BURNHAM Military Camp has been shaken by the deaths of three more of its soldiers in Afganistan’s Bamyan province on Sunday. The latest tragedy means Burnham has now lost five personnel in the troubled region in two weeks. The bodies of fallen soldiers Corporal Luke Tamatea, Lance Corporal Jacinda Baker and Private Richard Harris will be returned to Christchurch today with a ramp ceremony at Christchurch Airport. A military service for Lance Corporal Pralli Durrer and Lance Corporal Rory Malone, who lost their lives on August 4, was held at the Burnham camp on August 11. In the wake of the latest tragedies, the New Zealand Defence Force released statements on behalf of the families of the
three soldiers. LCpl Baker’s family described her as a fearless girl, full of spirit, who would be remembered as an amazing daughter, partner, sister, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, cousin, niece, friend and soldier. “Jacinda was loyal and our rock. She was the one to turn to if you needed someone calm, with practical help to get you through whatever it was you were going through,” the statement read. “She was proud to be a medic in the New Zealand Army, proud of the work she carried out, and we in turn were and are so incredibly proud of her.” LCpl Tamatea’s family said there were no words that could describe how saddened they were by his passing. “Luke took his job in the Army extremely
seriously and was very proud of his service. When he went to Banda Aceh in response to the tsunami, he really wanted to be on the first flight in as this meant he could make the most difference in people’s lives.” His “four beautiful daughters” would remain his greatest legacy. LCpl Harris’ family said he had been their “pride and joy”, a man who “loved his whanau dearly and loved life”. “Rich was a laid-back, quiet, fun loving, mischievous guy who would light up the room with his smile.” Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Rhys Jones said the families had his deepest sympathies. “Ours is a dangerous profession, and while we accept these risks, the death of colleagues and friends is always difficult to take.”

First milk products off the line in Darfield THE first bags of whole milk powder have rolled off the production line at Fonterra’s new $200 million manufacturing site near Darfield and are bound for South East Asia, China and the Middle East. Fonterra director operations – NZ milk products Brent Taylor said it was smooth running for the new milk powder plant, which produced 40 metric tonnes of product in its first full day of operations. “It has taken less than two years to bring the project together and it is a significant achievement for the co-op and good news for Canterbury and the wider Christchurch rebuild,” he said. “More than 1500 people have been involved in construction of the first drier and all their
hard work has paid off. “With a current annual growth rate of around five to six percent, Canterbury is New Zealand’s fastest-growing region for dairy, and with our combined investment of $500 million across stage one and two at Darfield, we see a strong future in Central Canterbury.” Fonterra Darfield is the co-op’s first new site in 14 years and has been fitted with the latest technology. At peak capacity, Darfield drier 1 will convert about 2.2 million litres of milk per day into 370 metric tonnes of whole milk powder. Stage two of the site’s development includes extension of the dry store as well as the commissioning of a second 30 MT-per-hour milk drier, which will triple the site’s capacity.

SELWYN District firefighters have once again excelled in a national competition. Six months after the Rolleston Fire Brigade won the National Road Crash Rescue Challenge, several of the same men, as well as other firefighters from around the district, have shown they’re also pretty good behind the wheel of a fire truck. The United Fire Brigades Association National Drivers Challenge was held in Feilding recently, attracting a record number of 72 entrants from around the country. Little River’s Todd Pike took out second place, while Rolleston’s Glenn Manning was eighth. Others to do well were Southbridge’s Jamie Philpott (15th place) and Darfield’s Daryl McCaughan (21), as well as Rolleston firefighters Marty Tier (24), Stephen Trigg (27) and Shannon Austin (37).
Drivers competed in a series of events testing them on attributes including reaction time and ability to avoid obstacles. Mr Manning said driving ability was an important part of the job. “For us to be firefighters we have got to have access to all the hoses and water and everything else that goes with it and that’s all mounted on those four wheels and the big red truck, which has got to get there safely.” He was happy with his placing. “It was a bit of a surprise. I had a couple of average sort of runs, which I would have hoped to do a little better in but I think everyone walked away pleased. “Overall it was a nice, well-run event with some really good learning going on,” Mr Manning said. “We got to hone our skills out on the track.”

