t was an encounter with director/producer Pol Cruchten that kick started Govinda van Maele’s career. The young director had made a film as his final year project at the Waldorf School, and upon seeing it Pol immediately pledged to produce Govinda’s first film via his Red Lion company. “I was able to skip film school and really gain an education within the industry,” says Govinda. He worked on productions such as Perl oder Pica before finally getting to make his first short film proper. Teenage coming-of-age drama Josh went on to win prizes at international festivals. His latest film is a full-length documentary, what Govinda calls a “snapshot” of the state of the local music scene. “I grew up with people who make music, but most of them don’t get to earn a living from it. My friends who went into the film making have managed to make careers in that industry.” Q

’est une rencontre avec le réalisateur/producteur Pol Cruchten qui a lancé la carrière de Govinda van Maele. Le jeune cinéaste avait alors réalisé un film comme projet de fin d’études à l’école Waldorf. Pol Cruchten l’a vu et s’est immédiatement engagé à produire le premier film de Govinda via sa société Red Lion. « Je n’ai pas eu à passer par une école de cinéma, j’ai été formé au cœur même de l’industrie », explique Govinda. Il a travaillé sur des productions Red Lion comme Perl oder Pica (en tant qu’assistant de Pol) avant de pouvoir enfin réaliser son premier vrai court métrage Josh, un drame sur le passage à l’âge adulte qui a remporté de nombreux prix lors de festivals internationaux. Son dernier opus est un documentaire long métrage qu’il qualifie d’« instantané » de la scène musicale luxembourgeoise. « J’ai grandi avec des gens qui font de la musique, mais la plupart ne parviennent pas à en vivre. Mes amis qui se sont lancés dans le cinéma ont réussi à y faire carrière. » Q
