She continues the legacy of Diana and Robbie Robinson who both passed away in 2010 and had organised the Christmas parties for more than 30 years.

Having a special interest in eyes, Steve sees many different and challenging surgical cases but the severity of Bensons condition was a first for Steve. Benson had always squinted and closed his eyes, as a result they wept a lot and were uncomfortable. Benson sometimes banged into things and had done so since he was a small puppy.

Benson was severely affected with massive amounts of mucin in his skin. This had resulted in a large wrinkly bulge of skin on the top of his head. Gravity acts on the skin and this “top knot” falls forward towards his eyes and causes his upper eyelids to droop down over his eye. More importantly, and more painfully, the eyelids also roll in (entropion) so that the skin and hair over his eyelids rub on the clear window of the eye (cornea) which has large numbers of nerve endings resulting in acute pain. Benson also has rolled in lower eyelids. These problems resulted in decreased vision and pain – which he shows by the squinting and weeping of both eyes.

Under a general anaesthetic, I shortened (tightened) his lower eyelids. I also removed a large ellipse of skin from above each eye. This had the effect of lifting and rolling his eyelid margin. The wounds were sutured with fine sutures invisible to the naked eye.

An Elizabethan collar was put on his head for 7 days to stop Benson rubbing his wounds. He was also discharged with anti inflammatory medication and topical antibiotic eye ointment.

Sketches raise $15,000 for Cathedral bells

Earthquake Awards next week THE Christchurch City Council will hold a presentation ceremony for recipients of the second and final Christchurch Earthquake Awards on Tuesday.

A total of 172 individuals, groups and organisations will receive awards at a special ceremony for their acts of kindness, service or heroism during the earthquakes.

The council first presented the earthquake awards in February 2012 and decided to run another round to ensure anyone deserving who missed out last time had the opportunity to be nominated.

Mayor Bob Parker said many people had gone above and beyond their call of duty during the earthquakes and he was pleased they could get the recognition they deserved.

A 92-YEAR OLD Cantabrian has raised thousands of dollars for the repair of the Christ Church Cathedral bells by selling her sketches of Christchurch historical buildings ,which she has put into a book and calendar.

Some of Joyce Newton’s sketches date back to the 1930s when she was attending art school.

She has sketched since then as a hobby and her drawings were sitting in her bottom drawer until the earthquake of 2010, when she was inspired to put her art work into books.

Originally the books were just for the family so the memories could be safely kept, but the idea of fundraising for the Christ Church Cathedral inspired more copies.

Her book was published more than a year ago and the buildings she included in the book and calendar included the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Christ Church Cathedral, the Arts Centre, the former Christchurch Girls’ High School and Municipal Chambers.

“I’d not met Joyce before today and so to know there is a woman who is 92 who has spent her life with a hobby that has now been turned to raise money for the Cathedral bells is just wonderful.”

Mrs Newton said it was a great record of Christchurch’s history.

“Quite a few people have bought them for their grandchildren to show them what they grew up with because they are going to grow up with a very different city,” she said.

The 13 bells had hung in the cathedral tower for nearly 33 years until the February 2011 earthquake when they were buried and damaged in the debris of the collapsed tower.

In July this year they were shipped from Lyttelton to the Taylors Bell Foundry in Leicestershire, England, for repairs.

The money raised to repair the bells was $30,000 and Joyce’s donation will increase that by $15,000.

No one wins THE Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission report into the collapse of the CTV building is a damming read, and one I would hope will never have to be repeated in New Zealand.

The Royal Commissioners have presented the truth about what happened and why to the 115 victims’ families. It’s what they asked for, and they deserved the respect and honesty outlined in the reports.

It highlighted the direct consequence of unprofessional workmanship, the lack of accountability or responsibility from an industry we all should have faith in for our health and safety.

The impact was not only on 115 people that died and their families, but also the injured and the survivors, who have had to endure what must be the most excruciating distress and grief over the past 22 months.

The price that has been paid for the layers of incompetence is far too high and now the emotional carnage has had to be managed in a

system in New Zealand that does not consider criminal negligence.

Out of the horror of the reality of February 22, 2011, one thing has been a constant, the dignity and the patience of the families that lost so much.

They wanted the truth, they wanted answers and the Royal Commission has delivered that, however unpalatable the reports are.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry (and the coroner’s inquest that has just finished), has kept the agony of their loss and the unanswered questions about ‘why?’ in the media spotlight.

This report will not heal or relieve the anger or the heartache that they must feel. Even though they have the answers to a catastrophic failing and the culpability by nearly everyone involved in the building, what will be the most honourable consequence is to ensure that this never happens again and someone is held accountable.

Watching and listening to Alec Cvetanov has been a lesson in humility and compassion

and something we all could learn from. He has every reason to be revengeful and unforgiving. But, through the despair and the bewilderment he has endured, he simply wanted the people responsible to learn from his wife’s death so nobody else dies in a similar circumstance. Not too much to ask, is it?

The Government now has the obligation to put right our faith in the roles and responsibilities of the building industry and to ensure the systems and funding are in place for our emergency services to respond to any emergency.

The recommendations are there. Now it’s time to put a value on the lives that have been so cruelly taken and the aftermath of sorrow for those left behind.

Farewell to an old friend AFTER all the years of pleasure that QEII has given us, its farewell on Sunday was a sad reflection of how we have become immune to the loss of our social fabric and the loss of our communities. That we sit idly by as the wrecking balls and concrete cutters tear everything we held so dear, apart.

The stage was set for a fitting finale. The entertainment could not be faulted with Sir Ron Scott and Dick Tayler speaking about the history and the significance of what was once called a white elephant.

The Chisnallwood Intermediate School jazz band was sublime, but also poignant as that school is marked to be closed as part of Education Minister Hekia Parata’s education shakeup plan for the city.

The New Brighton Silver Band sat under the mature trees and played a spiritual sing-along to the few who knew about the event, which belied the enormity of another of our heritage loss.

There wouldn’t be too many people living in

Christchurch that did not make a visit to QEII, whether to watch the grandkids’ swimming lessons or Kiwi kids’ triathlons.

Who will ever forget the Eagles opening with Hotel California as the rain poured down, the Commonwealth Games, world and international events including soccer, swimming or athletics. As QEII grew, so did the range of activities and events that were held there.

It also incorporated a sports academy with medical facilities and the gymnastic fraternity’s purpose-built gym. As another community facility bites the dust, maybe it’s time to ponder why we are now centralising our major sporting facilities in the ‘new city’.

The beauty of QEII was the space, much of it green, and the utilisation of the entire park for multiple users. In the mix was the ease of getting to the park, good parking and generally the place that it had in our day-to-day lives.

The new Metro Sports Hub, on the edge of Hagely Park, is obviously going to try to

recreate some of what QEII delivered. But there is a bigger question. How does bringing all the anchor projects into the city actually help how communities access facilities?

Harder still to understand is why cricket has not explored anything but Hagley Park.

Maybe a bit of snobbishness has entered our big plan, as it has been said some people don’t like going to the east. Well, more fool them.

There has been plenty of underinvestment on the ‘other’ side of town but if we want to work as a fully functioning city, it’s time we thought about all the nuances that make a community.

Our wonderland that is the east, with its beaches, the estuary and the hills, should be the very focus of the rebuild and form the spine that connects the diversity of this city that we all love. Two years on, the earthquake aftermath continues to take its toll as communities leave their homes, neighbours and friends, and now their schools.

