CEO’s Note

H

oliday and Celebration… the two magic words that work wonders at year end. The yearly affair of taking a break and unwinding is what most people eagerly yearn for. Going to a pristine beach paradise or rejuvenating at a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city can be a good getaway to disconnect for a while. Most of us, (guilty as charged myself) may not realise how dependent we are on our gadgets mobile phones, computers and other electronic devices. It is sometimes good to get away from all connection for a while, more so to ensure a healthy and balanced lifestyle. With that in mind, we have

Chandran Rama Muthy Chief Executive Officer Malindo Air

recommended a few getaway options for a total “digital detox” in our cover story. This 2018 has been great for us with a series of new regional destinations, introduction of new routes and enhancement of our services. For a good end to a fruitful year, we have added a new route in East Malaysia to our network. Beginning 6 December we will be flying to Tawau in Sabah from Kota Kinabalu. As our regional network expansion plan is being realised gradually, we have yet an exciting line-up in 2019. So do keep a look out for our milestones in the upcoming year. A new destination that we introduced late October, Wuhan, of China is featured in our Voyage segment of the magazine. You will be discovering an exquisite part of Asia with its authentic culture. The other voyage segment features

a famous diving spot in Sarawak called Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park. The beautiful corals and other marine life makes its reef amongst the best in the region. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank my amazing team for striving alongside, and getting through a rather challenging but rewarding journey this year. In addition, my heartfelt gratitude also goes out to the concern government and non-governmental bodies, tourism boards, airport authorities, and last but not the least, our passengers’ loyal patronage, who have driven Malindo Air to its accomplishments thus this far. Before I sign off for 2018, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a joyful New Year celebration! Until next year, have a wonderful flying experience and enjoy your welldeserved vacation.

Go Camping - Malaysia

Probably the most underrated way to unplug is to just pack it up and head somewhere to get away from your daily life. There are spots in just about every country or region where you can get away from it all. Most publicly-owned national forests and nature preserves, are the best place that offers camping of all kinds, from somewhat developed campsites to back country trekking. Most forests or jungles are hard to get phone reception and that means total cut off from digital technologies. This is good for tech-addicts as it leaves you with no choice but to enjoy the beautiful mother-nature. Rainforest Camping, Perhentian Island This campsite is located in the rainforest at Perhentian Kecil near Terengganu, right next to a sandy beach and clear turquoise sea. Enjoy swimming, relaxing in hammocks, snorkelling, jungle trekking and walking along Coral Bay and Long Beach, then relax at the bar with a refreshing drink while chatting with other travellers. Top it off with an amazing sunset view. Endau-Rompin National Park Endau-Rompin National Park is an old rainforest, and comes from the Endau and Rompin Rivers that run through it. There are breathtaking waterfalls and challenging jungle trails. Visit the Orang Asli village, travel down the rivers on rubber tubes, or go on a night safari. You can pitch your tents at Kuala Jasin, Batu Hampar, Upeh Guling, and Kuala Marong. Entry to the park costs RM10 (USD2.50), and camping RM20 per person (around USD5). A guide can help you prepare your camping equipment.

Wonderful Wuhan By Emily Lowe

Picturesque, serene, historic.... these are but three adjectives used to describe Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in Central China. Wuhan is the amalgamation of three smaller cities of Hanyang, Hankou, and Wuchang on 1st January, 1927. In the same year, Wuhan became the capital of China, albeit for only six short months. Due to its strategic location and geography at the confluence of Han River and along the middle reaches of Yangtze River, Wuhan is a major domestic transportation hub that connects to all parts of China; north, south, east and west. Wuhan is, after all, also the most populous city in Central China. In modern-day China, Wuhan is an important financial centre and industrial zone. While Wuhan is often overlooked as a tourist attraction, it is fast becoming a destination to be reckoned with.

