Moving on to the mid of first quarter, we have exciting developments lined up. According to the lunar calendar, the year of Rooster has officially kicked in and I am pleased to note that we have just moved in to Malindo’s brand new corporate office. This move is concurrent with our network expansion plan, whereby the bigger space is essential to accommodate our growing team and services. Towards the end of this month, we will be flying to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia as part of our planned new destination. Jeddah, a port city on the Red Sea, is a modern commercial hub and main gateway for pilgrimages to the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina. As this February is commercially dedicated to love with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we have highlighted selected ideal destinations for you to head with your loved ones. While the occasion may be significant to some, it also may be equally overrated for several others. However, it is no harm to take opportunity of this Hallmark holiday especially in terms of the promotional offerings that will be available worldwide, and Malindo Air is certainly not an exception! If love is the talk of the month, then you could also take advantage of our latest offerings for senior citizens whereby we will now be offering 20% discount on their flight tickets. Perfect time to show appreciation to parents, grandparents or even a reward for yourself if you fall under this category; a well-deserved journey in the golden years. More details on this are available in our Insider segment which also features our new city

ticketing office in KL Sentral which emphasizes on convenient check-in facilities as well. On that note, we have more interesting destinations and product offerings coming your way. So be on the look-out at our official website and social media sites for our latest news and happenings. For the many wander luster out there who are planning their visits this year, we have interesting reads in our Voyage segments on Kathmandu, Nepal and Penang, Malaysia. Kathmandu is a country with rich history, majestic palaces and divine temples and it is also within touching distance to Nepal’s premier attraction, the Himalaya. The beautiful scenic city has a lot to offer tourist wherein we covered the top five things not tobe-missed in Kathmandu. Meanwhile, on our other segment of Voyage, we explored the ever famous Penang’s street food, which never fails to bore even its’ locals. Having been recently voted as being the 17 best places to visit in 2017 and as Asia’s best street food destination by CNN, Penang has been garnering quite a hype in the international travel scene. Herein, we covered top 10 best street food in the Pearl of the Orient. While we are on the topic that piques interest of many, do also check out our relatively new segment, Adventure, which resonates an adrenaline-pumping experience of a lifetime. Till next month, Happy Valentine’s Day and have a L-O-V-E-ly journey with us! Chandran Rama Muthy CEO, Malindo Air

Malindo Air Launches City Ticketing Office & Check-In Services At KL Sentral

Malindo Air has launched another new city ticketing office and check-in service at KL Sentral to facilitate and provide convenience to customers who will now be able to check-in at Malindo Air’s counter at the KLIA Ekspres Departure Hall. Check-in can be done at least three hours before passangers’ flight and luggage can be checked through to their final destination from KL Sentral. The cut-off time of three hours before departure would be necessary to facilitate checkin baggage transfer to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Travellers would just need to purchase a valid KLIA Ekspres train ticket to use this dedicated service. The city check-in service is another milestone to build a stronghold in Kuala Lumpur. The service will strategically enhance the travel experience and improve the airline’s product offering to 4 | MALINDOMAG

their ever growing customers. The KL Sentral Ticketing Office is the third city ticketing office after the offices in Medan Tuanku and NU Sentral. The KL Sentral Ticketing Office is able to provide purchasing convenience with 16 ticket counters with a capacity to serve 20,000 customers a month. Tan Sri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, Executive Chairman of Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd said that Kuala Lumpur is one of the few cities in the world that provide in-town check-in services, where passengers can check-in luggage within the city before they head to the airport. He also mentioned that after 14 years of operations, they are proud to put on record that the city checkin facility has a 100% delivery record for checked in luggage. As added security, ERL introduced x-ray luggage screening in August last year, on top of the regular

luggage screening which is already being conducted in KLIA. Malindo Air’s KL Sentral check-in counter is open daily from 5.00am until 9.00pm, and for flight checkin at KL Sentral, one would need to proceed to the KLIA Ekspres Departure Hall, located within the KL City Air Terminal. Malindo Air’s Ticketing Office opens seven days a week from 9am to 8pm on Monday to Friday and 9.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday and Sunday. Bookings can also be made hassle-free online at www. malindoair.com or at www.mobile. malindoair.com via smartphones. Alternatively, customers can also book via travel agents or Call Centre between 9am to 9pm daily at 03-7841 5388. HAPPENINGS

