L
a réouverture de la galerie de la Villa Vauban en avril prochain marquera l’aboutissement d’un travail de six ans pour Philippe Schmit, qui a conçu sa nouvelle extension avec Diane Heirend. Soucieux du lien entre art et architecture, il espère que le bâtiment encouragera les visiteurs à découvrir la galerie : « Un bâtiment commence à vivre quand le travail de l’architecte est terminé. » Le projet a évolué naturellement, en conservant ce qu’il nomme un aspect domestique et modeste. « Je voulais mettre en avant le potentiel du site, souligner son histoire. Je ne voulais pas qu’il surgisse comme un ovni dans le parc », explique l’architecte. Surtout qu’il connaissait le contexte culturel ayant suivi le débat autour du Mudam et jugeait « très courageux » de la part de la ville de lancer ce projet. « Cela semblait bien improbable au début, mais j’y croyais car les personnes à l’initiative du projet étaient vraiment motivées. » Q

he re-opening of the Villa Vauban gallery next April will be the culmi nation of six years’ work for Philippe Schmit, who designed its new extension together with Diane Heirend. As someone with a pre-occupation with the link between art and architecture, he hopes the building will encourage visitors to discover the gallery. “A building starts to live when the architect’s work is finished,” he says. His design evolved quite naturally, retaining what he calls a humble domesticity. “I wanted to bring out the potential of the site, discover its history. I didn’t want it to be a UFO landing in the park.” Philippe explains. Importantly, he says, he knew the cultural context having followed the debate surrounding Mudam and thought it “very courageous” of the city to launch the project. “It seemed quite impro bable at first, but I believed in it because the people behind the project were truly motivated.” Q
