New DoC safety system criticised Tom Doudney
THE Arthur’s Pass search and rescue team is deeply concerned with a national Department of Conservation (DoC) initiative to remove a visitor intentions system designed to aide the safety of trampers; a move they believe will negatively impact search and rescue operations. In line with national policy, the paperbased visitor intentions system run by the Department of Conservation’s (DoC) Arthur’s Pass Visitors Centre was recently removed. The system involved visitors filling out a card with their plans for the day and expected return time at the visitors’ centre. These cards were monitored by DoC staff and used by Search and Rescue teams. The system has been replaced with a single computer terminal from which visitors can access an online tool called Adventure Smart to let friends and family know of their intentions and return times. Arthur’s Pass Rescue acting chairperson Hamish Reid said the introduction of the
Adventure Smart system was a positive move, however it was likely that the removal of the paper-based system would lead to “a dramatic reduction in the number of people leaving intentions before entering Arthur’s Pass National Park, and a reduction in the quality of information provided by those who do leave intentions”. “The new system does not provide the same wealth of information to us during searches that the existing system does. For example we will not be able to access the intentions information of other people in the area, which we currently rely on for tracking witnesses. “Our experience has been that trampers consistently leave poorer intentions information by phone, e-mail and with friends and family, than they leave over the local DOC counter.” Trampers regularly changed their plans to take into account the up-to-date local information they had received from visitor
centre staff who then provided information critical to search planning. “We don’t think it is a big ask for the Department of Conservation to retain the existing system. It is a modest cost to them, especially relative to the significant volunteer hours put in by our tiny community.” DoC Waimakariri area manager Kingsley Timpson said the issue was “bigger than Arthur’s Pass” and was a national policy decision and one which would be an improvement on visitor safety in the back country throughout New Zealand. “A nationally consistent model has been developed with the Department of Conservation and police. This is to improve visitor intentions and in particular for people to take responsibility for their own safety in the back country.” A petition in support of retaining the paper based system, circulated by former Arthur’s Pass search and rescue team member Graeme Kates had received 555 signatures.

Children choose in charity art event AROUND $10,000 to benefit child cancer sufferers was raised by children choosing their favourite artworks at a gallery fundraiser near Tai Tapu on Sunday. The annual Art of Courage event, held by the Longueville Gallery, saw around 100 children each choose one of more than 100 paintings donated by artists from around the country to take home with them. Families bought tickets for their children for $100 each, with all proceeds going to the Child Cancer Foundation. Only children were allowed inside the gallery on the day so that adults did not influence their decision. Organiser and gallery co-owner Sharon Ovenden said she was very pleased with how this year’s event
had turned out. “The idea of children choosing their preferred piece using instinct only and with no concept of the investment value of certain artists, appealed to me,” she said. Ms Ovenden said she had originally chosen the Child Cancer Foundation as the recipient charity for the event because the idea of children helping children held a very real value and appeal to her. After working closely with the Child Cancer Foundation for the past few years she has seen first hand the vital role they played in supporting and assisting children with cancer and their families. “The sheer courage and spirit

that these kids show in what is most often a prolonged period of upheaval and suffering and in some cases isolation from family and friends, deserves to be recognised”, she said. “It has also been exciting to witness the keen interest and art appreciation awareness this event has fostered in the children participating.” One of the children, Noah Grossman, 5, was so happy his choice of painting he had decided to write a thank you letter to the artist. “I chose it because I love the colours and think it is very beautiful,” he wrote. “Mummy and Daddy say that they genuinely love it and it will take pride of place in our home”.

Last leg: Burnham based social worker Sally Blackler, right, and workmate Corporal Natasha Donaldson arrived in Burnham on Tuesday after spending the last month walking from Auckland to Christchurch to raise funds for CanTeen. The pair, along with their fundraising team Sisters in Arms, were retracing the footsteps of Ms Blackler’s late husband Sergeant Nathan Blackler who was a physical training instructor for the New Zealand Army. Mr Blackler completed the same journey eight years ago, starting in Auckland and finishing at Burnham Military Camp, raising $65,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation along the way. Mr Blackler, who was in remission from cancer at the time of his walk, decided to complete the fundraising mission as a way of giving back to some of those who had helped him through his journey with cancer. However his cancer returned and he passed away on March 23, 2007.