We must celebrate what we had and what we have lost. QEII deserved a better death.

BRINGING life back to Christchurch’s Arts Centre was all in a day’s work for a group of Halswell Primary School pupils, who spent Monday designing murals to decorate the fences that seal off its broken and damaged buildings.

The goal was to help reintroduce art to the centre’s market square, which has been closed since the February 2011 earthquake.

It was the first of many events planned for the space, which is set to see the return of market stalls from the middle of next month.

Christchurch Arts Centre chief executive Andre Lovatt said the initial aim for the market was to start small but to be compelling and different.

“We’re looking at the possibility of hosting events here. We’re going to have some Maori and Pacific Island artists over the summer as well.”

Fixing the damaged centre will take about seven years and cost an estimated $300 million.

This will be covered by an insurance pay-out of $160 million and more than $14 million from donations, but there will be a $126 million shortfall.

Because of this, the reopening will be carried out in stages. Some of the insurance money will be invested first with interest earned from the remainder of the sum helping to pay the rest of the repairs.

The new registry building will be the first part of the centre to be restored and the intention is to open it by the middle of next year.

The gymnasium building should be reopening

by Christmas next year, while the Boys’ High building is a 30-month project with work planned to start around the middle of next year.

WHEN Nikki Dew looked at the large amount of food on her family’s Christmas table last year she felt a pang of sadness for those in the city that did not have enough to eat.

This year, she’s doing something about it.

Along with her friends Angelique Bott, Lisa Ferguson and Jane Black and many other helpers she formed the Families for Families Trust, which aims to provide food parcels to between 1300 and 1500 families this year.

For each $20 donation, the trust, with help from the Mad Butcher, can put together a food parcel for a family in need, which includes two chickens, 18 sausages, two loaves of Couplands bread, fresh vegetables, frozen vegetables and Greggs jelly.

The parcels will also contain a card saying ‘from our family to yours’.

“The generosity has just been amazing,” Ms Dew said.

Families for Families will work alongside the Salvation Army to distribute the parcels through its community ministries.

“You know that on Christmas another family is eating because of you,” she said.

Ms Dew, an artist, said while many people in Christchurch had bounced back following the earthquakes of the past two years, many others were finding life increasingly hard.

She was looking to expand the Families for Families programme next year.

A CHINESE banquet held at an Addington restaurant last Friday brought together representatives from the many Chinese associations operating in Christchurch, as well as businesspeople and educationalists from the local Chinese community.

Organiser Bernard Duncan, who is chairman of the Christchurch-China Friendly Relations Committee, said it was an opportunity for these people to get to know one another better.

“There are 40 Chinese associations in Christchurch and 20,000 Chinese nationals living here and we feel that they don’t know each other that well, so we thought if we organised a networking event it would give them an opportunity to get together.

IN AN emotional thank you to a grieving widower, Coroner Gordon Matenga got choked up as he empathised with Alec Cvetanov who lost his wife in the CTV building collapse last February.

“I understand completely the hopelessness you must’ve felt that night as you clambered over the ruins of that building knowing that your wife was only metres away from you and powerless to do anything,” Coroner Matenga said at the closing of a three-week hearing into the deaths of eight people that made contact from within the CTV rubble but were unable to be saved.

Alec’s wife, Dr Tamara Cvetanova, who started work at King’s Education just a month before the February 22, 2011 earthquake, was one of them.

He was in cellphone communication with her up to 12 hours after the collapse.

“It is good for us as a country to learn and make improvements so we can be better prepared next time, so thank you,” Coroner Matenga told Mr Cvetanov.

In his evidence, Mr Cvetanov fought back tears as he told the inquest, “I want people responsible for all rescue services in New Zealand to learn

from Tamara’s death so that somebody else does not die in similar circumstances in the future, here or abroad.”

He wanted to know whether Tamara was killed by the fire unable to be put out beneath the rubble, or by further collapses of the building he alleges occurred when layers of rubble started to be removed using heavy machinery.

“There are some who may feel you have been too much of an aggravator in this. I don’t believe so. The point of the inquest process is a full inquiry. It’s to see for ourselves what has happened,” the Coroner told Mr Cvetanov.

“I hope that people will see this inquiry for what it is, which is an opportunity for us to learn from the one or two mistakes that have been made without pointing the finger at any one in particular. I agree with the views that have been expressed at various times through these hearings that those who showed up on the day to the CTV and other sites around Christchurch did the best they could in very trying circumstances,” he said.

The coroner extended his condolences to representatives from the embassies of the Philippines and Japan, who were at the inquest.

History of a disaster-prone building A long series of failures, defects and oversights led to the CTV building’s collapse in the earthquake of February 22, 2011 and the loss of 115 lives. CTV News reporter Gracie Fea spent months covering the hearings of the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission, which released its findings this week.

DAVID Harding was employed by Dr Alan Reay and designed the CTV building in 1986.

He used ETABS, a computer program to test the seismic stability, which commissioners have found he lacked experience in.

He had little experience in multi-storey buildings and the commissioners found he didn’t seek assistance from Dr Reay or anyone else.

Mr Harding said he was not competent to design the building without review of his work, but the commissioners believe that wasn’t his view at the time.

Dr Reay didn’t review Mr Harding’s calculations. There were a number of non compliant aspects of the design, a primary reason being Mr Harding was working beyond his competence.

They say he should have recognised this himself, but also that Dr Reay was aware of Harding’s lack of experience and should have realised the design was pushing him beyond his limits.

They found Dr Reay should not have left Mr Harding to work unsupervised on the design or without a system for review. It led to a deficient

design.

A number of construction defects were identified.

The commission found William Jones may have been a competent foreman, however, he didn’t receive the guidance, mentoring and technical advice he should have and the construction manager, Gerald Shirtcliff, didn’t spend sufficient time on the site to perform his role adequately.

In 1990, Holmes Consulting Group found non-compliant connections between the floors and the north wall.

Alan Reay Consultants was told, but didn’t carry out its own full review of the building, which the commission say it should have.

The company’s solution was steel angles on levels four, five and six, which weren’t installed for almost two years.

The commission found it was a significant issue that had the potential to affect people’s safety and Dr Reay should have acted more expeditiously and proactively.

They also found joints were brittle and lacked ductility, beams and the in-situ concrete in the

columns weren’t roughened, and the north and south walls didn’t perform their intended role.

There were major weaknesses in all of the beam column joints in the building and the floors weren’t adequately tied to the north wall.

The design didn’t comply with the Christchurch City Council’s bylaw and the building permit should not have been issued.

The building manager, John Drew, arranged for David Coatsworth, an engineer, to carry out an assessment after the September 2010 earthquake.

Mr Coatsworth made recommendations for further assessment, which weren’t carried out.

The commissioners are confident Mr Coatsworth was thorough, but he didn’t examine structural drawings as they weren’t able to be accessed from the council.

They found most engineers would have proceeded in the same way.

Mr Coatsworth was not asked to reassess the building after the Boxing Day 2010 aftershock.

The commission found Mr Drew should have spoken to Mr Coatsworth to re-inspect the building.

For her, the findings of the Canterbury Earthquake Royal Commission’s report are not enough.

“I think the justice system and the police need to prosecute, they need to lay charges. To the engineer, Alan Reay, it was his business. He’s the principal of the company, he needed to take responsibility and also the [Christchurch City] council, they signed off the building, and they did the building inspections so they need to be

accountable too,” she said.

