CEO ’ S N OTE

ollowing the celebration of Malindo Air’s 5th Anniversary end of last month, we are proud to note that the airline has made a significant mark to be a global brand in the travel industry with our rapid international growth and impeccable offerings that we provide to our customers thus this far. The last five years have been a meaningful journey for us as we also witnessed our due share of ups and downs within the company. The first two years were focused on establishing a brand name and image. Subsequently, in the next three years our efforts were driven more in maintaining the image and service we established, while expanding our network regionally. I must say the growth was rather rapid and encouraging given any Chandran Rama Muthy Chief Executive Officer Malindo Air

young airline. While we have made good progress, it does not just stop there. We are striving to continuously enhance our product in terms of expanding our destinations, services and affordability while acknowledging the main challenges that lie in the industry worldwide. The increase of fuel price and competitive ticket pricing continue to be our focus. However, constructive measures within the company’s ability are being constantly implemented to face these industry obstacles which is beyond our control. Rejoicing further in our celebratory spirit, is the launch of two new routes, last month as well. We are pleased to have successfully strengthen connections between Indonesia and Northern Malaysia, with the introduction of weekly flights between Pekan Baru, Indonesia and Penang, Malaysia

and also flights between Medan, Indonesia and Ipoh, Malaysia. Do furnish yourself with details of our news highlights in the Insider segment. In line with the latest fad of travel ideas that is influenced by social media technology, our cover story features emerging ‘Instagramed’ destinations to visit within our network. Do browse through some of the most picturesque places that have been drives in creating a traveller’s bucket list. As for our Voyage section, glide through a delicious trail of local cuisine to savour in Vietnam besides its splendid attractions. MALINDO AIR Launched Two New Routes Malindo Air launched two new routes. The first route is OD328 from Penang to Banda Aceh started 15 March 2018 and Ipoh to Medan from 16 March 2018. Malindo Air flight OD329 departs from Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport at 11.30am

and is scheduled to arrive Penang International Airport at 2.40pm. Chandran Rama Muthy, CEO of Malindo Air said that the continuous effort to strengthen the network and connectivity lead the airline to start flying from Penang to Banda Aceh. There is strong potential for trade and leisure travels and this new route is believed to foster stronger connection between these sectors alike. Passenger may also fly to Malacca and Hat Yai, Thailand with direct flights from Penang. Otherwise, there are more than 70 flights available weekly from Penang to our hubs in Kuala Lumpur. Banda Aceh is located on the northwestern tip of Indonesia at the mouth

On the other hand, Malindo Air will also resume its flight from Ipoh to Medan. Malindo Air flight OD330 is scheduled to depart from Sultan Azlan Shah Airport at 10.05am and arrive at Kualanamu International Airport at 10.45am (local time). Wings Air Now Expand Their Flight To Miri, Sarawak Wings Air, a sister company of Malindo Air, also under the Lion Air Group, expanded their flights to Miri, Sarawak from Pontianak. After successfully flown their fleet from Pontianak to Kuching, Sarawak in January 2018, now the airline provides flights with low fares to Miri. can feed the market on their unique products, be it leisure tourism, medical or education purposes. For this reason, Sarawak Tourism Board, continues to organise the Rainforest World Music Festival and the Borneo Jazz Festival in Kuching and Miri respectively to attract more Indonesian to visit. And now, with Wings Air, it is a direct flight to this part of the country. Wings Air will use their fleet ATR 72-600 which can accommodate 72 passengers. Songkran Festival, Thailand

The Songkran Festival is also known as the water festival. It celebrates water as a ritual of washing away negativity from the year before. People celebrating Songkran take part in a traditional pouring of water that symbolises washing away bad luck and sins from a person’s life. Some people add herbs to the ritual water, as well. As April is the hottest month of the year, the celebration of water is relevant on many levels of the festival. However, Songkran is not always celebrated in the same traditional manner. In big cities, the country takes to the streets. Cities like Bangkok see a host of street parties and water fights. Date : 13-15 April, 2018 Venue : All over Thailand

