Selwyn CEO takes key rebuild role

OUTGOING Selwyn District Council chief executive Paul Davey will leave his position three months ahead of schedule to take on a new management role with the Christchurch Central Development Unit (CCDU) next month. Mr Davey had previously signalled he would quit at the end of June when his contract expired. At the end of February he will start as the CCDU’s new general manager of development services which will see him overseeing the development of infrastructure in the rebuilt central business district as well as, to a lesser extent, policy and planning decisions. The position had previously only been filled on an interim basis. “The reason I’m leaving earlier is obviously there is a great need for additional resource in there and I’ve been fortunate to, I think, bring a skill base which has enabled me to add some value to the organisation with my linkages in the past, my experience in local government - and they were anxious to fill the position
quickly.” He was looking forward to the challenge of his new role with the Government’s Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera). “We do have a fixed timeline in terms of Cera’s life cycle and so that will fuel frenetic activity, I’m sure, over the next couple of years.” Mr Davey said his early departure would not be disruptive to the Selwyn District Council. “I’m buoyed by the fact that I’ve got a very sound and experienced management team and the acting chief executive [Environmental Services manager John Christensen] in the interim is a very able and experienced manager in local government and I have the greatest confidence in him as does the council.” He looked back on his 12 years as chief executive with “a degree of satisfaction”. “To be able to lead and be at the helm of an organisation which has just seen stellar growth, particularly over the last seven or eight years, has just been a quite awesome experience.”

A century of croquet CHRISTCHURCH is celebrating 100 years of croquet with the sport’s New Zealand Centennial Championships taking place in the city this week. Croquet is one of the very few sports where men and women compete on equal terms. The event has attracted top competitors from Australia, the United Kingdom, United States and Canada. A total of 36 teams competed for the open doubles championship over the weekend. Mark Avery and Michael Wright won the Championship final, beating Chris Clarke and Ian Burridge, while in the Plate final Josh Smith and David Wise beat Harts Tahurangi and David Wickham. The open singles championships are well underway, starting on Tuesday with 76 players in 10 blocks, competing for a place in the knock-out competition of the best 32 competitors. The semi-finals and final will be held this weekend. The tournament is being held at five Christchurch clubs – United (Hagley Park), Barrington, Cashmere, Fendalton and St Martins. The first croquet New Zealand open was held in Hagley Park in 1913. One of the tournament organisers, Owen Evans, said it was an exciting event. “We see some very talented players. There are four New Zealanders in the top 10 in the world and they are all here this week.” The mentally challenging sport is still the

It’s all about you WE’VE had another fantastic summer weekend despite the constant reminders that surround us and Saturday’s biggest shake in six months. There is plenty happening in our city from the Buskers festival to the NZ Centenary Croquet Championships being held over this week. As we head towards schools reopening and the tertiary students returning to the city, now is the time to recharge those batteries. We need to be mindful of the pitfalls of the hot, dry conditions, the real danger of fire and the care needed around the aquatic environment. It seems extraordinary and just plain wrong that there are sectors in our society who find

I WOULD like to thank the man who came to our aid and helped me pull my youngest son out of the storm drain he fell down on the corner of Beresford Street and Oram Avenue last Monday night. The irony was that my two boys were trying to do some good for the community by removing the wooden pallet from the road, which we mistook as being left there by vandals who had recently been trashing the area. Unfortunately this pallet was covering the storm drain, there were no signs indicating any danger.

All of this points to neglect, which could have led to a child losing his life. Sadly this is something we are becoming accustomed to in the east. There are few police in the area, the roads are atrocious and people are still living in severely compromised houses with little or no indication on the horizon that anything will be fixed in the near future. As insurance companies cynically sit on their hands, I’m sure the powers that be will do as they have been doing over the past two years and ignore this as usual.

Chung’s charity rewarded Dedicated: Daniel Chung has been giving free meals to the homeless of Christchurch at Latimer Square every Sunday for the past five years and his effort has been awarded with a Queen’s Service Medal in the 2013 New Years Honours. Mr Chung spends $100 to $300 of his own money every week to feed between 70 and 80 people, who are mostly homeless or poor but also the odd financially stable person who wants free food. He said his parents were pastors and they inspired him to help the homeless. While he did not expect to be doing it five years later, he said he will carry on for as long as he could as he felt it was his duty to help. “I have to carry on,” he said. Photo: Jessica Schaap

Wilkinson out of cabinet WAIMAKARIRI Member of Parliament Kate Wilkinson has been dropped from Cabinet following a Government reshuffle. Ms Wilkinson was Minister of Conservation and Food Safety, as well as Associate Minister of Immigration. SEVERAL property owners were frustrated by the difficulty of gaining access to their properties during the recent Selwyn Road fire near Broadfield. The fire on January 10 burned through 150 acres, destroying homes, livestock and other property. Property owners expressed their concerns at a public information meeting held by Selwyn District Council in Lincoln last week. The meeting attracted about 100 people. One property owner, Tracey Rhodes, said she had experienced great difficulty getting to her property to reach a tenant who worked night shift and could potentially have been asleep and unaware of the fire. “I had to basically yell until a police man took me up and then [when we got there] we found that she had just got up. We got some horses out of the burnt paddock and if we hadn’t they’d be gone.” When she tried to return a second time to get another horse out of harm’s way and to bring in water tankers from her cousins’ waste removal business she again had difficulty getting past the cordon. “There needs to be some communication with [cordon operators] to tell us that there is (a) a command centre and (b) if you’re a land owner, you run the risk. I know what the coroner is going to say if I died but I’m not stupid.”

