H

appy New Year! Hope everyone ushered in 2019 with great spirits. I personally am geared to start the year with some new resolutions and roll out impending plans for this year. As the company grew leap and bounds since its inception, we have achieved some amazing milestones to be proud of. Keeping up the momentum for this year is to take the airline to greater heights with pleasing services and also to expand our network simultaneously. With the vision of making an internal hub in East Malaysia gradually, two destinations were introduced subsequent to the other most recently. One being between two capital cities, which is Kota Kinabalu of Sabah and Kuching of Sarawak and the other route

within Sabah, which is between Kota Kinabalu and Tawau, These routes are designed to provide better connectivity with competitive rates and flight timing options, wherein its foreseen to cater both, for the business and leisure market. Following our expansion plan, we have kick start this new year with the launch of a new destination in China. Starting 10 January, we will be flying to Chongqing. The Voyage section on this issue will give you a better insight on what the unconventional but enthralling city has to offer. As the travel industry keeps growing exponentially, tourism is taking centrestage in equipping travelers with more options at respective destinations. As each destination has its own charm and attractions, this year, we have suggested some remarkable destinations to look out for on our cover feature. With our eye on making a significant mark in East Malaysia, our other Voyage

section will take you on a virtual journey to Sabah. This state being renowned for many aspects from its delicious seafood to the pristine beaches and mountain, has got much to offer than one could imagine. One eccentric way to learn and appreciate this destination in-depth is to volunteer in one of the many conservation projects in which simultaneously gives one the opportunity to enjoy the major iconic attractions in Sabah. On the note of improving our services, we have added extra features to our current mobile application to further enhance our customers’ experience. Besides that, we have also introduced web check-in system called DXCI (Digital Experience Check-In). Passengers can now look forward to seamless check-in with the new and simplified web checkin flow on the web browser. Until our next issue, here is wishing you a great start to a gratifying year ahead.

School Of Rock- Musical, Melbourne

Mamma Mia –The Musical, Hong Kong

Andrew Lloyd Webber, the man who brought rock and romance to Broadway, is back with a new heart-stirring hit, School of Rock. Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within.

The international smash-hit Mamma Mia returns to Hong Kong. The production weaves the story-telling magic of ABBA’s greatest hits such as Dancing Queen, Super Trouper and Money, Money, Money into a tale of love, laughter and friendship. The musical is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the storytelling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs with an enchanting tale of family and friendship unfolding on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father, brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

Singapore Art Week 2019

Thaipusam, Malaysia

Singapore Art Week (SAW) comes to life and transform the entire country into a city-wide celebration of art. Themed Art Takes Over, SAW runs for nine exciting days come the new year, where various artists, institutions and collectives come together to bring art to a wider audience through a series of compelling art experiences. For SAW2019, members of the public can not only expect the signature art fairs, gallery openings, exhibitions, public art and lifestyle events, but also art offerings that take on completely new forms, inspired by both tradition and technology as familiar public spaces come alive in a new light.

Thaipusam is the biggest festival for Hindus after Deepavali. It is observed as a day of thanksgiving and paying penance for Lord Murugan. Devotees prepare themselves for the occasion by cleansing their bodies through fasting and abstinence, and usually observe a vegetarian diet for a certain period of time. Many devotees began paying penance a few days before the actual festival, with the carrying of the kavadi (a decorated structure bearing the image of several deities including Lord Murugan) on their shoulders and milk pots carried above their heads. An occasion not to be missed.

Miri, Sarawak of MALAYSIA Discover the Blue Tears phenomenon, a stunning sight of glowing ocean waters in Tusan Beach, Miri. Be amazed with this natural phenomenon that turns seawaters into an electric neon blue as it washes up on beach. Blue Tears occurs when a certain algae called dinoflagellates is disturbed by motion. The phenomenon caused by the algae then produces a stunning glowing blue light that can be observed for miles. One can enjoy watching the water being illuminated by bright blue lights, almost as if the waves have been adorned with fairy lights. With each crashing wave, the algaes would secrete the blue light, illmunating the beach by night. Tusan Beach boasts a long white sandy beach with a gentle slope and is a secret paradise for those who love beautiful sunset scenery and of course, the dozens of fossils and seashells lying across the coastal line, which shell collectors find hard to resist. Discover the unique coastal and rock formations at the beach and take some great photos as you wait the darkness to fall. SRI LANKA Sri Lanka is becoming a major tourist destination with a steady hike of visitors pouring into the island. Sri Lanka is becoming the next sailing destination in Asia and a magnet for yachters and pleasure sailors worldwide. The South and South-West of Sri Lanka with its golden sand beaches and its coconut fringed coast, has an undoubted tropical charm. The popular beaches of Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama, Tallala, Mawella and Hiriketiya to name a few are stretched on several hundreds of kilometers. The coastline is dotted with trendy beach resorts, cafes, bars and a relaxed nightlife. The port city of Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in south and South East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and south Asian traditions. The Galle Fort is a world heritage site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European invaders. The East Coast of Sri Lanka on the other hand, offers endless pristine beaches, beautiful coves surrounded by lush vegetation and fascinating marine life, including whales and dolphins and an array of tropical fish and colorful reefs. Pigeon Island Marine National Park, the natural harbor of Trincomalee and the famous Swami Rock are just some of the highlights that make Sri Lanka’s East Coast an unique holiday destination.

