ugust is a special month for Malaysians as we come together to celebrate 61 years of Independence. The annual celebration serves as a tribute to our forefathers who persistently fought to gain a better future for the generations to come. Since gaining Independence, Malaysia has successfully diversified its economy from one that was initially agriculture and commodity-based, to manufacturing and services sectors. Not to mention, the evolving tourism industry whereby the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 ranked Malaysia as the fifth best in Asia on tourist arrivals. the world, with a trade to gross domestic product ratio averaging over 140 percent since 2010. This is a reminder of how far we have come and progressed since 1957. The nation’s vision of becoming a fully developed nation is also getting closer as we continue to make a mark in the global arena for our rich diversities of Asian culture and heritage. In honouring the nation’s pride, this month’s edition pay tributes to Malaysian Independence. Our cover story takes you on a virtual journey of Malaysian history and the Merdeka (Independence) celebration that takes place at Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur every year. Just as our country is progressing, Malindo Air is also reaching greater heights in becoming a significant player in the aviation scene. We continue to bring the Malaysian hospitality and services to all

our passengers. On the network expansion note, we have two new routes to look out for this month. Beginning August 2, we are flying to Labuan in East Malaysia and the other new route is from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to Singapore starting August 10. With the introduction of our new routes, we give you an insight of the wanders at Labuan in our Voyage section of the magazine. As for the other Voyage section, we take you to Yangon, Myanmar. The country is known to be one of the most magical and undiscovered destinations in the world, a golden land of breathtaking beauty and charm that is steeped in fascinating history and traditions. With this, I take this opportunity to wish all Malaysians Selamat Hari Merdeka (Happy Independence Day) and have a pleasant journey to your desired destination with Malindo Air.

Tunku Abdul Rahman declares Independence for the first time at Merdeka Stadium.

Malaysia is one of Asia’s hidden gems. The nation is a tapestry of diverse cultural influences, drawing from its local indigenous, Malay, Indian and Chinese communities as well as its colonial heritage. While the city’s past is evident in the nostalgic British colonial buildings, the future is apparent in the form of gleaming towering skyscrapers. The city boasts world class meeting and event facilities supported by major highways, an efficient rail network, thriving central business district and pleasant nightlife that caters for the capital’s multi-cultural population. Malaysia has no shortage of natural beauty, it is home to one of world’s oldest rainforests, extensive cave chambers and pristine beaches. With a rich immigrant and colonial history, Malaysia is truly rojak — a term that literally refers to a local fruit salad, but has come to describe the country›s diverse mix of cultures and religions. This is reflected in the sheer number places of worship, from Moorish Malayinfluenced mosques to South Indianinspired Hindu temples and Chinese Taoist temples. Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur is a place where Malay kampung (village) life stands cheek-by-jowl with the 21stcentury glitz of the Petronas Twin Towers, and shoppers shuttle from traditional wet markets to air-conditioned mega malls. Unesco World Heritage–listed, Melaka and George Town (Penang) have uniquely distinctive architectural and cultural townscapes, developed over a half a millennium of Southeast Asian cultural and trade exchange. Over in the Eastern Malaysian states, both Kuching and Kota Kinabalu offer fascinating introductions to contemporary and tribal life on Borneo.

History Back in the days, Malaysia was formerly known as the Federation of Malaya. During the 1950s, the nation experienced a time when freedom was yearned for and patriotism was at its peak. There were many political leaders who stood up for Malaya’s independence and the most prominent was Tunku Abdul Rahman. He successfully led a

mission to negotiate for Malaya’s independence and the first Merdeka proclamation began on 31 August 1957. A proud moment for all Malaysians when, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman intoned the words “Merdeka!” which means freedom three times before a crowd of dignitaries and citizens at the famous Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur. A walk Down Kuala Lumpur’s Memory Lane

This city on the banks of the Kelang and Gombak rivers is the capital of Malaysia. It recently emerged as the fourth best shopping destination after New York, Tokyo and London.”