A man spoke in agreement with Ms Rhodes and when a show of hands was taken, about 40 people indicated they shared the concerns. Council corporate services manager Douglas Marshall said he understood the desire of property owners to get back in to their properties but authorities had to make tough decisions when people’s safety was at stake. “It’s a tricky balance between letting people in and out,” he said. Another issue raised by several people at the meeting was the fire danger posed by properties where the grass was allowed to grow long. Council principal fire officer Wilson Brown said property owners could be advised to cut their grass but would not necessarily do so. In many cases the grass was deliberately grown long for agricultural purposes such as providing feed for animals.
Plant flammability measured THE flammability of New Zealand’s native and exotic plants is being studied in a project to help inform future rural fire safety measures. The current spate of bushfires across the Tasman and the destructive grass fires in Canterbury this summer have highlighted the risks posed by uncontrollable fires in rural and semi-rural environments. These dangers are all the more important as the phenomenon is essentially an annual occurrence. Studies from National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) scientists conclude that every year in New Zealand an average of 3000 wildfires burn a total of 7000 hectares of rural land, with the prospect of worse to come through the effects of global warming. While factors such as recent rainfall, prevailing winds and topography played a notable part in the severity of these fires, the flammability of plants - essentially the fuel for the fires - was a major contributor. While there has been little research on the flammability of New Zealand plant species, Lincoln University lecturer in ecology Tim Curran is working toward bridging this knowledge gap through a series of projects funded by the university. Although the research is still in its early stages, Dr Curran is using a specially designed

‘plant barbecue’ to measure the flammability of shoots for a range of native and exotic plant species. Thus far, the research has focused primarily on commonly used plant material such as gorse, macrocarpa or pine to assess flammability relative to its volume or moisture content. “It’s important research,” Dr Curran said. “Future flammability studies of native and exotic species will provide valuable information for fire managers, land managers and the rural community in general. The hope is to use this research to help control fires through, among other things, such techniques as the planting of low flammability plants as a kind of fire break.”

TALENTED young Cantabrian athletes are bringing home 25 medals from five days of Olympic-style competition in Sydney. They were part of the team of 156 elite junior athletes who represented New Zealand in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, which includes 1700 athletes from 30 countries, from January 16-20. In total the New Zealand team won 69 medals comprising 11 gold, 25 silver and 33 bronze. Chef de Mission Chris Arthur said the team members displayed maturity beyond their years during the competition. “Our elite junior athletes have taken everything in their strides this week, including Sydney’s hottest day on record, and have performed with Super Saturday: New Zealand’s athletics team scooped 24 medals, 3 gold, 9 silver and 12 bronze, at all the mana of the Olympians they are aspiring the Australia Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney. he students from St Andrew’s College year six class will end up eating their inquiry project this year. “We were looking at sustainability and how we could introduce that into our lives,” says year six teacher Kate Brown. “The class decided we should have a garden where we could grow our own vegetables.” The inquiry started with masses of research which even involved the students using themselves to map the size of the garden they wanted by lying on the ground, growing their own seeds and developing computer

skills to blog the whole process. “They looked at design and what plants would grow quickly in this environment,” says teacher Vicki Pettit. “We’ve called the inquiry, Let’s Get Edible, and it’s amazing to see the children so engaged with it. Every day there is something to do on the garden whether it’s weeding, watering or updating the blog.” It’s still early in the season but already heads of lettuce, tomatoes, Savoy cabbage, carrots, broad beans, onion and garlic are already growing lushly in the well-tended
soils. It’s promising to be a bumper crop and Kate says the students are already making plans for what to do with it. “They are all collecting recipes that are being put up on the blog and we’ll have a big lunch with the parents once we’ve harvested everything. Surplus will get sold in the school café and we’ll also donate some of the produce to the City Mission.” The year five class is helping with its contribution – compost from their worm farm.

THE friendship, fun and fitness on offer at the Broomfield Wanderers walking group has kept people in the area involved for the past 14 years. The group celebrated the anniversary with a barbeque on January 13. Neta Wederell, 70, still co-ordinated the group she founded to fill a need in her community, following her sadness at the murder of a local young mother, Lisa Hurrell, by her estranged partner in 1998. “We used to have a lot of crime in our community and we had had a murder in Broomfield. I have always been a Christian and I was really thinking hard what can I do for this community to lift the spirits and it had to be simple, not a big cost.” The group meets at 9.30 every Wednesday morning at the Salvation Army’s Hornby Community Ministries centre in Manurere

Kite Day expert offers advice JessicaSchaap
PEOPLE are advised to get the best kite they can for Kite Day to be held at New Brighton beach on January 27, kite lover Jim Nicholls says. The event was the biggest kite event in the South Island and if the weather was good he expected there to be several hundred people flying kites, including kite flyers from the Netherlands, Germany, UK and the North Island. Mr Nicholls said kite flying was very weather dependent and required a smooth steady wind.
The event was organised by Julie Adam, who has an online kite business, in conjunction with the Christchurch City Council and is part of the Garden City SummerTimes events. To have a good time at the event, Mr Nicholls advised people to buy a good kite. “Don’t go to the two dollar shop and expect to buy something and expect it to fly well, because it most certainly won’t,” he said. He has seen kites thrown away at kite events because people were “disgruntled” with them. He recommends people spend at least $30 or $40 on a kite that is made well.