Ms Jackson said she would be seeking legal advice following the report.

“We [CTV] were like one big family. I worked with them for 12 years and we were very close. I have to do it for them and their families.”

CTV Families spokesman Peter Brown said the families had various opinions about whether individuals should be held accountable.

“For most of the families the main issue out of the whole thing is this kind of catastrophe doesn’t happen again”

The Chinese Consulate General in Christchurch said the families of the 24 Chinese students who lost their lives in the CTV building appreciated the effort taken by the New Zealand government.

They said the report meant a lot to the families and the findings justified their anger and proved their suspicion that the building’s collapse was related to human error.

They hoped a lot more would be done to ensure those responsible for the collapse would be punished, mistakes corrected, victims compensated and such tragedies never happen again.

THE Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission has made almost 200 recommendations for improvement to New Zealand’s building policies and procedures.

It follows more than 18 months of investigations into building failures which led to deaths in the 6.3 magnitude earthquake of February 22, 2011.

The CTV building was considered a complex structure and the commissioners recommended a structural engineer should be engaged at the same time as the architect for the design of a complex building.

Among the recommendations: • The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment should develop criteria to determine whether a structure is complex, and if it is, a structural engineer should be required to certify the structural integrity of the design.

• The building consent authority should decide whether it has the staff with the appropriate competency to process the application in-house or whether it needs to refer the application on.

• Research needs to be carried out by various organisations as to how and when building safety evaluators should account for aftershocks.

• The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment should establish a core team of building safety evaluators that the Ministry can call on and the building safety evaluation process should incorporate a training programme for all assessors, with the core group required to attend compulsory training.

• Guidelines are developed for forensic engineering after a building collapse.

There was confusion about what green placards meant after the September 2010 earthquake, with people thinking it meant the building was safe.

However, it advised to get a detailed engineering assessment.

• In principle, the colour of the green placard should be changed to white and the placards should be rewritten in a plain English format.

• They also advised all buildings should be subject to a rapid assessment process and then categorised.

• Civil defence and emergency management should be responsible for setting up and maintaining cordons during the state of emergency and territorial authorities responsible for maintaining cordons until the building is made safe. They should be able to recover the costs from the building owner after three months.

• The Institution of Professional Engineers

should clarify its codes of ethics. There should be clarity where the accountability for rectifying any weaknesses in a design rests.

• Institutions need to work with the Ministry to ensure greater collaboration and information sharing between architects and structural engineers.

• Part of the Resource Management Act should be amended to acknowledge the potential effects of earthquakes and liquefaction.

• Regional councils and territorial authorities should ensure they are adequately informed about the seismicity of their regions and districts.

The Royal Commission also released their report into the deaths of 42 people from falling debris or other building collapses in the February earthquake.

It made 36 recommendations relating to this, one of the key ones being all buildings are seismically assessed and the information as to whether they’re above or below the building standard is made public.

The commission’s report was released alongside a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment consultation document looking into the same issues.

The Ministry’s report proposes commercial and multi-storey residential buildings in New Zealand will have to be assessed for seismic strength within five years.

However, that falls short of the recommendations from the Royal Commission, which has recommended commercial and multiunit residential buildings be assessed within two years and brought up to an acceptable standard within five.

The Ministry report also recommends all earthquake-prone buildings be strengthened, or demolished, within 15 years, which gives local authorities five years to carry out assessments, and owners 10 years to strengthen or demolish buildings. That’s compared to an estimated 28 years on average under the current system.

It recommended the current threshold for earthquake-prone buildings, often referred to as 33 per cent of the new building standard, will not be raised.

It’s estimated there are up to 25,000 earthquakeprone buildings in the country.

The Ministry’s document is out for public consultation until March 7.

The Government expects to issue its full response to the Royal Commission’s full report next year.

First wahine at the helm The first female chief executive of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, Arihia Bennett is on a steep learning curve, as Gracie Fea found out.

SHE’S been in Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu all her life, around her whanau (family), the organisation and the politics.

So Arihia Bennett comes in to her new chief executive role with a good sense of what lies ahead.

Appointed in August, her professional background includes serving as the chief executive of He Oranga Pounamu (HOP), which is mandated by Ngai Tahu to organise and integrate health and social services, and being a regional manager for children’s charity Barnardos New Zealand.

She’s held a number of advisory positions to the government, including Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Commissioner following the September 2010 earthquake, and was a director of Ngai Tahu Development Corporation from 1999 until 2002 and chairwoman until 2005.

In 2008, she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Maori and the community.

Her family background, or whakapapa, is to Tuahuriri and also to Ngati Waewae on the West Coast and Ngati Porou in the north on her father’s side.

Her greatest asset, she says, is her gender.

“I’m a woman, and the importance of the nurturing and

the mentoring and the sense of being around in that tautoko (support, backing) and the nature of a woman naturally brings that korowai (cloak) of support. I’ve grown up in that and I’m surrounded by aunties and I’m surrounded by whanonga (behaviour and principles), and great women role models and especially in my own home.

“That’s something I bring with me to the role and I’m hoping it’s something that I can mentor and support other young women into thinking about leadership roles in the future.”

Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu is moving towards a 50,000-strong membership.

Not to be forgotten are the children.

“One of the most significant things in the work we undertake is families are able to be in charge of their own destiny and their self-determination.”

The government’s Whanau Ora implementation programme has just moved through its final sign off stages.

It’s an inclusive inter-agency approach to providing health and social services to build the capacity of all New Zealand families in need. It empowers families as a whole, rather than

focusing separately on individual family members and their problems.

Over next three years $3.454 million will be weaved into the community to work alongside families to enable them to reach their sense of self-determination.

“It’s not about the organisations doing the work, it’s about empowering families to do that work,” Ms Bennett says.

“I am a champion of Whānau Ora. I think many organisations, boards and groups could do with Whānau Ora-ising themselves because it’s about coming together and doing things together.”

She wants to introduce that concept back into Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, which has been successful in its commercial enterprises.

“We’re at the starting line now. You can look forward over these next three years to the implementation and most importantly the outcomes and looking at what outcomes are being achieved with whanau.

“That’s the part we should be looking towards in order to actually see whether or not we can bring return in terms of whanau wellbeing to families.”

AFTER working out of his Christchurch studio in the Bains building in Lichfield Street for 16 years, artist and carver Rua Pick is now based at Whitecliffs.

He was enjoying being in the rural environment, which was more like the place where he was born and grew up, the Bay of Islands, he said.

“I’ve taken on more carving. Working outside is more conducive to working with

tools than my city studio, above an antiques shop, was.”

The fact that his works were inspired by stories from nature meant the surroundings of Whitecliffs were more relevant, too, he said.

Growing up, Mr Pick was immersed in the art world. His father was a ceramic artist and his mother and sister were painters.

He was also strongly influenced by Artistic: Makere Chapman and Rua Pick display a book his Maori culture, which is evident in and one of the artworks that are included in the exhibition the symbolism he incorporates into his at Whitecliffs.

His current carvings are traditional has been involved with their production for Maori musical instruments, taonga puoro, which are made from a variety of almost 25 years, said.

Published in 2006, it followed the earlier publication, Song of Pick and the two books, including limited Waitaha – Histories of a Nation. The New edition, leather-bound versions, opened at his Zealand-produced books cover pre-Maori Whitecliffs studio on Saturday. SAFEKIDS New Zealand and Consumer Affairs are warning parents and caregivers about the potential dangers of swallowing coin lithium batteries.