Kuala Lumpur is such a historically rich city despite its youthful age only 155 years old compared to other major cities of the world. And yet, it has gone through several rites of passage - a tin boom in the mid19th century, a devastating fire, a big flood, the Japanese Occupation and 151 years of British rule. This city on the banks of the Kelang and Gombak rivers is the capital of Malaysia. It recently emerged as the fourth best shopping destination after New York, Tokyo and London. Not bad for a city whose name refers to the muddy confluence of the two rivers that run through it! Today, all this rich history serves as a highlight to one of the city’s newest tourist attraction - the Free Heritage Guided Tours of Dataran Merdeka. Offered three times a week, these guided tours organized by Kuala Lumpur City Hall take in the history and architecture of the city’s landmark, Dataran Merdeka, and the ten heritage buildings surrounding the historic patch of field. The walking tour is the perfect way to admire the classic beauty of these important buildings in their entire original splendor. Tourists and locals will be guided by professional English speaking tour guides with

stops at the following heritage buildings: The Sultan Abdul Samad Building Built between 1894 and 1897, it is the first example of Moghul architecture in Malaysia and features a 41-metre high clock tower, arched colonnades and copper domes. Old City Hall (built in 1896) The Old City Hall, built in 1896, stands out from the surrounding buildings with its black domes and interesting roofline of Islamic arches and dome-shaped pavilions. The Government Printing Office Architects A.C. Norman and J. Russell built this magnificent MoghulIndia inspired building in 1898 to meet the printing needs of the then British Malaya Administration. Railway Station (built in 1905) This building is distinguishable by its design of alternating red bricks and white plaster bands and an Islamic-style façade with raised onion-shaped domes derived from Moghul architecture. The building now houses the National Textile Museum. The Chartered Bank (built in 1919) This three-storey symmetrical building with a protruding porch and arches on the ground level expresses Moghul architecture eloquently. From the rule of ancient kingdoms to conquests from other empires, Malaysian history is as colourful as its landmarks, festivities and unique cultures. Melaka was one of the earliest Malay sultanates in the country, to be colonised by the Portuguese in 1511 and the Dutch in 1641. beauty, Malaysia quickly became a major tourist attraction around the world. Malaysia is ranked 9th in the world for tourist arrivals. The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 ranks Malaysia 25th out of 141 countries overall, which was the fifth best in Asia. In 1999, Malaysia launched a worldwide marketing campaign called “Malaysia, Truly Asia” which was largely successful

and brought in over 7.4 million tourists. The extra revenue generated by tourism helped the country’s economy during the economic crisis of 2008. The air transport market also grew strongly during this period, with Malaysia easily becoming Asia’s sixth-largest aviation market. Besides that, Malaysia emerged as one the fastestgrowing destinations for medical tourism in Asia and the local hospitality industry emerged as one of the largest in the Southeast Asian region. The Malaysian airline sector does not exist in isolation either, with Asia – and particularly Southeast Asia – already in the stage for heightened competition between Low Cost Carriers and flag carriers, which are moving to cut their prices. Nonetheless, the current market conditions have undoubtedly delivered a major boost to the air travel and tourism industries, as well as delivering more people than ever to the destinations of their choice. With so many choices of airlines and affordable ticket prices, the aviation industry is growing at a fast pace to accommodate the need of their customers. Enchanting Labuan By Emily Lowe

The mention of Labuan may draw puzzled looks among many travellers in terms of its geographical location. Labuan, named after “labuhan” or harbour, is the second Federal Territory of Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur. Located off the state of Sabah in East Malaysia, enchanting Labuan is known as “the Pearl of Borneo”. On the other hand, for those who have heard of Labuan, most did not see a reason to visit this offshore financial hub. Why would they, when they have no business that require the financial services offered? Well, now here are some 18 | M ALIND OM AG | M AY 2 018

good reasons for you to consider this island as your next preferred destinations.