THE landscape of the Cashmere Hills has provided inspiration for resident of more than 40 years, children’s book illustrator and author Gavin Bishop. Mr Bishop has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2013 New Year’s Honours for services to children’s literature. Born in Invercargill, he studied in Christchurch and taught art at Linwood High School and Christ’s College for 30 years, before moving on to write and illustrate children’s books full time. His first picture book, Mrs McGinty and the Bizarre Plant was published in 1981 and he has had more than 40 titles published since. His latest book, Mr Whistler, was a collaboration with celebrated children’s author, the late Margaret Mahy. Mr Bishop said it was a surprise to receive the recognition for his work. “The growth has been enormous in the last 20 years because when I first started there were very few picture books published in New Zealand, one or two a year, but now it’s really a major industry,” he said. Finding good ideas for new books was a challenge. “It doesn’t matter how wonderful the book might look when it’s finished, if the idea is a bit thin the book will remain that too. “Good ideas are extremely rare and I find that difficult to come up with something that’s interesting and fresh. It may be an old idea and I have to come up with a new angle.” For inspiration, he thinks back to his own childhood, remembering the things he enjoyed. He also tries to stay in touch with what today’s children like. “I do a lot of school visits through the year. Listening to the questions that children ask, I get a lot of mail too, sometimes written, sometimes emails, from children telling me what they enjoyed. There’s two-way traffic between me and the audience, which I value tremendously.” His grandchildren Zoe, aged seven, and George, aged four, provide a constant source of ideas. “They are very enthusiastic coming up with suggestions for stories I might write in future. A particular character in one of my books is called Bruiser, the digger who makes motorways, and they’ve always got ideas for things Bruiser might take part in or might do. Some of them are quite useful!” he said. His family has lived in the same home on Cashmere Hill for the past 42 years and it has had a huge effect on his work - local readers will often recognise elements of the area in his

drawings. “An old book of mine called The Three Little Pigs, that is very obviously set at the foot of the Cashmere Hills, with the hills in the background, around about this time of the year over a hot summer.” The Cashmere area seems a haven for talented writers and artists, with residents over the years including crime writer Dame Ngaio Marsh, poet Ursula Bethell and historian Gordon Ogilvie. Mr Bishop’s books have also featured city landmarks that have since been demolished, such as the gasworks on Moorhouse Avenue and Edmonds Baking Powder factory in Ferry Road. “Not because of the earthquakes, but because of what they call progress,” he said. He said receiving a New Year’s Honour would give New Zealand children’s literature a stamp of approval in people’s eyes and make them think about it more seriously. “I’m very pleased to be able to join the ranks of people like Margaret Mahy and Lynley Dodd and Joy Cowley, who have had similar if not higher honours than this.”

Council photo competition BUDDING photographers have just over a week left to have their images considered for the cover of the Christchurch City Council’s new Long Term Plan for 2013 to 2022. Entries to the council’s photographic competition close next Friday, February 1. The council is encouraging photographers to submit images that show the city’s people and places in all seasons. It might be capturing our city in a snow storm, a yacht race on Akaroa Harbour or the delight of an audience as it watches a World Buskers Festival performer. The image on the cover of the Long Term Plan is intended to depict the sort of place residents want to live in now and how they would like to see it in the future. The Long Term Plan sets out the activities and services the council intends to provide,

and how these are to be funded. A draft will be available for community consultation in March, before sign-off of the final Long Term Plan in late June. There are two categories in the photo competition, the first being people - families, cultural and social events, and the second being places – green space, buildings, suburbs and the central city. Photographers must submit a digital image of a person or a place in Christchurch and the Banks Peninsula area, which must have been taken after January 1, 2012. Photographers should consider images from all four seasons and may enter up to five images each. Entries close at 5pm on Friday, February 1. Sydney calling for young director New experience: Christchurch director Elsie EdgertonTill is looking forward to heading to Sydney to train in the prestigious director programme at the world-renowned National Institute of Dramatic Arts. The 27-year-old is a longstanding actor and director with The Court Theatre and one of the Court Jesters. The daughter of well-known television chef Richard Till, her directing work includes The Court and Canterbury Repertory Society’s successful Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 2011. “While experience is important, throughout the stages of the application process they wanted to know about my passion, focus and inspiration. I am so excited to have the opportunity to explore my capabilities further,” she said. Admission to NIDA is extremely selective on average, only one out of every 100 applicants is accepted and its alumni include Baz Luhrmann, Cate Blanchett, Mel Gibson and Hugo Weaving. As a New Zealander she is ineligible for student loans in Australia so hosted fundraising events last weekend. She hoped to return to New Zealand at the end of the intensive one-year course and would especially love to return to direct in Christchurch. “Here is home for me. A CHARITY golf day jointly organised by Ngai Tahu Property and Harcourts Grenadier has raised more than $18,000 for a youth organisation dedicated to tackling youth crime in Christchurch. Thirty-two teams of four attended the ambrose event and an evening meal, followed by a charity auction, held at the Russley Golf Course in November last year. Tane Norton and Billy Bush ensured the crowd was further entertained. Manager licensee of Harcourts Grenadier City Office Cedric King said the fundraiser was a great success. “Investing in the young people of our city is investing in our future. The programmes run by CYDP are incredibly exciting and it is great to see young people turning their lives around and getting back on track. Harcourts Grenadier City Office is proud to be supporting such a worthwhile contributor to Christchurch,” he said. Canterbury Youth Development Programme (CYDP) board chairman Greg Hart expressed gratitude for the support, time, enthusiasm and commitment the organisers showed. “It is with their support that we can continue to make a huge difference in the lives of young people and their families in this city,” Mr Hart said. Harcourts Grenadier City Office first ran the charity golf day for CYDP in 2010 but postponed the event in 2011 due to earthquake damage. Harcourts has now confirmed sponsorship of this annual event, with planning already under way for 2013. The CYDP was set up in 2008 to combat increasing levels of youth crime in Christchurch. It was the brainchild of a group of businesspeople in association with the New Zealand Defence Force, the Police and several community agencies. Its leaders say since its inception, the CYDP

