
TENNIS ball trees were erected at the Groynes on Saturday as an opportunity for Cantabrians and their dogs to play more. This event resulted from a survey by Beneful that found 60 per cent of Kiwis don’t think they play enough – even though 94 per cent of them agree that including play in your day is important for mental, physical and emotional health. Almost 80 per cent of people agree that having a dog makes you play more. Pet care expert Shivaun Statham, who specialises in dog behaviour, was also there to provide expert advice on dogs and cats. She said the event was beneficial for owners and their dogs as it was more stimulating than just walking your dog and it increased the bond between dogs and their owners.
Playful pets: Dogs play around the tennis ball trees at the Groynes on Saturday.
Students take on science challenges Chelsea Shover
STUDENTS arrived at Russley Primary School last week ready to tackle practised tasks and solve mystery problems in the annual BP Challenge. “They’ve done a lot of designing and problem solving,” Christchurch co-ordinator of the challenge, Warren Bruce said. It is sponsored by BP Oil NZ Ltd and held in 35 regions around the country. Teams of four students arrived with contraptions built from newspaper, cello tape, string and paperclips that would allow a marble to travel down in no less than five seconds. The devices also had to conform to design specifications, and to succeed at the challenge, they had to send the marble through one of several holes in a sheet of cardboard. Natasha Young, a year 7 student at Casebrook Intermediate, said her team based their successful design on a basic marble run. She said the idea mostly worked on the first try, but it took three or four iterations and a month of practising to get the marble to roll down consistently without getting blocked. Next, the students faced the “known and practised challenge” of building a device to pick up as many table tennis balls as possible from a plate in three minutes at a distance of two metres. Finally, they had a go at a mystery challenge, which involved building a fishing rod. A team from Mairehau High School won the morning’s year 9 and 10 competition, and
High rollers: The team from Emmanuel Christian School won the primary division of the BP Challenge. A University of Canterbury student in the teacher-training programme helped the team set up their pre-made marble track for the first challenge.
Emmanuel Christian School won the afternoon’s contest for students in years five through eight. Canterbury Science Teachers Association sponsored prizes for teams and individual students.
