United States soldiers were officially welcomed to Burnham Military Camp on Monday, in the lead-up to the first joint military exercise between the two countries in 26 years. The contingent of 41 soldiers are from third platoon, Alpha company of the 1st battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment (known as The Wolfhounds), based in Ohau, Hawaii. They are staying at Burnham to train and prepare for an exercise to be held in the central North Island later this month, dubbed ‘Alam Halfa’ after the site of a New Zealand army assault in Egypt during the battle of El Alamein in 1942. US Army Major Tom Harris said working with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) would be valuable opportunity for both sides to develop tactics, techniques and procedures. “We’re really looking forward to it and I hope this is the first of many times. Either we can come over here or we can have some of the New Zealand Defence Force come over and train with us.” Many platoon members had served in Iraq and their next scheduled
deployment was to be in Afghanistan late next year. The platoon will participate in Anzac Day commemorations in Diamond Harbour before sailing from Lyttelton the next day along with South Island-based NZDF soldiers to join 35 US marines and more NZDF soldiers for Alam Halfa. Major Harris said it would be nice to take part in the commemorations. “Both of our nations had a lot of soldiers in the First World War and a lot of them unfortunately lost their lives but it’s good to be able to share things like this. It’s just another way we can share the friendship between our two countries.” NZDF Major Brent Quin said the joint exercise would be valuable for New Zealand and US forces as both could find out how they worked together in a training environment, rather than in a genuine combat situation. “It’s a good chance to test our inter-operability because we haven’t done that for ® a while.”