DIRT STARS HEAD TO RUAPUNA
This weekend the Mag and Turbo Ruapuna Speedway hosts its biggest meeting of the season with the Giannis Breads New Zealand Midget Car Championship at stake. A total of thirty three cars, including nineteen from the North Island will contest the prestigious event that is being held for the 71st time, many of them will be familiar to viewers of ‘The Dirt’ TV show. Heading the lineup is four time and defending National Champion Michael Pickens who is rated by many as being one of the best Midget car racers in the world following his many successes in New Zealand, Australia and the USA. Pickens has recently announced that next season he will concentrate on racing Sprintcars, and that this could be the last time that he races a Midget car in the South Island. Perennial ‘bridesmaid’ Brad Mosen from Auckland has also confirmed his entry at the wheel of the CRC V8 Synergy engined car. This engine is a hand made New Zealand built creation that utilises two four cylinder motor cycle engines. The powerplant

proved to be so fast in the USA two seasons ago that American officials have banned it from their competition. American Ricky Logan is also among the entrants. Logan has raced in Christchurch on previous occasions in a Sprintcar, but has in recent time done double duty with the Midget. Several years ago he qualified in the top 24 at the famous Chili Bowl indoor race that always attracts in excess of 220 cars, so fans can expect a good showing from the American pro. It is forty five years since a South Island driver last won the New Zealand Championship, and given the form shown by the local boys so far this season confidence is high. Nelsons Nevil Basalaj has stood on the podium twice during his illustrious career and knows the Ruapuna track better than most, while the spectacular Dave Kerr from Southbridge, the current and five time South Island Champion, has plenty of experience racing up at Western Springs and knows what to expect when the northern boys invade ‘his’ territory. Another highly rated local is Nick Donaldson who has stepped back onto the dirt track after concentrating on sealed circuit last summer. Donaldson has

quickly adapted to the hustle and bustle of Midget car racing in the Total Oil car and is seen by many as being a dark horse among the contenders. Friday nights racing features nine qualifying races for the Midgets, while Saturday night sees several other races before the 25 lap final. Also on the programme is the ‘world famous’ TQ Masters race, which is the only major event in TQ racing around the world that utilises a three wide starting formation. Close on fifty entries have been received including four Americans, three Australians and a host of North Islanders. The gates open both nights at 5 PM, and the dirt starts flying at 7. Mag and Turbo Ruapuna Speedway is located at Ruapuna Park, Hasketts Road, Templeton. The park is signposted from the Main South Road at Templeton, and the Main West Road at Yaldhurst.

HER latest song is titled Young but it was the senior generation bopping along to the electropop beats of Kiwi singer and songwriter Ruby Frost last week. The performance was the prize in a preChristmas Wish List competition run by Vodafone, won by Lipena Afereti who worked at St Winifreds Hospital in Bryndwr. Ms Afereti and facility manager Kathy Toumazou decided the concert should be held at the elderly care facility. “I love the place, it’s a pleasure to work here and it’s a pleasure to have her to perform,” Ms Afereti said. Ms Frost, whose real name is Jane de Jong, said it was an honour to perform for the residents. Their average age was 70, so she was a little apprehensive about singing Young; however, she explained it was about being young at heart. “It’s a really amazing feeling when you feel like you’re starting to connect with people no matter what the audience is, it was special,” she said. “I actually met a cheeky old Dutchman who reminded me so much of my granddad.” The residents hadn’t heard of Ruby Frost before they knew she was coming, so they looked her up on Google and YouTube. “She was surprisingly good, I enjoyed her singing and I must comment I thought the percussionist was very good,” resident Neil Johnson said. Fellow resident Nigel Knapp said it was the best music he had heard performed at St Winifreds for a long time. “Usually it’s playing piano or something, it’s really boring. I like rock music and it’s great.” Ruby Frost is having a busy summer, performing a series of concerts in people’s homes and numerous festival gigs as part of

THE Court Theatre is looking forward to a promising 2013, having been settled in to its new home in Addington for just over a year. The extended summer season of musical performance Grease sold out in two weeks, making it the theatre’s biggest ever sales of any show, with 28,000 tickets. Court Theatre artistic director Ross Gumbley said he was excited about the variety the theatre was offering at its new premises, known affectionately as The Shed, with children’s show The Three Little Pigs, which winds up on Saturday proving popular as well. “It’s a really delightful show. The audiences are going insane; we are turning them into an unruly mob!” Mr Gumbley joked. This year promises to bring some thought-provoking productions, like August: Osage County, a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning American drama by Tracy Letts, which runs from February 16 until March 9.