Thaipusam is an auspicious annual celebration in honour of the Hindu god, Lord Murugan, with the grandest festivity mainly taking place in Batu Caves – a limestone hill with a series of caverns and temples about 13km north of Kuala Lumpur. Besides Batu Caves, Hindus also gather at the Balathan-dayuthapani Temple or Waterfall Hill Temple in Penang, the Sri Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Sungai Petani, Kedah, and the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple in Ipoh, Perak. The festivity takes place over three days. They start out in the wee hours of the morning with a procession from Sri Mahamariamman Temple - Kuala Lumpur’s oldest Hindu temple, carrying a golden chariot with a statue of Lord Murugan. The procession will be accompanied by several thousand worshipers and will arrive at Batu Caves by noon. This is when the revelry really gets started. Traditionally, this event is significant for those who want to pay penance, express gratitude to the divine Lord or have a wishful event to be fulfilled. Semi-circular steel or wooden frame called ‘kavadi’ is made to be hoisted by a devotee for the 6 | MALINDOMAG

length of the procession. It has bars for support on the shoulders and is decorated with flowers and peacock feathers, and some have spikes that pierce into the body. It can top out at 40 kgs and reach a height of four

metres. However, in present times devotees have innovated the kavadi into phenomenal designs, that it has become one of the main cultural attraction to locals and tourists alike. On the day of Thaipusam, some devotees shave their hair off as a symbol of sincere devotion, whereas some does piercing on their body

and proceed towards the temple of their preferred deity. All through the way they engage in different forms of devotion, some through chants of prayers, devotional songs or some other in a state of trance. While carrying a pot of milk is the simplest form of kavadi, the extremes include piercing the tongue, cheeks or skin with vel (divine spear) skewers. The act of piercing is significant as a constant reminder about Lord Murugan and gives the bearer immense power of endurance. On reaching the top of the pilgrimage area the bearers lay down their kavadi. Honey or milk is then poured on the idol of the deity in the form of thanksgiving. Commonly offerings of coconut, fruits and flowers are done to the Lord. For devotees who have skewers and hooks on their body parts, the metal implements are immediately removed at this point and their wounds are treated with hot ash. Much to the surprise, under normal circumstances, there will be no sign of pain, blood or even any scarring at all. This reinforces the belief of many devotees.

arnies, a pumping little Aussie café in the Central Business District (CBD) of Singapore, is celebrating six years of serving up comfort food and specialty coffee with a brand new spanking dinner menu packed with rustic flavours. The café is all about taking the usual comfort café grub to a whole new level. Started in 2010 by Aussie Ben Lee, Sarnies is a beautiful little café located at Telok Ayer, right in the heart of the bustling Singapore, serving up amazing Aussie food and specialty coffee roasted in-house. The outlet is known for using grass fed beef, chicken free from hormones and antibiotics and bacon which is cured in-house – to guarantee a healthy, wholesome meal every time. Sarnies has always placed an emphasis on 32 | MALINDOMAG

providing wholesome meals made from scratch using only fresh, quality ingredients, and the new dinner menu this time around will be no different. New menu items will include slider trios, with a choice of grilled haloumi, cherry tomatoes & onion jam (S$13) - every component made from scratch, and each bun lovingly kneaded and baked fresh in-house daily. For those with more adventurous taste buds, go for bigger plates like the southern Indian style hand-cut pappardelle with prawns, coconut milk & curry leaves (S$19.50). The pasta is made by hand, cooked al dente to order and coated in a light creamy curry sauce. Also try the Texas style burger with overnight smoked brisket, homemade barbeque sauce and coleslaw (S$26.5) stacking so high with smokey, tender brisket, it is al-

most impossible to take one full bite of the burger in a mouthful. Of course, no menu at Sarnies would be complete without super food options like the light and refreshing quinoa salad with grilled turmeric chicken breast, avocado, feta, mango, chilli & cherry tomatoes (S$16.5), and the 24 Hour sous vide Moroccan lamb shank with pearl barley risotto, dukkha and mint (S$29.5). Sarnies is constantly exploring new ways to ensure a nutritious meal and a good time with every visit – and this menu, crafted by Chef Zak (formerly from Open Farm Community) and his culinary team meets that same mark. The brand new dinner menu is now available at Sarnies, Monday to Friday, from 6pm onwards. For more information on the café, please visit their website at www. sarniescafe.com.