Wuhan icon

One of the most famous icons of Wuhan is the Yellow Crane Tower, a Chinese pagodalike tower situated atop Wuchang District’s Serpent Hill. Said to have been built since AD 223, it was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times over the years, and was even burnt down once. The current structure is a result of a complete reconstruction exercise in 1981, featuring modern materials with an elevator added in, although its external traditional design has been thoughtfully preserved. One of the Four Great Towers of China, tourists should make a visit to Yellow Crane Tower to validate their trip to the city. The top of the tower offers a panoramic view of the Yellow Crane Tower Park and beyond, where Yangtze River can be seen in the horizon.

Scenic Wuhan

If you had been impressed with the beauty of Hangzhou’s West Lake, you need to check out East Lake Scenic Area in central Wuhan. Five times bigger than the former, East Lake Scenic Area is easily China’s largest urban lake. Divided into six areas, each with its own unique features, are: Tingtao, Moshan, Luoyan, Baima, Luohong, and Chuidi. No matter what the season is, you will be welcomed by lovely blossoms of the season, from orchids in spring to plum flowers in winter. Create even more memories when you take a boat ride to Moshan Zoo, on the bank across the lake.

“Hubu Lane is where you should explore, to try the best of the city’s street snacks, especially for breakfast. Located in Ziyou Road, Hubu Lane is possibly the most famous street in Wuhan”

Visiting Mulan

If you are a fan of Disney’s animation, Mulan, which is to be released in 2020 as a live-action feature film, Mulan Mountain is where you should explore. This wellknown geopark is named after Hua Mulan, a legendary female warrior from ancient China. Whether truth or fiction, it is said that she took over her aged father’s place in the army and went to war for twelve long years, attaining the rank of General, achieving much glory in the process. An hour’s car ride from Wuhan city, Mulan Mountain boasts a history of 1,500 years and is home to seven palaces, eight Taoist temples, as well as uncountable statues of Buddha, making it a religious landmark for both Taoists and Buddhists. Nature lovers would thoroughly enjoy the mountain but do be prepared for lots of walking, along paved path and climbing of stairs.

Malindo Air flies to WUHAN 3x weekly.

Best time to visit

Suggested time to visit is between March and April, when the climate is most agreeable. During this time of the year, to be included in your itinerary is a trip to Wuhan University on Luojia Hill, surrounded by Donghu Lake. Said to be one of the most beautiful campuses in the whole of China, a most glorious sight of cherry blossoms awaits. You should also schedule a cruise along Yangtze River, to get the most out of your visit to Wuhan.

Official Snack Street of Wuhan

Hubu Lane is where you should explore if you wish to try the best of the city’s street snacks, especially for breakfast. Located in Ziyou Road, Hubu Lane is possibly the most famous street in Wuhan, with a long history that dates back 400 years ago. Originally a narrow lane, it has been expanded to a length of 150 metres and width of 3 metres, carrying the distinction of being Wuhan’s official snack street. Besides food stalls selling 170 types of snacks, other businesses that make up the 160 stores include shopping booths and entertainment venues. Recommended food items are hot dry noodles, fried tofu skin and steamed dumplings. Be ready to jostle your way among the crowd, as Hubu Lane receives an average of 10,000 visitors a day, and some 25,000 on weekends.

The Leura Golf Club in Australia

Morning sun shining over the duck pond Photos Credit : Destination NSW

By Sudipto De Playing golf against the majestic backdrops is a dream come true. Located against the scenic beauty of the UNESCO Heritage Blue Mountains in New South Wales, the Fairmont Resort is the perfect place to relax, play golf and munch on some scrumptious Australian Food. The Leura Golf Club established in 1902 is one of the oldest Golf courses in the Blue Mountains. Although the course opens with a tight opening hole, it opens up to fairways lined with mature pines and eucalyptus before giving way to European deciduous trees that accord quite a view in the autumns. Back to Back par fives at 3 & 4 offer challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. But it is the back nine that offer the best workout with its narrow chutes, acute shot angles, some forbidding rough and rolling slopes. The 18-hole 72 par course

not only offers something for every golfer, both amateur and experienced but the accompanying resort offers a plethora of activities for you to experience. This 223 roomed resort is built in such a way that it is a far cry from the bustling metropolis of city. As you drive away from the city, you can realise the noises dissipating away. The peace and calm that welcome you at the Fairmont Blue Mountains is only matched by the beauty that surrounds it. You can either decide to take a plunge into the pool or head off to the library for a quite evening. The culinary delights at the resort are quite a few. Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park

The Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park spans across an area measuring 186,930ha, its diversity and accessibility to corals and other marine life making its reefs amongst the best in the region, with everything from underwater wrecks, abandoned oil rigs and corals teeming with life. Lying at depths ranging from seven to 30 metres, diving visibility averages at around 10 to 30 metres, with water temperatures normally at 26 to 27ยบC, occasionally dropping to 23ยบC at certain depths or during monsoon season with cold tides coming from the northern Pacific, or riding to 29 to 30ยบC during the month of May. The best time to dive in Miri is from late March through November. You can arrive in Miri and be among the reefs in two hours flat, with the closest dive sites a mere 15 minutes from the Marina Bay jetty. If you are an amateur diver in need of some training, the local dive operators offer a certification programme as well. A short tutorial in one of their pools, and you could be diving with the best of them off the coast of Miri. There are 9 distinct and popular dive destinations singled out as attractions for the public to explore within the Miri-Sibuti National Park.

“Crowded with pelagic sea fans, large gorgonian fans spanning 4 metres, red, orange and white whip corals, with winding ‘walkways’ along which angel fish, butterfly fish, sea perch and lizardfish swim.” Malindo Air flies to KUCHING 21x weekly.

The first dive site is just 15 minutes from the from the Marina Bay jetty. Eve’s Garden is a shallow reef at a depth of two to seven metres, carpeted with soft corals such as leather corals, anemones, elephant’s ear sponges and sea whips, with an abundance of colourful clown fish, yellow tail fusiliers and angel fish. The Anemone Garden is 30 minutes from the jetty and ranges from zero to 10 metres. The garden is populated by bubble, staghorn and colourful Dendronepthya soft corals. Other surprises are feather stars, giant clams and nudibranchs, with schooling yellow tails also found in large numbers. The Belais Reef is also 30 minutes from the jetty and is like an open underwater zoo of 19,000 square meters, crowded with pelagic sea fans, large gorgonian fans spanning 4 metres, red, orange and white whip corals, with winding ‘walkways’ along which angel fish, butterfly fish, sea perch and lizardfish swim. Reef top is at about 15 metres and the site is absolutely a photographer’s heaven. The Tukau Drop-Off is located 50 minutes from the jetty, and is far deeper than the three shallow reefs. This dive challenges your sense, with the reef starting at 20

metres and dropping quickly to 40 metres like a vertical wall. Swimming the waters here are schooling jacks, barracudas, Napoleon Wrasse, yellowtail fusiliers and large groupers. Forty five minutes from the jetty is Santak Point, at 21 metres depth with blue water, glass fishes and sea fans 2-3 metres in size. The visibility here averages at 30 metres or more, with the reef edge dropping to 35 metres in places. The Siwa Reef is 35 minutes away from the Marina Bay jetty with the most interesting section of the reef being the slower slope, where leopard sharks and huge marble rays can be spotted. This site is full of surprises in small packages; orange clownfish in purple anemones to several species of nudibranch. Barracuda Point, 45 minutes from the jetty, is a reef within a reef, located on the Salam reef where a school of some 300 large barracudas predictably swirl in a never ending circle. Depths go to 25 metres where you can find sea horses, symbiotic shrimps and flatworms. Sri Gadong Wreck is an hour and 10 minutes from the jetty, is a favourite among local divers. This wreckage is a cargo ship, about 30 metres in length, which is believed to have carried sawn timber until it sank off the coast of Miri. There is very little information known on the vessel type, or the date and reason it sank. Resting on the an 18-mettre mud-bottom, the wreck is now teeming with jacks, yellow grunts, batfish and barracudas all around, while white giant groupers swimming in and out of the

cargo hold. Another local favourite is the Kenyalang Artificial Reef, previously a decommissioned oil rig, is the first artificial reef in Malaysia and the second in the region. Recent measures in conservation have been taken in the Miri-Sibuti waters in the form of the deployment of 600 reef balls, a follow-up effort from the 550 concrete balls sunk in the Sibuti-Bungai waters two years ago, to restore degraded coral reefs, encourage coral growth and increase the population of the local marine life. Over time, the corals will begin to overgrow the reef balls, which will lead to even more diving wonders in the future of the Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park.