Mr Gumbley spoke of the play’s “deliciousness” and said it was one of the greatest American plays written in the past 30 years. “It looks at an extended family which is brought together through a mystery. The father has gone missing and the whole family is brought together to support the mother. All the skeletons that have been buried in the closets are forced into the light of day.” Actor John Bach, who plays Beverly Weston, the family’s patriarch, said as well as the drama, the play was also darkly funny. Mr Gumbley said the play was a voyeuristic experience for the audience. With a cast of 13 and an expansive set, the new larger stage at The Shed enabled them to fit it all in. “It’s a play we would have loved to have done but couldn’t in the Arts Centre [due to lack of space],” he said.

Lynn Taylor I approach my art practice with a printmaker’s sensibility working across print, digital, textile, paint and written mediums. I am interested in mastering specifics within discipline traditions and then work at pushing the boundaries of this learning to create objects and surfaces that evoke or invite viewers to touch. (This is why I had to indulge in a little bookmaking for this exhibition!) My body of work for ‘Taylormade’ is disparate as I return to making artwork after recovering from breast cancer. This has been a struggle due to memory loss and damaged fine coordination skills. I had to begin sewing with a pair of pliers and a huge needle and have found myself responding obsessively to regain skills by, for example, sewing on many buttons. Appropriately the underlying current in my previous art works was concerned with the mapping of memory and erasure. I feel my working process now performs this concept and while these works are fragmented each piece is layered with history, stories part told and one or two even sneak in my favourite theme of the sea.

Photo: Samantha Early From an early age I would entertain myself by being creative and making things. This was a great and satisfying way of expressing myself. Over the years, I enjoyed a variety of crafts and activities but doubted my ability to paint. One camping holiday in 2004 soon changed that as I discovered my new love in life, painting. I am a self-taught artist. I like working in acrylics due to their great versatility, the strong colours achieved by applying layer upon layer and it’s quick drying time. It also allows me to experiment with other mixed medias such as tissue, compounds, gel, ink, pastels and sand for added interest. Born in Timaru and currently living in Manawatu, I feel a drawing back to the hill country and tussock covered plains of the Canterbury region which shows in some of my work. Paintings evolve from my love of New Zealand with its stunning and diverse landscape.

Winning at all costs comes with a price OVER the past week we have witnessed the dismantling of the all-American superhero. The demise of the legend that was Lance Armstrong has been compulsive viewing right around the globe. Armstrong was seen by many as ‘bigger than Texas’. He was invincible and a cycling freak, the likes of which the world had never seen before and probably wouldn’t see again. No matter how many attempts were made to discredit his achievements by world cycling bodies, drug enforcement agencies and fellow competitors, Armstrong was able to keep the ‘Teflon’ image where nothing that was thrown his way would stick. He was seen by millions as the greatest cyclist to have ever competed on the world stage. Huge credit should go then to those people and organisations that tirelessly worked at bringing Armstrong to justice. For a long, long time it appeared that Armstrong was always a step ahead and too cunning to be prosecuted. It’s probably fair to say that a large number of his fans didn’t want the myth to be shattered. Let’s face it; he was the cycling genius that
only comes along once in a lifetime. Finally his pursuers got the chance to nail him and boy they have not let up once they saw the chance. He has been completely exposed, as not only a cheat but a man obsessed with keeping the legend status alive and well. Watching it all unfold in front of us on television you get the feeling that Armstrong is only putting on a show for self-preservation and there is very little remorse shown by the ‘king of the Tour de France’. There is an old saying that the moment you tell a lie you have to keep telling them to a point where the villain believes every word he says. Armstrong has raped and pillaged the sport he dominated and now the entire sport is tainted with the belief that everyone involved in the sport of cycling must be on drugs because that’s the only way they can enjoy success. Every achievement by any cyclist is now brought into disrepute by the corruption and blatant drug usage employed by Armstrong. Born to be a hero, Armstrong will die as the most destructive sports person on the planet, but at least he has finally been caught.

Queen’s Service Medal for pet lover JENNIFER Prattley has always had a love for animals and when she was young she would get into trouble with her family for taking in stray cats and dogs. “I’ve always been fond of them but I never thought I’d be lucky enough to get a job with them,” she said. Her long-time passion has paid off as she has been awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for her work for the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Before becoming involved with the organisation, when her children were grown up, she worked in a bank and in clerical jobs. She was a member of the Canterbury branch of the RNZSPCA for many years and was a committee member in 1980 and
in 1989. She took up the role as manager at the Animal Centre in Hornby in 1989 and stayed in that position until her retirement in 2003. In 1992 she was elected to the board of the RNZSPCA and remains in that position. Other involvement has included serving as national vice president of the national board of the RNZSPCA from 2003 until 2011 and six years on both the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee and on the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee. Mrs Prattley has taken in a few animals from the SPCA including a labrador with puppies that was abandoned by its previous owner but “unfortunately you can’t save every animal that comes in,” she said. Mrs Prattley took in the labrador cross
after the death of her other labrador and said the dog fitted into her home nicely. “I think my cats just thought it was the same dog,” she said. She said while working for the SPCA she had “a lot of joyful times” seeing animals reunited with their owners or found new homes. There were the downsides, however, and although most people were good with their animals she had seen many cases of starvation. “It’s such a basic need that humans need and surely they must realise,” she said. “It’s just the minority but unfortunately the SPCA work with the minority cases.” When learning about the medal she was “completely surprised”, and had not even considered the possibility, she said.