Plan draws line on Former PM speaks use of water on environment Tom Doudney
NEW water permits are unlikely to be granted in much of the Selwyn District, while water transfers will also be affected as a result of Environment Canterbury’s (ECan) recently notified proposed Land and Water Regional Plan. ECan commissioners David Caygill and Peter Skelton recently fronted a media conference on the plan, where the Selwyn Waihora Zone was singled out several times as an area where over-allocation of water and water quality were of particular concern. Mr Caygill said under the proposed plan it was “unlikely that a resource consent (water permit) will be granted in areas where water quantity limits are currently at or above” recommended limits. New rules also meant water permit holders in zones where water was considered to be over-allocated would not be able to transfer the entire amount of unused water allocated to them. Instead, a portion of that allocation would have to be surrendered for the benefit of the environment. Mr Caygill said it was likely that the value of the proportion not surrendered would increase. However, Tony Davoren, managing director of water permit trading company HydroTrader, said he had “grave doubts” that the increase in value would occur. The changes were likely to put people off transferring water permits, which would in turn stifle development. Mr Skelton said it was hoped that the

regional plan would stop water quality in the Selwyn Waihora area getting any worse until the sub-regional plan being developed by the local zone committee came into effect. The sub-regional plan was expected to be notified early next year. Mr Caygill said while farming practices in the region would have to change, it was not necessarily the case that farming could not intensify further as new land management practices might affect what was sustainable in the area. The plan would also help those thinking of implementing water storage schemes indirectly, as having clear rules on water issues would provide some certainty.
FORMER Prime Minister Helen Clark presented a State of the Nation’s Environment public address to an audience of 350 at Lincoln University on Monday night. Staff, students, public figures and members of the community turned out to hear from Miss Clark in her capacity as administrator of the United Nations Development Programme. The theme of the address was ‘What does the outcome of Rio+20 mean for sustainable development?’. Miss Clark covered not only the outcomes from the controversial Rio+20 but also the issues developed and developing countries are facing in today’s economic environment, and what this means for sustainable development on a global scale. “Our country is more heavily reliant on the earth’s bounty than are most developed countries. Our land- and sea-based industries thrive when the climate is benign, and when ecosystems are healthy,” she said. New Zealand’s expertise in the science and technology of agriculture could be employed to make the shift to more sustainable production methods at home, as well as to help developing countries increase the productivity of small farmers. Her talk, and the many questions from the audience, explored such issues as the role of women in developing countries, whether China should be used as a role model for other nations to lift citizens out of poverty, and whether GDP is a good measure of how well a nation is lifting its sustainable development outcomes.
More Izone land open for business ROLLESTON’S Izone industrial park has continued to grow, with the opening of its 50hectare Stage 6 development on Friday. The newly released land, when fully developed, will have a value of approximately $60 million. A number of businesses have already committed to establishing in Stage 6, taking up to 10 hectares, with a further two hectares under negotiation. At 180 hectares in total, Izone is New Zealand’s largest industrial development. It is owned by Selwyn District Council and managed by Hughes Developments Limited. Izone director Robin Hughes said the launch of stage 6 was a major milestone for the park, Selwyn District and Canterbury. “We have heard so much since the earthquakes about businesses and investors hanging back, and the recovery of the Canterbury economy being slower than expected,” Mr Hughes said. “Well here’s real evidence that there is confidence in our region’s future; that businesses are willing to invest when the place and the product is right.” Selwyn District Deputy Mayor Sarah

What a winter I seriously cannot remember a winter like this one, with rain, mud and overcast weather making everything and everybody totally miserable. The water table is now at ground level and surely the soil can’t take any more rain. Calves and lambs must be wondering what sort of world their mothers have dropped them into. People throughout Canterbury have become grumpy as they wake to another dull day with the promise of another extended period of rain. Colds and flu seem to be the only things that thrive in such conditions. I managed to get all the anti-cold and anti-flu pills and injections, but I still went down with a head cold and a tummy bug that had a party at my expense for nearly a week. Many companies are playing some sort of musical chairs every morning as employees ring in from their sick beds. On the farms in Canterbury, farmers are very careful to protect paddocks from heavy hooves. Obviously cattle, deer and horses can churn a paddock up in days and totally ruin pasture. Sheep aren’t quite as bad, but the problem is where to move them to. Sacrificing paddocks is hard to do unless there are plans to resow them in the spring. However, there is some consolation in the fact we aren’t on our own. Farmers in Britain still haven’t been able