PASSION

Model Car Racer

By Sharmila Vella

C

ynthia Lai is a Creative Director who has her own design firm specialising in design work for retail and corporate industries. Having the gift in being artistic and creative has led Cynthia to her passion in Model Car Racing. It all started as a child when she was drawn to cars, bikes, trucks, planes, boats and trains. She loves watching races, drawing them, building them in whatever form before getting involved in Radio Control Car Racing spectrum. Her interest has developed to racing 1/8th scale off-road nitro buggies on a competitive level. The competition is known for its legendary toughness and tremendous speeds. It runs on dirt tracks carved with rhythmic jumps, off camber corners and berms. The model cars are equipped with ‘nitro’ engines, which use real fuel, makes lots of noise and puts out real exhaust smoke! These cars run on real rubber street tires and is a four wheel drive for stability. They also have real working shock absorbers like the race cars. These are some of the exciting features of these model cars that makes it very popular. “When I started, I struggled a lot and hardly finished my races until I met Christian Jones who spent months teaching me how to build a race car right and tune the engines. We went for many races around Asia to

understand how to set up the car on different type of track conditions. From then on I finished almost every race and even qualified top in the open category in an international race in Thailand,” said Cynthia. “For me the joy is from assembling many parts to make a single working piece. When I got to understand the set ups to gain another second for a faster lap time, it was like an achievement and thrilling at the same time,” added the racer. In Malaysia, the toughest and highest level of competition is the National Series. It is held at one of the best 1/8th scale off-road racing facilities in Asia, 3 Stone Park, Glenmarie. Racers nationwide attend 5 rounds of which 3 rounds of points is taken to crown the national champion. The top drivers will then compete in the Asian games known as Femca and ultimately every racers dream would be to compete in the Worlds Competition which will be held in Perth, Australia in 2018. She hopes to continue to build cars and race in as many competitions as possible around Asia and qualify for the Worlds competition. But her ultimate desire is to build an Extreme Sports Hub Academy. It will be a place where people of all ages can take a vacation and go back having learnt how to build a car and race it or learn the fundamentals of riding a dirt bike.

Ponderosa Golf & Country Club Sources: Yvonne Loh

Ponderosa Golf & Country Club is an urban golf & leisure destination that is just a short drive from Johor Bahru’s city center, yet snugly tucked away as a getaway not only for golfers but also vacationers. It is easily accessible from the main Tebrau Highway or via the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL), connected to both the North South Highway and to the Second-Link to Singapore. Iskandar Puteri (formerly Nusa jaya), the centre of Iskandar is approximately half an hour drive. Here, Johor’s international theme parks like Legoland, Hello Kitty Town, The Little Big Club and for ardent brand seekers, the Johor Premium Outlet are all within reach. The 18-hole, par 72 golf course was designed by Max Wexler, later re-designed by Ronald Fream as a natural course surrounded by lush, tropical green-scape. It offers both physical challenge as well as visual treats of panoramic sweeping hills with Johor Bahru’s city skyline gracing the horizon. The golf course measures 6,467 and 6,005 metres from the black and blue tees, respectively. Though considered short by some golfers but with the sand and water hazards that Fream had so cleverly integrated into the varied contours and undulations of the greens, golfers will need more than just skills. Strategic thinking will be the order of the day and smart manoeuvres will ensure a challenging yet interesting playground.

Signature Holes There are many signature holes that will heighten the experience. The 7th Hole marks the toughest of all the par-3s; the 9th Hole that measures 543 metres is the longest and most difficult hole on the golf course, while the 16th hole has been tagged as the most interesting par-4 hole with a dog-leg left masterpiece just next to a huge pond.

Golfing Hours Par Différence Ponderosa Golf & Country Club is currently the only golf resort that offers 18-hole night golfing for those who prefer to catch a game after 5pm, and also the only one that offers 24-hour golf on Friday nights from 7pm to 7am the next morning. Breaking further convention, Ponderosa provides the earliest tee-off from 5am during weekends for avid golfers wanting to catch the sunrise over the city, and to finish early in time for breakfast.

Ponderosa is also ideal for leisure seekers and families with an Olympic-size swimming pool, children wading pool, Pet Farm, Herb Nursery, tennis courts, gymnasium and a Javanese Spa. A sprawling Colonialstyle clubhouse with 3 dining outlets, as well a 16-room lodge with a variation of rooms and suites that readily caters to those wishing to derive more out of their visit to Johor Bahru. Browsing and shopping at the Aeon Jusco Tebrau City, Tesco or Giant is only within a 5 to 10 minute driving radius. MALINDOMAG | 39
