arch has always been a special month for us, as we celebrate the inception of Malindo Air’s operation, from its humble beginnings to today, wherein we are servicing 55 destinations in over 17 countries. The journey has been nothing short of excitement and challenges. Looking back to the beginning, the visions are now materialising and that has been the most rewarding part of our efforts. We have watched it grow from a mere two aircraft to a fleet of 42 aircraft and still more to come. As we continue to expand our routes, we are also hoping to bring in more international traffic to Malaysia, to support the local tourism industry and airport arrivals. On the topic of expansion, we are now expanding our service to Hokkaido, Japan. Our cover story highlights the many attractions of this Land of the Rising Sun. The city is renowned for its picturesque volcanoes, natural hot springs and amazing

ski resorts. Meanwhile our Voyage segment is on Tianjin in China. The modern metropolis has recently garnered attention of tourists to visit its many fascinating attractions. Natural resorts, historic sites and modern architectures are some of the charms one can spend a leisure time by losing oneself in this beautiful city. The other Voyage segment takes you to Taiwan. It is not just the capital city that holds the appeal but beyond Taipei. The story takes you to other states in Taiwan where there are vast number of attractions to experience. This month also calls for another point of celebration as we honour women around the world in conjunction with International Women’s Day. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt respect to my fellow female colleagues who successfully strike up a balance between a career and managing a home. Till then, have a wonderful journey flying with us and happy reading.

The programme is a deeply restorative, soothing and relaxing treatment that
improves quality of sleep and recovery through a combination of traditional holistic elements, combined with the latest technology. It starts with the Sleep Therapist welcoming and preparing the guest with a gentle floral foot cleansing ritual and sets the Glyph headset or headphones with gentle tones to induce relaxation of the senses and slow the breathing rate. Relaxation is further enhanced with the addition of rolling magnesium oil on the ten key pulse points of the body. A five-minute Reiki treatment is conducted on the seven spiritual power points, finishing with the head with chakra oil drops being applied to each of the 7 chakra points. The ritual continues with a massage starting on the left foot at 50% pressure in a very slow rhythm to match the guest’s breathing pattern. Sleep by Design oil is used in conjunction with specific pressure point massage. This is followed by a Chi Ne Tsang abdominal massage, after which the initial technique on the legs, continues upwards in an unbroken motion on both arms. Shoulder points are massaged both front and back followed by facial and ear pressure point work, culminating in a scalp. Malindo Air’s Latest In-Flight Services Malindo Air has refined their in-flight services to better accommodate the needs of their passengers. A wider range of snacks and beverages are now available for purchase onboard its Boeing fleet. These include hot beverages such as coffee and tea, mango and orange juice, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. These items are offered at a reasonable price for the economy class passengers who wish to have other options of snacks and drinks, on top of the complimentary hot meal or hot snack and drinking water provided. For example, passengers flying with kids would now have the options to purchase their favourites to further enjoy their journey. Also with the wide variety of in-flight entertainment on most of our Boeing fleet, a pack of potato chips and a piping hot

