Malaysian Palm Oil/ FEATUR E
Malaysian Palm Oil As health becomes more and more prevalent in today’s society, the Malaysian Government is taking steps to promote the goodness and health benefits of palm oil to the world. Malaysia is currently the world’s largest exporter of palm oil and the secondlargest producer of palm oil in the world after Indonesia. Palm oil is obtained from the fruit of the oil palm tree. It contains saturated and unsaturated fats. Palm olein, the liquid fraction from palm oil, is one of the most preferred cooking oils, both for household food preparation and in food manufacturing globally. The exponential growth in the cultivation of oil palm has helped feed the world’s growing demand for food, fuel, feed and fibre, and brought many economic benefits. Based on research by Professor Yuen Kah Hay from School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, crude palm oil is very rich in phytonutrients such as vitamin E tocotrienols (essential for the health of nervous system due to their neuroprotective properties), carotenoids (pro-vitamin A, essential for immune system and the development of tissues and bones). Studies have also shown that Vitamin A deficiency in children (which may cause poor development and even blindness) can be easily corrected by feeding them biscuits baked with red palm oil. Palm oil also contains squalene and palm phenolics. Recent animal studies showed palm phenolics to be good for controlling the onset of diabetes.
“Malaysia is currently the world’s largest exporter of palm oil and the second-largest producer of palm oil in the world after Indonesia.”
Today, we know the real culprits behind increased risk of heart diseases are transfat and high-carbohydrate diets (especially carbohydrates with high glycemic index). Palm oil is, in fact, a healthy oil. When used for deep frying, it is able to withstand degradation better than most edible oils. Moreover, at least three studies involving humans have shown that it is comparable to olive oil in terms of cardiovascular risk outcomes. Palm oil gets its reddish colour from the carotenes beta-carotene and lycopene, the same nutrients that give colour to carrots and
tomatoes. Its carotene levels are 15 times higher than carrots and 300 times higher than tomatoes. This is why palm oil is hailed as the best source of beta-carotene and alphacarotene, both of which are precursors to vitamin A. Also, palm oil is affordable. As the world population grows, there may be a shortage of edible oils in the near future. Palm oil can be the solution to this problem. S o u rce s : M a l a y s i a n Pa lm O il Co u n cil

Malindo Air to Promote Local Palm Oil Malindo Air have pledged its support to promote Malaysian palm oil to its air travellers. Malaysian Primary Industries Minister, Teresa Kok expressed her appreciation that Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd and three local airlines have displayed their patriotism by supporting this national campaign to spread the goodness of palm oil to their travellers. Teresa also said that the palm oil industry was more efficient, with yield ten times more than other oils per hectare planted, thus utilising less land, and it used fewer pesticides and chemical fertilisers than other vegetable oil sources. Malindo Air, on the other hand, is committed to spread the goodness of palm oil to foreign visitors through its various in-house channels.

Taj Mahotsav Festival, Agra, India
Maroon 5 live in Melbourne
Taj Mahotsav is a festival that is held near the Eastern gate of Taj Mahal, Agra. The duration of the festival is ten long days where guests can witness a splendid display of Indian culture and traditions. This festival invokes the memories of the old Mughal era and nawabi style prevalent in Uttar Pradesh in the 18th and 19th centuries. So popular is the festival that people from far off come to join this festival. One reason why this time of the year is chosen for Taj Mahotsav is that the season is also ideal for touring the city as the climate is benevolently cool for sightseeing.
Maroon 5 stand out as not only one of pop music’s most enduring artists, but also one of the 21st century’s biggest acts. CHINA Zhangjiajie National Forest Park The floating ‘Hallelujah Mountains’ you saw on the movie Avatar were inspired by a real place on Earth. It is the breathtakingly beautiful Zhangjiajie National Forest Park located in the Chinese province of Hunan. It looks familiar because films buffs may recognize the landscape from James Cameron’s Oscar-winning 2009 scifi movie Avatar. In fact, one of the park’s quartzsandstone towers, the 3,540-foot-high Southern Sky Column, was officially renamed ‘Avatar Hallelujah Mountain’ for its role in inspiring the film’s set. The park, which became China’s first national forest park when it was officially inaugurated in 1982 and was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2004, is home to several of these towering, tree-covered quartzsandstone peaks. The most notable geographic features of the park are the pillar-like formations that are seen throughout the park. Although resembling karst terrain, this area is not underlain by limestones and is not the product of chemical dissolution, which is characteristic of limestone karst. They are the result of many years of physical, rather than chemical, erosion. Much of the weathering which forms these pillars are the result of expanding ice in the winter and the plants which grow on them. The weather is moist year round, and as a result, the foliage is very dense. The weathered material is carried away primarily by streams. These formations are a distinct hallmark of Chinese landscape, and can be found in many ancient Chinese paintings. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Photo credit : www.trover.com