Council photo competition BUDDING photographers have just over a week left to have their images considered for the cover of the Christchurch City Council’s new Long Term Plan for 2013 to 2022. Entries to the council’s photographic competition close next Friday, February 1. The council is encouraging photographers to submit images that show the city’s people and places in all seasons. It might be capturing our city in a snow storm, a yacht race on Akaroa Harbour or the delight of an audience as it watches a World Buskers Festival performer. The image on the cover of the Long Term Plan is intended to depict the sort of place residents want to live in now and how they would like to see it in the future. Container shops approved for South Brighton
Former television presenter to take court action

SOUTH Brighton business owner Sam Yang received resource consent approval last week to move into a temporary container shop on Bridge Street, South New Brighton. His business was one of the many that was yellowstickered on Estuary Road during November last year. A temporary building will be set up in front of the Hosanna Baptist Church. Mr Yang expects to move in there sometime in March and the shop will be open six days a week from 7am to 7pm. The bakery has moved its business elsewhere

OLLY Ohlson, former children’s television presenter, is taking his insurer Southern Response to court over his Brooklands home. He hopes to use this as a test case to put pressure on insurers. Mr Ohlson said he was representing people in different red zones around Canterbury who were in similar situations as his. Mr Ohlson is in a red zone but his insurer has only offered the repair cost of his house. “We consider ourselves to be a test case so what we want is for people to be treated fairly by their insurer. I’m talking about people who have paid their premiums faithfully. “We are using this as a warning to insurance companies to treat their clients with respect.” Mr Ohlson said the amount he had been offered for the repair of his home was not sufficient as he had rimu floorboards and a rimu curved stairway, Italian imported marble and Oregon beams slotted into the wall. He said the cost of replacing these was more than he had been offered. Mr Ohlson has set up a PledgeMe account to raise the funds to take Southern Response to court. He does not think there will be enough to win his case but he is not bothered about that. “A big part of it is publicity…to let people know there is someone doing it,” he said. So far he has raised just over $4000 and he is a bit nervous about reaching the full $30,500 by early March. Mr Ohlson said he was humiliated by the thought of asking for money but he put the humiliation aside because he felt strongly

He is also interested in lobbying the government to set up an arbitration process where insurers are regulated and their policies are to be written clearly so there is no way an insurer can get out of its obligation by reinterpreting its policy. “If there’s any ambiguity it should be found in favour of the claimant.” He said the government should have been prepared for an earthquake and the insurers were stupid to not expect an earthquake and “leave it up to the market” as we are known as the “shaky isles”. “The government has let us down badly by not having structures in place to help the claimants of a tragedy like this. “This is a case of law. Kite Day expert offers advice Jessica Schaap
PEOPLE are advised to get the best kite they can for Kite Day to be held at New Brighton beach on January 27, kite lover Jim Nicholls says. The event was the biggest kite event in the South Island and if the weather was good he expected there to be several hundred people flying kites, including kite flyers from the Netherlands, Germany, UK and the North Island. Mr Nicholls said kite flying was very weather dependent and required a smooth steady wind.
The event was organised by Julie Adam, who has an online kite business, in conjunction with the Christchurch City Council and is part of the Garden City SummerTimes events. To have a good time at the event, Mr Nicholls advised people to buy a good kite. “Don’t go to the two dollar shop and expect to buy something and expect it to fly well, because it most certainly won’t,” he said. He has seen kites thrown away at kite events because people were “disgruntled” with them. He recommends people spend at least $30 or $40 on a kite that is made well.

Resident concerned about New Brighton roads NEW Brighton resident Terry Moyse, 76, is annoyed at the state of the roads in the New Brighton and Bexley area. He said Pages Road between the Brighton Bridge and Anzac Drive and the alternative route, New Brighton Road from the Brighton Bridge to the Wainoni Bridge, were in a “terribly neglected” state. Mr Moyse said the roads were inconvenient for road users as there were a lot of cars and people in the area. Pages Rd is the main route to New Brighton and Southshore and the only other route via New Brighton Rd is just as bad, he said. He described the potholes as “enough to lose a mini in”. “No one seems to worry about the eastern suburbs…it’s just through the areas where the houses are red zoned. “Even before the earthquake it was terribly neglected by the council…all we want out here, we just want a fair go,” he said. Upgrading of these roads is not currently listed on the SCIRT website.