KAIDO Japan Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost island and the country’s snowiest region. Known for its volcanoes, natural hot springs and ski resorts, Hokkaido offers a perfect winter holiday destination. With agriculture as one of its main economic pillars, exceptional food with the freshest produce is one of its biggest attractions. Aside from delectable food, there is also plenty to do all year round. For those who love the cold, there is no shortage of snow in the winter and numerous activities to match it, including some of the best ski slopes in the world. But if you prefer warmer weather, Hokkaido is heavenly in the summer, where it can get a bit humid, with mild climate and colourful vegetation that you thought only existed in fairy tales. Nature lovers will also find the island particularly appealing, given that it has six national parks to explore, all boasting
breathtaking scenery. As the second largest island in Japan, Hokkaido is a great place for travellers to explore the magnificence of nature and the beauty through the season changing. Hokkaido is filled with things to enjoy and see, and the city of Sapporo is in its center. In Sapporo, one can stroll through Susukino, the largest entertainment district on the island, and take in the beautiful views at night. Go on day trip from Sapporo to Otaru, where you explore the historical town via canal cruise. Hakodate is yet another ideal destination, known for its gourmet seafood, along with the star-shaped fortress, Goryokaku Tower. There is also Niseko for sports enthusiasts. After a day of winter activities in the powdery snow, soak in the onsen (hot springs) and rest your tired muscles.
In central Hokkaido is Furano, famous for its lavender fields. Travellers will come across all kinds of flowers here, starting with the purple lavender blooming in July. In the Tokachi and Obiro region, savour fresh and creamy milk, cheese, and dairy. Tourists who are planning to spend time outdoors should head to the east. During the warmer months in Shiretoko, there are brown bears and whale watching, and in winter visitors can trek down Abashiri frozen in ice. Tourist can also enjoy hiking to their heart’s content at Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, with its abundant nature. Hokkaido is framed by three seas: the Japan Sea, the Pacific Ocean, and the Okhotsk Sea. However, beyond its beautiful coastline and deeper inland, Hokkaido offers breathtaking nature, with quaint towns and cool festivals to boot.

Blue Pond This man-made basin in Biei is shockingly blue and the wispy trees that stick out from it make it even more captivating. Along with the Furano district, Biei is a popular area that is a member of The Association of The Most Beautiful Villages in Japan. The town has many tourist spots such as magnificent Mt. Tokachi which have been blessed by nature. Ningle Terrace A shopping area whose log houses produce a warm atmosphere. Located in the forest of the New Furano Prince Hotel, it is an area where you can enjoy shopping in the middle of nature. Its craft shops and cafes have become famous, that it has been used for filming on TV. If you walk slowly around the walking path of Ningle Terrace it takes about 15 minutes per lap. It is a lovely path, surrounded by trees, wild birds and squirrels. Every shop handles only handmade works that made in the Furano area. While conditions are not guaranteed (it is nature, after all), you will at the very least have incredible views of the Hidaka Mountains. Odori Park With flower beds and grass prettily arranged, this is a park which beautifully adorns the landscape of Sapporo. A park in the city where you can catch your breath, Odori Park continues for 1.5 km in the center of Sapporo. The lush green park matches well with TV Tower and the central city streets, and it plays a role as a place of respite for the many people coming and going. Selected as one of The Top 100 Cityscapes, Odori Park has contributed to the increase in greenery within Sapporo. Seafood Thanks to the plankton-rich Sea of Japan, seafood is highly abundant in the waters surrounding Hokkaido. The highquality crabs are especially worth a try. There are four types to choose from: king, horsehair, snow, and Hanasaki queen. And given how ubiquitous they are, feasting on these crustaceans is much more inexpensive here than anywhere else in the country. If you are not a fan or get tired of cracking your way through those spiny legs, sea urchin, squid, scallop, and salmon are also plentiful in the area. That rounds up some of the top attractions for visiting Hokkaido. Aside from Hokkaido’s infamous white season, when you can look forward to skiing, snowmobiling, walking on drift ice, and riding an icebreaker ships, the summer season offers its fair share of equally enthralling activities.

When visiting Tianjin, the usual items to tick off the bucket list include the Five Great Avenues district, the Tianjin Eye, and the Ancient Culture Street, where you will be whisked back in time. But what about the lesser known hidden gems? Explore the unusual side of Tianjin with this selection of eccentric and underrated things to do.

Tianjin makeover, with halal restaurants at every corner and vegan options readily available on every menu. Halal street food is also common, from meat to porridge and desserts. Simply look out for the words “清真”. If you are staying clear of meat, just practice a sentence or two of key phrases, and you should be all good. The standard strategy is to get the gist of the message across with the Chinese phrase wo chi su (literally “I eat vegetables”). Tip: Head down to Nanshi Food Street and try your hand at finding Tianjin’s three famous delicacies -- fried dough twists named Mahua, Goubuli steamed stuffed buns and the oddly named Ear-Hole Fried Cake. Visit the Great Wall of China without the hustle and bustle There are many points you can access the wall from -- the most popular being the Beijing entrance, while the least popular is the Tianjin entrance. Called the Huangyaguan Pass, it is not for your average tourist. At times, it is as rough as it is steep, and not recommended for small children. A day trip, it is shockingly quiet. This is another reason why Tianjin is special -despite being the fourth largest city in China, it is still undiscovered by tourists and large tour groups.