to harvest their cereal crops and face spraying fungicides onto the crops twice a week to stop them being ruined. In another twist of nature, the drought in America continues with and their crops are Rob Cope-Williams failing because of a lack of water. The really good thing about our winter is that spring will follow. Just imagine what is going to happen when the sun does come out and the temperatures do rise and all that natural water is there for the plants to drink and use to grow. Growth has already started on many farms, with pasture and crops enjoying the lack of frosts and cold soil temperatures. As soon as machinery can be used on paddocks, as in when the paddocks are dry enough to support machinery and not have them sink up to the axles, the spring crops will go into the ground ready for a boomer season. The animals will welcome the warmth and energy from the sun as warmly as we will, and all in the world will be great and there’ll be no need for irrigation for ages, making it even greater.

Exhibition puts spotlight on community art

Ropes, knots, cooking and plenty of fun Justine Marshall THE Lincoln Scout Group has been enjoying a busy schedule of late with many fun events on the calendar. The theme being followed this term for the entire group (Keas, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers) is the celebration of 105 years of scouting worldwide. All sections have been brushing up their basic skills required both indoors and outdoors. Just this week the Keas found themselves meeting for a 7am breakfast at the den, while the Cubs have also been cooking up a storm with a taco evening. Scouts joined in this theme and are planning some international cooking for their next camp in early September. Other skills that have been on the agenda have included some fun with ropes and knot tying and lessons on the safe use of knives, axes and saws. The children have also managed some time out of our local den. The Keas had a fantastic time last term with a visit to the Lincoln University entomology department for some bug research, and most recently, the entire group got together for a fundraising evening at Clip’n’Climb. This event was a real hit, but also managed to
raise funds for those Scouts we have going to Oz Jam (Australian Jamboree) in the New Year. The Lincoln Scout Group has been growing in recent times, with numbers now up to 93. We have had great support from the local community for which we are extremely grateful. Come celebrate Albert Anderson Day on Sunday ALBERT Anderson Day was originally set up in 1986 by former Southbridge publican Ron Smart and the Southbridge Rugby Football Club (SRFC) as a way of raising funds to benefit the local community. At the time, they chose to recognise local icon Albert Anderson as a talented All Black, who had also played over 100 games for Canterbury, hence the Albert Anderson Trophy for the player of the year was created. Albie is still a local resident, farmer and great supporter of the club and the community. After 26 years, this annual event is still alive and well and last year raised more than $18,000 for the Southbridge Town Hall upgrade. Each year non-profit organisations apply to host the day to raise money for a selected project. This year’s host is the Ellesmere Motor Racing Club. The day’s proceeds will assist with building
a concrete wall to surround the race track, embankment and replacing the safety fence. As tradition dictates, the Canterbury classics, which consists of up and coming, current and ex-Canterbury and All Blacks players, are invited to play the Southbridge invitation senior team, which includes the player of the year nominees. SRFC will host all the games on the day at the rugby park on St James Street on Sunday, August 26. The day commences with the junior rugby prize-giving at 11am in the clubrooms. Games will include Southbridge Golden Oldies v Divison Three at 1pm and Canterbury Classic v Southbridge Seniors at 2.15pm. At the ground there will be raffles and a bouncy castle for the children; as always the shop will be complete with sausage sizzles (supplied by BNZ of Leeston), refreshments, fruit and vegetables stalls. These symbols are available from the Symbols dialog box – Insert tab, Symbol, More Symbols. You then need to scroll through the gallery of symbols to find the one that you need to use. This can get a little tedious, particularly for symbols that you use frequently. Keyboard shortcuts are the quickest way to do most things, and if you find yourself repeatedly inserting the same symbol into documents it is Submitted by the Ellesmere Motor Racing a good idea to create a keyboard shortcut for the symbol. On the ribbon, click the Insert tab. Club. Click Symbol and then click More Symbols. Find and select the symbol to be inserted. Click Shortcut Key – the Customise Keyboard dialog box appears. IT was a weekend of reunions, reminiscing and rekindling old netball friendships as more than 140 past and present Rolleston Netball Club members gathered for the club’s 50th jubilee celebrations. As you can imagine, turning half a century was great cause for celebrations and the party was a great excuse for Aucklander Claire Wood, right, and fellow teammate Kathryn Macfarlane to join in the party. Claire played for the club in the 70s and 80s when the uniforms consisted of homemade white tops and bright orange skirts. As well as a stint as president, her husband Bruce (who also attended the weekend’s events and was a police officer in Rolleston during that time) fulfilled the role of treasurer for a while. A delight for her was seeing that the club had grown from the nine teams when she was playing to the 31 teams that participate in senior, social, primary and future fern competitions today. When she first joined the club there was one practice court in Rolleston and she, along with other members, fundraised by holding a fashion parade, among other things, to raise the money for a shed to store netball paraphernalia. On Friday, Claire was finding it somewhat difficult to locate some of her former teammates. “I think it’s because I’m expecting them to look like they did 30 years ago,” she said.

