Hammam Spa Stepping Into Moroccan Ecstacy

By Sharmila Vella

I

f you are looking for a unique spa experience, then look no further than the traditional Moroccan encounter with their ancient method of body exfoliation and massage at the Hammam Spa in Kuala Lumpur. The Hammam (bath house) has its origins from ancient Greek-Roman bathhouse culture. It is a practice which has charmed and influenced thousands from different cultures throughout history. While your imagination takes you on a mystical journey into the past, this steam and body exfoliation followed by massage is part of the authentic traditions of Morocco. Unlike a traditional spa treatment, on arrival to the Hammam Spa, your experience will involve three different rooms. A warm room to acclimatise your body to the heat, the main hot hammam area where your personal therapist will carry out the luxury cleansing and bathing ritual and a decadent lounge area to lie back and enjoy that moment of relaxation and calm. While you are enjoying the lounge area, you will be served Moroccan mint tea to aid in restoring and

balancing your fluid levels and a sweet Moroccan pastry called baklava for your sweet palate. The spa is beautifully decorated in typical Moroccan design with its long, stunning tiled space in the regal Moroccan style with flickering wall sconces, courtyards and plenty of private nooks and crannies. Hammam Spa incorporates beauty and well-being into its rituals that help purify the mind, body and spirit. The spa provides you with a spirited and cultured social environment in which to relax, revive the mind and soften the skin. The treatment begins with a cleansing ritual that uses steam and water to effectively wash away all the dead skin that your body has built up over time. The experienced Moroccan therapist will start with a scalp massage using essential oil followed by applying henna and black soap all over the body in the heart of the Hammam after resting on a warm marble slab in a private area. Every part of your body will be soaped from head to toe. It is like being a child again and getting pampered. After being left to soak for 10 to 15 minutes in the hot sauna room, the therapist will vigorously exfoliate using

a special scrubbing mitt beginning with the back, moving on the shoulders, neck, chest, stomach and legs. Feel your cares melt away as your skin is gently sloughed of impurities as you are rinsed from head to toe, by buckets of warm water. The second step in the Hammam ritual is Moorish body envelopment. It is a special traditional recipe of Moorish culture to use pure volcanic clay base to polish your body. Volcanic clay is rich in minerals and when it is infused with the essence of aromatic medicinal plants, it leaves your body soft and shiny. After this is your traditional Moroccan massage as you are made to relax at the expertise of the therapist as she releases all the tension with a combination of deep pressure applied at specific points. You can choose your favourite essences which will be infused with precious Argan oil. Argan oil is a rich source of Vitamin E and is highly valued for its hydrating and anti-aging qualities when used as a massage oil. Now you can enjoy the Moroccan culture right here in Malaysia at Bangsar Village 11 or Publican Shopping Mall.

WANDERLUST MIRI

teeped in a rich history of mankind existence 40,000 year ago to housing the Borneo Rainforest to UNESCO World Heritage Gunung Mulu National Park, Miri, Sarawak has emerged as an interesting and popular destination in the global arena. Home to diverse indigenous tribes and endemic flora and fauna, this serene coastal city in northeastern Sarawak, started out as a small settlement of fishing village to now a modern city, some one hundred years later. Quickly gaining its popularity in tourism, Miri became the 10th city in Malaysia to be granted official city status in 2005, the first non-state capital city to be bestowed such status. Although Miri has long been known for its exotic national parks and caves, its underwater world is now gaining attention of scuba divers ever since the untouched coral reefs and marine life were discovered in recent years. Besides being the birthplace of the Malaysian petroleum industry, this oil and timber rich city is the main tourist gateway to Gunung Mulu National Park, Loagan Bunut National Park, Lambir Hills National Park, Niah National Park and Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park. The Gunung Mulu National Park with its Sarawak Chamber is one of the favourite eco-tourism destinations in the world. Besides being surrounded by thick Rainforest jungle, Miri is also famous for its local delicacies. Hawkers’ food and the famous ‘Tamu’ or the ‘Farmer’s Market’ is where local vendors sell a variety of tropical fruits and vegetables at a nominal price to the tourists and locals. 24 | MALINDOMAG

