eryl Koltz first “dived into the universe” of the sauna when she decided to give up smoking. “I distinctly remember the feeling of lightness that came over me the first time I came face-to-face with a stark naked stranger as I turned the corner in a corridor… I finally grew accustomed to it and even began to appreciate this most natural form of co-habitation, even if our society is not yet really conditioned to accept it.” Beryl took that universe and turned it into one of her own vivid imagination for her debut feature film, Hot Hot Hot, which was released to critical acclaim last autumn. Set in a spa complex, the film is a beautiful homage to sauna culture. But it is also a love story in which Beryl’s protagonist, a cripplingly shy man named Ferdinand, really is a fish out of water in the sensual and nude environment she has imagined. Q

eryl Koltz « plongea dans l’univers » du sauna quand elle décida d’arrêter de fumer. « Je me souviens très bien du léger sursaut qui m’a traversée en me retrouvant nez à nez avec un parfait inconnu nu comme un ver au détour d’un couloir. Puis je m’y suis habituée et finalement, j’ai même apprécié cette forme de cohabitation dans le plus simple appareil parce qu’au fond, ça a quelque chose de naturel, même si notre société n’est pas vraiment conditionnée dans ce sens. » Beryl a transformé cet univers au gré de son imagination dans son premier long métrage. Hot Hot Hot est sorti cet automne sous les applaudissements de la critique. Tourné dans un complexe thermal, le film est un bel hommage à la culture du sauna. Mais c’est aussi une histoire d’amour dans laquelle Ferdinand, le héros à la timidité maladive, est comme un poisson hors de l’eau dans l’univers de nudité et de sensualité imaginé par Beryl. Q