Of Sun, Sea, Sand and Surf

The Federal Territory of Labuan is made up of Labuan Island and its’ surrounding six smaller islands. Therefore, this is really a paradise for those who cannot get enough of the beach and sea. Island hop to Pulau Rusukan Besar, Pulau Rusukan Kecil, Pulau Papan and Pulau Layang-Layangan, to get your dose of sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling or even diving. One of the best experiences to be

VOYAGE | EN CH ANTIN G LAB UAN

had at Pulau Papan is to sail into the sunset on a Parahu Larai (sail boat). For only RM15 per pax, the boat takes 8 - 10 passengers, 4 - 5 on each side. It is a therapeutic feeling to sail into the sunset far off in the horizon, with the wind blowing through your hair, leaving all worldly worries behind.

Famous Wreck Sites

Divers would be delighted to know that there are a few famous wreck sites off Labuan waters to appease their underwater adventurous spirit. The four identified vessels are SS De Klerk, USS Salute, MV Tung Hwuang and Mabini Padre. SS De Klerk, also known as Australian Wreck, was a Dutch merchant vessel that hit a mine and sank in 1944, killing 339 people. Meanwhile, USS Salute, or American Wreck, was a World War II US Navy minesweeper which also struck a mine. It sank in 1945, taking along with it the lives of nine American sailors. As for MV Tung Hwuang, or Cement Wreck, it was a freighter that transported cement to Brunei for the construction of the Sultan’s new palace in 1980. Finally, Mabini Padre, also known as Blue Water Wreck, was a Philippines fishing trawler which caught fire and sank in 1981. Wreck diving off Labuan waters vary in difficulty and requires different skill levels. MV Tung Hwuang is said to be one of the easiest to explore and most suitable for divers who are new to wreck diving.

Labuan is very much unexplored when it comes to tourism. There is still plenty to see and do. Surrender Point & Peace Park

Based on the above two wrecks from World War II, SS De Klerk and USS Salute, it is obvious that Labuan was a hot spot during that period. Occupied by the Japanese 37th Army for more than three years (1942 - 1945), the Allied forces headed by the Australian Army, launched an attack to repossess the island, starting with its airstrip. Within four days, most of the main island, including its main town Victoria, was secured by the Allied forces. This caused Japan to surrender, and it was done formally at a spot now known as Surrender Point, near Layang-Layangan Beach. Surrender Point is located within Peace Park, a park built by the government of Japan in 1982 as a memorial to peace and to preserve the memory of Japanese soldiers who fought and fell on this island, as well as civilians who perished as a result of the war. Centrepiece of the park is a large mound with two prominent curved walls ringed by tropical rocks and pavilions, not unlike a Japanese AU GUST 2 018 | M ALIND OM AG | 19

garden. This Labuan Peace Park is one of three Peace Parks in the world that is built by the Japanese government.

Labuan War Cemetery

Erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Labuan War Cemetery is the final resting place for 3,908 war heroes who were killed during the Japanese invasion of Borneo in the early 1940s. More than half of these graves are identified. They included Commonwealth soldiers from Malaya, Australia, New Zealand, Britain and India, Prisoners of War, as well as those who perished from the Sandakan Death Marches. Believed to be the largest war grave in Southeast Asia, among those who are buried here are Victoria Cross medal recipients, Sergeant Thomas Currie Derrick (1914–1945) and Corporal John Bernard Mackey (1922–1945). Every year, a delegation of Australia and New Zealand war veterans, descendants and friends, alongside local leaders, attend the annual Remembrance Day at Labuan World War II Memorial, located within the grounds of the cemetery.

Duty-Free Shopping Haven

Labuan’s duty-free status is a major attraction for tourists, as they enjoy exemptions of custom duty on a range of imported goods, including confectionery, textile, leather products, liquor, perfume, pearl, cigarettes and dive equipment. Is it any surprise that Labuan is a shopaholic’s haven? With the scheduled completion of the RM70 million BVO Premium Outlet, Malaysia’s first duty-free premium outlet in the first quarter of 2019, the Federal Territory will be elevated into a premier tourism destination.

Hidden Gem

Labuan is very much unexplored when it comes to tourism. There is still plenty to see and do, even if water activities, history and shopping are not interesting enough for some. Did you know that one of Labuan’s best kept secrets is its glorious sunset? It has to be seen to believe!