Vaisakhi Celebration, Amritsar, India

Vasakhi is a long established harvest festival in the Punjab. It had been celebrated long before it gained an added dimension for Sikhs. Vasakhi (also spelled Baisakhi) is the festival which celebrates the founding of the Sikh community known as the Khalsa. It is celebrated on April 14 every year. The harvest festival is also characterised by the folk dance, Bhangra which is traditionally a harvest dance. The Baisakhi fairs (melas) are organized all over Punjab, and are a festival highlight for many people. Locals dress up in their finest clothes, and sing and dance. There are races, wrestling bouts, acrobatics, and folk music. Numerous stalls take this opportunity to sell trinkets, handicrafts, and food. Cirque du Soleil’s KOOZA, Hong Kong

KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil: It combines two circus traditions - acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendour and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humour. The journey brings him into contact with a panoply of comic characters such as the King, the Trickster and the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog. Between strength and fragility, laughter and smiles, turmoil and harmony, KOOZA explores themes of fear, identity, recognition and power. ince the arrival of technology and social m e d i a , travellers’ journey has become very different than it used to be. Those travelling no longer rely on guidebooks compiled by ‘experts’ with former information or even paper maps to navigate their latest destination. Moreover, most consumers these days hardly decide on a destination, research what to do or where to stay, and then purchase the required tickets. Instead, their path to travel, both purchase and experience, has become spontaneous and inspired by influences and friends. Many turn to their influences within the expanding social media world to find travel and vacation inspiration, and even deals to support their newly discovered destination.

Faces of Bayon Instagram photo by @hodophiles

CAMBODIA Faces of Bayon One of the many faces seen in the Bayon Temple at the center of the city of Angkor Thom. Bayon is a Buddhist shrine with more than smiling, serene faces carved onto gigantic towers. The faces were carved to look like Jayavarman VII. Since the construction of the temple, several of these towers have toppled. Carved into the walls surrounding the temple are basreliefs, illustrating the life and times of the Khmer people. Ta Prohm Ta Prohm and Tomb Raider will be associated with each other for a long time as Angelina Jolie’s 2001 adventure flick brought a lot of attention to this temple that nature has beautifully swallowed. Built from 1186 and originally known as Rajavihara (Monastery of the King), Ta Prohm was a Buddhist temple dedicated to the mother of Jayavarman VII. It is one of the few temples in the Angkor region where an inscription provides information about the temple’s dependents and inhabitants. Tonle Sap Not far from the ancient temples of Angkor, in the heart of Cambodia, lies the huge Tonle Sap River, the largest in Southeast Asia. Tonle Sap is the largest fresh water lake in South East Asia. It gives food to more than 3 million people. Siem Reap is a perfect location to organise boat trips to villages and bird sanctuaries along the shores of the River, that at Prek Toal being the most famous one. Raja Ampat Islands

Raja Ampat Islands This group of about 1600 mostly uninhabited islands off Sorong has some of the best diving in the world. Little known until the last few years, Raja Ampat’s sheer numbers and diversity of marine life, and its huge, largely pristine coral-reef systems, are a scuba dream come true – and fantastic for snorkellers too. The four biggest islands are Waigeo (with the small but fast-growing regional capital, Waisai), Batanta, Salawati and Misool.

Mount Bromo, Java Located some 4 hours drive from Surabaya, the capital of East Java, Mount Bromo is a part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park that covers a massive area of 800 square kilometres. While it may be small when measured against other volcanoes in Indonesia, the magnificent Mt Bromo will not disappoint with its spectacular views and dramatic landscapes. At 2392 meters tall, Mt Bromo is not among the tallest of Indonesia’s mountains but its stunning beauty lies in its incredible setting. Sipiso-piso Waterfall Set in the beautiful highlands of North Sumatra, the stunning Sipiso-piso waterfall is located on the North side of Lake Toba, 24 kms from Kabanjahe. This long but narrow waterfall drops 120 meters into an impressive gorge below. This thundering waterfall is popular with visitors who come to photograph this magnificent natural wonder. Surrounded by a lush green mountain scape and with a rainbow forming at the base of the waterfall, it is hard to imagine a more impressive subject for a photograph.