Although technically a museum, unless you come as part of a tour group, you are
unlikely to keep up with the history of the place. However, when it is as magnificent as this, you will probably be more focused on taking in the work that went into creating this building and trying to take pictures that justify its beauty. Indulge in authentic Chinese cuisine If you are not the most daring with your food choices, Tianjin is the perfect destination, with fresh local cuisine and a massive choice of dishes at every single restaurant. Do not be surprised to see deer and wild fish on the menus, alongside your staple Peking duck and dumplings. Prepare to have your taste buds blown by how incredible, affordable and authentic the Chinese food is in Tianjin. Even regular vegetables are given a

Tianjin City
It is a 1.5-to-2-hour drive from downtown Tianjin, so it is best to start your journey at 7:30 am when the wall opens (have breakfast in the car to save time). Make sure you are properly equipped for a real trek the night before. This includes your gear: sporting shoes, sunscreen, extra clothing (it gets quite windy), a few bottles of water and snacks. Be extra careful, this is going to be a tough climb but the views at the top are nothing short of breath-taking. Tip: At the bottom of the wall are merchants selling dried fruit and nuts. They are keen to give out free tasters, so give them all a try. Experience Chinese culture at Dabei Monastery Residents of Tianjin are unbelievably friendly and helpful. Although only a handful speak English, if you have a destination written in Mandarin they will be beyond happy to point you in the right direction, frequently followed by the emergence of a selfie stick. Take it all in your stride and get your poses ready. From the culture street to Tianjin Old Town, you can get a small insight into the practises and norms of thousands of everyday people, especially at the Dabei Buddhist Monastery. Locals queue just to get a chance to rub the healing pot, and then rub their hands over the parts of their body they would like to heal. First built in the Ming Dynasty, Dabei is the oldest and largest monastery in town, over 114,000 square feet in size.

“Residents of Tianjin are unbelievably friendly and helpful. Although only a handful speak English. Be awestruck by books and architecture at Tianjin Binhai Library The Tianjin Binhai Library is a breathtaking work of modern architecture which aims to inspire enjoyment of the arts. The unique design of the five-level 33,700-meter square building creates an eye when viewed from the outside. The contours inside create a shell holding a pearl at its centre. This shell is made up of
terraced layers of bookshelves, stacked on top of each other in curves that reach from the ground floor all the way to the ceiling. The iris or pearl at the centre is an auditorium, and the steps of the library do double-duty as seats for reading, contemplation and socialising. Inside the building, around the eye, there are also educational facilities, subterranean service spaces, book storage, and a large archive. All told, it has the capacity to hold more than 1.35 million books.

BeyondTaipei
By Emily Lowe
Taipei 101, once the world’s tallest building, is naturally what comes to mind at the mere mention of Taiwan. However, the country is so much more than this iconic skyscraper of 101 floors. Taiwan is dominated by rugged mountain ranges on a good two thirds of the island country, parallel to the east coast. Therefore, the rolling plains in the south-west are where most of the population live. Indeed, Taiwan, or officially the Republic of China, has a lot to offer tourists, beyond Taipei, which is located in the north of the island.
The centre of Hakka culture
About 90 minutes’ drive south-west from Taipei is Beipu, a rural township in Hsinchu County. Known as the centre of Hakka culture as the majority of the people are of Hakka descent, take a step back in time by visiting the well-preserved Hakka village, with faded red lanterns hanging above doorways to greet visitors. Many storekeepers here are able to converse in Hakka, and this ability is indicated in a sticker at the door. Popular items to get here include Hakka Lei-cha and Oolong tea.
700 metres above sea level
Drive approximately a further 60 kilometres south through bumpy and winding roads to arrive at Mile High Leisure Farm in Miaoli County, atop Guandaoshan, to participate in farming activities and partake in scrumptious Hakka cuisine. Different crops are available for picking, depending on season and

