Part of the landscape: Selwyn community service award winner Jack Pearcy and his business, Jack’s Service Centre, have been part of the Doyleston community since he arrived 40 years ago.

Years of community service honoured Tom Doudney

WHEN Jack Pearcy moved from Waiau to Doyleston in 1972 to take over the local garage, store and post shop, the locals thought he wouldn’t last a year. Now, 40 years later not only is the business still going strong but Mr Pearcy has just been honoured with the community service award at the Sensational Selwyn Awards – and he says he owes it all to the support he has received from his family and local residents. Mr Pearcy, a former Ellesmere and Selwyn District councillor for 25 years until he resigned in 2010, gives more than 30 hours a week to the various community and nonprofit organisations he volunteers for, including the local St John ambulance service and Doyleston Community Committee. However, while he was proud of the work he had done, he was hesitant to take too much of the credit.

“Everything is people orientated to a greater or lesser degree of what we’ve been involved in,” he said. “Take notice, it is ‘we’ more than ‘I’ because without the support of the family, the people that worked for me and the people that brought their work to us, we just couldn’t have done it. So you have got to look at the big picture and say it is only the support of the community that allows busy people to do things that other people haven’t got the time, or haven’t got the mana to have that effect.” Such was the value he had placed on trust and honesty that for more than 30 years Mr Pearcy kept one of his petrol pumps unlocked overnight so that people could help themselves to petrol if they needed and pay him back afterwards. When at one time that trust was broken, a few straight words from Mr Pearcy to the

guilty party soon sorted it out. Mr Pearcy rated his work with others ensuring the Ellesmere Community Hospital stayed open, that the school bus service between Leeston and Doyleston was retained and assisting with instillation of the RAPID number system as highlights amongst the many community initiatives he had been involved with. St John southern area committee relationship manager Brian O’Connell said Mr Pearcy was one of Ellesmere’s most dedicated St John members and was exceptionally committed to his community. “We’d like to acknowledge Jack’s work for St John and to congratulate him on this most recent acknowledgement of his community service. Ellesmere is very lucky to have someone as special as Jack working for their interests.”