he Tipsy Elephant is one of the newest ones to incite tourists heading to Central Delhi. Located in the old colonial era buildings that adorn the one of the largest markets in Delhi, The Tipsy Elephant is the perfect place to find yourself a tipple and food from all over the planet. The restaurant is perfect for lounging out with a gang of friends without burning a hole in your pocket. The lounge is adorned with elephant graffiti and an eyepopping bar which is huge in size and is a good sight for tipsy eyes. The lounge very much promises to keep you in a tipsy mood, enveloping the whole place in a soothing vibe with euphoric music, sumptuous food and striking interiors. A host of small bites will entice as you find your favourite tipple. These include a Kashundi Mustard Marinated Sole with a Crispy Thepla which acts as a crossover between the Eastern and Western parts of India. While the crispy wheat covering pays a tribute to the state of Gujarat, the spicy, tangy flavours of the Kashundi are typically Bengali. Chicken comes in all forms here as a Butter Chicken Satay, Tipsy Chicken Wings and Chicken Tikka with Paan chutney adorns the menu. Vegetarians need not fetter much as Cheesy Naan Tacos, Maggi Bruschetta and Wasabi Aloo Tikki are fusion dishes that will have you licking your fingers. Southeast Asia is full of flavours and Vietnamese cuisine is no exception! Championing the principles of yin and yang, especially in regards to the properties of ‘heating’ and ‘cooling’, Vietnamese cuisine is influenced by Asian principles including the philosophy of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water, which correspond with sour, bitter, sweet, spicy and salty flavours accordingly. While sharing many features, Vietnamese cuisine differs from region to region. Divided by Northern, Central, and Southern areas, foods in Northern Vietnam are often saltier and not as sweet or spicy. Central Vietnam is notable for turning up the heat with its splendid spicy creations, while Southern Vietnam is known for its use of fresh herbs, specifically basil. There is no mistaking French influence on Vietnamese cuisine, especially in baked goods, drinks and desserts. Franco-Vietnamese relations started as early as the 17th century with the arrival of Catholic missionaries and the 1887 Indochinese Union solidifying French influence in Vietnam for 70 years.

VOYAGE | PER HENTI AN ISLANDS , M ALAYSI A

Explore the Ins and Outs Of The Perhentian Islands are a small group of islands known for its rich corals and natural reservoir. It is located on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in Terengganu, which is not far from the Thai border. Perhentian means “stopping point” in the Malay language and the islands were named as such for being a stopping point for traders travelling to and from between Malaysia and Bangkok.

“Coral Bay is also a

popular stretch of beach on the island. It is famous for its rough sands and corals accessible through a short swim! You can opt to dive further out at sea or snorkel from shore to see some beautiful, live corals.” 24 | M ALIND OM AG | APR IL 2 018

The Islands Perhentian Islands is most famous for its 2 main islands; the big island (Pulau Perhentian Besar) and the small island (Pulau Perhentian Kecil). Both islands attract equal amounts of tourists but each a different type. Perhentian Besar attracts more families as it houses resorts that are more expensive while Perhentian Kecil attracts more backpackers or budgeted travellers with cheaper accommodation and a host of beach parties at night. Pulau Perhentian Besar There are many beaches; private and public, that are accessible by foot or a short swim away. It takes an average of 15-25 minutes to swim from most points to another. The island has long, fine sandy beaches that are smooth on the feet. Perfect for a stroll with the family. There is also a beach in front of Perhentian Island Resort that is accessible to anyone. You can climb on top the buoy to enjoy a breath-taking view of the island. If you want to save energy, water taxis are available for short and long distance travels too! Prices vary according to location and ranging from RM5-RM150 for a one-way trip.

VOYAGE | PER HENTI AN ISLANDS , M ALAYSI A

Pulau Perhentian Kecil Perhentian Kecil is the next main beach of the Perhentian Islands. The most popular beaches here are Long Beach and Coral Bay. Opposite these popular beaches is a trek through the jungle that is about 10 minutes distance. Coral Bay is also a popular stretch of beach on the island. It is famous for its rough sands and corals accessible through a short swim! You can opt to dive further out at sea or snorkel from shore to see some beautiful, live corals. Food is easily found along the beach once you have had your fix of the ocean. At night, party goers should head to Long Beach where there have many beach clubs with nice, fine sand to dance on. Party people can enjoy drinks and a lively atmosphere all along the beach.

Fisherman’s Village Island Five minutes away from Coral View Island Resort is Fisherman’s Village Island. It is a peaceful and rustic island where not much civilization has changed the place. It is a small village where most boatmen and fisherman live with their families. Here is also where kids of Perhentian Island go to school. The Fisherman’s Village Island is also a place to stock up on necessities as it is cheaper than the island resorts. Food stalls can be spotted around the village for some authentic local cuisine. This island is also the lunch spot for many snorkelling tours. Teluk KK Five minutes away from Fisherman’s Village island lies Teluk KK. Mornings are the best as there are no resorts along the beach allowing you to enjoy a secluded beach all to yourself. For nature lovers, camping grounds with toilets are also available here. The colourful fisherman’s jetty is also located here with schools of fish visible from the shore.