weather. Some of the common ones are ginger, strawberry, peach, plum, passion fruit, pumpkin and vegetables.
Malindo Air flies to TAIPEI 7x weekly.
A Hakka village up on the mountains
While Mile High Leisure Farm provides bed-and-breakfast as well as camping-style accommodation, you may choose to spend the night high up on the mountains in a rustic Hakka-style inn amidst lush gardens and fish ponds at the nearby Zhuo Ye Cottage in Sanyi Township, also in Miaoli. Quirky huts with inspiring sleeping lofts offer guests a memorable stay as they take delight in the freshest of air. They can also sign up for indigo dye workshops during their time here to learn the techniques of tie-dying, using indigo dye produced from the farm itself.
Educational tours
It is actually interesting to note how family businesses and cottage industries such as Mile High and Zhuo Ye have been turned into successful tourism products. Over at the coastal town of Lukang, about an hour’s drive south-west, a good number of manufacturing plants in this industrial zone on reclaimed land have also opened their doors to visitors to have a look at how their products are made. Brand’s Health Museum is a major attraction in this area, as it is an international household name in nourishing concoctions for general wellness. Its neighbouring Ribbon Museum is the first ribbon museum in Asia, housing a collection of fifty thousand kinds of ribbons,

thirty thousand patterns of printed ribbon, twenty thousand patterns of woven ribbon, as well as a hundred types of ribbon yarns. Another highlight within the vicinity is the Taiwan Glass Gallery, particularly its Golden Tunnel and Underwater World. Also noteworthy is the glass Mazu temple. Said to be the only such structure in the world, the building is made with entire sheets of glass except its pillars. This temple is an engineering feat, no less. What a sight to behold, especially at night when the lights are turned on.
Lukang’s historic district
Lukang in Changhua County is the second oldest town in Taiwan. It is famed for its culture and heritage that have been wellpreserved through the generations. A pride of this town is its historic district, where red brick buildings with traditional Taiwanese architecture still stand firmly. The ideal way to take in the sights and sounds of Lukang is by going on a walking tour, with Lungshan Temple as starting point. From there, stroll over to the narrowest of narrow Mo Ru Lane, followed by Lukang historic district, where century-old flavours of Cheng Yu Chen (since 1887) await. From these traditional biscuits to the fashionable pudding of Simple Delicious Workshop, from classic street food fare of fried oyster omelette and large intestines rice vermicelli to hipster cafés, the saying that one can get to know a place well through its food holds true in Lukang.
Oyster harvesting
Lukang actually means “Deer harbour”, a name adopted for its primary business of exporting deerskin during the Dutch Colonial period (1624 to 1662). Due to the geographical location of this port town by
Hakka village in Beipu, Hsinchu County.
the coast, seafood features prominently in the diet of locals. Oyster is a common food here, so for a tourist to Changhua, one of the best experiences to have is oyster harvesting in Fangyuan. Be taken on a motorised cart to the shore of the Taiwan Strait during low tide for a crash course on oyster harvesting and participate hands-on in this local cultural heritage. For all your “hard work”, you are more than welcome to feast on fresh oysters grilled over charcoal fire, on-site, as a reward for your labour.
Taiwan’s oldest city
After the back-breaking work of oyster harvesting, it is time for a good night’s rest. Take a short trip to Tainan, the country’s oldest city, just 1.5 hours’ drive south. Spending the night in Tainan would put one
on a good footing to sample local delicacies offered by street hawkers at Yongle Market at the crack of dawn. After all, many well-known Taiwanese dishes originated from Tainan. Stretching the length of Guohua St. Section 3, the top four food picks are: spring rolls, rice cakes, meat mantou and calamari rice vermicelli. To give your breakfast a further touch of traditional flavour, wash it down with a cup of Taiwanese black tea. Tainan is well-connected by public transport, and is in fact, a major stop on the Taipei - Kaohsiung High Speed Rail line, giving Tainan easy access to all major cities on the East Coast. From here, you are free to explore further, or reserve it for another visit. After all, the food, culture and warm hospitality of Taiwanese people are definitely something to enjoy again and again.