Getting To Know By Zeenee Coogan Myanmar is nicknamed Land of Golden Pagodas, so it is no surprise that this lively country is home to the celebrated Shwedagon Pagoda. Apart from visiting the holiest Buddhist pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar, there are a lot of other attractions the city has to offer. While tourism has been encouraged since 1992, it is only over the last few years that there has been an influx of visitors to the country. Yangon (also known as Rangoon) is the biggest city in Myanmar, home to over 6 million people and it is a commercial and political hub. As the city develops, the Yangon skyline is continuously changing with skyscrapers and condominiums. Despite this move towards modernisation, the city’s infrastructure is trying to keep up. While Yangon is no longer the capital of Myanmar (that honour has been given to Nay Pyi Taw), it remains the country’s largest city, as well as its intellectual heart. And with Yangon’s golden pagodas, colonialera buildings, pulsating markets, and a delightful downtown area, it is no surprise the city is experiencing a rush of tourism. Most travellers visit the Shwedagon Pagoda, Chaukhtatgyi Buddha, Taukkyan War Cemetery, and Botahtaung Pagoda. These are all great destinations, but there are numerous other sites and activities in Yangon that are worth checking out, too; these alternatives are often less crowded and less touristy than the destinations on the main tourist trail.

Sule Pagoda

The Shwedagon Pagoda is breathtaking and unquestionably

24 | M ALIND OM AG | AU GUST 2 018

worth a visit when you are in Yangon, but do not miss the Sule Pagoda. This stupa is known in part for its unique location: it sits in heart of downtown, right in the centre of a large roundabout filled with heavy traffic, making the walk to the site a bit nerve-wracking. Once you are in, however, you can relax and enjoy its beauty. Around 2,500 years old, the golden, octagonal pagoda is surrounded by several smaller stupas, 10 bronze bells, and eight Buddha images; it also houses a hair relic of the Gautama Buddha. The Sule Pagoda was used as the centre of town planning during the

British colonial era and as a meeting point for Burmese royalty. Up the road is Yangon’s very own Chinatown. Located downtown, most of the affordable accommodations can be found here. The local life and street markets come alive every day. Feel free to observe the locals selling clothes, longyi, local fruits and produce along the side of the roads. It is quite an organised chaos. Within this area, there are 3 places of worship to visit (a mosque, Hindu temple and Buddhist temple).

in Yangon away from the chaotic commercial centre? Hop on the Circle Line Train, a slow train that circles Yangon, covering 45.9 kilometres of track and passing through 39 stations. This three-hour ride delivers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and opportunities to mingle with locals (and possibly nonhuman passengers like chickens). The Circle Line Train runs daily from Yangon Central Railway Station and departs every 45 minutes to an hour.

Reasonable, Delicious, Authentic Meals

Mandalay Restaurant at Belmond Governor’s Residence is one of the most popular restaurants for tourists in Yangon. This fine dining establishment is located at the pool area of the hotel and serves both Burmese and European cuisine. While you can certainly get a fantastic meal at Mandalay Restaurant, why not eat where the locals do? Aung Thuka, located at 17 (A), West Shwe Gon Daing Road, near the Shwedagon Pagoda, is a local favourite. They serve a wide range of Burmese dishes, from curries made with various meats to fish to fresh salads. Although not much English is spoken here, the staff is friendly and will help you select good dishes. On the surrounding banks of Karaweik Lake are boundless food and beverage options, mainly catering to the local or various South East Asian region cuisine. If you fancy a cafe out of the ordinary, YGN Bus Cafe is a converted bus cafe serving up some delicious frappes. Floating on the east shore of the lake is the centrepiece, Karaweik Palace, which is now a rehabilitated restaurant enjoying cultural entertainment while dining. Tip: Do not miss out on the local delicacies – chicken feet salad, fish soup rice noodle (Mohinga), Burmese rice, Burmese paratha, Nutrient, Shan Tohu noodle (Tohu Nway), Fried Tohu