Coin lithium batteries, commonly found in singing greeting cards, talking books, key remotes, some television remotes and other small electronic devices, can lodge in the throats of babies and young children.

Once lodged, saliva triggers an electrical current that causes a chemical reaction that can severely burn the oesophagus in as little as two hours.

Repairing that damage is painful and can require feeding tubes, breathing tubes and multiple surgeries.

Between March 2009 and February 2012, there were 61 known battery ingestion-related cases at Starship Children’s Health. Seventeen of the cases required general anaesthetic to have the battery removed and for further treatment.

The threat of button battery ingestion injuries is invisible. Many devices containing these

batteries were not children’s toys and have compartments that were easy to open, Ann Weaver, director of Safekids New Zealand said.

“Too often, these devices are left within reach of young children. Talking books, singing greeting cards and car key remotes, for example, are often shared with children for their amusement. The batteries inside, if swallowed, can cause serious injury and even death,” she said.

Safekids New Zealand and Consumer Affairs want to raise awareness about this issue by providing easy steps that parents and caregivers can take to prevent injuries to children.

Parents and caregivers are advised to examine devices, making sure the battery compartment is secure; keep coin-sized button batteries out of sight and reach; if swallowing is suspected, go immediately to your local A&E, or call 0800 POISON (0800 764 766).

They are also asked to tell others about the threat and share the safety messages.

A VISIT to China, dissatisfaction with the direction education is heading and the lure of more family time all contributed to Broadfield School principal Chris Snook’s decision to call time on a teaching career that spanned more than 40 years.

Mr Snook’s retirement takes effect from the end of term four this year, ending his 22-year tenure at Broadfield, during which time the school’s roll has grown from 39 to 107 pupils.

After studying for three years at Christchurch Teachers College, his career began when he was “dropped in the deep end” at Sumner School in 1970 with a class of 39 year five children. His first yearly salary was about $3200.

After this first year he headed to Hari Hari on the West Coast to complete the country service he needed to move up the pay scale, before taking up a position at Lincoln Primary School in 1973. He spent 17 years there, including a short time as acting principal, before taking the principal’s job at Broadfield.

Mr Snook said he had been contemplating retirement ever since he took a trip to China in October last year and was able to tick off three bucket list items: walking on the Great Wall, standing in the middle of Tiananmen Square and seeing the buried army of terracotta warriors in Xian.

The new twist on the familiar favourite Christmas song is in support of the ‘Forget the Bling Bling, Do the Whanau Thing’ campaign, which was initiated three years ago.

Chief executive Judi Clements said it was a good example of how to relieve stress and anxiety related to the season.

“Christmas has become so commercialised; there’s so much pressure to buy, buy, buy. The credit card can take a real hammering at this time of year and people are left with the stress of paying off debt,” Ms Clements said.

“Spending time with family is what is important and there are lots of low-cost or even no-cost things people can do to make Christmas special.

“Giving doesn’t have to be expensive – giving your time, your words or your presence is often more useful than an object.”

The 12 Days of Christmas song suggests gifts like shoulder rubs, art work from grandchildren, meditation training, homemade scones, a hand in the garden and even Gangnam Style dance lessons.

CASHMERE High School’s junior theatresports team is buzzing with excitement, having taken the top prize in the South Island Junior Theatresports competition.

A total of six teams competed in the final, held at the Court Theatre in Addington on Sunday.

Cashmere High School teacher in charge of drama Annabel Meredith said the students, from years nine and 10, did not place in the three rounds of heats but were drawn as a wildcard entry for the finals.

The event, organised by the Court Theatre along the lines of popular television show Whose Line is it Anyway?, had six schools in the finals.

Ms Meredith said for the finals the team had to choose which theatresports games to perform and incorporate suggestions from the audience.

They were judged on their technique and entertainment value.

“The kids were ecstatic… our year nines were über-excited to have actually won,” she said.

At Cashmere, the senior theatresports team coaches and mentors the junior team, so the win was a double success – the juniors are taking home the same shield the current seniors won back in 2010 when they were juniors themselves.

The senior team had placed second in the seniors’ competition, which was held at the end of school term three.

“These students have all been involved in drama and I guess all that confidence shows. They are willing to just give it a go,” Ms Meredith said.

Along with the theatresports shield, the Cashmere students received tickets to the Court Theatre production of Grease.

Community groups Motorway opens to city-bound traffic recognised STAGE one of Christchurch’s new Southern Motorway opened to city-bound traffic on Monday. Motorists can now use both the city-bound and southbound lanes of the new motorway.

The Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 1 (CSM1) is one of a package of roading projects that make up Christchurch’s Roads of National Significance (RoNS) programme. It is the first of these projects to be finished in the South Island.

GROUPS of volunteers who showed their commitment to the South Christchurch community were celebrated at a special ceremony in Cashmere last week.

The Christchurch City Council’s Spreydon Heathcote Community Board held its annual Community Service Awards at Cashmere Hills Presbyterian Church, to recognise individuals and groups that contributed significant voluntary service.

This year three groups received awards.

Addington Action, which was set up to provide emergency relief following the February 2011 earthquake, received a group award for its work providing food parcels, assisting with Red Cross grant applications for blankets and heaters, clearing earthquake rubble, arranging free repairs to vulnerable citizens’ homes that

Volunteers honoured for service SOUTH Christchurch residents who have given their time to better their communities have been honoured in the annual Community Service Awards.

The awards were given out by the Christchurch City Council’s Spreydon Heathcote Community Board last week.

This year 10 people received awards for a range of service including post-earthquake support, sporting administration and art installations.

Andrew Busch was recognised for managing a ‘Citizens’ Earthquake Café’ following the February 2011 earthquake. Along with a group of volunteers, he served hot drinks and food to people in the central city cordon between 1am and 3am. He also started a Facebook page called ‘Need Help after Christchurch Earthquake’, which helped many people access the help they needed with things like removing chimneys or moving house.

Catherine Gabites was honoured for her service in sports administration with the Cashmere Technical Football Club, including the merger between Cashmere Wanderers and Woolston Technical. She also manages the club’s website, produces the club’s newsletter, looks after gear and organises team photos.

Businessman Rob Gould was acknowledged for his contribution to Sydenham after he moved his business there from the central city following the February 2011 earthquake. Mr Gould has been helping develop an earthquake renewal strategy for the area and provides ongoing liaison with the Christchurch City Council.

Sydenham’s Dorothy Haywood has been an active member of St James Presbyterian Church for 20 years and since retiring as principal of Sydenham Primary School she has been involved in numerous community projects in Spreydon and Sydenham. These include a foot clinic for the elderly, running a youth group, working for Whareora House

and co-ordinating ‘Friends of the Sydenham Heritage Church’ which raised funds to restore the church until it was destroyed following the earthquakes.

Peter and Joyce Majendie of the Side Door Arts Trust and Opawa Baptist Church were recognised for bringing art into community spaces all over Christchurch with familyorientated and interactive installations including last year’s ‘Ark of Hope’ in Sydenham and the 185 White Chairs earthquake memorial.

Bill Pierson was honoured for his work collecting rubbish near the Heathcote River, being an active member of the Stroke Society, helping Rotary with fundraising and service, helping at model railways exhibitions and delivering residents’ newsletters, all of which he does despite having had a stroke and being partially blind.