XI’AN, CHINA Xi’an is home to the most impressive underground attraction in China: the Terracotta Warriors. Every year, millions of travellers fly to the former capital just to set eyes on the subterranean army, which was painstakingly fashioned from clay more than 2,000 years ago. Xi’an has a population of 10 million and is considered China’s cultural heart. Its crenulated Ming Dynasty wall stretches for 14 kilometres around the old city and its Bell and Drum towers are significant draw cards for tourists. This UNESCO World Heritage site displays more than 8,000 terracotta warriors, horses, and around 10,000 bronze weapons. These warriors were made as part of the funerary goods for Qin Shi Huang, first emperor of the Qin Dynasty. The human-size figures are said to be models of Qing’s real-life army. Just like the Statue of Liberty in New York, or the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is the most symbolic structure in Xi’an. The seven-story, 64-meter pagoda was built 1,300 years ago when Xi’an was the capital of the prosperous Tang Dynasty. The top of the pagoda provides a grand view of the old town whereby busy roads stretch out neatly like the grid on a chessboard, lined by a mix of ancient architecture and modern high-rises. PAKISTAN The Deosai Plateau, known as the highest plateau in the world is located at the border of Karakoram and the western Himalayas. It is a beautiful summer pasture with greenery and countless species of fauna & flora. The view of the Karakorum Range from the top of the 4,785 meter is legendary. This plateau is the habitat of the greatly threatened Himalayan Brown Bear and many other wild animals. Meanwhile the Deosai National Park expands over a great area of 3,000 square kilometers. It is located at an average elevation of 13,500 ft. from the seal level. Deosai Plains are referred to as ‘Summer Place’ because the whole area can only be accessed in summers. The reason behind it is the high altitude of the plateau that makes it quite cold in winters and the whole area is covered in snow. The spring season brings a lot of colors to the green plains. Flowers of different colors and kinds glow beautifully through grasslands to enhance the natural charm of the land. The colourful petals of these flowers attract a lot of butterflies as well. Standing upon lush green land of the national park, one can view a very clear and closer view of dense clouds shadowing the ground at a height of few hundred feet. Deosai is also blessed with breathtaking streams and one major lake. The lake is known as Sheosar Lake which depicts the best picture of nature in one place. Sheosar Lake is a fresh water lake made up from the snow that has melted in the Deosai Plains. One of the important aspects of this crystal water lake is that it is cupped into the plain land and there is no inward or outward stream. The beautiful sight around the lake seems just like heaven since the fresh blue water and lush green plains enhance the charm of the landscape. If the tourists visit the lake in the early summers, they can find a lovely view of snowcapped mountains in the backdrop.

BAGAN, MYANMAR Bagan in central Burma is one of the world’s greatest archeological sites, a sight to rival Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat. Rising from the plain’s canopy of green are temples, thousands of them were built by the kings of Bagan between 1057 and 1287, when their kingdom was swept away by earthquakes and Kublai Khan and his invading Mongols. Some 2,230 of an original 4,450 temples survive, a legacy of the Buddhist belief that to build a temple was to earn merit. Most are superbly preserved or have been restored by Unesco, among others, and many contain frescoes and carvings and statues of Buddha, big and small. Only a handful are regularly visited, and though tourist numbers are increasing and the hawkers are beginning to appear, this is still, by the standards of sites of a similar beauty and stature, a gloriously unsullied destination. At sunrise and sunset, the landscape of Bagan is unmissable. Perch yourself atop a lonely temple and watch nature’s best performance over one of the most incredible landscapes in the world. PERTH, AUSTRALIA The ancient desert sculptures of the Pinnacles, sits in Nambung National Park, along an idyllic stretch of coastline, north of Perth. It is a true desert landscape where the weathered rock spires of the Pinnacles rise out of yellow sand dunes. Yet the park sits on the deep blue Indian Ocean, along an idyllic stretch of coast north of Perth. After experiencing the Pinnacles, tourist can stay in the fishing village of Cervantes, with its white beaches, coral reefs and Lake Thetis, a salt lake teeming with living fossils. Once arrived, take a scenic walk or drive past the ancient limestone pillars of the Pinnacles, some several metres tall. They are scattered across the desert in their thousands, looking a bit like alien landscape. Some are as high as three and half metres, and some finish in a jagged point, while others have rounded domes, resembling tombstones. Made up of shells, the Pinnacles date back millions of years to an epoch when the sand was beneath the sea. Further north, along the Indian Ocean Drive is Jurien Bay, surrounded by the pristine beaches of Sandy Cape Recreational Park and Lesueur National Park, home to hundreds of plant and bird species. Jurien Bay is the place to feast on freshly-caught rock lobster, spot migrating whales between June and October and snorkel or dive the limestone reefs and caves. Get your calendar out and start planning your dream vacation for this year.