The local delicacies are a must try for any visitors visiting Miri. Among the unique dishes to try are Sarawak Laksa and the famous Kolok Mee. The Laksa is a noodle soup with chicken or seafood and coconut milk as the main content of the soup whereas Kolok Mee is egg noodles fried in crushed garlic and fresh seafood. Also famous in Miri are Dim Sums. The popular delicacy is found in various teahouses. They contain varied ingredients like beef, pork, snails, prawns, vegetables and many others. So take the opportunity to savour the ordinary to the exotic as you enjoy the local foods such as sago grubs, ‘temilok’ (marine worms), jungle snails and ‘umai’ (raw fish salad) or continental fare like rice with meat dishes and vegetables, which are readily available everywhere. Sarawak layer cake (kek lapis) is also a speciality in Sarawak. The layer cake comes in a variety of flavours and colours to indulge and it is also a nice gift to bring home for friends and families to enjoy. Visiting anywhere in Sarawak will not be complete if you do not visit the longhouses. Longhouses are the traditional houses of many of the natives in Sarawak such as the Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu. A longhouse is a terraced street of separate dwellings covered by one roof. A tuai rumah (headman) is the head of the longhouse. Every family has their own separate quarters or rooms. Communal activities like festivals and weddings are carried out on the verandah. It is very interesting to see how the culture and traditions are still practiced and maintained in Sarawak.

Gunung Mulu National Park The breathtaking wonders of Mother Nature is easily appreciated in the Mulu Park as it is both captivating and beautiful. It is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful park in Borneo, as well as being the biggest park in Sarawak. This UNESCO World Heritage National Park features its two highest peaks, Gunung Mulu (2376m) and Gunung Api (1710m). In between are rugged karst mountains, deep gorges with crystal-clear rivers, and home to some exceptionally diverse wildlife. Mulu’s most famous hiking attractions are the Pinnacles, a forest of razor-sharp limestone spires, and the so-called Headhunters’ Trail, which follows an old tribal war path down to Limbang. The caves, cliffs, gorges and rock pinnacles are limestone formations dating from between 17 and 40 million years ago. Within Mulu National Park lies the biggest underground cave chamber of the world called the Sarawak Chamber. According to the BBC’s Planet Earth series, 40 Boeing 747 aircraft can fit in it. Also within the Mulu Park you can find the longest cave of Southeast Asia, the Clearwater Cave with a documented length of well over 75 kilometers. The Malaysian Ministry of Tourism is now trying to get Mulu listed as Global Geopark.

It is not only plant life that is diverse and plentiful at Lambir 237 different species of birds, flying squirrels, wild pigs, gibbons, many different types of monkey, various species of deer, and untold insects and other invertebrates, all combine to create Lambir’s rich biological kaleidoscope. The park is also home to some of its picturesque waterfalls, scattered pools, good birdwatching and impressive tall trees in the tropical Borneo Rainforest.

The park’s popularity became known the world over when archeologists led by Tom Harrisson discovered evidence of human existence dating back some 40,000 years ago. The oldest modern human remains discovered in Southeast Asia were found at Niah, making the park one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. world who came and started their excavation in the Niah caves. Rock paintings were also found in what has become known as the Painted Cave, and the discovery of several small canoe-like coffins (death ships) indicate that this site was once used as a burial ground. At the heart of the park is the Great Cave, one of the largest caverns in the world. The caves also accommodate a staggering number of bats and are an important nesting site for swiftlets, some of whose species supply the vital ingredient for bird’s-nest soup. Traditionally, the Penan are custodians and collectors of the nests, while the Iban have the rights to the caves’ other commodity, bat and bird guano, which is highly valued as fertilizers.

IN-FLIGHT TRAVEL INSURANCE

Be Prepared for any Mishaps During Vacation

H

olidays are all about quality family time, but travelling with young children is sometimes quite exhausting. Here are our tips to help you overcome the tantrums, tears and mishaps during your vacation.

Health first Put together a simple first aid kit that can cope with the day-to-day trips and slips. It is amazing how quickly a little “magic” cream will mend a scraped knee. Include: • plasters of various sizes (or a strip of cut-to-size plasters and scissors as long as you remember not to pack it in your hand luggage if you are flying) • antiseptic cream • hand sanitiser • wet wipes • a triangular bandage (which has many uses) • child-strength paracetamol • thermometer • anti-sting cream • travel sickness tablets • teething remedies(depending on the age of your child) And if your child is asthmatic, always carry an inhaler in your carry-on bag in case of an attack on-board.