On show: Sheep drafting on a Lake Coleridge farm tour.
Large increase in visitors to Lake Coleridge TOURISM operators in Lake Coleridge, one of Canterbury’s less well-known tourism destinations, stepped up this summer to cater for hundreds of extra visitors who were not able to visit some of Canterbury’s former tourist highlights. An increase in coach tours was the standout theme of the summer, members of the Lake Coleridge Tourism Group heard at their AGM last week. Tourism Group chairperson Lyn Nell said that although the Lake Coleridge basin had been catering for group tours for a long time, it had not previously been on the scale seen this summer.
Over the past six months, the High Country Tour business Ms Nell runs in conjunction with two other properties saw an influx of groups looking for new places to visit in Canterbury. “We’ve been operating 20 years and it would have been one of our busiest,” Ms Nell said. “Other operators in the area have had similar experiences.” Alex Bruce from Travlon Coachlines, based in Lincoln, said other tour operators like them are taking advantage of the area’s spectacular scenery. “It’s only one hour from Christchurch and there are enough established tourism
businesses that haven’t been affected by the earthquakes,” he said. Terrace Downs Golf Resort general manager Dilan De Silva said the resort, the area’s largest tourism business, had seen a big increase in international tour companies visiting recently. “We’re fortunate we’re in an interesting high country environment that offers a range of recreational opportunities, but it’s still within easy driving distance from Christchurch.”

Discover Sensational Selwyn Expo popular

THE Discover Sensational Selwyn Housing and Lifestyle Expo, held in Rolleston last weekend, attracted around 1000 people over two days, with a significant number from Christchurch city. The expo at the Rolleston Community Centre featured 62 stands, including developers, house builders, banks, local businesses and tourism attractions. It was organised by the Selwyn District Council to promote the quality housing and lifestyle benefits of living in the district. Mayor Kelvin Coe said people seemed pleasantly surprised by what was on offer in the district. “We talked to stand holders over the weekend and they were very positive about our expo visitors, who were very interested in the value
for money they would get in terms of buying properties and building in the district. The Selwyn District Council stand had been busy throughout the two days, he said. “The Housing and Lifestyle Expo was the first time Selwyn District Council has done anything like this and it’s been a great opportunity to raise our profile with city dwellers looking for new options. We think we’re definitely going to get some new residents as a result,” Mayor Coe said. The council will be analysing feedback forms from exhibitors before deciding whether they would look at repeating the expo event. Children didn’t miss out, with many taking the opportunity to pat a couple of llamas from Watford Grange Llamas, jump around in the bouncy castle or get their faces painted.

Many people use Microsoft Office to complete their everyday work. Often, they encounter problems that cost them time and cause unnecessary stress. If you’re largely self-taught, or the training that you have had is now a distant memory, the tips and tricks in this column will help you complete your everyday Microsoft Office documents faster and with fewer problems.
Some Microsoft Outlook questions I’ve had a couple of Microsoft Outlook questions in the last few days. The first relates to forcing recipients to reply to all and the second is about protecting recipients’ privacy when sending messages to a group of people. Can I make sure that replies to particular email messages are sent to all recipients rather than just one or two? In the message window, click the Options tab, click Direct Replies To and then in the Have replies sent to box, type or select the email addresses of the people who need to receive the replies. When the recipient clicks Reply or Reply to All, all of the email addresses will appear in the To: box. Of course, this doesn’t prevent the recipient manually deleting addresses from the To: box, but it’s a start!
I want to forward a message to a group of people but I don’t want to share the recipients’ email addresses. How can I do this? Enter your own email address in the To: line and then enter everyone else’s in the BCC line (BCC means “blind copy circulated”). If you don’t see the BCC: box, click the Options tab and then click BCC. Each recipient receives only sees two addresses: yours and theirs. It’s also a good idea to delete the original sender’s email address from the body of the message reply before you click Send. Lincoln teenagers help keep tradition alive Tom Doudney FIVE Lincoln High School students played their part in keeping tradition alive on Anzac Day, performing a guard of honour at the Lincoln Cenotaph. Sam Thomson, Henry Clark, George King, Eric Nicol and Caleb Christey-Gale, all between the ages of 13 and 14, were trained by army Vietnam veteran and retired air force group captain Bill Barnes of Lincoln. Mr Barnes said the idea had come about as part of a general drive, initiated by Lincoln Anzac Day coordinator Vern Clark, to get more community involvement in the town’s ceremony. “We used to do this sort of thing at school; we used to stand guard on the memorial every Anzac Day so we thought we’d try and see if we could get them together to do the same.” He had been impressed with how well the boys performed their duty and was pleased with the Lincoln commemorations in general. “It was really quite moving to see everyone get stuck in and get involved. It was something quite different I think, especially having the boys and staff from the school get involved.” Mr Barnes trained the boys over eight weeks using sawn-off golf clubs donated by Lincoln Golf Club at first because they didn’t have ceremonial swords to practise with. Eventually, they were able to obtain three New Zealand army swords from private owners and two US Marine Corp swords from a Christchurch business. George, 14, said learning to perform the guard of honour had been difficult to begin with but he had really enjoyed it.