Zhangye Danxia Landform Geographical Park Zhangye Danxia Landform is famous for the spectacular colourful mountain range of rock formation – with mixed colours of red, yellow, blue, white, green. It took more than 24 million years of arduous deposition of mineral settlings with different colours to form layers. As time passed by, these weighty rock layers were condensed into rock mountains, and then a slight and slow ripple from the impact between IndoAustralian and Eurasian continental shelfs wrinkled the mountains into some incredible fluctuation. At the same time, wild, rain, sunlight and time together sculpted the mountains extraordinary shapes with different colours, patterns and sizes. Zhangye’s Danxia landscape has lots of precipitous red cliffs, most of which are several hundred meters high, and multi-coloured ridges of weathered strata, sometimes stretching to the horizon. These formations, sometimes smooth sometimes sharp, stand out against the greens or grays of the plains, looking grand and magnificent, vigorous and virile. Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park spreads across an area of 300 to 510 square kilometres and in November 2011, it was officially granted geopark status.

Pangong Lake Pangong Lake, one of the most surreal places in India has suddenly come into spotlight after the movie 3 Idiots and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Located around 50 km from Leh, the capital of Ladakh, Pangong Lake is quite huge and it shares boundary with China (Tibet) in the eastern side. Situated at an altitude of 4,350m, it is also among the highest lakes in India. The interesting thing about the lake is that colour of water appears different with different time of the day. Among the most beautiful places for photographers, this place is also used to camp during the night to gaze at the stars. Pangong Lake along with most other parts of Leh should be visited only during the summers (June to September) as the temperatures goes very low in winter. Chand Baori The Chand Baori is a stepwell built over a thousand years ago in the Abhaneri village of Rajasthan. It is one of the largest stepwells in the world and also one of the most beautiful ones. Located in the eastern part of the province of Rajasthan, it was built by King Chanda somewhere in the 9th century. The Chand Baori is not an easy landmark to find, thus it is one of the hidden secrets of India. Stepwells, also called bawdi or baori, are unique to this nation. The wells have steps built into the sides that lead down to the water. Chand Baori was built during the 8th and 9th centuries and has 3,500 narrow steps arranged in perfect symmetry, which descend 20m to the bottom of the well. Centuries ago, the stepwells were built in the arid zones of Rajasthan to provide water all year through. About 64 feet deep, it is India’s largest and deepest stepwells with 13 floors and was built in the 9th century for water harvesting.

INDONESIA Ijen Volcanic Lake World’s largest acidic lake, which is in the brilliant turquoise colour that captures not only the sunlight but every traveller’s heart. The active Kawah Ijen Volcano is part of a complex of volcanoes in Banywang Regency, Java. This popular complex is situated within Ijen crater with stratovolcano Gunung Merapi as the highest point. It is one of the world’s most unusual volcanoes because instead of producing the usual red lava and black smoke, its underground activities result in bright blue flames rising into the air. Some people even call it electric blue fire. The phenomenon is caused when the volcano’s sulfuric gases come into contact with air temperature above 360°C. Borobudur Located on the island of Java, the magnificent Borobudur temple is the world’s biggest Buddhist monument, an ancient site widely considered to be one of the world’s seven wonders. The temple sits majestically on a hilltop overlooking lush green fields and distant hills. Built in the 9th century during the reign of the Syailendra dynasty, the temple’s design in Gupta architecture reflects India’s influence on the region, yet there are enough indigenous scenes and elements incorporated to make Borobudur something out of a fairytale book. The monument is a marvel of design, decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The architecture and stonework of this temple has no equal. And it was built without using any kind of cement or mortar. The temple has remained strong even through ten centuries of neglect. It was rediscovered in 1815, buried under volcanic ash. In the 1970’s the Indonesian Government and UNESCO worked together to restore Borobudur to its former majesty The restoration took eight years to complete and today Borobudur is one of Indonesia and the world’s most valuable treasures. The temple is decorated with stone carvings in bas-relief representing images from the life of Buddha. Commentators claim that this is the largest and most complete ensemble of Buddhist reliefs in the world, unsurpassed in artistic merit.