Best of Asia Village in New Delhi By Sudipto De
Malindo Air flies to NEW DELHI 11x weekly.
Asian food has always been a favourite globally, so when Best of Asia Village opened in New Delhi with the whole family of Asian cuisines on its menu, it was a spectacular dining opportunity. The menu features food from China, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia and even rare ones like Cambodian and Korean. Served along with a Bar menu that involves quite a few interesting options, Best of Asia is definitely one restaurant you must head to when visiting Delhi. The restaurant has been divided into three distinct levels. The first level known as Diqui (Earth) is a fine-dining restaurant which has an imposing Buddha face at its entrance flanked by two Kylins. The walls on the other hand, come alive with murals from Angkor Wat. The five elements of the Chinese philosophy are represented by placing a small waterfall along with lit candles all over the space. Two immense statues dominate the centre space finally converging onto an elegant staircase that opens onto the second floor known as Tiakong (Sky). A casual dining space, Tiakong offers
you enough space to relax along with your friends. While the skylight looks like a dreamy extravaganza, especially at night with the Origami birds shining bright against the night sky, another flight of stairs curbs past the bar to Tian (Heaven). Surrounded by plants and a view into the restaurant below, this party space makes for a wonderful area. The extensive menu starts with Khao Suey from Burma before moving to some delectable Sushi and dim sums that impresses us quite a bit with its range of flavours. There is some Sriracha Chicken and a host of Thai curries that you must try out with the Jasmine Rice. The dessert menu does not get left behind. It features chocolate dumplings and also some chocolate Sushi along with some date pancakes. Slurp it all down with some signature cocktails including the Chaska Maska and Somras. Do head to the BOA Village for the best of South East Asian flavours all under one roof. Location: BOA(Best of Asia) Village at 1st Exchange Store Building 13 Civil Lines, New Delhi

Health Benefits of Palm Oil
Palm oil is more than just about its goodness and rich source of tocotrienols There are other substances in the vegetable oil which also lend a lot of health benefits. Plants contain unique substances, called phytonutrients, which are believed to provide health benefits to us, such as protection from certain diseases while boosting our heart health. Research has uncovered a considerable amount of phytonutrients in palm oil. In a review paper co-authored by Professor Dr Ammu K Radhakrishnan, published in the Malaysian Journal of Nutrition in 2010, it is stated that palm oil contains the following phytonutrients. Crude palm oil is said to be one of the richest natural plant sources of 13 different types of carotenoids, the substances that give palm oil its orangereddish colour. Red palm oil is a rich source of phytonutrients - α- (alpha), β- (beta) and γ- (gamma) carotenoids are converted into vitamin A in the body. Beta carotene can prevent LDL cholesterol – the bad cholesterol – from being oxidised, which, increases the risk of coronary heart disease. Research increasingly suggests that some carotenes may protect from certain cancers, such as breast cancer. Apart from carotene, palm oil is also a rich source of phytonutrients such as phytosterols which are well-known for their ability to help lower the cholesterol levels in our body. They are frequently added to foods traditionally known to be high in fats (such as margarine and butter) to reduce the total cholesterol and
“Reducing cholesterol levels and providing a boost to heart health” bad cholesterol content. Squalene, the substance mostly found in shark liver oil, can also be obtained from plant sources including palm oil. It not only helps to inhibit cholesterol production, thus reducing cholesterol levels and providing a boost to heart health and also helps reduce the risk of certain cancers, such as skin cancer. Phytonutrients found present in small portions in palm oil are phospholipids, coenzyme Q10 and polyphenolics. Phospholipids promote and support
better nerve function, improve memory and brain function as we age. They can be useful to pregnant women, to help support the memory and brain development of the baby. Coenzyme Q10 boosts energy production by the body and protects from cell damage caused by free radicals and other by products of metabolism. Polyphenolics inhibits oxidation of bad cholesterol, thus promoting better heart health. It also protects from cancers such as prostate and breast cancer.