On tour: Synlait Milk chief executive Dr John Penno shows the Chinese party around the Dunsandel factory.
Synlait Milk hosts top Chinese leader networks such as Xinhua and CCTV is invaluable to building our brand and reinforcing New Zealand’s world-class reputation for food safety and quality to the lucrative Chinese market.” Mr Jia and his entourage of more than 40 people met with Synlait Milk executives before viewing the southern hemisphere’s largest infant nutritional plant, which was opened in late 2011 at a cost of $100 million. The party also visited a farm supplying Synlait Milk and spoke with the family about the production of milk supplied to the processing company. China has become New Zealand’s second largest trading partner and export market. It is New Zealand’s biggest export market for dairy products and is one of the most important markets for Synlait Milk. “The infant formula market in China is worth an estimated US$10 billion,” Dr Penno said. “Our fundamental business driver over the next five years is to continue to develop our nutritionals business and capitalize on the opportunities this market presents.”
FOURTH-ranked Chinese leader Jia Qinglin visited Selwyn-based dairy nutritional business Synlait Milk, which is 51 percent owned by Chinese company Bright Dairy, during his recent New Zealand tour. Mr Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the People’s Political Consultative Conference, was in the country to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomacy between China and New Zealand. The Synlait stop was his only appointment with a New Zealand company during the tour. The visit proceeded after a minor incident, when the Chinese party’s path was blocked by the car of a Synlait staff member who had neglected to heed a memo to keep a carpark clear. Members of Mr Jia’s entourage physically lifted and dragged the car out of the way. Synlait’s chief executive officer Dr John Penno said the visit was an honour and the company welcomed the opportunity to showcase their business to Mr Jia and the Chinese media, who were also on hand. “The prospect of positive exposure to consumers though the big Chinese media
DUCK hunting season begins this Saturday and if Fish and Game predictions are anything to go by, hunters should have plenty to fire at. Based on aerial trend counts by North Canterbury Fish and Game, it seems likely there will be plenty of ducks around this season. While surveys of the Waimakariri to Rakaia area showed numbers were down slightly on the last few years, in general, the duck population has been increasing since 2007. The aerial trend counts showed a slight increase in the number of ducks in the Waimakariri to Amberley region. Lake Ellesmere was not surveyed as part

of the annual trend count due to reccurring problems with the accuracy of counting the lake’s population; however, anecdotal evidence suggests there are plenty of ducks on the lake. There are also good opportunities this year for shooting stubble crops. The wet summer has meant a late harvest for many crops, leaving plenty of stubble around for ducks to feed on. The maize crops were a month late in many areas and are only now coming off the paddocks. Many barley paddocks are yet to be harvested. This creates opportunities for hunters to shoot traditional stands, such as ponds or riverbeds, in the morning and then shoot stubble paddocks in the evening. Greenpark hunter and farmer Terry Lassen has reported observing large numbers of paradise shelduck this season. Many of these birds have been seen flying overhead in the early afternoon, heading from Lake Ellesmere to feed on paddocks further inland. To minimise the chances of hunters accidentally shooting the wrong species in low light, the hunting hours have now been amended. Previously, hunters could start shooting at 6.30am; this has now been extended to 6.45am.
Gold medal goes to Tauranga-based scholar
Damien Young
LINCOLN University has awarded its gold medal for the Diploma in Horticultural Management to a student studying in the Bay of Plenty. Damian Young completed his study over five years while working full-time in the kiwifruit industry in Tauranga. The university delivers its diploma programmes in several centres across New Zealand. In the Bay of Plenty, students study through Fruition Horticulture. Spokesperson Wendy Bradley said Fruition Horticulture was
proud to have one of its students receive the medal and it was a testament to Mr Young’s hard work. Although the option to take the course part-time and away from the university had been offered for 13 years, this was the first time that a regionally-based student had won the gold medal. Mr Young said he was pleased to receive the medal and said the programme had allowed him to get the best qualifications on offer without having to leave Tauranga.