Destination, destination, destination If your child is very young consider your holiday destination carefully. Research the immunisations and medication recommended, as well as how easy it will be to get nappies or the right baby milk formula. And if your child has food allergies, it always pays to know the safe places to dine. That does not mean you can not be adventurous, but you also do not want to make life too difficult. Getting the packing right If you are flying, pack a daysack of activities for your children to keep them happy. Go one step further and wrap each activity in colourful paper or newspaper. Just unwrapping a “present” will keep them occupied for hours. Before you leave home, take a photo of the contents of your bag, so you can keep tabs on what you have got with you. Consider loading a few child-friendly games and apps onto an iPad. An iPod Touch is ideal for older children: choose a few educational games, a few films and let them record their holiday using the camera. Just make sure you pack some headphones: there are only so many times an adult should be made to listen to their child’s favourite soundtrack. Snack attack Pack a few snacks. Raisins and dry cereal are great not only because they are healthy, but because they are fiddly and time-consuming to eat, keeping the little ones busy for a while. If you need to pack baby food, choose pouches rather than jars, as they are lighter and

less likely to break. No-one wants to start a holiday with a handbag full of banana puree. Ditch the buggy If you are planning an activity holiday, think about trading the buggy in for a sturdy baby carrier. If you are visiting an old city with cobbles, ancient ruins or planning a rural escape, a buggy is just inconvenient. There are some great baby backpacks on the market that can be used as day sacks. Take the buggy If you are staying at a resort or a villa then having a buggy that reclines will make it easier for you to stay by the pool or go out for dinner, as your child is able to nap comfortably. Strollers are also allowed right up to the flight gate so you do not have to carry your child around. Just remember not to load it up with too much stuff – you will be asked to empty and collapse it at security. Travelling with young children can be stressful, but with a little planning, some of the pitfalls can be avoided. Just remember that all the little hiccups make great holiday memories in the end. Flavours of Peranakan Cuisine at

By Sharmila Vella Images by Siti Aisyah

A

s Malaysia is known for blending traditions and interracial marriages, it is no surprise that the rich culture of Malay and Chinese cuisines will be mixed as well. Peranakan, or in other terms, ‘Baba Nyonya’, is a mix of two different customs and traditions, and the term was coined back in the late 15th century when interracial marriages first began between Chinese immigrants and local Malays in Malaya. Riding on the popularity of Peranakan culture, Bibik Heritage has taken its essence and offers authentic Peranakan cuisine at its restaurant in Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2). Baba is referred to male Peranakan while women are known as Nyonyas and if they are older, Bibiks. Hence the name of the restaurant, Bibik Heritage. The restaurant is complemented by the fashions and accessories at Bibik Closet as props and local delicacies at Baba Bar. The Bibik Heritage restaurant projects the design, architecture and ambience of a Peranakan house while recapturing the essence of the Baba and Nyonya heritage and culture such as the distinctive fashion, food and decorative elements. Peranakan design elements are typified by flora and fauna motif which symbolises auspicious and positive elements such as prosperity, happiness and harmony. Here at Bibik Heritage, the flavours of the past are reproduced with scrupulous authenticity, bringing a selection of perennial favourites like Melaka Asam Laksa, Popiah Chee, Fried Mee Siam, Bibik Fried Rice, Peranakan Laksa and famous desserts like Bubur Cha Cha and Nyonya Cendol.