The first of these is the Ocean Course & Clubhouse, a 27 holed course masterminded by Ernie Els. Divided into three different courses, namely the Coast (par 36), Ridge (par 37) and Lakes (par 36), each of the holes has multiple teeing options which makes for quite an interesting experience. The clubhouse also offers practise facilities which open at 7 in the morning and allow you to get into your stride before heading out for the day. The two holes that make you fall in love with the course are the 9th one on the Coast which opens to a magnificent view of the South China Sea while the last hole on the Lakes proves technically the most demanding one. Great cabin crew, tasty snacks and excellent service. Just before landing, one of the two cabin crew approached me to ask if I could handover some snacks to my fellow umrah travelers flying in Y as they will definitely be hungry while waiting for the connecting. One of them even went to the extent of re-heating the snacks and properly packing them for me to carry. Ladies of OD2105, thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity! – Ali_1801, (January, 2019)

Fine art and live music lovers rejoice in the diversity of the city’s offerings, and nature lovers cannot get enough of the koalas. Newly opened rooftop bars and restaurants have added the mega-city style to this subtropical metropolis. But what I like the most here is its casual and easy-going character. Despite becoming hipper and more fun with times; it still has not traded off its flip-flops for formal footwear. Thiruvananthapuram By Zeenee Coogan
A city composite and cosmopolitan in character, Thiruvananthapuram, formerly known as Trivandrum, is the largest and most populous city in Kerala, India. With numerous historic monuments, a farreaching shoreline giving it some of the most beautiful beaches, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage, Thiruvananthapuram is a popular tourist destination Despite being the capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram has, quite amazingly, managed to keep itself from the vexatious aura of any usual capital city. Built on seven hills, this evergreen city of South India is an ideal retreat – quaint yet urban. With so much to see and experience around, there is a long list of things to do in Thiruvananthapuram and more often than not, people tend to get confused about what to do and what not to, in the limited span of time. Save yourself from confusion and post-trip longings with our cheat sheet of unique and interesting things to do in Thiruvananthapuram. 24 | M ALIND OM AG | FEB R UARY 2 019
Get on a heritage trail Take a step back to discover the glorious past of the city and its suburbs, home to kings and warriors, scholars, traders, artists and artisans. It does not get more ancient than this, at least, not anywhere nearby. Despite the name, Pandavanpara has got nothing to do with the Pandavas or even the Mahabharata. Pandavanpara, near Ancode, Neyyatinkara, is actually a towering granite rock that hides a pre-historic natural cave shelter. Getting to it involves a trek up a dirt path and crawling through a small opening. It is worth the effort, though, for inside the cave are several huge etchings that archaeologists guesstimate, date back to the Neolithic times. Look out for rock art (most probably carved using small stone implements) of prehistoric flowers, leaves, the sun, human figures with bows and arrows, geometric symbols for feather, shield and trident as well as a number of abstract depictions. Padavanpara is also a popular