Springston’s Secret Garden THE Springston Community Garden has been named the ‘Springston Secret Garden’ by the children at Springston School. The garden has been set up by the Springston Enviro Community group on land loaned by Helen Mather. Terry Windle, Colin Giddens and Geoff Prattely have put in a lot of time and effort clearing the section and setting up the beds. The children have adopted some of the beds, and during the summer have had three sessions a week of approximately one hour per session where they learn and get involved with the garden, whether it is cooking something from the garden, planting, weeding, planning a herb garden or designing a sign. Without the help of the community and parents, the children will not be able to continue having this amazing place to learn from. They would really like some grownups to help! If you could contribute even an hour once a month, then if a number of others do the same, a roster can be made so each person doesn’t have to do too much and the children can keep their garden. You don’t have to be an expert; you could even learn gardening skills along with the children as there are people in the community with gardening knowledge who can act as mentors. The children would really like a chook

house so they could have fresh eggs to cook with their vegetables. They are hoping to sell excess vegetables and perhaps eggs to raise money. There are also beds available for adoption by the community. Please let us know if you are interested. Please phone Sandy on 3255878 or email Springston.schpta@farmside.co.nz. The garden and the children need your help. The Springston Enviro Community group are just working on the garden at the moment but if you are interested in other sections of the Sustainability Action Plan or attending meetings, please contact Sue on 329 5858.

SATURDAY 24TH NOVEMBER – TWILIGHT MEETING
CARAvAN DERBY The caravan derby will be back for the 14th October meeting. So start searching for that old car and caravan or trailer to build your float and start thinking of a theme. This event was a huge success last year for both spectators and competitors, whom most will be completing again this year, so we should have a track full of laughter and carnage.
WANT TO GET RID OF THAT OLD CARAVAN IN THE YARD? GIVE US A CALL
Our new addition, the “Have a go Car” is ready to hit the racing track at Ellesmere Motor Racing club. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a racing car driver for a race? Well here is your chance to have a spin around the track yourself for a real racing experience, alongside other drivers in the Hobbie saloon class? If you think watching racing from the safety of your own car is fun, then you should try it from the cockpit, at least once in your lifetime. For the cost of $60.00 you too can “have a go” in a car all ready with no work involved, and all the gear provided, just pre-book and turn up, it’s that simple. You will need to drive under a CTRA License, which will be issued on the day and attend the drivers briefing with all other competitors. Bookings in advance are essential so to reserve your seat in the cockpit phone Bridget on (03) 324 2287 Or email bridget.roxburgh@hotmail.com A big thank-you to Rusty Liddell Builder, who donated the car, Henson Motorsport crew and Brad Gordon and Ron Koole who have built and worked tirelessly to get it up to specification.

SHOWCASE | INDEPENDENT DOORS
Independent doors – a top team Canterbury owned and operated Independent Doors is probably the supplier of the doors in your home, or work place.
Independent Doors owner Kim Lewis.
The company has been established for over 16 years and also has branches in Timaru and Cromwell. Independent Doors is the preferred supplier of doors for Placemakers, Mitre 10, ITM, Carters and Bunnings. They also supply doors to a number of top house building companies – and to the general public. ”We are proud to be associated with all our merchant companies,” says owner Kim Lewis. “We have built and grown our business by giving all our customers the quality, flexibility and dependability they expect.” The range includes cavity sliders, bifolds, wardrobe doors, the very popular wardrobe organisers and top quality hardware to suit every taste. All the doors are made from hollow core, timber or solid MDF. They can be standard sizes or customised, are available loose or pre-hung and with a choice of different veneers and hardware options.
“We pride ourselves on our top quality and superior doors that are truly value for money. As we say, quality doesn’t cost, it pays.” With years of experience and expertise, even the most complex specifications can be catered to and no job is too big or too small for the great team at Independent Doors. “Whether it is one door or 30 doors, you’ll receive the same quality product, attention to detail and on-time performance that have made us a favourite of building contractors, architects and merchants over the years.” Independent Doors is environmental friendly and uses as much green material as possible and also recycle their waste. Although their building in Dakota Crescent sustained damage after the earthquakes it was quickly repaired and Kim engaged a consultant to advise her on the best way to store product and locate machinery to maximise the safety of the team. Kim says she is very proud that no one lost their jobs. Independent Doors and their showroom

