ratte-ciel, l’une des œuvres qui lui a valu ce prix, s’inspire en partie de l’architecture de Dubaï. Julien est conscient de l’ironie du fait que ses dessins sont réalisés à partir de sable, matière sur laquelle sont également construits (au propre comme au figuré) les immeubles de Dubaï. « Fragiles, mes œuvres ont aussi un côté destructeur ». On retrouve aussi cet aspect dans Les Traversées, projections en direct de petites voitures soumises à des « séismes » provoqués par la vibration d’une enceinte stéréo. La musique joue un rôle important dans ses œuvres (il a étudié au conservatoire de Metz), auxquelles il intègre maintenant du matériel audio (platines, baladeurs...). Julien Grossmann vit actuellement à Rotterdam depuis qu’il a terminé son master au Dutch Art Institute. « Mais je reviens assez souvent ici, car je veux rester proche de la Grande Région. » Q

ne of the pieces for which Julien won the prize, Gratte-Ciel, is partly inspired by the architecture of Dubai. The irony of the fact that the drawings are made of sand, and that Dubai’s buildings are also built on sand – physically and figuratively – is not lost on Julien. “My works are fragile but with a destructive edge,” he says. That element to his work is further evidenced in Les Traversées, the live projections of toy vehicles being subjected to “earthquakes” caused by the vibration from a stereo music speaker. “I like mixing narratives with a more scientific approach,” he explains. Music plays an important role in Julien’s work – he studied at the Metz conservatory – and he is now incorporating the physical architecture of reproducing sound, such as turntables and Walkmans. He currently lives in Rotterdam after completing his masters at the Dutch Art Institute. “But I come back here quite often because I want to stay connected to the Greater Region.” Q