Greening the Rubble’s Rhys Taylor was recognised for his work providing temporary green spaces at post-earthquake sites, turning rubble into 11 parks and places of beauty including an outdoor music room, and an urban garden and petanque court in Sydenham.

As a Beckenham Neighbourhood Association committee member for nearly three decades, Peter Tuffley has served in many ways including as chairperson, working on sub-committees, writing submissions and the newsletter, developing a Facebook page, fostering community relationships and organising community events such as the Beckenham Barbeque each year.

The youth award went to year 13 student Lauren Alexander, who plays in the Women’s Division 1 team for Cashmere Technical Football Club (CTFC) and for Riccarton High Girls’ First Xl. She also coaches and manages the CTFC 10th Grade (10-year-olds) girls and juggles all of this with her studies.

POLICE are taking a hard line on those who allow incapable people to drive their cars.

Canterbury road policing manager Inspector Al Stewart said if police could prove a vehicle owner knew the person they were letting drive their vehicle was drunk, on drugs or breaching their licence conditions, they would bring criminal charges.

A 22-year-old man, who was a friend of a teenage driver killed in a crash at Rangiora on May 25, was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court yesterday charged with aiding and abetting someone driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Meanwhile, Inspector Stewart said avoiding driver fatigue, wearing your seatbelt and taking an extra look down your driveway in case children were playing there were key ways to keep everyone safe on the roads this summer.

He said when heading out of town for the holidays people should plan their trip, take their time, have lots of stops and share the driving.

“It’s not about getting to where you are going quickly; it’s about getting to where you are going safely.”

Inspector Stewart said during the holiday season there tended to be fewer crashes, but the ones which did happen were more serious, particularly on state highways.

He also said there were 7000 tickets, each with a $150 fine, issued in Canterbury each year for people not wearing seatbelts, which was far too many.

“There were 31 fatalities on Canterbury roads this year and a third of those would have been

PUBLIC rock climbing parks, similar to skate parks, would be a good way of promoting physical activity in the earthquake rebuild, a sports science expert says.

University of Canterbury academic Dr Nick Draper said it presented the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera), the government and Christchurch City Council an opportunity to examine some novel ways of encouraging people to be active in the city centre. Bringing rock climbing to the city would be one such way.

“As Christchurch is already a place where many climbers reside and visit then it makes sense to incorporate public bouldering into the new public space master plan. Bouldering is a sub-sport of climbing where short routes called problems are performed near enough to

As climbing was not exclusively a youth sport, studies overseas had found that the presence of urban bouldering had reduced anti-social behaviour by providing a known source of adult surveillance.

“I believe Christchurch is a climbers’ city and the strategic placement of some basic or sculptural public bouldering facilities would invigorate a sense of active and social place which will draw upon the city’s existing strengths to foster connectivity,” Dr Draper said. “This connectivity will be essential for the success of Christchurch’s evolution.’’

That local climbing centres were well used was evidence of the sport’s popularity, which was still growing among young people, he said.

Dr Draper also advocated for improving cycling infrastructure during the rebuild.

TWO Lincoln University students are part of a New Zealand contingent of 68 which left for Japan on Sunday to study firsthand the effects of the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.

As part of the Kizuna Project – a youth exchange programme launched by the Japanese government – Michelle Ruske, who has recently completed her Bachelor of Environmental Management and Planning degree, and current Bachelor of Landscape Architecture student, Tim Reed, will spend just over a week in Japan, taking in lectures, visiting disaster areas and meeting with individuals personally affected by the disaster.

Both students saw the trip as having relevance to their chosen fields.

“As a planner, the rebuild of Christchurch will feature heavily in my future career. I was prompted to

The exchange programme itself is implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Centre, a public organisation that works closely with aid agencies and a wide range of International bodies, such as the United Nations.

While the ultimate goal is to promote global understanding of Japan’s revival efforts, it’s also used as an opportunity to increase the awareness of Japanese culture. As such, both students were to spend time with a homestay family as well as a short time in Tokyo.

Reforms threaten safety, VTNZ says PROPOSED changes to the inspection of trucks and heavy vehicles are economic sleight of hand and could compromise safety instead of improving it, Vehicle Testing New Zealand (VTNZ) chief executive Mike Walsh says.

The government is due to announce significant changes to heavy vehicle inspections before Christmas as part of the Vehicle License Reform programme. At present, inspectors do not repair trucks, but VTNZ says that independence is likely to go when the changes are made.

Mr Walsh said while most operators with good safety practices would take the same professional approach to fleet safety as they did now, it would be naïve to think everyone would do the right thing.

“Removing independence from the inspections means more emphasis on self-regulation and a big investment in auditing, compliance and enforcement – without those safeguards, it can be very hard to maintain the standard and integrity of inspections.”

Her neighbours are a group of hard-drinking hillbilly and misfit shrimp fishermen, who have a fierce desire to stay in their own part of ‘paradise’, even when Mother Nature and local authorities have other ideas.

A robotics competition venue, a creative and cultural youth space, and an exhibition of art sculptures that powered the city, were the three ideas selected.

App makes life easier in the field LOSING his job after the February 2011 earthquake gave Christchurch electrical engineer Luther Keats the opportunity to use his experience to create an iPad app that would make information gathering about land and buildings much easier.

“A few years ago I did some work in the United Kingdom commissioning generators, and experienced for myself the nightmare of paperwork – stacks of notes and memory sticks full of unsorted photos which would take hours to compile into professional reports,” Mr Keats said.

To solve the problem he joined forces with fellow electrical engineer Filipp Prager, and over about a year the pair has developed the app, which they call Report Monster.

“There were a few iterations and added features along the way – we’re up to version eight or 10 now,” Mr Keats said.

“With Report Monster, all of the photos and associated information is captured digitally on site, and a report is instantly generated by the software,” Mr Prager said.

“Once the report is finished, it can be attached to an email or uploaded directly to a cloud storage service such as Dropbox – so it’s saving you time, while helping to improve the accuracy of reports.”

The iPad was the ideal fit for the program, Mr Keats said.

Using the iPad’s built-in camera, mobile internet connection and user friendly touchscreen, it allows the user to produce technical reports with forms, photos and maps, and quickly add notes and mark-ups such as dimensions.

Report Monster is available in a cut-down version at no cost on the Apple App Store and thousands of people have downloaded it.

The full version, Enterprise, was being sold directly to businesses, and a number of clients had signed up for it, Mr Prager said.

“One of the key differences with it is that you can add custom forms, which makes data collection a lot quicker,” he said. “It’s good for

When the original iPad launched back in 2010 the pair had immediately seen the potential for portable business applications, Mr Keats said.

The ability to easily compile and organise photos and notes on a tablet, and then upload them to the cloud wirelessly while in the field is the key to our

Later, the plant was named poinsettia after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the United States ambassador to Mexico, who introduced the plant to his country in 1825. In the US, National Poinsettia Day is marked on December 12, the date Poinsett died, but its purpose is to enjoy the beauty of this popular holiday plant.

The largest breeder of poinsettias is Ecke Ranch in California, home of the world’s leading poinsettia variety ‘Prestige’. The most popular red poinsettia sold in New Zealand, ‘Prestige’ was selected for its eye-catching, vibrant, dark-red colouring, which doesn’t fade like some of its predecessors. Its ability to hold on to its shape and colour for long periods of time enhance its value as an indoor colour option over the summer months.

he poinsettia’s origins date back five centuries to Mexico. The Aztecs called it the star flower, while in Peru and parts of Chile the poinsettia (Euphorbia Euphorbia pulcherrima) pulcherrima is widely known as Crown of the Andes.