Community centre coming down DEMOLITION of the South Brighton Community Centre began on Monday and is expected to be completed early next month. Christchurch City Council last month approved the demolition of the community centre at 74 Beatty Street, which has been closed since the February 22, 2011 earthquake. The hall sustained damage from the September 2010 earthquake, but the February 2011 quake caused significant further structural and superficial damage. An engineering report confirmed theextensive earthquake damage. The council has also received a Notice of Demolition from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority
(Cera) because parts of the centre are considered dangerous. However, as the notice was only for a partial demolition of the building, council approval to demolish the entire building was sought. General manager community services Michael Aitken said while the community had missed the facility since its closure, it was unfortunately too damaged to retain. South Brighton Community Centre is one of 30 priority projects which, in September 2012, the council approved for funding, further investigations and, where possible, repairs. “Coming up with a long-term solution for the community centre is certainly important to the
council and this was recognised when it last year named the facility as one of its priority projects. It’s difficult for residents to see the building coming down but we’re pleased to be able to offer some clarity about the building’s future. We will continue to update residents as more information comes to hand.” Future options for the site are continuing to be explored. However, rebuilding on the same site may be complex and expensive as it is Technical Category Three (TC3) land. DIRT STARS HEAD TO RUAPUNA
This weekend the Mag and Turbo Ruapuna Speedway hosts its biggest meeting of the season with the Giannis Breads New Zealand Midget Car Championship at stake. A total of thirty three cars, including nineteen from the North Island will contest the prestigious event that is being held for the 71st time, many of them will be familiar to viewers of ‘The Dirt’ TV show. Heading the lineup is four time and defending National Champion Michael Pickens who is rated by many as being one of the best Midget car racers in the world following his many successes in New Zealand, Australia and the USA. Pickens has recently announced that next season he will concentrate on racing Sprintcars, and that this could be the last time that he races a Midget car in the South Island. Perennial ‘bridesmaid’ Brad Mosen from Auckland has also confirmed his entry at the wheel of the CRC V8 Synergy engined car. This engine is a hand made New Zealand built creation that utilises two four cylinder motor cycle engines. The powerplant
proved to be so fast in the USA two seasons ago that American officials have banned it from their competition. American Ricky Logan is also among the entrants. Logan has raced in Christchurch on previous occasions in a Sprintcar, but has in recent time done double duty with the Midget. Several years ago he qualified in the top 24 at the famous Chili Bowl indoor race that always attracts in excess of 220 cars, so fans can expect a good showing from the American pro. It is forty five years since a South Island driver last won the New Zealand Championship, and given the form shown by the local boys so far this season confidence is high. Nelsons Nevil Basalaj has stood on the podium twice during his illustrious career and knows the Ruapuna track better than most, while the spectacular Dave Kerr from Southbridge, the current and five time South Island Champion, has plenty of experience racing up at Western Springs and knows what to expect when the northern boys invade ‘his’ territory. Another highly rated local is Nick Donaldson who has stepped back onto the dirt track after concentrating on sealed circuit last summer. Donaldson has

Junior surfers compete Buskers attract the crowds at Waimairi Beach
THE SCIRT World Buskers Festival in Christchurch has attracted larger audiences than last year and shows are filling up fast, festival manager Leyton Tremain says. “Attendees are a lot more organised this year, securing seats early and turning up to shows well before they start to get a good seat and have a drink. Those who wait till the last minute will miss out.” Word was also spreading about the new acts, he said. “As the festival continues and word of mouth grows, crowds are picking up on the success of festival debutants such as the fabulous Le Gateau Chocolat.” Buskers Burlesque is also proving a crowd favourite with a full house last Thursday and Friday nights. Tried and tested crowd favourite acts like The Topp Twins are back and performed at the SCIRT Comedy Club to a large crowd. The show was well received, especially when the popular pair poked good-natured fun at Earthquake Recovery Minister, Gerry Brownlee, Mr Tremain said.
THE Junior Surf Life Saving competition was held last weekend at Waimairi Beach. Two hundred and fifty athletes, aged seven to 13 years old, competed from the eight Christchurch clubs, and from Waikanae (Gisborne) and St Clair (Dunedin).

New Year’s Honour for athletics and science Jessica Schaap
RODERICK Syme, who put his passion for the athletics decathlon aside to concentrate on his physics PhD, has been awarded an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2013 New Year’s Honours. Dr Syme reached second nationally in the decathlon, beaten only by Roy Williams in 1965, who then went on to be the 1966 decathlon champion. While undertaking research at the University of Canterbury he became involved with Athletics Canterbury and, with a young family at the time rather than competing in the sport, had leadership and officiating roles for several Commonwealth Games and was also a New Zealand delegate to the International Association of Athletics Federations Congresses. “I couldn’t afford to train as much as I needed to progress.”
Dr Syme’s passion for physics proved helpful during the 2004 Olympics in Athens when a hurdle fell into an adjacent lane and interfered with another competitor. He helped to come up with the rule change requiring the hurdle to be to a certain rigidity, which was adopted at the 2007 Congress in Osaka. His knowledge of physics was also helpful with wind readings for the decathlon. Dr Syme said he had not made any outstanding scientific discoveries, but during the final stage of his PhD he, along with David Lockwood, was the first to operate a laser in New Zealand. His scientific research involved the study of crystalline materials using lasers. “It’s been a great privilege to be recognised by the people you’ve worked with over the years,” he said. Roderick Syme remains involved at the University of Canterbury as an Honorary Research Associate.

THE four-laning of Johns Road will mean traffic will no longer be able to turn right into or out of McLeans Island Rd. The four-laning of Johns Rd from Harewood Road to Sawyers Arms Rd will take about a year to complete and the work will be carried out in two stages. Stage one of the project will involve completing work in the north-western lane of Johns Rd, working from Harewood Rd through to Sawyers Arms Rd. Stage two will be on the opposite side of the road in the south-eastern lane, beginning at Sawyers Arms Rd and working south towards Harewood Rd. The New Zealand Transport Agency’s acting Christchurch State Highway manager Colin
Mackay said as part of stage one of the fourlaning, vehicles wanting to turn right from McLeans Island Rd into Johns Rd will need to turn left at Logistics Drive and right into Sawyers Arms Rd, while vehicles wanting to turn right from Johns Rd into McLeans Island Rd will need to use Sawyers Arms Rd to turn left into Logistics Dr and then right into McLeans Island Rd. Stage one is expected to be completed by the end of May and for traffic turning right this will add about two kilometres to people’s journey. However, Mr Mackay assures that this will not cause a hassle for people. “It’s more than capable of handling the extra traffic,” he said.