Jubilee celebrations with top netball ROLLESTON Netball Club started off its jubilee weekend with a great exhibition of both junior and senior netball at the Rolleston Events Centre on Friday night. The games were part of the Selwyn Netball Centre competition and provided a terrific spectacle for the 200 people who turned out to watch. In the curtain raiser, top-of-the-table primary teams Rolleston A and Halswell A took to the court in what was a brilliant display of netball, exhibiting skills well beyond their years. Both teams impressed spectators in what turned out to be a goal-for-goal dash, with Halswell just managing to keep ahead throughout the four quarters and finishing with a one-point advantage over its hosts 19-18. In the premier competition game, which saw Rolleston A hosting Broadfield A, the result was a surprise, with the final score further apart than anyone thought imaginable. The teams were placed second and third before the game so a tight match was to be expected. However, Rolleston failed to fire, especially in the shooting circle, and a determined Broadfield side was quick to capitalise, finishing triumphant 65-48. Ironically, Broadfield and Rolleston will now meet again this week in the semi-final round of the competition. Lincoln and Greenpark A will play in the other semi-final match. With only two games to go, the four semifinalists have now been decided for each grade in the Selwyn Netball Centre competition. Quarter scores (Halswell first): 15-14, 31-27, 47-37, 65-48.

The thought of fresh, new season’s jersey bennes, gently boiled with lashings of mint and real butter make me excited. Traditionally, most backyards had a ‘spud patch’ but if you are in between homes or renting, try growing potatoes in containers. Use anything from a kitchen bucket with holes in it, or try car tyres - stack two or three on top of each other. Old recycling bins and drums work, too. Even though the weather is still cold, now is the time to be thinking about getting organised for growing potatoes this season. The key ingredients to a tasty crop are sun, well dug soil, potato fertiliser and water. There are numerous different varieties of potatoes, choose a variety which lends itself to the type of cooking you prefer: Christmas Day - cliff kidney, jersey benne, maris anchor, swift Roasting - moonlight, agria, rua New potatoes - boiling - Nadine, jersey benne, cliffs kidney Mashing - moonlight, agria, Ilam hardy Growing in buckets or planter bags – cliff kidney, rocket For a list of potato varieties available in
stores, and more detailed information visit www.tuitime.co.nz. Begin by sprouting or ‘chitting’ seed potatoes. Choose certified seed potatoes - these have been specifically grown to produce a reliable crop in the home garden and are free from pests and diseases that can harm and affect potato taste and harvest. Don’t be tempted to cheat and plant any of those rogue leftover potatoes that may have sprouted in the pantry. It’s very unlikely these will produce a decent crop. To sprout, lay the seed potatoes flat on a tray or box somewhere dry. Small green shoots will appear; once they are about finger length they are ready to plant out. The process can take two to four weeks. The soil needs to be loose to allow the roots to penetrate and the potatoes to develop. Dig garden beds to a depth of 20 to 30cm, next blend in Tui Potato Food and Compost or Tui Super Sheep Pellets. The more time you spend preparing your soil prior to planting increases the likelihood of a tasty outcome. Make a trench in the soil about 10cm deep, plant the sprouted seed potatoes in the middle of the trench, with the shoots facing upwards about 30 to 50cm apart. In pots or tyres, plant three to five seed potatoes per container. As shoots appear above the ground, mound up the soil to cover the new shoots. This encourages the plant to work harder to produce a larger crop under the soil. Continue doing this until the plants are