Legend has it the plant’s association with Christmas began in the 16th century in Mexico. A charming story is told of Pepita, a poor Mexican girl who had no gift to present the Christ Child at Christmas Eve services.

As Pepita walked slowly to the chapel with her cousin Pedro, her heart was filled with sadness rather than joy. “I am sure, Pepita, that even the most humble gift, if given in love, will be acceptable in his eyes,” said Pedro consolingly.

Not knowing what else to do, Pepita knelt by the roadside and gathered a handful of common weeds, fashioning them into a small bouquet. Looking at the scraggly bunch of weeds, she felt more saddened and embarrassed than ever by the humbleness of her offering. She fought back a tear as she entered the small village chapel. Poinsettias do not need a lot of fertilising as they are generally treated like a bunch of flowers and discarded when the colours fade in autumn. In saying this, they can be repotted, cut back and fertilised with a general fertiliser once they have finished flowering in autumn.

BUSKING fans will have no shortage of places to enjoy next month’s buskers’ festival, which will be the 20th running of the event in Christchurch.

There are 15 venues around the city where people can catch a show every day and night of the festival.

As always the festival’s daytime street and stage shows are available for everyone to experience with artists passing the hat at the end of their show.

There will also be a selection of evening indoor theatrestyle shows with entrance by donation. Seats can be secured to attend 10 of the evening shows through the website worldbuskersfestival.com.

World Buskers Festival artistic director Jodi Wright said by securing a seat online for those nights’ indoor shows people won’t miss out.

“Last year, a lot of people missed out on getting a seat to our popular indoor evening shows as they hadn’t realised they could pre-book. This year we want to get the word out that you can trade a donation for a seat online and ensure you get to see the show.”

The evening shows available to pre-book are: • Moving Stationery presented by MWH Mainzeal. Moving Stationery is a multi-award-winning solo physical comedy created and performed by Thom Monckton.

• Gamarjobat (R16) presented by Ingham. Gamarjobat are appreciated worldwide and were chosen as one of “the 100 most respected Japanese people in the world” in the Japanese-edition of Newsweek magazine.

• Sammy J & Randy presented by Ingham. As a solo act, Sammy J has performed with his puppet Randy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Montreal Just For Laughs and throughout Australia as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) Roadshow and Gala.

• Hirepool Nothing But Stand Up. Some of the best comedians in Australasia bring an eclectic mix of standup comedy to the festival, hosted by Urzila Carlson.

• Keith Preene’s Golden Goose Bingo makes its debut at the festival especially for the 20th birthday. It was previously the resident bingo show of Lyttelton’s Loons theatre.

• Le Gateau Chocolat. With his oversized suitcases packed with 72 kilos of drag Gateau is ready to unleash a confection of mesmerising songs on his unsuspecting audience.

• iSite Late Night with the Buskers is a mix of comedy, cabaret and circus. Hosted by Wilson Dixon, with Justine Smith.

• Buskers Burlesque. Joining the show from the New York burlesque scene are world-class performance duo Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey. From Seattle, the enviable Lily Verlaine and straight from his world tour is boy-lesquer Jett Adore from Chicago.

• Hot Dub Time Machine travelling dance party. Bring your dancing shoes.

• Beca Buskers Best Bits (R18). Hosted by Justine Smith, of Christchurch, winner of the 2003 Billy T Award, as seen on the Comedy Gala and host of TV3’s Divas.

The 2013 SCIRT World Buskers Festival runs from January 17 to January 27.

End of magpies, summer and cycling is easy

road rage to the district.

But an end to the magpie time of year does herald a change of season, bringing me to my next topic - summer!

Now I will embrace the fact that here in New Zealand, summer can be winter, autumn or spring within a day.

In addition to such drastic climatic changes we tend to have periods of one to two months of cracker or shocker weather.

Most would vouch for the latter in December but recent scorching temperatures and windless days have me, the optimist, enthusiastic.

And what an impact it has on the motivation to ride your bike!

It is also a whole lot faster, and physiologically (your heart, lungs and legs) and mentally a whole lot easier.

While I’m going to accept the regular (but certainly a minority) day of rain, I’m declaring a state of warm and dry bike riding zest on Christchurch.

C A N T E R B U RY ’ S five debutants could hardly have hoped for a better start to their international careers for the Black Sticks women’s hockey team than being part of a 7-2 victory over India in Napier on Saturday, in the first of a five match series.

Unusual for one surname to dominate the news YOU could be thinking the name I’m talking about is Smith. Let’s face it, there are millions of us around the world!

In fact the name on everyone’s lips is Taylor. It all started a month ago with the unceremonious sacking of Christchurch Girls High School’s respected principal, Prue Taylor.

The Employment Relations Authority overturned the dismissal, she has been temporarily reinstated and started back yesterday, a day after the pupils left for the annual Christmas holidays!

The second Taylor was the talented Crusader and Canterbury first-five-eight come full-back, Thomas Taylor, who arrived at Heathrow Airport in jandals, shorts and tee shirt in zero-degree temperatures having received a SOS call from All Black coach Steve Hansen while he was in Phuket enjoying a well-earned break from a rigorous rugby season. As it turned out the player he had been called up to cover for, Dan Carter, took the field against England and Taylor returned with Christmas presents from Harrods and a full kit bag of the latest All Black gear!

However, the biggest story involving the name Taylor occurred last weekend when the Black

Caps captain, Ross Taylor, found out four days before the first test against Sri Lanka that he was to be stripped of the role in all forms of the game and be replaced by the controversial choice Brendon McCullum.

The fallout has been horrendous. To say it was badly handled is one of the greatest understatements of all time. It was appalling timing and heads must roll for the disgraceful way the whole saga has played out.

To compound the problem, Taylor went out and virtually won the second test over there single-handedly. This action speaks volumes for the character of the man. He was determined to lead from the front and lead by example.

Now, I have no argument with the ultimate decision because like most of you all, I’m not close enough to know which man is the best for the job. What I do know is that this is not the way New Zealanders treat one another! People at headquarters must pay the price for the actions of the chairman, the board and the coach, and a total cleanout is the option that appeals to me.

Merry start for new Black Sticks

CAN we finally say au revoir to the pesky, territorial menace from the sky, the magpie that haunts the brightly-coloured and perfectly sized and projected targets - road cyclists?

I thought we were in luck when I hadn’t been swooped before October had swung around. Of course I insisted my luck was in part due to my intelligence - group riding (safety in numbers) and picking the right (macrocarpaless) route.

I’ve been ‘swooped’ as early as July in the past so I was adamant that either numbers had fallen or the former (my intelligence).

How wrong I was and how reminded I was a couple of weeks ago, after I received a familiar swoosh and tap on the shoulder.

I must point out that I’m not a magpie-basher or gun-shooting-pest advocate.

I’m not too dark on magpies as I’ve never had more than an aforementioned tap. Albeit not friendly, I’ve thought of swoops in lighter terms of late as I endeavour to contribute a little less

VOLUNTEERS of Wainoni Avonside Community Services Trust were congratulated for their efforts last week.

International Volunteer Day is celebrated annually on December 5 to recognise the efforts of volunteers, who dedicate their time to worthy causes.