Travel With Purpose

Sabah is part of tropical Borneo island that belongs to three different countries and is absolutely flourishing with wildlife. Like a melting pot of colours, cultures and cuisines, Sabah offers an exhilarating mix of bustling cities, quaint villages, lush rainforests and beautiful islands. But what many tourists do not see is how it also makes the perfect destination for voluntourism - the wonderful marriage of volunteering and tourism. Voluntourism, like most other forms of leisurely travel, is a paid activity. You pay for your food and accommodation, for the unique experience and for the passionate people who are employed to run the project and guide you. Well-managed voluntourism can also provide much needed financial assistance to NGO’s and privately operated conservation and community projects. Here are a few exciting local projects that will appeal to your adventurous and generous soul: THE GREAT ORANGUTAN AND PYGMY ELEPHANT PROJECT Explore Borneo’s lush rainforest in search of wild orangutan and the rare pygmy elephant. Based in the Lower Kinabatangan Floodplain Rainforest, this orangutan project completely encompasses the awe-inspiring diversity of Borneo’s wildlife, earning the title of perhaps the most ‘wild’ project of all. This project is located within the WWF’s protected ‘Corridor of Life’, a region of enormous importance in sustaining its wildlife populations. Deforestation has tragically destroyed much of Borneo’s rainforests, taking countless animal lives in its wake with the remaining animals being left vulnerable. Today, local communities and volunteers work in tandem to revive the rainforest, planting thousands of trees per year and breathing life back in to the area. In recent times, 18 | M ALIND OM AG | JANUARY 2 019

If you love volunteering and travelling, especially to places that are off the beaten path, then volunteering in Sabah is an excellent opportunity to experience what it is like to live and help out in a completely different part of the world. By Zeenee Coogan

these efforts have proven to be successful, with visibility of both orangutans and pygmy elephants improving over time, but more must be done to allow these species – and others – to thrive in their endemic homes. On this project, you will become a guest in the small village of Sukau, living amongst the charming ‘Orang Sungai’ (‘People of the River’) and learning their way of life. This rural, indigenous community has a population of only 1000 or so, yet they are always keen to welcome guests. In return for their hospitality, you will assist in educating the locals on the importance of conservation and implementing more sustainable ways of living in a way which will be mutually beneficial to both the people and the animals in the area. The main focus of this project entails the monitoring of wildlife species along the Kinabatangan river, and as a volunteer you will embark on river-cruises and rainforest treks in search of wild orangutans, pygmy elephants and more. With gibbons, hornbills, and other species frequently spotted in the area, the ‘Corridor of Life’ is indeed a biodiverse haven, and your time spent