A Journey Through Sri Lanka at Ceylon Tea Trails

The timeless ruins, endless beaches, famous tea and flavourful food make Sri Lanka irresistible to all travellers. After being off the radar for a quarter century due to the civil war, Sri Lanka is now on the must visit lists and now with Malindo Holidays, you can even have your choice from an array of luxury hotels to indulge in this Christmas. The special hotel that we would like to introduce to you this month is the Ceylon Tea Trails Resort. The Ceylon Tea Trails Resort is the world’s first tea bungalow resort that is perched at an altitude of 1250 metres in Sri Lanka’s panoramic Ceylon tea region, bordering the World Heritage Central Highlands. This is the ideal setting for trekking and biking against the breathtaking backdrop of mountains, lakes, winding roads and waterfalls. Stay in one of five authentic tea planters’ bungalows, each one of which has its own charm. Lakeside Castlereagh, Summerville, Dunkeld and Norwood with panoramic views, and Tientsin, the most traditionally colonial of the five; they are all decorated with colonial furniture. Each of the bungalows offers 4 to 6 unique rooms and a dedicated butler, chef, and house staff. It is also the first Relais & Châteaux property in Sri Lanka. The menu of delicious Sri Lankan dishes 28 | M ALIND OM AG | DECEM B ER 2 018

will impress even the most discerning diners. Drawing inspiration from the bounty of the surrounding countryside, Tea Trails’ culinary team has created a thoughtful menu which makes use of the variety of exotic fruits, vegetables and spices available in the locale. Guests will be treated to traditional morning ‘Bed Tea’, whilst the delicious afternoon tea is both curiously English and exotic at the same time. In the evening, guests can opt to eat in the dining room, library or even in the open air, with all meals arranged around guests’ wishes in a truly residential style. Those keen to explore the estate can spread their meals across the different bungalows, perhaps breakfast at Dunkeld before walking to Castlereagh for lunch or enjoying afternoon tea at Summerville. The Resplendent Ceylon, Sri Lanka has two other properties besides Ceylon Tea Trails. Check out Wild Coast Tented Lodge and Cape Weligama that offers a totally different kind of experience to guests. Ruvinda Bernard An Adventurous Sri Lankan Guide Passion, adventure and wanderlust were the calling for Ruvinda Bernard to give up his office job in IT in 2008 to join the travel and tourism industry in Sri Lanka. He joined Sri Lanka In Style, one of the leading luxury travel companies on the island, which taught him a lot about attention to detail and the level of organisation that high-end travellers expect. After gaining a wealth of experience, Ruvinda began Enchanting Ceylon, his own business, three years ago. The company specialises in creating unique adventures based on travellers’ wishlists. “To do this job well, you first have to be a traveller in order to understand another traveller. Then one needs to be passionate about working with people and meeting their requirements by giving a high quality of service when it comes to transportation, hotel accommodation and experiences. Organisation is also key

in managing a successful travel company – you must always have back-up plans in order to make any trip a success. Lastly, you have to be knowledgeable about Sri Lanka’s sites, culture and history. I realized I enjoyed all of the above and love showing visitors a different edge to my country,” says Ruvinda. Sri Lanka was recently nominated by Lonely Planet as the best destination in the world to visit in 2019 because of its impressive diversity. To share his love of the island and connect with people from varying walks of life, and different parts of the globe, Ruvinda markets his agency on Facebook and Instagram. He finds social media an effective way of showing what Sri Lanka has to offer, such as the beautifully scenic places and unbeatable hospitality.