Nyonya cooking is the result of blending Chinese ingredients with various distinct spices and cooking techniques used by the Malay/ Indonesian food that is similarly tangy, aromatic, spicy and herbal. The 24-hour eatery uses a variety of spices and an abundance of coconut milk in their sauce-based dishes. MalindoMag team were invited to do a food review of the restaurant. We started with Popiah Chee as appetisers. Popiah is fried spring roll filled with chicken, prawn and mushroom stuffing that goes well with homemade chili sauce dip. It was crispy and delicious and even the homemade chili sauce had the right amount of sweet and sour taste that complemented the popiah. Then we delved into Melaka Asam Laksa, which is a thick rice noodles served in a tangy fishy gravy garnished with fish chunks, shredded cucumber, lettuce, pineapple, onion and fragrant mint leaves. It has a mixture of taste that blends well with your palate. A must try dish is the fried Mee Siam. It is basically thin rice vermicelli which is stir fried in a special sauce with prawn, shredded egg and fried chicken. It is slightly spicy but the combination with egg and chicken is simply amazing. Then we had the Peranakan Laksa which is something like Curry Mee. It has coconut cream curry chicken broth with prawns and thick sambal. One can choose a choice of meehoon, yellow noodle or kway teow. For dessert, the traditional Bubur Cha Cha is a sweet course comprising sweet potato, yam, pearl sago and taro medley in a light coconut sauce. Another must try dessert is the Nyonya Cendol which is a mix of cendol, kidney beans and palm sugar in coconut milk swirled around shaved ice. It is a good thirst quenching dessert to have on a hot day. Bibik Heritage also serves traditional Nyonya kuih (local sweet delicacy) like seri muka, kueh lapis and talam cendol. So next time when you are at KLIA2, make a pit-stop and try these delicious cuisine at Bibik Heritage.

FEAST KAMPONG KRAVERS

Images courtesy of Kampung Kravers

There are some things Malaysians tend to miss when living abroad, like friends, families, and the various local cuisines. Even the most adventurous of stomachs will eventually long for the comfort and goodness that only homegrown favourites can provide. It was based on this ‘conviction’ that Kampong Kravers was setup. A venture by two friends, with a need to bring food from home wherever they travelled. Equipped with a recipe passed down from generation to generation, karipap (curry puff) was created using only the best and fresh ingredients. Kampong Kravers products are made in a halal kitchen, with the finest produce, with no added msg, preservatives or colouring. In addition to their range of Premium Spiral Karipaps, they have added a range of Nasi Kandar Curry Paste, frozen paste, cakes, creampuffs, snacks, and a whole range of ready-to-eat items, under the Kampong Kravers’ family. This company believes in the concept of ‘variety being the spice of life’. Their premium spiral 40 | MALINDOMAG

karipaps, with a ‘melt-in-themouth’ pastry, comes in a variety of different and very interesting flavours such as ‘hot & spicy’ chicken, beef, lamb, tuna, sardine and sweet potato, to ‘sweet, rich & creamy’ durian, cempedak, apple custard, banana gula melaka, to the famous mushroom mayonnaise flavour. Their range of Nasi Kandar curry paste consist of a sambal paste, a mutton marsala, a dhall curry, and curry paste for squid, shrimp, fish, chicken and beef. All very hearty, and robust in flavours. They have a range of frozen pre-cooked paste, which they call their ‘curries in a hurry’, from freezer to stove, to table in less than 30 mins. Spice marinade for meats, chili paste for nasi lemak, curry paste for chicken, meat or seafood, mihum briyani, curry laksa, and nyonya laksam. These are all definitely worth a try. And if you are in a hurry, their recent introduction of pre-cooked, pre-packed ‘Meals for 2’, is good to grab. You just need to heat, serve, and eat. It comes in six different flavours like ayam lemak chili padi,

ayam asam pedas, ayam telur masin, ayam masak merah, ayam kurma, and ayam rendang Johor. Kampung Kravers also have cream puffs and cakes. They are made in small batches, and made fresh every day. The light and fluffy puffs comes in a choice of rich and creamy Vanilla, Cempedak, Durian, or Custard filings.

I have been observing the loading of bags and cargo during bad weather for OD1002 to BKI. Ground staff were doing their best to load bags and cargo despite heavy rain. Flight were delayed due to loading/offloading of bags and cargo due to wet weather. The loading were done fast despite wet weather and bags were rushed into the belly. The aircraft interior and toilet were clean. Also, cabin crew were attentive to the passengers and advising them over the delay. Well done to all. Please extend the compliments to the Malindo Air Team! Best compliments.

I had problems with my ticket, and so I went to the ticketing office at Alor Setar airport. Had a good experience with the service and staff was very helpful with rectifying the problem. Thank you Malindo Air! Two thumbs up for great service.