volunteering will help to encourage more animals to return here in the years to come. CORAL REEF CONSERVATION PROJECT Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRACC) is a non-profit organisation that works primarily around Pom Pom island, where it runs marine conservation expeditions, with volunteers assisting in the reef restoration and coral planting efforts. It is aimed at protecting the reefs that can support a decent reef shark population and involves regular reef and shark surveys. As a volunteer, you will assist in reef restoration and coral planting efforts, patrolling the island, monitoring all nesting females and relocating eggs to the hatchery to ensure that they do not end up at the Semporna market. Volunteers also help in teaching English to the children in nearby rural communities. TRACC is expanding its coral nursery area and is working with villagers on seaweed culture, sea cucumber culture, as well as employment opportunities for women at their Batik and sewing centre. blue (ocean), this one is for you. If you do not already have a diving qualification, fear not – TRACC has your back. PADI dive courses are available on the island. BORNEAN SUN BEAR CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME To fight the endangerment of Bornean sun bears due to deforestation, illegal wildlife trade and poaching, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) is set up to shelter rescued sun bears, rehabilitate them for return to the wild and promote their conservation. Volunteers work with biologists and researchers in data entry of bear behaviour, feeding and cleaning enclosures (animal husbandry), preparing enrichment (to stimulate the bears and mimic their natural habitat), and improving animal enclosures. Conservation is largely dependent on the education of locals and visitors to the community. Volunteers are therefore encouraged to learn as much as they can about the sun bears. They may even be called upon to talk to school children and conduct an educational lesson, speak to visitors to the centre or present an educational gallery about sun bears. WETLANDS CONSERVATION PROJECT Located two kilometers north-east of Kota Kinabalu city, the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre (KKWC) covers 24 hectares (60 acres) of mangrove forest. A strange wetland area where once water collected and drained into the sea, it is now moving inland due to reclamation of land. These wetlands act as home to many species of wildlife, thus conservation efforts are ongoing to ensure the environment stays safe and sound. The Voluntary Guardian programme requires you to volunteer for at least 10 days, and you may find yourself involved in wetland management, environmental education and fundraising events for the KKWC.

Chongqing Delights

By Emily Lowe

One of the four municipalities in China since 1997, alongside Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin, is Chongqing which boasts the largest population in southwestern China. Strategically located at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, it is the gateway to the Three Gorges, the starting point for a promising scenic boat cruise downstream Yangtze through the Three Gorges Dam. Chongqing recorded a huge 14% growth in tourism last year, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council survey, out of 65 global cities polled. With China’s focus on “Go West” policy for development strategy, this industrial centre is poised to rapidly transform into a modernised city. UNESCO World Heritage Sites Travellers who are pursuing UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the world can tick two items off their bucket list when they visit Chongqing. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1999 are five clusters of rock carvings in Dazu County. Collectively known as Dazu Rock Carvings, they date from the 9th to the 13th century. With more than 10,000 carvings in total, these cave temple art depict elements of Tantric Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. About three hours’ drive southeast of Dazu Rock Carvings is the Wulong Karst 24 | M ALIND OM AG | JANUARY 2 019

“Chongqing recorded a huge 14% growth in tourism last year” National Park, that is home to the Wulong Mountain Forest Park. The National Park is part of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2007. The greater South China Karst actually covers 176,228 hectares of land that spreads beyond Chongqing, to Guizhou, Guangxi, and Yunnan. Still very much unexplored by international tourists, marvel at the towering karst landform, gorges and huge cave system. Panda House Of the many animal houses at Chongqing Zoo, that is believed to be the biggest urban zoo in the country, Panda House is easily the main attraction of the zoo, receiving more than a billion visitors every year. As Chongqing is located near to Chengdu city, a major habitat of giant pandas, the zoo makes an ideal home for the pandas for the purpose of research and conservation through breeding

programmes. Panda House, which is set up according to the natural environment of the giant panda, occupies approximately two hectares of land, out of 45 for the entire zoo. Take a step back in time Setting foot in Ci Qi Kou (Porcelain Village) is like being transported back to the time of ancient China, the kind of scene that is commonly illustrated in Chinese imperial movies. Timber and bamboo structures with huge signage boards in Mandarin, and liberally decorated with red Chinese lanterns, this is a village that is still very much untouched by development or modernisation. Ci Qi Kou, situated by the bank of Jialing River, was formerly known as Long Yin. The name change is a tribute to the village’s famed porcelain production, dating as far back as more than 1700 years ago, during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911). Although it is often said that a trip to China is a cultural exploration, a visit to Ci Qi Kou elevates that experience manifold. The Hotpot City While in Chongqing, do not forget to indulge in a hotpot meal or two. With easily 50,000 and more eateries offering the hotpot, you can tell that this spicy cuisine is more than food; it is part of a lifestyle. It is not for nothing that the China Cuisine Association declared Chongqing as the “Hotpot City” in 2007. An assortment of ingredients are used to cook in the hotpot filled to the brim with boiling spicy soup; three compulsory items would be ox stomach, duck intestine, and ox artery. The hotpot features prominently in a celebratory meal, it is also comfort food on a normal day. To eat like a local when in Chongqing, go for the hotpot.