A UNIVERSITY of Canterbury psychology professor is researching whether guided distractions in potentially dangerous high-risk environments during periods of low workload can be beneficial for work performance. This research could be helpful for power control operators, air traffic controllers, rail operators and in medical settings such as monitoring critical care patients. UC Associate Professor Deak Helton will be collaborating with lead investigator Associate Professor Mark Wiggins of Macquarie University in Sydney. They will be experimenting to see what minimally intrusive or easy to disengage from secondary task people can do during periods of low workload that will avoid them

PEOPLE are advised to get the best kite they can for Kite Day to be held at New Brighton beach on January 27, kite lover Jim Nicholls says. The event was the biggest kite event in the South Island and if the weather was good he expected there to be several hundred people flying kites, including kite flyers from the Netherlands, Germany, UK and the North Island. Mr Nicholls said kite flying was very weather dependent and required a smooth steady wind.
The event was organised by Julie Adam, who has an online kite business, in conjunction with the Christchurch City Council and is part of the Garden City SummerTimes events. To have a good time at the event, Mr Nicholls advised people to buy a good kite. “Don’t go to the two dollar shop and expect to buy something and expect it to fly well, because it most certainly won’t,” he said. He has seen kites thrown away at kite events because people were “disgruntled” with them. He recommends people spend at least $30 or $40 on a kite that is made well.

Kiwis try to avoid being teased NEW ZEALANDERS living in Australia strongly display their national loyalties when it comes to sport but some change their accents because they get sick of the anti-Kiwi jokes, a University of Canterbury researcher says. Rosemary Baird, who has completed a doctorate thesis on Kiwis living in Australia, said some New Zealanders became loyal Australians while many others adamantly remained New Zealand citizens. The majority realised gradually that although New Zealand still claimed their national loyalty, over time Australia had become home, she said. “Many Kiwis over there are proud when they choose to be, although many are happy to fly under the radar.’’ Baird carried out her research looking at 1960-1990 Kiwi migrants, under supervision by Professor Philippa Mein Smith and Associate Professor Lyndon Fraser. Professor Mein Smith said the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated in 2009 that 529,000 New Zealanders were recorded as living in Australia but the number was believed to be substantially higher.

Support for youth development A CHARITY golf day jointly organised by Ngai Tahu Property and Harcourts Grenadier has raised more than $18,000 for a youth organisation dedicated to tackling youth crime in Christchurch. Thirty-two teams of four attended the ambrose event and an evening meal, followed by a charity auction, held at the Russley Golf Course in November last year. Tane Norton and Billy Bush ensured the crowd was further entertained. Manager licensee of Harcourts Grenadier City Office Cedric King said the fundraiser was a great success. “Investing in the young people of our city is investing in our future. The programmes run by CYDP are incredibly exciting and it is great to see young people turning their lives around and getting back on track. Harcourts Grenadier City Office is proud to be supporting such a worthwhile contributor to Christchurch,” he said. Canterbury Youth Development Programme (CYDP) board chairman Greg Hart expressed gratitude for the support, time, enthusiasm and commitment the organisers showed. “It is with their support that we can continue to make a huge difference in the lives of young people and their families in this city,” Mr Hart said. Harcourts Grenadier City Office first ran the charity golf day for CYDP in 2010 but postponed the event in 2011 due to earthquake damage. This weekend the Mag and Turbo Ruapuna Speedway hosts its biggest meeting of the season with the Giannis Breads New Zealand Midget Car Championship at stake. A total of thirty three cars, including nineteen from the North Island will contest the prestigious event that is being held for the 71st time, many of them will be familiar to viewers of ‘The Dirt’ TV show. Heading the lineup is four time and defending National Champion Michael Pickens who is rated by many as being one of the best Midget car racers in the world following his many successes in New Zealand, Australia and the USA. Pickens has recently announced that next season he will concentrate on racing Sprintcars, and that this could be the last time that he races a Midget car in the South Island. Perennial ‘bridesmaid’ Brad Mosen from Auckland has also confirmed his entry at the wheel of the CRC V8 Synergy engined car. This engine is a hand made New Zealand built creation that utilises two four cylinder motor cycle engines. The powerplant
proved to be so fast in the USA two seasons ago that American officials have banned it from their competition. American Ricky Logan is also among the entrants. Logan has raced in Christchurch on previous occasions in a Sprintcar, but has in recent time done double duty with the Midget. Several years ago he qualified in the top 24 at the famous Chili Bowl indoor race that always attracts in excess of 220 cars, so fans can expect a good showing from the American pro. It is forty five years since a South Island driver last won the New Zealand Championship, and given the form shown by the local boys so far this season confidence is high. Nelsons Nevil Basalaj has stood on the podium twice during his illustrious career and knows the Ruapuna track better than most, while the spectacular Dave Kerr from Southbridge, the current and five time South Island Champion, has plenty of experience racing up at Western Springs and knows what to expect when the northern boys invade ‘his’ territory. Another highly rated local is Nick Donaldson who has stepped back onto the dirt track after concentrating on sealed circuit last summer. Donaldson has
reoffending rate amongst hard-core, career youth offenders. A new five-year plan called Re-Focus Programme - No Child Left Behind, to target young people aged 10 to 14, is due to be launched in early March with a goal of permanently breaking the cycle of crime and abuse in families where it was the norm generation after generation.