rock-climbing destination. Since 1965, the Vizhinjam rock cut temple has been on Archaeological Survey of India’s list of protected monuments. It is said to have been constructed in the 8th century, when the Ay chieftains ruled the land. Vizhinjam, a prominent seaport of old, was their administrative capital and the site of many a battle with the kings of rival empires. Kanthalloor Shala, the ancient University in the city might have had a campus at Vizhinjam too. According to archaeologists, it is an “incomplete” temple, carved into a small granite boulder. As with many rock cut temples in Kerala, Shiva is the main deity. On either side of the sanctum sanctorum are unfinished reliefs of Shiva in his manifestation as Kirathan, complete with bow and arrow, on the left and Shiva with his consort Parvathi on the right. Other notable heritage sites: Madavoorpara monument, Koyikkal Palace, Neeramankara Shiva temple and Thrivikramangalam Vishnu temple Check yourself into an ayurvedic retreat Ayurvedic resorts in Kerala are plentiful, due to the moist, humid climate and abundant supply of medicinal plants and herbs. Not only can you rejuvenate your body, you can have a wonderful vacation at the same time. To save money, go during the monsoon season (from June to September). The weather is perfect for Ayurveda at that time.
There is a long tradition of Ayurveda in Thiruvananthapuram, many resorts and retreats offer authentic treatments by experienced specialists. Ayurvedic treatments are available in small affordable stays offering a homely atmosphere and dedication to the treatments, as well as in five-star resorts, which provide professional Ayurvedic cures and ultimate luxury at the same time. However, if you have a serious illness, do consider an Ayurvedic hospital that can house you for a long period without breaking the bank. Retreat packages usually include basic accommodation, delicious, healthy vegetarian meals, healing classes, personal

Do not let the sun set on your thrill The nightlife in Thiruvananthapuram is very enthralling. Though most of the shops closes around 9pm, there are many places including the beaches where you can enjoy the nightlife. An evening stroll along Kovalam beach will reveal a 35m lighthouse at Kurumkal hillock. There is music, dancing and singing along the beach. Dress code is casual and the weather enjoyable. For more entertainment, check out the Kathakali Drama Show, which is renowned for its great performing arts. This very indigenous dance drama is sophisticated and provides you with a good view of the tradition in Thiruvananthapuram. Shree Karthika Thirunal Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram’s Fort district, holds regular classical dance-theater performances (mostly Carnatic, but also Hindustani) throughout the year. The theater has its own company but hosts outside groups showcasing various genres, including Kathakali, Mohiniattam, and Bharatanatyam. You can observe Kalaripayattu martial arts classes, and even arrange special performances or lecture demonstrations. Established in 1956, this institution has represented India at numerous international festivals.
Getting there Malindo Air flies to TRIVANDRUM 3x weekly. Book your flights online at malindoair.com
Tip: Also part of the nightlife in Thiruvananthapuram is fishing. You can fish the waters both day and night, giving you something to do around the clock. If you are not familiar with the area, you will definitely want to take advantage of one of the local fishing tour companies. The sights in Thiruvananthapuram, are ageless and continue to attract repeat travellers. However, taking a detour from the popular tourist spots offers a different experience. The main advantage of such a journey is the leisurely pace that can be adopted.

Raymond Chan, a Regional Director, South East Asia, Hong Kong Tourism Board, (HKTB) may have started his career in the aviation industry but it is the tourism industry that he is passionate about. He has been with HKTB for almost six years now. The travel and tourism industry is highly dynamic and one is constantly learning, as consumer trends and behavior changes very fast. “I find tourism an extremely interesting industry as it is all about people and their experiences. I feel there is a lot of positive energy in this industry, as generally people aspire to travel – whether to take a break, to explore new places, to celebrate occasions or even for work,” said Raymond. “I enjoy understanding people’s motivation to travel. There is also a sense of hometown pride in working and contributing to the city where I am from and sharing its wonder with others. Working on different campaigns over the years, Hong Kong never ceases to amaze me with new and different discoveries and places of interest. Raymond believes that there are four things that can help anyone regardless of what line of profession they are in: keeping a positive attitude, open-mindedness, always adaptable to change and most

importantly, to be an inspiring leader to create the best chemistry with your team When asked about the future plans of HKTB, Raymond said they are looking to continue driving Southeast Asia as an important source market for tourism in Hong Kong. “Many travellers are enthused by old world charm with a contemporary makeover, and we have indulged such travellers with our latest neighbourhood launch, Sham Shui Po – which is home to both traditional sensibilities and modern tastes. “We are planning to introduce more of such authentic and interesting neighbourhoods for travellers to explore. Muslim travel segment is an important focus for us and we will be actively adding on offerings to ensure Muslim travellers can explore Hong Kong worryfree,” added Raymond. He also stresses that social media is a key platform to promote tourism, as travel is one of the most shared topics on Facebook and Instagram. People love sharing new experiences and travel is full of them. Hong Kong provides travellers a wide range of offerings from city life to outdoors, from culture to technology giving one a whole plethora of topics to create content on.