Panda spotted! Photo by Jay Wennington Dazu Rock Carvings Photo by www.christravelblog.com

A visit to phantom world An attraction that should be included in a trip to Chongqing is Fengdu Ghost City, popular for its portrayal of the netherworld. Despite its name, there is no resident ghosts at Fengdu, do not worry. In fact, the main objective of this ghost city is possibly to spread the teachings of the combined beliefs of Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, to instil traditional values through Chinese folklore as displayed via Chinese mythology. Some of the highlights within Fengdu Ghost City include the Bridge of Troubled Water, Emperor’s Palace, and Gate of Hell. Fly to Chongqing Although Chongqing is a common starting port for a Yangtze River cruise, as you can see, there are more to do and see within this “Mountain City”. Chongqing waits for you to take delight in its natural wonders and indulge in its rich cultural heritage.

Rang Mahal, Bangkok

By Sudipto De

Bangkok has a variety of international cuisine from all over the world. Besides the amazing Thai local food, a North Indian cuisine called Rang Mahal is making quite an impression with its’ authentic flavours in Bangkok. Located on the 26th floor of the Rembrandt Hotel, the restaurant overlooks the beautiful Bangkok skyline. Rang Mahal in itself is done in colours of Maroon and White so common to the Indian royalty. From the furnishings to the cutlery that graces the tables, the restaurant transports you back to an India that you would have read about in the books The menu at the Rang Mahal features a delectable selection of flavours from all over India. The best way to start off any Indian meal, especially a North Indian one is with Chaat and there is quite a bit on the menu here. Be it the Paapri Chat Dil Pasand or the Aloo Chaat, the spicy, tangy flavours will have you set up within no time at all. There is an Achaari Murgh Tikka along with a Malmaali Seekh Kebab that literally melts in the mouth. But it is the Raan-E-Khyber that excites the palate the most. A tender lamb leg that has been marinated in exotic spices overnight before being slow roasted over a charcoal fire. The mains not only features the best flavours

from the North in the form of a creamy Murgh Makhanwala and the spicy, tangy Murgh Tikka Masala but there is also some flavours from the Western part of India including a Goan Fish Curry and a Chicken Vindaloo. Ex-Taj Chef Rajan Misra also cooks up some vegetarian fare in the form of a delectably soft Malai Kofta and Dum Aloo that you must try out. A Daal-Maa-Rang Mahal and a Tadka Raita are the best accompaniments to a variety of Indian Breads. The stuffed Kulcha is highly recommended, a fine flour bread filled with cottage cheese and spices. Or you might just plan to try out the Keema Naan filled with minced lamb meat or the Peshawari Naan stuffed with dried fruits. For Indians who are missing their home cooked food, the Ghar Ka Khaana menu offers some particularly good options. There is a simple Chana Tariwala to combine with some Missi Roti that will have your senses tempered. No Indian meal can be complete without the desserts and range at Rang Mahal is quite tempting. While the Gulab Jamun is a perennial favourite, the Kesar Rasmalai and the winter speciality Gajar Halwa must be tried out. Rang Mahal allows you to taste the best of royal Indian food right in the heart of Bangkok.

99° East Golf Club in Langkawi Langkawi’s newest tourist attraction 99° East is an integrated resort community in Langkawi, offering world-class services and infrastructure as part of its efforts to catapult the legendary island to global standards. The first phase of 99° East comprises an 18-hole championship golf course, Istana Bukit Malut, built as the Langkawi residence for the late Sultan of Kedah, and a Forest Estate of 58 landed villa lots, sea view apartment complex and a hotel. Phase 1 of the development covers an area of over 250 acres, offering an incredibly low density throughout the estate. Large land lots allow for the preservation of native woodland and for each house to have its own tropical gardens and the privacy that affords. experience in Asia, taking many of its design references from Australian and even Scottish links courses. Long wild grasses and reeds dominate the out of play areas together with the signature rice terraces, both distinctive features of this 7,330-yard championship course that integrates native forest, wetlands and an orchard valley, with views both over the ocean and across the entire island to the west. The vision for 99° East is to create a superior, sustainable resort development that embodies Langkawi’s UNESCO geopark status whilst celebrating the island’s outstanding natural beauty by integrating its environment into a series of complementary communities and recreational areas. This vision is in-line with the state’s commitment to the development and preservation of Langkawi.

the world,” said Jones in an interview. “I believe patience, diligence and a genuine love for people is the key ingredient to be a successful Hotellier. One also needs to have a vision and a good team to work with and I have had really good and talented people to turn my vision and ideas into reality. “We are very brand focused, and have a clear definition of what our brands are and the products and services we offer such fit the promised brand proposition. My main priority is to make the guest feel amazing and in return it creates loyalty and repeat business,” added Jones. He also believes that social media is incredibly important. “We need to have ‘instagramable moments’ in the hotel. Restaurants and bars are becoming more and more popular as the focus is on the local customer, making F&B relevant to the local community and when travellers come, they also want to be where the locals hang out.”