Be a Gorgeous Food regular D
iscover the tasty, freshly-baked treats available at Gorgeous Food on Springs Road in Wigram and you’ll make the friendly bakery a regular stop in your day. Inside the bakery you’ll see the cabinets packed with delicious-looking food, from hot pies and quiches to freshly cut sandwiches, bagels, muffins and a huge selection of delectable slices. Husband and wife team Peter Ormandy and Joanne Fryer run Gorgeous Food, creating everything fresh on-site. A baker by profession, Joanne has perfected her range of recipes over the past 10 years or so, with the muffins and slices being especially popular with regular customers. “Our own hot pies and sausage rolls are also snapped up quickly, especially in winter,” she says. Fellow baker Tanya Henderson assists Joanne, while Peter and Tammi take on the barista role, creating Vivace coffees, and Sarah makes the sandwiches. Gorgeous Food has a growing catering business, supplying morning teas, lunches and cocktail food for any occasion and to suit any budget. The food is handmade from the freshest ingredients and served garnished attractively on platters or in a disposable box. Gluten-free and vegetarian items are also available.
Joanne says Gorgeous Foods has been particularly busy since the earthquakes, as there seems to be many more people in the Wigram and Hornby area, leading to an increase in the number of staff. Regular customers are always popping in for a chat and many are known by name, making it doubly enjoyable to purchase food there.
Gorgeous Food also bakes birthday cakes and other celebration cakes to order. Jo and Pete thoroughly enjoy running their business and providing top quality food for their many customers. They look forward to welcoming new customers and are confident that once people have tasted their food they will be back again and again for the variety and the delicious flavours. Stop in at Gorgeous Food, Shop 5, 68 Springs Road, Wigram or phone 344 6043 or 344 6044 to place an order.

Double victories delight If you are building in the Leeston bowlers Selwyn District then you
Tom Doudney
WHETHER it’s singles, doubles or triples, the Leeston Bowls Club can say it’s number one. The club is celebrating two recent successes after bringing home two women’s national titles from the Bowls New Zealand tournaments held recently in Invercargill. First, Sandra Keith and Valmai Hantz triumphed in the National Clubs Pairs tournament, played across April 16 and 17. Only two days later, Keith again tasted victory, this time with partners Karolyn Boon and Serena Matthews when they won the National Clubs Triples tournament. For Keith, it was her third taste of success in only four months, as she won the Bowls New Zealand national singles title in January. Ms Hantz, who had won two Canterbury titles before but had no previous success at the national level, was thrilled with the doubles win.

“It’s hard to believe, really,” she said. Ms Boon said the result was fantastic. “Valmai and Sandra sort of set it up for us. When they won the pairs we got a bit of roll on. We’ve had a good season as a club.”

All you need to know on growing great families and parenting teenagers It might have been a while since he was one himself, but respected author, speaker parenting expert, Ian Grant, certainly knows a lot about teenagers. Together with his wife Mary, they have spent nearly their whole adult life working with teens and their families. Now you have the chance to learn more from the expert! Ian is presenting two seminars in May on “Growing Great Families” and “Hot Tips on Parenting Teenagers”. Ian will give his best insights on how to make your family grow into something wonderful. Having done bricklaying as a hobby for many years, Ian uses an analogy: “You build a family the way you build a house: with good foundations of love and values, strong walls of boundaries and discipline to keep good things in and bad things out, and a roof of parental ‘mana’ to keep the whole thing together.” Topics covered in his presentation will include: • How to be the parent your child needs • Getting cooperation from your kids • Boundary setting and alternative strategies for firm but fair discipline • Making your child confident and resilient so they develop good self esteem • Practical ideas to help your child handle the pressures of our modern-day culture. Ian’s book, The White Water Rafting Years - a Common sense Guide to Parenting Teenagers has been a best seller on both sides of the Tasman.
WhAt Ian Grant from Parents Inc. presents Hot Tips on “Growing Great Families” and “Parenting Teenagers” When Wednesday 23rd May (Growing great families) & Thursday 24th May (parenting teenagers) Venue Ellesmere College Hall, Dunsandel Road, Leeston CosT $6 single / $10 double
“The tricky bit about raising teenagers is that they keep on changing. Their body, moods, shape, and their expectations – they’re all changing. Your nice little boy… he’s gone! And now there’s this gangly stranger in his place”, says Grant. “In the middle of all this change going on, parents have to offer a degree of consistency for their teenager. We need to be the anchor that they can swing around. This means being consistent in your values and even-handed in your discipline. It means that they should know how you will respond when they cross a boundary. It means you must rise above your own moods. It’s tough, but you’ll get the hang of it!”

His “Hot Tips on Parenting Teenagers” seminar will range from how to talk with your teenager, right through to dealing with full-on teenage rebellion and aggression. “There are lots of things that could annoy you about your teenager”, coaches Ian, “but I know parenting teens can be the most rewarding, most exciting and most fun years of your life. I guarantee you’ll go home from this seminar with new ideas, a heap of tips to try, and a big dose of optimism.”