The atmosphere in an airplane cabin dries out a person’s nose, and the changing air pressure numbs about 1/3 of a person’s taste buds. This is one reason for airlines adding lots of spices and salt to their foods. Additionally, tomato juice tastes less acidic in the air.

Known for staring in TV shows such as Lafazkan Kalimah Cintamu, Encik Suami Mat Salih Celup, and Mr. Hijab, Singaporean actress and model Nadiyah Shahab took on the challenge to travel Southeast Asia without any trusty modern travel aids, no phones, no GSP, no maps! Host of GOASEAN’s Original Series, Lost at SEA, Nadiyah gets whisked away to different cities across the region including Bario, Phnom Penh, Makassar, and Yangon. Travelling like it’s 1949, Nadiyah is guided by mysterious messages in bottles and challenged to solve riddles within 24 hours to continue her journey. When asked what’s the most rewarding part about hosting Lost at SEA, Nadiyah explained, “I’ve never hosted a travel show before, so the entire experience was really special and I learnt so much. I think the most rewarding part is definitely getting to meet people.” She added, “Also, moments when I climb a mountain for two and half hours and finally reach a breathtaking view on top. That’s incredibly rewarding –those moments are going to stick with me for years.” Nadiyah expressed it’s not all fun and games, “Every day we were up at 2:00am34 | M ALIND OM AG | APR IL 2 018

3:00am to catch the sunrise at 6:00am and we only wrapped up shooting at midnight.” “I’ve never been so tired before. It was the kind of tired where I just wanted to fall asleep at the hotel room door. Not the bed, the door!” she joked. Nadiyah reminisced, “The most memorable moment was when I was adopted into a long house family in Bario, Sarawak. They had a naming ceremony for me which they don’t normally do for ‘outsiders’.” She shared, “The head of every household and other community members showed up to the ceremony. There was singing, dancing, some hymns and ritual songs and it was really nice. I’m still in contact with the family today and I plan to go back to visit.” Often travelling for work and pleasure, Nadiyah gushed, “Malindo is amazing, it’s one of my favourite airlines. Since I often carry a lot of luggage with me, I normally choose Malindo over other airlines because of their baggage allowance.” Nadiyah detailed, “Malindo’s service is great, there’s more leg room, and there’s inflight entertainment too. I also like the muffins and juices served in the mornings. Once, I got ice-cream and chocolate balls –that was awesome!” Lost at SEA and other GOASEAN Original Series are coming soon on Outdoor Channel (Asia)!

PAS SIO N

C H R I S TO P H E R C H I N : FITNESS BUFF

Like many people who start living the “healthy lifestyle”, I quickly became the goto fitness guy, a position and responsibility I learned to enjoy and cherish.

The health and fitness industry has been Christopher Chin’s passion since he was a teenager who could not sit still. Growing up in Perth, Australia, he has always been very active and interested in outdoor activities. He caught the fitness bug during his time at university. Always having an interest in team sports such as basketball, Chris decided that he would also get stronger and fitter for his better self. “I started working out and reading articles about nutrition and fitness around the age of 19. By the time I was 21, I had put on 10kg of muscle and felt awesome,” said Chris. “Like many people who start living the “healthy lifestyle”, I quickly became the go-to fitness guy, a position and responsibility I learned to enjoy and cherish. I started training all my friends, even a group of elderlies. “My new-found love for exercising and eating healthy—coupled with the results I saw in the mirror and my ability to help others get in shape—made me feel like a brand new person. Chris decided to take his passion for personal training further. After graduating, he enrolled in a Personal Training course turning his interest into a career. He even went on to establishing his own gym at Perth Cental Business District called Adrenaline Vault. He is now able to dedicate his time into training the local community and helping those who want to become a stronger and healthier version of themselves. “I am excited to constantly share all of the things I have learned on my own fitness journey. Overall, seeing people overcome their own challenges, enjoying fitness and getting stronger is the most rewarding part as a gym owner. Our future plans include promoting greater awareness of fitness and to build a fun and exciting community,” added Chris.