Shop at Bogyoke Aung San Market

Instead of hitting one of the modern malls popping up around Yangon, try the Bogyoke Aung San Market. Housing over 2,000 shops selling clothes, handicrafts, and jewellery (including rare gemstones and jade), it can get hot and crowded in this 100-year-old market. While there are other local markets scattered across the city, this is by far the largest. Apart from selling fabrics and souvenirs, there are local food shacks located between the alleys serving up local cuisine and fresh fruits while you dine on little plastic stools and tables. It is common to see Burmese women sporting a pale-yellow paste on their cheeks. This paste is known as thanaka made from ground bark and is used for cosmetic purposes and as a sunscreen. There are several stores selling this product. Alternatively, if you ask, they may let you try it. Tip: If you are planning on taking the taxi, consider the traffic – especially if you are going from Downtown Yangon to the Bus Station or Airport.

Phuket’s Suay Restaurant

By Sudipto De

Modern Thai food is all the rage now as chefs trained in the Europe are combining contemporary cooking styles with Thai flavours. One of these is Chef Noi Tammasang Choothong. After finishing his training at the Uberkingen Culinary School is Germany, he honed his skills all over the world before returning to Thailand to open his own restaurant, Suay in the holiday island of Phuket, Thailand. Set in a relaxed yet elegant vibe, the restaurant lives up to its motto of being sassy, unique, authentic and yummy. The menu features a number of sprightly, refreshing cocktails that will have you all refreshed and ready for your meal. The tom yum rum coke features the fiery flavours so commonly found in the tom yum in the rum and coke sweet combo that is a cult classic all over the world. The Suay Sunset on the other hand features Tequila with Aperol mixed with Rice Berries. There is a free flow of tropical fruits in the cocktails as the Lychee Kiss, Passion Fruit Martini and Pink Pomelo Mojito ensures that the sweet, tangy flavours are never in shortage. As for the food, Suay features an eclectic mix of traditional Thai and European flavours.

The Thai salads includes a grilled rib eye steak marinated with coriander seeds and Thai green papaya. Chef Noi’s international cooking style comes to the fore with the Thai styled salmon ceviche served out with assorted crispy mushrooms and chilli lime dressing. His techniques are also displayed in the specialities. The grilled sous vide duck breast served with stir fried green asparagus in hot basil sauce combines the best of two worlds. One dish that exemplifies the best of his European cooking is the charcoal grilled beef tenderloin served pan seared with a foie gras (duck liver) truffle sauce, spring vegetables and parmesan french fries. But he also displays his proficiency in Thai food with a braised beef cheek in massaman curry, coconut gnocchi, edamame bean salsa & cashew nuts. There is also a pad thai made with a soft shelled crab that you must plan to try out. The menu also features a range of tacos and pastas. The eccentric ones of them are the cajun prawn and even a tandoori chicken taco that his Indian guests will truly enjoy. SUAY at Phuket Town some of the best modern Thai food you can find while visiting Thailand.

Hong Kong is quite popular for hiking but surprisingly not many avid hikers have this bustling city of angels on their bucket list. Renowned for awesome food and city madness, Hong Kong’s 42 hiking trails are often overlooked by tourists as they flock to Lantau Island in a cable car, have some fun at Disneyland or check out animals at Oceanpark. With so many things to see and do in Hong Kong, it is easy to miss the epic treks and tracks as you juggle from one popular attraction to another. The popular hikes in Hong Kong include, but are not limited to – The Dragon’s Back, Victoria’s Peak, Po Toi, Violet Hill, Lions Rock, Lantau Peak trail and more. However, try some offbeat hikes to steer away from the crowds. Even though the tourists are not often seen hitting the trails, locals are getting their daily dose of adrenaline, exercise and adventure there. So, if you do not want to be overwhelmed by sheer numbers – skip the popular trails. Two hikes you can try for uncrowded paths and spectacular 360 degree city views are – Suicide Cliff at Kowloon Peak and the 2100 stairs to Mount High West. Suicide Cliff has many paths heading to the top and you can choose to take a safe semi-paved route or an off-the-grid non-visible path in the bushes. If you choose to be adventurous and take the route less travelled, be wary of snakes and falls. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear, carry two litres of water and trek carefully to the top.