Co-ordinator Betty Chapman said the event was a complete surprise for the volunteers, who thought they were attending for other reasons.

“I had to get some of the volunteers in by

false intentions; if they had known the truth they may not have come in. My volunteers are reluctant heroes.”

Christchurch councillor for BurwoodPegasus Ward Glenn Livingstone congratulated the volunteers as Mrs Chapman handed out their gift hampers.

“Volunteers are the heart of most organisations. Here and throughout the country volunteers contribute a great amount,” he said.

“I would honestly be here an extra four to five hours a week minimum without the volunteers,” she said.

The Wainoni Avonside Community Services Trust was created 11 years ago, initiated by the Wainoni Methodist church, as they felt there was a large number of isolated elderly in the eastern suburbs.

The church advertised in a local paper for someone who could run the initiative and Mrs Chapman applied and got the position. The trust holds projects and events for elderly people such as art and celebrations, which are run by volunteers. Mrs Chapman is responsible for co-ordinating the trust and interviewed people from the area to find out what programmes people wanted.

As a result six programmes began for the community including craft, sit and be fit, cooking, walking, indoor bowls and information lectures. Since then tai chi, line dancing and Zumba have been added to the list. The programme’s goals are to meet social, physical, health and psychological needs.

“I applied and the rest is history. Two weeks after I started here the numbers just swelled and I really haven’t looked back since then,” Mrs Chapman said.

The numbers have diminished by about a quarter due to the Christchurch earthquakes but many of the ‘red-zoners’ that had to leave the area are still attending the group.

“They often say to me that they cannot find another group like this over in their new suburbs. I tell them that they never will,” she said.

our gifted and Talented extension students (gaTe) from Year 10, 11, and 12 went on a science trip recently to the university of canterbury to research DNa fingerprinting. The first item on the agenda for the group was to learn the basics of DNa structure. The aim for the day was then to match a number of suspects’ DNa from DNa taken from a ‘murder scene’. The first experiment was to practise extracting water from a bowl with a special tool designed specifically for DNa and then to extract DNa from tubes. once this was mastered, the DNa was put into a gel track and then into an electronic DNa machine which eventually ‘sucked’ the DNa down the gel track. it was then up to the students to see which suspects’ DNa was similar to the DNa from the murder scene. The students found their ‘suspect’.

This final Mairehau newsletter for 2012 acknowledges the strengths of our teaching staff and the wide ranging interests and abilities of our wonderful students. i would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the Mairehau high School community for their wonderful work and support in 2012. all of this work culminated in a superb education review office report in December. This report confirms the quality of education available to all students at Mairehau high School. Key details from this report are included in this newsletter.

The group all had a fantastic day and would like to thank the university for their time – this opportunity gave them a sample of just one of the many Science subjects they offer.

i would also like to thank and congratulate all of our students for their efforts and achievements during the year. our results profile in Ncea continues to match or exceed national indicators.

Staff Achievements Mr. Trevor George (Team Leader of Social Sciences) Trevor was awarded study leave for 2012 and completed a Post graduate Diploma in education (endorsed in leadership) from university of canterbury this year. he completed these studies while concurrently working as our Social Sciences team leader. our school celebrates opportunities for our curriculum leaders to enhance their leadership skills and qualifications, and we look forward to the benefits Trevor will bring to the school in 2013.

Ms Sally Unwin (Team Leader of Health; Specialist Classroom Teacher) Sally will take leave from her teaching duties in 2013 as a successful post graduate study applicant for The Postgraduate Diploma in education endorsed in hōaka Pounamu: Te reo Māori Bilingual and immersion Teaching (university of canterbury). This programme is designed to extend teachers in the use of te reo Māori in the classroom. Sally has a key role in meeting the needs of Maori learners at our school, so this study opportunity will provide material benefits for the educational aspirations of our whanau.

Loch Katrine on 27th october 11 of our Year 12 and 13 students, along with 5 staff and 1 dog, headed off for an overnight excursion to the wilderness of loch Katrine. once they arrived at the remote (but beautiful) alpine destination of lake Taylor, the students were confronted with a reality somewhat different to what they were used to – no technology, no running water and no electricity! First on the agenda was a casual stroll into loch l Katrine although an hour into the walk it appeared it was more of a struggle to stand upright with the unexpected gale force nor’westers! it was blatantly obvious at this stage that pitching tents, rafting on the 5 foot waves and fishing for salmon would not be on the agenda so the group did an ’about turn’ and ran the 5km back to lake lake Taylor. after a quick discussion about ‘what to do’, plan c was implemented which involved establishing the group at Balmoral. Fishing the hurunui was a highlight, especially for one student who appeared confused between the skill of casting a fishing rod and diving! unfortunately the quota of fish wasn’t quite what was expected so the group settled down for a ‘feed’ of sausages and salad. eeling and spotlighting was the night time entertainment – not too successful but lots of fun.

The trip was 100% student directed, with students constructing the itinerary, formulating the menu and deciding upon equipment lists. They are to be congratulated on their thorough planning, and near faultless implementation. all students were offered unit standards towards their Ncea learning Plan.

Mrs Kelly Penny (Teacher of Science and Biology) Kelly has gained a university of canterbury Study leave award for 2013. She is doing a Postgraduate Diploma in education, focusing on the Science curriculum, contemporary issues in curriculum and diversity, and Maori knowledge as the basis of education. She is doing several research methodology papers as well. Kelly has completed five years as a teacher at our school, and this refreshment study leave will enable her to bring new, exciting approaches to science education when she returns in 2014.

Mrs Joan Letufuga (Team Leader of Learning Resource Centre) Joan completed her Post graduate Diploma in education Psychology through Massey university at the albany site in auckland this year. This opportunity was made possible through a full-time study award from the Ministry of education. The course included learning to use psych testing tools, extensive research of various learning challenges, and developing a school system review process. highlights of the course included access to a high level of expertise and research from lecturers, as well as a wide range of relevant research. Joan hopes to apply new learning in her job at our school in 2013.

Mr Greig Cowley (Year 9 Dean; teacher of Mathematics) & Mr Shaun Harnett (Teacher of Mathematics; Technology teacher support) greig and Shaun are acknowledged leaders in technology innovation at our school. This year they participated in the national u-learn Technology in education conference at Sky city, auckland, in october, along with school technology leaders from across the country. The conference further enhanced opportunities for participants to increase iT skills in education, in order to improve outcomes for students. Networking opportunities were also useful.

There were over 300 workshops, with world renowned keynote speakers. greig and Shaun were particularly interested in BYoD (Bring Your own Device) initiatives, as this is a focus for our school from 2013.

Mr Robert Van Doorn (Team Leader of Physical Disabilities Resource Centre) robert is a highly experienced team leader, working in the special education sector at Mairehau. This year he has been at the forefront of developments to implement South Pacific education courses for our special needs students from 2013. These courses will provide a valid and acknowledged qualifications pathway for students unable to participate fully in Ncea programmes. Meeting the needs of all students is at the heart of robert’s work, as they align to the school’s core values.

Mr Josh Haythornthwaite (Teacher of Geography and Social Studies) Josh has successfully completed his two years of provisional teacher registration at our school. he has made a significant contribution as a teacher of both the social sciences and the sciences. as a former student of Mairehau high, he has made a strong connection with the school and has contributed significantly to the highly regarded Mairehau legends basketball programme. he co-ordinated the senior boys’ team’s successful involvement at the South island tournament this year. Josh will begin his third year of teaching at our school in 2013.

Mrs Lucy Mackie (Teacher of Art, Photography and Social Studies) lucy has also completed her provisional teacher registration programme at our school this year. She has been instrumental in supporting and sustaining the quality of our visual arts programmes for the last two years, as the Photography specialist. lucy has strengths in the arts and social sciences. her contributions to netball coaching, and to supporting students for the various art exhibitions they present for, have been excellent. lucy’s third year of teaching will be at Mairehau in 2013. She also plans to do the Diploma in Digital Photography through the Southern institute of Technology (S.i.T), via correspondence, next year. her aim is to up-skill in specific areas of Photography.

Southshore gets together

Container shops suggested for South Brighton Jessica Schaap

A SOUTHSHORE community picnic was held on Sunday at a resident’s home in Rocking Horse Road, Southshore.

It was organised by the Southshore Residents Association and about 150 people turned up to join in the fun. There was plenty on offer including music, a sausage sizzle, water slide, lolly scrambles, three-legged race and an egg and spoon race.

Vivienne Johnson from the Southshore Residents Association said it was a great event for the community.

“We’ve got a number of people leaving from the red zone this week. It’s a chance for people to get together.”

The money was raised to go towards the Southshore Community House, which is used by groups and community activities.

ELDERLY residents in the Wainoni Avonside community had the opportunity to attend a free pampering session last week.

Attendees were treated to haircuts, foot massages, eyebrow waxes, manicures and style advice from beauty practitioners, who volunteered their time and services.

Co-ordinator Betty Chapman said the event is held once a year before Christmas.

“I hold the pamper day usually in the first week of December and then the ladies can feel all relaxed and pampered ready for Christmas.

“It is one thing they can tick off for Christmas.”

Ms Stewart said container-style shops were a great way to get business booming again.

Remaining businesses in the area have lost business due to road works and the one-way bridge access. The bridge was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.

There have been different options considered for the location of the container shops but no decisions have been made.

THE Christchurch City Council has approved the Draft New Brighton Centre Master Plan to be released for public comment. The council-led plan has been prepared to support the recovery and rebuild of New Brighton’s centre in response to the damage caused by the earthquakes. The plan will be available from Monday, December 17, 2012, to view in any of the council’s open service centres and libraries. The final date for written comments is 5pm on Monday, February 18, 2013.

BURWOOD-Pegasus Community Board chairperson Linda Stewart said she has been trying to get council permission to put container-style shops in South New Brighton.

Businesses on Bridge Street in South Brighton were closed on November 8.

The buildings, which included a dairy, bakery, fish and chip shop, liquor store and chemist, were yellow-stickered and assessments are currently taking place to determine whether the buildings will be fixed or rebuilt. Some business owners went elsewhere, while others had no choice but to wait.

Generously supported by the Canterbury Community Trust, the annual event for the Child Cancer Foundation was hosted by Mainland Press director Charlotte Smulders, who last year took over the organising of the party.

She continues the legacy of Diana and Robbie Robinson who both passed away in 2010 and had organised the Christmas parties for more than 30 years.

Papanui service station is back PUMPING

Drivers will be pleased to hear that BP 2go Papanui on Papanui Road is back PUMPING from 5.30am on Thursday December 13. Customers will be happy to again be able to fill their tanks, get their cars washed, grab a coffee or something to eat and stock up on ice for their party.

THREE art students’ works have been selected for the University of Canterbury’s permanent art collection.

The artworks were judged by director of the Centre for New Zealand Art and Discovery, and the Guy Fisher Gallery, Linda Tyler.

The three students’ artworks were chosen from the Select art exhibition held last week. The Art Acquisition Committee began obtaining student artwork in 2009 to showcase the best final year and postgraduate student artwork.

Lana Burtenshaw’s sculpture called Hardcore #2 was selected and was about environmental change due to human impact.

The painting, Cloud Cloud, by Rachael Dewhirst was chosen and was described by Ms Tyler as where “lyric colour occludes an experimental approach to structure”.

Ms Dewhirst did not expect to be selected because of the quality of the other artwork.

“It was a big surprise actually because you never know what the outside judges are looking for.”

Makoto Takuoka created a short film called The Poor Man, which is a film in the artistic style of German expressionism and filming method of stop-motion animation. It is about the disparity between extreme wealth and poverty. After the financial crisis in 2008 Takuoka wanted to create a film to raise people’s awareness of current social and political issues.

COTSWOLD School recently collected rubbish that was littering Bishopdale Park during their lunchtime.

Eco Crusader co-ordinator and teacher Jo Holdem said while parents and preschool children played on the playground the Cotswold children collected rubbish which was littering their environment.

“What looked like a tidy park actually had quite a bit of rubbish such as cans, paper and food wrappers.

“Looking after their local park has become a tradition in the Cotswold School community with this being the third year of clean-up. The children really look forward to their trip to the park and are really excited about cleaning up,” she said.

Grant to fund research on stainless steel piping A UNIVERSITY of Canterbury researcher has received a $750,000 study grant from Methanex New Zealand Ltd, the country’s only methanol manufacturer and a subsidiary of Canada-based Methanex Corporation – the world’s largest methanol supplier.

The grant is to fund research to improve the performance of stainless steel piping.

UC mechanical engineering professor Milo Kral said the certainty of substantial funding over the next five years will allow forward planning of a comprehensive research programme in the area of high temperature materials and stateof-the-art equipment to produce world-class research.

“The ongoing support of Methanex has been one of the most rewarding partnerships for us at UC. For more than 10 years Methanex has provided funding for research projects focused on improving the performance of stainless steel piping used in steam methane reforming, a key process in the conversion of natural gas to methanol.

“The performance of materials is measured in terms of microns at temperatures as high as 1200C, which is obviously a difficult task that requires specialised equipment developed specifically for this purpose.

“The effects of exposure to such harsh environments are also analysed using electron microscopes. Overall, the process of conducting the research produces a result for Methanex, trains our students to work in the industry and raises UC’s profile.”

Most of the UC research has been related to the topic of high-temperature metallurgy, which is a specific field of study that is linked to the equipment used in the methanol reforming process.

This has provided a better understanding of the materials important to production and has allowed significant improvements to be made in the performance and life of critical components within the reforming process.

The opportunity has been taken to formalise the relationship with UC by establishing the Methanex Chair in Metallurgy with Professor Kral as the first incumbent.

The agreement will provide certainty of funding for future student research projects as well as allowing Professor Kral to contribute more time directly to Methanex projects.

Methanex’s managing director Harvey Weake said the relationship with UC had been mutually beneficial.

“It has allowed us to provide a sound educational platform for young engineers while at the same time learn and benefit from their engineering solutions.

“We look forward to continuing and strengthening our partnership over the coming years.”

The agreement between Methanex and UC will consolidate all the work done to date and will provide a better forward-planning protocol.

Methanex New Zealand and its precursor companies have benefitted over the years from dozens of engineers who have learnt their profession at UC. Methanex New Zealand owns two methanol facilities in Taranaki – the Motunui and Waitara Valley sites. Currently, the company is producing 1.5 million tonnes of methanol per year and contributes $305 million to the Taranaki GDP and $455 million to the New Zealand GDP annually. More than 90 per cent of the methanol produced in New Zealand is sold for export to markets in Japan, Korea and China.
